Abstract
Though YB6 and LaB6 share the same crystal structure, atomic valence electron configuration, and phonon modes, they exhibit drastically different phonon-mediated superconductivity. YB6 superconducts below 8.4 K, giving it the second-highest critical temperature of known borides, second only to MgB2. LaB6 does not superconduct until near-absolute zero temperatures (below 0.45 K), however. Though previous studies have quantified the canonical superconductivity descriptors of YB6's greater Fermi-level (Ef) density of states and higher electron-phonon coupling (EPC), the root of this difference has not been assessed with full detail of the electronic structure. Through chemical bonding, we determine low-lying, unoccupied 4f atomic orbitals in lanthanum to be the key difference between these superconductors. These orbitals, which are not accessible in YB6, hybridize with π B-B bonds and bring this π-system lower in energy than the σ B-B bonds otherwise at Ef. This inversion of bands is crucial: the optical phonon modes we show responsible for superconductivity cause the σ-orbitals of YB6 to change drastically in overlap, but couple weakly to the π-orbitals of LaB6. These phonons in YB6 even access a crossing of electronic states, indicating strong EPC. No such crossing in LaB6 is observed. Finally, a supercell (the M k-point) is shown to undergo Peierls-like effects in YB6, introducing additional EPC from both softened acoustic phonons and the same electron-coupled optical modes as in the unit cell. Overall, we find that LaB6 and YB6 have fundamentally different mechanisms of superconductivity, despite their otherwise near-identity.

Abstract
PURPOSE We conducted qualitative interviews with patients with cancer and providers to identify gaps in clinical care and highlight care delivery solutions for the return of secondary germline findings. METHODS Twelve patients and 19 cancer providers from the United States were interviewed between January 2019 and May 2021. Interviews elicited feedback about patient information needs, emotional responses to secondary findings, and recommendations for improving pre-test education. RESULTS Patients' responses ranged from gratitude to regret, depending on how much pre-test counseling they received before tumor testing. Providers cited insufficient clinic time as a major barrier to pretest education, favoring online support tools and standardized pre-test education models. Providers had differing perspectives on how pre-test education should be integrated into clinical workflows but agreed that it should include the differences between somatic and germline testing, the likelihood of medically actionable findings, and the possibility of being referred to a genetics provider. CONCLUSION The spectrum of participants' responses to their secondary findings underscores the importance of adequate pre-test discussions before somatic sequencing. Although educational interventions could address patients' information needs and augment traditional pre-test counseling, health care systems, labs, and genetic providers may be called on to play greater roles in pre-test education.

Abstract
Focused ultrasound (FUS) is a non-invasive neuromodulation technology that is being investigated for potential treatment of neurological and psychiatric disorders. Focused ultrasound combined with microbubbles can temporarily open the intact blood-brain barrier (BBB) of animals and humans, and facilitate drug delivery. FUS exposure, either with or without microbubbles, has been demonstrated to alter the behavior of non-human primates, and previous work has demonstrated transient and long-term effects of FUS neuromodulation on functional connectivity using resting state functional MRI. However, it is unknown whether opening the BBB affects functional connectivity differently than FUS alone. Thus we applied FUS alone (neuromodulation) and FUS with microbubbles (BBB opening) in the dorsal striatum of lightly anesthetized non-human primates, and compared changes in functional connectivity in major brain networks. We found different alteration patterns between FUS neuromodulation and FUS-mediated BBB opening in several cortical areas, and we also found that applying FUS to a deep brain structure can alter functional connectivity in the default mode network and frontotemporal network.

Abstract
Introduction Bereavement and grief are social phenomena influenced by a multitude of cultural factors. Prior studies of bereavement adjustment have primarily focused on bereaved survivors who identify racially as white; knowledge of the experience of grief and bereavement among racial/ethnic and other minority groups, particularly among Latino/a groups, in the United States is limited. Objective The purpose of this review is to synthesize the literature documenting the bereavement experiences of the Latino/a community, evaluate the strength of the current evidence, and provide recommendations to guide future research. Method A narrative review of research on grief and bereavement in the Latino/a community published between 1990 and 2021. Two authors used a thematic, deductive approach to categorize emergent prevalent themes from the literature and used The Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE) and The Oxford Center for Evidence-Based Medicine-Evidence Quality Rating Scale (OCEBM) approaches to evaluate the strength of the qualitative and quantitative reports reviewed. Results Searches revealed 26 reports that were categorized into six themes: cultural values, mourning rituals, immigration, spirituality, disparities related to the COVID-19 pandemic, and the effects of COVID-19 on Latino/a communities. Our evaluation concludes that the evidence in this area is weak, with limited methodologically rigorous research examining the influence of culture on bereavement among Latino/a groups. Conclusion Research is needed to identify Latino/a groups' mental health, cultural, social, and family needs and how fulfillment of mourning rituals and other cultural factors may promote or impede bereavement adjustment. Investigation into factors that may protect bereaved survivors against adverse mental health outcomes is also needed. A better understanding of Latino/a grief and bereavement is a step toward the development of culturally competent interventions designed to promote the mental health and psychosocial adjustment of Latino/a mourners.

Abstract
Armchair graphene nanoribbons, when forming a superlattice, can be classified into different topological phases, with or without edge states. By means of tight-binding and classical molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, we studied the electronic and mechanical properties of some of these superlattices. MD shows that fracture in modulated superlattices is brittle, as for unmodulated ribbons, and occurs at the thinner regions, with staggered superlattices achieving a larger fracture strain than inline superlattices. We found a general mechanism to induce a topological transition with strain, related to the electronic properties of each segment of the superlattice, and by studying the sublattice polarization we were able to characterize the transition and the response of these states to the strain. For the cases studied in detail here, the topological transition occurred at ∼3-5% strain, well below the fracture strain. The topological states of the superlattice - if present - are robust to strain even close to fracture. The topological transition was characterized by means of the sublattice polarization of the states.

Abstract
Noninvasive brain stimulation using transcranial focused ultrasound (FUS) has many potential applications as a research and clinical tool, including incorporation into neural prosthetics for cognitive rehabilitation. To develop this technology, it is necessary to evaluate the safety and efficacy of FUS neuromodulation for specific brain targets and cognitive functions. It is also important to test whether repeated long-term application of FUS to deep brain targets improves or degrades behavioral and cognitive function. To this end, we investigated the effects of FUS in the dorsal striatum of nonhuman primates (NHP) performing a visual-motor decision-making task for small or large rewards. Over the course of 2 years, we performed 129 and 147 FUS applications, respectively, in two NHP. FUS (0.5 MHz @ 0.2-0.8 MPa) was applied to the putamen and caudate in both hemispheres to evaluate the effects on movement accuracy, motivation, decision accuracy, and response time. Sonicating the caudate or the putamen unilaterally resulted in modest but statistically significant improvements in motivation and decision accuracy, but at the cost of slower reaction times. The effects were dose (i.e., FUS pressure) and reward dependent. There was no effect on reaching accuracy, nor was there long-term behavioral impairment or neurological trauma evident on T1-weighted, T2-weighted, or susceptibility-weighted MRI scans. Sonication also resulted in significant changes in resting state functional connectivity between the caudate and multiple cortical regions. The results indicate that applying FUS to the dorsal striatum can positively impact the motivational and cognitive aspects of decision making. The capability of FUS to improve motivation and cognition in NHPs points to its therapeutic potential in treating a wide variety of human neural diseases, and warrants further development as a novel technique for non-invasive deep brain stimulation.

Abstract
A recent study associates carbon with single photon emitters (SPEs) in hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN). This observation, together with the high mobility of carbon in h-BN, suggests the existence of SPEs based on carbon clusters. Here, by means of density functional theory calculations, we studied clusters of substitutional carbon atoms up to tetramers in h-BN. Two different conformations of neutral carbon trimers have zero-point line energies and shifts of the phonon sideband compatible with typical photoluminescence spectra. Moreover, some conformations of two small C clusters next to each other result in photoluminescence spectra similar to those found in the experiments. We also showed that vacancies are unable to reproduce the typical features of the phonon sideband observed in most measurements because of the large spectral weight of low-energy breathing modes, ubiquitous in such defects.

Abstract
There are many simulation studies of mechanical properties of graphene nanoribbons (GNR), but there is a lack of agreement regarding elastic and plastic behavior. In this paper we aim to analyze mechanical properties of finite-size GNR, including elastic modulus and fracture, as a function of ribbon size. We present classical molecular dynamics simulations for three different empirical potentials which are often used for graphene simulations: AIREBO, REBO-scr and REAXFF. Ribbons with and without H-passivation at the borders are considered, and the effects of strain rate and different boundaries are also explored. We focus on zig-zag GNR, but also include some armchair GNR examples. Results are strongly dependent on the empirical potential employed. Elastic modulus under uniaxial tension can depend on ribbon size, unlike predictions from continuum-scale models and from some atomistic simulations, and fracture strain and progress vary significantly amongst the simulated potentials. Because of that, we have also carried out quasi-static ab-initio simulations for a selected size, and find that the fracture process is not sudden, instead the wave function changes from Blöch states to a strong interaction between localized waves, which decreases continuously with distance. All potentials show good agreement with DFT in the linear elastic regime, but only the REBO-scr potential shows reasonable agreement with DFT both in the nonlinear elastic and fracture regimes. This would allow more reliable simulations of GNRs and GNR-based nanostructures, to help interpreting experimental results and for future technological applications.

Abstract
A theoretical study of the Mn trimer adsorbed on the noble metal surfaces Au(111) and Cu(111) is reported. The calculations were performed using first-principles methods within the density functional theory and the generalized gradient approximation in the collinear and non-collinear magnetic phases. The system was modeled by considering a surface unit cell of 25 atoms to improve the trimer's isolation on the surface. We evaluated the trimer as a linear chain and forming triangular structures. The triangular trimer can be adsorbed in two possible configurations, above an empty surface triangle site (Δ) or on a triangle with a surface atom at the center in a hexagonal structure (H). The difference is the coordination of the Mn with surface atoms. We studied the antiferromagnetic (AF), ferromagnetic (FM), and non-collinear (NC) magnetic cases. As a result, the lowest energy configuration on both metals is the AFΔ configuration, which has an isosceles triangle shape. In comparison, the NC and the FM configurations adopt an equilateral geometry. The same trend was observed for the H configurations, but they are less bonded. The results are supported by calculating the spin-polarized electronic structure and the electronic charge transfer. Finally, we computed the energy barriers that inhibit the transformation of the linear chain to a delta Mn trimer on both substrates. Abstract
A theoretical study based on first-principles calculations about the interaction and diffusion of Ni atoms on pristine graphene and graphene with a single vacancy is presented. In the first case, we explored the structural changes due to the adsorption of Ni on graphene and the effects on the electronic structure. In the case of graphene with a vacancy, we analyzed the impact of the adsorbed Ni atom on the distortion of the graphene structure and how it depends on the distance from the graphene defect. In the analysis, we observed the changes in the electron localization function and the charge density. By knowing the interaction map of Ni with graphene, and the structural changes of the network, we performed energy barrier calculations within the climbing image nudged elastic band methodology to study the nickel diffusion. Finally, we explored how the vacancy and structural distortions affect the minimum energy paths and the saddle points for nickel moving away, around, and towards the vacancy.

Abstract
We propose a generalization of the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model of the bipartite lattice, consisting of a periodic array of domain walls. The low-energy description is governed by the superposition of localized states at each domain wall, forming an effective mono-atomic chain at a larger scale. When the domain walls are dimerized, topologically protected edge states can appear, just like in the original SSH model. These new edge states are formed exclusively by soliton-like states and therefore, the new topological states are qualitatively different from the regular SSH edge states. They posses a much longer localization length and are more resistant to on-site disorder, in marked contrast to the standard SSH case.

Abstract
We studied the soft landing of Ni atoms on a previously damaged graphene sheet by means of molecular dynamics simulations. We found a monotonic decrease of the cluster frequency as a function of its size, but few big clusters comprise an appreciable fraction of the total number of Ni atoms. The aggregation of Ni atoms is also modeled by means of a simple phenomenological model. The results are in clear contrast with the case of hard or energetic landing of metal atoms, where there is a tendency to form mono-disperse metal clusters. This behavior is attributed to the high diffusion of unattached Ni atoms, together with vacancies acting as capture centers. The findings of this work show that a simple study of the energetics of the system is not enough in the soft landing regime, where it is unavoidable to also consider the growth process of metal clusters.

Abstract
Tumour necrosis factor inhibitor therapy has drastically changed the management of chronic inflammatory diseases. Some important drawbacks that can cause loss of response during treatment with these drugs are related to their large individual variability, the disease burden and the formation of antidrug antibodies that increase its clearance. Therapeutic drug monitoring of these drugs is not yet recommended by all scientific societies, and if so, only in patients with inflammatory symptoms. Proactive therapeutic drug monitoring represents a new strategy with many potential clinical benefits, including the prevention of immunogenicity, a reduction in the need for rescue therapy and greater durability of tumour necrosis factor inhibitor treatment. The review is based on a systematic search of the literature for controlled trials, systematic reviews, experimental studies, guideline papers and cohort studies addressing the best practice in tumour necrosis factor inhibitor therapeutic drug monitoring. Although there is ample evidence supporting the use of therapeutic drug monitoring in clinical practice to achieve better outcomes, some challenges have been detected. Many studies are focused on finding solutions for the lack of standardization of analytical methods to measure tumour necrosis factor inhibitor and antidrug antibodies concentrations. Other challenges are development of effective cost-saving proactive algorithms to identify optimal drug concentrations and the research on the role of antidrug antibodies, especially in the management and prevention of loss of response. Therapeutic drug monitoring of tumour necrosis factor inhibitor offers a rational approach to the optimization of the treatment of chronic inflammatory disease. Although prospective controlled trials yield little conclusive evidence of its benefits, there is growing acceptance of its value in clinical practice.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Persons who inject drugs (PWID) might be at increased risk for Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection and reactivation of latent tuberculous infection (LTBI) due to their injection drug use. OBJECTIVES To determine prevalence and correlates of M. tuberculosis infection among PWID in San Diego, California, USA. METHODS PWID aged 18 years underwent standardized interviews and serologic testing using an interferon-gamma release assay (IGRA) for LTBI and rapid point-of-care assays for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) infections. Independent correlates of M. tuberculosis infection were identified using multivariable log-binomial regression. RESULTS A total of 500 participants met the eligibility criteria. The mean age was 43.2 years (standard deviation 11.6); most subjects were White (52%) or Hispanic (30.8%), and male (75%). Overall, 86.7% reported having ever traveled to Mexico. Prevalence of M. tuberculosis infection was 23.6%; 0.8% were co-infected with HIV and 81.7% were co-infected with HCV. Almost all participants (95%) had been previously tested for M. tuberculosis; 7.6% had been previously told they were infected. M. tuberculosis infection was independently associated with being Hispanic, having longer injection histories, testing HCV-positive, and correctly reporting that people with 'sleeping' TB cannot infect others. CONCLUSIONS Strategies are needed to increase awareness about and treatment for M. tuberculosis infection among PWID in the US/Mexico border region.

Abstract
Background Demand for shorter treatment time is common in orthodontic patients. Periodontally Accelerated Osteogenic Orthodontics (PAOO) is a somewhat new surgical procedure which allows faster tooth movement via combining orthodontic forces with corticotomy and grafting of alveolar bone plates. Leukocyte and Platelet-Rich Fibrin (L-PRF) possess hard- and soft-tissue healing properties. Further, evidence of pain-inhibitory and anti-inflammatory potential is growing. Therefore, this study explores the feasibility, intra- and post-operative effects of using L-PRF in PAOO in terms of post-operative pain, inflammation, infection and post-orthodontic stability. Material and Methods A pilot prospective observational study involving a cohort of 11 patients was carried out. A Wilcko’s modified PAOO technique with L-PRF (incorporated into the graft and as covering membrane) was performed with informed consent. Post-surgical pain, inflammation and infection were recorded for 10 days post-operatively, while the overall orthodontic treatment and post-treatment stability were followed up to 2 years. Results Accelerated wound healing with no signs of infection or adverse reactions was evident. Post-surgical pain was either “mild” (45.5%) or “moderate” (54.5%). Immediate post-surgical inflammation was either “mild” (89.9%) or “moderate” (9.1%). Resolution began on day 4 where most patients experienced either “mild” or no inflammation (72.7% and 9.1%, respectively). Complete resolution was achieved in all patients by day 8. The average orthodontic treatment time was 9.3 months. All cases were deemed stable for 2 years. Conclusions L-PRF is simple and safe to use in PAOO. Combination with traditional bone grafts potentially accelerates wound healing and reduces post-surgical pain, inflammation, infection without interfering with tooth movement and/or post-orthodontic stability, over a 2 years period; thus alleviating the need for analgesics and anti-inflammatory medications. Abstract
Topological crystalline insulators are a type of topological insulators whose topological surface states are protected by a crystal symmetry, thus the surface gap can be tuned by applying strain or an electric field. In this paper we predict by means of ab initio calculations a new phase of Bi which is a topological crystalline insulator characterized by a mirror Chern number nM = −2, but not a strong topological insulator. This system presents an exceptional property: at the (001) surface its Dirac cones are pinned at the surface high-symmetry points. As a consequence they are also protected by time-reversal symmetry and can survive against weak disorder even if in-plane mirror symmetry is broken at the surface. Taking advantage of this dual protection, we present a strategy to tune the band-gap based on a topological phase transition unique to this system. Since the spin-texture of these topological surface states reduces the back-scattering in carrier transport, this effective band-engineering is expected to be suitable for electronic and optoelectronic devices with reduced dissipation.

Abstract
Background: Aneurysms of the posterior cerebral artery (PCA) are rare and often associated with anterior circulation aneurysms. The lateral supraorbital approach allows for a very fast and safe approach to the ipsilateral lesions Circle of Willis. A technical note on the successful clip occlusion of two aneurysms in the anterior and posterior Circle of Willis via this less invasive approach has not been published before. The objective of this technical note is to describe the simultaneous microsurgical clip occlusion of an ipsilateral PCA-P1 and an internal carotid artery - posterior communicating artery (ICA-PCoA) aneurysm via the lateral supraorbital approach. Case Description: The authors present a technical report of successful clip occlusions of ipsilateral located PCA-P1 and ICA-PCoA aneurysms. A 59-year-old female patient was diagnosed with a PCA-P1 and an ipsilateral ICA-PCoA aneurysm by computed tomography angiography (CTA) after an ischemic stroke secondary to a contralateral ICA dissection. The patient underwent microsurgical clipping after a lateral supraorbital craniotomy. The intraoperative indocyanine green (ICG) videoangiography and the postoperative CTA showed a complete occlusion of both aneurysms; the parent vessels (ICA and PCA) were patent. The patient presents postoperative no new neurologic deficit. Conclusion: The lateral supraorbital approach is suitable for the simultaneous microsurgical treatment of proximal anterior circulation and ipsilateral proximal PCA aneurysms. Compared to endovascular treatment, direct visual control of brainstem perforators is possible.
