Abstract
OBJECTIVES Congenital toxoplasmosis remains a public health problem throughout the world. Long-term longitudinal studies are still needed to argument controversial screening and treatment strategies and to enable to accurately counsel parents. METHODS We conducted a prospective cohort study over 16 years in Marseilles, France. Seronegative pregnant women underwent monthly serological testing. Children were treated antenatally with rovamycine as soon as maternal infection was detected and with pyrimethamine and sulfadoxine in case of positive Toxoplasma PCR on amniotic fluid. Postnatal treatment with pyrimethamine and sulfadoxine was systematically prescribed for one year and possibly continued at the physician discretion. RESULTS 127 children were included. 24 children (18.9%) presented ocular lesions causing visual impairment in eight cases. Eleven children (8.7%) presented with ocular lesions at birth, mostly macular. Sixteen children (12.6%) developed ocular lesions during follow-up, mostly peripheral. The first ocular lesion could occur as late as 12 years after birth. No significant risk factor of chorioretinitis was identified including gestational age at infection, type of antenatal treatment and shorter postnatal treatment. CONCLUSIONS These results confirm the overall good prognosis of congenital toxoplasmosis in Europe but highlight though a low risk of late ocular manifestation. Chorioretinitis affected 18.9% of children suffering from congenital toxoplasmosis despite antenatal and neonatal screening associated with early treatment. Long-standing follow-up is needed because first lesion can occur as late as 12 years after birth. Late lesions were less often macular but nevertheless caused sometimes visual impairment.

Abstract
Antenatal diagnosis of congenital toxoplasmosis relies on PCR in amniotic fluid. Because parasitic load is often low, DNA extraction must be optimized. Manual methods remain widespread although automated methods appear more effective. This study aimed at optimizing an automated method and at comparing it with a widespread manual method: QIAamp DNA minikit. To optimize NucliSens easyMAG, we evaluated the addition of proteinase K pre-treatment and the increase of the amount of silica particles used for the extraction. The optimized method was then compared to QIAamp DNA minikit on samples containing less than 25 tachyzoites/ml. NucliSens easyMAG DNA yield was improved after proteinase K pre-treatment (p < 0.01), but not with a higher silica particle input. The optimized method yielded more positive PCRs than the manual method, especially for samples containing 5 tachyzoites/ml or less (71% vs 26%, p < 10(-4)). The DNA amount in samples found positive by PCR was higher after optimized automated extraction than after manual extraction (p < 10(-4)). Proteinase K pre-treatment should be added to extract DNA from amniotic fluid using NucliSens easyMAG. Using this optimized automated method rather than manual methods would improve the sensitivity of Toxoplasma PCR and simplify the daily workflow.

Abstract
1. Photoxidation in leaves is measured by exposing them to light in an atmosphere free from carbon dioxide but containing varied percentages of oxygen. 2. Photoxidation is observed in living leaves as well as in dead ones and in plant juices. Its rate is only slightly enhanced by feeding the leaves with sugar, but the respiration (autoxidation) becomes considerably enlarged during the exposure and the following dark period. 3. The rate of photoxidation rises slower than linearly with light intensity; its dependence upon oxygen pressure has the character of a saturation curve. Oxygen saturation occurs at about 6/10 of an atmosphere of oxygen. A similar dependence on oxygen pressure has been observed by Gaffron for photoxidation in vitro sensitized by chlorophyll adsorbed on proteins and by Warburg for the depression of the saturation rate of photosynthesis. 4. The influence of photoxidation on photosynthesis and the chemical kinetics of photoxidation are discussed.

Abstract
36 alcoholic patients, recruited from a treatment program, and 20 non-alcohol abusing control subjects were tested for their reactions to alcohol and non-alcohol cues. The cue exposure paradigm included audio-visual (video), tactile, olfactory, and guided imagery cue components related to alcohol and non-alcohol beverages. Response measures were analyzed for significant difference based on alcohol and non-alcohol cue and patient type. Among the subjective ratings, alcohol cue specific increases in alcohol craving, desire to drink, alcohol-like high, positive drinking expectancies and alcohol-like withdrawal were seen in alcoholic subjects. Among the physiological measures, alcohol cue specific increases in salivation were seen in alcoholic subjects. Changes in heart rate, skin conductance and temperature were not specific to alcohol cues, or to alcoholic patients. The smelling of alcohol had the greatest impact on alcohol craving and skin conductance in alcoholic subjects. These findings demonstrate robust subjective effects, and weak physiological effects, in response to a multidimensional alcohol cue exposure paradigm. The response profile indicates cue reactivity in alcoholics as an appetitive based form of alcohol craving.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In several studies, patients with alcohol dependence treated with the opioid antagonist naltrexone have shown fewer relapses to heavy drinking than those receiving placebo. An interaction between the naltrexone effect and the type of psychological therapy has been observed. METHODS A 6-month, double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel-group study was performed at 10 different investigation sites. After a placebo run-in period of 1 week, 118 patients were randomized into 4 treatment groups-50 mg of naltrexone daily or placebo in combination with either cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) or supportive therapy. The CBT was performed over nine sessions according to the manual of Project MATCH (Matching Alcoholism Treatments to Client Heterogeneity). The supportive therapy was defined as "the treatment as usual." Alcohol consumption, craving, carbohydrate-deficient transferrin, medication compliance by tablet count, and adverse clinical events were assessed at all visits. Other liver enzymes and psychiatric symptoms were also determined. RESULTS Ninety-one (77%) patients completed the study, and 92 (78%) were 80% compliant with the medication regimen. A lower percentage of heavy-drinking days was shown in the naltrexone group (p = 0.045) compared with the placebo group, as was a lower craving score (p = 0.029). These results are supported by the lower levels of liver enzyme activities (p < 0.010 for aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, and gamma-glutamyltransferase), but not by the carbohydrate-deficient transferrin levels, in the naltrexone group. The mean time period before the first day of heavy drinking was longer for the group treated with CBT (p = 0.010), especially in combination with naltrexone (p = 0.007). Naltrexone was well tolerated, and no patients discontinued the study due to side effects. CONCLUSIONS This study supports the effect of naltrexone in outpatient treatment of alcohol dependence and suggests that a beneficial interaction effect with CBT can be expected.

Abstract
Ethanol and cocaine are frequently co-abused, and the drug combination has been reported to produce an increased and prolonged subjective euphoria as compared to when either drug is administered alone. Acute administration of ethanol or cocaine increases the extracellular dopamine (DA) concentration in the nucleus accumbens (NAcc), a terminal region of the mesolimbic dopaminergic pathway. In the present study, the effects of separate and concurrent administration of cocaine and ethanol on DA concentrations in the NAcc were studied in rats pretreated with ethanol. Four groups of rats received either ethanol (2 g/kg, i.p.) or saline twice daily for 6 consecutive days. Thereafter, rats were given injections of saline or cocaine for another 2 days (i.e. treatment days 7 and 8) using a 'binge' administration pattern (three i.p. injections of 15 mg/kg each with 1-h interval starting 40 min after the first of the two daily doses of ethanol/saline). Stereotypic behavior was scored after each 'binge' of cocaine or saline on days 7 and 8. The DA and DA metabolite concentrations were measured using microdialysis on day 8. Ethanol enhanced the effect of cocaine on DA concentration in the NAcc as compared to a single administration of cocaine. The DA levels increased and reached their maximum values within 20-40 min after the cocaine administration, then gradually declined until the next injection 1-h later. Cocaine-induced stereotypic behavior was significantly increased in both saline and ethanol pretreated groups, though there was no significant difference between the two groups. The results of this study suggest that the enhanced DA transmission may be related to the experience produced by concurrent abuse of ethanol and cocaine in humans.

Abstract
In a study involving 14 laboratories supported by the European Community Biomed 2 program, we evaluated immunologic methods for the postnatal diagnosis of congenital toxoplasmosis (CT). Among babies born to mothers who seroconverted to positivity for toxoplasmosis during pregnancy, we analyzed 55 babies with CT on the basis of persistent anti-Toxoplasma immunoglobulin G (IgG) at 1 year of life and 50 control babies without anti-Toxoplasma IgG at 1 year of life in the absence of curative treatment with pyrimethamine-sulfonamides. We tested in-house methods such as the enzyme-linked immunofiltration assay (ELIFA) or Immunoblotting (IB) for the detection of IgG or IgM; these methods allowed comparison of the immunologic profiles of the mothers and the infants. We compared ELIFA and IB with a commercial enzyme immunoassay (EIA) or in-house immunosorbent agglutination assay (ISAGA) for the detection of IgM or IgA. The performances of combinations of methods were also assessed. A cumulative sensitivity of 98% during a 1-year follow-up was obtained with the ELIFA plus ISAGA combination. Only one case of CT was missed by the ELIFA plus ISAGA combination, whereas three cases were missed by the IB plus ISAGA combination, even though 48% of patients with CT were treated with pyrimethamine-sulfonamides, which are known to inhibit antibody neosynthesis. A similar performance was obtained with either ELIFA or IB in combination with EIA. The difference in performance between ELIFA plus ISAGA and IB plus ISAGA was not statistically significant (P = 0.31), and we conclude that both combinations of tests can be used for the diagnosis of CT in newborns.

Abstract
Non-selective opioid receptor antagonists are increasingly used in the treatment of alcohol dependence. The clinical effects are significant but the effect size is rather small and unpleasant side effects may limit the benefits of the compounds. Ligands acting at mu- and/or delta- receptors can alter the voluntary intake of ethanol in various animal models. Therefore, the attenuating effects of selective opioid receptor ligands on ethanol intake may be of clinical interest in the treatment of alcoholism. The objective of this study was to examine the effects of a selective kappa-receptor agonist, U50,488H on voluntary ethanol intake in the rat. We used a restricted access model with a free choice between an ethanol solution (10% v/v) and water. During the 3-days baseline period, the rats received a daily saline injection (1 ml/kg, i.p.) 15 min before the 2 h access to ethanol. The animals had free access to water at all times. The control group received a daily saline injection during the 4-days treatment-period, whereas the treatment groups received a daily dose of U50,488H (2.5, 5.0 or 10 mg/kg per day). Animals treated with U50,488H dose-dependently decreased their ethanol intake. The effect of the highest dose of U50,488H was reduced by pre-treatment with the selective kappa-antagonist nor-binaltorphimine (nor-BNI). These results demonstrate that activation of kappa-opioid receptors can attenuate voluntary ethanol intake in the rat, and the data suggest that the brain dynorphin/kappa-receptor systems may represent a novel target for pharmacotherapy in the treatment of alcohol dependence.

Abstract
In order to define more accurately human immunodeficiency virus-infected patients at risk of developing toxoplasmic encephalitis (TE), we assessed the prognostic significance of the anti-Toxoplasma gondii immunoglobulin G (IgG) immunoblot profile, in addition to AIDS stage, a CD4(+) cell count <50/mm(3), and an antibody titer > or =150 IU/ml, in patients with CD4 cell counts <200/mm(3) and seropositive for T. gondii. Baseline serum samples from 152 patients included in the placebo arm of the ANRS 005-ACTG 154 trial (pyrimethamine versus placebo) were used. The IgG immunoblot profile was determined using a Toxoplasma lysate and read using the Kodak Digital Science 1D image analysis software. Mean follow-up was 15.1 months, and the 1-year incidence of TE was 15.9%. The cumulative probability of TE varied according to the type and number of anti-T. gondii IgG bands and reached 65% at 12 months for patients with IgG bands of 25 and 22 kDa. In a Cox model adjusted for age, gender, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) clinical stage, and CD4 and CD8 cell counts, the incidence of TE was higher when the IgG 22-kDa band (hazard ratio [HR] = 5.4; P < 0.001), the IgG 25-kDa band (HR = 4.7; P < 0.001), or the IgG 69-kDa band (HR = 3.4; P < 0.001) was present and was higher for patients at CDC stage C (HR = 4.9; P < 0.001). T. gondii antibody titer and CD4 cell count were not predictive of TE. Thus, detection of IgG bands of 25, 22, and/or 69 kDa may be helpful for deciding when primary prophylaxis for TE should be started or discontinued, especially in the era of highly active antiretroviral therapy.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate sensitivity, specificity, and predictive values of a prenatal amniotic fluid (AF) polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test for diagnosis of congenital toxoplasmosis. METHODS A multicenter prospective study was done on 271 women with proved primary Toxoplasma infection during pregnancy and who had amniocentesis for prenatal diagnosis by PCR. Live-born infants were eligible for analysis only if a serologic follow-up could assess a definitive infection status. RESULTS Of the 270 evaluable cases, 75 were congenitally infected, 48 of whom had a positive PCR at prenatal diagnosis. Overall sensitivity of PCR on AF was estimated at 64% (95% confidence interval [CI] 53.1%, 74.9%), negative predictive value of 87.8% (95% CI 83.5%, 92.1%), whereas specificity and positive predictive value were 100% (95% CIs 98%, 100% and 92.3%, 100%, respectively). Among cases with congenital toxoplasmosis, there were no significant differences between those with positive or negative PCR with regard to median gestational age at maternal infection, interval between maternal infection and amniocentesis, or duration of treatment before amniocentesis. However, sensitivity of PCR was found to be significantly higher for maternal infections that occurred between 17 and 21 weeks' gestation (P <.02). CONCLUSION A negative PCR of AF cannot rule out congenital infection. In this case, continuation of treatment with spiramycin combined with ultrasonographic follow-up and postnatal follow-up are warranted. Our results also suggest presumptive treatment combining pyrimethamine and sulfonamides in case of maternal infection occurring late in pregnancy.

Abstract
To ascertain whether benzodiazepines (BZDs) cause behavioural side effects other than those already known or trigger latent mental illness processes, the medical records of 32 patients who had submitted claims for BZD-induced side effects to the Swedish Pharmaceutical Insurance (SPI) claims office during 1985-92 were re-assessed by two psychiatrists on the basis of the DSM-IV system to determine whether a psychiatric syndrome existed before, during, or after the prescription of BZDs. Of the 32 case reports entered into the study, 22 concerned women; mean age at the time of SPI claim submission was 47 years, and the mean duration of BZD treatment was 11.7 years. The BZD dosages were in most cases within recommended therapeutic limits. Twenty-five claimants had also been using other psychotropic drugs. In 28 of the 32 cases a psychiatric syndrome in accordance with DSM-IV was present before the start of BZD treatment-in most cases an anxiety syndrome or anxious personality trait. In the other four cases no diagnosis could be given owing to paucity of information. In the 12 cases of claimants who fulfilled BZD dependence criteria at some point during treatment, withdrawal syndromes might have affected the clinical picture to some extent. Four claimants received additional post-BZD-treatment Axis I diagnoses, but in all four cases the new diagnoses were clearly related to the pre-existing symptom pattern. Thus, apart from the dependence on the drug there was no evidence of psychiatric morbidity caused by the BZDs. The symptoms reported by the claimants as evidence of BZD-induced psychiatric morbidity seem in most cases to have been a feature of pre-existing psychopathology which became more manifest after discontinuation of BZD treatment.

Abstract
Recently, we have shown that rats repeatedly treated with ethanol and/or cocaine have decreased kappa-opioid receptor mRNA levels in the mesolimbic system. The aim of the present study was to investigate the short- and long-term effects of repeated ethanol administration on opioid peptide concentrations in brain tissue of male Sprague-Dawley rats. Dynorphin B (1-13) (Dyn B) and Met-enkephalinArg(6)Phe(7) (MEAP), endogenous ligands to kappa- and delta-opioid receptors, respectively, were measured using radioimmunoassays. The rats were given either ethanol [intraperitoneal (ip), twice daily, 2 g/kg bw/dose] or saline for 13 consecutive days. Thirty minutes after the last ethanol dose on Day 13, the Dyn B tissue concentration was significantly decreased in the cingulate cortex. The MEAP tissue concentration was decreased in the hippocampus 5 days after the last ethanol injection as compared to saline-treated controls. Furthermore, the Dyn B and the MEAP concentrations were increased in the periaqueductal grey area (PAG) at this time point. Of particular interest were the significant increases in Dyn B tissue concentrations found in the nucleus accumbens (NAcc) at 30 min and at 21 days after the last ethanol dose. The results suggest that repeated ethanol administration induces both short- and long-term changes in the tissue concentrations of opioids in certain brain regions associated with motivation and reward.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Endogenous corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF), its pituitary CRF1 receptor, and proopiomelanocortin (POMC) may be involved in the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) responses to alcohol. METHODS Alcohol (1.5 g/kg) or water was administered intragastrically to male Fischer rats after the "binge" pattern regimen, that is, three times daily at 1 hr intervals at the beginning of the light cycle. The levels of CRF, CRF1 receptor, and POMC mRNAs in the hypothalamic-pituitary axis were measured after acute (1 day) or chronic (14 days) binge pattern alcohol administration. Plasma levels of ACTH and corticosterone were measured to examine time-dependent alterations of HPA responses. RESULTS Plasma ACTH and corticosterone levels were elevated dramatically after 1 day of acute binge pattern alcohol administration. After 14 days of chronic alcohol, however, no elevation in plasma ACTH levels and an attenuated elevation in plasma corticosterone levels were found. CRF mRNA levels in the hypothalamus were not altered after either acute or chronic alcohol administration. CRF1 receptor mRNA levels in the anterior pituitary were decreased significantly after acute administration, with no change after chronic alcohol administration. POMC mRNA levels in the anterior pituitary were not altered by either acute or chronic alcohol administration. In the hypothalamus, POMC mRNA levels were decreased significantly after acute but not chronic binge alcohol administration. CONCLUSIONS These results suggest that (1) rats exposed to chronic binge alcohol develop tolerance in HPA activity, as shown by no elevation of ACTH and an attenuated corticosterone response to chronic alcohol after initial dramatic elevations by acute alcohol administration; (2) a concurrent acute decrease in CRF1 receptor mRNA levels in the anterior pituitary is associated with increased HPA activity, and (3) alterations of POMC gene expression in the hypothalamic region may have implications for a molecular understanding of the neuroendocrine response to alcohol.

Abstract
Female Fischer rats injected with cocaine in a "binge" pattern (15 mg/kg, IP, three times a day, at 1-h intervals) for 1 day had significantly higher levels of progesterone than saline-treated controls (p < 0.001). When analyzed by the stage of the estrous cycle, animals in proestrus showed significantly higher cocaine-induced progesterone plasma levels than those in other stages of the cycle (p < 0.01). Progesterone plasma levels were also increased after a single dose of cocaine (15 mg/kg). However, 3 h postinjection progesterone plasma levels had returned to normal. Thus, cocaine modulation of progesterone plasma levels appears to be an acute effect. In ovariectomized rats pretreated with estrogen, progesterone, or estrogen + progesterone, no significant differences were observed in progesterone plasma levels after acute "binge" pattern cocaine administration. Thus, acute cocaine induced increases in progesterone plasma levels in intact female rats are probably due to an increase in secretion rates of progesterone rather than an acceleration of its biotransformation. Due to the profound effects of progesterone in the modulation of CNS plasticity, the modulation of progesterone plasma level by cocaine may have implications for reproductive processes and neuronal functions of women. Moreover, cocaine may affect the progesterone levels in women utilizing progesterone-based contraception or steroid replacement treatment after menopause.

Abstract
Virulence of a Toxoplasma gondii isolate from an AIDS patient (designated as PTN) was compared with that of PLK, a variant of P-strain. Virulence was assessed in term of host survival upon inoculation in different strains of mice. All C57BL/6 mice died of acute toxoplasmosis by 7-10 days following intraperitoneal infection with 1 x 105 tachyzoites of PTN and 40% of BALB/c died on day 23 of infection, whereas 100% CBA/J infected with the same dose of PTN survived, as did outbred Swiss Webster mice. All C57BL/6, BALB/c, CBA/J, or Swiss Webster died of acute toxoplasmosis by 3-9 days postinfection upon inoculation with same dose of tachyzoites of the PLK strain. Further studies in CBA/J mice demonstrated that mice infected with PTN elicited a significantly higher lymphoproliferative response to crosslinked anti-CD3 mAb or Con A than PLK infected mice, and augmented production of TNFalpha, lower levels of nitrite and a higher number of NK cells. Genetical analysis indicated that both PLK and PTN strains of T. gondii are from type ll. Interestingly, being of the same genotype, the later showed less virulence upon inoculation in mice and had greater capacity to activate host immune system than the PLK strain.

Abstract
In this study, we examined whether the PTN strain (isolated from an AIDS patient) of Toxoplasma gondii could induce cross-protection in mice against infection with a lethal dose of the PLK strain. Mice were first infected with tachyzoites (5 x 10(5)) of PTN and 5 days later challenged with PLK (1 x 10(5), LD(90)) parasites. None of these mice succumbed to infection until day 21 after infection, whereas 100% of the mice given the same dose of PLK infection alone died between 5 and 11 days after infection. The protection was accompanied by an increased expansion of NK cells and CD4 + T cells. This condition was associated by increased production of IFN-gamma and an augmented number of IFN-gamma-producing cells in the spleen. Further, PTN + PLK-infected mice showed higher production of TNF-alpha and nitrite compared to PLK-infected mice. Mice infected with the PTN strain had an enhanced capacity to activate the immune system early in infection since they produced higher levels of IFN-gamma, TNF-alpha, and NO than PLK-infected mice. Administration of anti-IFN-gamma mAb or anti-asialo GM1 antibody resulted in 100 and 20% mortality, respectively, in PTN-infected mice but no death in PTN + PLK-infected mice. Together, these results suggest that early production of IFN-gamma and NK-cell activity is important in protection against PTN infection, whereas in PTN + PLK infection components of adaptive immunity rapidly developed following elaboration of an effective early innate immune response.

Abstract
The combination of ethanol and cocaine is commonly abused by human addicts which has serious clinical consequences. Here, the effects of separately and concurrently administered ethanol and 'binge' cocaine on kappa opioid receptor (KOR) mRNA in the ventral tegmental area (VTA) and nucleus accumbens (NAc) of rats were studied. KOR mRNA was down-regulated in both brain regions during concurrent as well as separate treatment with these drugs. In the VTA, the most pronounced decrease was obtained following combined treatment with ethanol and 'binge' cocaine. In the NAc, the strongest decrease was observed in the 'binge' cocaine group. This profound decrease of KOR mRNA in regions important for brain reward suggests a potential role of the KOR system in the abuse of cocaine and ethanol.

Abstract
Among 186 suspected cases of Toxoplasma encephalitis (TE) in HIV-infected patients, 113 were classified as TE and 73 as non-TE. Serum Toxoplasma gondii (T.g.) antibodies were detected by ELISA in 97% of TE vs 71% of non-TE cases (p < 0.001). In the 164 patients positive for T. g. antibodies, the IgG 27 and 32 bands were more frequently present in TE than in non-TE (p = 0.003, p = 0.002, respectively). Among patients with positive T.g. serology, multivariate analysis showed that the presence of an IgG 32 (OR 3.1) or IgG 27 band (OR 2.7) on Western blot was highly indicative of TE independently of each other. Positive T.g. serology, but not anti-T.g. IgG antibody titres, was predictive. Thus, the positivity of IgG 27 and 32 bands on Western blot analysis provides useful data for improving the diagnosis of presumptive TE in HIV-infected patients with suspected TE and positive Toxoplasma serology.

Abstract
This study was conducted to characterize female behavioral response to acute 'binge' pattern cocaine administration (15 mg kg(-1) i.p., three times a day, at 1 h intervals) during the different stages of the estrous cycle in Fischer rats. Cocaine administration significantly increased stereotypic behavior and locomotion in females. Animals in estrus showed significantly higher cocaine-induced stereotypic and locomotive behavioral responses than those in other stages of the cycle. Plasma levels of the cocaine metabolite benzoylecgonine during metestrus diestrus were significantly higher than during estrus and proestrus probably reflecting more rapid biotransformation of cocaine. Therefore, it is likely that the hormonal fluctuations associated with the estrous cycle modulate both cocaine metabolism and the behavioral responses to cocaine in female rats. This in turn may have important implications in gender differences in behavioral responses to cocaine.

Abstract
The acute effect of opioid antagonists on volitional ethanol intake was studied in unselected Sprague-Dawley rats using a two-bottle, free-choice model. The total daily intake of ethanol during saline treatment was 1.79 +/- 0.4 g/kg/day (n = 136). The rats were deprived of fluids for the last 4 hr of the light period. Saline or drug was given intraperitoneally 20 to 30 min before the onset of dark, and the ethanol and water intakes were measured during the following hour. The ethanol intake during this hour was 0.75 +/- 0.06 g/kg (n = 136). Naltrexone significantly reduced ethanol intake. There was also a significant reduction in ethanol intake following administration of ICI-174,864. Naloxonazine and naloxone methiodide lacked effect. None of the treatments had any effect on the water or food intake. The results suggest that central delta-opioid receptors modulate volitional ethanol intake in the rat.
