Abstract
The prevalence of anatomical-based subtypes of feline congenital extrahepatic portosystemic shunts (EHPSS) has not been completely elucidated. The goal of this study was to use CT angiography to create an anatomical-based nomenclature system for feline congenital EHPSS. Additionally, subjective portal perfusion scores were generated to determine if intrinsic portal vein development was associated with different shunt conformations or patient age at the time of CT. The SVSTS and VIRIES list services were used to recruit cases. Data collected included patient DOB, gender, breed, weight, CT date, and reported diagnosis. Shunts were classified based upon (1) the shunt portal vessel(s) of origin, (2) the shunt systemic vessel(s) of insertion, and (3) any substantial portal vessels contributing to the shunt. Additionally, hepatic portal perfusion was subjectively scored between 1 (poor/none) and 5 (good/normal) based on the caliber of the intrahepatic PVs. A total of 264 CT scans were submitted from 29 institutions. Due to exclusion criteria, 33 (13%) were removed, leaving 231 CT scans to be included. Twenty-five different EHPSS anatomies were identified with five classifications accounting for 78% of all shunts (LGP [53%], LGC-post [11%], LCG [7%], LGC-pre [4%], and PC [4%]). Shunt origin involved the left gastric vein in 75% of the described classifications. Significant differences were identified among the five most common shunt types with respect to age at the time of CT scan (P = .002), breed (P < .001), and subjective portal perfusion score (P < .001). This refined anatomical classification system for feline EHPSS may enable improved understanding, treatment comparisons, and outcome prediction for cats with these anomalies.

Abstract
The phrenic lymph node (PLN) has been described in bovine, equine, and feline anatomic references but descriptions in canine anatomic references are currently lacking. Authors have observed a well-defined, soft tissue attenuating, contrast-enhancing structure in a location consistent with previous anatomic descriptions of the PLN in dogs that underwent thoracic CT for neoplastic staging. The aims of this two-part, retrospective/prospective, anatomic, prevalence study were (1) to describe the presence of a soft tissue structure close to the thoracic caudal vena cava, defined as the presumed PLN, in a series of dogs that underwent CT as part of the staging for metastatic disease; (2) to confirm the lymphatic origin of the presumed PLN in a dog through postmortem examination; (3) to assess the prevalence of the presumed PLN in a population of dogs that underwent thoracic CT or MRI for different clinical purposes; and (4) to assess the possibility to visualize the presumed PLN with ultrasonography. The lymphatic origin of the presumed PLN was confirmed by postmortem examination in one dog. The presumed PLN was visible in 29 of 777 canine CT examinations (prevalence 3.7%). The presumed PLN was not visible in 9 of 10 prospectively recruited ultrasound cases. Most dogs with visible presumed PLNs were large-medium breeds that were presented for neoplastic staging purposes. Findings indicated that a structure consistent with the previously reported anatomic features of PLN in cattle, horses, and cats may be detected with a low prevalence in canine CT and MRI examinations.

Abstract
A 7-week-old male Doberman presented with tachypnea, dyspnea and a VI/VI, left cranial, continuous heart murmur. Thoracic radiographs revealed severe left-sided cardiomegaly, presence of a rounded soft tissue opacity in the caudodorsal aspect of the thoracic cavity and signs of left-sided congestive heart failure. Clinical signs of heart failure were medically controlled. Echocardiography and computed tomography demonstrated a left-to-right shunting patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) in combination with a right-to-left shunting pulmonary arteriovenous malformation (PAVM) between the right main pulmonary artery and the right caudal pulmonary vein. Arterial blood gasses revealed mild hypoxemia. Transcatheter occlusion of the PDA using an Amplatz Canine Duct Occluder was performed. Four months post-operatively, echocardiography showed normal cardiac size and function with complete PDA closure. Thoracic radiographs revealed absence of the rounded opacity and resolution of cardiomegaly and vascular congestion. The PAVM was no longer visualized on repeated computed tomography and the arterial blood gasses were within normal limits. A PAVM connecting a pulmonary artery to a pulmonary vein has only rarely been reported in dogs. This report describes the presence of a congenital PAVM in combination with a PDA in a dog, which has not been previously reported in veterinary medicine.

Abstract
A two-year and four-month, male German Shepherd was referred for exercise intolerance and panting. Irregular heart auscultation (250 beats per minute (bpm)) and pulse deficits were noted on physical exam. Electrocardiogram (ECG) showed irregular, narrow-QRS tachycardia without P waves compatible with coarse atrial fibrillation (AF). A 24-h ECG showed sustained AF (mean ventricular response rate 92 bpm). Echocardiography showed no structural abnormalities. Given the young age and presence of AF-related symptoms, rhythm control was preferred. Transthoracic electrical cardioversion was successfully performed six weeks later but AF recurred within 24-h. Sotalol was started but discontinued due to poor tolerance and AF persisted. Seven months after AF diagnosis, radiofrequency catheter ablation (RFCA) aiming for pulmonary vein isolation was performed under general anaesthesia. After transseptal puncture, three-dimensional electroanatomical mapping of the left atrium was performed. Point-by-point pulmonary vein isolation was achieved by RFCA. Seventy-eight RFCA lesions were placed in the left atrium encircling the three pulmonary vein ostia followed by electrical cardioversion. No complications occurred and the dog was discharged with amiodarone. In the immediate post-operative phase, there was recurrence of persistent AF requiring electrical cardioversion. Furthermore, at one month after the ablation, the dog experienced a single and transient paroxysm of AF. Since then, stable sinus rhythm (SR) was retained on daily ECG monitoring at home and confirmed by 24-h ECG three months post-operatively. Amiodarone was stopped subsequently. At the time of writing (one year post-operative), the dog remains in SR with normal exercise tolerance.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To report the presence of urolithiasis in dogs long-term after gradual attenuation of congenital extrahepatic portosystemic shunts (cEHPSS). ANIMALS 25 client-owned dogs that underwent gradual attenuation of a cEHPSS, of which 19 had a closed cEHPSS and 6 developed multiple acquired portosystemic shunts (MAPSS) following surgery. PROCEDURES A retrospective study with prospective follow-up was performed. Dogs that underwent cEHPSS surgery and had their postoperative cEHPSS status determined by transsplenic portal scintigraphy or CT angiography 3 months postoperatively were prospectively contacted and invited for a long-term follow-up visit (a minimum of 6 months postoperatively). Retrospective data were collected, and during the prospective follow-up visit a thorough history, blood tests and urinalysis, and ultrasonography of the urinary tract were performed to assess the presence of urinary signs and urolithiasis. RESULTS Of 25 included dogs, 1 of 19 (5%) dogs with closed cEHPSS and 4 of 6 (67%) dogs with MAPSS had urolithiasis at long-term follow-up. Three (50%) dogs with MAPSS developed new uroliths. Long-term, dogs with closed cEHPSS that initially presented with and without urolithiasis had significantly less urolithiasis compared to dogs with MAPSS (P = .013 and P = .010, respectively). In the 4 dogs with closed cEHPSS that initially presented with nephrolithiasis, nephroliths became smaller or were no longer visible at the long-term follow-up visit. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Dogs that developed MAPSS following cEHPSS surgery are at greater risk of urolithiasis compared to those with closed cEHPSS. Furthermore, ammonium urate uroliths might dissolve if portosystemic shunting ceases to exist.

Abstract
Primary thoracic wall neoplasia is uncommon in dogs and the prognosis depends on tumor type. The aims of this retrospective, multi-center, observational study were to describe CT features of primary thoracic wall neoplasia in dogs and to test the hypothesis that CT features would differ among tumor types. Dogs with a diagnosis of primary thoracic wall bone neoplasia and thoracic CT study were included. CT findings recorded were as follows: dimensions, location, invasiveness, grade and type of mineral attenuation, periosteal reaction, contrast enhancement, and presence of presumed pulmonary metastases, pleural effusion, and sternal lymphadenopathy. Fifty-eight cases were included (54 ribs and four sternum). Fifty-six were malignant (sarcomas - SARC) and two were benign (chondromas - CHO). Out of the 56 malignant tumors, 41 had histological confirmation of the tumor type: 23 (56%) osteosarcomas (OSA), 10 (24%) chondrosarcomas (CSA), and eight (20%) hemangiosarcomas (HSA). The majority of rib tumors were right-sided (59%) and ventrally located (72%). Malignant masses showed severe invasiveness, mild/moderate contrast enhancement, and different grades of mineral attenuation. Sternal lymphadenopathy was significantly more frequent in dogs with OSA and HSA compared to dogs with CSA (p = 0.004 and p = 0.023). Dogs with HSA showed significantly lower mineral attenuation grades compared to dogs with OSA (p = 0.043). Primary thoracic wall bone neoplasias were more frequently arising from the ribs, with only a few cases of sternal masses. Findings can be used to help prioritize differential diagnoses for CT studies of dogs with thoracic wall neoplasia.

Abstract
The thymus is a lymphatic mediastinal organ that is largely subject to changes with age. In human patients, the CT characteristics of the thymus in children and adults is well described. Furthermore, it is known in human medicine that stress can lead to a reduction in the size of the thymus, followed by a phase of hyperplasia (called the ‘rebound effect’). The visualization of thymic tissue in the cranial mediastinum of adult dogs with neoplasia is possible and could be related to a similar effect. In this study, we aimed to describe the CT characteristics of the thymus in adult dogs with neoplasia and to compare the aspect of the thymus in these dogs to juvenile dogs with a presumed normal thymus. A total of 11 adult dogs with neoplasia and 20 juvenile dogs were included. Several CT features of the thymus were evaluated, including the size, shape, and pre- and post-contrast attenuation values. The overall appearance was lobulated in all of the adult dogs and homogeneous in all of the juvenile dogs; it was left-sided in all of the adult dogs, while it was located in the midline in a few of the juvenile dogs (right-sided only in one). The thymus was less attenuating in adult dogs, in some cases with negative minimum pre-contrast attenuation values. In some dogs with neoplasia, the thymus can be detected at CT examination despite their age.

Abstract
The primate scapula has been studied widely since its shape has been shown to correlate with how the forelimb is used in daily activities. In this study, we expand on the existing literature and use an image-based methodology that was originally developed for orthopaedic practice to quantify and compare the three-dimensional (3D) morphology of the scapula across humans and great apes. We expect that this image-based approach will allow us to identify differences between great apes and humans that can be related to differences in mobility and loading regime of the shoulder. We hypothesize that gorillas and chimpanzees will have a similar scapular morphology, geared towards stability and weight-bearing in knuckle-walking, whilst the scapular morphology of orangutans is expected to be more similar to that of humans given their high glenohumeral mobility associated with their suspensory lifestyle. We made 3D reconstructions of computed tomography scans of 69 scapulae from four hominid genera (Pongo, Gorilla, Pan and Homo). On these 3D bone meshes, the inferior glenoid plane was determined, and subsequently, a set of bony landmarks on the scapular body, coracoid, and acromion were defined. These landmarks allowed us to measure a set of functionally relevant angles which represent acromial overhang, subacromial space and coracoacromial space. The angles that were measured are: the delto-fulcral triangle (DFT), comprising the alpha, beta, and delta angle, the acromion-glenoid angle (AGA), the coracoid-glenoid centre-posterior acromial angle (CGA), the anterior tilt (TA CGA) and the posterior tilt of the CGA (PT CGA). Three observers placed the landmarks on the 3D bone meshes, allowing us to calculate the inter-observer error. The main differences in the DFT were found between humans and the great apes, with small differences between the great apes. The DFT of humans was significantly lower compared to that of the great apes, with the smallest alpha (32.7°), smallest delta (45.7°) and highest beta angle (101.6°) of all genera. The DFT of chimpanzees was significantly higher compared to that of humans (p < 0.01), with a larger alpha (37.6°) and delta angle (54.5°) and smaller beta angle (87.9°). The mean AGA of humans (59.1°) was significantly smaller (p < 0.001) than that of gorillas (68.8°). The mean CGA of humans (110.1°) was significantly higher (p < 0.001) than in orangutans (92.9°). Humans and gorillas showed mainly a posterior tilt of their coracoacromial complex whilst chimpanzees showed mainly an anterior tilt. The coracoacromial complex of the orangutans was not tilted anteriorly or posteriorly. With our image-based method, we were able to identify morphological features of the scapula that differed significantly between hominid genera. However, we did not find an overall dichotomy in scapular morphology geared towards high stability (Pan/Gorilla) or high mobility (Homo/Pongo). Further research is needed to investigate the functional implications of these differences in scapular morphology.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Stenosis is a postoperative complication reported in 12-17% of male cats that undergo perineal urethrostomy (PU). This study compared two different revision techniques for failed perineal urethrostomies. The first objective was to evaluate the feasibility of performing a transpelvic urethrostomy (TPU) after a previous, correctly performed PU in male cats. The second objective was to determine the residual urethral length, orifice diameter, and the position of the orifice relative to the pubic brim and anus after PU, TPU and subpubic urethrostomy (SPU). METHODS Twenty male cat cadavers were randomly divided into two groups: TPU and SPU. In group TPU, PU was followed by TPU; in group SPU, PU was followed by SPU. After each procedure, the urethral orifice cross-section size was estimated by inserting the largest possible urinary catheter without resistance. Residual urethral length was measured both on contrast radiographs and after anatomical dissection. RESULTS In all cats, TPU could be performed following a technically correct PU. The TPU resulted in a 1.5-times longer residual urethral length than SPU, based on contrast radiographs (P = 0.001) and confirmed by anatomical dissection (P <0.001). Relative to the initial urethral length, PU, TPU and SPU resulted in a reduction of 24%, 36% and 56%, respectively. The urethral orifice diameter after TPU did not differ from SPU (P = 1.000), and it was not statistically significantly different between TPU and PU (P = 0.317) or between SPU and PU (P = 0.655). The urethral orifice was located further away from the pubis (P <0.001) and closer to the anus (P <0.001) after TPU than after SPU. CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE Both TPU and SPU are possible revision surgeries following PU. As TPU preserves a significantly longer urethral length and requires less tissue dissection, the risk of urinary tract infections, urinary dermatitis and urinary incontinence might be less following TPU than SPU.

Abstract
A seven-year-old, female ring-tailed lemur was referred for progressive non-ambulatory paraplegia. A computed tomographic (CT) scan of the whole body revealed multifocal lytic lesions involving multiple vertebrae and several pathological vertebral fractures. Necropsy and histopathology identified pyogranulomatous osteomyelitis. The imaging and histopathological findings resemble chronic recurrent multifocal osteomyelitis described in human medicine.

Abstract
Sternal lymph nodes (SLNs) drain a multitude of regions in dogs, including the pectoral and shoulder region, the thoracic wall and mammary glands, the mediastinum, thymus, diaphragm, and the ventral abdominal wall and peritoneal cavity. Neoplastic conditions of these regions can lead to sternal lymphadenopathy. The aim of this study was to assess the most frequent localizations of the primary neoplasia and the most frequent tumor types in dogs with sternal lymphadenopathy. Computed tomographic (CT) characteristics of SLNs in dogs with confirmed neoplasia were also described. For this single-center retrospective descriptive study, dogs with sternal lymphadenopathy and cytological or histological diagnosis of neoplasia were included. Sixty dogs fulfilled the inclusion criteria: 30 (50%) with thoracic neoplasia, 19 (32%) with abdominal neoplasia, 6 (10%) with neoplasia of the front limbs and 5 (8%) with generalized neoplasia. Based on the cytological/histological diagnosis of the primary neoplasia, 31/60 (52%) dogs presented with a sarcoma, 15/60 (25%) with carcinoma, and 14/60 (23%) with round cell tumor. The presence of heterogeneous contrast enhancement was more frequent in dogs with sarcoma, while the concomitant presence of other abnormal lymph nodes was more frequent in dogs with round cell neoplasia. Tumors of different types and in different location can result in sternal lymphadenopathy in dogs. The most frequent in this study were thoracic and abdominal neoplasia, followed by neoplasia of the shoulder region. Sarcoma was the most common tumor type detected in this study, and the main CT characteristic of the SLNs in case of sarcoma was heterogeneous contrast enhancement.

Abstract
Assessing the postoperative surgical success of congenital extrahepatic portosystemic shunt (EHPSS) attenuation can be challenging and involve invasive imaging methods. Elastography is an ultrasound technique that allows qualitative and quantitative estimation of tissue stiffness and has extensively been used in people with liver disease. In recent years, increased interest in this technique has developed in veterinary medicine due to its non-invasive nature, availability, and low cost. The objective of this study was to compare liver stiffness values between dogs with closed EHPSS and those with multiple acquired portosystemic shunts (MAPSS) after gradual surgical attenuation and to assess whether shear wave elastography could be used to determine EHPSS closure. As a secondary objective, measurements obtained from both intercostal and subxiphoidal views were compared. Mean values for the average, median, and maximum two-dimensional shear wave velocities (2D SWV) for the closed EHPSS were 2.88 +/−0.11 m/s; 2.83 +/−0.11 m/s; and 3.75 +/−0.16 m/s, respectively. In the MAPSS dogs, mean values for the average, median, and maximum 2D SWV were 2.77 +/– 0.17 m/s; 2.71 +/– 0.17 m/s; and 3.66 +/−0.24 m/s, respectively. No significant differences in 2D SWV were present between dogs with closed EHPSS and those with MAPSS (P = 0.33; P = 0.33; P = 0.42, respectively). When assessing potential differences between intercostal and subxiphoidal 2D SWV measurements, no effect was observed for the average and median 2D SWV (P = 0.06; P = 0.07, respectively). Yet, a significant difference was identified for the maximum 2D SWV between intercostal 4.00 +/−0.20 m/s and subxiphoidal 3.41 +/−0.17 m/s measurements (P = 0.02). The relevance of this finding is uncertain as many other studies about liver elastography only report mean and not maximum values.

Abstract
Eimeria (E.) stiedae is a protozoan parasite causing hepatic coccidiosis in rabbits. It mostly infects younger animals and causes nonspecific signs like stunted growth, weakness, dehydration, diarrhea and anorexia. Macroscopically, the liver has a typical appearance. It is enlarged, showing firm yellow-white lesions on the surface. These lesions are enlarged bile ducts filled with bile and necrotic debris. Although all diagnostic tools for hepatic coccidiosis in live animals are currently impracticable or inconclusive, ultrasound might be useful for the diagnosis of hepatic coccidiosis. However, the appearance of liver changes associated with E. stiedae on ultrasonography has poorly been described in the literature. In this study, ex-vivo ultrasound of 24 livers was performed, i.e. the livers of two healthy rabbits and 22 livers of rabbits with suspected liver coccidiosis. Hyperechoic lesions of variable size and shape were found in all affected livers. In some of these livers, other signs of hepatic disease were detected: heterogenous liver parenchyma, appearance of hepatomegaly with round edges, gallbladder sludge and thickening of the gallbladder wall.

Abstract
Age estimation in adult dogs can be performed by the radiographic measurement of the tooth pulp cavity, but the technique has hardly been described. In this study, the application of measuring pulp/tooth width ratios (P/T ratios) of the maxillary canine teeth was investigated. Pulp and tooth widths were measured at two locations on 166 maxillary canine teeth of the heads of 84 dog cadavers, using digital extraoral lateral oblique open mouth radiographs. The dogs belonged to different breeds and sexes and had a known age between 194 and 1907 days (approximately 6 months - 5 years). Both at the cemento-enamel junction (CE) and the half-height of the tooth, a comparable non-linear regression with age was demonstrated. Measuring at the CE location was less hindered by wear or superimposition. No statistically significant difference according to sex and breed size and no clinically significant difference according to skull type was found. The highest predictable capacity was found in the youngest dogs until the age of 448 days, of which 84.4% of the canine teeth had a P/T ratio above 0.39. Our results demonstrate that measuring P/T ratios of canine teeth can be used in practice to assign dogs to age categories, with the highest accuracy in young adult dogs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Diagnosing a congenital portosystemic shunt (cPSS) in dogs can be challenging. The current study aims to report diagnostic performance of fasting ammonia (FA), preprandial, postprandial and paired serum bile acids (SBA) and abdominal ultrasound (aUS) in dogs suspected of having a cPSS. METHODS Medical records of dogs suspected of having a cPSS at initial presentation were retrospectively reviewed. RESULTS In total, 192 dogs suspected of cPSS were included: a cPSS was confirmed in 147 dogs and excluded in 45 dogs. FA had the best combined sensitivity and specificity (77.4 and 93.3%, respectively) to diagnose cPSS. The sensitivity and negative predictive value were 100.0% for paired SBA, making paired SBA the best test to exclude cPSS in this population. Sensitivity and specificity of aUS were 80.8 and 90.0%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS In dogs with clinical signs compatible with cPSS, elevated FA is suggestive of cPSS, whereas normal paired SBA makes the presence of a cPSS unlikely. Although aUS is a useful tool to diagnose cPSS, additional imaging is required to visualize cPSS in almost 20% of cases. Furthermore, the localisation of cPSS can be misdiagnosed, especially in case of extrahepatic cPSS that do not insert into the prehepatic vena cava.

Abstract
Background Deficiencies in vitamin A and D and disorders in the vitamin B complex are often present in people with chronic liver diseases. So far, the serum concentrations of these vitamins have not yet been studied in dogs with congenital extrahepatic portosystemic shunts (EHPSS), who also have some degree of liver dysfunction. The objective was to assess serum vitamin concentrations in dogs with EHPSS from diagnosis to complete closure. A prospective cohort study was performed using ten client-owned dogs with EHPSS, closed after gradual surgical attenuation. Serum concentrations of vitamin A, 25-hydroxyvitamin D, folic acid, cobalamin and methylmalonic acid (MMA) were measured at diagnosis prior to institution of medical therapy, prior to surgery, and three months after gradual attenuation and complete closure of the EHPSS. Results At diagnosis, median serum concentrations of vitamin A, 25-hydroxyvitamin D and folic acid were 18.2 μg/dL (8.8 - 79.5 μg/dL), 51.8 ng/mL (19.4 - 109.0 ng/mL), and 8.1 μg/L (5.2 - 14.5 μg/L), respectively, which increased significantly postoperatively (88.3 μg/dL (51.6 - 182.2 μg/dL, P=0.005), 89.6 ng/mL (49.3 - >150.0 ng/mL, P =0.005), and 14.8 μg/L (11.5 - 17.7 μg/L, P <0.001), respectively). Median serum cobalamin concentrations were 735.5 ng/L (470 - 1388 ng/L) at diagnosis and did not significantly decrease postoperatively (P =0.122). Both at diagnosis and three months postoperatively 7/10 dogs had hypercobalaminemia. Conclusions Serum concentrations of vitamin A, 25-hydroxyvitamin D and folic acid significantly increase after surgical attenuation. Nevertheless, persistent hypercobalaminemia is suggestive of ongoing liver dysfunction, despite successful surgery.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Primary congenital hypothyroidism (CH) is a rare endocrine disorder in cats with a largely unknown genetic cause. OBJECTIVES Describe the clinical presentation of CH in 11 affected cats and identify the causal genetic variant. ANIMALS Eleven CH-cats from 10 unrelated families, 11 CH-free family members, 21 unrelated CH-free cats, and 155 unrelated nondiagnosed cats from different breeds. METHODS Case control study of CH-cats and their siblings (2019-2021). Diagnosis was based on low to low-normal serum thyroxine (T4) concentrations, high thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) concentrations and clinical signs compatible with CH. We identified the causal variant using Sanger sequencing, genotyping via PCR-RFLP and variant interpretation using ACMG/AMP guidelines. RESULTS All CH-cats (5 weeks-8 years) had disproportionate dwarfism. A goiter was not palpable in all. Thyroid scintigraphy with radiopertechnetate showed abnormally high uptake by thyroid glands, whereas scintigraphy with radioiodine showed abnormally low uptake, compatible with a defect in iodine organification by thyroid peroxidase (TPO). All cases were homozygous for TPO variant XM_006930524.4:c.430G>A(p.(Gly144Arg)), while none of the CH-free cats were. All sampled parents were heterozygous for this recessive variant. This variant was found in 15 cat breeds with an estimated allele frequency of 9%. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL IMPORTANCE Disproportionate dwarfism, abnormally high TSH and abnormally low to low-normal T4 concentrations are diagnostic for CH in cats. All cases had dyshormonogenesis demonstrated by thyroid scintigraphy. This novel TPO missense variant (not described in humans) causes CH in cats and awareness of it can assist in diagnosis and breeding.

Abstract
Portosystemic shunts (PSS) are rare vascular anomalies in cats. Transsplenic portal scintigraphy (TSPS) can aid in diagnosing PSS in cats. Although the actual performance of the scan remains the same between species, it is questionable whether the generally accepted transit time of seven seconds for small dogs can be applied to cats, thereby influencing shunt fraction (SF) calculation. In this study, normal mean transit time and SF were determined in a population of cats without PSS following two methods established in canine medicine. For both, the mean ± SD transit time was calculated as 6.75 ± 1.58 seconds and 7.40 ± 1.64 seconds respectively, without significant difference between both methods. The results confirmed the validity of the generally used transit time of seven seconds for SF calculation in cats. The average normal SF (± SD) for the cats in this study was 0.73 % (±0.74; range 0.11-2.48%).

Abstract
BACKGROUND Gastric electrical stimulation (GES) has been studied for decades as a promising treatment for obesity. Stimulation pulses with fixed amplitude and pulse width are usually applied, but these have limitations with regard to overcoming habituation to GES and inter-subject variation. This study aims to analyze the efficacy of an adaptive GES protocol for reducing food intake and maintaining lean weight in dogs. METHODS Six beagle dogs were implanted with a remotely programmable gastric stimulator. An adaptive protocol was designed to increase the stimulation energy proportionally to the excess of food consumption, with respect to the dogs' maintenance energy requirements. After surgery and habituation to experimental conditions, the dogs went through both a control and a stimulation period of 4 weeks each, in a randomized order. The stimulation parameters were adapted daily. Body weight, food intake, food intake rate, and postprandial cutaneous electrogastrograms (EGG) were recorded to assess the effect of adaptive GES. RESULTS Adaptive GES decreased food intake and food intake rate (p < 0.05) resulting in weight maintenance. In the absence of GES, the dogs gained weight (p < 0.05). Postprandial EGG dominant frequency was accelerated by GES (p < 0.05). The strategy of adapting the stimulation energy was effective in causing significant mid-term changes. CONCLUSION Adaptive GES is effective for reducing food intake and maintaining lean weight. The proposed adaptive strategy may offer benefits to counter habituation and adapt to inter-subject variation in clinical use of GES for obesity.

Abstract
Shear wave elastography (SWE) has been applied as a noninvasive method for predicting regional lymph node (LN) metastases in human and veterinary patients. However, published studies describing standardized protocols and repeatability of this technique are currently lacking. The objective of this prospective, pilot, observer agreement study was to determine whether different shear wave velocity (SWV) measurements obtained in different regions of presumed normal canine LNs would be repeatable. Two imagers consecutively performed shear wave elastography of submandibular, superficial inguinal, and popliteal LNs in 10, clinically healthy adult dogs. Ten elastograms of each LN were acquired by each imager. In each adequate elastogram, three regions of interest (ROIs) were placed in the softest and stiffest region of the LN. Additionally, one ROI was drawn covering the entire LN. In each ROI, mean, median, and maximum SWVs were calculated. Mean values for the mean, median, and maximum SWVs varied from 2.33 to 3.10 m/s, 2.32 to 3.10 m/s, and 2.61 to 4.09 m/s, respectively. Intra- and interobserver agreements were acceptable. Superficial inguinal LNs demonstrated the highest intra- and interobserver agreement, followed by the popliteal and the submandibular LNs, respectively. Using the different measurements (mean, median, or maximum SWVs) had no significant effect on the intra- and interobserver variability, neither did the region (softest, stiffest, or entire LN). Findings indicated that all evaluated measurements and regions could be used to obtain reliable elastography data of presumed normal canine LNs. Clinical trials in dogs with cancer are necessary to compare SWVs of metastatic LNs with the reported SWVs and evaluate whether various measurements and regions can also be used in metastatic LNs.

Abstract
Doorgaans worden bacteriële urineweginfecties bij kleine huisdieren beduidend langer behandeld met antibiotica dan bij mensen en het vermoeden bestaat dat urineweginfecties bij honden en katten volgens de oorspronkelijke internationale richtlijnen uit 2011 te lang worden behandeld. Naast kosten voor de eigenaar en mogelijke bijwerkingen voor het dier brengt dit het risico op de ontwikkeling van antibioticumresisentie bij dier en mens met zich mee. In 2019 zijn er nieuwe richtlijnen van de “International Society for Companion Animal Infectious Diseases” verschenen over de diagnose en behandeling van bacteriële urineweginfecties bij honden en katten. Het doel van dit artikel is om een overzicht te geven van de aangewezen behandeling (i. e. keuze van het antibioticum en duur van de therapie) bij de verschillende types bacteriële urine-weginfectie bij kleine huisdieren. Ook worden praktische tips meegegeven voor het definitief vaststellen van een urineweginfectie. Zo wordt in de eerste plaats zekerheid verkregen over de aanwezigheid van een bacteriële infectie als oorzaak van de aanwezige klachten en kan vervolgens ook een weloverwogen keuze worden gemaakt qua antibioticum, gebaseerd op het type urineweginfectie en het antibiogram. Ook de rol van niet-steroïdale ontstekingsremmers in de behandeling van lagere-urinewegklachten, in afwachting van het resultaat van een urinecultuur, wordt besproken. Tot slot is het belangrijk te beseffen dat niet elke positieve urinecultuur noodzakelijkerwijs een antibioticumtherapie inhoudt.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the intra- and inter-observer variability of computed tomographic measurements of linear prostate dimensions in neutered dogs without signs of prostatic disease, to determine potential associations between prostatic parameters and body weight or age and to provide reference ranges. Length, width and height of the prostate gland were measured in 62 neutered dogs with no signs of prostatic disease by three observers with different levels of training. Statistically significant positive associations were found between all prostatic parameters and body weight and between all prostatic parameters and age at castration, but not with age. Formulae allowing the calculation of the expected values for prostatic parameters based on body weight are provided [length = 15.3 + body weight (BW) × 0.3; height = 9.7 + BW × 0.16; width = 9.5 + BW × 0.2]. These may represent a useful tool for computed tomographic evaluation of the size of the prostate in neutered dogs. Subjective evaluations of the morphological appearance of the prostate gland are also provided.

Abstract
The sesamoid bone in the tendon of the m. abductor digiti primi longus is considered present in most dog breeds and is described to be radiologically detectable at the level of the carpus from the age of 4 months. However, an extensive investigation of this sesamoid bone has not been conducted before. The aim of this study was therefore to determine its prevalence in different dog breeds, to describe its histological development, and to determine the age at which it becomes radiologically visible. The prevalence of the sesamoid bone was assessed on radiographic images of the carpus or by dissection of the carpal region in 743 adult dogs of 115 breeds. Its development was studied by dissection and histological analysis in 45 puppies and its timing of radiological appearance was evaluated in 209 puppies. At least one sesamoid bone was present in all adult dogs, except for 14 dogs of six breeds of predominantly the small breed category. The lowest prevalence rate of 38.46% was exhibited in the French bulldog. The histological development could be divided into five stages. The first radiographic appearance corresponded to the coalescence of smaller ossification centers into one big nucleus (stage 4). The mean time of radiographic appearance was 108.4 days. This study provides extensive data on the prevalence and timing of the radiographic appearance of a sesamoid at the carpus of the dog. The data on radiographic appearance may be helpful in the age estimation of puppies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Dogs with portosystemic shunts have an altered blood amino acid profile, with an abnormal branched-chained amino acid (BCAA)-to-aromatic amino acid (AAA) ratio being the most common abnormality. Different liver diseases have distinctive amino acid profiles. OBJECTIVES Determine the changes in plasma amino acid profiles in dogs with extrahepatic portosystemic shunts (EHPSS) from diagnosis to complete closure. ANIMALS Ten client-owned dogs with EHPSS closed after surgical attenuation. METHODS Prospective cohort study. Medical treatment was instituted in dogs diagnosed with EHPSS. At least 4 weeks later, gradual surgical attenuation was performed. Three months postoperatively, EHPSS closure was confirmed by transsplenic portal scintigraphy. Clinical signs were scored and blood was taken before institution of medical treatment, at time of surgery, and 3 months postoperatively. At the end of the study, the plasma amino acid profiles were analyzed in batch. RESULTS The median BCAA-to-AAA ratio was extremely low (0.6) at time of diagnosis and remained low (0.5) at time of surgery, despite the fact that median neurological score significantly improved from 22 to 2 after starting medical treatment (P = .04). Three months after surgical attenuation, a significantly higher BCAA-to-AAA ratio (1.5) was observed (P < .001). CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL IMPORTANCE Medical treatment does not improve the BCAA-to-AAA ratio in dogs with EHPSS, despite substantial clinical improvement. Although the ratio significantly increased after EHPSS closure, it was still indicative of moderate to severe hepatic dysfunction in all dogs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Liver-type fatty acid-binding protein (L-FABP) and neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) are candidate biomarkers for the detection of early chronic kidney disease (CKD) in cats. OBJECTIVE To evaluate urinary and serum L-FABP and NGAL concentrations in CKD cats and in hyperthyroid cats before and after radioiodine (131 I) treatment. ANIMALS Nine CKD cats, 45 healthy cats and hyperthyroid cats at 3 time points including before (T0, n = 49), 1 month (T1, n = 49), and 11 to 29 months after (T2, n = 26) 131 I treatment. METHODS Cross-sectional and longitudinal study. Serum L-FABP (sL-FABP), serum NGAL (sNGAL), urinary L-FABP (uL-FABP), and urinary NGAL (uNGAL) were compared between the 3 groups and between hyperthyroid cats before and after treatment. Data are reported as median (min-max). RESULTS CKD cats had significantly higher sL-FABP (13.50 [3.40-75.60] ng/ml) and uL-FABP/Cr (4.90 [0.97-2139.44] µg/g) than healthy cats (4.25 [1.34-23.25] ng/ml; P = .01 and 0.46 [0.18-9.13] µg/g; P < .001, respectively). Hyperthyroid cats at T0 had significantly higher uL-FABP/Cr (0.94 [0.15-896.00] µg/g) than healthy cats (P < .001), thereafter uL-FABP/Cr significantly decreased at T2 (0.54 [0.10-76.41] µg/g, P = .002). For the detection of CKD, uL-FABP/Cr had 100% (95% confidence interval [CI], 66.4-100.0) sensitivity and 93.2% (95% CI, 81.3-98.6) specificity. There were no significant differences in sNGAL and uNGAL/Cr between the 3 groups. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL IMPORTANCE L-FABP, but not NGAL, is a potential biomarker for the detection of early CKD in cats. Utility of uL-FABP to predict azotemia after treatment in hyperthyroid cats remains unknown.

Abstract
Symmetric dimethylarginine (SDMA) is a promising renal marker that correlates well with the glomerular filtration rate and could allow earlier detection of impaired renal function. The main objectives of this study were to assess the long-term variability of SDMA in healthy dogs and examine the influence of an increased body fat percentage on the level of SDMA. Sixteen lean Beagles were randomly assigned to the control group or weight-change group in age- and gender-matched pairs. The energy intake of the control group (n = 8) was strictly regulated to maintain an ideal body weight for 83 weeks, while the weight-change group (n = 8) was fed to induce weight gain (week 0–47), to maintain stable excessive body weight (week 47–56) and to lose weight (week 56–83), consecutively. At 8 specified time points, the body condition score, body composition, glomerular filtration rate, serum concentration of SDMA and creatinine were analyzed. In the control group, the within-subject coefficient of variation, between-subject coefficient of variation, reference change value (type I error = 5%) and index of individuality were 0.16, 0.22, 0.43 and 0.73, respectively. The control group and weight-change group did not differ significantly in SDMA concentration. SDMA showed a significant negative association (coefficient = -0.07) with body fat percentage (p<0.01) in the weight-change group and a significant positive association (coefficient = 7.79) with serum creatinine (p<0.01) in the entire study population. In conclusion, SDMA concentration has high long-term stability in healthy adult dogs. For the evaluation of SDMA concentrations, subject-specific reference values are preferred over a population-based reference value seen their higher sensitivity. Moreover, an increased body fat percentage does seem to affect the serum SDMA concentration of otherwise healthy dogs, but its clinical relevance has to be clarified in further research.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Liver function tests do not always normalize despite successful attenuation of extrahepatic portosystemic shunts (EHPSS). OBJECTIVES Assess the lidocaine/monoethylglycylxylidide (MEGX) test to determine liver perfusion after EHPSS closure. ANIMALS Twenty dogs with EHPSS. METHODS A prospective cohort study was performed and all dogs were tested at diagnosis, 1, 3, and 6 months postoperatively. After collecting a baseline blood sample (T0), 1 mg/kg body weight of lidocaine was injected intravenously. Fifteen (T15) and 30 minutes (T30) later, blood was collected. Plasma concentrations of lidocaine and its metabolites MEGX and glycylxylidide (GX) were determined, using a high-performance liquid chromatography with electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry method. Three months postoperatively, transsplenic portal scintigraphy was performed to determine EHPSS closure. RESULTS At T15, median MEGX concentrations were higher in dogs with closed EHPSS compared to diagnosis (33.73 ng/mL [21.11-66.44 ng/mL] vs 13.74 ng/mL [7.25-21.93 ng/mL]; P < .001), but were not different (12.28 ng/mL [10.62-23.17 ng/mL] vs 13.74 ng/mL [7.25-21.93 ng/mL]) in dogs with persistent shunting. Sensitivity to determine shunt closure for MEGX at T15 was 96.2% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 78.4-99.8) and specificity 82.8% (95% CI: 63.5-93.5). CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL IMPORTANCE The lidocaine/MEGX test is a promising, rapid, and noninvasive blood test that seems helpful to differentiate dogs with closed EHPSS and dogs with persistent shunting after gradual attenuation.

Abstract
Current liver function tests used in dogs do not consistently normalise after successful surgical attenuation of portosystemic shunts (PSS). Serum hyaluronic acid (sHA) concentrations in dogs with PSS are reported to be higher at diagnosis than in healthy dogs. The objective of this study was to assess sHA as a marker of liver perfusion by measuring sHA concentrations in dogs before and after gradual surgical attenuation of extrahepatic (EH)PSS and by determining whether sHA concentrations could differentiate closed EHPSS from persistent shunting. Specificity of sHA was assessed by comparing sHA concentrations in dogs with EHPSS to those in dogs with other liver diseases. Twenty dogs with EHPSS had sHA concentrations measured at diagnosis, 1, 3, and 6 months postoperatively. In addition, sHA concentrations were determined in 10 dogs with other liver diseases. At EHPSS diagnosis, median sHA concentration was 335.6 ng/mL (43.0-790.7 ng/mL). All dogs had a significant decrease in sHA concentrations from 1 month postoperatively onwards (P < 0.05), regardless of surgical outcome. At all postoperative follow-up visits, there was a significant difference between the median sHA concentration in dogs with closed EHPSS vs. those with persistent shunting (P < 0.05). Median sHA concentration in dogs with other liver diseases was 89.8 ng/mL (22.9-160.0 ng/mL), which was significantly lower than dogs with EHPSS at diagnosis (P < 0.001). In conclusion, sHA is a promising non-invasive biomarker that can help to determine liver perfusion after surgical attenuation of EHPSS. In addition, sHA could potentially be used to differentiate dogs with EHPSS from dogs with other liver diseases.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to document survival, complications and risk factors for the development of complications and mortality prior to discharge after placement of a subcutaneous ureteral bypass (SUB) device in cats. METHODS The medical records of cats with SUB placement between January 2016 and August 2019 were retrospectively analysed. The development of complications (overall, intraoperative, perioperative, short- and long-term complications) and risk factors for mortality prior to discharge were statistically assessed with univariate binary logistic regression. All variables with a P value ⩽0.10 in the univariate analysis were assessed in a multivariate model. Variables were significant if P <0.05. RESULTS Twenty-four cats were included; 12 (50.0%) received a unilateral SUB, 11 (45.8%) a bilateral nephrostomy tube with single cystostomy catheter and the remaining cat (4.2%) two unilateral SUBs. Nearly 80% of the cats developed complications, ranging from mild to fatal, including (partial) SUB obstruction (33.3% of complications), lower urinary tract infection (20.8%), pyelonephritis (20.8%) and sterile cystitis (12.5%). Five cats (20.8%) died prior to discharge. Six cats (25.0%) underwent revision surgery. The overall median survival time (MST) was 274 days (range 1-311 days). Complications were most common in the long-term period (14/16 cats), followed by the short-term (9/18 cats), perioperative (10/23 cats) and intraoperative (4/24 cats) periods. Older cats had an increased risk for developing perioperative complications (P = 0.045) and were less likely to survive to discharge (P = 0.033). An increased haematocrit at presentation was a risk factor for the occurrence of short-term complications (P = 0.03). CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE Although complications similar to those previously described were observed, the complication rate was higher and the MST shorter than previously reported in cats undergoing SUB placement. Despite good short-term survival, the development of complications may necessitate regular and intensive control visits. Owners that consider SUB placement should be informed that follow-up can be strenuous and expensive.

Abstract
A six-year-old, female, neutered domestic shorthair cat was presented with chronic weight loss and a two-day history of partial anorexia and lethargy. Abdominal ultrasonography revealed a regional thickening of the duodenal wall with loss of normal layering, a normally walled segmentally dilated distal aspect of the common bile duct containing slightly hyperechoic bile, and a mild to moderately enlarged major duodenal papilla. Based on the ultrasound examination, the primary differential diagnosis was a peripapillary duodenal neoplastic or less likely, an inflammatory or infectious process with secondary extrahepatic biliary obstruction. Postmortem examination revealed a duodenal, peripapillary adenocarcinoma with metastasis into the liver and lymph nodes, and external compressive obstruction of cystic- and common bile duct.

Abstract
A six-year-old, male, castrated European shorthair cat was presented due to a lifelong history of sneezing, nasal discharge, open-mouth breathing, stertor and vestibular problems. Clinical examination showed absence of airflow through the nostrils. Computed tomography of the head revealed an infiltrative soft tissue attenuating mass in the left nasal cavity, nasopharynx and the left frontal sinus. All of these locations could be successfully accessed through ventral rhinotomy and the mass was completely removed. Histological examination identified it as an inflammatory polyp. All respiratory and neurological symptoms disappeared, and two-and-a-half years after surgery, the cat was still without complaints.

Abstract
Background Information on scintigraphy findings in dogs with thyroid neoplasia is scarce. The use of single‐photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) could improve detection of metastatic disease. Hypothesis/Objectives To describe planar and SPECT imaging findings in dogs with thyroid tumors, and to compare SPECT and thoracic radiography for metastasis detection. Animals Sixty‐eight dogs with thyroid neoplasia. Methods Retrospective study, search of medical records for dogs with thyroid neoplasia (2008‐2018). Results Thyroid scintigraphy was available from 68 dogs, of which 6 presented after surgical resection. Radionuclide uptake was increased in 56% of dogs, decreased in 24%, and comparable to that of the salivary glands in 13%. The remainder had multiple masses with variable uptake. A homogeneous uptake pattern was present in 16% and a heterogeneous uptake pattern in 73%. In 11% (all dogs with multiple masses), various uptake patterns were present. Thyroid tumors were well delineated in 55%. There was a significant association between hormone status and uptake pattern (P = .009), with a heterogeneous uptake pattern in the majority of euthyroid dogs, and hormone status and tumor circumscription (P = .003), with well‐circumscribed margins in the majority of hypothyroid and hyperthyroid dogs. Thoracic SPECT imaging was available in 39 dogs and identified metastatic lesions in 15 dogs. Thoracic radiographs were performed in 14 of these dogs, and detected metastases in 3 dogs. Conclusions and Clinical Importance SPECT imaging is a viable imaging technique to screen for thoracic metastasis and wider use of SPECT imaging is recommended in dogs with thyroid neoplasia.

Abstract
This pilot study aimed at evaluating whether closed-incision negative pressure wound therapy (ciNPWT) has an effect on seroma formation and wound healing following forequarter amputation in dogs above 20 kg. Twelve client-owned dogs weighing more than 20 kg, presented for forequarter amputation, were randomly assigned after surgery into two groups (six ciNPWT and six controls with soft-padded bandage, both bandages applied for three days). A clinical and ultrasonographic control (newly developed scoring system) was performed at bandage removal (three days postoperatively) and ten days, postoperatively. A postoperative seroma was present in 4/6 dogs in the ciNPWT group and in 5/6 dogs in the control group. There were no apparent differences in the ultrasonographic scores or subcutis measurements at three versus ten days, postoperatively. The results of this pilot trial do not support expansion to a larger-scale study evaluating ciNPWT after forequarter amputation in dogs.

Abstract
Tumor-targeting contrast agents may facilitate resection of solid neoplasms during fluorescence-guided surgery. Preliminary safety and imaging efficacy of the near-infrared fluorescent probe DA364 were evaluated during surgical resection of spontaneous solid tumors in 24 dogs. Intra-operative imaging was performed in situ and on excised specimens to evaluate fluorescence intensities of tumor and adjacent tissues. After standard-of-care tumor resection, the wound bed was imaged again, and additional tissue was excised if residual fluorescence was detected. DA364 was well tolerated after intravenous administration. The median tumor-to-background ratio in situ for mammary tumors, mast cell tumors and sarcomas was 1.8 (range 1.2–3.9), 2.2 (range 1.0–5.6), and 4.2 (range 2.0–4.3), respectively. Qualitative intra-operative tumor identification was feasible in half of the cases. Remaining fluorescence was detected in four wound beds that contained residual disease, and in11 tumor-free wound beds, confirmed by histopathology. Overall, DA364 did not raise safety concerns and showed accumulation in different types of spontaneous tumors, showing potential to pinpoint residual disease. Larger clinical trials are necessary to select accurate dosing and imaging protocols for specific indications to evaluate the sensitivity and specificity of the agent.

Abstract
Honden met een portosystemische shunt (PSS) vertonen vaak urinaire afwijkingen. In deze retrospectieve studie werd de prevalentie van urolithiasis en andere urinewegklachten secundair aan extrahepatische (EH)PSS nagegaan vanaf het optreden van de eerste klachten tot en met de dag van de chirurgische correctie van de EHPSS. Enerzijds werd 67% van de onderzochte honden aangeboden met urinewegklachten die rechtstreeks (39%) of waarschijnlijk (28%) verband hielden met EHPSS. Zo werden sommige honden chirurgisch behandeld voor urolithiasis, waarna via kwantitatieve steenanalyse ammoniumbiuraat-urolieten vastgesteld werden, wat de aanwezigheid van een onderliggende PSS deed vermoeden. Anderzijds bleek 77% van de honden zonder urinewegklachten toch abnormaliteiten te vertonen op medische beeldvorming en/ of het urinewegonderzoek. In totaal werden er bij 70,4% van de honden urolieten vastgesteld. In dit onderzoek wordt het belang aangetoond van het uitvoeren van een volledig urineonderzoek aangevuld met medische beeldvorming van het urinaire stelsel bij alle honden met EHPSS. Daarnaast wordt de meerwaarde van een kwantitatieve steenanalyse beklemtoond, opdat bij aanwezigheid van ammoniumbiuraat aan een mogelijke PSS wordt gedacht.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Near-infrared fluorescence (NIRF) imaging is a relatively novel technique that can aid surgeons during intraoperative tumour identification. METHODS Nine canine oncology patients (five mammary gland tumours, three mast cell tumours and one melanoma) received intravenous indocyanine green (ICG). After 24 hours, tumours were resected and fluorescence intensities of tumours and surroundings were evaluated. Additional wound bed tissue was resected if residual fluorescence was present after tumour resection. Ex vivo, fluorescence-guided dissection was performed to separate tumour from surrounding tissue. RESULTS Intraoperative NIRF-guided tumour delineation was feasible in four out of nine dogs. Wound bed imaging after tumour removal identified nine additional fluorescent lesions, of which four contained tumour tissue. One of these four true positive in vivo lesions was missed by standard-of-care inspection. Ex vivo fluorescence-guided tumour dissection showed a sensitivity of 72 per cent and a specificity of 80 per cent in discriminating between tumour and surrounding tissue. CONCLUSION The value of ICG for intraoperative tumour delineation seems more limited than originally thought. Although NIRF imaging using ICG did identify remaining tumour tissue in the wound bed, a high false positive rate was also observed.

Abstract
Early detection of obesity-related glomerulopathy in humans is challenging as it might not be detected by routine biomarkers of kidney function. This study's aim was to use novel kidney biomarkers and contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) to evaluate the effect of obesity development and weight-loss on kidney function, perfusion, and injury in dogs. Sixteen healthy lean adult beagles were assigned randomly but age-matched to a control group (CG) (n = 8) fed to maintain a lean body weight (BW) for 83 weeks; or to a weight-change group (WCG) (n = 8) fed the same diet to induce obesity (week 0-47), to maintain stable obese weight (week 47-56) and to lose BW (week 56-83). At 8 time points, values of systolic blood pressure (sBP); serum creatinine (sCr); blood urea nitrogen (BUN); serum cystatin C (sCysC); urine protein-to-creatinine ratio (UPC); and urinary biomarkers of glomerular and tubular injury were measured. Glomerular filtration rate (GFR) and renal perfusion using CEUS were assayed (except for week 68). For CEUS, intensity- and time-related parameters representing blood volume and velocity were derived from imaging data, respectively. At 12-22% weight-gain, cortical time-to-peak, representing blood velocity, was shorter in the WCG vs. the CG. After 37% weight-gain, sCysC, UPC, glomerular and tubular biomarkers of injury, urinary immunoglobulin G and urinary neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin, respectively, were higher in the WCG. sBP, sCr, BUN and GFR were not significantly different. After 23% weight-loss, all alterations were attenuated. Early weight-gain in dogs induced renal perfusion changes measured with CEUS, without hyperfiltration, preceding increased urinary protein excretion with potential glomerular and tubular injury. The combined use of routine biomarkers of kidney function, CEUS and site-specific urinary biomarkers might be valuable in assessing kidney health of individuals at risk for obesity-related glomerulopathy in a non-invasive manner.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The first objective was to assess correlation between free thyroxine (fT4) measurements by equilibrium dialysis (fT4ED; Antech Diagnostics) and a chemiluminescent enzyme immunoassay (fT4CEIA; IMMULITE 2000 Veterinary Free T4 [Siemens Healthcare Diagnostics Products]) in hyperthyroid, otherwise healthy, cats before (T0), and 1 month (T1) and 11-23 months (T2) after radioactive iodine (131I) therapy. The second objective was to determine correlation between thyroid status based on fT4 (by both techniques) and the gold standard, thyroid scintigraphy. METHODS Thyroid status, including thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), total thyroxine (TT4) and fT4 serum concentrations, were assessed in 45 client-owned hyperthyroid cats before (T0), and 1 month (T1) and 11-23 months (T2) after 131I therapy. fT4 was determined by a chemiluminescent enzyme immunoassay (CEIA) and equilibrium dialysis (ED). Quantitative thyroid scintigraphy (with sodium 99m-Tc-pertechnetate) was performed at T2. RESULTS Spearman correlation between fT4CEIA and fT4ED was 0.81, 0.88 and 0.79 at T0, T1 and T2, respectively. fT4CEIA was consistently lower than fT4ED, with a median difference of -5.4 pmol/l (P <0.001) and -4.9 pmol/l (P <0.0001) at T1 and T2, respectively. At T2, all cats were identified as euthyroid based on thyroid scintigraphy. None of the cats were identified as being hypothyroid, based on serum TT4 and TSH measurements. Nine of 22 (40.9%) cats had an fT4CEIA below the reference interval (RI) at T2, whereas only 2/22 (9.1%) cats had an fT4ED concentration below the RI at T2. CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE Good correlation exists between both assays at T1 and T2, but a significant systematic difference is noted at both time points. This could be an indication for reconsideration of the current RI, although further studies are warranted for assessing test accuracy (in otherwise healthy cats and cats with non-thyroidal illness). At this time, routine use of fT4CEIA after 131I therapy is not advised in feline patients.

Abstract
Surgical site infections (SSI) are common complications with a prevalence of 0.8 to 18%. Many risk factors, such as patient, environmental and treatment factors can contribute to the development of SSI. Two dogs that developed a SSI after forelimb amputation are discussed. The first dog was presented with an open comminuted intra-articular fracture of the right elbow. The second dog was diagnosed with a soft-tissue sarcoma at the right elbow. Perioperative cefazolin was administered in both patients. Only in the first patient, antimicrobial therapy was continued in the postoperative period. Both dogs developed an SSI within four to five days postoperatively. Yet, prophylactic antimicrobials can help to prevent SSI, provided that the correct antimicrobial is used at the correct dose, at the right time and given IV. Factors, such as hypothermia, violating the Halsted’s principles and the number of people present in the theater may increase the risk of SSI. Besides the meticulous use of antimicrobials, perioperative management is thus also important in SSI prevention.

Abstract
Background Measurement of serum creatinine (sCr) and urea nitrogen fail to detect decreased renal function in many hyperthyroid cats because of low muscle mass and glomerular hyperfiltration of affected cats. Serum symmetric dimethylarginine (sSDMA) is an earlier and more sensitive renal biomarker than sCr. Objective Evaluate sSDMA as a biomarker of renal function in hyperthyroid cats before (T0) and 1 month after (T1) radioiodine (131I) treatment. Animals Forty‐seven client‐owned hyperthyroid nonazotemic cats were evaluated at T0 and T1. Methods A prospective study in which sCr and sSDMA concentrations were determined in 47 hyperthyroid cats at T0 and at T1. Glomerular filtration rate (GFR) was estimated at T0 and T1 in 10 of these 47 cats using plasma exogenous creatinine clearance test. Results Serum SDMA was elevated (>14 μg/dL) in 6 of 47 cats at T0 and normalized after treatment in 4 of those cats. All cats remained nonazotemic after treatment. In 10 cats in which GFR was measured, correlation between GFR and sSDMA was low and not significant (τb = −0.35, P = .17 at T0 and τb = −.22, P = .41 at T1), whereas correlation between GFR and sCr was moderate and significant (τb = −0.52, P < .05 at T0 and τb = −.53, P = <.05 at T1). Conclusions and Clinical Importance Careful interpretation of mildly increased sSDMA with normal sCr in hyperthyroid cats is warranted as sSDMA values might normalize after resolution of hyperthyroidism in some cats. In this population of hyperthyroid cats, sSDMA was poorly correlated with GFR.

Abstract
In this case report, a seven-year-old, male, castrated Landseer presented with chronic respiratory distress, occasional coughing, dysphonia and exercise intolerance is described. The stress caused by transportation and the physical examination rendered the dog severely dyspneic and cyanotic. At that moment, the core body temperature was increased up to 42.5 °C. Based on the clinical signs, laryngeal paralysis causing heat stroke was the most likely diagnosis. The dog was anesthetized and intensive temperature control methods, like active cooling and fluid therapy, were applied. As soon as the dog was cardiovascularly stable, emergency treatment for laryngeal paralysis was performed. As a result of timely intervention, the dog recovered completely without any persisting complications.

Abstract
Sentinel lymph node (SLN) mapping is a valuable and crucial diagnostic procedure in staging malignancies. We compared two non-invasive techniques, near-infrared (NIR) fluorescence imaging and contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS), to identify the SLNs in three superficial anatomical regions in an animal model. Six healthy laboratory dogs were included in a proof-of-concept trial. A NIR fluorescent dye (Indocyanine Green) and microbubbles (Sonovue) were consecutively injected subdermally in the Inguinal, axillary and popliteal region to map the SLNs. Transcutaneous NIR fluorescence imaging identified SLNs in 17 out of a total of 18 occasions. CEUS identified SLNs in all regions (18/18). Whereas NIR fluorescence imaging performed better in the visualization of the afferent lymphatic tract, CEUS demonstrated different filling patterns of the SLNs, a feature potentially critical for the concept of SLN mapping in cancer patients. Both NIR fluorescence imaging and CEUS are safe, non-invasive, practical and accurate methods to perform real-time transcutaneous SLN mapping with potential in a clinical setting.

Abstract
Contrast-enhanced ultrasound may be helpful for detecting early renal microvascular damage and dysfunction in dogs. However, before this noninvasive imaging method can be tested as an early-stage screening tool in clinical patients, an improved understanding of long-term variation in healthy animals is needed. In this prospective, secondary, longitudinal, serial measurements study, variability of contrast-enhanced ultrasound renal perfusion parameters was described for eight healthy dogs, using seven time points and a period of 83 weeks. Dogs were sedated with butorphanol (0.4 mg/kg), and contrast-enhanced ultrasound of each kidney was performed after an intravenous bolus injection of a microbubble contrast agent (0.04 mL/kg). Time-intensity curves were created from regions-of-interest drawn in the renal cortex and medulla. Intensity-related parameters representing blood volume and time-related parameters representing blood velocity were determined. A random-effects model using restricted maximum likelihood was used to estimate variance components. Within-dog coefficient of variation was defined as the ratio of the standard deviation over the mean. Time-related parameters such as time-to-peak, rise and fall time had lowest within-dog variability. Intensity-related parameters such as peak enhancement, wash-in and wash-out area under the curve, total area under the curve, and wash-in and washout rates had high within-dog variability (coefficient of variation > 45%). Authors therefore recommend the use of time-related parameters for future studies of renal perfusion. Within-dog variability for bilateral kidney measurements was extremely low, therefore contrast-enhanced ultrasound may be particularly useful for detecting unilateral changes in renal perfusion. Future studies are needed to compare contrast-enhanced ultrasound findings in healthy dogs versus dogs with renal disease.
