Co-crystallization of an organic solid and a tetraaryladamantane at room temperature

Tetraaryladamantanes have proven useful as chaperones for the co-crystallization of small molecules that do not readily crystallize by themselves. The co-crystals are often useful for structure elucidation. Usually, the small molecules are encapsulated in the crystal lattice of the aryladamantane that forms during rapid thermal crystallization. Thus far, co-crystallization has been limited to liquids as guest molecules. Here we report the co-crystal structures of phenol, which is solid at room temperature, with both 1,3,5,7-tetrakis(2,4-dimethoxyphenyl)adamantane (TDA) and 1,3,5,7-tetrakis(2,4-diethoxyphenyl)adamantane (TEO). The co-crystals were obtained from solutions in dichloromethane by slow evaporation or diffusion. The implications for generating other co-crystals of two solids are briefly discussed.

Determining the Relative Configuration of Propargyl Cyclopropanes by Co-Crystallization

Determining the diastereoselectivity of new synthetic mo­lecules can be a challenge when NMR methods fail and the compounds are difficult to crystallize. Encapsulating organic crystals can be used to overcome this challenge. Here we show that the diastereomeric confi­guration of racemic mixtures of propargyl cyclopropanes can be determined by co-crystallization with 1,3,5,7-tetrakis(2-bromo-4-methoxyphenyl)adamantane and X-ray crystallography. Three crystal structures are reported that unambiguously identify the products of Fe-catalyzed cyclopropanations as cis- or trans-isomers. These findings expand the scope of co-crystallization with tetraaryladamantanes as a method to determine the stereochemical configuration of organic molecules that are difficult to crystallize by themselves.

Absolute Configuration of Small Molecules by Co-Crystallization

The most reliable method to determine the absolute configuration of chiral molecules is X-ray crystallography, but small molecules can be difficult to crystallize. We report rapid co-crystallization of tetraaryladamantanes with small molecules as different as n-decane to nicotine to produce crystals for X-ray analysis and the assignment of absolute configuration when the molecules are chiral. A screen of 52 diverse compounds gave inclusion in co-crystals for 88 % of all cases and a high-resolution structure in 77 % of cases. Furthermore, starting from three milligrams of analyte, a combination of NMR spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography produced a full structure in less than three days using an adamantane crystallization chaperone that encapsulates the analyte at room temperature.

A Crystalline Ready-to-Use Form of Cyclopentadiene

Cyclopentadiene (Cpd) is widely used as a starting material in organic and inorganic chemistry. In neat form, Cpd dimerizes, making it necessary to distill it prior to use to obtain fully reactive material. We have screened three different tetraphenyladamantane octaethers for their ability to act as encapsulating organic crystal (EnOC) hosts for Cpd. To this end, we also synthesized 1,3,5,7-tetrakis(3,5-dimethoxyphenyl)adamantane, a new octaether, dubbed iso-TDA. Only one of the octaethers was found to produce inclusion complexes with Cpd in the crystalline state. The encapsulated diene was stable for one month and showed full reactivity in a series of different synthetic transformations.

Diastereoselective synthesis, structure and reactivity studies of ferrocenyloxazoline gold(i) and gold(ii) complexes

In the last few decades, gold complexes have demonstrated huge potential for soft Lewis acid catalysis. Despite the intensive research on Au complexes and planar chiral metallacycles, enantiopure ferrocenylgold complexes have - surprisingly - not been reported until the studies presented in this article. Herein, we report the asymmetric synthesis of planar chiral ferrocenyl Au(i) complexes. These dinuclear species form helically chiral ten-membered (NCCCAu)₂ rings stabilized by aurophilic interactions. In supramolecular solid state structures, linear, zigzag or helical Au(i) wires with regular AuAu separations were observed. The dissolved dinuclear entities could be oxidized by Au(i) to unique ferrocenyl Au(ii) complexes featuring short Au(ii)-Au(ii) bonds, while the ferrocene core remained intact. However, our initial studies revealed the issue of configurational lability of the ferrocenyl Au(ii) complexes in terms of the element of planar chirality in the presence of the gold source, (Me₂S)AuCl. This was successfully addressed by a systematic study implementing permanent σ-donor ortho-protecting groups such as methyl and trimethylsilyl, which impede an epimerization event. Oxidation of the dinuclear Au(i) complexes was also accomplished by oxidative addition reactions with halogenated solvents, preferably CHCl₃. Additional reactivity studies revealed that dinuclear Au(ii) dihalide complexes are also formed with reactive alkylhalides such as iodomethane, benzylbromide and benzyliodide. Interestingly, the whole spectral range of colors (violet, blue, green, yellow, and red) is covered by the title complexes depending on the Au oxidation state and the anionic ligands in the Au(ii) complexes. This appears to be quite unusual for ferrocenes, which typically adopt orange to red colors in a non-oxidized state.

Encapsulating Organic Crystals (EnOCs)

Achieving efficient capture, storage and release of small molecules is a challenge. Most materials that can harbor small molecules have been studied in the context of gas storage or separation. Formulations for hazardous reagents have only recently attracted attention, when organic compounds were discovered that encapsulate a broad range of guest molecules in crystals. Such encapsulating organic crystals (EnOCs) can suppress problematic properties of reagents and allow for controlled release in reaction mixtures. Unlike materials used for gas storage, which possess permanent porosity, their cavities are not held together by covalent or strong noncovalent interactions. Instead, EnOCs crystallize with the help of weaker packing forces. Substituted tetraaryladamantane octaethers can form high-loading inclusion compounds with reagents as guests, but they can also transition into tightly packed, solvate-free forms. Here we highlight the differences between EnOCs and known porous materials and discuss the potential of EnOCs as formulations in organic synthesis.

Diversity and composition of estuarine and lagoonal fish assemblages of Socotra Island, Yemen

Estuarine and lagoonal surveys of Socotra Island and selected sites on the Hadhramout coast of Yemen were conducted with the objective of documenting and analysing fish diversity and assemblage structure. A total of 74 species in 35 families were recorded, among which 65 species in 32 families were from Socotra and 20 species in 17 families were from mainland Yemen. Twenty-one species represent new faunal records for Socotra. Including historic records re-examined in this study, the total fish species richness of estuaries and lagoons of Socotra Island reaches 76, which is relatively high compared to species inventories of well-researched coastal estuaries in southern Africa. Five species dominate the occurrence and abundance frequencies: Terapon jarbua, Hyporhamphus sindensis, Aphanius dispar, Ambassis gymnocephala and Chelon macrolepis. Rarefaction and extrapolation analyses suggest that the actual number of fish species inhabiting some of those estuaries might be higher than the one observed. Thus, additional sampling at specific sites should be conducted to record other less conspicuous species. Ordination and multivariate analyses identified four main distinct assemblage clusters. Two groups are geographically well structured and represent northern Socotra and mainland Yemen, respectively. The other two assemblage groups tend to be determined to a greater extent by the synchrony between physical (e.g. estuary opening periods) and biological (e.g. spawning and recruitment periods) variables than by geographical location. Finally, the single intertidal lagoon of Socotra represents by itself a specific fish assemblage. The high proportion of economically important fish species (38) recorded underscores the paramount importance of these coastal water bodies as nursery sites, and for sustaining vital provisioning ecosystem services.
