Abstract
ABSTRACT A male 15-year-old captive Siberian tiger (Panthera tigris altaica) developed pelvic limb hypermetry over the past 10 years. Recently, an ulcerated black nodule located caudally to the right ear was observed. The animal was submitted to surgery for removing the tumor, but died during anesthetic recovery. At necropsy, another infiltrative nodule was observed caudally to the right ear. Histologically, both nodules corresponded to melanocytic neoplasia, varying from heavily pigmented to amelanotic, with metastasis to mediastinal lymph nodes, spleen and lung. Lipofuscinosis and corpora amylacea were histologically observed in the central nervous system. Macroscopic and histologic findings confirmed the diagnosis of skin metastatic melanoma in a captive adult Siberian tiger.

Abstract
Canine visceral leishmaniosis (CVL) is an important zoonotic disease, which is endemic in Brazil and several other parts of the world. The disease may affect multiple organs, but lesions in the oral cavity are considered uncommon. Twenty-three cases of oral lesions compatible with CVL were diagnosed from 2015 to 2018 in the Federal District, Brazil. Six cases were confirmed to be CVL based on histopathology, immunohistochemistry and polymerase chain reaction amplification of Leishmania infantum kDNA. Most of the affected dogs were >9 years of age, of mixed breed and were classified as having stage C of the disease. The most important gross findings were ulcerated nodular lesions in the tongue, lip, gingiva and hard palate. Microscopically, there was lymphoplasmacytic to granulomatous inflammation that was diffuse, moderate to severe and associated with ulceration. CVL should be considered in the differential diagnosis of nodular and ulcerative oral lesions in dogs.

Abstract
The fluid imbibition-coupled laser interferometry (FICLI) technique has been applied to detect and quantify surface changes and pore dimension variations in nanoporous anodic alumina (NAA) structures. FICLI is a noninvasive optical technique that permits the determination of the NAA average pore radius with high accuracy. In this work, the technique is applied after each step of different surface modification paths of the NAA pores: (i) electrostatic immobilization of bovine serum albumin (BSA), (ii) covalent attachment of streptavidin via (3-aminipropyl)-triethoxysilane and glutaraldehyde grafting, and (iii) immune complexation. Results show that BSA attachment can be detected as a reduction in estimated radius from FICLI with high accuracy and reproducibility. In the case of the covalent attachment of streptavidin, FICLI is able to recognize a multilayer formation of the silane and the protein. For immune complexation, the technique is able to detect different antibody-antigen bindings and distinguish different dynamics among different immune species.

Abstract
ABSTRACT The aim of this report is to describe a case of marked osseous metaplasia in the placenta associated with abortion in a mare. A 19-year-old Campolina mare with a history of multiple parturitions and absence of reproductive failure, aborted a fetus with approximately six months of gestation. There were no gross changes in the fetus and the placenta. Microscopically, there was multifocal replacement of fetal connective mesenchyme of the chorionic villi with well differentiated and partially mineralized osseous tissue (confirmed by von Kossa staining). To further characterize the collagenous component of the lesion, sections of the placenta were stained with Masson’s trichrome and Picrosirius red. Osseous tissue deposition had abundance of type I collagen. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of osseous metaplasia in the placenta of a mare associated with abortion at mid gestation, presumably due to placentary insufficiency.

Abstract
The use of nanoporous anodic alumina (NAA) for the development of drug delivery systems has gained much attention in recent years. The release of drugs loaded inside NAA pores is complex and depends on the morphology of the pores. In this study, NAA, with different three-dimensional (3D) pore structures (cylindrical pores with several pore diameters, multilayered nanofunnels, and multilayered inverted funnels) were fabricated, and their respective drug delivery rates were studied and modeled using doxorubicin as a model drug. The obtained results reveal optimal modeling of all 3D pore structures, differentiating two drug release stages. Thus, an initial short-term and a sustained long-term release were successfully modeled by the Higuchi and the Korsmeyer-Peppas equations, respectively. This study demonstrates the influence of pore geometries on drug release rates, and further presents a sustained long-term drug release that exceeds 60 days without an undesired initial burst.

Abstract
Controlled drug delivery systems are an encouraging solution to some drug disadvantages such as reduced solubility, deprived biodistribution, tissue damage, fast breakdown of the drug, cytotoxicity, or side effects. Self-ordered nanoporous anodic alumina is an auspicious material for drug delivery due to its biocompatibility, stability, and controllable pore geometry. Its use in drug delivery applications has been explored in several fields, including therapeutic devices for bone and dental tissue engineering, coronary stent implants, and carriers for transplanted cells. In this work, we have created and analyzed a stimuli-responsive drug delivery system based on layer-by-layer pH-responsive polyelectrolyte and nanoporous anodic alumina. The results demonstrate that it is possible to control the drug release using a polyelectrolyte multilayer coating that will act as a gate.

Abstract
Fluid imbibition-coupled laser interferometry (FICLI) is a technique in which the kinetics of a fluid infiltrating a nanoporous anodic alumina (NAA) membrane is monitored by the interference of a laser beam at the membrane top and bottom surfaces. Further processing of the measured data results in an estimate of the pore radius. In this work, we study the accuracy of FICLI in the detection of small changes in pore radius, and we evaluate the possibility of using such detection as a sensing paradigm. The accuracy is estimated by measuring samples with increasing pore radius, obtained by successive wet etching steps, and repeatability is evaluated by using different liquids. For decreasing pore radius, samples obtained by the successive deposition of polyelectrolyte double layers are used. With the aim of evaluating the possibility of the FICLI method to sense biological binding events, BSA attachment detection is demonstrated by applying FICLI to samples before and after immobilization of the protein. Results show that the technique permits an accurate estimation of the pore radius, the pore-etching rate (with a radius variation of retch,DI = 1.05 nm/min ± 0.11 nm/min), and the polyelectrolyte double layer thickness (with a radius variation of rPAH/PSS = 3.2 nm ± 0.2 nm per polyelectrolyte double layer). Furthermore, the pore radius reduction measured after BSA immobilization (dBSA = 4.9 nm ± 1.1 nm) is in good agreement with the protein size, as reported in the literature. With these results, we provide a sound basis for the applicability of FICLI as a sensitive technique for the characterization of NAA pore radius modifications.

Abstract
Ischemia-reperfusion injury (I/R-I), which is unavoidable in liver transplantation, impairs liver regeneration and predisposes to liver failure. The three major mitogen-activated protein-kinases (MAPKs): ERK, p38, and JNK, are critical in the transmission of signals triggered by proinflammatory cytokines, by stress, and by growth factors. JNK and p38alpha activation have been associated with apoptosis; p38beta with cell survival; and ERK with proliferation. Previous studies have demonstrated gender dimorphism in hepatocellular dysfunction after experimental trauma and hemorrhage. Female mice are protected to a much greater extent from I/R-I than male mice. We assessed the effects of 17beta-estradiol (17beta-E) on liver function, host survival, and cellular activation of MAPK in a murine model of I/R-I in reduced-size livers. C57BL/6 mice were subjected to 45 minutes of warm ischemia (70% of the liver mass). After reperfusion, the nonischemic lobes were excised. Vehicle, 17beta-E or the estrogen receptor antagonist ICI-182780, was delivered 1 hour before the injury. We evaluated AST and apoptosis as well as activation of JNK, p38, and ERK. Female mice showed a lower level of hepatocellular injury (AST = 445 +/- 82 IU/L) after I/R-I compared with male mice (AST = 1400 +/- 210). 17beta-E decreased the liver injury in male mice (AST = 522 +/- 77), an effect that was partially reversed by ICI-182,780 (910 +/- 92). A higher rate of apoptosis was observed in male animals given saline (enrichment factor = 7.22 +/- 0.8) versus those treated with 17beta-E (5.85 +/- 0.3, P < .05). A significant increase in liver regeneration, as assessed by the percentage of liver weight/body weight was demonstrated in females (184% +/- 24%) and male mice given 17beta-E (168% +/- 22%) compared with male mice given vehicle (9% +/- 4%). 17beta-E significantly down-regulated JNK and p38alpha activities, whereas I/R-I promoted p38beta and ERK activation. These results suggest that the cytoprotective effects of 17beta-E on I/R-I to reduced-size livers are associated with selective modulation of MAPK kinases.
