Efficacy of the entomopathogenic fungi Metarhizium anisopliae in the control of infestation by stable flies Stomoxys calcitrans (L.), under natural infestation conditions

The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of an isolate of Metarhizium anisopliae applied by aspersion to control of Stomoxys calcitrans flies in dairy cattle naturally infested. Was applied by aspersion an aqueous formulation of M. anisopliae sensu lato (Ma134), at a concentration of 1×10(8)conidia/ml, four times with seven day intervals, on a group of eight Holstein cows; a control group of eight Holstein cows, received a water solution with Tween 80 (0.1%). The average number of flies per animal was estimated one day before each application, and then daily counts were done in both groups. The effectiveness of the formulation was calculated using the Abbott's formula. At the same time, defensive behaviors of stamp/kicks and tail movements were evaluated daily, estimating relative frequency per hour. The Ma134 formulation had an infestation control efficacy of 73%, taking into consideration the four study weeks. The population reduction effect was observed since the first week post-application (p<0.05), and the effect increased with the subsequent applications. Defensive behaviors were reduced beginning from the first application, reaching a reduction of 66% and 70%, respectively, during the four weeks of study. These results demonstrated the effectiveness of the formulation to control infestation by S. calcitrans, as well as reduce defensive behaviors which involves the infestation.

Thermoluminescence of Tequila-based nanodiamond

Nanodiamond thin films were deposited onto Si (100) substrates using Tequila as precursor by pulsed-liquid injection chemical vapour deposition at 850 degrees C. Some samples were exposed to beta particle irradiation in the dose range from 100 to 1600 Gy, and it was found that the thermoluminescence (TL) response is a linear function of dose. The glow curve displays two maxima centred at 170 and 350 degrees C, which does not shift when dose changes, indicating that first-order kinetics processes are involved. From the results, it is concluded that the new nanodiamond films are promising high-dose TL dosimeters.

Neospora caninum seropositivity and association with abortions in dairy cows in Mexico

The seroprevalence of Neospora caninum infection was estimated from a sample of 813 cattle from 20 dairy herds in five regions in Mexico. The true prevalence of infection was estimated to be 42% (95% CI: 39, 46). Seropositivity was associated with abortion (odds ratio (OR)=2.0) and was higher among cows raised on-farm (41%), than among replacement cattle purchased outside the farm (28%). The ORs relating abortion to seropositivity in individual herds ranged from 1.3 to 10. Overall, 26% of the abortions were attributed to N. caninum.

Seasonal occurrence of Ctenocephalides felis felis and Ctenocephalides canis (Siphonaptera: Pulicidae) infesting dogs and cats in an urban area in Cuernavaca, Mexico

The seasonal occurrence of Ctenocephalides felis felis (Bouché and Ctenocephalides canis (Curtis) infestation on dogs and cats in Cuernavaca City in Mexico, was determined by examining 1,803 dogs and 517 cats at two veterinary clinics during 1995-1997. The overall flea infestation was 30.3 and 30.1% for dogs and cats, respectively. There were no significant differences (P > 0.05) in percentage of infestation among years for both hosts. The infestation was somewhat higher in spring, summer, and autumn than in winter, but no statistical differences was found among seasons (P > 0.05) for both pets. No relationship existed between percentage of flea infestation and temperature or rainfall among seasons. On dogs, 81.1% were infested with only C. felis felis, 16.8% with C. canis, and 2% had both flea species; whereas 92.3% of the cats were infested with C. felis felis and 7.7% with C. felis felis and C. canis. The cat flea was the most prevalent flea species found other than C. canis; no other species were found on the dogs and cats. It appeared that flea life cycle development continued throughout the year.

Seasonal distribution of Rhipicephalus sanguineus ticks (Acari: Ixodidae) on dogs in an urban area of Morelos, Mexico

Between 1993 and 1995, we examined 1742 dogs at two veterinary clinics in Cuernavaca City in Mexico for the presence of Rhipicephalus sanguineus ticks. The overall tick infestation prevalence was 20% and there were no significant differences (p > 0.05) between different years. The prevalence was somewhat higher in spring, summer and autumn (20% or more) than in winter (13.7%). A positive correlation (p < 0.01) was found between prevalence of ticks and rainfall in spring, summer and autumn, whereas in winter there was only a correlation with temperature. Different stages of the tick were found and it was calculated that 2.5 generations could be completed each year. It is concluded that the environmental conditions of Cuernavaca City favour development and maintenance of R. sanguineus ticks throughout the year and that its role as a vector of diseases poses a threat to dogs and may have potential zoonotic risks.

Anti-tick effects of Stylosanthes humilis and Stylosanthes hamata on plots experimentally infested with Boophilus microplus larvae in Morelos, Mexico

The anti-tick effects of the tropical pasture legumes Stylosanthes humilis and Stylosanthes hamata were evaluated and compared with two common grasses, Cenchurus ciliaris and Andropogon gayanus, in the state of Morelos, Mexico, on plots experimentally infested with larvae of the tick Boophilus microplus. The effect was evaluated by recovery of larvae from the experimental plots by flagging during a 4 week period. The anti-tick effect due to Stylosanthes was significantly higher for S. humilis and S. hamata (p < 0.05) and slightly better for S. humilis (3% survival) than for S. hamata (12% survival). Further studies are required to determine the potential role of Stylosanthes plants for tick control in Mexico.
