XK-aprosencephaly and related entities

We offer further biological characterization of the XK atelen/aprosencephaly syndrome in two infants, one with prolonged survival, the other presenting prenatally with apparent hydranencephaly and an orbital tumor (OS). Familial occurrence in the former born to presumably nonconsanguineous Lybian parents may represent parental germinal mosaicism or autosomal recessive inheritance. Both had apparently normal chromosomes; however, the Lybian infant had slightly increased induced chromosome breakage suggesting that this rare multiple congenital anomalies syndrome may involve a DNA repair defect. Virtual absence of atelen/aprosencephalic structures may lead to an arthrogryposis-like prenatal movement disorder. The orbital tumor in the Utah infant consisted of dystopic neural tissue compressing a rudimentary globe and was connected by a thin bridge of neural tissue to the small mass of disorganized brain tissue usually found in atelen/aprosencephalic infants and fetuses. No evidence of an encephaloclastic process was found in the autopsied Utah infant.

An air pollution model for use in epidemiological studies: evaluation with measured levels of nitrogen dioxide and benzene

The aim of the study was to evaluate the predictions derived from the Danish Operational Street Pollution Model (OSPM) when the input data are obtained by simple methods that could be used in large-scale epidemiological studies. The model calculations were thus compared with passive sampler measurements of nitrogen dioxide and benzene at 103 street locations in Copenhagen, Denmark, and at 101 locations in rural areas. Data on traffic and street configuration were collected by means of a simple registration scheme in which forms were filled out by local municipal authorities. Meteorological data were derived from routine measurements at Copenhagen airport, and data on background air pollution were based on a simple empirical model. Differences in air pollution levels between rural areas and Copenhagen and differences in nitrogen dioxide concentrations at various locations in Copenhagen were well reproduced by the OSPM. The correlation coefficients (r) between the measured and the predicted half-year average concentrations of nitrogen dioxide in Copenhagen were between 0.75 and 0.80 for various degrees of precision of the input data for the model. The results indicate that the OSPM used with the presented methods for generation of input data might be useful in assessing long-term exposure to air pollutants in epidemiological studies.

[Comparison between 2 types of feeding in acute diarrhea in childhood]

134 infants under three years of age suffering from severe diarrhoea are related. 57 of these had quite serious dehydration and 77 presented protracted diarrhoea (less than or equal to 15 days). 50% were treated with a milk with reduced content of lactose. Other 50% with a diet lactose-free for a day followed by the same milk used before diarrheal disease. Results obtained, few relapses and quick normalization of stool are supporting the use of a milk with reduced contents of lactose.

Treatment of hirsutism and acne in women with two combinations of cyproterone acetate and ethinylestradiol

175 women of reproductive age, with hirsutism of differing degrees and different pathogenetic causes (ovarian, adrenal, iatrogenic) or idiopathic, and acne were treated with two different combinations of Cyprotrone acetate and ethinyl estradiol (SH 8.1041 and SH B209AB). 90 patients were given SH 8.1041 and 10 were given SH B209AB. 75 received both preparations. The total number of treatment cycles was 1534. Clinical, hormonal and biochemical assessments were made before, during and after treatment. The degrees of hirsutism and acne, and of seborrhea and hair loss when present, were scored by means of a modified version of the Ferriman and Gallway criteria. SH 8.1041 brought about a significant improvement in the majority of the patients. SH B209AB was generally used as maintenance therapy for hirsutism and severe acne. It was the initial treatment of choice in patients with milder acne. Reduction of hirsutism was usually apparent after the fourth cycle of therapy and acne regressed after the first month. Both combinations were well-tolerated biochemically. In a few patients on SH 8.1042, slight and transient increases in BSP, SGOT, SGPT and bilirubin were observed, but cessation of treatment was not necessary. Some patients on SH 8.1041 complained of transient frigidity, mild depression, breast discomfort and nausea.

Metabolic studies with formebolone (2-formyl-17 (alpha)-methyl-androsta-1,4-diene-11 (alpha), 17 (beta)-diol-3-one) in humans

Controlled within-group and between-group clinical studies indicate that the administration of Formebolone, an anabolic steroid, increases protein synthesis in humans as expressed by a positive nitrogen balance.
