Abstract
BACKGROUND As in other chronic diseases, providing medical information plays a key role in the therapy of atopic eczema. It is already known that information leaflets often do not meet the criteria of evidence-based patient information (EBPI). OBJECTIVE Therefore, the aim of this study was to examine the quality of information leaflets on atopic eczema. MATERIAL AND METHODS A total of 35 leaflets were included in the study. They were collected from self-aid groups, from the internet, from general practitioners, from pediatricians and dermatologists as well as from pharmacies in Regensburg. The quality of information provided was assessed using the DISCERN instrument. RESULTS Almost all of the 35 patient information leaflets assessed had shortcomings, scoring only mid- or low-point in the analysis. None of the leaflets was of excellent quality. Only three leaflets were estimated to contain good quality information. CONCLUSION Most of the leaflets did not meet the criteria of evidence-based patient information. In conclusion, there may be a lack of quality information about atopic eczema. Improving the existing material and comparing the EBPI standards with the information needs of atopic eczema patients should be topics of future research.

Abstract
People with hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection other than genotype 1 represent a heterogeneous group. The aim of the phase 2 C-SCAPE study was to evaluate elbasvir/grazoprevir (EBR/GZR), with or without ribavirin (RBV), in participants with HCV genotype 2, 4, 5 or 6 infection. This was a part randomised, open-label, parallel-group study (NCT01932762; PN047-03) of treatment-naive, noncirrhotic participants. Participants with HCV genotype 2 infection received GZR 100 mg + RBV ± EBR 50 mg for 12 weeks and those with genotype 4, 5 or 6 infection were randomized to receive EBR/GZR ± RBV for 12 weeks. The primary endpoint was sustained virological response 12 weeks after completion of treatment (SVR12; HCV RNA <25 IU/mL). Among participants with genotype 2 infection, SVR12 was achieved by 80% (24/30) of those receiving EBR/GZR + RBV and 73% (19/26) of those receiving GZR + RBV. SVR rates were high in participants with HCV genotype 4 infection receiving EBR/GZR with and without RBV (100% [10/10] and 90% [9/10]; respectively). In contrast, the addition of RBV to EBR/GZR appeared to increase SVR12 in participants with genotype 5 infection (EBR/GZR, 25%; EBR/GZR + RBV 100% [4/4]). In participants with genotype 6 infection, SVR12 was 75% (3/4) in both those receiving EBR/GZR and those receiving EBR/GZR + RBV. The safety profile was similar across treatment arms, with adverse events tending to occur more frequently among participants receiving RBV. In conclusion, these data support the inclusion of participants with genotype 4 or 6 infection in the EBR/GZR phase 3 studies. EBR/GZR ± RBV was unsatisfactory for participants with genotype 2 or 5 infection.

Abstract
Elbasvir (EBR; HCV NS5A inhibitor) and grazoprevir (GZR; HCV NS3/4A protease inhibitor) are approved as a fixed-dose combination to treat patients chronically infected with HCV genotypes 1 and 4. During the development programme and supported by in vitro potency, the efficacy of EBR+GZR was assessed in HCV GT3-infected patients. This study's aim was to determine the efficacy and tolerability of 12 or 18 weeks of EBR+GZR with ribavirin (RBV) in treatment-naïve, noncirrhotic HCV GT3-infected patients. Randomized patients received open-label EBR (50 mg once daily) + GZR (100 mg once daily) + RBV. The primary efficacy objective was to evaluate the sustained virologic response rates 12 weeks after the end of all study therapy (SVR12). SVR12 rates (95% confidence interval) were 45.0% (23.1, 68.5) and 57.1% (34.0, 78.2) after treatment with EBR+GZR+RBV for 12 weeks or 18 weeks, respectively. On-treatment virologic failure was observed in 41% (17 of 41) of patients. At virologic failure, resistance-associated substitutions (RASs) with a >five-fold shift in potency occurred in the NS3 region in six (35%) patients and in the NS5A region in 16 (94%) patients. The most common RAS at virologic failure was Y93H in NS5A which was identified in 13 of 17 (76%) patients. The efficacy of EBR+GZR+RBV was suboptimal in HCV GT3-infected patients due to a high rate of on-treatment virologic failure and treatment-emergent RASs which demonstrates an inadequate barrier to the development of GT3 resistance. However, rapid viral clearance demonstrated the antiviral activity of EBR+GZR+RBV in GT3-infected patients.clinicaltrials.gov: NCT01717326.

Abstract
Grazoprevir (GZR) is a second-generation hepatitis C virus NS3/4A protease inhibitor. The aim of this study was to evaluate GZR plus ribavirin (RBV) in patients with HCV GT1 infection. Noncirrhotic, IL28B CC patients with HCV genotype 1 infection were randomized to GZR 100 mg once daily and RBV for 12 or 24 weeks. Patients in the 12-week arm with detectable HCV RNA at treatment week 4 (TW4) had treatment extended to 24 weeks (response-guided therapy, RGT). The primary endpoint was sustained virologic response (SVR12) at follow-up week 12 (HCV RNA <25 IU/mL) in the per-protocol (PP) population (excluding patients with important protocol deviations). Twenty-six patients were randomized and 22 were included in the PP population. SVR12 was 58.3% (7 of 12) and 90% (9 of 10) in the RGT and 24-week arms, respectively. Seven PP patients had virologic failure, including one patient in the 24-week arm who relapsed after follow-up week 12. All three breakthrough patients had wild-type (WT) virus at baseline and developed breakthrough at TW6 or TW12 with Y56H, A156T and D168A/N mutations. Of the five relapse patients, four had WT at baseline (at relapse three had WT and one had V55A and D168A), and one had S122A/T at baseline and S122T at relapse. There were no serious adverse events (AEs), discontinuations due to AEs or grade 3/4 elevations in total and/or direct bilirubin. Grazoprevir plus RBV was associated with a rapid and sustained suppression of HCV RNA. These results support further evaluation of grazoprevir-based regimens (NCT01716156; protocol P039).

Abstract
UNLABELLED Grazoprevir (MK-5172, Merck & Co., Inc.) is a selective inhibitor of the hepatitis C virus (HCV) NS3/4a protease. The aim of this study was to evaluate the safety and efficacy of grazoprevir at doses of 25-100 mg/day in combination with peginterferon and ribavirin (PEG-IFN/RBV). In this randomized, dose-ranging, multicentre trial, treatment-naive adults with chronic HCV genotype 1 infection received once-daily grazoprevir 25 mg, 50 mg or 100 mg plus PEG-IFN/RBV for 12 weeks. Patients with quantifiable HCV RNA (≥25 IU/mL) at week 4 received an additional 12 weeks of PEG-IFN/RBV. The primary endpoint was sustained virologic response (HCV RNA <25 IU/mL 12 weeks after completing therapy [SVR12]). Eighty-seven patients were randomly assigned and received ≥1 dose of therapy. Median time to undetectable HCV RNA was 16 days in the 100-mg arm and 22 days in the 25- and 50-mg arms. All patients except one had HCV RNA undetectable or unquantifiable at week 4 and received 12 weeks of therapy. SVR12 was achieved by 13 of 24 (54.2%), 21 of 25 (84.0%) and 23 of 26 (88.5%) patients in the 25-, 50- and 100-mg arms, respectively (per-protocol analysis). Three patients discontinued as a result of nonserious adverse events (AEs) and three patients experienced serious AEs. Transaminase elevations occurred in two patients (one each in the 25- and 100-mg arms). CONCLUSION These data support further study of the grazoprevir 100-mg dose. Phase 3 studies of grazoprevir 100 mg in combination with elbasvir are currently ongoing (NCT01710501; protocol P038).

Abstract
Graveyards have been a matter of controversial debate for many years in terms of the risk they pose to the environment. However, literature data are inconclusive and there are no systematic studies available from modern graveyards with special reference to soil found in the vicinity of the coffin. To our knowledge, the present study is the first to systematically investigate a comprehensive exhumation series (involving 40 graves) in order to determine burial-related changes in matter and element content. Human burials lead to the accumulation of certain elements, with higher than normal levels of N, C, Zn, Ba, Ca and Na being observed in soils below coffins. Decomposition material inside coffins has much higher levels of heavy metals and alkaline elements than the surrounding soil. However, the major problem observed was the large quantity of synthetic bedding material which is more likely to lead to the formation of adipocere under the moist conditions given. Adipocere formation, which is the result of the anaerobic bacterial hydrolysis of fat, is known to interrupt the natural decomposition process and delay the post-mortem release of elements. We assume that once the inhumed matter has completely decomposed, much higher than normal levels of pollutants will be released into and have an ecological effect on the soil and water environment.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This article describes multiple transmissions of rabies via transplanted solid organ from a single infected donor. The empirical Milwaukee treatment regimen was used in the recipients. METHODS Symptomatic patients were treated by deep sedation (ketamine, midazolam, and phenobarbital), ribavirin, interferon, and active and passive vaccination. Viral loads and antibodies were continuously monitored. RESULTS Recipients of both cornea and liver transplants developed no symptoms. The recipient of the liver transplant had been vaccinated approximately 20 years before transplantation. Two recipients of kidney and lung transplants developed rabies and died within days of symptomatic disease. Another kidney recipient was treated 7 weeks before he died. The cerebrospinal fluid viral load remained at constant low levels (<10,000 copies/mL) for approximately 5 weeks; it increased suddenly by almost 5 orders of magnitude thereafter. After death, no virus was found in peripheral compartments (nerve tissue, heart, liver, or the small intestine) in this patient, in contrast to in patients in the same cohort who died early. CONCLUSIONS Our report includes, to our knowledge, the longest documented treatment course of symptomatic rabies and the first time that the virus concentration was measured over time and in different body compartments. The postmortem virus concentration in the periphery was low, but there was no evidence of a reduction of virus in the brain.

Abstract
Desmoplakin (DP) anchors the intermediate filament cytoskeleton to the desmosomal cadherins and thereby confers structural stability to tissues. In this study, we present a patient with extensive mucocutaneous blisters, epidermolytic palmoplantar keratoderma, nail dystrophy, enamel dysplasia, and sparse woolly hair. The patient died at the age of 14 years from undiagnosed cardiomyopathy. The skin showed hyperplasia and acantholysis in the mid- and lower epidermal layers, whereas the heart showed extensive fibrosis and fibrofatty replacement in both ventricles. Immunofluorescence microscopy showed a reduction in the C-terminal domain of DP in the skin and oral mucosa. Sequencing of the DP gene showed undescribed mutations in the maternal and paternal alleles. Both mutations affected exon 24 encoding the C-terminal domain. The paternal mutation, c.6310delA, leads to a premature stop codon. The maternal mutation, c.7964 C to A, results in a substitution of an aspartic acid for a conserved alanine residue at amino acid 2655 (A2655D). Structural modeling indicated that this mutation changes the electrostatic potential of the mutated region of DP, possibly altering functions that depend on intermolecular interactions. To conclude, we describe a combination of DP mutation phenotypes affecting the skin, heart, hair, and teeth. This patient case emphasizes the importance of heart examination of patients with desmosomal genodermatoses.

Abstract
Malignant gliomas remain largely incurable despite intensive efforts to develop novel therapies. Replicating oncolytic viruses have shown great promise, among them attenuated measles viruses of the Edmonston B strain (MV-Edm). However, host immune response and the infiltrative nature of gliomas limit their efficacy. We show that human blood outgrowth endothelial cells (BOECs), readily expandable from peripheral blood, are easily infected by MV-Edm and allow replication of MV-Edm while surviving long enough after infection to serve as vehicles for MV-Edm (BOEC/MV-Edm). After intravenous and peritumoral injection, BOEC/MV-Edm deliver the viruses selectively to irradiated orthotopic U87 gliomas in mice. At the tumor, MV-Edm produced by the BOECs infect glioma cells. Subsequent spread from tumor cell to tumor cell leads to focal infection and cytopathic effects that decrease tumor size and, in the case of peritumoral injection, prolong survival of mice. Since MV-Edm within BOECs are not readily neutralized and because BOEC/MV-Edm search and destroy glioma cells, BOEC/MV-Edm constitute a promising novel approach for glioma therapy.

Abstract
There is growing evidence that tumours display a hierarchy similar to normal tissues. Accordingly, a small population of tumour stem cells is supposed to perpetuate tumour growth. These cells renew themselves and are highly tumourigenic upon injection into immunocompromised animals, yielding tumours largely identical to those from which they were derived. Tumour stem cells exhibit a high degree of chemoresistance due to slow cycling and constitutive expression of multiple members of the ATP-BINDING CASSETTE (ABC) family of transporters. An increasing number of tumours with tumour stem cells has been identified by now, including breast, brain, colon and prostate cancers, as well as leukemias. Detailed characterization of tumour stem cells may contribute to a better understanding of the underlying biology of the respective tumours and lead to novel curative therapies.

Abstract
The death ligand Apo2L/TRAIL (Apo2 ligand/tumor necrosis factor-related apoptosis-inducing ligand) eradicates many tumor types while sparing most normal tissues. However, some tumors are resistant to TRAIL. We therefore determined if TRAIL cooperates with cytosine deaminase/5-fluorocytosine (CD/5-FC) gene therapy and investigated the mechanisms involved. Transfection of human LAN-5 neuroblastoma cells with CD rendered the cells (LAN-5-CD) sensitive to 5-FC-induced, caspase-dependent apoptosis. Mediated by caspase-3, CD/5-FC and TRAIL cooperated to induce apoptosis in these TRAIL-resistant cells and to cleave X-linked inhibitor of apoptosis protein (XIAP). In established LAN-5-CD tumors growing subcutaneously in mice, intratumorally applied TRAIL did not decrease tumor growth and systemically administered 5-FC only attenuated tumor growth. In contrast, 5-FC together with TRAIL dramatically decreased tumor growth and eradicated a tumor. Assuming sufficient gene transfer of CD in situ, CD/5-FC with TRAIL may be useful for the therapy of tumors resistant to TRAIL.

Abstract
The success of cancer gene therapies requiring in vivo gene transfer is severely hampered by the low efficacy of gene transfer, which has been difficult to improve. We therefore established a novel strategy to increase the share of transduced cells post gene transfer. We hypothesized that in vivo selection of tumor cells transduced with a suicide gene effectively enriches these cells within a tumor, thus allowing for an increased bystander effect after the prodrug is given, leading to enhanced eradication of tumor cells. We reasoned that in vivo enrichment should be achieved by exploiting the metabolism of the suicide gene product. For this 'enrichment-eradication' strategy we chose a fusion gene of cytosine deaminase and uracil phosphoribosyl transferase. Positive selection (enrichment) was to be achieved by concurrently giving N-(phosphonacetyl)-L-aspartate, an inhibitor of pyrimidine de novo synthesis, which leads to pyrimidine depletion-mediated death of non-transduced cells, and cytosine, to rescue fusion gene expressing cells via the pyrimidine salvage pathway. Negative selection (eradication) was to be induced by giving the prodrug 5-fluorocytosine. Indeed, murine NXS2 neuroblastoma cells transduced with the fusion gene were effectively enriched in vitro, leading to a near-complete bystander effect. In vivo enrichment-eradication of NXS2 cells led to decreased tumor growth. This proof-of-principle study shows that enrichment-eradication may compensate the effects of low in vivo gene transfer efficacy, a major obstacle in cancer gene therapy.

Abstract
The Collaborative Initial Glaucoma Treatment Study (CIGTS) was initiated to evaluate whether local medical therapy or trabeculectomy is the better initial treatment for patients with newly diagnosed open-angle glaucoma. Visual field progression, intraocular pressure, and visual acuity were to be monitored for a period of 5 years. A total of 607 patients were randomly distributed among the two groups and controlled at 6-month intervals. At the same time the investigators tried to record quality of life using a questionnaire. Both trabeculectomy and medical therapy were able to lower intraocular pressure significantly, whereas trabeculectomy was more effective. The results of the questionnaire showed only minor differences between the two groups. The medically treated patients reported slightly more ocular symptoms than the patients in the trabeculectomy group.

Abstract
The four isoforms of desmosomal cadherin desmogleins (Dsg1-4) are expressed in epithelial tissues in a differentiation-specific manner. Extensive sequencing of the human genome has revealed only one copy of the Dsg1 gene. However, we recently cloned two novel additional mouse Dsg1 genes, Dsg1-beta and -gamma, which flank the original Dsg1-alpha on chromosome 18. Sequence conservation between the Dsg1 isoforms diverged significantly at exon 11, particularly in the region that encodes for the extracellular anchoring (EA) domains. Computational analysis revealed very low hydrophilic potential of the Dsg1-gamma EA compared with the corresponding sequences of Dsg1-alpha and -beta, suggesting that the Dsg1-gamma EA domain may have a stronger affinity to the cell membrane. We generated antibodies using synthetic peptides or recombinant proteins localized within the EA domains. These antibodies were tested for their specificity and were then used to demonstrate expression of Dsg1 isoforms in various tissues. In the epidermis, all Dsg1 isoforms were differentially expressed in the differentiating cell layers. In the hair follicle, all Dsg1 isoforms were present throughout the entire process of its development and cycling but the expression of Dsg1 isoforms is subject to significant hair cycle-dependent changes. Dsg1-beta and -gamma, but not Dsg1-alpha, were detected in the sebaceous gland epithelium and the stratified epithelium of the stomach. Finally, Dsg1-alpha and Dsg1-beta, but not Dsg1-gamma, are proteolytically cleaved by exfoliative toxin A. These results suggest that the developmental complexity of mouse tissues, including skin and hair, may play a significant role in the evolutionary driving force to maintain multiple Dsg1 genes in mouse.

Abstract
The importance of features that allow the determination of an individual's gender even with skulls that have been largely destroyed is undisputed in archaeological and anthropological practice. Due to its extreme mechanical strength, the pars petrosa ossis temporalis is usually preserved in skulls and the sex dimorphisms of this skeletal part are therefore of particular significance. In the present study, we aimed at clarifying the controversial question whether the course of the meatus acusticus internus (M.a.i.) beneath the superior surface also reveals sex-specific differences. Using 410 forensically modern petrous portions, the course of the canal was examined and the respective angles determined using a specifically developed casting and cutting technique. The median values certainly reveal sex differences: the lateral angle on the male petrous portions is 10 degrees smaller than that of females; the medial angles on female petrous portions are approximately 5 degrees smaller than those of male skulls. Using discriminant analysis, approximately 66% of the specimens can be determined accurately.

Abstract
PURPOSE Comparison of multidetector-row CT (MDR-CT) of the chest with and without ECG triggering for the detection of pulmonary metastases. MATERIALS AND METHODS Fifty patients with malignant tumors underwent CT of the chest. The unenhanced phase was performed with ECG-triggered MDR-CT and the contrast-enhanced phase with helical MDR-CT. The ECG-triggered and standard helical scans were interpreted in separate sessions, with the analysis determining the number and demarcation of the intrapulmonary nodules and the delineation of the mediastinal structure (rated 1 = excellent to 5 = poor). RESULTS ECG-MDR-CT images detected 38 % more pulmonary nodules than MDR-CT. The detection rate for tumors < 5 mm was 64 % higher in ECG-triggered scans. The median demarcation rating of all pulmonary findings was 2 for ECG-MDR-CT and 3 for MDR-CT. The median demarcation rating of tumors < 5 mm was 3 for ECG-MDR-CT and 4 for MDR-CT. Mediastinal structures were better delineated by ECG-triggering. The median demarcation rating of the vessels and left bronchus was 2 for ECG-MDR-CT and 4 for MDR-CT. Detection rate and demarcation rating of pulmonary tumors and the delineation of mediastinal structures were not significant different for either CT technique. CONCLUSION Our study indicates superiority for ECG-MDR-CT.

Abstract
We have measured the p(T) distribution of top quarks that are pair produced in pp collisions at sqrt[s] = 1.8 TeV using a sample of tt decays in which we observe a single high- p(T) charged lepton, a neutrino, and four or more jets. We use a likelihood technique that corrects for the experimental bias introduced due to event reconstruction and detector resolution effects. The observed distribution is consistent with the standard model prediction. We use these data to place limits on the production of high- p(T) top quarks suggested in some models of anomalous top quark pair production.

Abstract
Normal locomotion of the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans requires transmission of contractile force through a series of mechanical linkages from the myofibrillar lattice of the body wall muscles, across an intervening extracellular matrix and epithelium (the hypodermis) to the cuticle. Mutations in mua-3 cause a separation of the hypodermis from the cuticle, suggesting this gene is required for maintaining hypodermal-cuticle attachment as the animal grows in size postembryonically. mua-3 encodes a predicted 3,767 amino acid protein with a large extracellular domain, a single transmembrane helix, and a smaller cytoplasmic domain. The extracellular domain contains four distinct protein modules: 5 low density lipoprotein type A, 52 epidermal growth factor, 1 von Willebrand factor A, and 2 sea urchin-enterokinase-agrin modules. MUA-3 localizes to the hypodermal hemidesmosomes and to other sites of mechanically robust transepithelial attachments, including the rectum, vulva, mechanosensory neurons, and excretory duct/pore. In addition, it is shown that MUA-3 colocalizes with cytoplasmic intermediate filaments (IFs) at these sites. Thus, MUA-3 appears to be a protein that links the IF cytoskeleton of nematode epithelia to the cuticle at sites of mechanical stress.

Abstract
We present the results of a search for neutral Higgs bosons produced in association with b quarks in pp-->bb(phi)-->bbb final states with 91+/-7 pb(-1) of pp collisions at sqrt[s] = 1.8 TeV recorded by the Collider Detector at Fermilab. We find no evidence of such a signal and the data are interpreted in the context of the neutral Higgs sector of the minimal supersymmetric extension of the standard model. With basic parameter choices for the supersymmetric scale and the stop-quark mixing, we derive 95% C.L. lower mass limits for neutral Higgs bosons for tan(beta) values in excess of 35.

Abstract
We have measured the ratio of prompt production rates of the charmonium states chi(c1) and chi(c2) in 110 pb(-1) of pp collisions at sqrt[s] = 1.8 TeV. The photon from their decay into J/psi(gamma) is reconstructed through conversion into e+e- pairs. The energy resolution this technique provides makes the resolution of the two states possible. We find the ratio of production cross sections sigma(chi(c2))/sigma(chi(c1)) = 0.96+/-0.27(stat)+/-0.11(syst) for events with pT(J/psi) > 4.0 GeV/c, /eta(J/psi)/ < 0.6, and pT(gamma) > 1.0 GeV/c.

Abstract
The importance of the petrous portion for metric sex determination is a controversial subject in the archaeological and anthropological literature. To achieve a forensically suitable method for sex differentiation, 10 measuring distances were determined on recent forensic material in the form of 410 petrous portions, which had proved to be reliable in the preliminary examinations. The most important findings can be summarized as follows: the petrous portion revealed significant metric sex differences, in particular the width:height index (P < 0.001); the sex differences are age-dependent; differences in the measuring distances on the petrous portion can be observed with regard to their lateral location on either side of the skull; the discrimination analysis allows a correct classification of two-thirds of all petrous portions studied. To some extent, these findings contrast with those already published, but the discrepancies can be attributed primarily to the different composition of the samples used in the respective studies.

Abstract
We present the first measurement of the ratio of branching fractions R identical withB(t-->Wb)/B(t-->Wq) from p_p collisions at sqrt[s] = 1.8 TeV. The data set corresponds to 109 pb(-1) of data recorded by the Collider Detector at Fermilab during the 1992-95 Tevatron run. We measure R = 0.94(+0.31)(-0.24)(stat+syst) or R>0.61 (0.56) at 90% (95)% C.L., in agreement with the standard model predictions. This measurement yields a limit on the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa quark mixing matrix element /V(tb)/ under the assumption of three generations and unitarity.

Abstract
A survey was conducted to assess psychiatrists' knowledge and attitudes regarding the costs of various psychiatric treatments. Psychiatrists (n = 500) were randomly selected from the membership of the Ohio Psychiatric Association. The survey explored several aspects of psychiatrists' knowledge of costs, including estimated prices of 24 specific psychiatric treatments (frequently used psychotropic medications, laboratory tests, and inpatient and outpatient procedures) as well as their level of confidence in their estimates. The survey also asked a series of attitude/opinion questions and specific demographic data. The psychiatrists (n = 265, 59% response) perceived that knowing the costs of treatments was an important consideration when choosing a particular treatment. Psychiatrists' actual knowledge of the costs of treatment was inconsistent with their beliefs of the importance of knowing the costs as well as their reported confidence in their knowledge of costs. Information about the costs of psychiatric treatments is an important clinical consideration and a program to improve clinicians' knowledge of the costs of psychiatric treatment could occur during residency training.

Abstract
PROBLEM To date, approaches to restore accommodation following cataract surgery have been based on the principle of a liquid or solid implant that moves within the capsular bag and thereby changes the optical characteristics of the eye. However, these implants have been associated with shrinking and fibrosis of the capsular bag, a problem that will not be solved in the foreseeable future. APPROACH If accommodation is effected by shifting the whole capsule including its contents on the optical axis, capsular fibrosis will virtually no longer play a role. In order to execute this shift via the neuronal feedback mechanisms of the ciliary muscle in a controlled way, radial zonular forces or movements must be transformed into axial ones, which is possible by means of tiny permanent magnets. This paper describes the basic aspects of such an implant. The dependence of accommodation on all relevant parameters is quantified in a computer simulation. CONCLUSION The implant described appears to be practicable with justifiable technical and surgical efforts.

Abstract
An angular analysis of B0-->J/psiK(*0) and B(0)(s)-->J/psistraight phi has been used to determine the decay amplitudes with parity-even longitudinal ( A0) and transverse ( A( parallel)) polarization and parity-odd transverse ( A( perpendicular)) polarization. The measurements are based on 190 B0 and 40 B(0)(s) candidates obtained from 89 pb(-1) of &pmacr;p collisions at the Fermilab Tevatron. The longitudinal decay amplitude dominates with |A0|(2) = 0.59+/-0. 06+/-0.01 for B0 and |A0|(2) = 0.61+/-0.14+/-0.02 for B(0)(s) decays. The parity-odd amplitude is found to be small with |A( perpendicular)|(2) = 0.13(+0.12)(-0.09)+/-0.06 for B0 and |A( perpendicular)|(2) = 0.23+/-0.19+/-0.04 for B(0)(s) decays.

Abstract
We report the first observation of dijet events with a double Pomeron exchange topology produced in &pmacr;p collisions at sqrt[s] = 1800 GeV. The events are characterized by a leading antiproton, two jets in the central pseudorapidity region, and a large rapidity gap on the outgoing proton side. We present results on jet kinematics and production rates, compare them with corresponding results from single diffractive and inclusive dijet production, and test factorization.

Abstract
This Letter describes a direct measurement of the W boson total decay width, gamma(W), using the Collider Detector at Fermilab. The measurement uses an integrated luminosity of 90 pb(-1), collected during the 1994-1995 run of the Fermilab Tevatron p&pmacr; collider. The width is determined by normalizing predicted signal and background distributions to 49 844 W-->enu candidates and 21 806 W-->&mgr;nu candidates in the transverse-mass region M(T)<200 GeV and then fitting the predicted shape to the 438 electron events and 196 muon events in the high- M(T) region, 100<M(T)<200 GeV. The result is gamma(W) = 2.04+/-0.11(stat)+/-0.09(syst) GeV.

Abstract
We have measured the polarization of J/psi and psi(2S) mesons produced in pp collisions at sqrt[s] = 1.8 TeV, using data collected at the Collider Detector at Fermilab during 1992-1995. The polarization of promptly produced J/psi [psi(2S)] mesons is isolated from those produced in B-hadron decay, and measured over the kinematic range 4 [5.5]<P(T)<20 GeV/c and |y|<0.6. For P(T) greater than or approximately equal 12 GeV/c we do not observe significant polarization in the prompt component.

Abstract
We report the results of a search for second and third generation leptoquarks using 88 pb(-1) of data recorded by the Collider Detector at Fermilab. Color triplet technipions, which play the role of scalar leptoquarks, are investigated due to their potential production in decays of strongly coupled color octet technirhos. Events with a signature of two heavy flavor jets and missing energy may indicate the decay of a second (third) generation leptoquark to a charm (bottom) quark and a neutrino. As the data are found to be consistent with standard model expectations, mass limits are determined.

Abstract
We use 106 pb (-1) of data collected with the Collider Detector at Fermilab to search for narrow-width, vector particles decaying to a top and an antitop quark. Model independent upper limits on the cross section for narrow, vector resonances decaying to t&tmacr; are presented. At the 95% confidence level, we exclude the existence of a leptophobic Z' boson in a model of top-color-assisted technicolor with mass M(Z')<480 GeV/c(2) for natural width gamma = 0.012M(Z'), and M(Z')<780 GeV/c(2) for gamma = 0.04M(Z').

Abstract
Events collected by the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF) with an energetic jet plus large missing transverse energy can be used to search for physics beyond the standard model. We see no deviations from the expected backgrounds and set upper limits on the production of new processes. We consider in addition the production of light gravitinos and set a limit at 95% confidence level on the breaking scale sqrt[F]>/=217 GeV, which excludes gravitino masses smaller than 1.1x10(-5) eV/c(2).

Abstract
We have searched for direct pair production of scalar top and scalar bottom quarks in 88 pb-1 of pp collisions at sqrt[s]=1.8 TeV with the CDF detector. We looked for events with a pair of heavy flavor jets and missing energy, consistent with scalar top (bottom) quark decays to a charm (bottom) quark and a neutralino. The numbers of events that pass our selections show no significant deviation from standard model expectations. We compare our results to the next-to-leading order scalar quark production cross sections to exclude regions in scalar quark-neutralino mass parameter space.

Abstract
We report the results of a search for a W' boson produced in pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 1.8 TeV using a 107 pb-1 data sample recorded by the Collider Detector at Fermilab. We consider the decay channel W'-->&munumu and search for anomalous production of high transverse mass munumu lepton pairs. We observe no excess of events above background and set limits on the rate of W' boson production and decay relative to standard model W boson production and decay using a fit of the transverse mass distribution observed. If we assume standard model strength couplings of the W' boson to quark and lepton pairs, we exclude a W' boson with invariant mass less than 660 GeV/c2 at 95% confidence level.
