Abstract
Per and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are persistent compounds that are massively used in industry, consumer goods and fire-fighting foams. Soil contamination by PFAS is a major environmental concern, and there is a lack of knowledge on both their ecotoxicological mechanisms and the concentrations that induce adverse effects especially to non-target organisms, particularly in the case of PFAS mixtures. This study contributes to filling these gaps by assessing and modelling the effects of PFAS (in single and in mixtures for PFOS and PFOA at different environmental doses) on juvenile endogeic earthworms of a common species in European soils (Aporrectodea caliginosa) at different levels of biological organization (sub-individual and individual). The results showed for the first time combined strong ecotoxicological effects of PFAS on earthworm survival, integumental integrity, growth, sexual maturity and on genomic stability notably with the induction of DNA breaks associated with no abnormal oxidative DNA-lesion levels. Our results demonstrated significant effects at 0.3 mg kg-1 and additive effects in case of mixtures.

Abstract
Changes in ocean circulation and the biological carbon pump have been implicated as the drivers behind the rise in atmospheric CO2 across the last deglaciation; however, the processes involved remain uncertain. Previous records have hinted at a partitioning of deep ocean ventilation across the two major intervals of atmospheric CO2 rise, but the consequences of differential ventilation on the Si cycle has not been explored. Here we present three new records of silicon isotopes in diatoms and sponges from the Southern Ocean that together show increased Si supply from deep mixing during the deglaciation with a maximum during the Younger Dryas (YD). We suggest Antarctic sea ice and Atlantic overturning conditions favoured abyssal ocean ventilation at the YD and marked an interval of Si cycle reorganisation. By regulating the strength of the biological pump, the glacial-interglacial shift in the Si cycle may present an important control on Pleistocene CO2 concentrations.

Abstract
Crops have different strategies to acquire poorly-available soil phosphorus (P) which are dependent on their architectural, morphological, and physiological root traits, but their capacity to enhance P acquisition varies with the type of fertilizer applied. The objective of this study was to examine how P-acquisition strategies of three main crops are affected by the application of sewage sludges, compared with a mineral P fertilizer. We carried out a 3-months greenhouse pot experiment and compared the response of P-acquisition traits among wheat, barley and canola in a soil amended with three sludges or a mineral P fertilizer. Results showed that the P-acquisition strategy differed among crops. Compared with canola, wheat and barley had a higher specific root length and a greater root carboxylate release and they acquired as much P from sludge as from mineral P. By contrast, canola shoot P content was greater with sludge than with mineral P. This was attributed to a higher root-released acid phosphatase activity which promoted the mineralization of sludge-derived P-organic. This study showed that contrasted P-acquisition strategies of crops allows increased use of renewable P resources by optimizing combinations of crop and the type of P fertilizer applied within the cropping system.

Abstract
Objective: Analyses of motivational and volitional determinants of applying for psychosomatic rehabilitation Methods: Determinants of a rehabilitation request were assessed by a questionnaire in 2013. Applications for psychosomatic rehabilitation measures until the end of 2014 were extracted from administrative data records. Included were employees with mental disorders. Results: Only 55 of 974 persons requested a rehabilitation measure. The intention to apply for a rehabilitation measure was strongest determined by self-efficacy and family and professional support. Planning was explained by intention and to a lesser extent by family and physician support. Persons with higher planning scores were more likely to apply for a rehabilitation measure. Physician support also increased the likelihood of a rehabilitation request. Conclusion: The analyses identified determinants of rehabilitation claims that are modifiable. This gives opportunities to support rehabilitation claims. However, the contribution of these factors to explain rehabilitation requests is only limited.

Abstract
We measure the dispersion coefficient through homogeneous bead or sand packings at different flow rates from direct magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) visualizations of the transport characteristics of a pulse of paramagnetic nanoparticles. Through two-dimensional imaging we observe homogeneous dispersion inside the sample, but we show that entrance effects may induce significant radial heterogeneities, which would affect the interpretation of the breakthrough curve. Another MRI approach then provides quantitative measurements of the evolution in time of the longitudinal particle distribution in the sample. These data can be analyzed to deduce the coefficient of dispersion independently of entrance effects. The values obtained for this "effective" dispersion coefficient are almost ten times lower than the commonly accepted values.

Endocrine control of canine mammary neoplasms: serum reproductive hormone levels and tissue expression of steroid hormone, prolactin and growth hormone receptors. BMC Vet Res 2015; 11:235. Abstract
Background Neoplasms of the mammary gland are among the most common diseases in female domestic dogs (Canis familiaris). It is assumed that reproductive hormones influence tumorigenesis in this species, although the precise role of the endocrine milieu and reproductive state is subject to continuing discussion. In line with this, a recent systematic review of available data on the development of mammary neoplasms revealed weak evidence for risk reduction after neutering and an effect of age at neutering. Investigation of several hormone receptors has revealed decreased expression of estrogen receptor-alpha (ERα, ESR1), progesterone (P4) receptor (PGR), prolactin (PRL) receptor (PRLR) and growth hormone receptor (GHR) associated with neoplastic differentiation of mammary tissues. In other studies, increased levels of estrogens, progesterone and prolactin were found in serum and/or tissue homogenates of dogs with malignant neoplasms. However, the association between these entities within one animal population was never previously examined. Therefore, this study investigated the association between circulating serum concentrations of estradiol-17β, progesterone and prolactin, and gene expression of ERα (ESR1), ERβ (ESR2), PGR, PRLR, PRL and GHR, with respect to reproductive state (spayed vs. intact) and cycle stage (anestrus vs. diestrus). Additionally, the expression of E-cadherin (CDH-1) was evaluated as a possible indicator of metastatic potential. Results For all receptors, the lowest gene expression was found in malignant tumors compared to normal tissues of affected dogs. Steroid levels were not influenced by their corresponding receptor expression in mammary neoplasms, but increased PRL levels were negatively associated with low PRLR gene expression in malignant tumors. The expression of CDH-1 was influenced by tumor malignancy and cycle stage, i.e., the highest gene expression was found in benign mammary tumors in diestrous dogs compared to normal and malignant mammary tissues of anestrous and spayed dogs. Conclusions Herein, it has been confirmed that transformation towards malignant neoplasms is associated with significant reduction of gene expression of particular hormone receptors. Only PRLR in malignant tumors seems to be influenced by circulating PRL levels. In dogs, CDH-1 can be used as a prognostic factor; its expression, however, in benign tumors is influenced by cycle stage. Abstract
OBJECTIVE To compare the perception of benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH) between patients and general practitioners (GPs) in terms of severity and evolution of symptoms and medication adherence. METHODOLOGY A cross-sectional observational study was performed in France in a sample of GPs who included patients for whom a BPH treatment was prescribed. Data were collected on patient and GP characteristics, diagnosis, BPH management, severity and evolution of symptoms and medication adherence. RESULTS One thousand and ninety-eight patients were recruited by 247 GPs. In 87.4% of cases, diagnosis was performed by GPs. Among them, 82.7% of patients were treated by monotherapy. The choice of a treatment was mainly based on treatment efficacy and the patient's opinion was taken into account by 5% of GPs. The patient's evaluation of symptoms severity was consistent with the GP's in 53.9% of cases. A worsening of symptoms was reported significantly more frequently by patients (18.5%) than by GPs (8.8%). Among 94 patients who reported poor adherence, GPs estimated that the level of medication adherence was good for 72 of these (77%). CONCLUSION There was discordance between the evaluation made by GPs and by patients on the perception of BPH symptoms and medication adherence. The patient's opinion was rarely taken into account in the therapeutic decision, reflecting a lack of shared medical decision-making, which would be helpful for the physician in order to optimize BPH management.

Abstract
Mammary tumours represent the most common neoplastic disease of the female dog, and the incidence in female dogs is much higher than in women. Whereas the influence of sexual steroids on breast cancer (BC) development in dogs has been studied, very little is known about the role of prolactin (PRL). New studies show that until recently, the importance of PRL in human BC development and progression has been highly underestimated. PRL plays a role in promoting benign as well as malignant neoplastic cell growth in BC in vitro and in vivo. Sporadic publications proposed a tumour promotor role in the dog. The goal of this review is to summarize our knowledge about PRL and human BC as well as canine mammary tumourigenesis, and propose future research in this area.

Luteal and placental function in the bitch: spatio-temporal changes in prolactin receptor (PRLr) expression at dioestrus, pregnancy and normal and induced parturition. Reprod Biol Endocrinol 2011; 9:109. Abstract
BACKGROUND Endocrine mechanisms governing canine reproductive function remain still obscure. Progesterone (P4) of luteal origin is required for maintenance of pregnancy. Corpora lutea (CL) are gonadotrop-independent during the first third of dioestrus; afterwards prolactin (PRL) is the primary luteotropic factor. Interestingly, the increasing PRL levels are accompanied by decreasing P4 concentrations, thus luteal regression/luteolysis occurs in spite of an increased availability of gonadotropic support. PRL acts through its receptor (PRLr), the expression of which has not yet been thoroughly investigated at the molecular and cellular level in the dog. METHODS The expression of PRLr was assessed in CL of non-pregnant dogs during the course of dioestrus (days 5, 15, 25, 35, 45, 65 post ovulation; p.o.) as well as in CL, the utero/placental compartments (Ut/Pl) and interplacental free polar zones (interplacental sites) from pregnant dogs during the pre-implantation, post-implantation and mid-gestation period of pregnancy and during the normal and antigestagen-induced luteolysis. Expression of PRLr was tested by Real Time PCR, immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization. RESULTS In non-pregnant CL the PRLr expression was significantly upregulated at day 15 p.o. and decreased significantly afterwards, towards the end of dioestrus. CL of pregnancy showed elevated PRLr expression until mid gestation while prepartal downregulation was observed. Interestingly, placental but not interplacental expression of PRLr was strongly time-related; a significant upregulation was observed towards mid-gestation. Within the CL PRLr was localized to the luteal cells; in the Ut/Pl it was localized to the fetal trophoblast and epithelial cells of glandular chambers. Moreover, in mid-pregnant animals treated with an antigestagen, both the luteal and placental, but not the uterine PRLr were significantly downregulated. CONCLUSIONS The data presented suggest that the luteal provision of P4 in both pregnant and non-pregnant dogs may be regulated at the PRLr level. Furthermore, a role of PRL not only in maintaining the canine CL function but also in regulating the placental function is strongly suggested. A possible functional interrelationship between luteal P4 and placental and luteal PRLr expression also with respect to the prepartal luteolysis is implied.

Abstract
Past glacial-interglacial increases in the concentration of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) are thought to arise from the rapid release of CO2 sequestered in the deep sea, primarily via the Southern Ocean. Here, we present radiocarbon evidence from the Atlantic sector of the Southern Ocean that strongly supports this hypothesis. We show that during the last glacial period, deep water circulating around Antarctica was more than two times older than today relative to the atmosphere. During deglaciation, the dissipation of this old and presumably CO2-enriched deep water played an important role in the pulsed rise of atmospheric CO2 through its variable influence on the upwelling branch of the Antarctic overturning circulation.

Abstract
Communication between the patient and the professional carer lies at the heart of all decisions regarding diagnosis and treatment. However, patients and doctors often have divergent views on care needs; 2-COM (for 2-communication) is a simple patient-completed self-report instrument designed in order to facilitate patient-professional carer communication. Aims - To present 2-COM and to examine whether providing patients with an opportunity to identify and discuss their needs would improve communication and induce changes in care. Methods - The 2-COM is a simple list of 20 common problems, or areas of perceived need, that might be experienced by patients with severe mental illness. The list includes problems with housing, relationships, money, lack of activities, psychological distress, sexuality, symptoms and treatment side effects; 2-COM has shown adequate test-retest reliability and is well accepted by patients as a valued aid to communication with their doctor; 134 patients in a clinical diagnosis of schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder were recruited at seven European centres: Maastricht, Oviedo, Gijon, Hamburg, Copenhagen, Milan and Nice. The assessment took place over 3 out patient clinic visits; at visit 1, the clinician recorded a list of all current interventions, including medication and non-medical treatments, together with demographic information and an assessment of current level of functioning, using the Global Assessment of Functioning scale. Prior to the second visit, patients were randomised to receive either 2-COM or "standard care" - a routine appointment without 2-COM. Immediately after the interview, all patients, whether they had completed 2-COM or not, completed a confidential questionnaire in which they could indicate the perceived quality of communication. Similarly, clinicians completed a repeat of the list of all current interventions, together with an assessment of any changes to the treatment plan implemented after the interview with the patient. Four to six weeks after clinic visit 2, patients attended the clinic for a third, "routine" clinical interview. Both patients and clinicians then completed the same set of post-interview assessments as at visit 2. The 2-COM induced a stable improvement of patient-reported quality of patient-doctor communication (B=0.33, P=0.031), and induced changes in management immediately after the intervention. Treatment change was more likely in patients with more reported needs at the 2-COM and needs most likely to induce treatment changes. In conclusion, the study showed that 2-COM is a useful instrument to expose and subsequently bridge, patient-professional carer discordance on patient needs.

Evaluation of the repeatability of rhinomanometry and its use in assessing transnasal resistance and pressure in dogs. Am J Vet Res 2007; 68:178-84. [PMID: 17269884 DOI: 10.2460/ajvr.68.2.178] [Citation(s) in RCA: 6] [Impact Index Per Article: 0.4] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [MESH Headings] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Indexed: 11/20/2022]
Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate a modified posterior rhinomanometric method for clinical application in dogs. ANIMALS 15 healthy Beagles and 8 Bulldogs (4 healthy and 4 with respiratory problems). PROCEDURES Rhinomanometry was performed 3 times within a 15-minute period in anesthetized dogs. Transnasal pressure (P(NA)) and nasal resistance (R(NA)) were determined by use of artificial airflow (adjusted for body weight) for inspiration (P(NAin) and R(NAin), respectively) and expiration (P(NAout) and R(NAout)). Procedures were repeated for the Beagles 7 days later. RESULTS For the Beagles, mean +/- SD of P(NAin) for both days (0.162 +/- 0.042 kPa) was significantly lower than P(NAout) (0.183 +/- 0.053 kPa). Similarly, R(NAin) (1.47 +/- 0.41 kPa/[L/s]) was significantly lower than R(NAout) (1.64 +/- 0.46 kPa/[L/s]). Pairwise comparison of values for P(NA) and R(NA) for the 2 days revealed no significant difference. Repeatability of the method (estimated as within-day variation) for R(NA) was +/- 0.19 kPa/(L/s), whereas variation between the days was +/- 0.36 kPa/(L/s) for R(NAin) and +/- 0.44 kPa/(L/s) for R(NAout). The 4 clinically normal Bulldogs had R(NA) values ranging from 1.69 to 3.48 kPa/(L/s), whereas in the 4 Bulldogs with respiratory problems, R(NA) ranged from 9.83 to 20.27 kPa/(L/s). CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE R(NA) is inversely dependent on body size and nonlinearly associated with airflow. We propose that R(NA) in dogs should be determined for airflows standardized on the basis of body size. The P(NA) and R(NA) in Beagles can be measured with sufficient repeatability for clinical use and nasal obstructions are detectable.

Abstract
There is a paucity of relevant pediatric data on buprenorphine, especially with respect to the long-term application in children suffering chronic pain or to pediatric pharmacokinetic as well as pharmacodynamic data after repeated sublingual or long-term transdermal administration. Compared to adults, after single-dose buprenorphine, children seem to exhibit a larger clearance related to body weight and a longer duration of action. If combined with other opioids or sedatives or if the metabolite norbuprenorphine cumulates, it is difficult to estimate the risk of respiratory depression. Clear-cut evidence is missing that in children there is a ceiling of buprenorphine-induced respiratory depression. Due to its various application routes, long duration of action, and metabolism largely independent of renal function buprenorphine is of special clinical interest in pediatrics, especially for postoperative pain and cancer pain control. There is no reason to expect effects fundamentally different from those in adults.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Ten years after implementation of maternal mortality monitoring in France, we established a new estimate of the current maternal mortality ratio (MMR) and revisited maternal death data collection. MATERIAL AND METHODS Linkages were set up between female deaths and childbirths and between female deaths and causes of death. Information provided by confidential inquiries into maternal deaths carried out by the National Committee for maternal mortality study was added. The World Health Organization (WHO) definitions were used for maternal death and maternal mortality ratio. The study concerned deaths occurring in 1999. Results were compared with data from 1989. RESULTS The official data showed 20% fewer maternal deaths than our inquiry. Estimated from our data, the MMR was 9 per 100000 live births in 1999. Direct obstetric causes were more often recorded than indirect causes. Hemorrhage was the leading obstetric cause of maternal death (21%). In comparison with the 1989-90 data, the underestimation of maternal deaths and maternal mortality ratios are improving (from 18 to 9 per 100000). CONCLUSION These results, obtained while the mean maternal age at childbirth increased regularly, are interpreted as a sign of improvement in care. But the persistence of post partum hemorrhages as the leading cause of maternal death and the high rate of avoidable deaths, disclose important targets for further progress.

Abstract
The six endemic isopod species of Lake Baikal have been regarded as a small species flock with uncertain affinities to related asellids. We provide evidence from 16S rRNA sequences for polyphyletic origins of Baikalian Asellidae. One clade of two species is related to the Eurasian genus Asellus. The other clade, Baicalasellus, shows affinities to North American asellids and may have a long evolutionary history within the lake basin. Some speciation events within Baicalasellus clearly have a chromosomal basis. In contrast with numerous taxa exhibiting monophyletic radiations in ancient lakes, the endemic Baikalian isopods arose by multiple invasions and chromosomal mechanisms.

Cancer incidence and mortality in France over the period 1978-2000. Rev Epidemiol Sante Publique 2003; 51:3-30. Abstract
BACKGROUND Monitoring cancer incidence and mortality time trends is essential for cancer research and health-care planning. French cancer registries do not cover the entire population and do not provide a representative sample of the national population. Our study aimed at estimating national cancer incidence and mortality trends over the longest period available. METHODS Incidence and mortality data were collected over the period 1978-1997. Twenty-seven cancer sites were selected and age, sex and site specific incidence and mortality rates were estimated for each year from 1978 up to 2000. Observed incidence and mortality data in the population covered by cancer registries were modelled using age-cohort methods. An estimation of the incidence/mortality ratio was obtained from these models and applied to the mortality rates predicted from an age-cohort model for the entire French population. The person-years of observation were calculated cohort-wise from census data provided by the national institute of statistics RESULTS Cancer incidence increased by 63% throughout the study period, from 170,000 new cases in 1980 to 278,000 in 2000. This evolution was due to demographic changes but also to an increase in the risk of cancer which was estimated to more than 35% during the same period. In men, this change is largely explain by the increase of prostate cancer incidence. Among women, the increase was dominated by the continuing increase in breast cancer incidence. Large increases were also seen for non-Hodgkin lymphoma, melanoma, and thyroid cancer in both genders and for lung cancer in women. Cancer mortality increased by 20% from 125,000 deaths in 1980 to 150,000 in 2000. This increase is less than that predicted from changes in demographic factors and corresponds in fact to a decrease in the risk of death estimated to about 8%, slightly greater for women than for men. This decrease is associated with a decreasing incidence for stomach cancers for both sexes, alcohol-related cancer for men and cervical cancer for women. Colo-rectal cancer decreasing mortality contributes to this improvement despite an incidence increase. CONCLUSION Between 1980 and 2000, the study showed a large change in the cancer burden both quantitatively and qualitatively. Decrease in exposure, earlier diagnosis and therapeutic improvement explained part of this change, but overall the distribution of cancer cases shifted toward a distribution including less aggressive cancers. A striking divergence between incidence and mortality trends is observed for a great number of cancers. Prostate cancer shares with breast cancer the same pattern of a severe increasing incidence and a stable mortality. This points to important changes in medical practice and needs further analysis. The trend of lung cancer mortality among women should be emphasised since the situation will inevitably worsen in the coming years. It is already the third cause of cancer death among women.

Abstract
Tin(IV) oxide thin films have been prepared by dip-coating. The suspensions used for these depositions have been synthesized by microwave-induced thermohydrolysis of tin tetrachloride aqueous solutions in the presence of hydrochloric acid. Single or multiple depositions were tested, on glass substrates as well as on pure SiO2. The obtained thin films were characterized by optical microscopy, interferometric roughness measurements (Micromap), scanning electron microscopy, secondary ion mass spectroscopy, and scanning tunneling microscopy.

Estimation of the incidence of pleural mesothelioma according to death certificates in France. Am J Ind Med 2002; 42:188-99. [PMID: 12210688 DOI: 10.1002/ajim.10098] [Citation(s) in RCA: 18] [Impact Index Per Article: 0.8] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [MESH Headings] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Indexed: 11/07/2022]
Abstract
BACKGROUND The number of cases of pleural mesothelioma in France has varied substantially according to methods of assessment. MATERIALS AND METHODS We collected information from certifying physicians about 316 subjects who died between 1 July 1992 and 30 June 1993 in three regions of France with a cause of death coded as ICD-9 category 163. The ICD codes selected as the cause of death for 178 deaths between 1 January 1987 and 31 December 1992 histologically confirmed and diagnosed as pleural mesothelioma by an expert committee were examined. Finally, we used this information to estimate the number of deaths from pleural mesothelioma in France in 1992. RESULTS In Part I, 45% (men: 54%; women: 28%) of the cases coded as ICD-9 section 163 were definitely or probably mesothelioma; 18% (men: 16%; women: 21%) possibly mesothelioma; and 37% (men: 30%; women: 51%) other tumors, primarily adenocarcinoma metastases. In Part II, 74% of the confirmed pleural mesotheliomas were coded in category 163 (men: 75%; women: 70%). Extrapolation nationwide indicated that 902 deaths were coded as ICD-9 163 in 1992: 521 cases involved definite or probable mesothelioma and 724 definite, probable, and possible cases. CONCLUSIONS The analysis of this sample suggests that estimating the number of mesothelioma cases from the cause-of-death statistics may overestimate their incidence, but that death certificates appeared to report the diagnosis of histologically confirmed mesothelioma accurately.
