Chemical Properties, Ruminal Fermentation, Gas Production and Digestibility of Silages Composed of Spineless Cactus and Tropical Forage Plants for Sheep Feeding

The aim was to evaluate the chemical composition, carbohydrates, protein fractionation and in vitro gas production of silages composed of spineless cactus and tropical forages and their effect on sheep performance. Treatments consisted of silages: corn silage (CS), spineless cactus silage (SCS), spineless cactus + gliricidia (SCG), spineless cactus + buffel grass silage (SCBG) and spineless cactus + pornunça (SCP). Silos were opened 60 days after ensiling, and analyses were carried out. The digestibility test lasted for 36 days, with eight animals per treatment. A completely randomized design was adopted. Considering carbohydrate fractionation, CS, SCS and SCBG silages had higher total carbohydrate content (p = 0.001). The SCS silage presented a higher A + B1 fraction (p = 0.001). The SCBG and SCG silages showed a higher B2 fraction (p < 0.0001) compared to the CS and SCS silages. The SCBG and SCP silages presented a higher C fraction (p = 0.001). For protein fractionation, the SCP and SCG silages showed higher crude protein contents (p = 0.001). The CS and SCS silages showed a higher A fraction (p = 0.001). The SCBG silage presented a higher B1 + B2 fraction (p = 0.001). The SCG silage showed a higher B3 fraction (p = 0.006) compared to SCBG silage. The SCS and SCP silages showed a higher C fraction (p = 0.001). Exclusive SCS silage showed higher in vitro dry matter digestibility (p = 0.001), dry matter degradability (p = 0.001) and total gas production (p = 0.001). The use of the SCBG, SCP and SCG silages to feed sheep increased the dry matter intake (p < 0.001). Sheep fed the SCG silage showed greater dry matter and crude protein digestibility compared to the sheep fed the CS, SCS and SCP silages (p = 0.002). There was a higher water intake (p < 0.001) with the use of the SCS and SCG silages to feed the sheep. The SCP and SCG silages provided a greater intake (p < 0.001) and excretion (p < 0.001) of nitrogen by the animals. Although there were no differences between the treatments for daily gains, lambs that received the spineless cactus-based silage associated with tropical forages showed higher gains (160-190 g/day) than lambs that received CS silage (130 g/day). Thus, the use of spineless cactus associated with buffelgrass, pornunça and gliricidia to prepare mixed silages (60:40) to feed sheep has potential use to feed sheep, with positive effects on nutrient degradation and increases in dry matter intake. Under experimental conditions, we recommend the exclusive use of spineless cactus silage associated with buffel grass, pornunça and gliricidia in feeding sheep in semi-arid regions, as it provides nutrients, water and greater daily gains compared to corn silage.

Fermentation Profile, Aerobic Stability, and Chemical and Mineral Composition of Cactus Pear Silages with Different Inclusion Levels of Gliricidia Hay

Cactus pear is used in large proportions in diets for small ruminants in semiarid regions. However, its exclusive use is not recommended due to the low fiber and crude protein content and the high water and mineral content, leading to metabolic disorders, low dry matter intake, and weight loss. The use of mixed cactus silage associated with protein and fibrous sources seeks to overcome the deficits in dry matter, fiber and crude protein, aiming to improve the nutritional quality of the diets that will be offered to ruminants. Thus, the use of gliricidia hay in cactus pear silages could represent an important alternative to improve the nutritional and fermentative characteristics of the ensiled material. Therefore, our aim was to evaluate the fermentation dynamics, nutritional characteristics, and aerobic stability of mixed silages of cactus pear combined with different levels of gliricidia hay. This was a completely randomized experimental design with five treatments and five repetitions. The treatments consisted of different levels of inclusion of gliricidia hay (0, 10, 20, 30, and 40% on a dry matter basis) in the composition of mixed cactus pear silages. The inclusion of gliricidia hay in the composition of mixed silages of cactus pear resulted in a quadratic effect for dry matter recovery, pH, NH3-N, buffering capacity, aerobic stability, ether extract, P, K, Na, and Zn (p < 0.05). There was a reduction in density, effluent losses, maximum pH, mineral matter, non-fiber carbohydrates, Ca, Mg, Fe, and Mn (p < 0.05), and an increase in the time to reach maximum pH as well as an upward trend in pH, dry matter, organic matter, crude protein, neutral detergent fiber, acid detergent fiber, and B (p < 0.05). Under experimental conditions, the inclusion of gliricidia hay between 20 and 30% in cactus pear-based silage provided an improvement to the chemical composition and fermentation parameters of the silages.

Changes in the physiological, hematological and parasitological parameters of Dorper sheep in relation to residual feed intake and confinement environment

The selection of animals with greater feed efficiency has unknown parasitological and physiological parameters when confined in full sun or shade. Thus, we aimed to assess the effect of residual feed intake (RFI) and the confinement environment on the hematological, parasitological and physiological parameters in male Dorper sheep (n = 60; 30 with positive RFI and 30 with negative RFI) distributed in 2 confinement environments (full sun and shade), in a 2 × 2 factorial scheme, with 15 animals for treatment. Animals kept in the shade showed an increase (P < 0.05) of erythrocytes, hemoglobin and albumin. Animals kept in full sun showed higherOocysts gamma glutamyltransferase, direct bilirubin, transaminase aspartate and respiratory rate (P<0.05). There was a higher incidence of Eimeria spp oocysts in RFI negative animals (P<0.05). Positive RFI animals increased respiratory rate (P<0.05). The RFI did not influence the blood parameters of Dorper sheep, however, it had an effect on respiratory rate and presence of Eimeria spp. oocysts. Thermal environment promoted changes in blood parameters and the physiological parameters of Dorper sheep.

Interaction between residual feed intake and thermal environment on performance, nitrogen balance, ingestive behavior and carcass yield of dorper lambs

Residual feed intake (RFI) is a nutritional variable used in genetic improvement programs, the relationship between the environment and the availability of energy and protein in the diet has not yet been explored. Thus, the aim was to evaluate interactions between RFI and thermal environment on performance, nitrogen balance, ingestive behavior and carcass yield of Dorper lambs receiving diets containing different concentrate levels. Dorper lambs (male, n = 64, 17.83 ± 2.43 kg and 110 ± 10 days of age) were confined individually for 40 days for RFI classification. Lambs were separated into positive RFI (n = 30) and negative RFI (n = 30) and remained confined for another 60 days. The animals were distributed in a randomized block design, with a 2 × 2 × 3 factorial scheme, with 2 confinement environments (full sun or shade), 2 groups of feed efficiency (RFI positive or RFI negative) and three diets containing different concentrate levels (30, 45 and 60%), with 5 replications in each treatment. Isolated effects of concentrate level were observed for dry matter intake and digestibility, feeding, rumination, idle and chewing times, feeding efficiency, ingested, excreted and absorbed nitrogen, and on cooling losses, hot and cold carcass yield (P < 0.05). There was an effect of environment × concentrate interaction on performance, retained nitrogen and nitrogen balance (P < 0.05). There was an effect of RFI × environment interaction on the dry matter rumination efficiency, hot and cold carcass weight (P < 0.05). Under experimental conditions, RFI did not influence the productive performance of Dorper lambs. Interactions between environment and diet indicate better performance for Dorper lamb confined in the shade and receiving a higher proportion of concentrate. Animals with negative RFI show better performance and carcass weight when confined in shade, while animals with positive RFI showed better responses to these variables when confined in full sun.

Thermoregulatory responses and ingestive behavior of sheep subjected to water restriction and high- and low-energy diets in a semi-arid environment

The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of water restriction and low- and high-energy diets on sheep's thermoregulatory responses and ingestive behavior. Forty sheep, non-castrated, with an average body weight of 18.85 kg (SD = 2.80 kg) and an average age of 5 months were assigned to a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement, comprising 2 diets (high- and low-energy) and 2 water offers (ad libitum and 50% water restriction), with 10 replicates. Thermoregulatory responses were evaluated in two periods (morning and afternoon). There was an interaction effect of Diet x Water supply x Periods on respiratory rate (P < 0.05). High-energy diets resulted in increased heart rate, idleness, dry matter feeding and rumination efficiency, and water intake. Low-energy diets increased feeding time, rumination time, the number of ruminal cuds, chews per day, total chewing time, neutral detergent fiber intake and rumination efficiency, number of ruminations per day, average duration of rumination, and defecation frequency. Water supply affected heart rate and idleness (P < 0.05). Sheep had higher values of heart rate and rectal and surface temperatures during the afternoon (P < 0.05). Water restriction combined with a low-energy diet and high environmental temperature leads to a reduction in the respiratory rate of Santa Inês crossbred sheep. Regardless of the dietary energy value, water restriction by 50% of the daily requirement of sheep reduces dry matter intake and increases idleness.

Effects of different diets on Aedes aegypti adults: improving rearing techniques for sterile insect technique

The aim was to evaluate the effect of different energy diets available in adulthood on the longevity, dispersal capacity and sexual performance of Aedes aegypti produced under a mass-rearing system. To evaluate the effects of diets in relation to the survival of the adult male insects of Ae. aegypti, six treatments were used: sucrose at a concentration of 10%, as a positive control (sack10); starvation, as a negative control (starvation); sucrose at a concentration of 20% associated with 1 g/l of ascorbic acid (sac20vitC); wild honey in a concentration of 10% (honey10); demerara sugar in a 10% concentration (demerara10); and sucrose at a concentration of 20% associated with 1 g/l of ascorbic acid and 0.5 g/l of amino acid proline (sac20vitCPr). Each treatment had 16 cages containing 50 adult males. For the tests of flight ability and propensity to copulation, five treatments were used (saca10; sac20vitC; mel10; demerara10; and sac20vitCPr), with males each for flight ability and females copulated by a single male for copulation propensity. The diet composed of sucrose at a concentration of 20% associated with ascorbic acid, as an antioxidant, improved the survival, flight ability and propensity to copulate in Ae. aegypti males under mass-rearing conditions, and may be useful to enhance the performance of sterile males, thus improving the success of sterile insect technique programmes.

Non-invasive methods to quantify the carcass parameters of sheep: Interaction between thermal environment and residual feed intake

The thermal environment is important in unit production because the perception of thermal stress can reduce fertility, and productive performance, therefore its management is necessary. The use of non-invasive methods, such as infrared thermography and real-time ultrasonography, are widely used to evaluate indicators in animal production, without the need to slaughter the animals. Thus, we aimed to assess the effect of the thermal environment on the physiological parameters and carcass characteristics of Dorper sheep with positive and negative residual feed intake (RFI) using infrared thermography and real-time ultrasonography techniques. Twenty uncastrated male Dorper sheep (17.8 ± 2.4 kg) were confined for 40 days for RFI classification. Sheep were separated into positive RFI (n = 10) and negative RFI (n = 10). The experimental design was in randomized blocks, in a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement, with 2 thermal environments (full sun or shade) and two feed efficiency groups (positive RFI or negative RFI), with 5 replications. The sheep remained in confinement for 60 days. The animals were slaughtered at the end of the experiment and the carcasses dissected for tissue separation. Rectal temperature (RT) and respiratory rate (RR) were measured at two times (14:00 h and 18:00 h) for periods of 5 days. The RR was determined by indirect auscultation of heart sounds at the level of the laryngotracheal region. The RT was measured introduced a digital clinical thermometer into the animal's rectum. Surface temperature (ST) was obtained using a thermographic infrared camera, collecting the temperatures of the eyeball and skin surface in the regions of the head, ribs, rump, flank and shin. Sheep confined in full sun showed higher RR (P = 0.0001), ST ribs (P = 0.0020), ST rumb (P = 0.0055), ST flank (P = 0.0001) and heat tolerance coefficient (HTC) (P = 0.0010). For sheep confined in full sun, a strong correlation was observed between the RR and the mean ST (MST; r = 0.6826; P = 0.0236) and between the final loin eye area (LEAf) with the real LEA (LEAr) (r = 0.9263; P = 0.0001) and slaughter body weight (SBW) (r = 0.7532; P = 0.0325). For negative RFI sheep, a positive correlation was observed between the RR and the ST rump (r = 0.7343; P = 0.0025) and ST ribs (r = 0.6560; P = 0.0178) and the MST (r = 0.7435; P = 0.0001), between the MST and the LEAr (r = 0.6837; P = 0.0025) and the final LEA (r = 0.6771; P = 0.0144), and between the final LEA and LEAr (r = 0.9942; P = 0.0001), BW (r = 0.8415; P = 0.0277) and MST (r = 0.6771; P = 0.0045). Positive RFI sheep confined to shade showed a high correlation between final LEA and LEAr (r = 0.9372; P = 0.0001). The use of shading in confined Dorper sheep, regardless of the RFI classification, reduces the effects of heat stress on physiological parameters.

Effect of different levels of sodium in water on performance, carcass yield, and meat quality of slow-growing chickens

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of sodium (Na) levels in the drinking water on the performance, carcass yield, and meat quality of slow-growing chickens. A completely randomized design with 4 treatments (4.90; 32.30; 60.53; and 101.0 mg/L of Na in water) and 6 replications, with 20 birds per experimental unit, was adopted. The treatments are evaluated in the following: 10 to 25, 10 to 39, and 10 to 54 days. For slow-growing chickens from 10 to 25 days, the Na levels in the drinking water promoted a quadratic effect for water and feed intake (p<0.05). The inclusion of Na in the drinking water offered to slow-growing chickens from 10 to 39 days resulted in a reduction in voluntary water intake (p<0.05). For slow-growing chickens from 10 to 54 days, the Na levels in the drinking water promoted a quadratic effect for water intake and feed conversion (p<0.05). After 54 days, the slow-growing chickens were slaughtered and it was observed that the Na inclusion in the drinking water offered to slow-growing chickens provided a quadratic effect for cold carcass, breast, and kidney weights and for kidney and liver yields (p<0.05). Liver weight was reduced with increasing Na levels in the drinking water (p<0.05). For the breast cut, the Na levels in the drinking water promoted a quadratic effect for pH24h, drip loss, cooking loss, protein, and fat and an increase in shear force (p<0.05). For the thigh cut, the Na levels in the drinking water increased the pH24h and reduced drip loss and shear force (p<0.05), and a quadratic effect was observed for moisture and fat (p<0.05). Levels of up to 60.53 mg/L of Na promote an increase in feed intake, which provided a higher breast weight and protein content with reduced fat and drip loss.

Grape skin flour obtained from wine processing as an antioxidant in beef burgers

The objective of this study was to determine the best level of wine making by-product meal (WBM) as a natural antioxidant to replace butylhydroxytoluene (BHT) in beef burger stored at -20 °C for up to 120 days. The treatments consisted of control (basic formulation - BF, without antioxidant); BF with BHT; and BF with WBM0.5, WBM1.0, WBM1.5, and WBM2.0, with 0.5, 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0 g WBM/100 g BF, respectively. Up to 60 days of storage, the lipid oxidation value between BHT and WBM0.5 treatments did not differ and were lower than the values presented by the other treatments. On day 90 and 120, the lipid oxidation values of treatments BHT, WBM0.5, and WBM1.0 did not differ and were lower than the values presented by WBM1.5 and WBM2.0 treatments. Burgers from all treatments with WBM inclusion had crude fiber values above 3 g/100 g. WBM1.5 and WBM2.0 treatments had the worst scores for appearance, aroma, juiciness and tenderness, in addition to the highest cooking losses. WBM can be used at up to 1 g/100 g to replace BHT in frozen beef burgers. Higher levels of WBM inclusion increased lipid oxidation and negatively affected the sensory quality of burgers.

Histological and physical-mechanical characteristics of the skin of Dorper sheep related to residual feed intake and the confinement environment

The aim was to evaluate the effect of residual feed intake (RFI) on the histological, physical and mechanical characteristics of the sheep skin confined in full sun or shade. Dorper sheep (n = 64), male, with an initial bodyweight of 17.8 ± 2.43 kg was confined for 40 days to determine the RFI. After classification, 30 animals with positive RFI and 30 animals with negative RFI were selected, which were distributed in 2 confinement environments. This was a factorial arrangement of 2 (groups of animals-positive RFI and negative RFI) × 2 (environments-full sun and shade), with 15 animals for each combination of factors. The sheep remained in confinement for 60 days. After slaughter, skins were divided in half, and fragments were collected from the right portion for histological sections. The left part of each skin was subjected to tanning. Interaction effect RFI × environment was found in the evaluation of leather fragments in the horizontal direction on elongation at break, leather thickness and tear strength (p < 0.05). An isolated effect of the environment was found on elongation at break of leather fragments in the evaluation on the vertical direction (p = 0.01) and on the number of secondary follicles during the histological evaluation of the dorsal and lateral regions of the skin (p < 0.05). An effect of the interaction RFI × environment was observed for the thermostatic layer of the hip region (p = 0.03). Sheep with positive RFI and kept in confinement in full sun have a leather with greater elongation at break and tear strength, important aspects in determining the quality of the product by the leather industry.

Fermentation dynamics, nutritional quality, and heating capacity of mixed silages of elephant grass (Pennisetum purpureum Schum) and Leucaena (Leucaena leucocephala)

Leucaena has been used to make mixed silages to obtain nutritional enrichment of the silages. Thus, the inclusion of Leucaena as an additive in mixed elephant grass silages can reduce fermentation losses, and increase the nutritional value and aerobic stability of the mixed silage without changing the fermentation profile. This study evaluated the fermentation profile, nutritional composition, and aerobic stability of elephant grass silages combined with different levels of Leucaena. A total of five inclusion levels of Leucaena (0, 20, 40, 60, and 80% on a dry matter basis) were added to elephant grass silages. A completely randomized design was adopted, with 5 treatments and 3 repetitions, totaling 15 experimental silos that were opened after 30 days of sealing. Fermentation profile, chemical composition, and aerobic stability were analyzed. A descriptive analysis of temperature and pH peaks during aerobic stability was performed. The increase in the inclusion of Leucaena in the composition of silages reduced gas and effluent losses, neutral and acid detergent fiber, cellulose, lignin, total and fiber carbohydrates, and total digestible nutrients, and resulted in increased dry matter, ether extract, and crude protein. A quadratic effect of treatments was found for the temperature to reach the maximum pH (P=0.009). Aerobic stability remained constant after 40% Leucaena inclusion in the composition of elephant grass silages. The inclusion of Leucaena up to 80% in the composition of elephant grass silages reduces fermentation losses, promotes a nutritional increase, and increases the aerobic stability of the silages.

Fermentation profile, aerobic stability, chemical and mineral composition of silages of mango combined with cocoa pod husk meal

The objective was to evaluate the fermentation profile, aerobic stability, chemical composition, and mineral content of silages of mango combined with cocoa pod husk meal. A completely randomized design was adopted, including four levels (65, 70, 75, and 80%) and five repetitions, totaling 20 experimental silos that were opened after 90 days of sealing. Increasing mango levels in the silages increased the dry matter recovery, total carbohydrates, and fraction B2 of carbohydrates, and reduced gas losses, dry matter, and mineral matter. The quadratic effect was found for pH, buffering capacity, potassium, boron, iron, and nitrogen fractions A and B1 + B2. Using unconventional products such as mango combined with cocoa pod husk meal for silage making can reduce the cost of food supplementation for ruminants, and the environmental contamination. 

Perfil fermentativo, calidad nutricional y estabilidad aerobia de ensilajes mezclados de hierba elefante (Pennisetum purpureum Schum) y maní forrajero (Arachis pintoi)

Objetivo. Determinar el perfil fermentativo, composición centesimal y estabilidad aerobia de ensilajes mezclados de hierba-elefante combinadas con niveles de maní forrajero. Materiales y métodos. Distintos niveles de maní forrajero (0,0, 20,0, 40,0, 60,0 y el 80,0% en la base de la materia fresca) se adicionaron a los ensilajes de hierba-elefante. Se adoptó el delineamento enteramente casualizado, con 5 tratamientos y 3 repeticiones, totalizando 15 silos experimentales que se abrieron tras 30 días de sellados. Perfil fermentativo, composición centesimal y estabilidad aerobia. Resultados. Se evaluaron el aumento de los niveles de maní forrajero en los ensilajes de hierba elefante promovió aumento en la porosidad, permeabilidad, densidad y pH (p<0,001). Se observó reducción de 0,58 en el índice de Flieg para cada 1% de maní forrajero adicionado al ensilaje de hierba -elefante (p<0,001). La suma de la diferencia de temperatura del ensilaje con relación al ambiente (p=0,032) y estabilidad aerobia (p<0,001) presentó efecto cuadrático. La inclusión de maní forrajero en los ensilajes de hierba elefante redujo la materia seca, materia orgánica, fibra en detergente neutro y ácido, hemicelulosa, celulose y carbohidratos totales (p<0,05) y aumentó la materia mineral, proteína bruta, lignina, carbohidratos no fibrosos, y nutrientes digestibles totales (p<0,05). Conclusiones. En las condiciones experimentales, se recomienda la inclusión de hasta el 40% de maní forrajero combinado con hierba elefante para componer ensilajes mezclados, debido a la mejor dinámica fermentativa, perfil nutricional y estabilidad aerobia.

Desempeño productivo de ovinos alimentados con ensilaje de pasto buffel en sustitución de ensilaje de maíz

This study aimed to evaluate the productive performance and nutritional status of crossbred sheep fed a diet containing buffel grass silage (BGS) in substitution of corn silage (CS). Thirty-two male Santa Inês sheep with an average body weight of 20.09 ± 2.0 kg were distributed in a completely randomized block design with four treatments (0, 33.3, 66.6, and 100 % of substitution of corn silage with buffel grass silage) and eight animals per treatment. Dry matter intake, apparent nutrient digestibility, water balance, nitrogen balance, and productive performance of animals were evaluated. The different levels of substitution of corn silage by buffel grass silage promoted a linear decrease in the consumption of ether extract (P=0.001) and non-fibrous carbohydrate (P<0.001), apparent digestibility of non-fibrous carbohydrate (P=0.019), water intake via food (P<0.001), total water intake (P=0.008), water excretion via urine (P=0.004), total water excretion (P=0.001), among which the highest values were observed in animals fed 100% corn silage. Water excretion via feces (P=0.017) and nitrogen balance (P=0.047) showed a quadratic function, increasing as substitution with buffel grass silage increased from 0 to 33.3 %. No significant differences (P>0.05) were observed in sheep productive performance,  with an average daily  weight  gain of 140.16 g/d.  The replacement  of 66.6 % of CS for BGS provides satisfactory results for dry matter and nutrients intake, and water intake, with weight gain of up to 155 g/d for Santa Inês crossbred sheep in Brazilian semi-arid.

Rendimiento de corderos alimentados con ensilaje como alimento total a base de nopal

This study aimed was to evaluate the intake, apparent digestibility, water balance, nitrogen balance, and productive performance in lamb fed cactus pear silage associated with tropical forages. Forty male intact crossbred lambs, with an initial body weight of 18.85 ± 1.2 kg, were used in the experiment. The experimental design was completely randomized, with 5 treatments and 8 replications. The treatments consisted of diets with different proportions of buffelgrass and wheat bran as sources of neutral detergent fiber (NDF), in total feed silage (TFS) based on cactus pear: TFS1 - 279 g/kg of buffelgrass; TFS2 - 240 g/kg of buffelgrass and 17 g/kg of wheat bran; TFS3 - 198 g/kg of buffelgrass and 34 g/kg of wheat bran; TFS4 - 108 g/kg of buffelgrass and 74 g/kg of wheat bran; TFS5 – 118 g/kg of wheat bran. The lowest NDF intake was found in lambs that consumed TFS5 (402 g/d). The non-fibrous carbohydrates apparent digestibility was higher for TFS5, while the NDF apparent digestibility of TFS5 and TFS4 was higher than TFS1. Diets promoted an average daily weight gain of 180.8 g/d. Under experimental conditions, the use of forage cactus pear and concentrate in the form of total mixed rations silage leads to greater intake of crude protein, non-fibrous carbohydrates, ether extract and greater digestibility of non-fibrous carbohydrates and neutral detergent fiber, however, all diets were viable in the feed of confined sheep, providing gains of up to 198 g/d according with the formulation of the diet.

Quality of free-range and commercial eggs subjected to different storage periods and temperatures

Abstract The objective was to evaluate the internal quality of eggs from commercial laying hens and free-range hens subjected to different storage periods and temperatures. For the experiment, 280 eggs were randomly distributed into different treatments, adopting a completely randomized design, in a 2 x 7 factorial arrangement of two temperatures, seven storage periods, totaling 14 treatments with 10 replications. The treatments consisted of two storage conditions: under refrigeration (6 ± 1.0ºC) and at room temperature (26.6 ± 1.0ºC). Eggs were analyzed for 30 days, with evaluations in different storage periods (0, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 days). For each storage condition, 140 eggs were separated, 70 commercial eggs and 70 free-range eggs. There was a linear increase in egg weight loss, yolk weight, albumen pH, yolk pH, length and width of albumen and yolk of commercial and free-range eggs, as the storage period increased. There was a linear reduction in weight, height and albumen index and in the yolk index of commercial and free-range eggs as the storage period increased, with more pronounced responses for eggs stored at room temperature (P<0.05). Albumen percentage was linearly reduced only for commercial eggs (P<0.05). Eggs kept at room temperature reduce their quality after 15 days of storage, and the storage under refrigeration for 30 days is recommended to preserve the shelf life of the egg for consumption.

Chemical composition, fractionation of carbohydrates and nitrogen compounds, ruminal degradation kinetics, and in vitro gas production of cactus pear genotypes

Abstract The aim of this study was to evaluate the chemical composition, fractionation of carbohydrates and nitrogen compounds, degradation parameters, and in vitro ruminal fermentation of cactus pear genotypes. The experiment was conducted in a completely randomized design with 4 cactus pear genotypes and 4 replicates. The evaluated cactus pear genotypes were: Miúda (Nopalea cochenillifera Salm Dyck), IPA Sertânia (Nopalea cochenillifera), Gigante (Opuntia ficus indica Mill), and Orelha de Elefante Mexicana (Opuntia stricta Haw), all in natura. Samples were randomly collected at different points in the experimental area. Whole plants were collected 24 months after field crop establishment. N. cochenillifera Salm Dyck presented the highest dry matter, acid detergent insoluble protein, non-fibrous carbohydrate, total digestible nutrients, digestible energy, total carbohydrates, and fractions A + B1 (P<0.05), while presenting lower neutral detergent fiber corrected for ash and protein, acid detergent fiber, and cellulose in relation to the other genotypes studied (P<0.05). The in vitro true digestibility of neutral detergent fiber was high for the genotypes N. cochenillifera Salm Dyck and N. cochenillifera Dyck, which also presented high in vitro total gas production (P<0.05). The cactus pear genotypes show adequate chemical characteristics to be composed part of diets offered to ruminants. However, supplementation is necessary to increase the dry matter and fiber contents. The Nopalea cochenillifera Salm Dyck genotype presented the highest proportions of total digestible nutrients, non-fibrous carbohydrates, non-protein nitrogen, unavailable nitrogen fraction total, and high gas production in relation to the other analyzed genotypes 24 months after field crop establishment.

Pearl millet cultivation with brackish water and organic fertilizer alters soil properties

Abstract Semi-arid regions are characterized by high evapotranspiration and low rainfall, favoring the accumulation of salts when irrigated with brackish water. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of pearl millet cultivation with brackish water levels and fertilized with organic fertilizer on the chemical and physical properties of the soil. A split plot randomized block design was adopted, in a factorial arrangement, with three repetitions. Plots consisted of four irrigation levels (25, 50, 75 and 100% crop evapotranspiration) and subplots consisted of four levels of organic fertilizer (0; 15; 30 and 45 Mg ha-1). At the end of the pearl millet production cycle, soil was collected from layers 0-0.20 m and 0.20-0.40 m, for physical (soil bulk density, particle density and porosity) and chemical (EC, pH, K, Na, Ca, Mg, H + Al, SB, CEC, V) properties. There was no effect of interaction of brackish water levels and organic fertilizer levels on soil chemical properties. Brackish water reduced potassium on layer 0.20-0.40 m. A negative linear effect was found for density in the 0.20-0.40 m layer under different levels of organic fertilizer. Brackish water levels and organic fertilizer levels in the cultivation of pearl millet does not alter soil chemical and physical properties at the 0-0.20 m layer. However, the use of brackish water reduces the concentration of potassium in the soil and the application of organic fertilizer reduces soil density at the 0.20-0.40 m layer.

Avaliação das preferências dos consumidores de pescado no município de Piancó-PB

RESUMO: Objetivou-se avaliar as preferências dos consumidores de pescado no município de Piancó, Paraíba. Realizou-se 108 entrevistas entre os meses de agosto a novembro 2019, em estabelecimentos urbanos e rurais, na qual o perfil do entrevistado foi avaliado por meio de questionário semiestruturado estilo “Survey” sobre o perfil, hábitos de consumos e fatores que afetam a decisão de consumo. Dos entrevistados 51% foram do sexo feminino e 49% do sexo masculino, com renda mensal menor que um salário mínimo (74%) e idade variando entre dezesseis e mais de sessenta anos e ensino médio completo. Apenas 2,78% dos entrevistados apresentaram preferência a carne de pescado, buscando adquirir o peixe inteiro, sendo ele congelado (35,93%) ou fresco (21,30%). O preço foi considerado o principal fator que influencia a compra do pescado (58,33%). A frequência do consumo apresentou maior representatividade para a categoria “raramente” com 45% do total dos entrevistados. Os principais locais de compra pelos entrevistados são feiras livres (31%) e mercados (29%), com uma maior busca pela tilápia (67%). Em relação aos principais motivos que leva ao consumidor optar pela compra do pescado, 41% afirmaram que é para variar o cardápio, 31% afirmam que a compra se dá porque o peixe é um alimento nutritivo e faz bem à saúde. A falta de informações da população do município de Piancó - PB sobre os benefícios que o pescado proporciona a saúde do consumidor, agregada a baixa renda, fazem com que o consumo destes produtos de origem animal seja limitado. Effect of sex on carcass yield and meat quality of guinea pig

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of sex on carcass yield and meat quality of guinea pig (Cavia porcellus). Twenty animals (10 males and 10 females) Criollos, with initial body weight of 286 ± 4.26 g and 2 months of age were distributed in a completely randomized design. The guinea pigs fed a diet based on vegetables and concentrate in a roughage:concentrate ratio of 80:20. After 60 days, animals were slaughtered and their carcasses and meat were evaluated. Males had higher slaughter weight, total weight gain, hot carcass weight, cold carcass weight, cold carcass yield, meat weight, meat yield, leg weight, loin + flank weight and front weight (P < 0.05). Females showed higher carcass chilling loss, liver yield, cooking loss and protein and ash content in meat (P < 0.05). The use of male guinea pigs for meat production provides higher yields of carcasses, meat and commercial cuts, and lower losses during carcass chilling and meat cooking.

Caracterização do consumidor de carne de frango e de ovos de aves de granja pela população do município de Olho d’Água/PB, Brasil

O conhecimento do perfil dos consumidores permite orientar o trabalho de produção e direcionar o processo de comercialização. Objetivou-se avaliar as características dos consumidores de carne de frango e ovos de aves de granja na cidade de Olho d’Água - Paraíba. Foram aplicados 93 questionários semi-estruturados, durante os meses de agosto a novembro de 2019. Dos entrevistados, 58% indivíduos eram do sexo feminino e 42% do sexo masculino, com idade variando entre dezoito e mais de sessenta anos e ensino fundamental incompleto (42,22%). O rendimento familiar apontado foi de menos de um salário mínimo (54%). A preferência pela carne bovina é predominante (44%). A maioria dos entrevistados (94%) afirmaram consumir carne de frango, apesar de 91% destes acreditarem que esta contém hormônios. O consumo da carne de frango ocorre quinzenalmente (34%). A preferência é pela compra dos cortes cárneos prontos (51%). Em relação ao consumo de produtos cárneos elaborados a partir da carne de frango, observa-se a predominância no consumo da linguiça (33,30%). Os consumidores no momento da compra levam em consideração o preço (40%) e a higiene do local (20%). A maioria dos entrevistados (57%) consomem ovos diariamente (48%), com preferência pelos ovos da casca branca (72%). O motivo principal citado pelos 43% dos entrevistados que alegaram não consumir ovo por causa do colesterol (55%). Avaliando os fatores que influenciam na hora da compra, 39% dos entrevistados, responderam que o preço exerce maior influência na compra, seguido pela cor da casca (25%) e o tamanho do ovo (20%).

Saline water intake effects performance, digestibility, nitrogen and water balance of feedlot lambs

Context Water availability is often a limiting factor for herds in the arid and semiarid regions worldwide. Aim The present study aimed to evaluate the productive performance and nutritional status of Santa Inês sheep receiving water containing different levels of salinity. Methods Thirty-two intact Santa Inês lambs, with an average bodyweight of 21.76 ± 1.25 kg, were distributed in a completely randomised design with four treatments (concentrations of total dissolved solids (TDS) in the drinking water: 640, 3200, 5760 and 8320 mg/L TDS), and eight animals per treatment. Intake, apparent nutrient digestibility, water balance, nitrogen balance, and performance of animals were evaluated. Key results Concentrations of TDS in water promoted an increasing linear effect for water intake offered via drinking trough (P = 0.01), total water intake (P = 0.02), total urine excretion (P = 0.02), total water excretion via urine (P = 0.01), water excretion via faeces (P = 0.04), total water excretion (P = 0.01), absorbed water (P = 0.02), total nitrogen intake (P = 0.04), and water intake to total weight gain ratio (P = 0.01). No effect of increasing TDS concentration was observed for intake of dry matter and nutritional fractions, nutrient digestibility, water intake via food, total faeces excretion, water balance, nitrogen excretion via faeces, nitrogen excretion via urine, total nitrogen excretion, absorbed nitrogen and nitrogen balance (P &gt; 0.05). No difference was observed in the performance of Santa Inês sheep consuming water with TDS concentration up to 8320 mg/L, which presented a daily mean weight gain of 0.105 kg/day. Conclusions Water with a concentration of TDS of up to 8320 mg/L can be used as drinking water for Santa Inês sheep. Implications Therefore, the water from wells, which is usually saline, may be an alternative to supplying small ruminants.

Chemical and Mineral Composition, Kinetics of Degradation and in vitro Gas Production of Native Cactus

This study aimed to evaluate the chemical and minerals composition, fractions of carbohydrate and nitrogen compounds, kinetics of degradation and in vitro gas production of native cactus species of the brazilian Semiarid. The experiment was conducted in a completely randomized design, with five native cactus species and 4 replications per species were randomly selected. The native cactus species evaluated were: Cereus jamacaru DC., Melocactus bahiensis Br. Et Rose Werderm, Opuntia inamoene K. Schum, Pilosocereus gounellei (A. Weber ex K. Schum) Bly ex Rowl and Pilosocereus pachycladus Ritter, all in natura. The native cactus species showed differences for chemical and mineral compositions (P <0.05). The nitrogenous components, C. jamacaru cactaceae presented higher contents of fractions A (228.1 g/kg CP) and B3 (241.7 g/kg CP) and smaller fraction C (174.0 g/kg CP). For carbohydrate fraction C. jamacaru presented lower fractions A + B1 (412.2 g/kg TC) and C (38.2 g/kg TC) and high fraction B2 (549.7 g/kg TC) and low fraction C. The cactus C. jamacaru and M. bahiensis presented a high PD (856.6 and 837.9 g/kg DM, respectively). The parameters a and b and the effective degradability present diferences (P<0.05) in function of 2% and 5% passage rate. The in vitro true digestibility of dry matter was above 700 g/kg of DM for all species. Cactus have high levels of potentially digestible fractions of total carbohydrates, indicating their importance as food for ruminants in created in the semiarid, where Caatinga vegetation is a basal resource.

Influence of diets with silage from forage plants adapted to the semi-arid conditions on lamb quality and sensory attributes

Quality and sensory attributes of meat from 32 mixed-breed Santa Inês lambs fed diets composed of four silages with old man saltbush (Atriplex nummularia Lind), buffelgrass (Cenchrus ciliaris), Gliricidia (Gliricidia sepium), and Pornunça (Manihot sp.) were evaluated. Meat from lambs fed diet containing old man saltbush silage (P<0.05) showed greater values for cooking loss. Of the sensory attributes evaluated in the Longissimus lumborum muscle of the lambs, color and juiciness did not differ (P>0.05). However, the silages led to differences (P<0.05) in aroma, tenderness, and flavor values. The meat from animals fed the pornunça and Gliricidia silages was tenderer. Flavor scores were higher in meat from lambs that consumed old man saltbush silage and lower in the meat from those fed buffelgrass silage. Diets formulated with buffelgrass silage for sheep reduce meat production. Based on the results for carcass weight and meat quality, old man saltbush and pornunça are better silages for finishing sheep.
