Abstract
We present the first joint analysis of cluster abundances and auto or cross-correlations of three cosmic tracer fields: galaxy density, weak gravitational lensing shear, and cluster density split by optical richness. From a joint analysis (4×2pt+N) of cluster abundances, three cluster cross-correlations, and the auto correlations of the galaxy density measured from the first year data of the Dark Energy Survey, we obtain Ω_{m}=0.305_{-0.038}^{+0.055} and σ_{8}=0.783_{-0.054}^{+0.064}. This result is consistent with constraints from the DES-Y1 galaxy clustering and weak lensing two-point correlation functions for the flat νΛCDM model. Consequently, we combine cluster abundances and all two-point correlations from across all three cosmic tracer fields (6×2pt+N) and find improved constraints on cosmological parameters as well as on the cluster observable-mass scaling relation. This analysis is an important advance in both optical cluster cosmology and multiprobe analyses of upcoming wide imaging surveys.

Abstract
We perform a comprehensive study of Milky Way (MW) satellite galaxies to constrain the fundamental properties of dark matter (DM). This analysis fully incorporates inhomogeneities in the spatial distribution and detectability of MW satellites and marginalizes over uncertainties in the mapping between galaxies and DM halos, the properties of the MW system, and the disruption of subhalos by the MW disk. Our results are consistent with the cold, collisionless DM paradigm and yield the strongest cosmological constraints to date on particle models of warm, interacting, and fuzzy dark matter. At 95% confidence, we report limits on (i) the mass of thermal relic warm DM, m_{WDM}>6.5 keV (free-streaming length, λ_{fs}≲10h^{-1} kpc), (ii) the velocity-independent DM-proton scattering cross section, σ_{0}<8.8×10^{-29} cm^{2} for a 100 MeV DM particle mass [DM-proton coupling, c_{p}≲(0.3 GeV)^{-2}], and (iii) the mass of fuzzy DM, m_{ϕ}>2.9×10^{-21} eV (de Broglie wavelength, λ_{dB}≲0.5 kpc). These constraints are complementary to other observational and laboratory constraints on DM properties.

Abstract
The 2017 Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) observations of the central source in M87 have led to the first measurement of the size of a black-hole shadow. This observation offers a new and clean gravitational test of the black-hole metric in the strong-field regime. We show analytically that spacetimes that deviate from the Kerr metric but satisfy weak-field tests can lead to large deviations in the predicted black-hole shadows that are inconsistent with even the current EHT measurements. We use numerical calculations of regular, parametric, non-Kerr metrics to identify the common characteristic among these different parametrizations that control the predicted shadow size. We show that the shadow-size measurements place significant constraints on deviation parameters that control the second post-Newtonian and higher orders of each metric and are, therefore, inaccessible to weak-field tests. The new constraints are complementary to those imposed by observations of gravitational waves from stellar-mass sources.

Abstract
In recent years, many γ-ray sources have been identified, yet the unresolved component hosts valuable information on the faintest emission. In order to extract it, a cross-correlation with gravitational tracers of matter in the Universe has been shown to be a promising tool. We report here the first identification of a cross-correlation signal between γ rays and the distribution of mass in the Universe probed by weak gravitational lensing. We use data from the Dark Energy Survey Y1 weak lensing data and the Fermi Large Area Telescope 9-yr γ-ray data, obtaining a signal-to-noise ratio of 5.3. The signal is mostly localized at small angular scales and high γ-ray energies, with a hint of correlation at extended separation. Blazar emission is likely the origin of the small-scale effect. We investigate implications of the large-scale component in terms of astrophysical sources and particle dark matter emission.

Abstract
The combination of multiple observational probes has long been advocated as a powerful technique to constrain cosmological parameters, in particular dark energy. The Dark Energy Survey has measured 207 spectroscopically confirmed type Ia supernova light curves, the baryon acoustic oscillation feature, weak gravitational lensing, and galaxy clustering. Here we present combined results from these probes, deriving constraints on the equation of state, w, of dark energy and its energy density in the Universe. Independently of other experiments, such as those that measure the cosmic microwave background, the probes from this single photometric survey rule out a Universe with no dark energy, finding w=-0.80_{-0.11}^{+0.09}. The geometry is shown to be consistent with a spatially flat Universe, and we obtain a constraint on the baryon density of Ω_{b}=0.069_{-0.012}^{+0.009} that is independent of early Universe measurements. These results demonstrate the potential power of large multiprobe photometric surveys and pave the way for order of magnitude advances in our constraints on properties of dark energy and cosmology over the next decade.

Abstract
We present near infrared high-precision photometry for eight transiting hot Jupiters observed during their predicted secondary eclipses. Our observations were carried out using the staring mode of the WIRCam instrument on the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (CFHT). We present the observing strategies and data reduction methods which delivered time series photometry with statistical photometric precision as low as 0.11%. We performed a Bayesian analysis to model the eclipse parameters and systematics simultaneously. The measured planet-to-star flux ratios allowed us to constrain the thermal emission from the day side of these hot Jupiters, as we derived the planet brightness temperatures. Our results combined with previously observed eclipses reveal an excess in the brightness temperatures relative to the blackbody prediction for the equilibrium temperatures of the planets for a wide range of heat redistribution factors. We find a trend that this excess appears to be larger for planets with lower equilibrium temperatures. This may imply some additional sources of radiation, such as reflected light from the host star and/or thermal emission from residual internal heat from the formation of the planet.

Abstract
In seabirds, equal bi-parental care is the rule, as it is considered crucial for raising chicks successfully because seabirds forage in an environment with unpredictable and highly variable food supply. Frigatebirds forage in poor tropical waters, yet males reduce and even stop parental care soon after chick brooding, leaving the female to provision the chick alone for an extended fledging period. Using bird-borne tracking devices, male and female Christmas Island Frigatebirds (Fregata andrewsi) were investigated during the brooding, late chick rearing and post-fledging period to examine whether sexes exhibit foraging strategies that may be linked to differential breeding investments. During brooding, males and females showed similar foraging behaviour under average marine productivity of oceanic waters close to the colony, but males shifted to more distant and more productive habitats when conditions deteriorated to continue with reduced chick provisioning. During the late chick rearing period, females progressively increased their foraging range to the more distant but productive marine areas that only males had visited during brooding. Birds spent the non-breeding period roosting in highly productive waters of the Sunda Shelf. The sex-specific utilisation of three different foraging habitats with different primary productivity (oceanic, coastal, and shelf areas) allowed for temporal and spatial segregation in the exploitation of favourable habitats which seems to enable each sex to optimise its foraging profitability. In addition, post-fledging foraging movements of females suggest a biennial breeding cycle, while limited information on males suggests the possibility of an annual breeding cycle.

Abstract
Many insect and fungal pathogens posing agronomically important threats specifically target the roots in strawberry. The use of a root-specific promoter to confer expression of resistance genes in a targeted manner has the potential appreciably to benefit the genetic improvement of commercial strawberry varieties. A novel gene, FaRB7, was isolated from strawberry (Fragariaxananassa Duch.) and found to contain motifs characteristic of tonoplast intrinsic proteins (TIPs). Phylogenetic analysis revealed that FaRB7 represents an RB7-type TIP. In strawberry, this gene is expressed predominantly in roots, with very low expression in petioles. A 2.843 kb region representing the FaRB7 gene upstream regulatory sequence was isolated and found to share a number of sequence motifs with the promoter of the Nicotiana tabacum TobRB7 root-specific RB7-type TIP. When cloned upstream of the gusA reporter gene and introduced into strawberry plants, the FaRB7 promoter was shown to direct strong, near root-specific expression with expression patterns very similar to that of the endogenous gene. Furthermore, the FaRB7 promoter was found to confer constitutive expression, comparable to that produced by the cauliflower mosaic virus (CaMV) 35S RNA promoter, in tobacco. Thus, the FaRB7 promoter may be used to achieve near-root-specific transgene expression in strawberry and also represents an alternative to the CaMV 35S promoter for producing constitutive foreign gene expression in heterologous hosts. The FaRB7 full-length genomic sequence and 5' upstream regulatory region have been submitted to the EMBL/GenBank database under accession number DQ178022.

Abstract
AIMS/HYPOTHESIS Insulin-stimulated glucose transport is impaired in a genetic model of hypertension, the stroke-prone spontaneously hypertensive rat (SHRSP), yet the molecular mechanisms that underlie this defect in the animals remain unclear. METHODS We examined the effects of insulin on the trafficking of the insulin-responsive glucose transporter GLUT4 to the plasma membrane in isolated adipocytes from SHRSP and normotensive control Wistar-Kyoto (WKY) rats. RESULTS Treatment of isolated adipocytes with insulin resulted in trafficking of GLUT4 to the plasma membrane. There was no significant difference in the magnitude of insulin-stimulated GLUT4 trafficking from intracellular membranes to the plasma membrane between strains. In contrast, we demonstrated that there is a significant reduction in GLUT4 accessible to the glucose photolabel Bio-LC-ATB-BGPA at the plasma membrane of SHRSP adipocytes compared with control rats. CONCLUSIONS/INTERPRETATION We propose that a large proportion of GLUT4 translocated to the plasma membrane in response to insulin is not able to bind substrate and catalyse transport in the SHRSP. Therefore, there is a reduction in bioavailable GLUT4 in SHRSP animals that is likely to account, at least in part, for the reduced insulin-stimulated glucose uptake.

Abstract
The availability of short stature apple scions that required minimal applications of chemical growth retardants and could be used with a range of rootstocks would be of considerable benefit to fruit growers. We have suppressed the expression of a gene encoding the gibberellin (GA) biosynthetic enzyme GA 20-oxidase to reduce the levels of bioactive GAs in a scion variety, resulting in significant reductions in stem height. Application of GA3 reversed the effect. The scion remained dwarfed after grafting on to normally invigorating rootstocks, whilst control plants of the same cultivar displayed the expected vigour when grafted on to these rootstocks. This approach could be applicable to any perennial crop variety, allowing dwarf trees to be obtained on any available rootstock or on their own roots without the need for chemical growth retardant application. In effect, seedlings that are well suited to local conditions (drought, salinity) could be employed as tree rootstocks, as could existing rootstocks valued for characters other than vigour control, such as pest and disease resistance.

Abstract
The role of ethylene in regulating sugar, acid, texture and volatile components of fruit quality was investigated in transgenic apple fruit modified in their capacity to synthesize endogenous ethylene. Fruit obtained from plants silenced for either ACS (ACC synthase; ACC-1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid) or ACO (ACC oxidase), key enzymes responsible for ethylene biosynthesis, expectedly showed reduced autocatalytic ethylene production. Ethylene suppressed fruits were significantly firmer than controls and displayed an increased shelf-life. No significant difference was observed in sugar or acid accumulation suggesting that sugar and acid composition and accumulation is not directly under ethylene control. Interestingly, a significant and dramatic suppression of the synthesis of volatile esters was observed in fruit silenced for ethylene. However, no significant suppression was observed for the aldehyde and alcohol precursors of these esters. Our results indicate that ethylene differentially regulates fruit quality components and the availability of these transgenic apple trees provides a unique resource to define the role of ethylene and other factors that regulate fruit development.

Abstract
The ability of the heterologous promoters, rolCP and CoYMVP, to drive expression of the gusA reporter gene in the vegetative tissues of apple (Malus pumila Mill.) has been studied using transgenic plants produced by Agrobacterium-mediated transformation. Replicate plants of each transgenic clone were propagated in soil to a uniform size and samples of leaf, petiole, stem, and root were taken for the measurement of beta-glucuronidase (GUS) activity by fluorometric assay. The levels of expression were compared with those in tissues of a representative clone containing the CaMV 35S promoter. These quantitative GUS data were related to the copy number of transgene loci assessed by Southern blotting. The CoYMV promoter was slightly more active than the rolC promoter, although both expressed gusA at a lower level than the CaMV 35S promoter. In clones containing the rolC promoter with multiple transgene loci, expression values were generally among the highest or lowest in the range. The precise location of GUS activity in each tissue was identified by staining of whole leaves and tissue sections with a chromogenic substrate. This analysis demonstrated that with both the rolC and CoYMV promoters the reporter gene activity was primarily localised to vascular tissues, particularly the phloem. Our results indicate that both promoters would be suitable to drive the expression of transgenes to combat pests and diseases of apple that are dependent on interaction with the phloem.

Abstract
The parameters for optimal regeneration of seven commercial strawberry cultivars were tested using a range of explants and culture conditions. Efficient levels of regeneration--those needed to carry out transformation experiments--with the cultivars Calypso, Pegasus, Bolero, Tango and Emily were achieved with leaf discs, petioles, roots and stipules. Regeneration from cv. Elsanta proved to be difficult from all explant material, although unpollinated ovaries proved to be a promising explant source, with 12% of the explants regenerating shoots. In cv. Eros, regeneration occurred only from root tissue. A comparison of the genetic background suggests that there is a strong genetic component amongst the different cultivars determining their regeneration capacity. The development of these regeneration systems provides a means to use almost the whole stock plant for the efficient genetic transformation of commercial strawberry varieties.

Abstract
Cerebral (brain) arteriovenous malformations (BAVMs) are a tangle of disorganized vessels that are a rare cause of hemorrhagic stroke in the general population. Although clinical presentation of hemorrhage may be related to the structure of BAVM vessels, there has been no systematic quantitative analysis of BAVM vessel morphology. Histological sections of excised BAVM lesions were prepared from patients who presented with hemorrhage (n = 14) and from patients with no history of hemorrhage (n = 22). Mean values of radius and wall thickness in each section were determined. BAVM radii were 422+/-136 microm (mean +/- SD), minimum wall thickness (thinnest portion of the wall) was 54+/-14 microm; and the minimum thickness/radius ratio was 0.23+/-0.07. Greater vessel wall thickness was associated with hemorrhagic presentation (OR= 1.1; p = 0.046) after adjusting for feeding artery pressure. Because BAVM vessels from patients presenting with hemorrhage had thicker vessel walls, the search for structural properties predisposing BAVM rupture should be expanded beyond the morphological properties analyzed here.

Abstract
An endo-beta-1,4-glucanase (EG) was purified from ripe strawberry (Fragaria x ananassa Duch.) fruit using cellulose affinity chromatography. The purified enzyme gave a single protein band of 54 kDa on sodium dodecyl sulphate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. The N-terminal amino acid sequence of this protein showed strong homology with the proteins encoded by recently identified EG genes from different strawberry cultivars and from Arabidopsis, pepper and tomato. The enzyme specifically cleaved the beta-1,4-glucosyl linkages of xyloglucan but was unable to hydrolyze those of insoluble cellulose. The pH optimum and Km of the enzyme against the artificial substrate carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) were pH 5.0-7.0 and 1.3 mg ml-1, respectively. To assess the role of the Cell enzyme in fruit softening a cDNA of the corresponding fruit-specific and ripening-enhanced strawberry gene, cell, was used to down-regulate cell gene expression in transgenic strawberry plants. In several primary transformants, cell mRNA was strongly suppressed in ripe fruit. However, the EG activity and firmness of these fruit were indistinguishable from those of control fruit. The expression of a second gene, cel2, encoding a different strawberry EG was unaltered in the fruits of these transformants. The presence of the cel2 transcript in transgenic plants may have prevented the specific down-regulation of cell from revealing its role in fruit softening.

Abstract
Insulin resistance is of major pathogenic importance in several common human disorders, but the underlying mechanisms are unknown. The stroke-prone spontaneously hypertensive (SHRSP) rat is a model of human insulin resistance and is characterized by reduced insulin-mediated glucose disposal and defective fatty acid metabolism in isolated adipocytes (Collison et al. [Diabetes 49:2222-2226, 2000]). In this study, we have examined skeletal muscle and cultured skeletal muscle myoblasts for defects in insulin action in the male SHRSP rat model compared with the normotensive, insulin-sensitive control strain, Wistar-Kyoto (WKY). We show that skeletal muscle from SHRSP animals exhibits a marked decrease in insulin-stimulated glucose transport compared with WKY animals (fold increase in response to insulin: 1.4 +/- 0.15 in SHRSP, 2.29 +/- 0.22 in WKY; n = 4, P = 0.02), but the stimulation of glucose transport in response to activation of AMP-activated protein kinase was similar between the two strains. Similar reductions in insulin-stimulated glucose transport were also evident in myoblast cultures from SHRSP compared with WKY cultures. These differences were not accounted for by a reduction in cellular GLUT4 content. Moreover, analysis of the levels and subcellular distribution of insulin receptor substrates 1 and 2, the p85alpha subunit of phosphatidylinositol 3'-kinase, and protein kinase B (PKB)/cAKT in skeletal muscle did not identify any differences between the two strains; the insulin-dependent activation of PKB/cAKT was not different between the two strains. However, the total cellular levels of caveolin and flotillin, proteins implicated in insulin signal transduction/compartmentalization, were markedly elevated in skeletal muscles from SHRSP compared with WKY animals. Increased cellular levels of the soluble N-ethylmaleimide attachment protein receptor (SNARE) proteins syntaxin 4 and vesicle-associated membrane protein (VAMP)-2 were also observed in the insulin-resistant SHRSP strain. Taken together, these data suggest that the insulin resistance observed in the SHRSP is manifest at the level of skeletal muscle, that muscle cell glucose transport exhibits a blunted response to insulin but unchanged responses to activation of AMP-activated protein kinase, that alterations in key molecules in both GLUT4 trafficking and insulin signal compartmentalization may underlie these defects in insulin action, and that the insulin resistance of these muscles appears to be of genetic origin rather than a paracrine or autocrine effect, since the insulin resistance is also observed in cultured myoblasts over several passages.

Abstract
This study assessed the feasibility of augmenting cerebral blood flow (CBF) and decreasing hemispheric cerebrovascular resistance (CVR) by intracarotid papaverine during acute cerebral hypotension. Awake patients (n = 10) undergoing transfemoral balloon occlusion of an internal carotid artery (ICA) with nitroprusside (SNP)-induced systemic hypotension (10% reduction of mean arterial pressure) were studied. We measured mean femoral artery pressure (MAP), mean distal ICA pressure (P(ica)), and CBF (intracarotid 133Xe) at two time points: before and after intracarotid papaverine infusion (1 or 7 mg/min). Two patients became symptomatic immediately after ICA occlusion and were excluded. One patient developed a focal seizure during papaverine infusion. In another, the occlusion balloon deflated prematurely. Of the remaining six patients, two of the three patients who received high-dose papaverine (7 mg/min) developed transient obtundation. The remaining three patients, who received low-dose papaverine (1 mg/min), did not develop any neurologic symptoms. There was a trend for intracarotid papaverine to increase hemispheric CBF by 36% (33 +/- 10 versus 45 +/- 22 ml x 100 g(-1) x min(-1), P = .084, n = 6); papaverine decreased CVR from 1.3 +/- 0.4 to 1.0 +/- 0.3 mm Hg x ml(-1) x 100 g(-1) x min(-1) (P = .049). There was no significant change in heart rate, MAP, or P(ica) during experimental protocol. Manipulation of CVR by intracarotid papaverine during acute hemispheric arterial hypotension appears to be feasible. Further studies are needed to establish safety and efficacy.

Abstract
Purification of high-quality RNA from different strawberry tissues is often affected by the presence of high levels of contamination by polysaccharides and phenolic compounds. With the protocol detailed here we describe for the first time total RNA purification from petiole tissue. Treating the plants used as source of material with short-daylight regime prior the extraction we are able to obtain RNA suitable for further applications such as in vitro translation, RT-PCR, and RNA blot analysis. The yield of total RNA extraction is significantly enhanced when tissue from plants grown under short-day photoperiodic condition is used compared with that taken from plants grown under long day photoperiod.

Abstract
It is desirable that the expression of transgenes in genetically modified crops is restricted to the tissues requiring the encoded activity. To this end, we have studied the ability of the heterologous ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (Rubisco) small-subunit (SSU) gene promoters, RBCS3CP (0.8 kbp) from tomato (hycopersion esculentum Mill.) and SRS1P (1.5 kbp) from soybean (Glycine max [h.] Mers.), to drive expression of the beta-glucuronidase (gusA) marker gene in apple (Malus pumila Mill.). Transgenic lines of cultivar Greensleeves were produced by Agrobacterium-mediated transformation and the level of gusA expression in the vegetative tissues of young plants was compared with that produced using the cauliflower mosaic virus (CaMV) 35S promoter. These quantitative GUS data were assessed for their relationship to the copy number of transgene loci. The precise location of GUS activity in leaves was identified histochemically. The heterologous SSU promoters were active primarily in the green vegetative tissues of apple, although activity in the roots was noticeably higher with the RBCS3C promoter than with the SRS1 promoter. The mean GUS activity in leaf tissue of the SSU promoter transgenics was approximately half that of plants containing the CaMV 35S promoter. Histochemical analysis demonstrated that GUS activity was localised to the mesophyll and palisade cells of the leaf. The influence of light on expression was also determined. The activity of the SRS1 promoter was strictly dependent on light, whereas that of the RBCS3C promoter appeared not to be. Both SSU promoters would be suitable for the expression of transgenes in green photosynthetic tissues of apple.

Abstract
An in vitro study was carried out to determine the presence of free infectious CMV in the supernatant of donated units of blood and platelets which were known to be CMV seropositive. One sample was taken from each of 10 units of CMV-seropositive platelet donations which were 4 days old. Ten units of seropositive blood were sampled at intervals over their storage lifespan. Each sample was divided into two and thrombin was added to one of them. The samples were all prepared by centrifugation. The resulting supernatant from the clotted samples was used in in vitro culture studies using the MRC-5 cell line to ascertain the infectivity of the samples. The anticoagulated supernatants were subjected to PCR analysis to detect the presence of free genomic CMV DNA. All of the units of blood and platelets tested positive for the presence of genomic CMV DNA by PCR. Seven out of the 10 units of blood were culture positive from samples taken 3-4 weeks into their shelf-life. None of the platelet samples was culture positive. The cultures of supernatants taken from seropositive blood were negative when the units were fresh, but further into their storage life, the cultures became positive, indicating that infectious material was released into the supernatant during storage, presumably due to the breakdown of intact white cells.

Abstract
The effects of the plant signal molecule acetosyringone (AS) and the osmoprotectant betaine phosphate (BP) have been examined for their ability to increase the transformation efficiency of Agrobacterium tumefaciens (At), C58C1::pGV3850 harboring the binary vector pKIWI105. This binary plasmid encodes the β-glucuronidase (GUS) gene and was previously shown to be expressed exclusively in plant tissues. Bacteria were grown in one of two previously reported virulence induction media (MS20 and SIM) for 5h and GUS activity was measured fluorimetrically in individual 6 week old leaf discs as a quantitative measure of stable transformation events. Bacteria induced in MS20 supplemented with AS (0.1 mM) and BP (1 mM) showed a significant increase in GUS activity as compared to media containing AS or BP added singly or control media lacking the supplements. The effects of another osmoprotectant proline (1 mM) could replace the beneficial effects of betaine. No significant difference was observed among treatments with respect to the two induction media.

Abstract
STUDY OBJECTIVE To determine whether a low dose of droperidol is as effective as a high dose in preventing vomiting after pediatric strabismus surgery. DESIGN Randomized, double-blind study. SETTING Operating room and recovery room at a university medical center. PATIENTS One hundred children undergoing strabismus procedures. INTERVENTIONS Patients were divided randomly into three groups and received either droperidol 75 microgram/kg, droperidol 20 microgram/kg, or saline. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS Vomiting was assessed in all groups, as was time to discharge and ability to perform a satisfactory postoperative eye examination. Children who received droperidol vomited less frequently than those who did not (p = 0.0521). There was no difference in the frequency of vomiting between the two groups that received droperidol. CONCLUSION Droperidol 20 microgram/kg is as effective as droperidol 75 microgram/kg in preventing vomiting after pediatric strabismus surgery. Because higher doses of droperidol may sedate some patients, the lowest effective dose should be used. In this study, however, there was no statistically significant difference with regard to length of recovery room stay.

Abstract
The disamed Ti-binary vector pBIN 6 in Agrobacterium tumefaciens has been used in leaf disc transfomations to produce transgenic apple (Malus pumila Mill.) plants with a nomal phenotype except for a somewhat reduced capacity to root. The presence of the genes for nopaline synthase and neomycin phosphotrans ferase (conferring kanamycin resistance), inserted into the host genome by the vector, was confirmed by Southern blot analysis, the detection of nopaline synthase activity and rooting in the presence of the antibiotic.The nopaline synthase gene continued to be expressed in glasshouse-grown plants several months after removal from in vitro growth conditions.

Abstract
Groups of male C57Bl and CD-1 mice were exposed to benzene via inhalation using two different exposure protocols. One protocol consisted of repetitive week-long exposures to 300 ppm benzene (6 h/d x 5 d/wk) interrupted by 2 weeks of non-exposure. The exposure pattern (1 week of exposure followed by 2 weeks of non-exposure) was continued until the death of the last exposed animal. The second protocol consisted of exposures to 1200 ppm benzene (6 h/d x 5 d/wk) for 10 weeks. Exposures were then terminated and the animals allowed to live out their lives. For each protocol, appropriate age-matched control mice received comparable exposures to filtered, conditioned air. The discontinuous exposure patterns mimic the patterns of exposure often encountered in the workplace and, in addition, prolong the survival of exposed animals so as to maximize potential tumorigenic responses. Both exposure protocols were markedly hematotoxic to both mouse strains as measured by peripheral blood counts. Both strains of mice responded to the intermittent 300 ppm benzene exposures with elevated incidences of malignant tumors. Particularly noteworthy was a 35% incidence of zymbal gland tumors in the C57Bl mice. In contrast, only the CD-1 mice responded to the 1200 ppm benzene exposures delivered over 10 weeks with elevated tumor incidences. A 46% incidence of lung adenoma was particularly striking in these mice. Neither of the benzene exposure protocols induced elevated incidences of leukemia/lymphoma in either strain.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Abstract
Respiratory functions were measured on a daily basis by spirometry over a period of 4 wk at a summer camp at Fairview Lake in northwestern New Jersey. Fifty-three boys and 38 girls 8 to 15 yr of age participated in the study on at least 7 days; 37 children were in residence for 4 wk, 34 for the first 2 wk only; and 20 for the last 2 wk. There were 72 whites, 15 blacks, 3 Asians, and 1 Hispanic in the study group. Multiple regression analyses indicated that the O3 concentration in the previous hour, the cumulative daily O3 exposure during the hours between 9 A.M. and the function measurement, ambient temperature, and humidity were the most explanatory environmental variables for daily variations in function, with the 1 - h O3 concentration having the strongest influence. Linear regressions were performed for each child between O3 concentration and function, and all average slopes were significantly negative (p less than 0.05) for FVC, FEV1, PEFR, and FEF25-75 for all children, and for boys and girls separately. Comparable results were obtained in data subsets (i.e., children studied during the first or second 2 wk only, and for data sets truncated at O3 less than 80 and O3 less than 60 ppb). The average regression slopes (+/- SE) for FVC and FEV1, respectively, were -1.03 +/- 0.24 and -1.42 +/- 0.17 ml/ppb, whereas for PEFR and FEF25-75 they were -6.78 +/- 0.73 and -2.48 +/- 0.26 ml/s/ppb.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Abstract
The cytological effects of pollen γ-irradiation at 50 and 100 krad on both embryo and endosperm development were studied in Malus × domestica. Fruit and seed set were reduced by increasing doses of pollen irradiation, while embryo sacs resulting from the treatments differed in number and morphology of endosperm nuclei and in the presence or absence of an embryo. Nuclear abnormalities, distinguished from normal nuclear behaviour in embryo sacs derived from unirradiated pollen, included enhanced numbers of polyploid restitution nuclei, bridges between nuclei, excluded metaphase chromosome fragments and disrupted mitotic synchrony. Generally, a high dose of pollen irradiation (100 krad) generated an all-or-nothing response in the embryo sac, either creating highly abnormal embryos and/or endosperms which aborted, or showing relatively normal development. Callus produced from excised cellular endosperm differed in average genome size, that derived from 100 krad pollen being smaller than that from unirradiated pollen.

Abstract
An in vitro regeneration technique using root callus has been combined with colchicine application to produce hexaploid plants from the sterile triploid cherry rootstock Colt. Colchicine (50 mg/l) was applied together with auxin (IBA) (3 mg/l) either before or after root primordium formation in single excised micropropagating shoots. In both cases shoots were regenerated in vitro from the putative hexaploid roots. Both methods produced hexaploid plants but more than 70% of the regenerated clones were still triploid. The hexaploid plants were distinguishable from the triploids on morphological as well as cytogenetic grounds. Quantitative characters such as leaf length/breadth ratio, stomatal length and density in the hexaploids were significantly different from both regenerated and non-regenerated triploids.

Abstract
Immature apple seeds from four scion cultivars, Bramley, Cox, Greensleeves and Spartan, and four rootstocks, M.9, M.25, M.26 and M.27 (Malus púmila Mill.), were collected at 30 and 50 days post-anthesis, dissected into nucellus, endosperm and zygotic embryo and cultured in vitro. The basal media of Linsmaier and Skoog (LS) and Murashige and Tucker (MT) were compared with hormone-containing media for their effects on adventitious embryogenesis, nucellus and endosperm callus formation and zygotic embryo development. Nucellar tissues from 30-day-old seeds formed callus only in the presence of an auxin, 2,4-D or NAA, and a cytokinin, BA. Concentrations of 4.4 × 10(-6)M and 2.2 × 10(-5) M were effective. Adventitious embryos arose from the micropylar ends of the nucellus or endosperm in 50-day-old seeds at a frequency of 0-23 % depending on the cultivar. The number of adventitious embryos varied from 1 to 9 per seed. Generally the inclusion of growth regulators had no beneficial effects and the inclusion of malt extract at 500 mg · l(-1) to the basal media was inhibitory. Embryos could be induced to undergo shoot proliferation for subsequent plantlet production. Endosperm callus growth was obtained on both basal and hormone-supplemented media in excised 50-day-old seeds. The frequency of callus formation was cultivar and media dependent and ranged from 0-80%. Growth on LS media was prolific and the hormone-autotrophic nature of this callus has persisted after more than a year in culture. Excised zygotic embryos from 50-day-old seeds could be stimulated to produce multiple shoots from single embryo shoot apices on media containing 4.4 × 10(-6)M and 2.2 × 10(-5) M BA. This effect was reduced by the inclusion of 500 mg·1(-1) casein hydrolysate. Secondary adventitious embryogenesis could also be induced on the cotyledon surface of both adventitious and zygotic embryos at specific combinations of NAA and BA. On basal media zygotic embryos developed into seedlings in vitro and the addition of GA3 sometimes enhanced the process.

A line-tunable CO(2) laser system is described producing repeatable pulses with selectable widths from 2 to 60 nsec. High energy contrast ratio (minimum of 10) is achieved in both the P and R branches of the 9- and 10-microm bands making this system a valuable source for photochemical studies.

Abstract
The gas consumption characteristics of a recirculating HF TE-laser have been defined. The stoichiometry varies from close to H(2):SF(6):1:1 at low H(2) concentration to 3:1 above 30% H(2). The output energy shows a broad maximum in its dependence on pressure and H(2) concentration and, as a result fairly stable output can be maintained with recirculation using only a simple make-up control system.
