Coupled-Channel Analysis of the χ_{c1}(3872) Line Shape with BESIII Data. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2024; 132:151903. Abstract
We perform a study of the χ_{c1}(3872) line shape using the data samples of e^{+}e^{-}→γχ_{c1}(3872), χ_{c1}(3872)→D^{0}D[over ¯]^{0}π^{0}, and π^{+}π^{-}J/ψ collected with the BESIII detector. The effects of the coupled channels and the off-shell D^{*0} are included in the parametrization of the line shape. The line shape mass parameter is obtained to be M_{X}=(3871.63±0.13_{-0.05}^{+0.06}) MeV. Two poles are found on the first and second Riemann sheets corresponding to the D^{*0}D[over ¯]^{0} branch cut. The pole location on the first sheet is much closer to the D^{*0}D[over ¯]^{0} threshold than the other, and is determined to be 7.04±0.15_{-0.08}^{+0.07} MeV above the D^{0}D[over ¯]^{0}π^{0} threshold with an imaginary part -0.19±0.08_{-0.19}^{+0.14} MeV.

Abstract
Using a sample of (10087±44)×10^{6} J/ψ events, which is about 45 times larger than that was previously analyzed, a further investigation on the J/ψ→γ3(π^{+}π^{-}) decay is performed. A significant distortion at 1.84 GeV/c^{2} in the line shape of the 3(π^{+}π^{-}) invariant mass spectrum is observed for the first time, which could be resolved by two overlapping resonant structures, X(1840) and X(1880). The new state X(1880) is observed with a statistical significance larger than 10σ. The mass and width of X(1880) are determined to be 1882.1±1.7±0.7 MeV/c^{2} and 30.7±5.5±2.4 MeV, respectively, which indicates the existence of a pp[over ¯] bound state.

Abstract
Using e^{+}e^{-} collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 7.33 fb^{-1} recorded by the BESIII detector at center-of-mass energies between 4.128 and 4.226 GeV, we present an analysis of the decay D_{s}^{+}→π^{+}π^{-}e^{+}ν_{e}, where the D_{s}^{+} is produced via the process e^{+}e^{-}→D_{s}^{*±}D_{s}^{∓}. We observe the f_{0}(980) in the π^{+}π^{-} system and the branching fraction of the decay D_{s}^{+}→f_{0}(980)e^{+}ν_{e} with f_{0}(980)→π^{+}π^{-} measured to be (1.72±0.13_{stat}±0.10_{syst})×10^{-3}, where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. The dynamics of the D_{s}^{+}→f_{0}(980)e^{+}ν_{e} decay are studied with the simple pole parametrization of the hadronic form factor and the Flatté formula describing the f_{0}(980) in the differential decay rate, and the product of the form factor f_{+}^{f_{0}}(0) and the c→s Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element |V_{cs}| is determined for the first time to be f_{+}^{f_{0}}(0)|V_{cs}|=0.504±0.017_{stat}±0.035_{syst}. Furthermore, the decay D_{s}^{+}→f_{0}(500)e^{+}ν_{e} is searched for the first time but no signal is found. The upper limit on the branching fraction of D_{s}^{+}→f_{0}(500)e^{+}ν_{e}, f_{0}(500)→π^{+}π^{-} decay is set to be 3.3×10^{-4} at 90% confidence level.

Abstract
By analyzing 7.33 fb^{-1} of e^{+}e^{-} annihilation data collected at center-of-mass energies between 4.128 and 4.226 GeV with the BESIII detector, we report the observation of the semileptonic decay D_{s}^{+}→η^{'}μ^{+}ν_{μ}, with a statistical significance larger than 10σ, and the measurements of the D_{s}^{+}→ημ^{+}ν_{μ} and D_{s}^{+}→η^{'}μ^{+}ν_{μ} decay dynamics for the first time. The branching fractions of D_{s}^{+}→ημ^{+}ν_{μ} and D_{s}^{+}→η^{'}μ^{+}ν_{μ} are determined to be (2.235±0.051_{stat}±0.052_{syst})% and (0.801±0.055_{stat}±0.028_{syst})%, respectively, with precision improved by factors of 6.0 and 6.6 compared to the previous best measurements. Combined with the results for the decays D_{s}^{+}→ηe^{+}ν_{e} and D_{s}^{+}→η^{'}e^{+}ν_{e}, the ratios of the decay widths are examined both inclusively and in several ℓ^{+}ν_{ℓ} four-momentum transfer ranges. No evidence for lepton flavor universality violation is found within the current statistics. The products of the hadronic form factors f_{+,0}^{η^{(')}}(0) and the c→s Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element |V_{cs}| are determined. The results based on the two-parameter series expansion are f_{+,0}^{η}(0)|V_{cs}|=0.452±0.010_{stat}±0.007_{syst} and f_{+,0}^{η^{'}}(0)|V_{cs}|=0.504±0.037_{stat}±0.012_{syst}, which help to constrain present models on f_{+,0}^{η^{(')}}(0). The forward-backward asymmetries are determined to be ⟨A_{FB}^{η}⟩=-0.059±0.031_{stat}±0.005_{syst} and ⟨A_{FB}^{η^{'}}⟩=-0.064±0.079_{stat}±0.006_{syst} for the first time, which are consistent with the theoretical calculation.

Abstract
Based on data samples collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider, the process e^{+}e^{-}→Σ^{+}Σ[over ¯]^{-} is studied at center-of-mass energies sqrt[s]=2.3960, 2.6454, and 2.9000 GeV. Using a fully differential angular description of the final state particles, both the relative magnitude and phase information of the Σ^{+} electromagnetic form factors in the timelike region are extracted. The relative phase between the electric and magnetic form factors is determined to be sinΔΦ=-0.67±0.29(stat)±0.18(syst) at sqrt[s]=2.3960 GeV, ΔΦ=55°±19°(stat)±14°(syst) at sqrt[s]=2.6454 GeV, and 78°±22°(stat)±9°(syst) at sqrt[s]=2.9000 GeV. For the first time, the phase of the hyperon electromagnetic form factors is explored in a wide range of four-momentum transfer. The evolution of the phase along with four-momentum transfer is an important input for understanding its asymptotic behavior and the dynamics of baryons.

Abstract
Based on 4.4 fb^{-1} of e^{+}e^{-} annihilation data collected at the center-of-mass energies between 4.60 and 4.70 GeV with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider, the pure W-boson-exchange decay Λ_{c}^{+}→Ξ^{0}K^{+} is studied with a full angular analysis. The corresponding decay asymmetry is measured for the first time to be α_{Ξ^{0}K^{+}}=0.01±0.16(stat)±0.03(syst). This result reflects the noninterference effect between the S- and P-wave amplitudes. The phase shift between S- and P-wave amplitudes has two solutions, which are δ_{p}-δ_{s}=-1.55±0.25(stat)±0.05(syst) rad or 1.59±0.25(stat)±0.05(syst) rad.

Abstract
The quantum entangled J/ψ→Σ^{+}Σ[over ¯]^{-} pairs from (1.0087±0.0044)×10^{10} J/ψ events taken by the BESIII detector are used to study the nonleptonic two-body weak decays Σ^{+}→nπ^{+} and Σ[over ¯]^{-}→n[over ¯]π^{-}. The CP-odd weak decay parameters of the decays Σ^{+}→nπ^{+} (α_{+}) and Σ[over ¯]^{-}→n[over ¯]π^{-} (α[over ¯]_{-}) are determined to be 0.0481±0.0031_{stat}±0.0019_{syst} and -0.0565±0.0047_{stat}±0.0022_{syst}, respectively. The decay parameter α[over ¯]_{-} is measured for the first time, and the accuracy of α_{+} is improved by a factor of 4 compared to the previous results. The simultaneously determined decay parameters allow the first precision CP symmetry test for any hyperon decay with a neutron in the final state with the measurement of A_{CP}=(α_{+}+α[over ¯]_{-})/(α_{+}-α[over ¯]_{-})=-0.080±0.052_{stat}±0.028_{syst}. Assuming CP conservation, the average decay parameter is determined as ⟨α_{+}⟩=(α_{+}-α[over ¯]_{-})/2=-0.0506±0.0026_{stat}±0.0019_{syst}, while the ratios α_{+}/α_{0} and α[over ¯]_{-}/α[over ¯]_{0} are -0.0490±0.0032_{stat}±0.0021_{syst} and -0.0571±0.0053_{stat}±0.0032_{syst}, where α_{0} and α[over ¯]_{0} are the decay parameters of the decays Σ^{+}→pπ^{0} and Σ[over ¯]^{-}→p[over ¯]π^{0}, respectively.

Abstract
We study the process e^{+}e^{-}→Λ_{c}^{+}Λ[over ¯]_{c}^{-} at twelve center-of-mass energies from 4.6119 to 4.9509 GeV using data samples collected by the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider. The Born cross sections and effective form factors (|G_{eff}|) are determined with unprecedented precision after combining the single and double-tag methods based on the decay process Λ_{c}^{+}→pK^{-}π^{+}. Flat cross sections around 4.63 GeV are obtained and no indication of the resonant structure Y(4630), as reported by Belle, is found. In addition, no oscillatory behavior is discerned in the |G_{eff}| energy dependence of Λ_{c}^{+}, in contrast to what is seen for the proton and neutron cases. Analyzing the cross section together with the polar-angle distribution of the Λ_{c}^{+} baryon at each energy point, the moduli of electric and magnetic form factors (|G_{E}| and |G_{M}|) are extracted and separated. For the first time, the energy dependence of the form factor ratio |G_{E}/G_{M}| is observed, which can be well described by an oscillatory function.

Abstract
A narrow structure in the pΛ[over ¯] system near the mass threshold, named as X(2085), is observed in the process e^{+}e^{-}→pK^{-}Λ[over ¯] with a statistical significance greater than 20σ. Its spin and parity are determined for the first time to be J^{P}=1^{+} in an amplitude analysis, with a statistical significance greater than 5σ over other quantum numbers (0^{-},1^{-} and 2^{+}). The pole positions of X(2085) are measured to be M_{pole}=(2084_{-2}^{+4}±9) MeV and Γ_{pole}=(58_{-3}^{+4}±25) MeV, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second ones are systematic. The analysis is based on the study of the process e^{+}e^{-}→pK^{-}Λ[over ¯] and uses the data samples collected with the BESIII detector at the center-of-mass energies sqrt[s]=4.008, 4.178, 4.226, 4.258, 4.416, and 4.682 GeV with a total integrated luminosity of 8.35 fb^{-1}.

Abstract
The process e^{+}e^{-}→D_{s}^{*+}D_{s}^{*-} is studied with a semi-inclusive method using data samples at center-of-mass energies from threshold to 4.95 GeV collected with the BESIII detector operating at the Beijing Electron Positron Collider. The Born cross sections of the process are measured for the first time with high precision in this energy region. Two resonance structures are observed in the energy-dependent cross sections around 4.2 and 4.4 GeV. By fitting the cross sections with a coherent sum of three Breit-Wigner amplitudes and one phase-space amplitude, the two significant structures are assigned masses of (4186.8±8.7±30) and (4414.6±3.4±6.1) MeV/c^{2}, widths of (55±15±53) and (122.5±7.5±8.1) MeV, where the first errors are statistical and the second ones are systematic. The inclusion of a third Breit-Wigner amplitude is necessary to describe a structure around 4.79 GeV.

Abstract
Using 7.33 fb^{-1} of e^{+}e^{-} collision data taken with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider, we report the first experimental study of the purely leptonic decay D_{s}^{*+}→e^{+}ν_{e}. Our data contain a signal of this decay with a statistical significance of 2.9σ. Abstract
Using (1.0087±0.0044)×10^{10} J/ψ events collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII storage ring, the process Ξ^{0}n→Ξ^{-}p is studied, where the Ξ^{0} baryon is produced in the process J/ψ→Ξ^{0}Ξ[over ¯]^{0} and the neutron is a component of the ^{9}Be, ^{12}C, and ^{197}Au nuclei in the beam pipe. A clear signal is observed with a statistical significance of 7.1σ. The cross section of the reaction Ξ^{0}+^{9}Be→Ξ^{-}+p+^{8}Be is determined to be σ(Ξ^{0}+^{9}Be→Ξ^{-}+p+^{8}Be)=(22.1±5.3_{stat}±4.5_{sys}) mb at the Ξ^{0} momentum of 0.818 GeV/c, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. No significant H-dibaryon signal is observed in the Ξ^{-}p final state. This is the first study of hyperon-nucleon interactions in electron-positron collisions and opens up a new direction for such research.

Abstract
We present the first measurements of the electric and magnetic form factors of the neutron in the timelike (positive q^{2}) region as function of four-momentum transfer. We explored the differential cross sections of the reaction e^{+}e^{-}→n[over ¯]n with data collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII accelerator, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 354.6 pb^{-1} in total at twelve center-of-mass energies between sqrt[s]=2.0-2.95 GeV. A relative uncertainty of 18% and 12% for the electric and magnetic form factors, respectively, is achieved at sqrt[s]=2.3935 GeV. Our results are comparable in accuracy to those from electron scattering in the comparable spacelike region of four-momentum transfer. The electromagnetic form factor ratio R_{em}≡|G_{E}|/|G_{M}| is within the uncertainties close to unity. We compare our result on |G_{E}| and |G_{M}| to recent model predictions, and the measurements in the spacelike region to test the analyticity of electromagnetic form factors.

Abstract
Using 4.7 fb^{-1} of e^{+}e^{-} collision data at center-of-mass energies from 4.661 to 4.951 GeV collected by the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider, we observe the X(3872) production process e^{+}e^{-}→ωX(3872) for the first time. The significance is 7.8σ, including both the statistical and systematic uncertainties. The e^{+}e^{-}→ωX(3872) Born cross section and the corresponding upper limit at 90% confidence level at each energy point are reported. The line shape of the cross section indicates that the ωX(3872) signals may be from the decays of some nontrivial structures.

The data samples used correspond to an integrated luminosity of 17.9 fb^{-1} and were collected by the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII storage ring. Three enhancements around 4.20, 4.47, and 4.67 GeV are visible. The resonances have masses of 4209.6±4.7±5.9 MeV/c^{2}, 4469.1±26.2±3.6 MeV/c^{2}, and 4675.3±29.5±3.5 MeV/c^{2} and widths of 81.6±17.8±9.0 MeV, 246.3±36.7±9.4 MeV, and 218.3±72.9±9.3 MeV, respectively, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. The first and third resonances are consistent with the ψ(4230) and ψ(4660) states, respectively, while the second one is compatible with the ψ(4500) observed in the e^{+}e^{-}→K^{+}K^{-}J/ψ process. These three charmoniumlike ψ states are observed in the e^{+}e^{-}→D^{*0}D^{*-}π^{+} process for the first time.

Evidence for the Cusp Effect in η' Decays into ηπ^{0}π^{0}. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2023; 130:081901. Abstract
Using a sample of 4.3×10^{5} η^{'}→ηπ^{0}π^{0} events selected from the ten billion J/ψ event dataset collected with the BESIII detector, we study the decay η^{'}→ηπ^{0}π^{0} within the framework of nonrelativistic effective field theory. Evidence for a structure at π^{+}π^{-} mass threshold is observed in the invariant mass spectrum of π^{0}π^{0} with a statistical significance of around 3.5σ, which is consistent with the cusp effect as predicted by the nonrelativistic effective field theory. After introducing the amplitude for describing the cusp effect, the ππ scattering length combination a_{0}-a_{2} is determined to be 0.226±0.060_{stat}±0.013_{syst}, which is in good agreement with theoretical calculation of 0.2644±0.0051.

Abstract
The study of the Cabibbo-favored semileptonic decay Λ_{c}^{+}→Λe^{+}ν_{e} is reported using a 4.5 fb^{-1} data sample of e^{+}e^{-} annihilations collected at center-of-mass energies ranging from 4.600 GeV to 4.699 GeV with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider. The branching fraction of the decay is measured to be B(Λ_{c}^{+}→Λe^{+}ν_{e})=(3.56±0.11_{stat}±0.07_{syst})%, which is the most precise measurement to date. Furthermore, we perform an investigation of the internal dynamics in Λ_{c}^{+}→Λe^{+}ν_{e}. We provide the first direct comparisons of the differential decay rate and form factors with those predicted from lattice quantum chromodynamics (LQCD) calculations. Combining the measured branching fraction with a q^{2}-integrated rate predicted by LQCD, we determine |V_{cs}|=0.936±0.017_{B}±0.024_{LQCD}±0.007_{τ_{Λ_{c}}}.

Abstract
The radiative hyperon decay Λ→nγ is studied using (10087±44)×10^{6} J/ψ events collected with the BESIII detector operating at BEPCII. The absolute branching fraction of the decay Λ→nγ is determined to be (0.832±0.038_{stat}±0.054_{syst})×10^{-3}, which is a factor of 2.1 lower and 5.6 standard deviations different than the previous measurement. By analyzing the joint angular distribution of the decay products, the first determination of the decay asymmetry α_{γ} is reported with a value of -0.16±0.10_{stat}±0.05_{syst}.

Abstract
Using e^{+}e^{-} annihilation data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 6.32 fb^{-1} collected at center-of-mass energies between 4.178 and 4.226 GeV with the BESIII detector, we perform the first amplitude analysis of the decay D_{s}^{+}→K_{S}^{0}K^{+}π^{0} and determine the relative branching fractions and phases for intermediate processes. We observe an a_{0}-like state with mass of 1.817 GeV in its decay to K_{S}^{0}K^{+} for the first time. In addition, we measure the ratio {B[D_{s}^{+}→K[over ¯]^{*}(892)^{0}K^{+}]/B[D_{s}^{+}→K[over ¯]^{0}K^{*}(892)^{+}]} to be 2.35_{-0.23stat}^{+0.42}±0.10_{syst}. Precise Measurements of Decay Parameters and CP Asymmetry with Entangled Λ-Λ[over ¯] Pairs. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2022; 129:131801. Abstract
Based on 10 billion J/ψ events collected at the BESIII experiment, a search for CP violation in Λ decay is performed in the difference between CP-odd decay parameters α_{-} for Λ→pπ^{-} and α_{+} for Λ[over ¯]→p[over ¯]π^{+} by using the process e^{+}e^{-}→J/ψ→ΛΛ[over ¯]. With a five-dimensional fit to the full angular distributions of the daughter baryon, the most precise values for the decay parameters are determined to be α_{-}=0.7519±0.0036±0.0024 and α_{+}=-0.7559±0.0036±0.0030, respectively. The Λ and Λ[over ¯] averaged value of the decay parameter is extracted to be α_{avg}=0.7542±0.0010±0.0024 with unprecedented accuracy. The CP asymmetry A_{CP}=(α_{-}+α_{+})/(α_{-}-α_{+}) is determined to be -0.0025±0.0046±0.0012, which is one of the most precise measurements in the baryon sector. The reported results for the decay parameter will play an important role in the studies of the polarizations and CP violations for the strange, charmed and beauty baryons.

Evidence for a Neutral Near-Threshold Structure in the K_{S}^{0} Recoil-Mass Spectra in e^{+}e^{-}→K_{S}^{0}D_{s}^{+}D^{*-} and e^{+}e^{-}→K_{S}^{0}D_{s}^{*+}D^{-}. Abstract
We study the processes e^{+}e^{-}→K_{S}^{0}D_{s}^{+}D^{*-} and e^{+}e^{-}→K_{S}^{0}D_{s}^{*+}D^{-}, as well as their charge conjugated processes, at five center-of-mass energies between 4.628 and 4.699 GeV, using data samples corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.8 fb^{-1} collected by the BESIII detector at the BEPCII storage ring. Based on a partial reconstruction technique, we find evidence of a structure near the thresholds for D_{s}^{+}D^{*-} and D_{s}^{*+}D^{-} production in the K_{S}^{0} recoil-mass spectrum, which we refer to as the Z_{cs}(3985)^{0}. Fitting with a Breit-Wigner line shape, we find the mass of the structure to be (3992.2±1.7±1.6) MeV/c^{2} and the width to be (7.7_{-3.8}^{+4.1}±4.3) MeV, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. The significance of the Z_{cs}(3985)^{0} signal is found to be 4.6σ including both the statistical and systematic uncertainty. We report the Born cross section multiplied by the branching fraction at different energy points. The mass of the Z_{cs}(3985)^{0} is close to that of the Z_{cs}(3985)^{+}. Assuming SU(3) symmetry, the cross section of the neutral channel is consistent with that of the charged one. Hence, we conclude that the Z_{cs}(3985)^{0} is the isospin partner of the Z_{cs}(3985)^{+}.

Abstract
Background and Purpose—
Many patients with acute ischemic stroke are not eligible for thrombolysis or mechanical reperfusion therapies due to contraindications, inaccessible vascular occlusions, late presentation, or large infarct core. Sphenopalatine ganglion (SPG) stimulation to enhance collateral flow and stabilize the blood-brain barrier offers an alternative, potentially more widely deliverable, therapy.
Methods—
In a randomized, sham-controlled, double-masked trial at 41 centers in 7 countries, patients with anterior circulation ischemic stroke not treated with reperfusion therapies within 24 hours of onset were randomly allocated to active SPG stimulation or sham control. The primary efficacy outcome was improvement beyond expectations on the modified Rankin Scale of global disability at 90 days (sliding dichotomy), assessed in the modified intention-to-treat population. The initial planned sample size was 660 patients, but the trial was stopped early when technical improvements in device placement occurred, so that analysis of accumulated experience could be conducted to inform a successor trial.
Results—
Among 303 enrolled patients, 253 received at least one active SPG or sham stimulation, constituting the modified intention-to-treat population (153 SPG stimulation and 100 sham control). Age was median 73 years (interquartile range, 64–79), 52.6% were female, deficit severity on the National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale was median 11 (interquartile range, 9–15), and time from last known well median 18.6 hours (interquartile range, 14.5–22.5). For the primary outcome, improved 3-month disability beyond expectations, rates in the SPG versus sham treatment groups were 49.7% versus 40.0%; odds ratio, 1.48 (95% CI, 0.89–2.47);
P
=0.13. A significant treatment interaction with stroke location (cortical versus noncortical) was noted,
P
=0.04. In the 87 patients with confirmed cortical involvement, rates of improvement beyond expectations were 50.0% versus 27.0%; odds ratio, 2.70 (95% CI, 1.08–6.73);
P
=0.03. Similar response patterns were observed for all prespecified secondary efficacy outcomes. No differences in mortality or serious adverse event safety end points were observed.
Conclusions—
SPG stimulation within 24 hours of onset is safe in acute ischemic stroke. SPG stimulation was not shown to statistically significantly improve 3-month disability above expectations, though favorable outcomes were nominally higher with SPG stimulation. Beneficial effects may distinctively be conferred in patients with confirmed cortical involvement. The results of this study need to be confirmed in a larger pivotal study.

Abstract
Neurovascular coupling and cerebral autoregulation are two brain intrinsic vasoregulative mechanisms that rapidly adjust local cerebral blood flow. This study examined if stenotic disease affects both mechanisms in the posterior cerebral artery. Ten patients with altogether 13 stenosed (≥50%) posterior cerebral artery (PCA) sides were studied. In addition, 6 control persons without a PCA stenosis were examined. Cerebral blood flow velocity was assessed from both PCAs with transcranial Doppler sonography; blood pressure was measured noninvasively via fingerplethysmography. Neurovascular coupling was assessed by a control system approach using a standard visual stimulation paradigm. Cerebral autoregulation dynamics were measured from spontaneous oscillations of blood pressure and cerebral blood flow velocity by transfer function analysis (phase and gain). The parameters of neurovascular coupling and cerebral autoregulation did not show relevant differences between controls, nonstenosed sides, and stenosed sides. The 3 severely stenosed PCA sides showed a trend to a minor functional flow velocity change and attenuation of the neurovascular coupling mechanism in relation to sides with moderate stenosis. Phase and gain were not altered on sides with PCA stenosis. We conclude that in a group of patients with mainly moderate stenosis of the PCA neurovascular coupling and dynamic autoregulation dynamics seem to be unaltered.

Abstract
The intracellular level of the proto-oncoprotein beta-catenin is a parameter for the activity of the Wnt pathway, which has been linked to carcinogenesis. The paper introduces a novel sandwich-based ELISA for the determination of the beta-catenin concentration in lysates from cells or tissues. The advantages of the method were proven by determining beta-catenin levels in cell lines and in cells after activation of the Wnt pathway. Analysis revealed high beta-catenin concentrations in the cell lines HeLa, KB, HT1080, MCF-7, U-87 and U-373, which had not been described before. Beta-catenin concentrations were compared in HEK293 and C57MG cells after activation of the Wnt pathway. The beta-catenin concentrations increased by different factors depending on whether the Wnt pathway was activated by incubation with LiCl or with Wnt-3a-conditioned medium. This finding indicated that the beta-catenin level depends on the way and level of Wnt pathway activation. The quantitative analysis of beta-catenin in colorectal tumours revealed high beta-catenin levels in tumours with truncating mutations in the APC gene.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/METHOD We compared the growth hormone response to a modified exercise test--the treadmill exhausting test--to pharmacological stimulation tests in 77 children with short stature. Each child underwent the treadmill test to individual exhaustion and at least one pharmacological test for GH stimulation. To determine the point of individual exhaustion, the heart rate, workload and oxygen consumption were measured. RESULTS The mean +/- SEM peak GH concentration (ng/ml) in 47 small, normally growing children (group 1) was 16.1 +/- 1.3 in the pharmacological tests vs. 5.0 +/- 0.6 after a treadmill exhausting test. Thirty children with GH deficiency (group 2) had mean +/- SEM peak GH concentrations (ng/ml) of 5.5 +/- 0.5 in the pharmacological tests and 4.1 +/- 0.7 after physical exercise. The groups differed significantly in the pharmacological tests (p < 0.001) but not in the exhausting test. We found a 90% sensitivity but only a 11% specificity for the treadmill exhausting test compared to the diagnosis obtained by pharmacological testing. CONCLUSION We do not recommend the treadmill exhausting test in clinical practice of pediatric endocrinology at all.

A cluster of seven tightly linked polymorphisms in the IL-13 gene is associated with total serum IgE levels in three populations of white children. J Allergy Clin Immunol 2000; 105:506-13. Abstract
BACKGROUND Increased levels of total serum IgE are a strong risk factor for the development of asthma. IgE is also involved in host defenses against parasites and fungi. Linkage of total serum IgE with markers located close to the 3 Mb cluster of cytokine genes in chromosome 5q31 has been reported. IL-4 or IL-13 are regarded as essential for IgE synthesis. OBJECTIVE We tested whether polymorphisms in the IL-13 gene might explain the linkage between chromosome 5q31 and total serum IgE levels. METHODS We used denaturing HPLC to detect polymorphisms in overlapping PCR fragments of the IL-13 gene including promoter and 3' untranslated regions. After sequencing was performed to identify the locations of the polymorphisms, PCR and primer-induced restriction site assays were used to genotype subjects in 3 unselected populations. RESULTS We report here 7 polymorphisms (6 novel) in IL-13. Four of these polymorphisms are tightly linked to a variant in the terminal portion of the coding region of the gene that results in a predicted amino acid change in residue 130 (Arg130Gln). The Gln form is strongly associated (P =.000002) with increased serum IgE levels in 3 different populations comprising a total of 1399 children. Two additional polymorphisms in the promoter region of IL-13 are more loosely linked to Arg130Gln and are also less significantly associated with total serum IgE levels. CONCLUSION These data suggest that the Arg130Gln polymorphism in IL-13, or others in close linkage with it, is associated with the development of the elevated serum IgE phenotype.

Prevalence of respiratory and atopic disorders among children in the East and West of Germany five years after unification. Eur Respir J 1999; 14:862-70. Abstract
Living conditions in eastern Germany have changed rapidly since unification in 1990 and little is known about how these changes affect the prevalence of atopic diseases. This study describes methods and prevalences of a large epidemiological project investigating determinants of childhood asthma and allergies in eastern (Dresden and Leipzig) and western (Munich) Germany in 1995/1996. Community based random samples of 9-11 yr old children in Dresden (n=3,017) and Munich (n=2,612), and of 5-7 yr old children in Dresden (n=3,300), Leipzig (n=3,167) and Munich (n=2,165) were studied by parental questionnaires, bronchial challenges with hypertonic saline, skin examination, skin-prick tests, and measurements of specific and total serum immunoglobulin (Ig)E using Phase II modules of the International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood (ISAAC). In 9-11 yr old children, the prevalence of physician diagnosed asthma (7.9% versus 10.3%; p<0.01) and bronchial hyperresponsiveness (15.7% versus 19.9%; p<0.05) was lower in Dresden than in Munich. No difference between Munich and Dresden was observed in the prevalence of diagnosed hay fever, skin test reactivity to > or = 1 allergen, and increased levels (>0.35 kU x L(-1)) of specific IgE against inhalant and food allergens. Symptoms and visible signs of atopic eczema tended to be more prevalent in Dresden. Similar East-West differences between the three study areas were seen in the younger age group. These findings are in line with recently observed increases in the prevalence of hay fever and atopic sensitization, but not of asthma and bronchial hyperresponsiveness, among 9-11 yr old children in Leipzig.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Several surveys in children and adults have shown significantly lower prevalences of asthma and allergic diseases in eastern Europe than in western countries. In the former East Germany tremendous changes towards western lifestyle have occurred since unification. The aim of this survey was to investigate time trends in the prevalence of asthma and allergic diseases among children living in the eastern part of Germany. METHODS In 1995-96, 2334 (87.5%) schoolchildren in Leipzig participated in a cross-sectional study that used the same methods as a previous survey done shortly after the fall of communism in 1991-92. A self-administered questionnaire was distributed to the parents. Children underwent cold-air challenge and allergy skinprick tests to six common aeroallergens. FINDINGS The prevalence of hay fever (2.3% [34/1454] vs 5.1% [115/2252], p<0.0001) and atopic sensitisation (19.3% [252/1303] vs 26.7% [434/1624], p<0.0001) increased significantly between 1991-92 and 1995-96. However, there was no significant change in the prevalence of asthma, asthma-related symptoms, or bronchial hyper-responsiveness. INTERPRETATION These findings suggest important differences in the development of atopic disorders. The children were born about 3 years before unification and were therefore exposed to western living conditions only after the third birthday. Thus, factors operating very early in life may be particularly important for the acquisition of childhood asthma, whereas the development of atopic sensitisation and hay fever may also be affected by environmental factors occurring beyond infancy.

Abstract
Sulthiame is effectively used in the treatment of benign and symptomatic focal epilepsy in children. Hyperventilation as a symptom is a well known adverse effect of the drug. Alterations of the acid-base equilibrium have been described for the drug, however, very infrequently only in adults without a detailed evaluation of the disorders status. The case presented here demonstrates a mild compensated metabolic acidosis in a child which, for the first time, is described using the methods of complete blood gas and electrolytes analysis.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to compare psychosocial characteristics of children with asthma and children with bronchial hyperreactivity with those of normal children. A population-based study of 2634 children (mean age, 10 years) was carried out. Pulmonary function tests of children were performed in children before and after cold air hyperventilation challenge to determine bronchial hyperreactivity. Parental assessment of children's behavior was evaluated with 15 questions about school/learning habits, level of activity, communication/affection, and sleeping patterns. A factor analysis was performed and the factor loading adjusted for confounders compared in the different groups. Asthmatic children sleep less well than normal and hyperreactive children (p < 0.001). Unexpectedly, however, all other single items did not differ significantly. As a result of the factorial analysis we obtained two factors. On the first factor, measuring school behavior and learning, there was a small difference between asthmatic and normal children, which could not be found on the second factor indicating activity and communication. We conclude that psychosocial differences of asthmatic children are less remarkable than expected. As a result of the examination of the hyperreactive children it is likely that asthmatic children are influenced more by secondary psychosocial factors than by any primary effect of asthmatic disease.

Abstract
The Schimmelpenning-Feuerstein-Mims-syndrome includes deformities and dysplasias of the skin, eyes, brain, skeleton, and heart. It may result from a malformation of the ectodermal and mesodermal blastoderm in the third week of gestation. We here report on 6 patients who presented between 1977 and 1993 in comparison with those cases in the literature. All children presented neurologic symptoms. The major symptom was a linear epidermal nevus. In addition we found mental retardation, convulsions, asymmetries of the cranial structures or dilated cerebral ventricles ipsilateral to the nevus. One child had a defect of the skull and scalp, a symptom not previously mentioned in the literature. Our patients exhibited a wide phenotypice spectrum ranging from mild to severe forms. Severe neurological symptoms were also found in patients despite minimal dermal involvement.

Air pollution and upper respiratory symptoms in children from East Germany. Eur Respir J 1995; 8:723-8. Abstract
Whereas evidence of adverse effects of air pollution on lower respiratory tract illnesses in children is increasing, little is known about the effects of high and moderate levels of air pollution on the incidence of upper respiratory illnesses. 9 to 11 year old schoolchildren (n = 1,854) living in Leipzig, East Germany were studied. The presence of upper respiratory symptoms was documented by a physician. Daily mean and maximum concentrations of SO2, particulate matter (PM) and NOx, as well as temperature and humidity, were measured. Furthermore, a self-administered questionnaire was distributed to the parents to assess confounding factors. Parents of 1,500 (81%) children returned the questionnaire. When controlling for paternal education, passive smoke exposure, number of siblings, temperature and humidity, increased risks for the development of upper respiratory symptoms were found in the winter months for SO2 mean concentrations (odds ratio (OR) = 1.72; 95% confidence interval (95% CI) 1.19-2.49). NOx mean concentrations (OR = 1.53; 95% CI 1.01-2.31) and PM maximum values (OR = 1.62; 95% CI 1.08-2.45). In the summer months, only NOx mean concentrations were associated with a significantly increased risk (OR = 1.82; 95% CI 1.21-2.73). A combination of high mean levels of different pollutants resulted in the highest risk (OR = 2.10; 95% CI 1.30-3.37 in the winter, and OR = 2.16; 95% CI 1.23-3.81 in the summer). We conclude that high concentrations of SO2, and moderate levels of particulate matters and NOx are associated with an increased risk of developing upper respiratory symptoms in childhood.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Pertussis infection and allergic sensitization. ANNALS OF ALLERGY 1994; 73:450-4. [PMID: 7978540] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [MESH Headings] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Indexed: 01/28/2023]
Abstract
BACKGROUND The immunogenic activity of B. pertussis infection has been described in various laboratory, animal, and clinical studies. There is, however, no information on the impact of pertussis on allergies in the total population. OBJECTIVE To compare the prevalence of allergic sensitization and allergic rhinitis in children with and without previous pertussis infection. METHODS A population-based, cross-sectional study was carried out on 13,937 10-year-old children in the western (Munich and Southern Bavaria) and eastern parts of Germany (Leipzig and the region around Halle). A total of 11,969 questionnaires (85.9%) given to the parents were collected. Data from 9,484 German children (questionnaire and skin prick tests with six different allergens) were analyzed. RESULTS Pertussis was much more common in the western than in the eastern part of Germany. The adjusted odds ratio for any allergic sensitization after pertussis was only slightly increased in western Germany with 1.3 (95% confidence limits 1.2 to 1.5) and in eastern Germany with 1.5, (1.2 to 1.8) but not for allergic rhinitis with 1.0 (0.7 to 1.4) and in Eastern Germany 1.3 (0.8 to 1.9). CONCLUSIONS Infection with pertussis seems to have only a weak influence on allergic sensitization and does not explain the observed differences in allergic sensitization between western and eastern Germany.

Abstract
UNLABELLED The objective of this analysis was to determine the relationship between wheezing at different age groups in children and the prevalence of bronchial hyperreactivity at the age of 10. A population-based cross-sectional study was conducted in Leipzig and the region around Halle in Germany. Of 3105 10-year-old children, 2658 questionnaires (85.6%) were returned. In addition 2279 (73.4%) pulmonary function tests were performed before and after cold air challenge. 658 children (24.8%) had recurrent wheezing during their lifetime. In 579 children the individual time course could be evaluated (46 children with and 533 without a physician-confirmed diagnosis of asthma). Wheezing began most frequently in the 1st year of life (44.1% of all wheezing children) with the highest annual prevalence in the 3rd year (71.0% of all wheezing children). Wheezing which started in the first 2 years of life, had disappeared in most of the children by the age of 10. However, if wheezing began later than the 3rd year it was more persisting. Bronchial hyperreactivity measured after cold air challenge was higher in the group with recurrent wheezing (24.1%) than in the group without wheezing (18.8%, P = 0.004). CONCLUSION Wheezing is a very common symptom in childhood and only partly associated with later bronchial hyperreactivity. On the other hand, asthma is often not diagnosed despite bronchial hyperreactivity and many years of wheezing.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the relation between skin test reactivity in children and number of siblings. DESIGN Cross sectional survey among schoolchildren aged 9-11 years. Skin prick tests in the children and self completion of written questionnaire by their parents. SUBJECTS 5030 children in Munich and 2623 children in Leipzig and Halle, Germany. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Atopic status assessed by skin prick tests. RESULTS After possible confounders were controlled for, the prevalence of atopic sensitisation decreased linearly with increasing number of siblings (odds ratio = 0.96 for one sibling, 0.67 for five or more siblings; P = 0.005). In atopic children the severity of the skin test reaction as assessed by the weal size was not associated with the number of siblings. CONCLUSIONS Factors directly or indirectly related to the number of siblings may decrease the susceptibility of children to become atopic. Thus, declining family size may in part contribute to the increased prevalence of atopic diseases reported in Western countries over the past few decades.

Abstract
The German reunification offers a unique opportunity to study the impact of environmental factors on the development of childhood respiratory and allergic disorders in ethnically similar populations. We investigated the prevalence of asthma, hay fever, atopy, and bronchial hyperresponsiveness (BHR) in 9- to 11-year old children in West Germany (n = 5,030) and East Germany (n = 2,623). A self-administered questionnaire was distributed to the parents. Children underwent cold air challenge and allergy skin prick tests. Atopic sensitization was considerably more frequent in West German children than in their peers in East Germany (36.7% versus 18.2%; odds ratio [OR] = 2.6, p < 0.0001). The prevalence of current asthma and hay fever was significantly higher in West Germany when compared with that in East Germany (5.9% versus 3.9%; OR = 1.5, p < 0.0001 and 8.6% versus 2.7%; OR = 3.4, p < 0.0001, respectively). Bronchitis, however, was more prevalent in East Germany than in the western part of the country. The prevalence of BHR as assessed by cold air challenge was higher in West Germany compared with that in East Germany (8.3% versus 5.5%, OR = 1.6, p < 0.001). Logistic regression showed that the West German study area was no longer a significant independent determinant of asthma once sensitization to mites, cats, and pollen was taken into account. We conclude that sensitization to aeroallergens is strikingly more frequent in West Germany than in East Germany and this may explain the differences in the prevalence of asthma and hay fever between the two parts of the country.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Questions on asthma symptoms like "wheezing" or "whistling in the chest" must be easily understood by the general population. In preparation of a standardized German questionnaire we investigated, how children with asthma and their parents would describe symptoms during an asthma attack. METHODS From June until December 1991, 72 children aged 13-15 years, and parents of 138 children aged 7-15 years with diagnosed asthma, where interviewed whilst they visited the outpatient department of the universities of Berlin, Leipzig, and Munich. The parents and children were asked to answer a questionnaire which included a list of adjectives and descriptions proposed to describe the child's breathing during an asthma attack. The items included descriptions which have been used on German questionnaires, others which we considered possibly useful, anc control items which we considered inappropriate. Parents and children were asked to rate on scales how much they would agree or disagree to the proposed items as possible descriptors. Descriptive and cluster analyses revealed those descriptions which received the best ratings. RESULTS The rating was rather independent of the sex of the child, the respondent (child vs parent) and the severity of attacks, but differences between regions were observed. CONCLUSION The verbal descriptors with the best rating will be used for the wording of a German questionnaire on asthma symptoms.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To compare the prevalence of asthma and allergic disorders among children in Munich, western Germany, and Leipzig, eastern Germany, where environmental exposure, particularly air concentrations of sulphur dioxide and particulate matter, and living conditions have differed over the past 45 years. DESIGN Prevalence surveys among school-children aged 9-11 years in Leipzig and Munich. Self completion of written questionnaire by the children's parents and lung function measurements. SUBJECTS 1051 children in Leipzig and 5030 in Munich. SETTING Primary schools. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Reported lifetime prevalence of asthma and allergic disorders, and bronchial hyperresponsiveness assessed by cold air inhalation challenge. RESULTS The lifetime prevalence of asthma diagnosed by a doctor was 7.3% (72) in Leipzig and 9.3% (435) in Munich; prevalence of wheezing were 20% (191) and 17% (786) respectively. The prevalence of diagnosed bronchitis was higher in Leipzig than Munich (30.9% (303) v 15.9% (739); p < 0.01). A significant drop in forced expiratory volume (> 9%) after cold air challenge was measured in 6.4% (57) of children in Leipzig and in 7.7% (345) of those in Munich. Hay fever (2.4% (24) v 8.6% (410); p < 0.01) and typical symptoms of rhinitis (16.6% (171) v 19.7% (961); p < 0.05) were reported less often in Leipzig than in Munich. CONCLUSIONS No significant differences were seen in the lifetime prevalence of asthma, wheezing, and bronchial hyperresponsiveness between children in Leipzig and Munich. The lifetime prevalence of bronchitis was higher in Leipzig than in Munich. The lower prevalence rates of allergic disorders in Leipzig could point toward aetiological factors that are associated with Western lifestyle and living conditions.
