Teledentistry and management protocol in a pediatric dental department during the first COVID-19 lockdown

BACKGROUND

During the first COVID-19 lockdown, from March 12 to May 15, 2020, private dental practices in France and in many other countries remained closed. Dental emergencies were therefore partly redirected to hospital dental departments. The aim of this article is to describe the modalities of remote management of emergencies during this period, by the pediatric dentistry department of Nancy University Hospital (France), via an oral telemedicine protocol.

PATIENTS AND METHODS

All parents of children in difficulty were invited to contact the department by phone. Initial triage was managed by externs, interns, or dental practitioners following a management protocol specifically adapted to pediatric dentistry for this context. Depending on the situation (type of complaint, geographical location of the patients, possibility of travel, availability of digital equipment, etc.), an oral telemedicine solution was proposed using the Covotem® software (Maincare Society, Canejan, France) via the Pulsy platform (public interest grouping validated by the Grand Est Regional Agency for Health) and possibly using an intraoral photographic protocol suggested by the team.

RESULTS

During this period, 176 patients used the pediatric dental department, 40 of whom were managed via oral telemedicine. Of these children, 57% (23/40) required an appointment in the department during the lockdown, 30% (12/40) did not require follow-up, and 13% (5/40) required a post-lockdown appointment. This teledentistry protocol resulted in a diagnosis in most cases (93%).

CONCLUSION

Patient management through oral telemedicine appears to be an effective tool for planning and organizing oral healthcare. It should be more widely considered in dentistry in the current context of pressure in medical emergencies, significant medical needs, and medical desertification.

PHAREO study: Perceived and observed accessibility to therapeutic drugs used for treating patients with inherited bleeding disorders

WHAT IS KNOWN AND OBJECTIVE

The dispensing of clotting factor concentrates in hospital pharmacies imposes accessibility constraints on patients and their caregivers, thereby increasing the disease burden. Very few studies have addressed these issues so far in terms of individual perceptions and actual difficulties. The PHAREO study aims to report patient's perception of treatment accessibility and evaluate spatial accessibility.

METHODS

The PHAREO study is an observational survey based on a questionnaire specifically designed for the study purpose in collaboration with patients' representatives in the second demographic and economic French region.

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

We collected 293 responses (participation rate of 64.1%) which show that 89.8% of respondents were either very or rather satisfied with regard to access to treatment. However, respondents reported difficulties in accessing the hospital pharmacy. The data also showed that 79.2% of respondents tended to over-estimate travel time which was reported above their acceptable threshold for 39.2% of them. The main determinants of dissatisfaction were parental burden (OR 2.5 [1.3; 4.8], p = 0.008) and waiting time at the hospital pharmacy (OR 1.5 [1.1;2.0], p = 0.016, per 10 min increase).

WHAT IS NEW AND CONCLUSION

The PHAREO study provides subjective and objective data regarding satisfaction levels of persons with haemophilia and other coagulation deficiencies, with a high representativeness rate for patients on prophylaxis (87.5%). Both respondents and hospital pharmacists pled for an evolution of the current dispensing circuit to improve access to treatment and reduce the burden for patients. Currently, the community pharmacists are apart from the dispensing circuit. The authors propose improvements in the pathway of care for patients and their caregivers by including the community pharmacists alongside the hospital pharmacists in a centralized coordination scheme.

OP0053 LUMBAR MECHANICALS TRACTIONS IN RADICULAR PAIN OF DISCUS ORIGIN: A PROSPECTIVE CONTROLLED RANDOMIZED TRIAL OF SUPERIORITY ON 428 PATIENTS IN REIMS HOSPITAL UNIVERSITY RHEUMATOLOGY SERVICE

Background

Medical cares guidelines for lumbosciatics pains are well codified in several country: NSAIDs, analgesics and physical therapy associated, at physician’s discretion, to lumbar epidural infiltrations.

Lumbar mechanical tractions have not a clear identified place in the lumbosciatic pain treatment. It is empirically realized in France’s several medical centers.

However, no current literature studies have shown a significant efficacity of lumbar mechanicals tractions in this indication. Most of the time, studies presented a lack of power or methodological bias. (1,2)

Objectives

The aim of this study is to demonstrate the superiority of lumbar traction associated with standard treatment (epidural injections, analgesics, NSAID) compared to medical treatment alone in lombosciatics pains of discal origin.

Methods

We performed a monocentric interventional prospective superiority study from 2013 to 2021, randomized controlled in the rheumatology unit of Reims University Hospital. Patients included had to present a lumboradicular pain, with a concordant discal hernia on MRI or scanner, and to be naive of any lumbar surgery. We recorded demographical and clinical data at baseline and during the follow up. After their consent, patients were randomized between the traction group and the medical group. The medical group received the standard treatment (NSAIDs, analgesics) associated with at least 2 epidural infiltrations. The traction group received the standard treatment, infiltrations and at least 3 lumbar tractions. Treatment was considered as effective if there was a pain diminution at least 25 % between baseline and at 1 month. Patients were assessed on their pain at baseline, at 1 month and at 3 months of their treatment. Pain was assessed using a visual analog scale on lumbar and radicular localisation.

Superiority analysis has been performed by using the Chi-2 test.

Results

Four Hundred twenty-eight patients were included: 207 patients in the lumbar traction group, 210 patients in the medical treatment alone group and 11 patients with missing data. The male/female sex ratio was 1.39:1. The patients suffered from 49.52% (205 patients) right and 50.48% (209 patients) left lumboradiculalgia, mostly L5 (41% or 172 patients) and S1 (50% or 207 patients).

The pains evaluation at one month was recorded for 377 patients: 190 in traction group (50.3%) and 187 in medical group (49.7%). Two hundred twelve/377 (56.2%) patients had a pain reduction of at least 25 % at one month: 117/377 patients in tractions group (31%) and 95/377 in medical group (25%).

Twenty/377 patients (5%) were operated on before the one-month recall. Therefore, patients treated with lumbar traction had a significant reduction in pain (p=0.036) compared to patients with medical treatment alone.

Conclusion

This study is one of the first randomized controlled studies highlighting the superiority of lumbar traction in combination with standard treatment compared to medical treatment alone.

Sink versus tilt penetration into shaken dry granular matter: The role of the foundation

We study the behavior of cylindrical objects as they sink into a dry granular bed fluidized due to lateral oscillations. Somewhat unexpectedly, we have found that, within a large range of lateral shaking powers, cylinders with flat bottoms sink vertically, while those with a "foundation" consisting of a shallow ring attached to their bottom, tilt besides sinking. The latter scenario seems to dominate independently from the nature of the foundation when strong enough lateral vibrations are applied. We are able to explain the observed behavior by quasi-2D numerical simulations, which also demonstrate the influence of the intruder's aspect ratio. The vertical sink dynamics is explained with the help of a Newtonian equation of motion for the intruder. Our findings may shed light on the behavior of buildings and other manmade structures during earthquakes.

POS0045 LEAST SIGNIFICANT CHANGE IN BONE DENSITOMETRY IN PATIENTS WITH OBESITY

Background:

Dual energy X-ray absoprtiometry is the reference method to mesure bone mineral density (1). Loss of bone mineral density is significant if it exceeds the least significant change. The threshold value used in general population is 0,03 g/cm2 (2). Patients with obesity are known for having a higher bone mineral density due to metabolism and physiopathology characteristics (3,4).

Objectives:

The aim of our study was to determine the least significant change in bone densitometry in patients with obesity.

Methods:

We conducted an interventionnal study in 120 patients with obesity who performed a bone densitometry. We measured twice the bone mineral density at the lumbar spine, the femoral neck and the total hip in the same time (5,6). We determined the least significant change in bone densitometry from each pair of measurements, using the Bland and Altman method. We also determined the least significant change in bone densitometry according to each stage of obesity.

Results:

The least significant change in bone densitometry in patients with obesity is 0,046g/cm2 at the lumbar spine, 0.069 g/cm2 at the femoral neck and 0.06 g/cm2 at the total hip.

Conclusion:

The least significant change in bone densitometry in patients with obesity is higher than in general population. These results may improve DXA interpretation in this specific population, and may personnalize their medical care.

Antibiotic use and resistance: a nationwide questionnaire survey among French dentists

The aim of this survey was to describe the attitudes and self-reported practices of French dentists towards antibiotic use and resistance and to compare practices with national guidelines. A nationwide cross-sectional internet-based survey was conducted among the 41,800 French dentists. The online questionnaire was distributed through professional networks from April 2017 to April 2018. Seven-hundred seventy-five dentists participated but only 455 questionnaires were complete enough to be included in the analyses. Amoxicillin was the most frequently prescribed antibiotic (65.8%, 1783/2711), followed by spiramycin + metronidazole fixed-dose combination (11.6%, 312/2711) and amoxicillin-clavulanic acid (10.3%, 279/2711). The main indications for use were abscess (349/423, 82.5%), cervicofacial cellulitis (74.2%, 314/423), and pericoronitis (58.6%, 239/408). Most dentists (90.5%, 381/421) considered that antibiotic resistance is of concern but only half of them (56.3%, 238/423) felt adequately informed about antibiotic use. Many dentists did not comply with the national guidelines: the majority of them declared inappropriate antibiotic prescriptions for 11/17 clinical situations. They did not prescribe antibiotics for 5/6 clinical situations requiring prophylaxis. They reported that the publication of clinical guidelines is the main factor influencing their prescriptions (71.0%, 299/421). They wished to receive regular updates of national guidelines in the form of practical sheets (93.0%, 172/185). French dentists should urgently be targeted by antibiotic stewardship initiatives.

Geographic disparities in bladder cancer incidence among women in the department of Bouches-du-Rhône

Key messages

We identify for the first time a cluster of bladder cancers in women in France. Practitioners need to think about bladder cancers in women with urinary signs because this cancer will become a public health issue in the future.

Grapevine trunk diseases under thermal and water stresses

Heat and water stresses, individually or combined, affect both the plant (development, physiology, and production) and the pathogens (growth, morphology, dissemination, distribution, and virulence). The grapevine response to combined abiotic and biotic stresses is complex and cannot be inferred from the response to each single stress. Several factors might impact the response and the recovery of the grapevine, such as the intensity, duration, and timing of the stresses. In the heat/water stress-GTDs-grapevine interaction, the nature of the pathogens, and the host, i.e., the nature of the rootstock, the cultivar and the clone, has a great importance. This review highlights the lack of studies investigating the response to combined stresses, in particular molecular studies, and the misreading of the relationship between rootstock and scion in the relationship GTDs/abiotic stresses. Grapevine trunk diseases (GTDs) are one of the biggest threats to vineyard sustainability in the next 30 years. Although many treatments and practices are used to manage GTDs, there has been an increase in the prevalence of these diseases due to several factors such as vineyard intensification, aging vineyards, or nursery practices. The ban of efficient treatments, i.e., sodium arsenite, carbendazim, and benomyl, in the early 2000s may be partly responsible for the fast spread of these diseases. However, GTD-associated fungi can act as endophytes for several years on, or inside the vine until the appearance of the first symptoms. This prompted several researchers to hypothesise that abiotic conditions, especially thermal and water stresses, were involved in the initiation of GTD symptoms. Unfortunately, the frequency of these abiotic conditions occurring is likely to increase according to the recent consensus scenario of climate change, especially in wine-growing areas. In this article, following a review on the impact of combined thermal and water stresses on grapevine physiology, we will examine (1) how this combination of stresses might influence the lifestyle of GTD pathogens, (2) learnings from grapevine field experiments and modelling aiming at studying biotic and abiotic stresses, and (3) what mechanistic concepts can be used to explain how these stresses might affect the grapevine plant status.

Sinking during earthquakes: Critical acceleration criteria control drained soil liquefaction

This article focuses on liquefaction of saturated granular soils, triggered by earthquakes. Liquefaction is defined here as the transition from a rigid state, in which the granular soil layer supports structures placed on its surface, to a fluidlike state, in which structures placed initially on the surface sink to their isostatic depth within the granular layer. We suggest a simple theoretical model for soil liquefaction and show that buoyancy caused by the presence of water inside a granular medium has a dramatic influence on the stability of an intruder resting at the surface of the medium. We confirm this hypothesis by comparison with laboratory experiments and discrete-element numerical simulations. The external excitation representing ground motion during earthquakes is simulated via horizontal sinusoidal oscillations of controlled frequency and amplitude. In the experiments, we use particles only slightly denser than water, which as predicted theoretically increases the effect of liquefaction and allows clear depth-of-sinking measurements. In the simulations, a micromechanical model simulates grains using molecular dynamics with friction between neighbors. The effect of the fluid is captured by taking into account buoyancy effects on the grains when they are immersed. We show that the motion of an intruder inside a granular medium is mainly dependent on the peak acceleration of the ground motion and establish a phase diagram for the conditions under which liquefaction happens, depending on the soil bulk density, friction properties, presence of water, and peak acceleration of the imposed large-scale soil vibrations. We establish that in liquefaction conditions, most cases relax toward an equilibrium position following an exponential in time. We also show that the equilibrium position itself, for most liquefaction regimes, corresponds to the isostatic equilibrium of the intruder inside a medium of effective density. The characteristic time to relaxation is shown to be essentially a function of the peak ground velocity.

Physico-chemical studies of resveratrol, methyl-jasmonate and cyclodextrin interactions: an approach to resveratrol bioproduction optimization

trans-Resveratrol (RSV) is a natural phenolic molecule of the stilbene family known for its anti-oxidant properties in the field of nutraceuticals and cosmetics. Its production by grapevine cell suspensions is induced by the addition to the culture medium of elicitor compounds, methyl jasmonate (MeJA) and cyclodextrins (CDs). Physico-chemical studies were performed to understand the mechanism of action of CDs on this bioproduction of RSV. Inclusion complexes of RSV in CDs were first observed and then interactions with MeJA were identified using various analytical techniques such as UV and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopies, mass spectrometry (MS) and isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC).

The role of cyclodextrins in the bioproduction of resveratrol in the presence of methyl-jasmonate is rationalized, leading to solutions for the improvement of bioproduction.

Effects of prolonged exposure to CO2 on behaviour, hormone secretion and respiratory muscles in young female rats

Atmospheric CO₂ concentrations increased significantly over the last century and continuing increases are expected to have significant effects on current ecosystems. This study evaluated the behavioural and physiological (hormone status, muscle structure) effects of prolonged CO₂ exposure in young female Wistar rats exposed at 700ppm of CO₂ during 6h a day for 15days. Prolonged CO₂ exposure, though not continuous, produced significant disturbances in behaviour with an increase in drinking, grooming and resting, and a reduction in rearing, jumping-play and locomotor activity. Furthermore, CO₂ exposure was accompanied by increased plasma levels of corticosterone, suggesting that prolonged exposure to CO₂ was stressful. The muscular structure can also be modified also when respiratory working conditions change. The expression of myosin heavy chain was significantly affected in the diaphragm and oral respiratory muscles: Masseter Superficialis and Anterior Digastric. Modified behaviour and hormonal changes both appear to be at the origin of the observed muscular adaptation.

Functional Characterization of Histone Chaperones Using SNAP-Tag-Based Imaging to Assess De Novo Histone Deposition

Histone chaperones-key actors in the dynamic organization of chromatin-interact with the various histone variants to ensure their transfer in and out of chromatin. In vitro chromatin assembly assays and isolation of protein complexes using tagged histone variants provided first clues concerning their binding specificities and mode of action. Here, we describe an in vivo method using SNAP-tag-based imaging to assess the de novo deposition of histones and the role of histone chaperones. This method exploits cells expressing SNAP-tagged histones combined with individual cell imaging to visualize directly de novo histone deposition in vivo. We show how, by combining this method with siRNA-based depletion, we could assess the function of two distinct histone chaperones. For this, we provide the details of the method as applied in two examples to characterize the function of the histone chaperones CAF-1 and HIRA. In both cases, we document the impact of their depletion on the de novo deposition of the histone variants H3.1 and H3.3, first in a normal context and second in response to DNA damage. We discuss how this cellular assay offers means to define in a systematic manner the function of any chosen chaperone with respect to the deposition of a given histone variant.

Acetylcholinesterase activity in the brain of dystonia musculorum (Dst(dt-J)) mutant mice

The dystonia musculorum (Dst(dt-J)) mutant mouse suffers from severe motor coordination deficits, characterized, among various symptoms, by a spastic ataxia and dystonic movements, indicating central defects in motor structures in addition to dystrophy of peripheral sensory tracts and partial degeneration of spinocerebellar tracts. Neurochemical alterations, notably in dopaminergic and noradrenergic systems, were previously observed in basal ganglia and cerebellum. A quantitative histochemical cartography of brain acetylcholinesterase activity in Dst(dt-J) mutants, in comparison with controls, revealed increases in the neostriatum, the habenula-interpeduncular pathway, the cholinergic pedunculopontine nucleus and its target structures, the thalamus, major regions of the basal ganglia, such as substantia nigra, ventral tegmental area, globus pallidum, and subthalamic nucleus, as well as in associated extrapyramidal regions, such as red nucleus, brainstem reticular formation, and superior colliculus. These acetylcholinesterase changes may play a role in motor deficits, particularly the dystonic symptomatology observed in the mutation.

[Intracranial extension of cutaneous facial squamous cell carcinoma: involvement of the neurotropic pathway]

BACKGROUND

Squamous cell carcinoma is the most common form of skin cancer after basal cell carcinoma. It comprises locoregional malignant tumours with more rapid and severe spread, and which may metastasise through blood or lymph, and through a less well-known neurotropic pathway. We report a case of late and slowly progressive recurrence of squamous cell carcinoma revealed and characterized by neurological symptoms alone.

OBSERVATION

A 69-year-old woman with a history of cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma on the left nostril edge removed 10 years earlier presented right trigeminal neuralgia in 2003. These symptoms gradually expanded and in 2007 a subcutaneous induration of the two cheeks appeared. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed subcutaneous infiltration of the 2 nasolabial sulci, as did contrast enhancement of the two trigeminal nerves up to the cavernous sinuses. Deep biopsy allowed a diagnosis of invasive squamous cell carcinoma to be made.

DISCUSSION

Neurotropism is an important feature of squamous cell carcinoma, and reveals the aggressive nature of this condition. This feature makes it hard to diagnose relapse since the neurological symptoms may be isolated for a long period, hence the need for systematic screening for perineural tumour sites on histological analysis of the initial lesion. Treatment for these forms is limited and for the moment consists of radiation, cetuximab and a combination of these two treatments.

Cluster of Legionnaires' disease associated with a public whirlpool spa, France, April-May 2010

In May 2010, a cluster of three cases of Legionnaires' disease was identified in France. The results of the epidemiological, environmental and microbiological investigations allowed the rapid identification of a public whirlpool spa as the most probable source of contamination and the implementation of appropriate control measures. This investigation has stressed the need for good cooperation between partners and the importance of the molecular analysis of Legionella strains.

Early events prior to visual symptoms in the apoplectic form of grapevine esca disease

Plant infection by pathogens generates various forms of symptoms. Most of them have been described as soon as they become visible, whereas preceding, discrete signs during incubation are poorly or not understood. In Vitis vinifera, esca-related pathogenic fungi inhabit living trunk wood and induce the so-called apoplexy, a sudden wilting of leaves within a few days. To further understand the apoplexy expression, the period preceding symptom appearance was investigated by following physiological and molecular markers associated with photosynthetic mechanisms and stress responses. Within the week preceding symptoms, drastic physiological alterations of photosynthesis were registered in pre-apoplectic vines, as revealed by a decrease in gas exchange, changes in chlorophyll fluorescence, and repression of photosynthesis-related genes. In the meantime, expression of defense-related genes was induced and amplified during symptom expression. Water-stress-related genes were specifically investigated because water transport may be impeded by clogging xylem vessels due to esca-causing fungi. Neither of the tested water-stress-related genes was affected in pre-apoplectic grapevine leaves whereas these genes were downregulated in drying leaves. Our results suggest that, during incubation of esca apoplexy, grapevine perceives some signals (likely fungi-originated toxins) and reacts by reducing photosynthesis and triggering defense mechanisms.

Streptomyces thinghirensis sp. nov., isolated from rhizosphere soil of Vitis vinifera

A novel actinomycete, strain S10(T), was isolated from rhizosphere soil of wild Vitis vinifera in Thinghir, Ouarzazate Province, Southern Morocco. The taxonomic status of this strain was established using a polyphasic approach. Strain S10(T) had white-grey aerial mycelium with long, spiral spore chains bearing smooth surfaced spores and produced a yellow diffusible pigment. Chemotaxonomic analyses showed that the cell wall of strain S10(T) contained ll-diaminopimelic acid and glycine. Phylogenetic analysis based on the almost complete 16S rRNA gene sequence indicated that strain S10(T) belonged to the Group I streptomycetes, branching off next to Streptomyces marokkonensis LMG 23016(T) from the Streptomyces violaceoruber group. DNA-DNA relatedness and phenotypic data distinguished strain S10(T) from the phylogenetically closest related type strains. It is therefore proposed that strain S10(T) (=CCMM B35(T)=DSM 41919(T)) represents the type strain of a novel species of the genus Streptomyces, for which the name Streptomyces thinghirensis sp. nov. is proposed.

Efficiency of Sesbania sesban and Acacia angustissima in limiting methanogenesis and increasing ruminally available nitrogen in a tropical grass-based diet depends on accession

Novel strategies to improve nutrient-poor tropical diets for ruminants should aim to increase feeding value and, simultaneously, reduce emissions of the greenhouse gas methane. Both aims were addressed in the present in vitro experiment when supplementing a low quality, tropical grass (Brachiaria humidicola; Centro Internacional de Agricultura Tropical accession number 6133) with foliage from various leguminous multi-purpose shrubs, all of them containing plant secondary metabolites in different concentrations. In detail, foliage of Acacia angustissima from the International Livestock Research Institute ( ILRI; accessions no. 459 and 15132), Sesbania sesban (ILRI 10865 and 15019), Samanea saman (ILRI 14884), and leafy crop residues of the grain legume Cajanus cajan (ILRI 16555) were supplemented at 200 g/kg dry matter. Additionally, a combination of C. cajan and S. sesban 10865 was tested. Effects on methanogenesis, ruminal nitrogen turnover and other fermentation traits were determined with the rumen simulation technique Rusitec. All supplements enhanced the fermentable nutrient supply, especially ruminally degradable crude protein, and improved the calculated microbial efficiency in nitrogen utilisation. Methanogenesis was limited by one accession of S. sesban (10865) and, less clearly, by one A. angustissima accession (459), while the other supplements remained ineffective. The first mentioned accessions proved to be far richer in several plant secondary metabolites, especially saponins and tannins. Provided in combination, C. cajan and S. sesban 10865 supported each other in their effects on nitrogen usage and total methane release. Accordingly, a combination strategy might provide, after being verified in vivo, a particularly promising option to improve low quality, tropical diets at limited environmental impact thus facilitating its adoption by stakeholders.

Sugars and flowering in the grapevine (Vitis vinifera L.)

Sugars play an important role in grapevine flowering. This complex process from inflorescence initiation to fruit maturity takes two growing seasons. Currently, most of the available data concern the involvement of sugars as energy sources during the formation of reproductive structures from initiation of inflorescences during the summer of the first year, until flower opening during the following spring. Sugars devoted to the development of reproductive structures are supplied either by wood reserves or by photosynthesis in leaves or inflorescences, depending on the stage of development. Female meiosis appears to be a key point in the success of flower formation because (i) flowers are vulnerable at this stage and (ii) it corresponds in the whole plant to the transition between reserve mobilization from perennial organs (roots, trunk, and canes) towards efficient leaf photosynthesis. The perturbation of reserve replenishment during the previous year provokes perturbation in the development of inflorescences, whereas altering the photosynthetic sources affects the formation of flowers during the same year. In particular, a lack of sugar availability in flowers at female meiosis caused by various environmental or physiological fluctuations may lead to drastic flower abortion. Apart from energy, sugars also play roles as regulators of gene expression and as signal molecules that may be involved in stress responses. In the future, these two topics should be further investigated in the grapevine considering the sensitivity of flowers to environmental stresses at meiosis.

Study of the decay Bs(0)-->Ds(*)Ds(*)

We report a study of the decay Bs(0)-->Ds(*)Ds(*) using a data sample corresponding to 1.3 fb(-1) of integrated luminosity collected by the D0 experiment in 2002-2006 during run II of the Fermilab Tevatron collider. One Ds(*) meson was partially reconstructed in the decay Ds-->phi mu nu, and the other Ds(*) meson was identified using the decay Ds-->phi pi where no attempt was made to distinguish Ds and Ds(*) states. For the branching fraction Br(Bs(0)-->Ds(*)Ds(*)) we obtain a 90% C.L. range [0.002,0.080] and central value 0.039(-0.017)(+0.019)(stat)(-0.015)(+0.016)(syst). This was subsequently used to make the most precise estimate of the width difference DeltaGamma(s)CP in the Bs(0)-Bs(0) system: DeltaGamma(s)CP/Gamma(s)=0.079(-0.035)(+0.038)(stat)(-0.030)(+0.031)(syst).

Search for production of single top quarks via tcg and tug flavor-changing-neutral-current couplings

We search for the production of single top quarks via flavor-changing-neutral-current couplings of a gluon to the top quark and a charm (c) or up (u) quark. We analyze 230 pb{-1} of lepton+jets data from pp[over] collisions at a center of mass energy of 1.96 TeV collected by the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. We observe no significant deviation from standard model predictions, and hence set upper limits on the anomalous coupling parameters kappa{g}{c}/Lambda and kappa{g}{u}/Lambda, where kappa{g} define the strength of tcg and tug couplings, and Lambda defines the scale of new physics. The limits at 95% C.L. are kappa{g}{c}/Lambda<0.15 TeV-1 and kappa{g}{u}/Lambda<0.037 TeV-1.

Measurement of the Lambdab0 lifetime using semileptonic decays

We report a measurement of the Lambda(b)(0) lifetime using a sample corresponding to 1.3 fb(-1) of data collected by the D0 experiment in 2002-2006 during run II of the Fermilab Tevatron collider. The Lambda(b)(0) baryon is reconstructed via the decay Lambda(b)(0)-->micronuLambda(c)(+)X. Using 4437+/-329 signal candidates, we measure the Lambda(b)(0) lifetime to be tau(Lambda(b)(0))=1.290(-0.110)(+0.119)(stat)(-0.091)(+0.087)(syst) ps, which is among the most precise measurements in semileptonic Lambda(b)(0) decays. This result is in good agreement with the world average value.

Properties of L=1 B(1) and B(2)* mesons

This Letter presents the first strong evidence for the resolution of the excited B mesons B(1) and B(2)* as two separate states in fully reconstructed decays to B(+)(*)pi(-). The mass of B(1) is measured to be 5720.6+/-2.4+/-1.4 MeV/c(2) and the mass difference DeltaM between B(2)* and B(1) is 26.2+/-3.1+/-0.9 MeV/c;{2}, giving the mass of the B(2)* as 5746.8+/-2.4+/-1.7 MeV/c(2). The production rate for B(1) and B(2)* mesons is determined to be a fraction (13.9+/-1.9+/-3.2)% of the production rate of the B+ meson.

Measurement of the Lambda b lifetime in the exclusive decay Lambda b --> J/psi Lambda

We have measured the Lambda b lifetime using the exclusive decay Lambda b --> J/psi Lambda, based on 1.2 fb(-1) of data collected with the D0 detector during 2002-2006. From 171 reconstructed Lambda b decays, where the J/psi and Lambda are identified via the decays J/psi --> mu+ mu- and Lambda --> ppi, we measured the Lambda b lifetime to be tau(Lambda b)=1.218 (+0.130)/(-0.115) (stat) +/- 0.042(syst) ps. We also measured the B0 lifetime in the decay B0 --> J/psi(mu+ mu-)K(0)/(S)(pi+ pi-) to be tau(B0)=1.501 (+0.078)/(-0.074) (stat) +/- 0.050(syst) ps, yielding a lifetime ratio of tau(Lambda b)/tau(B0)=0.811 (+0.096)/(-0.087) (stat) +/- 0.034(syst).

Search for stopped gluinos from pp collisions at square root s = 1.96 TeV

Long-lived, heavy particles are predicted in a number of models beyond the standard model of particle physics. We present the first direct search for such particles' decays, occurring up to 100 h after their production and not synchronized with an accelerator bunch crossing. We apply the analysis to the gluino (g), predicted in split supersymmetry, which after hadronization can become charged and lose enough momentum through ionization to come to rest in dense particle detectors. Approximately 410 pb(-1) of pp collisions at square root(s) = 1.96 TeV collected with the D0 detector during Run II of the Fermilab Tevatron collider are analyzed in search of such "stopped gluinos" decaying into a gluon and a neutralino (chi(1)(0)). Limits are placed on the (gluino cross section) x (probability to stop) x [BR(g --> g chi(1)(0))] as a function of the gluino and chi(1)(0) masses, for gluino lifetimes from 30 micros-100 h.

Search for third-generation scalar leptoquarks in pp at square root s=1.96 TeV

We report on a search for charge-1/3 third-generation leptoquarks (LQ) produced in pp collisions at square root s =1.96 TeV using the D0 detector at Fermilab. Third-generation leptoquarks are assumed to be produced in pairs and to decay to a tau neutrino and a b quark with branching fraction B. We place upper limits on sigma(pp --> LQLQ)B2 as a function of the leptoquark mass M(LQ). Assuming B=1, we exclude at the 95% confidence level third-generation scalar leptoquarks with M(LQ)<229 GeV.

Direct observation of the strange b baryon Xib-

We report the first direct observation of the strange b baryon Xi(b)- (Xi(b)+). We reconstruct the decay Xi(b)- -->J/psiXi-, with J/psi-->mu+mu-, and Xi--->Lambdapi--->ppi-pi- in pp collisions at square root of s =1.96 TeV. Using 1.3 fb(-1) of data collected by the D0 detector, we observe 15.2 +/- 4.4(stat)(-0.4)(+1.9)(syst) Xi(b)- candidates at a mass of 5.774 +/- 0.011(stat) +/- 0.015(syst) GeV. The significance of the observed signal is 5.5 sigma, equivalent to a probability of 3.3 x 10(-8) of it arising from a background fluctuation. Normalizing to the decay Lambda(b)-->J/psiLambda, we measure the relative rate sigma(Xi(b-) x B(Xi)b})- -->J/psiXi-)/sigma(Lambda(b)) x B(Lambda(b)-->J/psiLambda) = 0.28+/-0.09(stat)(-0.08)(+0.09)(syst).

Search for techniparticles in e+jets events at D0

We search for the technicolor process pp-->rhoT/omegaT-->WpiT in events containing one electron and two jets, in data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 390 pb(-1), recorded by the D0 experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron. Technicolor predicts that technipions pi(T) decay dominantly into bb, bc, or bc, depending on their charge. In these events b and c quarks are identified by their secondary decay vertices within jets. Two analysis methods based on topological variables are presented. Since no excess above the standard model prediction was found, the result is presented as an exclusion in the pi(T) vs rho(T) mass plane for a given set of model parameters.

Evidence for production of single top quarks and first direct measurement of |Vtb|

The D0 Collaboration presents first evidence for the production of single top quarks at the Fermilab Tevatron pp[over ] collider. Using a 0.9 fb(-1) dataset, we apply a multivariate analysis to separate signal from background and measure sigma(pp[over ]-->tb+X,tqb+X)=4.9+/-1.4 pb. The probability to measure a cross section at this value or higher in the absence of a signal is 0.035%, corresponding to a 3.4 standard deviation significance. We use the cross section measurement to directly determine the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element that describes the Wtb coupling and find 0.68<|V(tb)|</=1 at 95% C.L. within the standard model.

Measurement of the charge asymmetry in semileptonic Bs0 decays

We have performed the first direct measurement of the time-integrated flavor untagged charge asymmetry in semileptonic Bs0 decays ASLs,unt by comparing the decay rate of Bs0-->micro+Ds-nuX, where Ds- -->phipi- and phi-->K+K-, with the charge-conjugate Bs0 decay rate. This sample was selected from 1.3 fb-1 of data collected by the D0 experiment in run II of the Fermilab Tevatron collider. We obtain ASLs,unt=[1.23+/-0.97(stat)+/-0.17(syst)]x10(-2). Assuming that Deltam(s)/Gamma(s)>>1, this result can be translated into a measurement of the CP-violating phase in Bs0 mixing: DeltaGamma(s)/Deltam(s)tanphi(s)=[2.45+/-1.93(stat)+/-0.35(syst)]x10(-2).

Lifetime difference and CP-violating phase in the Bs0 system

From an analysis of the decay Bs0-->J/psi phi, we obtain the width difference between the light and heavy mass eigenstates DeltaGamma identical with (GammaL-GammaH)=0.17+/-0.09(stat)+/-0.02(syst) ps-1 and the CP-violating phase phis=-0.79+/-0.56(stat)(-0.01)(+0.14)(syst). Under the hypothesis of no CP violation (phis identical with 0), we obtain 1/Gamma=tau(Bs0)=1.52+/-0.08(stat)(-0.03)(+0.01)(syst) ps and DeltaGamma=0.12(-0.10)(+0.08)(stat)+/-0.02(syst) ps-1. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of about 1.1 fb-1 accumulated with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. This is the first direct measurement of the CP-violating mixing phase in the Bs0 system.

Experimental discrimination between charge 2e/3 top quark and charge 4e/3 exotic quark production scenarios

We present the first experimental discrimination between the 2e/3 and 4e/3 top quark electric charge scenarios, using top quark pairs (tt) produced in pp collisions at (square root) s = 1.96 TeV by the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. We use 370 pb;{-1} of data collected by the D0 experiment and select events with at least one high transverse momentum electron or muon, high transverse energy imbalance, and four or more jets. We discriminate between b- and b-quark jets by using the charge and momenta of tracks within the jet cones. The data are consistent with the expected electric charge, |q|=2e/3. We exclude, at the 92% C.L., that the sample is solely due to the production of exotic quark pairs QQ with |q|=4e/3. We place an upper limit on the fraction of QQ pairs rho<0.80 at the 90% C.L.

Measurement of the Bs(0) lifetime using semileptonic decays

We report a measurement of the Bs(0) lifetime in the semileptonic decay channel Bs(0) --> Ds- mu+ nuX (and its charge conjugate), using approximately 0.4 fb(-1) of data collected with the D0 detector during 2002-2004. Using 5176 reconstructed Ds- mu+ signal events, we have measured the Bs(0) lifetime to be tau(Bs(0))=1.398+/-0.044(stat)(-0.025)(+0.028)(syst) ps. This is the most precise measurement of the Bs(0) lifetime to date.

Search for pair production of scalar bottom quarks in pp collisions at square root of s = 1.96 TeV

A search for direct production of scalar bottom quarks (b) is performed with 310 pb(-1) of data collected by the D0 experiment in pp collisions at square root s = 1.96 TeV at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. The topology analyzed consists of two b jets and an imbalance in transverse momentum due to undetected neutralinos (chi(1)0), with chi(1)0 assumed to be the lightest supersymmetric particle. We find the data consistent with standard model expectations, and set a 95% C.L. exclusion domain in the (m(b), m(chi(1)0)) mass plane, improving significantly upon the results from run I of the Tevatron.

Search for neutral, long-lived particles decaying into two muons in pp[over] collisions at sqrt[s]=1.96 TeV

We present a search for a neutral particle, pair produced in pp[over] collisions at sqrt[s]=1.96 TeV, which decays into two muons and lives long enough to travel at least 5 cm before decaying. The analysis uses approximately 380 pb(-1) of data recorded with the D0 detector. The background is estimated to be about one event. No candidates are observed, and limits are set on the pair-production cross section times branching fraction into dimuons + X for such particles. For a mass of 10 GeV and lifetime of 4x10(-11) s, we exclude values greater than 0.14 pb (95% C.L.). These results are used to limit the interpretation of NuTeV's excess of dimuon events.

Search for the standard model Higgs Boson in the pp[over]-->ZH-->nunu[over]bb[over] channel

We report a search for the standard model (SM) Higgs boson based on data collected by the D0 experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 260 pb(-1). We study events with missing transverse energy and two acoplanar b jets, which provide sensitivity to the ZH production cross section in the nunu[over]bb[over] channel, and to WH production when the lepton from the W-->lnu decay is undetected. The data are consistent with the SM background expectation, and we set 95% C.L. upper limits on sigma(pp[over]-->ZH/WH)xB(H-->bb[over]) from 3.4/8.3 to 2.5/6.3 pb, for Higgs-boson masses between 105 and 135 GeV.

Search for associated higgs boson production WH-->WWW*-->l+/-nul'+/-nu'+X in pp collisions at square root s=1.96 Te V

We present a search for associated Higgs boson production in the process pp-->WH-->WWW*-->l;+/-nul'+/-nu'+X in final states containing two like-sign isolated electrons or muons (e+/-e;+/-, e+/-micro+/-, or micro+/-micro+/-). The search is based on D0 run II data samples corresponding to integrated luminosities of 360-380 pb-1. No excess is observed over the predicted standard model background. We set 95% C.L. upper limits on sigma(pp-->WH)xBr(H-->WW*) between 3.2 and 2.8 pb for Higgs boson masses from 115 to 175 GeV.

Alteration of photosynthesis in grapevines affected by esca

ABSTRACT To further understand the development of esca disease in grapevine, its physiological impact on plants grown in the vineyard was characterized, focusing mainly on photosynthesis. For this purpose, the state of the photosynthetic apparatus was evaluated in symptomatic and asymptomatic leaves in esca-infected grape plants, and wood carbohydrates stored in annual canes were assayed. In symptomatic leaves, esca greatly affected grapevine physiology. Foliar symptoms were associated with both stomatal closure and alteration of the photosynthetic apparatus as revealed by (i) a decrease in CO(2) assimilation, transpiration, and a significant increase in intercellular CO(2) concentration; (ii) a strong drop in both the maximum fluorescence yield and the effective Photosystem II quantum yield; and (iii) a reduction of total chlorophyll but a stable carotenoid content. On symptomatic canes, all these variables were affected more on leaves with symptoms than without symptoms, suggesting a gradation in photosynthesis disruptions in the plant according to the degree of symptom severity. In addition, canes of symptomatic plants had reduced carbohydrate reserves during the winter rest, whether they exhibit symptoms or not. The following year, the lower pool of reserves may contribute to a significant decrease in plant development, as well as a global loss in plant vigor.
