Abstract
PURPOSE OF THE REVIEW This narrative review will emphasize the necessity for more female enrollment in heart failure (HF) trials and proposes future investigations regarding optimal dosages. Ultimately, a deeper understanding of the unique pathophysiology and medication responses in both men and women is crucial for effective HF management and may improve the quality of life in women. RECENT FINDINGS An analysis of 740 cardiovascular studies reveals that women make up only 38.2% of participants on average. Regarding to trials testing the effectiveness of HF medications, women's involvement are as low as 23.1%. While current guidelines lack sex-specific treatment recommendations, emerging research suggests differential medication dosages could be beneficial. Studies indicate that women may achieve comparable outcomes with lower doses of certain medications (angiotensin-receptor blockers) compared to men, signaling potential for more tailored dosing approaches. We advocate that the next step in HF research should prioritize the importance of tailoring treatment for HF patients by taking into account the variations in drug absorption and distribution among women.

Development of Postanesthesia Care Unit Delirium Is Associated with Differences in Aperiodic and Periodic Alpha Parameters of the Electroencephalogram during Emergence from General Anesthesia: Results from a Prospective Observational Cohort Study. Abstract
BACKGROUND Intraoperative alpha-band power in frontal electrodes may provide helpful information about the balance of hypnosis and analgesia and has been associated with reduced occurrence of delirium in the postanesthesia care unit. Recent studies suggest that narrow-band power computations from neural power spectra can benefit from separating periodic and aperiodic components of the electroencephalogram. This study investigates whether such techniques are more useful in separating patients with and without delirium in the postanesthesia care unit at the group level as opposed to conventional power spectra. METHODS Intraoperative electroencephalography recordings of 32 patients who developed perioperative neurocognitive disorders and 137 patients who did not were considered in this post hoc secondary analysis. The power spectra were calculated using conventional methods and the "fitting oscillations and one over f" algorithm was applied to separate aperiodic and periodic components to see whether the electroencephalography signature is different between groups. RESULTS At the group level, patients who did not develop perioperative neurocognitive disorders presented with significantly higher alpha-band power and a broadband increase in power, allowing a "fair" separation based on conventional power spectra. Within the first third of emergence, the difference in median absolute alpha-band power amounted to 8.53 decibels (area under the receiver operator characteristics curve, 0.74 [0.65; 0.82]), reaching its highest value. In relative terms, the best separation was achieved in the second third of emergence, with a difference in medians of 7.71% (area under the receiver operator characteristics curve, 0.70 [0.61; 0.79]). The area under the receiver operator characteristics curve values were generally lower toward the end of emergence with increasing arousal. CONCLUSIONS Increased alpha-band power during emergence in patients who did not develop perioperative neurocognitive disorders can be traced back to an increase in oscillatory alpha activity and an overall increase in aperiodic broadband power. Although the differences between patients with and without perioperative neurocognitive disorders can be detected relying on traditional methods, the separation of the signal allows a more detailed analysis. This may enable clinicians to detect patients at risk for developing perioperative neurocognitive disorders in the postanesthesia care unit early in the emergence phase. EDITOR’S PERSPECTIVE

Abstract
Quercetin (QUE) belonging to the flavonoid class is a common phytochemical present in the daily diet of some individuals. Quercetin is an important source of free radical scavengers. This property makes this flavonoid a reliable antioxidant with the following properties: anti-inflammatory, anti-diabetic, antimicrobial and anti-carcinogenic. Sodium butyrate (NaBu) acts as a histone deacetylase inhibitor (HDACi) and is known to regulate apoptosis in cancer cells. Combining natural flavonoids such as QUE with different substances may synergistically enhance their anti-carcinogenic capacity. Thus, the aim of this study was to examine the combined treatment effects of QUE and NaBu in hormone-sensitive breast cancer cells in vitro. MCF-7 breast cancer cells were treated with QUE alone, NaBu alone, as well as QUE and NaBu combined to determine the following: cell proliferation, levels of protein annexin A5 (ANXA5) and reactive oxygen species (ROS), mRNA protein expression, as well as cell and nuclear morphology. Data demonstrated that either QUE or NaBu alone inhibited cell proliferation, and reduced levels protein ANXA5, ROS and mRNA protein expression, The combination of QUE and NaBu produced a significant synergistic inhibitory effect compared to treatment groups of QUE or NaBu alone. In conclusion, our findings showed that the combination treatment of QUE and NaBu may constitute a promising therapeutic approach to breast cancer treatment but this needs further molecular and in vivo investigations.

Abstract
Although aluminum is a ubiquitous metal in the ecosystem and has numerous critical roles in both the medicinal and biological fields, human daily life is seriously threatened by its assorted harmful influences. By this virtue, tracking the amount of aluminum byrapid sensitive and selective recognition methodologies is of great importance. Based on this, a novel fluorescent chemosensor 4,4'-(propane-2,2-diyl)bis(2-(((-2-hydroxybenzylidene) hydrazineylidene)-methyl)phenol) (BFASA) capable of recognizing Al3+ in a medium was constructed via an easy Schiff-base reaction between bisphenol A-containing molecule and the salicylaldehyde. The metal-binding studies of BFASA indicated a drastically enhanced emission with color alteration from colorless to green establishing the utility of BFASA against monitoring of Al3+ and only Cu2+/Al3+ significantly enhanced the absorbance intensity of the probe solution at 433 and 406, respectively. Its ability to selectively sense Al3+ demonstrated "switch-on" fluorescence responses for Al3+ with a low detection limit (LOD) of 0.56 μM and good selectivity, and pH adaptation range (5-8). The stoichiometric ratio of BFASA against the Al3+ was verified by the Job's plot and TOF-MS analysis and determined as 1:2. To make the recognition process inexpensively, viable and straightforward, Smartphone application of BFASA was effectively applied to Al3+ sensing, which could benefit the on-site Al3+ recognition. In the fluorescence bio-imaging aspect, the BFASA could effectively monitor Al3+ in living cells.

Abstract
The recognition of toxic Al3+ in foods and biosystems has of great interest to researchers. Herein, a novel cyanobiphenyl-based chemosensor CATH (E)-N'-((4'-cyano-4-hydroxy-[1,1'-biphenyl]-3-yl)methylene)thiophene-2-carbohydrazide was fabricated and shown to recognize Al3+ in HEPES buffer:EtOH (90:10, v:v, pH = 7.4) by ''lighting-up'' fluorescence sensing. The CATH evidenced high sensitivity (LOD = 13.1 nM) and excellent selectivity to Al3+ over competing cations. The Job's plot, TOF-MS and theoretical computation studies were performed to probe the binding mechanism of Al3+ to CATH. Additionally; CATH was successfully utilized to practical applications and employed to recover of Al3+ from different food samples. More importantly, it was employed to intracellular Al3+ detection in living cells including THLE2 and HepG2.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Breast cancer is the most prevalent malignancy in women worldwide. Although pathogenic variants in the BRCA1/2 genes are responsible for the majority of hereditary breast cancer cases, a substantial proportion of patients are negative for pathogenic variations in these genes. In cancers, the signal transduction pathways of the cell are usually affected first. Therefore, this study aimed to detect and classified genetic variations in non-BRCA signaling genes and investigate the underlying genetic causes of susceptibility to breast cancer. METHODS Ninety-six patients without pathogenic variants in the BRCA1/2 genes who met the inclusion criteria were enrolled in the study, and 34 genes were analyzed using next-generation sequencing (NGS) for genetic analysis. RESULTS Based on the ClinVar database or American College of Medical Genetics criteria, a total of 55 variants of 16 genes were detected in 43 (44.8%) of the 96 patients included in the study. The pathogenic variants were found in the TP53, CHEK2, and RET genes, whereas the likely pathogenic variants were found in the FGFR1, FGFR3, EGFR, and NOTCH1 genes. CONCLUSION The examination of signaling genes in patients who met the established criteria for hereditary breast cancer but were negative for BRCA1/2 pathogenic variants provided additional information for approximately 8% of the families. The results of the present study suggest that NGS is a powerful tool for investigating the underlying genetic causes of occurrence and progression of breast cancer.

Abstract
Since cancer is one of the leading causes of death worldwide, the development of new anticancer drugs has become important. Phthalocyanines (Pcs) as anticancer agents have attracted particular attention in recent years. Especially water-soluble sulfonated phthalocyanines have been used consistently for both the diagnosis and treatment of many different types of cancer, such as small lung tumors. Motivated by these facts, since the anti-cancer activity of sulfonated water-soluble cobalt phthalocyanine in prostate and breast cancer without photoactivation is not known before, we aimed to investigate the in vitro anti-cancer effectiveness (cyto- and genotoxic effect) of alpha-substituted water-soluble cobalt phthalocyanine (WS-CoPc) complex on prostate and breast cancer cells for the first time. For this purpose ROS production, cell death, and DNA damage levels, changes in nuclear and cell morphology, and the expression of apoptosis and ROS-related genes were determined. WS-CoPc exhibited anti-cancer effects with cytotoxic and genotoxic features in both prostate and breast cancer cells also the anti-cancer efficacy is more prominent in prostate cancer cells. Therefore our results demonstrated that this Pc has high cytotoxic and genotoxic effects, especially in prostate cancer cells in vitro and further studies are needed to reveal the current anticancer potential of this Pc without photoactivation.

Abstract
Biocides, which are found in nature as persistent pollutants, pose a great danger to the ecosystem. Methylisothiazolinone (MIT), a widely used biocide, reaches plants by mixing with water and soil. Vermicompost tea (VCT), which strengthens the plant defence mechanism and increases its growth and development, is a liquid fertiliser consisting of the cooperation of worms with microbes. In the present study, after applying 0.4 g/L (EC50/2), 0.8 g/L (EC50), and 1.6 g/L (EC50 × 2) MIT concentrations without and with VCT on forage pea (Pisum sativum), root lengths, mitotic index data, chromosome and nuclei abnormalities, and DNA damage level were determined. When VCT applied and non-applied groups were compared, it was found that, especially in the VCT applied group, they cope with the stress conditions created by MIT. In addition, positive effects were observed in root lengths, mitotic index data, and amount of cell nuclei abnormalities. In line with other study results, VCT reduces cellular damage by regulating the normal life cycle disrupted in the cell due to mutagens using the curative-regulatory feature.

In
recent years, stimuli-responsive degradation has emerged as
a desirable design criterion for functional hydrogels to tune the
release of encapsulated payload as well as ensure degradation of the
gel upon completion of its function. Herein, redox-responsive hydrogels
with a well-defined network structure were obtained using a highly
efficient thiol-disulfide exchange reaction. In particular, gelation
occurred upon combining thiol-terminated tetra-arm polyethylene glycol
(PEG) polymers with linear telechelic PEG-based polymers containing
pyridyl disulfide units at their chain ends. Rapid gelation proceeds
with good conversions (>85%) to yield macroporous hydrogels possessing
high water uptake. Furthermore, due to the presence of the disulfide
linkages, the thus-obtained hydrogels can self-heal. The obtained
hydrogels undergo complete degradation when exposed to environments
rich in thiol-containing agents such as dithiothreitol (DTT) and L-glutathione
(GSH). Also, the release profile of encapsulated protein, namely,
bovine serum albumin, can be tuned by varying the molecular weight
of the polymeric precursors. Additionally, it was demonstrated that
complete dissolution of the hydrogel to rapidly release the encapsulated
protein occurs upon treating these hydrogels with DTT. Cytotoxicity
evaluation of the hydrogels and their degradation products indicated
the benign nature of these hydrogels. Additionally, the cytocompatible
nature of these materials was also evident from a live/dead cell viability
assay. One can envision that the facile fabrication and their ability
to degrade on-demand and release their payload will make these benign
polymeric scaffolds attractive for various biomedical applications.

A Fluorene based Fluorogenic ''Turn-off'' Chemosensor for the Recognition

Abstract
Background:
The traditional methods for the detection and quantification of Cu2+ and Fe3+
heavy metal ions are usually troublesome in terms of high-cost, non-portable, time-consuming, specialized
personnel and complicated tools, so their applications in practical analyses is limited. Therefore,
the development of cheap, fast and simple-use techniques/instruments with high sensitivity/selectivity
for the detection of heavy metal ions is highly demanded and studied.
Methods:
In this study, a fluorene-based fluorescent 'turn-off' sensor, methyl 2-(2-((((9H-fluoren-9-
yl)methoxy)carbonyl)amino)-3- phenylpropanamido) acetate (probe FLPG) was synthesized via onepot
reaction and characterized by 1H-NMR, 13C-APT-NMR, HETCOR, ATR-FTIR and elemental
analysis in detailed. All emission spectral studies of the probe FLPG have been performed in
CH3CN/HEPES (9/1, v/v, pH=7.4) media at rt. The quantum (Φ) yield of probe FLPG decreased considerably
in the presence of Cu2+ and Fe3+. The theoretical computation of probe FLPG and its complexes
were also performed using density functional theory (DFT). Furthermore, bio-imaging experiments
of the probe FLPG was successfully carried out for Cu2+ and Fe3+ monitoring in living-cells.
Results:
The probe FLPG could sense Cu2+ and Fe3+ with high selectivity and sensitivity, and quantitative
correlations (R2>0.9000) between the Cu2+/Fe3+ concentrations (0.0−10.0 equiv). The limits of detection
for Cu2+ and Fe3+ were found as 25.07 nM and 37.80 nM, respectively. The fluorescence
quenching in the sensor is managed by ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT) mechanism. Job’s plot
was used to determine the binding stoichiometry (1:2) of the probe FLPG towards Cu2+ and Fe3+. The
binding constants with strongly interacting Cu2+ and Fe3+ were determined as 4.56×108 M-2 and
2.02×1010 M-2, respectively, via the fluorescence titration experiments. The outcomes of the computational
study supported the fluorescence data. Moreover, the practical application of the probe FLPG
was successfully performed for living cells.
Conclusion:
This simple chemosensor system offers a highly selective and sensitive sensing platform
for the routine detection of Cu2+ and Fe3+, and it keeps away from the usage of costly and sophisticated
analysis systems.

Abstract
Herein, an easy assembled colorimetric and ''turn-on'' fluorescent sensor (probe P4SC) based on phenolphthalein was developed for carbonate ion (CO32-) sensing in a mixture of EtOH/H2O (v/v, 80/20, pH = 7, Britton-Robinson buffer) media. The probe P4SC demonstrated high sensitive and selective monitoring toward CO32- over other competitive anions. Interaction of CO32- with the probe P4SC resulted in a significant increment in emission intensity at λem = 498 nm (λex = 384 nm) due to the strategy of blocking the photo induced electron transfer (PET) mechanism. 1H NMR titration and Job's methods, as well as the theoretical study were carried out to support the probable stoichiometry of the reaction (1:2) between P4SC and CO32-. The binding constant of the probe P4SC with CO32- was calculated as 2.56 × 1010 M-2. The probe P4SC providing rapid response time (~0.5 min) with a satisfactorily low detection limit (14.7 nM) may be useful as a valuable realistic sensor. The imaging studies on the liver cancer cells (HepG2) shows the great potential of the probe P4SC for the sensation of intracellular CO32- anions. Abstract
In this study, a new phenolphthalein derivative, FFIZNA, has been planned and successfully prepared in an uncomplicated way. The probe FFIZNA could selectively monitor Al3+ and Zn2+ among other relevant cations with diverse colors through a turn-on emission response in EtOH:HEPES (9/1;v/v) media owing to the chelation enhanced fluorescence (CHEF), prevention of ESIPT, -C=N- isomerization and PET of the probe FFIZNA. The interactions of Al3+ and Zn2+ with the probe FFIZNA were confirmed by emission spectroscopy, Job's plot and 1H-NMR titration substantiated 1:2 reaction stoichiometry between FFIZNA and Al3+ and Zn2+. The time-response study displayed that the emission of FFIZNA with Al3+ and Zn2+, rapidly boosted and reached the stable value in less than 3.0 and 4.0 min, respectively. Therefore, the FFIZNA has successfully been utilized to the dual recognition of Al3+ and Zn2+ in solutions. Abstract
There has been significant interest in the use of peptides as antimicrobial agents, and peptide containing hydrogels have been proposed as biological scaffolds for various applications. Limited stability and rapid clearance of small molecular weight peptides pose challenges to their widespread implementation. As a common approach, antibacterial peptides are physically loaded into hydrogel scaffolds, which leads to continuous release through the passive mode with spatial control but provides limited control over drug dosage. Although utilization of peptide covalent linkage onto hydrogels addresses partially this problem, the peptide release is commonly too slow. To alleviate these challenges, in this work, maleimide-modified antimicrobial peptides are covalently conjugated onto furan-based cryogel (CG) scaffolds via the Diels-Alder cycloaddition at room temperature. The furan group offers a handle for specific loading of the peptides, thus minimizing passive and burst drug release. The porous nature of the CG matrix provides rapid loading and release of therapeutic peptides, apart from high water uptake. Interfacing the peptide adduct containing a CG matrix with a reduced graphene oxide-modified Kapton substrate allows "on-demand" photothermal heating upon near-infrared (NIR) irradiation. A fabricated photothermal device enables tunable and efficient peptide release through NIR exposure to kill bacteria. Apart from spatial confinement offered by this CG-based bandage, the selective ablation of planktonic Staphylococcus aureus is demonstrated. It can be envisioned that this modular "on-demand" peptide-releasing device can be also employed for other topical applications by appropriate choice of therapeutic peptides.

Abstract
A myriad of topical therapies and dressings are available to the clinicians for wound healing skin, but only a very few have shown their effectiveness in promoting wound repair due to challenges in controlling drug release. To address this issue, in this work, a near infrared (NIR)-light activable cryogel based on butyl methacrylate (BuMA) and poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate (PEGMEMA) incorporated with reduced graphene oxide (rGO) was fabricated. The obtained cryogel provides the required hydrophilicity beneficial for wound treatment. The excellent photo-thermal properties of rGO allow for heating the cryogel, which results in subsequent swelling of the cryogel (CG) followed by release of the encapsulated drug load, cefepime in our case. Without photothermal activation, no release of payload was observed. The potential of this bandage for wound healing was examined using an ex vivo human skin model infected with Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus). Apart from the efficacy of the cryogel based wound healing system, our results also suggest that the ex vivo wound model evaluated here provides a rapid and valuable tool to study superficial skin infections in humans and test the efficacy of antimicrobial agents.

Abstract
Utilization of fluorescent techniques in detection of various metal ions actively pursued allow ultrasensitive and selective detections of metal ions and prevent the adverse effect of cations such as aluminum (III) ions. In this study, two novel fluorescent chemosensors containing thiazole derivatives, ((E)-2-(4-hydroxy-3-(((2-hydroxyphenyl)imino)methyl)phenyl)-3-phenyl thiazolidin-4-one) AM1 and (2,3-bis(4-hydroxy-3-((E)-((2-hydroxyphenyl)imino) methyl) phenyl) thiazolidin-4-one) AM2, have been fabricated. The probes AM1 and AM2 were prepared using the condensation reaction between 2-hydroxy-5-(4-oxo-3-phenyl thiazolidin-2-yl) benzaldehyde and 2-aminophenol for the probe AM1 and 5,5'-(4-oxothiazolidine-2,3-diyl)bis(2-hydroxy benzaldehyde) and 2-aminophenol for the probe AM2. Afterwards, they were analyzed by various types of NMR and FT-IR spectroscopy, ESI-MS spectra, and elemental anayzer. As a second step, each fabricated chemosensor was able to use turn on fluorescence sensing for detecting of Al3+ ions in ACN/H2O (v/v = 50/50, 10.0 μM, pH = 7.0) solution. Clear complexes formed between the probe AM1 and Al3+ ions and also the probe AM2 and Al3+ ions was determined by not only 1H NMR titration study but also calculated by using the Job's plot. The limit of detection (LOD) value was found to be 0.11 μM (AM1) and 4.4 μM (AM2) for Al3+ ions. Likewise, cell imaging and in vitro cytotoxicity experiments of Al3+ ions in Human epithelium Lovo cells exhibited that prepared chemosensors had low cytotoxicity and blue fluorescence when they treated with of Al3+ ions in the cellular system.

Abstract
Herein, we report the preparation of a fluorescent sensor based on coumarin derivative for copper (II) ion sensing in CH3CN/HEPES media. 6,7-dihydroxy-3-(4-(trifluoro)methylphenyl)coumarin (HMAC) sensor was fabricated and analyzed by spectroscopic techniques. The sensor demonstrates "turn on-off" fluorescence quenching in the presence of copper (II) ions at 458 nm. A clear complex between the chemosensor HMAC and copper (II) ions was characterized by ESI-MS as well as the Job's method. Also, the limit of detection (LOD, 3σ/k) value was determined as 24.5 nM in CH3CN/HEPES (95/5, v/v) buffer media (pH = 7.0). This value is lower than the admissible level of copper (II) ions in drinking water (maximum 31.5 μM) reported by EU Water Framework Directive (WFD) and World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines. The theoretical calculations (density functional theory, DFT) have been performed for the geometric optimized structures. As a final stage, real sample analyses have successfully been performed by using HMAC, as well as ICP-OES method. The relative standard deviation for copper (II) in mineral and drinking water samples has been determined to be below 0.15% and recovery values are in the range of 95.48-109.20%.

Abstract
Early detection of probes is very important for limiting toxic effects of various transition metal ions for example aluminum and zinc. Monitoring of these metal ions can be challenging via conventional methods since they are high cost instrumentations, time consuming and so on. We report facile preparation of a fluorescence probe containing biphenyl groups that effectively selective and superb sensitivity towards aluminum (III) and zinc (II) in neutral solutions without interference from each other and other ions. In neutral pH value, the probe FOB displayed the OFF-ON fluorescence enhancement at 464 nm and 512 nm toward aluminum (III) and zinc (II), respectively. The detection limit values of FOB for Al3+ and Zn2+ in neutral solutions were 1.27 and 1.02 nM, respectively and these values were significantly lower than permitted Al3+ and Zn2+ concentrations in drinking water determined by the World Health Organization (WHO) and European Water Quality. Also, fabricated cyano-biphenyl based probe is effective for sensing for aluminum (III) and zinc (II) in living human colon cancer cells even when employed at low concentrations (1.0 μM). Overall, this work allows us to obtain a great potential to be applied to detect Al3+ and Zn2+.

Abstract
Surfaces engineered to "specifically capture" and "release on demand" analytes ranging from biomolecules to cells find niche applications in areas such as diagnostics and detection. Utilization of a disulfide-based linker as a building block allows fabrication of a novel hydrogel-based platform that incorporates a "catch and release" attribute. Hydrogels incorporating pyridyl disulfide groups as thiol-reactive handles were prepared by photopolymerization in the presence of a poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG)-based cross-linker. A range of bulk and micropatterned hydrogels with varying amounts of the reactive group were prepared using PEG-based monomers with different chain lengths. Thiol-containing molecules were conjugated to these hydrogels through the thiol-disulfide exchange reaction under ambient conditions with high efficiencies, as determined by UV-vis spectroscopy. Facile conjugation of a thiol-containing fluorescent dye, namely 4,4-difluoro-1,3,5,7-tetramethyl-8-[(10-mercapto)]-4-bora-3 a,4 a-diaza- s-indacene, was demonstrated, followed by its effective cleavage in the presence of dithiothreitol (DTT), a thiol-containing disulfide-reducing agent. Conjugation of a biotin-containing ligand onto the hydrogels allowed specific binding of protein extravidin when exposed to a mixture of extravidin and bovine serum albumin. The bound protein could be released from the hydrogel by simple exposure to a DTT solution. Likewise, hydrogels modified with a cell-adhesive peptide unit containing the RGD sequence acted as favorable substrates for cellular attachment. Incubation of these cell-attached hydrogel surfaces in a DTT-containing solution leads to facile detachment of cells from the surfaces, while retaining a high level of cell viability. It can be envisioned that the benign nature of these hydrogels, their facile fabrication, and modular functionalization will make them attractive platforms for many applications.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To determine the effects of Egb761 on testicular tissues and semen parameters in rats exposed to cellphone waves. BACKGROUND EGb761 has antioxidant properties as a free-radical scavenger. Cellphone electromagnetic radiation (EMR) induces oxidative stress in cells. METHODS Twenty-one Wistar albino male adult rats were divided into three groups (control, experimental, treatment), including seven rats in each. The experimental and treatment groups were exposed to cellphone EMR (0.96 W/kg) for six weeks (4 hrs/day). Egb761 (100 mg/kg/day) was also added to the treatment. Testes, epididymal semen and blood plasma were used for analysis. RESULTS Exposure to cellular phone radiation resulted in a significant impairment in testicular morphometry and histological structure, reduction of total and motile sperm numbers and plasma testosterone level. Egb761 administration improved testicular damage and led to a marked increase in plasma testosterone levels and total and motile sperm numbers. CONCLUSION Male reproductive system is susceptible to cellphone radiation. Cellphone waves induce toxic effects in testicular tissues, impair spermatogenesis and cause an imbalance in testosterone hormone levels. Egb761 ameliorated these toxic effects by reversing testicular tissue damage, restoring normal spermatogenesis and hormone levels. This suggests that Egb761 is a potential therapeutic agent against EMR-induced male reproductive toxicity (Tab. 3, Fig. 6, Ref. 45).

Abstract
Design, synthesis, and application of cyclodextrin (CD) containing thermoresponsive hydrogels fabricated from thiol-reactive telechelic polymers are reported. Hydrophilic polymers containing 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate and/or di(ethylene glycol)methylether methacrylate monomers as side chains and thiol-reactive groups at chain ends were synthesized. A series of hydrogels was fabricated using thiol-ene conjugation of these thiol-reactive polymers with multivalent thiol-containing CDs as crosslinkers. Clear and transparent hydrogels were obtained with good conversion (79-89%) by utilizing the "nucleophilic" and "radical" thiol-ene "click" reactions. Analysis of the amount of residual thiol groups in these hydrogels using Ellman's reagent suggested that gels with a moderately well-defined network structure were obtained. Hydrogels fabricated using different telechelic polymers were examined for their properties such as morphology, equilibrium water uptake, and rheological characteristics. Cytocompatibility of these hydrogels was ascertained by a cell viability assay that demonstrated low toxicity toward fibroblast cells. Thereafter, the CD-containing hydrogels were evaluated for the loading and controlled release of puerarin, an antiglaucoma drug. Utilization of thermoresponsive polymers as the matrix for these hydrogels allows use of temperature as a stimulus to modulate the drug release. A slower and more sustained drug release was observed at physiological temperatures compared to ambient conditions. The effect of temperature on the elasticity of the hydrogel was investigated rheologically to demonstrate that the collapse of the network structure occurs near physiological temperatures. The increased hydrophobicity and compactness of the gel matrix at higher temperatures results in a slower drug release. The strategy employed here demonstrates that tuning the matrix composition of hydrogels with well-defined network structures through appropriate choice of responsive copolymers allows design of materials with control of their physical properties and drug-release behavior.

Abstract
Poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) based bulk hydrogels and cryogels containing activated carbonate groups as amine reactive handles to facilitate drug conjugations through carbamate linkages were fabricated and evaluated as slow releasing drug reservoirs. As an initial approach, photopolymerization of N-hydroxysuccinimide (NHS)-activated carbonate functional group containing monomer and PEG-methacrylate in the presence of a cross-linker was utilized to obtain bulk hydrogels with high gel conversions. The resultant hydrogels possessed moderate water uptake (170-340%) which was dependent on the monomer ratios. These hydrogels were functionalized with an anticancer drug, namely, doxorubicin. Surprisingly, while negligible drug release was observed from the bulk hydrogels under normal pH, only about 6% drug release was observed under acidic condition. Limited swelling of these hydrogels as well as lack of porous structure as deduced from scanning electron microscopy analysis might explain the poor drug release. To enhance the drug releasing capacity of these hydrogels that might stem from the increased porosity, reactive carbonate group bearing cryogels were synthesized. Compared to the bulk hydrogels, cryogels were highly porous in structure and also possessed much higher swelling capacity (1150-1500%). As a result of these distinctions, a 7-fold enhancement in drug release was observed for the cryogel system compared to the relating hydrogel. In vitro studies demonstrated that the anticancer drug doxorubicin conjugated through carbamate linkers to the cryogels was released and proved effective against MDA-MB-231 human breast cancer cells. Overall, a novel class of slow releasing nontoxic hydrogel and cryogel scaffolds with potential applications as anticancer drug reservoirs was realized.

Abstract
Purpose: Foot bathing therapy is a simple technique that induces sensations of comfort and relaxation. The aim of this study was to examine the effect of foot bathing therapy on heart rate variability (HRV) parameters in a healthy population.
Methods: Participants were twenty healthy female subjects (median age=20.67 years, SD=1.04). The recording ECG was applied for 5 minutes before and for 5 minutes after foot bathing therapy of 10 minutes. Subjects rested for 10 minutes without recording ECG in order to stabilize autonomic parameters. The digital signals were then transferred to a laptop and analyzed using LabChart® software (MLS310/7 HRV Module).
Results: Almost all HRV parameters increased and heart (pulse) rate and LF/HF ratio decreased after foot bathing therapy compared with before foot bathing therapy.
Conclusions: These results indicate for the first time in humans that foot bathing might induce a state of balance between sympathetic and parasympathetic systems and might be helpful to prevent possible cardiac arrhythmias.

Abstract
PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of Ginkgo biloba extract (EGb 761) on oxidative events of brain in cisplatin-administrated rats. METHODS Rats were divided into four experimental groups: 1) control (n=6); 2) cisplatin (8 mg/kg, intraperitoneally one dose, n=6); 3) EGb 761 (100 mg/kg intraperitoneally for 15 days, n=6); and 4) cisplatin + EGb 761 (n=6). After drug administration, rats were sacrificed and brain tissues were removed. Nitric oxide (NO), malondialdehyde (MDA) and glutathione (GSH) levels were evaluated in brain tissues. RESULTS Single dose cisplatin administration significantly increased NO and GSH levels, but decreased MDA levels in brain tissue samples. EGb 761 treatment reversed the effects of cisplatin on NO and GSH levels, but did not affect the decreased MDA levels. CONCLUSION Results of the study indicate that oxidative stress can be an important pathogenetic mechanism of cisplatin-induced neurotoxicity. EGb 761, an standardized extract of G. biloba leaves that has antioxidant properties, may improve the oxidative stress-related neurological side effects of cisplatin.

Abstract
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of Ginkgo biloba extract (EGb 761) on oxidative events of brain in cisplatin-administrated rats.
Methods: Rats were divided into four experimental groups: 1) control (n=6); 2) cisplatin (8 mg/kg, intraperitoneally one dose, n=6); 3) EGb 761 (100 mg/kg intraperitoneally for 15 days, n=6); and 4) cisplatin + EGb 761 (n=6). Abstract
PURPOSE Foot bathing therapy is a simple technique that induces sensations of comfort and relaxation. The aim of this study was to examine the effect of foot bathing therapy on heart rate variability (HRV) parameters in a healthy population. METHODS Participants were twenty healthy female subjects (median age=20.67 years, SD=1.04). The recording ECG was applied for 5 minutes before and for 5 minutes after foot bathing therapy of 10 minutes. Subjects rested for 10 minutes without recording ECG in order to stabilize autonomic parameters. The digital signals were then transferred to a laptop and analyzed using LabChart® software (MLS310/7 HRV Module). RESULTS Almost all HRV parameters increased and heart (pulse) rate and LF/HF ratio decreased after foot bathing therapy compared with before foot bathing therapy. CONCLUSIONS These results indicate for the first time in humans that foot bathing might induce a state of balance between sympathetic and parasympathetic systems and might be helpful to prevent possible cardiac arrhythmias.

PURPOSE:
The aim of the study was to determine whether LNR have additional contribution on pathologic lymph node staging.
METHODS:
To examine the prognostic value of LNR examined the original histopathological reports of 2049 node-positive breast cancer patients treated in the references centers of the Turkey. The LNR was defined as the number of positive lymph nodes (LNs) over the total number of LNs removed. The LNR cutoffs were defined as low-risk, 0.01-0.20; intermediate-risk, 0.21- 0.65; and high-risk, LNR >0.65.
RESULTS:
The median follow-up was 11.8 years. Median Disease free survival (DFS) was 191.8, 110.6 and 78.2 months in patients with pN1, pN2 and pN3 tumor, respectively (p<0.001). Median DFS was 191.9, 106.4 and 78.1 months in patients with LNR low, intermediate and high risk tumor, respectively (p<0.001). Median DFS was not reached and 200.1 months in patients with pN2 and LNR low risk patients, pN1 and LNR high risk patients, respectively (p=0.254).
CONCLUSIONS:
LNR is an important prognostic parameter for DFS and might provide potentially more information than pN-stage in patients with pN1/LNR high risk and pN2/LNR low risk.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Although Ras-association domain family of gene 2 (RASSF2) has been shown to undergo promoter methylation at high frequency in some cancer types and in brain metastases, its clinical utility as a useful prognostic molecular marker remains unclear in gastric cancer. METHODS Prognostic significance of RASSF2 expression was retrospectively analysed by immunohistochemically in 105 patients with gastric cancer who underwent curative gastrectomy. RESULTS Low RASSF2 expression was detected in 58 (55 %) patients, whereas 47 patients (45 %) had high RASSF2 expression. Lymph node involvement, pT stage, TNM stage, vascular invasion, perineural invasion and the presence of recurrence were found to be significantly related to RASSF2 expression levels. Low PRL-3 expression was closely correlated with lymph node metastasis (p = 0.001), advanced pT stage (p = 0.021), advanced TNM stage (p < 0.001), the presence of vascular invasion (p < 0.001), perineural invasion (p = 0.018) and high prevalence of recurrence (p = 0.003) compared with high RASSF2 expression. The median disease-free survival (DFS) time for patients with low RASSF2 expression was significantly worse than that of patients with high RASSF2 expression (10.2 vs. 50.6 months, p < 0.001). In addition, patients with high RASSF2 expression had the higher overall survival (OS) interval compared to patients with low RASSF2 expression (NR vs. 14.9 months, p < 0.001). In the multivariate analysis, the rate of RASSF2 expression levels was an independent prognostic factor, for DFS [p < 0.001, HR 0.12 (0.10-0.88)] and OS [p < 0.001, HR 0.10 (0.04-0.46)], as were pT stage and TNM stage, respectively. CONCLUSIONS RASSF2 may be an important molecular marker for carcinogenesis, prognosis and progression in gastric cancer, but the potential value of RASSF2 expression as a useful molecular marker in gastric cancer progression should be evaluated, comprehensively. It would be possible to develop treatments targeting RASSF2 and advance new treatment strategies for gastric cancer.

Abstract
AIM The optimal treatment in older persons with metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC) is complicated by a lack of general agreement. The aim of this study was to evaluate the activity of bevacizumab plus capecitabine combination in elderly mCRC patients who were not suitable for chemotherapy with irinotecan and oxaliplatin-containing regimens. MATERIALS AND METHODS Seventy years and older patients with metastatic colorectal carcinoma were included in this retrospective study. Bevacizumab was administered at a dose of 7.5 mg/kg on day 1 as an intravenous (IV) infusion over 30-90 min every 21 days, and capecitabine was prescribed at 1000 mg/m(2) twice daily on days 1-14 of the same 21-day schedule. RESULTS Eighty-two consecutive patients (47 men, 35 women) were included in the study. The mean age was 75.5 (SD 3.9, range 70-87). Half of the patients were older than 75 years. There were 55 patients (67.1 %) with a good Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG) performance status (PS: 0-1) and the remaining 27 patients (32.9 %) had a poor ECOG performance status (PS: 2). With a median follow-up period of 18.5 months, the median progression-free survival (PFS) was 10 months (95 % CI, 7.8-12.1) and the median OS was 25 months (95 % CI, 18.6-31.3). The main toxicities recorded were non-hematological. Thirty-one patients (37 %) experienced grade 3/4 adverse events, the most common being hand-foot syndrome (9.8 %). No fatal toxicity resulting from this regimen was recorded. CONCLUSIONS Considering the toxicity profile and survival outcomes, the combination regimen of capecitabine and bevacizumab is a potentially feasible treatment option in elderly mCRC patients.

Abstract
Background: Infectious diseases and social contacts in early life have been proposed to modulate brain tumour risk during late childhood and adolescence. Methods: CEFALO is an interview-based case–control study in Denmark, Norway, Sweden and Switzerland, including children and adolescents aged 7–19 years with primary intracranial brain tumours diagnosed between 2004 and 2008 and matched population controls. Results: The study included 352 cases (participation rate: 83%) and 646 controls (71%). There was no association with various measures of social contacts: daycare attendance, number of childhours at daycare, attending baby groups, birth order or living with other children. Cases of glioma and embryonal tumours had more frequent sick days with infections in the first 6 years of life compared with controls. In 7–19 year olds with 4+ monthly sick day, the respective odds ratios were 2.93 (95% confidence interval: 1.57–5.50) and 4.21 (95% confidence interval: 1.24–14.30). Interpretation: There was little support for the hypothesis that social contacts influence childhood and adolescent brain tumour risk. The association between reported sick days due to infections and risk of glioma and embryonal tumour may reflect involvement of immune functions, recall bias or inverse causality and deserve further attention.
