Abstract
(1) Background: Rectal prolapse is a benign condition that mainly affects females and the elderly. The most common symptoms are constipation and incontinence. The treatment of choice is surgical, but so far, there has been no gold standard method. The aim of this study is to compare the two most common intrabdominal procedures utilized for treating rectal prolapse: the resection rectopexy and the mesh rectopexy. (2) Methods: In this study, we conducted a thorough systematic review and meta-analysis of the available literature and compared the two different approaches regarding their complication rate, recurrence rate, and improvement of symptoms rate. (3) Results: No statistically significant difference between the two methods was found regarding the operating time, the length of stay, the overall complication rate, the surgical site infection rate, the cardiopulmonary complication rate, the improvement in constipation and incontinence rates, and the recurrence rate. (4) Conclusions: Our study revealed that mesh rectopexy and resection rectopexy for rectal prolapse have similar short- and long-term outcomes. As a result, the decision for the procedure used should be individualized and based on the surgeon's preference and expertise.

Abstract
Introduction: Multiple factors have been linked with increased risk of anastomotic leak in bowel surgery, including infections, inflammatory bowel disease, patient comorbidities and poor surgical technique. The aim of this study was to investigate the positive effect, if any, of adipose derived mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) mixed with platelet-rich plasma (PRP) in the healing of bowel anastomoses, in an inflammatory environment after establishment of experimental colitis. Materials and Methods: Thirty-five male Wistar rats were divided into five groups of seven animals: normal controls, colitis controls, PRP, MSCs, and PRP+MSCs. All groups underwent laparotomy, one-cm segmental colectomy and anastomosis in situ. In the colitis group, colectomy was performed at the affected area. Colitis was previously established by transrectal administration of 2,4,6-trinitrobenzene sulfonic acid (TNBS) except for the normal controls. Post-mortem histopathological, tissue hydroxyproline and anastomotic bursting pressure (ABP) assessments were performed. The Mann-Whitney U test was used to assess statistical significance differences between groups. Results: No perioperative mortality was noted. Tissue hydroxyproline and ABP were significantly increased in the group of PRP+MSCs compared to colitis controls (p = 0.0151 and p = 0.0104, respectively). Inflammatory cell infiltration was lower and fibroblast activity higher in PRP+MSCs group, but not statistically significant (p > 0.05). Neoangiogenesis (p = 0.0073) and anastomotic area epithelialization (p = 0.0182) were significantly higher in PRP + MSCs group compared to colitis controls. Discussion: The synergistic effect of the PRP and MSCs is apparently responsible for the improved healing markers in bowel anastomoses even on inflammatory bowel. This gives hope for primary anastomoses and stoma saving in many emergency and/or elective circumstances, especially in immunocompromised or malnourished patients, even in cases with inflammation or peritonitis. Clinical studies should follow in order to support the clinical application of PRP+MSCs in gastrointestinal anastomoses.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION SARS-CoV-2 infection has had a significant impact on vulnerable individuals including transplant patients. Socioeconomic deprivation negatively affects outcomes of many health conditions. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of socioeconomic deprivation on the incidence and severity of SARS-CoV-2 infection among Welsh transplant patients. METHODS This study is a retrospective, cross-sectional study on the transplant population of Wales. The Welsh Index of Multiple Deprivation (WIMD) was used to assess the influence of socioeconomic deprivation on outcomes of Welsh transplant patients who developed SARS-CoV-2 infection. Outcome measures were the incidence of SARS-CoV-2 infection, rates of hospital and ICU admission, development of acute kidney injury (AKI) and mortality. A logistic binomial regression analysis was used to correlate the various risk factors with the incidence of SARS-CoV-2 infection. RESULTS Two hundred and sixty-six (25%) of regular follow up patients had SARS-CoV-2 infection; of these 55 (20.7%) were admitted, 15 (5.6%) to ICU, 37 (13.9%) developed AKI, and 23 (8.6%) died. In a regression analysis, patients of younger age were associated with more (p = .001) and those with SPK (simultaneous pancreas kidney) transplant less chance of infection (p = .038), whereas social deprivation was not associated with the chance of infection (p = .14). In regression analysis increased social deprivation was associated with higher chance of AKI post SARS-CoV-2 (p = .049). CONCLUSIONS Socioeconomic deprivation did not affect the rates or severity of SARS-CoV-2 infection apart from the degree of AKI in Welsh Transplant patients. Adherence to the preventive measures for this high-risk population must continue to remain a priority.

Abstract
Background and Objectives: The coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic influenced the healthcare system tremendously, as well as the number of elective surgical procedures worldwide. The aim of this study is to investigate the COVID-19 pandemic's impact on esophagectomies. Materials and Methods: The MEDLINE (via PubMed), Cochrane Library, and Google Scholar bibliographical databases were systematically searched. Original clinical studies investigating the outcomes of esophageal cancer surgery during the COVID-19 pandemic were deemed eligible. After exclusion criteria were applied, eight studies were considered eligible for inclusion. Results: Eight studies with non-overlapping populations, reporting on patients undergoing esophagectomy for resectable esophageal cancer during the COVID-19 pandemic, were included in our analysis, with a total of 18548 patients. Background characteristics for age, lung disease, smoking history as well as Body Mass Index and age were equal among the groups. The background of diabetes presented a statistically significant difference among the groups. Perioperative outcomes like reoperation rates, the length of intensive care unit stay, or readmission rates were not significantly increased during the pandemic. The 30-day readmission, and 30- and 90-day mortality were not affected either. The length of hospital stay was significantly lower in the non-pandemic period. Conclusions: The results of our study support the evidence that in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, esophageal cancer operations took place safely and effectively, similarly to the standards of the non-COVID-19 era.

Abstract
Colorectal malignancies are the third-most common malignancies worldwide, with a rising incidence. Surgery remains the treatment of choice and adequate lymph node dissection is required for accurate staging. The objective of this study is to assess the use of carbon nanoparticles in lymph node tracing and resection in cases of colorectal cancer. For that purpose, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of studies included in Medline, Scopus, Embase, Cochrane Library, and Google Scholar databases. In the end, ten studies with a total number of 1418 patients were included in the final statistical analysis. The meta-analysis carried out showed that the use of carbon nanoparticles results in an increased number of lymph nodes harvested (WMD 6.15, 95% CI 4.14 to 8.16, p < 0.001) and a higher rate of cases with more than 12 lymph nodes harvested (OR 9.57, 95% CI 2.87 to 31.96, p = 0.0002). As a consequence, we suggest that carbon nanoparticles are used on a wider scale and that future research focuses on assessing the association between their use and overall patient survival. This study is limited by the fact that all included studies originate from China and by the fact that certain oncologic parameters and long-term outcomes have not been taken into account in the analysis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Gorlin syndrome, also known as basal cell nevus syndrome (BCNS), nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome (NBCCS), and Jaw cyst-Basal cell nevus-Bifid rib syndrome, is a rare multisystemic syndrome that can affect a remarkable number of tissues and organs in the human body. Patients with this syndrome are in jeopardy of developing basal cell skin cancer during puberty or early adulthood. CASE REPORT Herein, we report a case of a 58-year-old woman who had multiple pigmented skin lesions and a palpable tumor of the left scapula. The patient underwent surgical excision of the above-mentioned lesions. The histopathological examination revealed that 10 of them were basal cell skin carcinomas (BCCs); therefore, the patient was proven to have the syndrome. She had a history of similar skin lesions, which were removed before the age of 20. CONCLUSIONS This case highlights that rare phenomena, such as the presence of multiple BCCs, require additional investigations and a multidisciplinary approach since a rare and potentially life-threating condition might be the underlying cause. Early diagnosis of Gorlin syndrome is of paramount importance to facilitate the appropriate therapeutic approach, as directed by a multidisciplinary team. Patients with multiple skin lesions need to have regular assessments by their general practitioner or dermatologist, with dermoscopy serving as an important preventive measure. Furthermore, because pathogenesis of the syndrome is characterized by development of basal cell carcinomas, consecutive follow-up is of a great significance.

Abstract
Simple Summary Bowel resection is often required to obtain complete removal of ovarian cancer. A major complication of this operation is anastomotic leakage, which has been shown to increase morbidity and mortality in this population. Numerous original research studies have assessed the risk factors for anastomotic leaks. We aimed to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis to identify statistically significant risk factors. This meta-analysis identified multiple bowel resections as the only significant risk factor. With further research to identify additional risk factors, new management guidelines could be implemented to minimize the risk of anastomotic leaks and improve patient outcomes. Abstract Introduction: Anastomotic leaks (AL) following ovarian cytoreduction surgery could be detrimental, leading to significant delays in commencing adjuvant chemotherapy, prolonged hospital stays and increased morbidity. The aim of this study was to investigate risk factors associated with anastomotic leaks after ovarian cytoreduction surgery. Material and methods: The MEDLINE (via PubMed), Cochrane Library, EMBASE and Scopus bibliographical databases were searched. Original clinical studies investigating risk factors for AL in ovarian cytoreduction surgery were included. Results: Eighteen studies with non-overlapping populations reporting on patients undergoing cytoreduction surgery for ovarian cancer (n = 4622, including 344 cases complicated by AL) were included in our analysis. Patients undergoing ovarian cytoreduction surgery complicated by AL had a significantly higher rate of 30-day mortality but no difference in 60-day mortality. Multiple bowel resections were associated with an increased risk of postoperative AL, while no association was observed with body mass index (BMI), American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) score, age, smoking, operative approach (primary versus interval cytoreductive, stapled versus hand-sewn anastomoses and formation of diverting stoma), neoadjuvant chemotherapy and use of hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC). Discussion: Multiple bowel resections were the only clinical risk factor associated with increased risk for AL after bowel surgery in the ovarian cancer population. The increased 30-day mortality rate in patients undergoing ovarian cytoreduction complicated by AL highlights the need to minimize the number of bowel resections in this population. Further studies are required to clarify any association between neoadjuvant chemotherapy and decreased AL rates.

Abstract
The aim of this systematic review is to assess the impact of vitamin D on the outcomes of kidney transplantation and investigate whether its deficiency is associated with a negative impact. Methods: We conducted a systematic literature search in PubMed, Scopus and Cochrane databases, as well as gray literature. Ultimately, 16 articles with an average of 255.75 patients were included in this review. These articles compared the long-term outcomes of vitamin D deficiency and/or vitamin D supplementation therapy on kidney transplant recipients by assessing various parameters. Results: Most of the included studies showed a negative effect of vitamin D deficiency on kidney transplantation by being associated with a worse graft function, higher incidence of acute rejection episodes, higher incidence of proteinuria and lower overall graft and patient survival rate. Conclusions: We suggest that patients awaiting kidney transplantation have a careful evaluation in order to assess their vitamin D status and the optimal supplementation therapy. Regular follow-up of vitamin D levels post-transplant is also suggested. Prospective studies will be needed to establish the positive effects of vitamin D supplementation therapy on kidney transplant outcomes.

Abstract
Abstract
Introduction
Operation notes are essential in providing details of the procedure undertaken. The Royal College of Surgeons (RCS) Good Surgical Practice (GSP) guidelines recommend a checklist of 18 documentation items. Although these guidelines are useful, their broad and non-specific nature provides limitations to fields like transplantation, where additional information is needed. Ghoneima et al recommended transplant specific GSP checklist of 32 criteria for operation notes in transplantation. Our aim is to evaluate renal transplantation operation notes against these criteria.
Method
A retrospective audit of renal transplant operation notes was undertaken within Cardiff Transplant Unit between October 2020–2021. Notes were reviewed against new transplant specific GSP checklist.
Results
A total of 85 renal transplants were performed by 8 Consultant Surgeons. Sixty-two (73%) operation notes were hand-written and 23 (27%) electronically typed. Eleven standards had documentation compliance of >95% (e.g., date, surgeons’ names, recipient blood vessels, incision, allograft vascular anatomy, perfusion timings, closure, signature, etc).
Some important transplant-specific information (e.g., primary renal disease, details of current renal replacement therapy, reperfusion characteristics, donor details (e.g., age, comorbidities), HLA mismatch, prosthesis (ureteric stent) details) were poorly documented (0–27% documentation compliance). Antibiotic and DVT prophylaxis documentation was also very poor (1–30%). Post-operative instructions did not record target blood pressure (0%) and postoperative potassium and ultrasound scan instructions were recorded in 65% of notes.
Discussion
Clear documentation is important for good surgical practice. This study highlights the need for a transplant-specific operation notes template, to not only improve the documentation but to standardize the key information recorded for every transplant performed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 is associated with high mortality among transplant recipients. Comparative data that define humoral responses to the Oxford-AstraZeneca (AZ) and BNT162b2 (Pfizer-BioNTech) vaccines are limited. METHODS We recruited 920 kidney transplant patients receiving at least 1 dose of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 vaccine, excluding patients with virus pre-exposure. Serological status was determined with the COVID-SeroKlir ELISA (Kantaro-EKF Diagnostics). Patients with a corrected antibody level of <0.7 AU/mL were considered seronegative. RESULTS Four hundred ninety-five AZ and 141 Pfizer patients had a sample analyzed after first dose and 593 after second dose (346 AZ versus 247 Pfizer). After first dose, 25.7% of patients seroconverted (26.6% AZ, 22.8% Pfizer). After second dose, 148 (42.8%) of AZ seroconverted compared with 130 (52.6%) of Pfizer (P = 0.02; hazard ratio, 1.48; 95% confidence interval, 1.07-2.06). When negative responders were excluded, Pfizer patients were shown to have significantly higher response than AZ patients (median 2.6 versus 1.78 AU/mL, P = 0.005).Patients on mycophenolate had a reduced seroconversion rate (42.2% versus 61.4%; P < 0.001; hazard ratio, 2.17) and reduced antibody levels (0.47 versus 1.22 AU/mL, P = 0.001), and this effect was dose dependent (P = 0.05). Prednisolone reduced the seroconversion from 58.2% to 43.6% (P = 0.03) among Pfizer but not AZ recipients. Regression analysis showed that antibody levels were reduced by older age (P = 0.002), mycophenolate (P < 0.001), AZ vaccine (versus Pfizer, P = 0.001), and male gender (P = 0.02). Sixteen of 17 serious postvaccine infections occurred to patients who did not seroconvert. CONCLUSIONS Both seroconversion and antibody levels are lower in AZ compared with Pfizer vaccinated recipients following 2 vaccine doses. Mycophenolate was associated with lower antibody responses in a dose-dependent manner. Serious postvaccine infections occurred among seronegative recipients.

Abstract
Bladder cancer is a heterogeneous disease with variable natural history. Non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer has a favorable prognosis following transurethral resection, but the optimal adjuvant chemotherapy plan is still in debate. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of the adjuvant intravesical administration of a single dose of gemcitabine in the outcome of this disease. For that purpose, we performed a systematic review and meta-analysis on available randomized control trials on MEDLINE, EMBASE, Cochrane, Scopus, and Google Scholar databases. Ultimately, two studies were included with a total number of 654 patients. The statistical analysis performed showed that a single post-operative intravesical dose of gemcitabine does not affect the recurrence rate of non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer compared to placebo. Therefore, this therapeutic strategy does not offer any significant improvement on the outcomes of the disease. Nonetheless, due to the plethora of available therapeutic agents and treatment strategies, further research is needed to establish the optimal treatment in this category of patients.

Abstract
The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of SARS-CoV-2 infection on serum tacrolimus levels. Tacrolimus levels of 34 transplant patients diagnosed with SARS-CoV-2 in 2020 were compared with their pre-infection values and those of a control group with alternative infections. 20 out of 34 (59%) had high levels. At diagnosis, median tacrolimus level in the SARS-CoV-2 cohort was 9.6 μg/L (2.7-23) compared to 7.9 μg/L in the control group (p = 0.07, 95% CI for difference -0.3-5.8). The ratio of post-infection to pre-infection tacrolimus values was higher in the SARS-CoV-2 group (1.7) compared to the control group (1.25, p = 0.018, 95% CI for difference 0.08-0.89). The acute kidney injury rate was 65% (13 of 20) in SARS-CoV-2 patients with a level >8 μg/dl, compared to 29% (4 of 14) in those with lower levels (p = 0.037). Median length of stay was 10 days among SARS-CoV-2 infected patients with high tacrolimus levels compared to 0 days in the rest (p = 0.04). Four patients with high levels died compared to 2 in the control group. Clinicians should be aware of this potential effect on tacrolimus levels and take appropriate measures.

Abstract
Extramammary Paget's disease is a rare condition, affecting 6.5% of all patients with Paget's disease. The most common extramammary site is the vulvar area. Although diagnosis in some patients is difficult to set, early diagnosis is of high importance in order to detect the irreversible progression of the lesion early and prevent distant metastasis. An 89-year-old female and a 69-year-old female presented within three months with an eczematous lesion with leukoplakia in the vulva. The incisional biopsy of the skin revealed extramammary Paget's disease. Both patients underwent a surgical wide local excision of the lesion and the specimens were sent for histopathological examination. Extramammary Paget's disease has a high potential for distant malignancies and local recurrence, dictating that surgical excision is the most efficient treatment. The rareness of the condition and the diagnostic difficulties underline the need for early skin biopsy, which is the most efficient diagnostic tool.

Abstract
Accessory and atypical muscles of the upper limb are common, whereas symptomatic variations presenting with carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) are rare. A rare unilateral accessory transverse carpal muscle located palmar to the transverse carpal ligament is described. The accessory muscle, associated with CTS clinical manifestations in a 38-year-old Greek male worker, can be quite problematic during CTS operation. The current case emphasizes the importance of meticulous knowledge of the variable anatomy of the carpal tunnel (CT) area, since the accessory muscles may be accompanied by ectopic motor branches and a high risk of iatrogenic injury. Recognition and careful evaluation of accessory muscles may enhance a surgeon’s ability to carry out a safer and successful CT approach.

Abstract
Pancreatic cancer is still diagnosed at a late stage although we have novel diagnostic tools. Pancreatic cancer chemotherapy treatment resistance is observed and therefore novel treatments are in need. Anti-cancer stem cell therapy, combination of chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy with immunotherapy, proteins/enzymes and gene therapy are currently under evaluation. Targeted treatment with tyrosine kinase inhibitors is also administered and novel inhibitors are also under evaluation. In the current review we present recent data from our search within the year 2018.

Abstract
Introduction: Lung cancer is diagnosed at advanced stage due to lack of early disease symptoms. Currently we have several different biopsy techniques such as; radial endobronchial ultrasound, convex probe endobronchial ultrasound, electromagnetic navigation, ct guided biospy and transthoracic ultrasound biopsy. Novel therapies such as; immunotherapy is being used for non-small cell lung cancer in the everyday clinical practice as first and second line treatment. Programmed ligand-1 is essential in order to administer immunotherapy as first line treatment. Patients and Methods: Two thousands and two patients were included in our study where programmed ligand 1 was evaluated with DAKO technique and BIOCARE®. Cell blocks were obtain with convex probe ebus-tbna 22G needle. Results: The Deming regression between DAKO and BIOCARE clone revealed an amazingly strong linear relationship as the coefficient of determination indicated (R2=0.999) and the variance ratio close to 1 (0.978), proving that both techniques can equally well be substituted for each other. The regression coefficient equals to 1 and the intercept hardly differs from 0 (0.936). In practice, this relationship permits adopting the economically affordable BIOCARE clone for further medical considerations. Conclusion: No statistical difference was observed between DAKO and BIOCARE®, therefore we propose that both techniques can be used in order to investigate the expression of programmed ligand 1 with safety. PD-L1 expression was higher in the central mass instead of the lymphnodes.

Abstract
Although we have new diagnostic tools for non-small cell lung cancer, diagnosis is still made in advanced stages of the disease. However, novel treatments are being introduced in the market and new ones are being developed. Targeted therapies and immunotherapy have brought about a bloom in the treatment of non-small cell lung cancer. Still we have to find ways to administer drugs in a more efficient and safe method. In the current review, we will focus on the administration of inhaled cisplatin based on published data.

Abstract
Background Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) are the most common mesenchymal tumors of the gastrointestinal tract. However, rectal GISTs represent only 5% of this category. We report a case of a rectal GIST treated with local excision after neoadjuvant therapy. Case presentation A 41-year-old male patient presented with anal bleeding. Colonoscopy revealed a mass located 5 cm from the anal verge. Histological examination showed a GIST with immunohistochemical positivity for CD117 and CD34. Transanal local excision was performed after neoadjuvant therapy. Conclusion Neoadjuvant immunotherapy for GISTs with unfavorable localization may facilitate local excision and avoid complications of more demanding operations.

Abstract
Lung cancer still remains diagnosed at a late stage although we have novel diagnostic techniques at our disposal. However; for metastatic disease we have novel therapies based on pharmacogenomics. Tumor heterogenity provides us different treatments. There are several reasons for carcinogenesis; fibrosis and scar tissue provides an environment that induces malignancy. In the current review we will try and elucidate the pathways involved from scar tissue to carcinogenesis.

Abstract
Lung cancer is still diagnosed at a late stage although novel diagnostic techniques are in use. However, as pharmacogenomics have evolved novel targeted therapies either with tyrosine kinase inhibitors or immunotherapy can be currently used as daily treatment. We present the case of a woman with anaplastic lymphoma-positive expression and programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) 0% score upon diagnosis who underwent therapeutic surgery and represented PD-L1 90% expression, however, without anaplastic lymphoma kinase expression. Transformation of the tumor or new tumor is a question to be answered for this patient and possibly we should try and direct rebiopsies for this group of targeted therapy patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hydatid disease is a global problem. We report our experience with such cases where the dominant cysts were located outside the liver and lungs. In particular, these cysts were found in the peritoneum which is an uncommon location. METHODS Between 1967 and 2007 a total of 34 patients were operated for primary or secondary peritoneal cysts. Most of the patients were asymptomatic or had atypical symptoms. The diagnosis was based on the preoperative history, rupture of the cysts, serology, ultrasound (USS) and computer tomography (CT). Open surgery was the procedure of choice with conservative (18 cysts) and radical (25 cysts) methods. RESULTS The outcome of surgery was good without postoperative mortality or severe morbidity and the recurrence rate was 23.5%. CONCLUSIONS Conservative surgery can provide good results in symptomatic peritoneal cysts. Radical therapy is also ideal but only in properly selected cases. The management of this situation is difficult requiring sound operative experience preferably with a one-stage procedure after an appropriate preoperative preparation.

Abstract
Introduction Breast cancer is the most common malignancy in women worldwide. Long-term survivors among patients treated for breast cancer are at a high risk for developing a second primary malignancy. Hepatocellular carcinoma is the most frequent primary hepatic malignancy and should be ruled out in breast cancer patients who are diagnosed with solitary hepatic lesions. False diagnosis may lead to inappropriate oncologic staging and treatment of the disease. Case presentation We present the case of a 73-year-old female patient who had been treated for invasive ductal breast cancer 7 years ago and was diagnosed with a solid hepatic lesion at segments VI and VII and a small, calcified lesion at the tail of the pancreas on follow-up with an abdominal computed tomography. Oncology council decided that both lesions could be resected after determining whether they were metastatic or second primary malignancies. The patient underwent laparotomy and rapid biopsy which showed primary hepatocellular carcinoma and fibrosis of the pancreas. We performed hepatic segmentectomy (VI–VII) and cholecystectomy, while the pancreatic lesion was left intact. The postoperative course of the patient was uncomplicated and she remains disease free 2 years after the operation without any adjuvant therapy. Conclusion All hepatic lesions detected in breast cancer patients should be evaluated with open mind and liver biopsy should be performed to get a definitive diagnosis and implement the proper treatment strategy.

Abstract
Obturator hernias are exceedingly rare in surgical routine, constituting 0.073% of all intra-abdominal hernias in the West and 1% in the far East. Commonly known as 'little old lady's hernia', obturator hernias are usually seen in frail, octogenarian multiparous women. This case report discusses an 85-year-old female who had symptoms of acute bowel obstruction; thanks to high degree of clinical suspicion and aided by a computed tomography (CT) of abdomen and pelvis, an incarcerated right obturator hernia was diagnosed preoperatively and treated successfully. Obturator hernia is a rare condition associated with a high rate of morbidity and mortality. CT scan is the most accurate imaging method for pre-operative diagnosis. Early diagnosis and surgical intervention are fundamentals to lead to better outcomes for the patients.

Abstract
Colorectal cancer still remains the third cause of cancer death among cancer patients. Early diagnosis is crucial and they can be either endoscopic or with blood biomarkers. Endoscopic methods consist of gastroscopy and colonoscopy, however; in recent years, endoscopic ultrasound is being used. The microenvironment is very important for the successful delivery of the treatment. Several proteins and hormones play a crucial role in the efficiency of the treatment. In the current mini review we will focus on interferon-γ.
