[Functional or aesthetic labia minora reduction: Complications, revision surgeries and results - a comparative study]. ACTA ACUST UNITED AC 2019; 47:330-336. Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate and compare the complications, the rate of revision surgeries and the long-term patient postoperative satisfaction level for the two main indications of labia minora reduction: aesthetic or functional. METHODS A comparative, retrospective and multicentered study was carried out in Belfort and Montbéliard hospitals between January 2010 and January 2017. Ninety-two primary labia minora reductions for labia minora hypertrophy have been listed. Each patient has been requested to fill in a questionnaire about the main indication of labiaplasty, any potential complication, a revision surgery and her level of the satisfaction. Patients who had agreed to respond were divided into two groups: a "functional indication" group (FI) and an "aesthetic indication" group (AI). RESULTS Thirty-seven patients (40%) answered the survey: 19 (51%) have been included in the FI group and the remaining 18 (49%) in the AI group. The mean postoperative follow-up duration was 3.2 years. We identified 13 patients (35%) who encountered a postoperative complication. It predominates in the FI group (53% versus 17%, P=0.04). Seven patients (19%) were treated by revision surgeries. All of them belonged to the IF group. Whatever the indication of the labiaplasty, 86% of the patients have been satisfied by the outcomes. CONCLUSION A labia minora reduction is a highly appreciated surgical treatment on the long term whatever the initial surgical indication. However, postoperative complications and revision surgeries are not negligible especially when the main indication is functional.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Military people are inapt for presence of urinary stones. In this specific population, the treatment of stones is even more aggressive than for the general population without recommendation. The final decision about aptitude is the responsibility of the military doctor. Whereas, ureteroscopy has its place there and must done by any urologist. METHODS The purpose of this study was to estimate the results of treatments by ureteroscopy in this population. Success was defined by the complete absence of fragment visualized in the imaging of control operating comment and so the end of the inaptitude time. RESULTS Between 2009 and 2016, forty-two were treated for ureteral or renal calculi. The population comprises of 93% men, 35 years old on average. The stones were mainly multiple (more 2) and the medium size is 5mm; sixteen (42.9%) was at the left and eight (19%) was bilateral. In 78.8% (78) of the cases there was a stone in renal position whose 50% (39) still at the lower calyx. In total, 5% of the patients were stone-free in 2 sessions on average. The average deadline of inaptitude of the initial consultation in the resumption of work was of 6 months. In 4% of the cases there was a complication operating rank 4. CONCLUSION This study confirms the feasibility, the weak harmlessness of ureteroscopy and the lesser deadline of inaptitude. Every urologist can treat this specific population. The patient must be informed and accept the treatment because of excluding referential. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE 4.

Abstract
Pushing capacity is a key parameter in athletic racing wheelchair performance. This study estimated the potential contribution of upper limb momentum to pushing. The question is relevant since it may affect the training strategy adopted by an athlete. A muscle-free Lagrangian dynamic model of the upper limb segments was developed and theoretical predictions of power transfer to the wheelchair were computed during the push phase. Results show that limb momentum capacity for pushing can be in the order of 40J per push cycle at 10m/s, but it varies with the specific pushing range chosen by the athlete. Although use of momentum could certainly help an athlete improve performance, quantifying the actual contribution of limb momentum to pushing is not trivial. A preliminary experimental investigation on an ergometer, along with a simplified model of the upper limb, suggests that momentum is not the sole contributor to power transfer to a wheelchair. Muscles substantially contribute to pushing, even at high speeds. Moreover, an optimal pushing range is challenging to find since it most likely differs if an athlete chooses a limb momentum pushing strategy versus a muscular exertion pushing strategy, or both at the same time. The study emphasizes the importance of controlling pushing range, although one should optimize it while also taking the dynamics of the recovery period into account.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To describe surveillance trends by age, sex and infection status of Hepatitis B (HB) virus in Canada between 2005 and 2012. METHODS Data on acute and chronic HB cases reported to the Canadian Notifiable Disease Surveillance System were compiled at the national level to examine trends by age and sex over time. Time trends are presented from 2005 to 2012, corresponding to the availability of data differentiated by acute and chronic infection status. RESULTS The rate of reported acute HB infections decreased from 1.0 to 0.6 per 100,000 between 2005 and 2012. Both sexes showed rate decreases over this time, although acute HB rates were consistently higher among males than females. The rate of reported chronic HB infections decreased from 14.1 to 12.0 per 100,000 between 2009 and 2012. These results are based on data in which infection status was specified. The proportion of unspecified cases in any given year may somewhat alter the results. CONCLUSION This is the first time that trends in reported cases and corresponding rates of HB in Canada have been examined by acute and chronic infection status using national surveillance data. Canada continues to have a downward trend in HB rates across Canada, most notably in acute HB cases. Increasing national capacity to differentiate between acute and chronic HB will facilitate a more thorough understanding of trends in transmission and of the burden of HB infection in Canada.

Abstract
This article documents the addition of 277 microsatellite marker loci to the Molecular Ecology Resources Database. Loci were developed for the following species: Ascochyta rabiei, Cambarellus chapalanus, Chionodraco hamatus, Coptis omeiensis, Cynoscion nebulosus, Daphnia magna, Gerbillus nigeriae, Isurus oxyrinchus, Lates calcarifer, Metacarcinus magister, Oplegnathus fasciatus, Pachycondyla verenae, Phaethon lepturus, Pimelodus grosskopfii, Rotylenchulus reniformis, Scomberomorus niphonius, Sepia esculenta, Terapon jarbua, Teratosphaeria cryptica and Thunnus obesus. Abstract
OBJECTIVE We report our experiences regarding the peri- and postoperative complications as well as pathological and functional results of robot-assisted radical prostatectomy during the implementation phase and the learning curve of the technique. MATERIAL All clinical, paraclinical, as well as peri- and postoperative events of the first 102 patients were filed. Postoperative complications were classified according to the Clavien classification. Regarding functional results, continence was defined as the use of 0 pads or one pad for security reasons. Erectile function was classified into absence of spontaneous erections, erections insufficient for sexual intercourse and erections sufficient for sexual intercourse. RESULTS Median procedure time was 240min, blood-loss 400mL and transfusion rate 2%. Overall, 7.8% of all patients had perioperative complications, 13.7% had minor and 4.9% had mayor post operative complications. The overall positive surgical margin rate was 16.0%. At 12month, 87% of all patients were continent and 21.1% had spontaneous erections and 47.4% had sexual intercourse. CONCLUSION Patients treated during the implementation phase of robot-assisted radical prostatectomy show rates of peri- and postoperative complications, as well as pathological and functional results comparable to the results of centers of excellence published in the literature.

Abstract
In this study, new DNA markers were explored for the flounder Platichthys flesus. cDNA and genomic sequences of the genes encoding the glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate-deshydrogenase (GAPDH), the cytosolic creatine kinase (CK), the prostaglandin D synthase (PGDS) and the betaine homocysteine methyltransferase (BHMT) were characterized. The tumour suppressor p53 gene structure was already described. A PCR-SSCP (Single Strand Conformation Polymorphism) analysis was finally conducted to study the genetic polymorphism of different populations of flounders collected along the French Atlantic coast. Four highly contaminated French estuaries (Seine, Vilaine, Loire and Gironde) were sampled and compared to a reference estuary (Ster) to explore possible selective effect of the environment on specific allelic frequencies. Our results showed that two loci p53 and PGDS, could be potential markers of chemical stress: p53A allele frequency increased in contaminated systems compared to the reference system. In the Vilaine estuary, PGDS polymorphism could be related to pesticide stress.

Abstract
The mitochondrial DNA of most metazoan animals is highly conserved in size, averaging about 17 kilobase paris (kbp). The mitochondrial DNA from the deep-sea scallop Placopecten magellanicus, in contrast, has been found to be approximately 34 kbp long. It is also highly variable in size from individual to individual and is unusual in the extent of its size variation. Mitochondrial DNAs from individuals collected at the same site differ by as much as 7 kbp. The size variation is due largely to differences in the number of copies of a tandemly repeated 1.2-kbp element.

Abstract
In past studies of enteric bacteria such as Escherichia coli, various measures of cellular RNA content have been shown to be strongly correlated with growth rate. We examined this correlation for four marine bacterial isolates. Isolates were grown in chemostats at four or five dilution rates, yielding growth rates that spanned the range typically determined for marine bacterial communities in nature (mu = 0.01 to 0.25 h). All measures of RNA content (RNA cell, RNA:biovolume ratio, RNA:DNA ratio, RNA:DNA:biovolume ratio) were significantly different among isolates. Normalizing RNA content to cell volume substantially reduced, but did not eliminate, these differences. On average, the correlation between mu and the RNA:DNA ratio accounted for 94% of variance when isolates were considered individually. For data pooled across isolates (analogous to an average measurement for a community), the ratio of RNA:DNA mum (cell volume) accounted for nearly half of variance in mu (r = 0.47). The maximum RNA:DNA ratio for each isolate was extrapolated from regressions. The regression of (RNA:DNA)/(RNA:DNA)(max) on mu was highly significant (r = 0.76 for data pooled across four isolates) and virtually identical for three of the four isolates, perhaps reflecting an underlying common relationship between RNA content and growth rate. The dissimilar isolate was the only one derived from sediment. Cellular RNA content is likely to be a useful predictor of growth rate for slowly growing marine bacteria but in practice may be most successful when applied at the level of individual species.

Abstract
Necrosis of the penis glans is commonly described after circumcision or strangulation. We report the case of a patient, opioid abuser, who presented an isolated glans necrosis after an injection of buprenorphin. The buprenorphin (Subutex) is a sublingual partial mu-opioid agonist used for the treatment of heroin dependance. Its intravenous or subcutaneous abuse is associated with local infection. The patient require a surgical intervention. After the failure of a mucosal graft, a soft skin graft was done.

Abstract
An increase in individual growth rate of chub Leuciscus cephalus along a longitudinal river gradient of the Rhône River basin was observed and supported by significant differences between mean growth rates of successive river size groups. The potential implications of the results for studies on species traits variability along large-scale environmental gradients are discussed.

Abstract
Perinatal estrogens increase the number of vasopressin-expressing cells and the density of vasopressin-immunoreactive fibers observed in adult male rodents. The mechanism of action of estrogens on sexual differentiation of the extra-hypothalamic vasopressin system is unknown. We hypothesized that the sexually dimorphic expression of progestin receptors (PRs) during development would masculinize vasopressin expression in mice. We compared the number of vasopressin-expressing cells in the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (BNST) and medial amygdala and the density of vasopressin-immunoreactive fibers in several brain regions of male and female wild type and PRKO mice using in situ hybridization and immunohistochemistry. As expected, sex differences in vasopressin cell number were observed in the BNST and medial amygdaloid nucleus. Vasopressin-immunoreactive fiber density was sexually dimorphic in the lateral septum, lateral habenular nucleus, medial amygdaloid nucleus, and mediodorsal thalamus. Sex differences were also observed in the principal nucleus of the BNST and medial preoptic area but not in the dorsomedial hypothalamus, which are thought to receive vasopressin innervation from the suprachiasmatic nucleus. Deletion of PRs did not alter the sex difference in vasopressin mRNA expression and vasopressin fiber immunoreactivity in any area examined. However, deletion of PRs increased the density of vasopressin fiber immunoreactivity in the lateral habenular nucleus. Our data suggest that PRs modulate vasopressin levels, but not sexual differentiation of vasopressin innervation in mice.

Abstract
Effects of pesticide exposure on the European flounder, Platichthys flesus, were investigated using a suppression subtractive hybridization method (SSH) to identify up- and down-regulated genes after a 30-day exposure to herbicides (a cocktail of atrazine, diuron, and isoproturon, and a single herbicide, glyphosate). A total of 256 expressed gene sequences were identified as having the potential for being differentially expressed, of which 116 could be identified by homology with databased sequences. The metabolic functions with which they are associated include energy production, general metabolism, signaling, transport, immune system, and structure. Expression of 14 of these genes was analyzed in liver, muscle, and gills by reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) under experimental conditions (0, 15, and 30 days of exposure) and under field conditions (sampling in two estuaries displaying different levels of pesticide contamination). This study provides a first basis for studying the response of fish to pesticide exposure and allows the characterization of new potential genetic markers of pesticide contamination in the field.

Abstract
In order to investigate the relative importance of historical processes and life-history traits in shaping the present-day genetic structure of European anglerfishes, 382 Lophius piscatorius and 134 Lophius budegassa were sequenced on the 5' end of the mitochondrial control region. Both species showed a limited genetic structure and some evidence of a demographic expansion that probably occurred not at the end of the Last Glacial Maximum, but earlier in the Pleistocene. The main discrepancy between the two anglerfishes concerned the genetic structure between Atlantic and Mediterranean populations, with weak but significant differentiation observed only in L. budegassa. This genetic structure was congruent with the existence of a phylogeographical break previously reported in several marine species across the Almeria-Oran front. The contrast observed between both anglerfishes was supposed to be induced by a possible more ancient (re)colonisation of the Mediterranean Sea by L. budegassa. Finally, the limited genetic structure and lack of isolation by distance observed in both species suggested high larval dispersal capacities that probably overwhelm the influence of the bathymetric distribution range on migrations of adults and juveniles.

Abstract
Zingel asper is an endemic percid of the Rhône basin considered to be critically endangered. This species was continuously distributed throughout the Rhône in 1900, but today only occupies 17% of its initial area. In the present study, five microsatellite loci were used to assess the level of genetic variability within and among populations localized in different sub-basins. Contrasting results were obtained for the three main populations from the Rhône. A reduced allelic diversity was observed for the two populations displaying the lowest patch sizes (length of the river system occupied); of these, a recent genetic bottleneck was detected for the population showing a particularly low density. However, the third population was characterized by a relatively large spatial extent, high local fish concentrations and an allelic diversity that was twice as high and associated with an equilibrium between mutation and drift. Thus, this population shows an apparently better evolutionary potential for long-term survival. Since 1930, a marked fragmentation of the whole Rhône system has appeared, related to the development of dams, and we assume that the significant genetic differentiation detected between the populations could mainly reflect the impact of this fragmentation. The high turnover of the Z. asper populations, and the major role of dispersal in population persistence (highlighted in a recent population dynamics study), indeed suggest that the differentiation observed could mainly have arisen from habitat fragmentation in recent history.

Abstract
The Chondrostoma genus is widespread in Europe, with numerous endemic species in northern Mediterranean rivers. We reconstructed the phylogenetic relationships of this genus, using the whole cytochrome b sequence and compared the two freshwater fish dispersion hypotheses: (1) dispersion around the Mediterranean Sea during the Lago Mare phase of the Messinian salinity crisis (Bianco's hypothesis) and (2) an older and more gradual colonization of the Mediterranean rivers (Banarescu's hypothesis). All phylogenetic analyses identified two levels of divergences, implying two radiation events in the Chondrostoma genus. The first radiation mainly concerned Mediterranean species, whereas the second one includes Danubian and Mesopotamian species. This phylogeographic pattern was already observed for the genus Squalius, which exhibits a similar geographic range distribution in Europe and probably is shared with several other Mediterranean genera, such as Scardinius, Rutilus, and TELESTES: Furthermore, assuming a molecular clock of 1% per million years, the first radiation appears consistent with a Messinian dispersion during the Lago Mare, 5.3 million years ago, whereas the second one may correspond to a Mesopotamian dispersion through the Black Sea to the Danube system. According to our results, the Lago Mare theory is strengthened, and a more recent and pre-Pleistocene colonization of the Danube from Mesopotamian freshwater fishes is suggested.

Abstract
Numerous methods can be used in intraspecific phylogeographic studies to infer the evolutionary mechanisms that shaped observed genetic variation in populations. However, these methods are scarcely used jointly, and the evolutionary outcomes they could propose are not fully compared. In this study, using a chub (Leuciscus cephalus; Cyprinidae) mitochondrial DNA data set (13 populations in Western Greece, 14 haplotypes), we compare three distinct 'historical' methods that could possibly infer relative importance of basic evolutionary mechanisms (isolation vs migration) shaping genetic variation: the nested clade analysis, the psi-test and the 'mismatch distributions'. Taking together, interpretations of these analyses allow to draw a picture of the evolutionary history of chub in Western Greece based on isolation and genetic drift for higher clades. However, results issued each method can differ for low differentiated clades. We discuss such differences and suggest that methods should be used jointly in phylogeographic studies for a better evaluation of the evolutionary mechanisms that shaped genetic variation.

Abstract
Indicators of effects at the population level (genetic variation using allozymes) and early indicators of pollution (EROD activity and DNA strand break formation) were analysed in chub (Leuciscus cephalus) living in weakly and heavily contaminated stations of the Rhône River watershed. The genetic erosion was mainly detected in a fish population living in a contaminated small river system, through modifications in allelic and genotypic frequencies for PGM-2 locus and could be linked to a genetic bottleneck and to the reduced gene flow from upstream unable to maintain or restore the genetic diversity. In a contaminated large river system, the genetic diversity for PGM-2 and other loci was maintained and was probably the consequence of a high gene flow from upstream, linked to a sustained drift of larvae and juveniles in the system. A convergent increase of the frequency of the 90 allele at PGM-2 was observed in two contaminated stations compared with the reference station, this trend being confirmed on a more extensive geographic scale over the Rhône River basin. A high level of EROD activity was detected in both contaminated sites but only the fish in the large river system showed a significant DNA damage level compared to the reference population. The low DNA damage level and high hepato-somatic ratio characterized the impacted population of the small river system and could be associated to a chronic high-level exposure of fish to pollutants which selected individuals exhibiting a high level of DNA damage repair. In the two contaminated systems, some genotypes at the PGM-2 and EST-2 loci showed a low level of DNA damage and/or a high EROD activity and may be considered as being tolerant to pollutants. A higher tolerance of the most heterozygous fish was also detected in the contaminated large system and confirmed that a high level of heterozygosity may be necessary for survival in such a system.

Abstract
The plant mitochondrial rps3 intron was analyzed for substitution and indel rate variation among 15 monocot and dicot angiosperms from 10 genera, including perennial and annual taxa. Overall, the intron sequence was very conserved among angiosperms. Based on length polymorphism, 10 different alleles were identified among the 10 genera. These allelic differences were mainly attributable to large indels. An insertion of 133 nucleotides, observed in the Alnus intron was partially or completely absent in the other lineages of the family Betulaceae. This insertion was located within domain IV of the secondary-structure model of this group IIA intron. A mobile element of 47 nucleotides that showed homology to sequences located in rice rps3 intron and in intergenic plant mitochondrial genomes was found within this insertion. Both substitution and indel rates were low among the Betulaceae sequences, but substitution rates were increasingly larger than indel rates in comparisons involving more distantly related taxa. From a secondary-structure model, regions involved in helical structures were shown to be well preserved from indels as compared to substitutions, but compensatory changes were not observed among the angiosperm sequences analyzed. Using approximate divergence times based on the fossil record, substitution and indel rate heterogeneity was observed between different pairs of annual and perennial taxa. In particular, the annual petunia and primrose evolved more than 15 and 10 times faster, for substitution and indel rates respectively, than the perennial birch and alder. This is the first demonstration of an evolutionary rate difference between perennial and annual forms in noncoding DNA, lending support to neutral causes such as the generation time, population size, and speciation rate effects to explain such rate heterogeneity. Surprisingly, the sequence from the rps3 intron had a high identity with the sequence of intron 1 from the angiosperm mitochondrial nad5 gene, suggesting a common origin of these two group IIA introns.

Abstract
Gillnet sampling was conducted for a year in a tropical mangrove creek (SW Madagascar), characterized by a limited freshwater influence, a high turbidity and a tidal range up to 3 m. Sixty species of juvenile fishes were caught, 44 species being of commercial interest. Catches were dominated by Gerreidae (27% of total abundance), Teraponidae (16%), Carangidae (13%) and Sparidae (12%). The temporary resident fishes in the mangrove zone represented 50% of the species and 97% of the total abundance, the other species being rare (less than five individuals). The species richness, abundance and biomass per netting were low in the middle of the cool season (July-August). Monthly changes in the fish assemblage were particularly complex, with three species groups displaying a clear seasonal pattern, some species succeeding one another in a rather unstructured way, and three species abundant throughout the year. There was no clear structuring effect of temperature, salinity and turbidity on the fish assemblage. However, tidal, lunar and diel effects on the composition of the fish assemblage were evident. The species overlap between the Sarodrano mangrove fauna and the adjacent coral reef fauna is particularly weak with six species in common and shows that the mangrove plays only a very limited nursery role for coral reef species.

Abstract
Numbers of substitutions per site for 15 protein-coding genes and six introns of the plant mitochondria were estimated to compare modes and tempos of evolution between exons and introns, and numbers of insertions-deletions per site also were investigated in introns. Intra-gene homogeneity of numbers of substitutions per site was assessed further among different taxa and between mitochondrial and nuclear paralogs translocated from the mitochondrial genome. Gene-to-gene differences in numbers of substitutions per site were found to be higher for nonsynonymous than synonymous sites, and this could be due to differential selection if mutation rate is assumed constant for the genome. Some mitochondrial genes have evolved as fast as chloroplast genes, thus faster than previously thought. For coxI, relative rate tests showed that woody taxa evolved slower than annuals at synonymous sites. Generation time, population size, and speciation rate are likely factors involved in this rate heterogeneity. Introns were less constrained than their adjacent exons for both overall numbers of substitutions per site and indels, but, on average, overall numbers of substitutions per site for introns were similar to numbers of synonymous substitutions per site for exons. Correlations were generally high between numbers of substitutions and numbers of indels per site for the same intron. Mitochondrial genes transferred to the nucleus had an accelerated rate of substitution per site, which was most significant at synonymous sites. These differences between paralogs in two different genomes are likely the result of different mutation rates.

Abstract
The improvement of identification accuracy of concurrent vowels with differences in fundamental frequency (delta F0) is usually attributed to mechanisms that exploit harmonic structure. To decide whether identification is aided primarily by selecting the target vowel on the basis of its harmonic structure ("harmonic enhancement") or removing the interfering vowel on the basis of its harmonic structure ("harmonic cancellation"), pairs of synthetic vowels, each of which was either harmonic or inharmonic, were presented to listeners for identification. Responses for each vowel were scored according to the vowel's harmonicity and that of the vowel that accompanied it. For a given target, identification was better by about 3% for a harmonic ground unless the target was also harmonic with the same F0. This supports the cancellation hypothesis. Identification was worse for harmonic than for inharmonic targets by 3%-8%. This does not support the enhancement hypothesis. When both vowels were harmonic, identification was better by about 6% when the F0's differed by 1/2 semitone, consistent with previous experiments. Results are interpreted in terms of harmonic enhancement and harmonic cancellation, and alternative explanations such as waveform interaction are considered.

Abstract
Twenty healthy male volunteers received single oral doses of famciclovir (125-750 mg), in a randomized, single-blind, crossover study. Plasma and urine concentrations of penciclovir and its 6-deoxy precursor, BRL 42359, were determined and penciclovir plasma concentration-time data submitted to model-independent pharmacokinetic analysis. Peak plasma concentrations of penciclovir were obtained at median times of 0.5-0.75 h after dosing. The areas under the concentration versus time curves (AUC) and the peak penciclovir concentration (Cmax) increased linearly with dose of famciclovir. Time to Cmax, elimination half-life, urinary recovery and renal clearance of penciclovir did not change with increasing dose. Famciclovir was excreted via the kidneys as penciclovir (60%) and BRL 42359 (5%), respectively. Famciclovir was well tolerated by all subjects with a low incidence of adverse effects. In conclusion, penciclovir thus displays linear pharmacokinetics in the anticipated therapeutic dose range of famciclovir.

Abstract
Famciclovir has been shown to have potent and selective activity against herpesviruses. The possibility of a pharmacokinetic interaction between the anti-viral agent, famciclovir and allopurinol has been investigated in twelve healthy male volunteers following a single oral dose of famciclovir (500 mg) in the presence and absence of steady-state levels of allopurinol (300 mg). Similarly, the pharmacokinetic profiles of allopurinol and oxypurinol prior to and following a single dose of famciclovir were compared. Mean values of Cmax, AUC and terminal-phase half-life for penciclovir following administration of famciclovir alone at 3.3 micrograms.ml-1, 8.8 micrograms.h.ml-1 and 2.1 h, respectively were unchanged by co-administration of allopurinol. Similarly, mean urinary recovery and renal clearance values of penciclovir following famciclovir alone were 56.8% and 27 l.h-1, and when given with allopurinol 59.7% and 27.5 l.h-1, respectively. No evidence of accumulation of the inactive precursor to penciclovir, BRL 42359, was noted as a result of co-administration of the two drugs. Mean steady-state Cmax, AUC and terminal-phase half-life values for allopurinol after co-administration of allopurinol with famciclovir also appeared unchanged from values obtained after dosing of allopurinol alone, at 2.12 micrograms.ml-1, 5.73 micrograms.h.ml-1 and 1.38 h, respectively. Mean Cmax and AUC values of the active metabolite of allopurinol, oxypurinol were 11.2 micrograms.ml-1 and 96.0 micrograms.h.ml-1, respectively, and these were also unaltered by co-administration of famciclovir with allopurinol, with values of 10.6 micrograms/ml and 89.8 micrograms.h/ml, respectively.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Abstract
The plasma pharmacokinetics of pantoprazole have been investigated following single intravenous infusion and single oral administration at a dose of 40 mg to 12 healthy male subjects in a randomised cross-over study. Both treatments were generally well tolerated and no relevant compound-related adverse events were noted. The plasma pharmacokinetics of pantoprazole following intravenous infusion in this group of subjects were characterised by a total plasma clearance of 0.13 l.h-1 x kg-1 and apparent terminal elimination half-life 1.9 h. The apparent volume of distribution estimated at steady state (0.17 l.kg-1) was compatible with the localization of a major fraction of the compound in extracellular water. Following oral administration as an enteric-coated tablet formulation, a variable onset of absorption was followed by rapid attainment of maximum plasma concentrations of pantoprazole. Pantoprazole was well absorbed following oral administration; the absolute systemic bioavailability of the compound was estimated as 77% (95% CI, 67 to 89%).

Abstract
During a transition from high growth irradiance (700 micromoles quanta per square meter per second) to low growth irradiance (70 micromoles quanta per square meter per second), the unicellular marine chlorophyte Dunaliella tertiolecta Butcher increases the cellular pool size of the light-harvesting complex of photosystem II (LHC II). We showed that the increase in LHC II apoproteins and in chlorophyll content per cell is preceded by an approximately fourfold increase in cab mRNA. The increase in cab mRNA is detectable within 1.5 hours following a shift from high to low light intensity. An increase in the relative abundance of cab mRNA was also found following a shift from high light to darkness and from high light to low light in the presence of gabaculine, a chlorophyll synthesis inhibitor. However, the LHC II apoproteins did not accumulate in the latter experiments, suggesting that LHC II apoprotein synthesis is coupled to chlorophyll synthesis at or beyond translation. We propose that changes in energy balance brought about by a change in light intensity may control a regulatory factor acting to repress cab mRNA expression in high light.

Abstract
The effects of 100 mg and 200 mg bedtime doses of cimetidine on nocturnal gastric acid secretion were examined in nine healthy subjects in a double blind, placebo controlled, randomised three way crossover study. Treatment was given at 23.00 hours and the gastric contents continually aspirated from midnight until 07.00 hours the following morning. Hourly aliquots were analysed for pH and acid output. Relative to placebo the 100 mg and 200 mg doses of cimetidine respectively increased mean pH by 2.22 and 2.63 units/h (P less than 0.001) with mean acid output decreasing by 0.95 and 0.98 mmol/h (P less than 0.001). Whilst mean pH was higher and mean acid output was lower for 200 mg cimetidine compared to 100 mg cimetidine the difference was not statistically significant. Mean hourly pH was consistently above pH 3 for 100% of the time for both doses of cimetidine whereas mean pH failed to reach this value at anytime on placebo. Low doses of cimetidine taken at bedtime effectively reduced nocturnal gastric acid secretion in healthy individuals.
