Using Model Analysis to Unveil Hidden Patterns in Tropical Forest Structures

When ordinating plots of tropical rain forests using stand-level structural attributes such as biomass, basal area and the number of trees in different size classes, two patterns often emerge: a gradient from poorly to highly stocked plots and high positive correlations between biomass, basal area and the number of large trees. These patterns are inherited from the demographics (growth, mortality and recruitment) and size allometry of trees and tend to obscure other patterns, such as site differences among plots, that would be more informative for inferring ecological processes. Using data from 133 rain forest plots at nine sites for which site differences are known, we aimed to filter out these patterns in forest structural attributes to unveil a hidden pattern. Using a null model framework, we generated the anticipated pattern inherited from individual allometric patterns. We then evaluated deviations between the data (observations) and predictions of the null model. Ordination of the deviations revealed site differences that were not evident in the ordination of observations. These sites differences could be related to different histories of large-scale forest disturbance. By filtering out patterns inherited from individuals, our model analysis provides more information on ecological processes.

A map of African humid tropical forest aboveground biomass derived from management inventories

Forest biomass is key in Earth carbon cycle and climate system, and thus under intense scrutiny in the context of international climate change mitigation initiatives (e.g. REDD+). In tropical forests, the spatial distribution of aboveground biomass (AGB) remains, however, highly uncertain. There is increasing recognition that progress is strongly limited by the lack of field observations over large and remote areas. Here, we introduce the Congo basin Forests AGB (CoFor-AGB) dataset that contains AGB estimations and associated uncertainty for 59,857 1-km pixels aggregated from nearly 100,000 ha of in situ forest management inventories for the 2000 - early 2010s period in five central African countries. A comprehensive error propagation scheme suggests that the uncertainty on AGB estimations derived from c. 0.5-ha inventory plots (8.6-15.0%) is only moderately higher than the error obtained from scientific sampling plots (8.3%). CoFor-AGB provides the first large scale view of forest AGB spatial variation from field data in central Africa, the second largest continuous tropical forest domain of the world.

Tropical forest recovery from logging: a 24 year silvicultural experiment from Central Africa

Large areas of African moist forests are being logged in the context of supposedly sustainable management plans. It remains however controversial whether harvesting a few trees per hectare can be maintained in the long term while preserving other forest services as well. We used a unique 24 year silvicultural experiment, encompassing 10 4 ha plots established in the Central African Republic, to assess the effect of disturbance linked to logging (two to nine trees ha⁻¹ greater than or equal to 80 cm DBH) and thinning (11–41 trees ha⁻¹ greater than or equal to 50 cm DBH) on the structure and dynamics of the forest. Before silvicultural treatments, above-ground biomass (AGB) and timber stock (i.e. the volume of commercial trees greater than or equal to 80 cm DBH) in the plots amounted 374.5 ± 58.2 Mg ha⁻¹ and 79.7 ± 45.9 m³ ha⁻¹, respectively. We found that (i) natural control forest was increasing in AGB (2.58 ± 1.73 Mg dry mass ha⁻¹ yr⁻¹) and decreasing in timber stock (−0.33 ± 1.57 m³ ha⁻¹ yr⁻¹); (ii) the AGB recovered very quickly after logging and thinning, at a rate proportional to the disturbance intensity (mean recovery after 24 years: 144%). Compared with controls, the gain almost doubled in the logged plots (4.82 ± 1.22 Mg ha⁻¹ yr⁻¹) and tripled in the logged + thinned plots (8.03 ± 1.41 Mg ha⁻¹ yr⁻¹); (iii) the timber stock recovered slowly (mean recovery after 24 years: 41%), at a rate of 0.75 ± 0.51 m³ ha⁻¹ yr⁻¹ in the logged plots, and 0.81 ± 0.74 m³ ha⁻¹ yr⁻¹ in the logged + thinned plots. Although thinning significantly increased the gain in biomass, it had no effect on the gain in timber stock. However, thinning did foster the growth and survival of small- and medium-sized timber trees and should have a positive effect over the next felling cycle.

The Acrolepiopsis assectella silk cocoon: kairomonal function and chemical characterisation

Two soluble sericin-like polypeptides, B1 and B2, from leek moth (Acrolepiopsis assectella) cocoons trigger host-acceptance behaviour in the parasitoid, Diadromus pulchellus (Proc. Roy. Soc. London B 269 (2002) 1879). We found that these polypeptides were particularly cysteine-rich and lost their ability to trigger host-acceptance behaviour after being denatured and purified. This suggests that inter-disulphide bonds and the secondary structure of B1 and B2 are important for their biological activity. We also isolated six insoluble polypeptides (or polypeptides of low solubility) from A. assectella cocoons. At least four of these polypeptides triggered host-acceptance behaviour. The strongest responses were observed with P22, a light-chain fibroin or a seroin-peptide, and P100, a sericin-like polypeptide that is probably more strongly associated with the silk core than are B1 and B2. In conclusion, several polypeptides from different parts of the A. assectella silk-cocoon (the insoluble core and coating of the silk thread) are able to elicit host-acceptance behaviour in D. pulchellus females. These polypeptides belong to different silk protein families and are used as kairomones by this specialist parasitoid.

Gustatory sensilla sensitive to protein kairomones trigger host acceptance by an endoparasitoid

Proteins isolated from the host cocoon of Acrolepiopsis assectella (Lepidoptera: Yponomeutoidea) act as kairomones for host acceptance by the endoparasitoid wasp Diadromus pulchellus Wesmael (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae). In this study, morphological, ultrastructural and electrophysiological studies were carried out in order to identify the contact chemoreceptive sensilla on the parasitoid antennae that perceive the protein kairomones. Three types of sensillum on the antennae of the females were found to have a chemosensory function. The receptor cell(s) of one sensillar type were shown to give a positive electrophysiological response to protein kairomones. This sensillar type is apically multiporous and female specific. Consequently, this sensillum could be the one implicated in the perception of the protein kairomone that triggers the host-acceptance behaviour of D. pulchellus females.

Effects of the Diadromus pulchellus ascovirus, DpAV-4, on the hemocytic encapsulation response and capsule melanization of the leek-moth pupa, Acrolepiopsis assectella

DpAV-4 is a symbiotic ascovirus found in natural populations of the solitary endoparasitoid wasp Diadromus pulchellus. The female wasp injects this virus into the pupae of the leek-moth Acrolepiopsis assectella during oviposition. The ascovirus replicates in the pupal tissues and the consequent lysis of the cells occurs synchronously with egg hatching and the development of the wasp larva. We show here that encapsulation and capsule melanization were activated when minute nylon monofilaments were implanted into the hemocoel of non parasitized leek-moth pupae and that encapsulation and melanization were inhibited in pupae parasitized by D. pulchellus. When the pupae were infected by DpAV-4, melanization of the nylon monofilaments was abolished, but a capsule was still always formed. These results indicate that DpAV-4 is a free virus able to alter the defence system of the parasitized host so as to improve the development of the parasitoid wasp, D. pulchellus.

Polypeptides of Acrolepiopsis assectella cocoon (Lepidoptera: Yponomeutoidea): an external host-acceptance kairomone for the parasitoid Diadromus pulchellus (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae)

Contact kairomones are essential for host-acceptance behaviour by female parasitoids. In the solitary endoparasitoid wasp, Diadromus pulchellus, this behaviour depends mainly on compound(s) in the cocoon of their host, Acrolepiopsis assectella pupae. Extracts of empty cocoons and polypeptides extracted from cocoons were tested in acceptance behaviour assays using cotton fibre lures bearing extracts. Extractions with solvents of increasing polarity indicated that the active compounds were polar, while SDS-PAGE showed that four glycopolypeptides contained enough information to trigger host-acceptance behaviour in female wasps. This kairomonal activity was found to be due to the protein moieties, and was independent of any glycosylation. These four glycopolypeptides might be two variants of two soluble sericin-like polypeptides differing in their degree of glycosylation.
