[Establishment of a prognostic nomogram and discussion on optimal treatment for cervical adenocarcinoma:a retrospective study based on SEER database and Chinese single-center data]

Objective: To establish and validate a predicting nomogram for cervical adenocarcinoma based on surveillance, epidemiology and end results (SEER) database and Chinese single-center data, and to explore the optimal treatment for cervical adenocarcinoma. Methods: This study selected 2 478 cervical adenocarcinoma patients from the SEER database as the training cohort, and 195 cervical adenocarcinoma patients from Cancer Hospital of Dalian University of Technology, Liaouing Cancer Hospital and Institute as an external validation cohort. Clinicopathological information and follow-up data of the two cohorts were collected. The radiotherapy group was defined as receiving comprehensive treatment based on concurrent chemoradiotherapy after initial diagnosis, while the surgery group was defined as receiving comprehensive treatment based on radical surgery. Log-rank test and cox regression were used to evaluate factors affecting the prognosis of cervical adenocarcinoma patients. A nomogram was drawn to predict the 3-year and 5-year overall survival rates of cervical adenocarcinoma patients, and then internal validation of the training cohort from SEER database and external validation of the hospital cohort were conducted. Results: (1) In the SEER database training cohort, there were 385 patients (15.54%, 385/2 478) in the radiotherapy group and 2 093 patients (84.46%, 2 093/2 478) in the surgery group. Overall survival time of the radiotherapy group was (55.8±51.3) months, while that of the surgery roup was (94.4±61.7) months, the difference between the two groups was statistically significant (χ2=256.44, P<0.001). Log-rank test showed that age, marital status, maximum of tumor diameters, pathological grade, International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) stage, and treatments were all significant factors affecting the overall survival time of cervical adenocarcinoma patients (all P<0.001). Multivariate Cox regression analysis showed that elder (>50 years old), single status, huge tumors (>4 cm), high pathological grades (G2, G3), and advanced FIGO stages (≥Ⅱa2 stage) were independent risk factors for the overall survival time of cervical adenocarcinoma patients (all P<0.05); compared with radiotherapy, surgery was a protective factor for the prognosis of cervical adenocarcinoma patients (HR=0.619, 95%CI: 0.494-0.777; P<0.001). Further analysis of locally advanced stage and Ⅲc stage of patients showed that surgery was a protective factor for the prognosis of cervical adenocarcinoma patients with a maximum tumor diameter >4 to <6 cm (HR=0.414, 95%CI: 0.182-0.942; P=0.036) in locally advanced stage and Ⅲc T1 to T2 stage (HR=0.473, 95%CI: 0.307-0.728; P=0.001). (2) The external validation cohort consisted of 39 patients (20.00%, 39/195) in the radiotherapy group and 156 patients (80.00%, 156/195) in the surgery group. The overall survival time of patients in the radiotherapy group was (51.7±34.3) months, while that of the surgery group was (63.1±26.6) months (χ2=28.41, P<0.001). Further analysis was conducted on locally advanced stage and Ⅲc stage patients, and multivariate Cox regression analysis was performed after propensity score matching, which showed that surgery was a protective factor for the prognosis of cervical adenocarcinoma patients with a maximum tumor diameter >4 to <6 cm in locally advanced stage (HR=0.141, 95%CI: 0.023-0.843; P=0.032) and Ⅲc T1 to T2 stage (HR=0.184, 95%CI: 0.036-0.947; P=0.043). (3) Establishment and internal and external validation of nomogram: based on the six factors screened out by the multivariate Cox regression model, the nomogram was developed to predict the prognosis of cervical adenocarcinoma patients. The consistency index of the internal and external validation were 0.801 and 0.766, respectively, and the calibration curves matched well with the ideal fitting line. Conclusions: The key to the treatment of cervical adenocarcinoma is to prioritize radical surgery for patients with conditions for radical tumor resection. Compared with concurrent chemoradiotherapy, patients with locally advanced stages (Ⅰb3, Ⅱa2), and Ⅲc (T1, T2) stages cervical adenocarcinoma could benefit from comprehensive treatment based on radical surgery. The nomogram of this study has been validated internally and externally, and show good survival prediction efficacy for cervical adenocarcinoma patients.

[Research progress on physiological changes caused by wearing N95 mask in patients with chronic obstruction pulmonary disease]

N95 mask has been shown to reduce lower airway infections requiring hospitalization, mortality and exacerbation frequency in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease(COPD), and therefore is recommended for all COPD patients by guidelines. However, the coverage of influenza vaccination in Chinese COPD patients is far from satisfactory. The large-scale COVID-19 vaccination may have a positive impact on the attitude towards influenza vaccines, and healthcare professionals should take active measures to improve the physical activation in patients with COPD.

Constraints on Cosmic Strings Using Data from the Third Advanced LIGO-Virgo Observing Run

We search for gravitational-wave signals produced by cosmic strings in the Advanced LIGO and Virgo full O3 dataset. Search results are presented for gravitational waves produced by cosmic string loop features such as cusps, kinks, and, for the first time, kink-kink collisions. A template-based search for short-duration transient signals does not yield a detection. We also use the stochastic gravitational-wave background energy density upper limits derived from the O3 data to constrain the cosmic string tension Gμ as a function of the number of kinks, or the number of cusps, for two cosmic string loop distribution models. Additionally, we develop and test a third model that interpolates between these two models. Our results improve upon the previous LIGO-Virgo constraints on Gμ by 1 to 2 orders of magnitude depending on the model that is tested. In particular, for the one-loop distribution model, we set the most competitive constraints to date: Gμ≲4×10^{-15}. In the case of cosmic strings formed at the end of inflation in the context of grand unified theories, these results challenge simple inflationary models.

[Effects of dexmedetomidine on injury of lungs and CHOP protein expression in elderly patients with lung cancer during one-lung ventilation]

Objective: To evaluate the effect of dexmedetomidine on lung injury and CCAAT/enhancer-binding protein homologous protein (CHOP) expression in elderly patients with lung cancer undergoing thoracoscopic lobectomy. Methods: A total of 120 elderly patients with lung cancer who underwent elective thoracoscopic lobectomy were selected from the Second Affiliated Hospital of Zhengzhou University from October 2018 to March 2019. The random phenotype was divided into dexmedetomidine group (group D, n=60) and control group (group C, n=60). The elapsed time before postoperative awake and spontaneous breathing recovery and agitation occurrence were recorded. The mean arterial pressure (MAP), heart rate (HR), oxygen saturation (SPO(2)), oxygen partial pressure (PaO(2)), alveolar-arterial oxygen partial pressure difference[P(A-a)O(2)], end-tidal carbon dioxide partial pressure (P(ET)CO(2)), and airway pressure peak (P(peak)) were recorded before the anesthetic induction (T(0)), immediately after tracheal intubation (T(1)), immediately after unilateral pulmonary ventilation(T(2)), 1 hour after unilateral pulmonary ventilation (T(3)), immediately after bilateral pulmonary ventilation (T(4)), and at the end of surgery(T(5)). The levels of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin-6 (IL-6), IL-8, IL-10, super oxide dismutase (SOD) and malondialdehyde (MDA)were compared at the time of T(0), T(1), T(2), T(3), T(4) and T(5) in two groups. The ratios of alveolar damage (IQA), apoptotic index (AI), and the expression of CHOP mRNA and their protein in lung tissue were detected. Results: The recovery time of conscious and spontaneous breathing in group D were significantly shorter than that in group C (P<0.05). The MAP and HR of the two groups at T(1)-T(5) were significantly lower than those at T(0)(P<0.05).The levels of P(peak) in group C at T(3)-T(5) was significantly higher than those in group D (P<0.05). The SpO(2) values in the group D at T(1)-T(5) were significantly higher than those in group C (P<0.05). The P(A-a)O(2) values in the group D at T(1)-T(5) was significantly lower than those in group C (P<0.05).The levels of IL-6, IL-8 and MDA in group D at T(1)-T(5) were significantly lower than those in group C(P<0.05). The levels of IL-10 and SOD in group D at T(1)-T(5) were significantly higher than those in group C (P<0.05). The values of IQA, AI, and the expression of CHOP mRNA and their protein in the two groups at T(4) were significantly higher than those at T(2) (P<0.05). The values of IQA, AI, and the expression of CHOP mRNA and their protein in group D at T(4) were significantly lower than those in group C (P<0.05). Conclusions: Dexmedetomidine could attenuate the extent of lung injury in elderly patients with lung cancer undergoing thoracoscopic lobectomy. The pulmonary protective mechanism could be related to the inhibition of inflammatory factors in dexmedetomidine, improving oxidative stress and reducing Chop-mediated apoptosis of lung tissue by the protein.

[The mechanism of HOTAIR regulating the proliferation and apoptosis of prostate cancer cells by targeting down-regulation of miR-152 to improve the expression of FOXR2]

Objective: To clarify the effect of FOXR2 on the proliferation and apoptosis of prostate cancer cells and to reveal the mechanism. Methods: The expression of FOXR2 in clinical samples of prostate cancer were detected by Quantitative Real-time PCR (qRT-PCR) and Western blotting. The CCK8 proliferation kit and the Annexin V-FITC apoptosis kit, flow cytometry were used to detect the proliferation and apoptosis of prostate cancer cells with or without the FOXR2 knockdown. Combined with the results of microRNA chip, we predicted the related miR-152 and detected the relationship between miR-152 and FOXR2 by luciferase reporter gene assay. The correlation between HOTAIR and miR-152 is clearly defined by software prediction and qRT-PCR. Results: FOXR2 had a relatively high expression in the prostate cancer tissue.The mRNA expression of FOXR2 is 4.9 times that of adjacent tissues, and the protein level was also significantly up-regulated. In the PC3 cell line, the specific knock-down of FOXR2 inhibits the proliferation of cells and promotes cell apoptosis. According to the microRNA chip results and luciferase reporter gene assay, we found miR-152 could regulate the expression of FOXR2; and FOXR2 3 'UTR had two miR-152 binding sites, all of which could control the expression of FOXR2. The results of LNCediting and qRT-PCR suggest that HOTAIR is negatively correlated with the expression of miR-152, and is involved in the regulation of miR-152 expression in prostate cancer. Conclusion: FOXR2 up-regulation can promote the proliferation and inhibit the apoptosis of prostate cancer cells because that HOTAIR restrains the expression of miR-152.

[The role of autophagy in the invasion and metastasis of the squamous cell carcinoma of head and neck]

Objective:The aim of this study is to explore the effects of autophagy on the metastasis of the Squamous Cell Carcinoma of Head and Neck (SCCHN) via epithelial to mesenchymal transition (EMT) induced by TGF-β1. Method:Establish the EMT model induced by TGF-β1 in the SCCHN in time/concentration, and the expression of autophagy related protein microtubule associated protein 1 light chain3 (LC3) detected by western blot; Autophagy inhibitor chloroquine (CQ), depressing autophagy, the expression of E-cadherin, cytokeratin, Vimentin and LC3 were examined by Western blot. Wound healing and Transwell invasion assay indicate the effects to metastasis for SCCHN. Result:Autophagy was activated within TGF-β1 induced EMT model in the SCCHN in time/concentration dependently. After autophagy was suppressed, the expression of E-cadherin and cytokeratin increased while vimentin and the capacity of metastasis was reduced compared with control group. Conclusion:TGF-β1 induce EMT and Autophagy in the SCCHN. Autophagy could enhances metastasis in the SCCHN via EMT induced by TGF-β1.

[Advances in the research of three-dimensional skin printing]

As a new technology, three-dimensional printing possesses the characteristics of high precision and strong controllability, which has become a new technology and can be used in tissue engineering. Currently, using three-dimensional printing to build artificial skin has made certain achievement, and experiments in vitro have confirmed that the three-dimensional printing has the possibilities to build artificial skin whose structure and function are close to those of nature skin. However, the technology is not yet very mature and there are still some problems need to be solved, such as the recreation of the cutaneous appendages and the degradation and absorption of the extracellular matrix.

[The correlation between cerebral MRI characteristics of posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome and serum levels of PlGF, sEng in patients with pre-eclampsia]

Objective: To investigate the MRI characteristics of posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome (PRES) in patients with pre-eclampsia(PE) and its correlation with serum placental growth factor (PlGF), soluble endoglin (sEng) and sEng/PlGF ratio. Methods: 34 patients with PE who were admitted to Guangdong Women and Children Hospital from September 2013 to March 2014 were studied retrospectively.13 cases had PRES and 21 cases had normal cerebral MRI. All patients underwent conventional MRI and DWI scanning. The score of brain edema (SBE) were calculated. PlGF, sEng concentrations were measured with ELISA. The levels of PlGF, sEng and sEng/PlGF were compared between the PRES group and the normal MRI groups. The correlation of sEng/PIGF ratio and SBE were studied as well. Results: The PlGF in the PRSE group was (231.4±66.8) ng/L, and in normal cerebral MRI group was (333.6±37.5) ng/L (t= 5.61, P<0.05). The sEng in the PRSE group was (5 256.2±879.6) ng/L, in normal cerebral MRI group was (3 955.6±537.7) ng/L (t=6.53, P<0.01).The sEng/PlGF in the PRSE group was (26.0±10.0) , and in normal cerebral MRI group was (11.9±1.6; t=8.41, P<0.01) , with the cut-off value of 20.0. The sensitivity was 81.8% and the specificity was 85.0%.There was no statistically significant correlation between PlGF, sEng and SBE (P>0.05).There was a positive correlation between the sEng/PlGF ratio and SBE (P>0.05). Conclusion: The value of sEng/PlGF ratio was correlated with brain edema score in PE. The serum sEng/PlGF ratio may be used as a reference for prediction of PRES.

[Advances in the research of application of collagen in three-dimensional bioprinting]

As a new industrial technology with characteristics of high precision and accuracy, the application of three-dimensional bioprinting technology is increasingly wide in the field of medical research. Collagen is one of the most common ingredients in tissue, and it has good biological material properties. There are many reports of using collagen as main composition of " ink" of three-dimensional bioprinting technology. However, the applied collagen is mainly from heterogeneous sources, which may cause some problems in application. Recombinant human source collagen can be obtained from microorganism fermentation by transgenic technology, but more research should be done to confirm its property. This article reviews the advances in the research of collagen and its biological application in three-dimensional bioprinting.

Abnormal interhemispheric resting state functional connectivity of the insula in heroin users under methadone maintenance treatment

Abnormal interhemispheric functional connectivity is attracting more and more attention in the field of substance use. This study aimed to examine 1) the differences in interhemispheric functional connections of the insula with the contralateral insula and other brain regions between heroin users under methadone maintenance treatment (MMT) and healthy controls, and 2) the association between heroin users' interhemispheric insular functional connectivity using resting functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and the results of urine heroin analysis. Sixty male right-handed persons, including 30 with heroin dependence under MMT and 30 healthy controls, were recruited to this study. Resting fMRI experiments and urine heroin analysis were performed. Compared with the controls, the heroin users had a significantly lower interhemispheric insular functional connectivity. They also exhibited lower functional connectivity between insula and contralateral inferior orbital frontal lobe. After controlling for age, educational level and methadone dosage, less deviation of the interhemispheric insula functional connectivity was significantly associated with a lower risk of a positive urine heroin analysis result. Our findings demonstrated that the heroin users under MMT had abnormal long-range and interhemispheric resting functional connections. Those with a less dysfunctional interhemispheric insula functional connectivity had a lower risk of a positive urine heroin test.

Lowering radiation dose during dedicated colorectal cancer MDCT: comparison of low tube voltage and sinogram-affirmed iterative reconstruction at 80 kVp versus blended dual-energy images in a population of patients with low body mass index

PURPOSE

To assess the diagnostic accuracy, cancer staging, image quality, and radiation dose of 80-kVp computed tomography (CT) images for patients with colorectal cancers (CRCs) using sinogram-affirmed iterative reconstruction (SAFIRE).

METHODS

Sixty-four consecutive patients (mean weight 62.5  ±  11.3 kg, mean BMI 24.1  ±  3.3 kg/m(2)) with known CRC underwent dual-energy CT. Data were reconstructed as a weighted average (WA) 120-kVp dataset. Both filtered back projection (FBP) and SAFIRE were applied to reconstruct the WA 120-Kvp (Protocol A, B) and 80-kVp (Protocol C, D) image sets. The image noise, signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), and contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) of the cancers, the normal reference tissues, and the effective dose for each protocol were assessed. The cancer detection, staging, and image quality were evaluated. Analysis of variance was used for statistical analysis.

RESULTS

Compared with the FBP datasets at WA 120-kVp (Protocol A) and 80-kVp (Protocol C), the SAFIRE-reconstructed images (Protocols B, D) demonstrated significantly lower image noise (P  <  0.0083). Protocol D yielded significantly higher CNRs and SNRs for the CRCs and normal reference tissues than did Protocols A and C (P  <  0.0083). Protocol D also exhibited a significantly higher CNR for the CRC and some normal reference tissues than did Protocol B (P  <  0.0083). For hypovascular liver metastases (n  =  10), Protocol D yielded better SNRs and significantly higher CNRs than did Protocol A (P  <  0.0083). Overall, accuracy for tumor staging and liver metastasis was 95.3% (61/64) and 100%, respectively, in all of the 4 protocols. The mean effective dose decreased 41% from the WA 120-kVp to the 80-kVp protocols (6.23 vs. 3.68 mSv).

CONCLUSIONS

The 80-kVp technique with SAFIRE provided high SNR, high CNR, and good accuracy for staging in nonobese patients with CRC. Our study results should be extrapolated to patient populations with a high BMI with caution. Further studies of high BMI patients are therefore warranted.

Added value of diffusion-weighted imaging to MR cholangiopancreatography for the diagnosis of bile duct dilatations

PURPOSE

To investigate the added value of diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) when used with conventional T2-weighted magnetic resonance (MR) imaging (T2WI) and MR cholangiopancreatography (MRCP) for diagnosing bile duct dilatations.

METHODS

Our institutional review board approved this retrospective study protocol and waived the informed consent requirement. The study included 151 consecutive patients (70 men, 81 women) with intra- and/or extra-hepatic bile duct dilatation examined using MR imaging. Two radiologists independently and randomly reviewed 3 image sets (A: MRCP and T2WI; B: DWI; and C: combined T2WI, MRCP, and DWI) at different occasions to differentiate between malignancy, biliary lithiasis, and benign dilatation. The sensitivity, specificity, and diagnostic accuracy of these imaging sets were calculated and compared.

RESULTS

For both readers, combined T2WI, MRCP, and DWI exhibited significantly higher sensitivity and diagnostic accuracy for malignant dilatation, compared with conventional T2WI and MRCP (P < 0.01 for both readers). However, DWI did not significantly affect the sensitivity and diagnostic accuracy for biliary lithiasis or benign dilatation.

CONCLUSION

The addition of DWI to T2WI and MRCP sequences yields significantly higher sensitivity and diagnostic accuracy when examining bile duct dilatations, particularly malignant dilatations.

Development of Bifunctional Gadolinium-Labeled Superparamagnetic Nanoparticles (Gd-MnMEIO) for In Vivo MR Imaging of the Liver in an Animal Model

Liver tumors are common and imaging methods, particularly magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), play an important role in their non-invasive diagnosis. Previous studies have shown that detection of liver tumors can be improved by injection of two different MR contrast agents. Here, we developed a new contrast agent, Gd-manganese-doped magnetism-engineered iron oxide (Gd-MnMEIO), with enhancement effects on both T1- and T2-weighted MR images of the liver. A 3.0T clinical MR scanner equipped with transmit/receiver coil for mouse was used to obtain both T1-weighted spoiled gradient-echo and T2-weighted fast spin-echo axial images of the liver before and after intravenous contrast agent injection into Balb/c mice with and without tumors. After pre-contrast scanning, six mice per group were intravenously injected with 0.1 mmol/kg Gd-MnMEIO, or the control agents, i.e., Gd-DTPA or SPIO. The scanning time points for T1-weighted images were 0.5, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, and 30 min after contrast administration. The post-enhanced T2-weighted images were then acquired immediately after T1-weighted acquisition. We found that T1-weighted images were positively enhanced by both Gd-DTPA and Gd-MnMEIO and negatively enhanced by SPIO. The enhancement by both Gd-DTPA and Gd-MnMEIO peaked at 0.5 min and gradually declined thereafter. Gd-MnMEIO (like Gd-DTPA) enhanced T1-weighted images and (like SPIO) T2-weighted images. Marked vascular enhancement was clearly visible on dynamic T1-weighted images with Gd-MnMEIO. In addition, the T2 signal was significantly decreased at 30 min after administration of Gd-MnMEIO. Whereas the effects of Gd-MnMEIO and SPIO on T2-weighted images were similar (p = 0.5824), those of Gd-MnMEIO and Gd-DTPA differed, with Gd-MnMEIO having a significant T2 contrast effect (p = 0.0086). Our study confirms the feasibility of synthesizing an MR contrast agent with both T1 and T2 shortening effects and using such an agent in vivo. This agent enables tumor detection and characterization in single liver MRI sections.

Altered Functional Connectivity of the Insula and Nucleus Accumbens in Internet Gaming Disorder: A Resting State fMRI Study

AIMS

A possible addiction mechanism has been represented by altered functional connectivity (FC) in the resting state. The aim of this study was to evaluate the FCs of the insula and nucleus accumbens among subjects with Internet gaming disorder (IGD).

METHODS

We recruited 30 males with IGD and 30 controls and evaluated their FC using functional magnetic imaging scanning under resting, a state with relaxation, closed eyes, with inducement to think of nothing systematically, become motionless, and instructed not to fall asleep.

RESULTS

Subjects with IGD had a lower FC with the left insula over the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) and orbital frontal lobe and a higher FC with the insula with the contralateral insula than controls. The inter-hemispheric insula connectivity positively correlated with impulsivity. Further, they had lower FC with the left nucleus accumbens over the left DLPFC and with the right nucleus accumbens over the left DLPFC, and insula and a higher FC with that over the right precuneus.

CONCLUSION

The elevated inter-hemispheric insula FC is found to be associated with impulsivity and might explain why it is involved in IGD. The attenuated frontostriatal suggests that the emotion-driven gaming urge through nucleus accumbens could not be well regulated by the frontal lobe of subjects with IGD.

Pleural Tags on CT Scans to Predict Visceral Pleural Invasion of Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer That Does Not Abut the Pleura

PURPOSE

To evaluate the association of pleural tags with visceral pleural invasion of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) that does not abut the pleural surface.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

This retrospective study was approved by the institutional review board. Informed consent was waived. The study of NSCLC that does not abut the pleura in 141 patients (44 patients [31.2%] with visceral pleural invasion proved by pathologic analysis and 97 patients [68.8%] without pleural invasion) was conducted at a single tertiary center. The pleural tags were classified into three types (type 1, one or more linear pleural tag; type 2, one or more linear pleural tag with soft tissue component at the pleural end; and type 3, one or more soft tissue cord-like pleural tag) and prioritized into types 3, 2, and 1 when more than one type was present. Diagnostic accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV), negative predictive value (NPV), and positive likelihood ratio (LR) were calculated.

RESULTS

In the absence of pleural tags, no pleural invasion was found. The presence of type 2 pleural tags was moderately associated with visceral pleural invasion with the following results: positive LR, 5.06; accuracy, 71%; sensitivity, 36.4%; specificity, 92.8%; PPV, 76.2%; and NPV, 69.6%. Type 1 pleural tags provided weak evidence to rule out visceral pleural invasion (positive LR, 0.38). Type 3 pleural tags indicated minimal increase in the likelihood of visceral pleural invasion (positive LR, 1.68).

CONCLUSION

Type 2 pleural tags on conventional CT images can increase the accuracy of early diagnosis of visceral pleural invasion by NSCLC that does not abut the pleura.

Follow-up for covered stent treatment of carotid blow-out syndrome in patients with head and neck cancer

OBJECTIVE

Carotid blow-out syndrome (CBS) is a life-threatening complication of head and neck cancer (HNC). One of the various methods used for emergency management of CBS is covered stent placement (CSP). Our initial experience in CSP is evaluated and compared with reports in the literature.

METHODS

This study analysed 17 patients with HNC who had received CSP for CBS at Kaohsiung Medical University Chung-Ho Memorial Hospital from May 2005 to December 2013. The medical records and images for these patients were retrospectively reviewed to evaluate the causes of CBS, treatment success rates and complications.

RESULTS

The initial angiography success rate was 100%. Procedural or periprocedural complications were noted in two (12%) cases, both suffering from cerebral vascular accident (CVA). Short-term complications were noted in eight (47%) cases, including four rebleeding cases and four CVA cases. Medium- to long-term complications were noted in nine cases, which included two asymptomatic in-stent thrombosis cases, one symptomatic CVA case, two abscess formation cases and four rebleeding cases. Overall, eight (47%) cases of rebleeding occurred during follow-up. Three of the eight cases were fatal, accounting for 27% of the all-cause mortality.

CONCLUSION

Although CSP is considered effective for achieving haemostasis in patients with HNC with CBS, the medium- to long-term outcomes are unfavourable owing to high risks of rebleeding, CVA and other complications. Therefore, CSP should be considered a temporary life-saving technique rather than a definitive treatment.

ADVANCES IN KNOWLEDGE

Analysis of the relatively large series of patients with HNC in this study suggests that CSP is a useful temporary treatment for CBS.

Computer-aided detection system for chest radiography: reducing report turnaround times of examinations with abnormalities

BACKGROUND

The ability to give high priority to examinations with pathological findings could be very useful to radiologists with large work lists who wish to first evaluate the most critical studies. A computer-aided detection (CAD) system for identifying chest examinations with abnormalities has therefore been developed.

PURPOSE

To evaluate the effectiveness of a CAD system on report turnaround times of chest examinations with abnormalities.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

The CAD system was designed to automatically mark chest examinations with possible abnormalities in the work list of radiologists interpreting chest examinations. The system evaluation was performed in two phases: two radiologists interpreted the chest examinations without CAD in phase 1 and with CAD in phase 2. The time information recorded by the radiology information system was then used to calculate the turnaround times. All chest examinations were reviewed by two other radiologists and were divided into normal and abnormal groups. The turnaround times for the examinations with pathological findings with and without the CAD system assistance were compared.

RESULTS

The sensitivity and specificity of the CAD for chest abnormalities were 0.790 and 0.697, respectively, and use of the CAD system decreased the turnaround time for chest examinations with abnormalities by 44%.

CONCLUSION

The turnaround times required for radiologists to identify chest examinations with abnormalities could be reduced by using the CAD system. This system could be useful for radiologists with large work lists who wish to first evaluate the most critical studies.

Brain correlates of response inhibition in Internet gaming disorder

AIMS

The present study aimed to evaluate the brain correlates of response inhibition among subjects with Internet gaming disorder (IGD).

METHODS

For this purpose, 15 men with IGD for at least 1 year, and 15 controls with no history of IGD were recruited to perform the Go/Nogo task under functional magnetic resonance imaging investigation. Prior to scanning, the subjects were assessed using the Chen Internet Addiction Scale and the Barrett Impulsivity Scale.

RESULTS

The control group exhibited activation of the right supplement motor area (SMA), dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, and caudate for response inhibition. However, the IGD group had a higher impulsivity and lower activity of the right SMA/pre-SMA in comparison to the control group.

CONCLUSIONS

The results obtained suggest that dysfunctional activation of the SMA for response inhibition is one of the candidate mechanisms of IGD.

Comparative pathogenicity of Coxsackievirus A16 circulating and noncirculating strains in vitro and in a neonatal mouse model

An enterovirus 71 (EV71) vaccine for the prevention of hand, foot, and mouth disease (HMFD) is available, but it is not known whether the EV71 vaccine cross-protects against Coxsackievirus (CV) infection. Furthermore, although an inactivated circulating CVA16 Changchun 024 (CC024) strain vaccine candidate is effective in newborn mice, the CC024 strain causes severe lesions in muscle and lung tissues. Therefore, an effective CV vaccine with improved pathogenic safety is needed. The aim of this study was to evaluate the in vivo safety and in vitro replication capability of a noncirculating CVA16 SHZH05 strain. The replication capacity of circulating CVA16 strains CC024, CC045, CC090 and CC163 and the noncirculating SHZH05 strain was evaluated by cytopathic effect in different cell lines. The replication capacity and pathogenicity of the CC024 and SHZH05 strains were also evaluated in a neonatal mouse model. Histopathological and viral load analyses demonstrated that the SHZH05 strain had an in vitro replication capacity comparable to the four CC strains. The CC024, but not the SHZH05 strain, became distributed in a variety of tissues and caused severe lesions and mortality in neonatal mice. The differences in replication capacity and in vivo pathogenicity of the CC024 and SHZH05 strains may result from differences in the nucleotide and amino acid sequences of viral functional polyproteins P1, P2 and P3. Our findings suggest that the noncirculating SHZH05 strain may be a safer CV vaccine candidate than the CC024 strain.

Aberrant brain activation of error processing among adults with attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder

Individuals with adult attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) have a deficit in their cognitive control. The aim of this study was to reveal the brain correlates of the deficits in response inhibition or error processing in adult ADHD. A total of 29 adults with ADHD and 25 control individuals were recruited. They completed an event-related-design Go/No-go task under functional magnetic resonance imaging scanning. Both the ADHD group and the control group exhibited activation of the frontostriatal network when processing response inhibition. They also exhibited activation of the frontoinsula cortex and anterior cingulate in error processing. Adults with ADHD have a lower brain activation of error processing over the right inferior frontal lobe adjacent to the insula than control individuals. The altered frontoinsula cortex activation may represent the mechanism of error processing deficit among adults with ADHD.

Automated detection of endotracheal tubes in paediatric chest radiographs

The aim of this study was to develop an automated method for the detection of endotracheal tube and location of its tip in paediatric chest radiographs. In this method, a seed point was first determined from the line crossing the cervical region and a line path was traced from the seed point. Two features, Lmax and C, were determined from the path and were combined to detect the existence of the endotracheal tube. Multiple thresholds applied to the line path were used to determine the candidate locations for the tip, and the most suitable location was selected from these candidates by analysing the image features. To evaluate the performance of detection of endotracheal tube existence, support vector machine was used to classify the images with and without endotracheal tubes on the basis of Lmax and C. The discriminant performance of the method was evaluated using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis. To evaluate the precision of the detected tip locations, the tip locations in paediatric chest images were annotated by a radiologist. The distance (error) between the detected and annotated locations was used to evaluate detection precision for the tip location. The proposed method was evaluated using 528 images with endotracheal tubes and 816 images without endotracheal tubes. The discriminant performance in this study, evaluated as Az (area under the ROC curve), for detecting the existence of endotracheal tubes on the basis of the two features was 0.943±0.009, and the detection error of the tip location was 1.89±2.01mm. The proposed method obtained high performance results and could be useful for detecting the malposition of endotracheal tubes in paediatric chest radiographs.

Utility of the iodine overlay technique and virtual nonenhanced images for the preoperative T staging of colorectal cancer by dual-energy CT with tin filter technology

Objectives

To evaluate the diagnostic accuracy and the potential radiation dose reduction of dual-energy CT (DECT) for tumor (T) staging of colorectal cancer (CRC) using iodine overlay (IO) and virtual nonenhanced (VNE) images.

Materials and Methods

This retrospective study included 103 consecutive patients who underwent nonenhanced CT and enhanced DECT for preoperative CRC staging. Enhanced weighted-average (WA), IO and VNE images were reconstructed from enhanced 80 kVp and Sn140 kVp scans. Two radiologists assessed image qualities of the true nonenhanced (TNE) and VNE images. For T-staging, another two radiologists independently interpreted all scans in two separate reading sessions: in the first session, only images derived from the single phase DECT acquisition (IO and VNE images) were read. In the second reading session after 30 to 50 (average:42) days, the same assessment was again performed with the TNE and enhanced WA images thereby simulating conventional dual-phase single-energy CT. The tumor node metastasis (TNM) system was used for staging with histopathologic reports as gold standard. Analysis of variance was used for statistical analysis.

Results

The signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) of the tumors and normal reference tissues showed significant correlation between the TNE and VNE images (P<0.01). The mean iodine overlay value (48.4 HU±12.2) and enhancement (49.4 HU±11.8) value of CRCs had no significant difference (P = 0.52).The mean image noise on TNE (5.0±1.1) and VNE (5.3±1.1) images were similar (P = 0.07). The quantitative qualities of the VNE images were mildly inferior to the TNE images. Overall accuracy of T-stage CRC when using single-phase acquisition was slightly better than the dual-phase acquisition (90.3% vs 87.4%) (P = 0.51). The mean dose of the single-phase DECT acquisition was 6.2mSv comparing with 14.3mSv of dual-phase.

Conclusion

Single-phase DECT using IO and VNE images yields a high accuracy in T-staging of CRCs. Thereby, the radiation exposure of the patients can be reduced.

Altered brain activation during response inhibition and error processing in subjects with Internet gaming disorder: a functional magnetic imaging study

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the impulsivity and brain correlates of response inhibition and error processing among subjects with Internet gaming disorder (IGD). We evaluated the response inhibition and error processing by functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) in subjects with IGD and controls. Twenty-six men with IGD for at least 2 years and 23 controls with no history of IGD were recruited as the IGD and control groups, respectively. All subjects performed the event-related designed Go/No-go task under fMRI and completed questionnaires related to Internet addiction and impulsivity. The IGD group exhibited a higher score for impulsivity than the control group. The IGD group also exhibited higher brain activation when processing response inhibition over the left orbital frontal lobe and bilateral caudate nucleus than controls. Both the IGD and control groups exhibited activation of the insula and anterior cingulate cortex during error processing. The activation over the right insula was lower in the subjects with IGD than the control group. Our results support the fact that the fronto-striatal network involved in response inhibition, and the salience network, anchored by the anterior cingulate and insula, contributes to error processing. Further, adults with IGD have impaired insular function in error processing and greater activation of the fronto-striatal network in order to maintain their response inhibition performance.

Automated detection of fovea in fundus images based on vessel-free zone and adaptive Gaussian template

This study developed a computerised method for fovea centre detection in fundus images. In the method, the centre of the optic disc was localised first by the template matching method, the disc-fovea axis (a line connecting the optic disc centre and the fovea) was then determined by searching the vessel-free region, and finally the fovea centre was detected by matching the fovea template around the centre of the axis. Adaptive Gaussian templates were used to localise the centres of the optic disc and fovea for the images with different resolutions. The proposed method was evaluated using three publicly available databases (DIARETDB0, DIARETDB1 and MESSIDOR), which consisted of a total of 1419 fundus images with different resolutions. The proposed method obtained the fovea detection accuracies of 93.1%, 92.1% and 97.8% for the DIARETDB0, DIARETDB1 and MESSIDOR databases, respectively. The overall accuracy of the proposed method was 97.0% in this study.

Brain activation deficit in increased-load working memory tasks among adults with ADHD using fMRI

Working memory (WM) is impaired among adults with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). This study aimed to investigate the brain activation deficit for low-level or increased-load WM among adults with ADHD. A total of 20 adults with ADHD and controls were recruited according to diagnostic interviewing by a psychiatrist. Phonological and visual-spatial 2-back and 3-back tasks were performed under functional magnetic resonance scanning. The results demonstrated that both the adults with ADHD and the controls exhibited activation of the fronto-parietal network for WM, and the intensity was greater in the adult ADHD group. The ADHD group had higher brain activation over the bilateral anterior cingulate, left inferior frontal lobe, hippocampus, and supplementary motor area (SMA) for phonological WM than the control group. When the task loading increased from 2-back to 3-back tasks, the adults with ADHD perceived greater difficulty. The control group exhibited increased brain activation over the frontal-parietal network in response to increased phonological WM load. However, the ADHD group showed decreased brain activation over the left precuneus, insula, and SMA. Further analysis demonstrated that the ADHD group exhibited a greater decrease in brain activation over the left fronto-parietal network, including the precuneus, SMA, insula/inferior frontal lobe, and dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, than the control group. These results suggest that adults with ADHD pay more effort to low demanding phonological WM. On the other hand, brain activation of the left fronto-parietal network is impaired when the demands of WM exceed the capacity of adults with ADHD.

Brain activation for response inhibition under gaming cue distraction in internet gaming disorder

We evaluated neural substrates related to the loss of control in college students with internet gaming disorder (IGD). We hypothesized that deficit in response inhibition under gaming cue distraction was the possible mechanism for the loss of control internet use. Eleven cases of IGD and 11 controls performed Go/NoGo tasks with/without gaming distraction in the functional magnetic resonance imaging scanner. When the gaming picture was shown as background while individuals were performing Go/NoGo tasks, the IGD group committed more commission errors. The control group increased their brain activations more over the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) and superior parietal lobe under gaming cue distraction in comparison with the IGD group. Furthermore, brain activation of the right DLPFC and superior parietal lobe were negatively associated with performance of response inhibition among the IGD group. The results suggest that the function of response inhibition was impaired under gaming distraction among the IGD group, and individuals with IGD could not activate right DLPFC and superior parietal lobe to keep cognitive control and attention allocation for response inhibition under gaming cue distraction. This mechanism should be addressed in any intervention for IGD.

Automated patient identity recognition by analysis of chest radiograph features

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES

The aim of this study was to develop a computerized scheme for automated identity recognition based on chest radiograph features.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

The proposed method was evaluated on a database consisting of 1000 pairs of posteroanterior chest radiographs. The method was based on six features: length of the lung field, size of the heart, area of the body, and widths of the upper, middle, and lower thoracic cage. The values for the six features were determined from a chest image, and absolute differences in feature values between the two images (feature errors) were used as indices of image similarity. The performance of the proposed method was evaluated by receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis. The discriminant performance was evaluated as the area Az under the ROC curve.

RESULTS

The discriminant performance Az of the feature errors for lung field length, heart size, body area, upper cage width, middle cage width, and lower cage width were 0.794 ± 0.005, 0.737 ± 0.007, 0.820 ± 0.008, 0.860 ± 0.005, 0.894 ± 0.006, and 0.873 ± 0.006, respectively. The combination of the six feature errors obtained an Az value of 0.963 ± 0.002.

CONCLUSION

The results indicate that combining the six features yields a high discriminant performance in recognizing patient identity. The method has potential usefulness for automated identity recognition to ensure that chest radiographs are associated with the correct patient.

In vivo magnetic resonance imaging of mice liver tumors using a new gadolinium-based contrast agent

We compared the enhancement effect between a newly synthesized tissue-specific contrast agent, [Gd-DOTA-FPβG], and a commercially available agent, [Gd(DOTA)](-), in a murine model of liver tumor using a clinical magnetic resonance imaging scanner. The colon cancer cell lines with and without β-glucuronidase (βG) expression were implanted into the liver of mice. Self-synthesized gadolinium-based magnetic resonance contrast agent, [Gd(DOTA-FPβG)], was administered to measure enhancement on magnetic resonance images using a commercially available agent, [Gd(DOTA)](-), as control in a clinical 3.0 tesla (T) magnetic resonance scanner. In vivo fluorescence imaging and histopathology of the liver were also performed to compare and correlate with the magnetic resonance studies. The in vivo fluorescence imaging failed to depict a sufficiently intense signal for liver or liver tumor of mice without exposure of the liver following an incision on the abdominal wall. The tissue-specific magnetic resonance agent, [Gd(DOTA-FPβG)], caused significantly stronger enhancement in tumors expressing βG (CT26/mβG-eB7) than in tumors not expressing βG (CT26) (p < 0.05). In the magnetic resonance imaging studies using control agent [Gd(DOTA)](-), the tumors with and without βG expression depicted no significant difference in enhancement on the T1-weighted images. The [Gd(DOTA-FPβG)] also provided significantly more contrast uptake in the CT26/mβG-eB7 tumor than in the normal liver parenchyma, whereas the [Gd(DOTA)](-) did not. This study confirms that better contrast enhancement can be readily detected in vivo by the use of a tissue-specific magnetic resonance contrast agent to target tumor cells with specific biomarkers in a clinical magnetic resonance imaging scanner.

Brain correlates of craving for online gaming under cue exposure in subjects with Internet gaming addiction and in remitted subjects

This study aimed to evaluate brain correlates of cue-induced craving to play online games in subjects with Internet gaming addiction (IGA), subjects in remission from IGA and controls. The craving response was assessed by event-related design of functional magnetic resonance images (fMRIs). Fifteen subjects with IGA, 15 in remission from IGA and 15 controls were recruited in this study. The subjects were arranged to view the gaming screenshots and neutral images under investigation of fMRIs. The results showed that bilateral dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC), precuneus, left parahippocampus, posterior cingulate and right anterior cingulate were activated in response to gaming cues in the IGA group and their activation was stronger in the IGA group than those in the control group. Their region-of-interest was also positively correlated with subjective gaming urge under cue exposure. These activated brain areas represent the brain circuit corresponding to the mechanism of substance use disorder. Thus, it would suggest that the mechanism of IGA is similar to substance use disorder. Furthermore, the IGA group had stronger activation over right DLPFC and left parahippocampus than did the remission group. The two areas would be candidate markers for current addiction to online gaming and should be investigated in future studies.

The brain activations for both cue-induced gaming urge and smoking craving among subjects comorbid with Internet gaming addiction and nicotine dependence

Internet gaming addiction (IGA) has been classified as an addictive disorder in the proposed DSM 5 draft. However, whether its underlying addiction mechanism is similar to other substance use disorders has not been confirmed. The present functional magnetic resonance images study is aimed at evaluating the brain correlates of cue-induced gaming urge or smoking craving in subjects with both IGA and nicotine dependence to make a simultaneous comparison of cue induced brain reactivity for gaming and smoking. For this purpose, 16 subjects with both IGA and nicotine dependence (comorbid group) and 16 controls were recruited from the community. All subjects were made to undergo 3-T fMRIs scans while viewing images associated with online games, smoking, and neutral images, which were arranged according to an event-related design. The resultant image data was analyzed with full factorial and conjunction analysis of SPM5. The results demonstrate that anterior cingulate, and parahippocampus activates higher for both cue-induced gaming urge and smoking craving among the comorbid group in comparison to the control group. The conjunction analysis demonstrates that bilateral parahippocampal gyrus activates to a greater degree for both gaming urge and smoking craving among the comorbid group in comparison to the control group. Accordingly, the study demonstrates that both IGA and nicotine dependence share similar mechanisms of cue-induced reactivity over the fronto-limbic network, particularly for the parahippocampus. The results support that the context representation provided by the parahippocampus is a key mechanism for not only cue-induced smoking craving, but also for cue-induced gaming urge.

Development of a Gd(III)-based receptor-induced magnetization enhancement (RIME) contrast agent for β-glucuronidase activity profiling

β-Glucuronidase is a key lysosomal enzyme and is often overexpressed in necrotic tumor masses. We report here the synthesis of a pro receptor-induced magnetization enhancement (pro-RIME) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) contrast agent ([Gd(DOTA-FPβGu)]) for molecular imaging of β-glucuronidase activity in tumor tissues. The contrast agent consists of two parts, a gadolinium complex and a β-glucuronidase substrate (β-d-glucopyranuronic acid). The binding association constant (KA) of [Gd(DOTA-FPβGu)] is 7.42 × 10(2), which is significantly lower than that of a commercially available MS-325 (KA = 3.0 × 10(4)) RIME contrast agent. The low KA value of [Gd(DOTA-FPβGu)] is due to the pendant β-d-glucopyranuronic acid moiety. Therefore, [Gd(DOTA-FPβGu)] can be used for detection of β-glucuronidase through RIME modulation. The detail mechanism of enzymatic activation of [Gd(DOTA-FPβGu)] was elucidated by LC-MS. The kinetics of β-glucuronidase catalyzed hydrolysis of [Eu(DOTA-FPβGu)] at pH 7.4 best fit the Miechalis-Menten kinetic mode with Km = 1.38 mM, kcat = 3.76 × 10(3), and kcat/Km = 2.72 × 10(3) M(-1) s(-1). The low Km value indicates high affinity of β-glucuronidase for [Gd(DOTA-FPβGu)] at physiological pH. Relaxometric studies revealed that T1 relaxivity of [Gd(DOTA-FPβGu)] changes in response to the concentration of β-glucuronidase. Consistent with the relaxometric studies, [Gd(DOTA-FPβGu)] showed significant change in MR image signal in the presence of β-glucuronidase and HSA. In vitro and in vivo MR images demonstrated appreciable differences in signal enhancement in the cell lines and tumor xenografts in accordance to their expression levels of β-glucuronidase.

Deletion of p47phox attenuates the progression of diabetic nephropathy and reduces the severity of diabetes in the Akita mouse

AIMS/HYPOTHESIS

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) contribute to diabetes-induced glomerular injury and endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress-induced beta cell dysfunction, but the source of ROS has not been fully elucidated. Our aim was to determine whether p47(phox)-dependent activation of NADPH oxidase is responsible for hyperglycaemia-induced glomerular injury in the Akita mouse, a model of type 1 diabetes mellitus resulting from ER stress-induced beta cell dysfunction.

METHODS

We examined the effect of deleting p47 (phox) (also known as Ncf1), the gene for the NADPH oxidase subunit, on diabetic nephropathy in the Akita mouse (Ins2 (WT/C96Y)) by studying four groups of mice: (1) non-diabetic mice (Ins2 (WT/WT)/p47 (phox+/+)); (2) non-diabetic p47 (phox)-null mice (Ins2 (WT/WT)/p47 (phox-/-)); (3) diabetic mice: (Ins2 (WT/C96Y)/p47 (phox+/+)); and (4) diabetic p47 (phox)-null mice (Ins2 (WT/C96Y)/p47 (phox-/-)). We measured the urinary albumin excretion rate, oxidative stress, mesangial matrix expansion, and plasma and pancreatic insulin concentrations in 16-week-old mice; we also measured glucose tolerance and insulin sensitivity, islet and glomerular NADPH oxidase activity and subunit expression, and pro-fibrotic gene expression in 8-week-old mice. In addition, we measured NADPH oxidase activity, subunit expression and pro-fibrotic gene expression in high glucose-treated murine mesangial cells.

RESULTS

Deletion of p47 (phox) reduced kidney hypertrophy, oxidative stress and mesangial matrix expansion, and also reduced hyperglycaemia by increasing pancreatic and circulating insulin concentrations. p47 (phox-/-) mice exhibited improved glucose tolerance, but modestly decreased insulin sensitivity. Deletion of p47 (phox) attenuated high glucose-induced activation of NADPH oxidase and pro-fibrotic gene expression in glomeruli and mesangial cells.

CONCLUSIONS/INTERPRETATION

Deletion of p47 (phox) attenuates diabetes-induced glomerular injury and beta cell dysfunction in the Akita mouse.

Comparison of Gd-Bz-TTDA, Gd-EOB-DTPA, and Gd-BOPTA for dynamic MR imaging of the liver in rat models

To evaluate the competitive potential of a new lipophilic paramagnetic complex, Gd-Bz-TTDA [4-benzyl-3,6,10-tri (carboxymethyl)-3,6,10-triazado-decanedioic acid] compared with two other commercially available MR hepatobiliary contrast agents, gadobenate dimeglumine (Gd-BOPTA) and gadoxetic acid (Gd-EOB-DTPA), dynamic MR imaging studies were performed on normal and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) rat models using a 1.5-Tesla MR scanner. The results indicate that normal rats that were injected with 0.1 mmol/kg Gd-Bz-TTDA showed significantly more intense and persistent liver enhancement than those that were injected with the same dose of Gd-EOB-DTPA or Gd-BOPTA. All of these agents showed similar enhancement patterns in the implanted HCC. The liver-lesion contrast-to-noise ratios were higher and more persistent in rats that were injected with Gd-Bz-TTDA. These results indicate that Gd-Bz-TTDA is comparable with the commercially available hepatobiliary agents, Gd-EOB-DTPA and Gd-BOPTA, and can result in more intense and prolonged liver enhancement while still providing better liver-lesion discrimination. These results warrant further large-scale studies.

A computerized method for automated identification of erect posteroanterior and supine anteroposterior chest radiographs

A computerized scheme was developed for automated identification of erect posteroanterior (PA) and supine anteroposterior (AP) chest radiographs. The method was based on three features, the tilt angle of the scapula superior border, the tilt angle of the clavicle and the extent of radiolucence in lung fields, to identify the view of a chest radiograph. The three indices A(scapula), A(clavicle) and C(lung) were determined from a chest image for the three features. Linear discriminant analysis was used to classify PA and AP chest images based on the three indices. The performance of the method was evaluated by receiver operating characteristic analysis. The proposed method was evaluated using a database of 600 PA and 600 AP chest radiographs. The discriminant performances Az of A(scapula), A(clavicle) and C(lung) were 0.878 ± 0.010, 0.683 ± 0.015 and 0.962 ± 0.006, respectively. The combination of the three indices obtained an Az value of 0.979 ± 0.004. The results indicate that the combination of the three indices could yield high discriminant performance. The proposed method could provide radiologists with information about the view of chest radiographs for interpretation or could be used as a preprocessing step for analyzing chest images.

ηπ+ π- resonant structure around 1.8 GeV/c(2) and η(1405) in J/ψ → ωηπ+ π-

We present results of a study of the decay J/ψ → ωηπ+ π- using a sample of (225.2 ± 2.8) × 10(6) J/ψ events collected by the BESIII detector, and report the observation of a new process J/ψ → ωX(1870) with a statistical significance of 7.2σ, in which X(1870) decays to a(0)(±)(980)π±. Fitting to ηπ+ π- mass spectrum yields a mass M = 1877.3 ± 6.3(stat)(-7.4)(+3.4)(syst) MeV/c(2), a width Γ = 57 ± 12(stat)(-4)(+19)(syst) MeV/c(2), and a product branching fraction B(J/ψ → ωX) × B(X→a(0)(±)(980)π±) × B(a(0) (±)(980) → ηπ±) = [1.50 ± 0.26(stat)(-0.36)(+0.72) (syst)] × 10(-4). Signals for J/ψ → ωf(1)(1285) and J/ψ → ω η(1405) are also clearly observed and measured.

Observation of χ(c1) decays into vector meson pairs φφ, ωω, and ωφ

Using (106±4)×10⁻⁶ ψ(3686) events accumulated with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII e⁺e⁻ collider, we present the first measurement of decays of χ(c1) to vector meson pairs φφ, ωω, and ωφ. The branching fractions are measured to be (4.4±0.3±0.5)×10⁻⁴, (6.0±0.3±0.7)×10⁻⁴, and (2.2±0.6±0.2)×10⁻⁵, for χ(c1)→φφ, ωω, and ωφ, respectively, which indicates that the hadron helicity selection rule is significantly violated in χ(cJ) decays. In addition, the measurement of χ(cJ)→ωφ provides the first indication of the rate of doubly OZI-suppressed χ(cJ) decay. Finally, we present improved measurements for the branching fractions of χ(c0) and χ(c2) to vector meson pairs.

Confirmation of the X(1835) and observation of the resonances X(2120) and X(2370) in J/ψ→γπ+π-η'

With a sample of (225.2±2.8)×10(6) J/ψ events registered in the BESIII detector, J/ψ→γπ(+)π(-)η(') is studied using two η(') decay modes: η(')→π(+)π(-)η and η(')→γρ(0). The X(1835), which was previously observed by BESII, is confirmed with a statistical significance that is larger than 20σ. In addition, in the π(+)π(-)η(') invariant-mass spectrum, the X(2120) and the X(2370), are observed with statistical significances larger than 7.2σ and 6.4σ, respectively. For the X(1835), the angular distribution of the radiative photon is consistent with expectations for a pseudoscalar.

Evidence for ψ' decays into γπ0 and γη

The decays ψ'→γπ(0), γη and γη' are studied using data collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII e(+)e(-) collider. The processes ψ'→γπ(0) and ψ'→γη are observed for the first time with signal significances of 4.6σ and 4.3σ, respectively. The branching fractions are determined to be B(ψ'→γπ(0))=(1.58±0.40±0.13)×10(-6), B(ψ'→γη)=(1.38±0.48±0.09)×10(-6), and B(ψ'→γη')=(126±3±8)×10(-6), where the first errors are statistical and the second ones systematic.

Quantitative assessment of image quality in 64-slice-computed tomography of coronary arteries in subjects undergoing screening for coronary artery disease

Accurate and consistent visualization of the entire coronary system with high-grade imaging quality is crucial for routine applications of multi-detector-computed tomography (MDCT) coronary angiography. To determine the imaging quality of 64-slice-MDCT coronary angiography, we respectively explored the quantitative parameters of imaging quality in 105 consecutive subjects (71 men, 34 women; aged 58.66 +/- 10.62 years) who underwent 64-slice-MDCT coronary angiography to screen for coronary disease. The interobserver agreement for semi-quantitative image quality, visible length, signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) of the coronary arteries was good. The SNR and CNR of the proximal segments of the coronary arteries were superior to that of the distal segments of coronary arteries (p < 0.001). The visible length of the stenosed right coronary artery was significantly shorter than that of the non-stenosed right coronary artery (p = 0.03). The SNR and CNR of the stenosed and non-stenosed coronary arteries revealed no significant difference (p > 0.05). Body weight and body mass index were inversely related to the SNR and CNR of the aorta (p < 0.001). In conclusion, 64-slice-MDCT coronary angiography can provide excellent imaging quality of coronary arteries in subjects undergoing screening for coronary disease, although the SNR and CNR were relatively low at the distal segments of coronary arteries.
