Abstract
Background Depression and treatment with antidepressants SSRI/SNRI are common in people with morbid obesity who are candidates for bariatric surgery. There is few and inconsistent data about the postoperative plasma concentrations of SSRI/SNRI. The aims of our study were to provide comprehensive data about the postoperative bioavailability of SSRI/SNRI, and the clinical effects on depressive symptoms. Methods Prospective multicenter study including 63 patients with morbid obesity and therapy with fixed doses of SSRI/SNRI: participants filled the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) questionnaire, and plasma levels of SSRI/SNRI were measured by HPLC, preoperatively (T0), and 4 weeks (T1) and 6 months (T2) postoperatively. Results The plasma concentrations of SSRI/SNRI dropped significantly in the bariatric surgery group from T0 to T2 by 24.7% (95% confidence interval [CI], -36.8 to -16.6, p = 0.0027): from T0 to T1 by 10.5% (95% 17 CI, -22.7 to -2.3; p = 0.016), and from T1 to T2 by 12.8% (95% CI, -29.3 to 3.5, p = 0.123), respectively.There was no significant change in the BDI score during follow-up (-2.9, 95% CI, -7.4 to 1.0; p = 0.13).The clinical outcome with respect to SSRI/SNRI plasma concentrations, weight change, and change of BDI score were similar in the subgroups undergoing gastric bypass surgery and sleeve gastrectomy, respectively. In the conservative group the plasma concentrations of SSRI/SNRI remained unchanged throughout the 6 months follow-up (-14.7, 95% CI, -32.6 to 1.7; p = 0.076). Conclusion In patients undergoing bariatric surgery plasma concentrations of SSRI/SNRI decrease significantly by about 25% mainly during the first 4 weeks postoperatively with wide individual variation, but without correlation to the severity of depression or weight loss.

Abstract
SCOPE Research is limited on diet challenges to improve health. A short-term, vegan protein diet regimen nutritionally balanced in macronutrient composition compared to an omnivorous diet is hypothesized to improve metabolic measurements of blood sugar regulation, blood lipids, and amino acid metabolism. METHODS AND RESULTS This randomized, cross-over, controlled vegan versus animal diet challenge is conducted on 21 (11 female,10 male) healthy participants. Fasting plasma is measured during a 3 d diet intervention for clinical biochemistry and metabonomics. Intervention diet plans meet individual caloric needs. Meals are provided and supervised. Diet compliance is monitored. CONCLUSIONS The vegan diet lowers triglycerides, insulin and homeostatic model assessment (HOMA-IR), bile acids, elevated magnesium levels, and changed branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) metabolism (p < 0.05), potentiating insulin and blood sugar control after 48 h. Cholesterol control improves significantly in the vegan versus omnivorous diets. Plasma amino acid and magnesium concentrations positively correlate with dietary amino acids. Polyunsaturated fatty acids and dietary fiber inversely correlate with insulin, HOMA-IR, and triglycerides. Nutritional biochemistries, BCAAs, insulin, and HOMA-IR are impacted by sexual dimorphism. A health-promoting, BCAA-associated metabolic signature is produced from a short-term, healthy, controlled, vegan diet challenge when compared with a healthy, controlled, omnivorous diet.

Abstract
C nanotubes are synthesized by catalytic route on ceramic supports (Al2O3, MgO and CaO), usually utilized for polymer reinforcing/flame-retardancy, aiming at nanotube-based hybrid preparation. Chemical vapor deposition is carried out in i-C4H10+H2 atmosphere over 17 wt% Fe-catalysts upon different conditions. In order to clarify the influence of support material, calcination (450 degrees C or 750 degrees C) and reduction temperature (500 degrees C or 600 degrees C) of the catalysts, and synthesis temperature (600 degrees C or 700 degrees C), catalysts utilized and nanotubes obtained are systematically investigated by the use of several analysis techniques (electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, thermo-gravimetry and Raman spectroscopy). The results obtained show that, in the considered range of variation, support material is the most influential parameter. The most catalytically active alumina supports allow achieving higher yields, but involve larger metallic inclusions and lower crystalline quality. Remaining supports behave oppositely. The reasons for such differences are discussed in the light of the current assessments on the nanotube growth and the results obtained are compared with those available in literature for similar catalysts.

Abstract
The acidic oxidation with HNO3/H2SO4 mixtures is widely reported as an effective method to functionalize multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT). Although effective, a bad control of the oxidation conditions frequently cause serious modifications of carbon nanotube network, limiting further potential applications. Investigations about the effect of functionalization operating conditions on the morphological, chemical and chemical-physical properties of MWCNT can be useful for a proper setting of oxidation reactions of MWCNT according to their specific applications. In this work the effect of HNO3/H2SO4 ratio on the morphological and chemical-physical properties and on the degree of functionalization of MWCNT was investigated. Electron microscopy, thermogravimetric, X-ray diffraction, titration and water dispersion analyses clearly revealed that the increase of the amount of concentrated sulphuric acid in the HNO3/H2SO4 mixture lead to an increase of the amount of functional groups on the MWCNT surface but also to an increase of structural damage in terms of tube cutting and generation of additional defects in the graphitic network of pristine

Abstract
This work presents a novel cascade of chemical functionalization of multiwalled carbon nanotubes which allows the conjugation with differently substituted coumarins. Aim of the present work is to synthesize new materials able to rescue cells from the adverse effect of CNT particles since pristine CNTs are practically insoluble and tend to accumulate inside cells, organs and tissues. Moreover, it was reported that single walled CNTs particles show an adverse effect on keratinocytes through an oxidative mechanism, leading to NF-kB activation. The conjugation with coumarins, known superoxide anion scavengers, could switch the cytotoxicity of the new materials. The cascade functionalization of MWCNTs by sequential steps of carboxylation, acylation, amine modification and finally, coumarin conjugation have been performed and the synthesis and the chemical properties of several f-MWCNTs-coumarins have been exploited.

Abstract
Taguchi's robust design method is for the first time employed to optimize many aspects of the production of nanohybrids based on C nanotubes by iron-catalyzed chemical vapor deposition in i-C4H10 + H2 atmosphere. By analyzing the outcomes of the catalytic process in terms of selectivity, carbon yield, purity and crystalline arrangement of the hybrid-forming nanotubes, the influence is ranked of the following parameters: synthesis temperature (500-700 degrees C), support material (alumina, magnesia or sodium-exchanged montmorillonite), calcination- (450-750 degrees C) and reduction-(500-700 degrees C) temperatures of the 15 wt% Fe-catalyst. In the experiments initially performed for this purpose, the growth process had, on average, scarce selectivity (2 in a scale 1-5) and poor yield (130 wt%); carbonaceous deposits exhibited unsatisfactory graphitization degree (Raman D/G intensity ratio > 1.5) and contained large amounts of metal impurities (14 wt%) and amorphous carbon (5 wt%). The indications emerging from Taguchi approach to the process optimization are critically examined. The experimental conditions chosen for carrying out test experiments allow achieving excellent selectivity (5) or large yield (760 wt%), hybrids with well-graphitized nanotubes (D/G intensity ratio < 0.6), nearly free of metallic (0.3 wt%) or amorphous (0.4 wt%) inclusions, with consequent possibility of satisfying the different requisites that the specific application to be addressed may require.

Abstract
Background Vitamin D receptors have been mapped throughout the brain suggesting a role for vitamin D in psychosomatic disorders. Results from previous epidemiological studies on relation between vitamin D status and depression are equivocal. Also, limited information is available relating vitamin D status with depression in young adult US population. Methods Data from the third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey were used to assess association between serum vitamin D and depression in 7970 non-institutionalized US residents, aged 15-39 y. Assessment of depression was done using the Diagnostic Interview Schedule developed by the National Institute of Mental Health. After accounting for several confounding variables in multivariate logistic regression analysis, we estimated odds ratios (OR) for having depression in vitamin D deficient persons in comparison to vitamin D sufficient persons. Results Women, non-Hispanic blacks, persons living below poverty, persons who did not consume supplements, persons living in South and West regions and in urban areas, persons with higher BMI, and persons with current depression had higher prevalence of vitamin D deficiency compared to their counterparts. OR for having current depressive episodes in persons with serum vitamin D ≤ 50 nmol/L is significantly higher relative to those with serum vitamin D ≥ 75 nmol/L (OR = 1.85; P = 0.021). Conclusions In this large population based study, likelihood of having depression in persons with vitamin D deficiency is significantly higher compared to those with vitamin D sufficiency. Early diagnosis and intervention are paramount because coexistence of vitamin D deficiency and depression has serious negative consequences on health.

Abstract
The synthesis of C nanotubes by catalyzed chemical vapor deposition at 600 degrees C is investigated, using yield and purity degree of C deposits to monitor the reaction outcome. From the reaction, carried out in C4H10-H2-He environment over Al2O3 supported Fe catalysts, multi-walled C nanotubes are attained, which, after purification, are analyzed by routinely-used diagnostics techniques. In order to clarify the role of the growth parameters, various experiments are performed changing flow rates of reactive gases, as well as, amount, metal load and reduction temperature of Fe/Al2O3 catalysts in the ranges 15-90 cc/min, 0.25-2.00 g, 10-40 wt% and 500-700 degrees C, respectively. Correspondingly, carbon yield varies between 47 wt% and 913 wt%, while purity degree between 56 wt% and 93 wt%. Owing to the lack of any correlation between these changes, it is initially quite difficult to envisage the effect, produced by any change of the growth conditions, on the final reaction outcome. The problem is solved by applying a semi-empirical approach, through which the "original" growth variables are combined to give dimensionless arguments (scaling laws for the reaction parameters), able to account for all the variation of yield and purity in the ranges considered. As final result, the growth issue can be easily predicted because carbon yield and purity degree can be approximated through very simple functions of the "new" process variables.

Abstract
Catalytic activity of iron based catalysts in the production of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) has been investigated. The effect of the carbon source (ethane or isobutane), catalyst support (Al2O3 or SiO2), iron loading, catalyst reduction temperature and reaction temperature on yield and quality of carbon products has been examined. The structural and morphological properties of catalyst and carbon products obtained have been analyzed by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), Raman spectroscopy (RS), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and X-ray powder diffraction (XRD). The iron-based catalysts supported on alumina seem to be efficient systems for the production of carbon nanotubes from chemical vapor deposition (CVD) of isobutane with very interesting yields. The opportune calibration of reaction parameters, such as iron loading and reaction temperature, can in fact drive the synthesis toward the formation of high quality CNTs.
