First Measurement of η Meson Production in Neutrino Interactions on Argon with MicroBooNE

We present a measurement of η production from neutrino interactions on argon with the MicroBooNE detector. The modeling of resonant neutrino interactions on argon is a critical aspect of the neutrino oscillation physics program being carried out by the DUNE and Short Baseline Neutrino programs. η production in neutrino interactions provides a powerful new probe of resonant interactions, complementary to pion channels, and is particularly suited to the study of higher-order resonances beyond the Δ(1232). We measure a flux-integrated cross section for neutrino-induced η production on argon of 3.22±0.84(stat)±0.86(syst) 10^{-41}  cm^{2}/nucleon. By demonstrating the successful reconstruction of the two photons resulting from η production, this analysis enables a novel calibration technique for electromagnetic showers in GeV accelerator neutrino experiments.

Marital Status, Living Arrangement, and Survival among Individuals with Advanced Prostate Cancer in the International Registry for Men with Advanced Prostate Cancer

BACKGROUND

Studies have shown improved survival among individuals with cancer with higher levels of social support. Few studies have investigated social support and overall survival (OS) in individuals with advanced prostate cancer in an international cohort. We investigated the associations of marital status and living arrangements with OS among individuals with advanced prostate cancer in the International Registry for Men with Advanced Prostate Cancer (IRONMAN).

METHODS

IRONMAN is enrolling participants diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer (metastatic hormone-sensitive prostate cancer, mHSPC; castration-resistant prostate cancer, CRPC) from 16 countries. Participants in this analysis were recruited between July 2017 and January 2023. Adjusting for demographics and tumor characteristics, the associations were estimated using Cox regression and stratified by disease state (mHSPC, CRPC), age (<70, ≥70 years), and continent of enrollment (North America, Europe, Other).

RESULTS

We included 2,119 participants with advanced prostate cancer, of whom 427 died during up to 5 years of follow-up (median 6 months). Two-thirds had mHSPC. Most were married/in a civil partnership (79%) and 6% were widowed. Very few married participants were living alone (1%), while most unmarried participants were living alone (70%). Married participants had better OS than unmarried participants [adjusted HR: 1.44; 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.02-2.02]. Widowed participants had the worst survival compared with married individuals (adjusted HR: 1.89; 95% CI: 1.22-2.94).

CONCLUSIONS

Among those with advanced prostate cancer, unmarried and widowed participants had worse OS compared with married participants.

IMPACT

This research highlighted the importance of social support in OS within this vulnerable population.

Search for Heavy Neutral Leptons in Electron-Positron and Neutral-Pion Final States with the MicroBooNE Detector

We present the first search for heavy neutral leptons (HNLs) decaying into νe^{+}e^{-} or νπ^{0} final states in a liquid-argon time projection chamber using data collected with the MicroBooNE detector. The data were recorded synchronously with the NuMI neutrino beam from Fermilab's main injector corresponding to a total exposure of 7.01×10^{20} protons on target. We set upper limits at the 90% confidence level on the mixing parameter |U_{μ4}|^{2} in the mass ranges 10≤m_{HNL}≤150  MeV for the νe^{+}e^{-} channel and 150≤m_{HNL}≤245  MeV for the νπ^{0} channel, assuming |U_{e4}|^{2}=|U_{τ4}|^{2}=0. Pain and Its Association with Survival for Black and White Individuals with Advanced Prostate Cancer in the United States

Bone pain is a well-known quality-of-life detriment for individuals with prostate cancer and is associated with survival. This study expands previous work into racial differences in multiple patient-reported dimensions of pain and the association between baseline and longitudinal pain and mortality. This is a prospective cohort study of individuals with newly diagnosed advanced prostate cancer enrolled in the International Registry for Men with Advanced Prostate Cancer (IRONMAN) from 2017 to 2023 at U.S. sites. Differences in four pain scores at study enrollment by race were investigated. Cox proportional hazards models and joint longitudinal survival models were fit for each of the scale scores to estimate HRs and 95% confidence intervals (CI) for the association with all-cause mortality. The cohort included 879 individuals (20% self-identifying as Black) enrolled at 38 U.S. sites. Black participants had worse pain at baseline compared with White participants, most notably a higher average pain rating (mean 3.1 vs. 2.2 on a 10-point scale). For each pain scale, higher pain was associated with higher mortality after adjusting for measures of disease burden, particularly for severe bone pain compared with no pain (HR, 2.47; 95% CI: 1.44-4.22). The association between pain and all-cause mortality was stronger for participants with castration-resistant prostate cancer compared with those with metastatic hormone-sensitive prostate cancer and was similar among Black and White participants. Overall, Black participants reported worse pain than White participants, and more severe pain was associated with higher mortality independent of clinical covariates for all pain scales.

SIGNIFICANCE

Black participants with advanced prostate cancer reported worse pain than White participants, and more pain was associated with worse survival. More holistic clinical assessments of pain in this population are needed to determine the factors upon which to intervene to improve quality of life and survivorship, particularly for Black individuals.

First Double-Differential Measurement of Kinematic Imbalance in Neutrino Interactions with the MicroBooNE Detector

We report the first measurement of flux-integrated double-differential quasielasticlike neutrino-argon cross sections, which have been made using the Booster Neutrino Beam and the MicroBooNE detector at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. The data are presented as a function of kinematic imbalance variables which are sensitive to nuclear ground-state distributions and hadronic reinteraction processes. We find that the measured cross sections in different phase-space regions are sensitive to different nuclear effects. Therefore, they enable the impact of specific nuclear effects on the neutrino-nucleus interaction to be isolated more completely than was possible using previous single-differential cross section measurements. Our results provide precision data to help test and improve neutrino-nucleus interaction models. They further support ongoing neutrino-oscillation studies by establishing phase-space regions where precise reaction modeling has already been achieved.

Experience with the US health care system for Black and White patients with advanced prostate cancer

OBJECTIVE

The purpose of this study was to assess differences in reported information about treatment, integration into care, and respect by self-identified Black and White individuals with advanced prostate cancer in the United States.

PATIENTS AND METHODS

This is a prospective cohort study of 701 participants (20% identifying as Black) enrolled in the International Registry for Men with Advanced Prostate Cancer at 37 US sites from 2017 to 2022. Participants were asked six questions from the Cancer Australia National Cancer Control Indicators about their experience with care at study enrollment. Prevalence differences by self-reported race were estimated using marginal standardization of logistic-normal mixed effects models (adjusted for age at enrollment and disease state at enrollment), and 95% CIs were estimated using parametric bootstrapping.

RESULTS

Most participants reported a high quality of care for each question. Black participants generally reported higher care quality compared with White participants. Black participants reported more frequently that they were offered a written assessment and care plan (71%) compared with White participants (58%; adjusted difference, 13 percentage points; 95% CI, 4-23). Black participants also reported more frequently being given the name of nonphysician personnel who would support them (64%) than White participants (52%; adjusted difference, 10; 95% CI, 1-20). Prevalence differences did not differ by disease state at enrollment.

CONCLUSIONS

Black participants generally reported a higher quality of care compared with White participants. This study calls attention to the need to study potential mediating factors and interpersonal aspects of care in this population to improve survivorship.

First Measurement of Quasielastic Λ Baryon Production in Muon Antineutrino Interactions in the MicroBooNE Detector

We present the first measurement of the cross section of Cabibbo-suppressed Λ baryon production, using data collected with the MicroBooNE detector when exposed to the neutrinos from the main injector beam at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. The data analyzed correspond to 2.2×10^{20} protons on target running in neutrino mode, and 4.9×10^{20} protons on target running in anti-neutrino mode. An automated selection is combined with hand scanning, with the former identifying five candidate Λ production events when the signal was unblinded, consistent with the GENIE prediction of 5.3±1.1 events. Several scanners were employed, selecting between three and five events, compared with a prediction from a blinded Monte Carlo simulation study of 3.7±1.0 events. Restricting the phase space to only include Λ baryons that decay above MicroBooNE's detection thresholds, we obtain a flux averaged cross section of 2.0_{-1.7}^{+2.2}×10^{-40}  cm^{2}/Ar, where statistical and systematic uncertainties are combined.

First Constraints on Light Sterile Neutrino Oscillations from Combined Appearance and Disappearance Searches with the MicroBooNE Detector

We present a search for eV-scale sterile neutrino oscillations in the MicroBooNE liquid argon detector, simultaneously considering all possible appearance and disappearance effects within the 3+1 active-to-sterile neutrino oscillation framework. We analyze the neutrino candidate events for the recent measurements of charged-current ν_{e} and ν_{μ} interactions in the MicroBooNE detector, using data corresponding to an exposure of 6.37×10^{20} protons on target from the Fermilab booster neutrino beam. We observe no evidence of light sterile neutrino oscillations and derive exclusion contours at the 95% confidence level in the plane of the mass-squared splitting Δm_{41}^{2} and the sterile neutrino mixing angles θ_{μe} and θ_{ee}, excluding part of the parameter space allowed by experimental anomalies. Cancellation of ν_{e} appearance and ν_{e} disappearance effects due to the full 3+1 treatment of the analysis leads to a degeneracy when determining the oscillation parameters, which is discussed in this Letter and will be addressed by future analyses.

MiniBooNE and MicroBooNE Combined Fit to a 3+1 Sterile Neutrino Scenario

This Letter presents the results from the MiniBooNE experiment within a full "3+1" scenario where one sterile neutrino is introduced to the three-active-neutrino picture. In addition to electron-neutrino appearance at short baselines, this scenario also allows for disappearance of the muon-neutrino and electron-neutrino fluxes in the Booster Neutrino Beam, which is shared by the MicroBooNE experiment. We present the 3+1 fit to the MiniBooNE electron-(anti)neutrino and muon-(anti)neutrino data alone and in combination with MicroBooNE electron-neutrino data. The best-fit parameters of the combined fit with the exclusive charged-current quasielastic analysis (inclusive analysis) are Δm^{2}=0.209  eV^{2}(0.033  eV^{2}), |U_{e4}|^{2}=0.016(0.500), |U_{μ4}|^{2}=0.500(0.500), and sin^{2}(2θ_{μe})=0.0316(1.0). Comparing the no-oscillation scenario to the 3+1 model, the data prefer the 3+1 model with a Δχ^{2}/d.o.f.=24.7/3(17.3/3), a 4.3σ(3.4σ) preference assuming the asymptotic approximation given by Wilks's theorem.

Search for an Excess of Electron Neutrino Interactions in MicroBooNE Using Multiple Final-State Topologies

We present a measurement of ν_{e} interactions from the Fermilab Booster Neutrino Beam using the MicroBooNE liquid argon time projection chamber to address the nature of the excess of low energy interactions observed by the MiniBooNE Collaboration. Three independent ν_{e} searches are performed across multiple single electron final states, including an exclusive search for two-body scattering events with a single proton, a semi-inclusive search for pionless events, and a fully inclusive search for events containing all hadronic final states. With differing signal topologies, statistics, backgrounds, reconstruction algorithms, and analysis approaches, the results are found to be either consistent with or modestly lower than the nominal ν_{e} rate expectations from the Booster Neutrino Beam and no excess of ν_{e} events is observed.

First Measurement of Energy-Dependent Inclusive Muon Neutrino Charged-Current Cross Sections on Argon with the MicroBooNE Detector

We report a measurement of the energy-dependent total charged-current cross section σ(E_{ν}) for inclusive muon neutrinos scattering on argon, as well as measurements of flux-averaged differential cross sections as a function of muon energy and hadronic energy transfer (ν). Data corresponding to 5.3×10^{19} protons on target of exposure were collected using the MicroBooNE liquid argon time projection chamber located in the Fermilab booster neutrino beam with a mean neutrino energy of approximately 0.8 GeV. The mapping between the true neutrino energy E_{ν} and reconstructed neutrino energy E_{ν}^{rec} and between the energy transfer ν and reconstructed hadronic energy E_{had}^{rec} are validated by comparing the data and Monte Carlo (MC) predictions. In particular, the modeling of the missing hadronic energy and its associated uncertainties are verified by a new method that compares the E_{had}^{rec} distributions between data and a MC prediction after constraining the reconstructed muon kinematic distributions, energy, and polar angle to those of data. The success of this validation gives confidence that the missing energy in the MicroBooNE detector is well modeled and underpins first-time measurements of both the total cross section σ(E_{ν}) and the differential cross section dσ/dν on argon.

Search for Neutrino-Induced Neutral-Current Δ Radiative Decay in MicroBooNE and a First Test of the MiniBooNE Low Energy Excess under a Single-Photon Hypothesis

We report results from a search for neutrino-induced neutral current (NC) resonant Δ(1232) baryon production followed by Δ radiative decay, with a ⟨0.8⟩  GeV neutrino beam. Data corresponding to MicroBooNE's first three years of operations (6.80×10^{20} protons on target) are used to select single-photon events with one or zero protons and without charged leptons in the final state (1γ1p and 1γ0p, respectively). The background is constrained via an in situ high-purity measurement of NC π^{0} events, made possible via dedicated 2γ1p and 2γ0p selections. A total of 16 and 153 events are observed for the 1γ1p and 1γ0p selections, respectively, compared to a constrained background prediction of 20.5±3.65(syst) and 145.1±13.8(syst) events. The data lead to a bound on an anomalous enhancement of the normalization of NC Δ radiative decay of less than 2.3 times the predicted nominal rate for this process at the 90% confidence level (C.L.). The measurement disfavors a candidate photon interpretation of the MiniBooNE low-energy excess as a factor of 3.18 times the nominal NC Δ radiative decay rate at the 94.8% C.L., in favor of the nominal prediction, and represents a greater than 50-fold improvement over the world's best limit on single-photon production in NC interactions in the sub-GeV neutrino energy range.

Search for a Higgs Portal Scalar Decaying to Electron-Positron Pairs in the MicroBooNE Detector

We present a search for the decays of a neutral scalar boson produced by kaons decaying at rest, in the context of the Higgs portal model, using the MicroBooNE detector. We analyze data triggered in time with the Fermilab NuMI neutrino beam spill, with an exposure of 1.93×10^{20} protons on target. We look for monoenergetic scalars that come from the direction of the NuMI hadron absorber, at a distance of 100 m from the detector, and decay to electron-positron pairs. We observe one candidate event, with a standard model background prediction of 1.9±0.8. We set an upper limit on the scalar-Higgs mixing angle of θ<(3.3-4.6)×10^{-4} at the 95% confidence level for scalar boson masses in the range (100-200)  MeV/c^{2}. We exclude, at the 95% confidence level, the remaining model parameters required to explain the central value of a possible excess of K_{L}^{0}→π^{0}νν[over ¯] decays reported by the KOTO collaboration. We also provide a model-independent limit on a new boson X produced in K→πX decays and decaying to e^{+}e^{-}.

Consideration of immunomodulatory actions of morphine in COVID-19 - Short report

Cytokine storm in COVID-19 is linked to disease severity and mortality. 40% of patients with severe COVID-19 require mechanical ventilation. Analgesia and sedation are used for treatment of pain, facilitation of mechanical ventilation, or management of acute agitation. Herein, we present the immunomodulating actions of morphine that may either improve or worsen the clinical course of COVID-19 once cytokine storm develops. A literature search was performed to find articles on potential immunomodulatory effects of morphine. Taken together, the results of in vitro and in vivo models in non-COVID-19 conditions suggest that morphine could have a beneficial effect by mitigating the cytokine storm in the early stages of severe COVID-19. In contrast, it could be potentially harmful in late stages of severe COVID-19, especially in the presence of septic shock.

First Measurement of Differential Charged Current Quasielasticlike ν_{μ}-Argon Scattering Cross Sections with the MicroBooNE Detector

We report on the first measurement of flux-integrated single differential cross sections for charged-current (CC) muon neutrino (ν_{μ}) scattering on argon with a muon and a proton in the final state, ^{40}Ar (ν_{μ},μp)X. The measurement was carried out using the Booster Neutrino Beam at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory and the MicroBooNE liquid argon time projection chamber detector with an exposure of 4.59×10^{19} protons on target. Events are selected to enhance the contribution of CC quasielastic (CCQE) interactions. The data are reported in terms of a total cross section as well as single differential cross sections in final state muon and proton kinematics. We measure the integrated per-nucleus CCQE-like cross section (i.e., for interactions leading to a muon, one proton, and no pions above detection threshold) of (4.93±0.76_{stat}±1.29_{sys})×10^{-38}  cm^{2}, in good agreement with theoretical calculations. The single differential cross sections are also in overall good agreement with theoretical predictions, except at very forward muon scattering angles that correspond to low-momentum-transfer events.

Inactivation of the gene encoding the cationic antimicrobial peptide resistance factor MprF increases biofilm formation but reduces invasiveness of Listeria monocytogenes

AIMS

To understand the genetics involved in surface attachment and biofilm formation of Listeria monocytogenes.

METHODS AND RESULTS

An in vitro screen of a Himar1 transposon library of L. monocytogenes strain 15G01 identified three transposants that produced significantly different biofilm levels when compared to the wild-type strain; two mutants exhibited enhanced biofilm formation and one produced less biofilm biomass than the wild-type. The mutant 15G01 mprF::Himar1, which had a transposon insertion in the mprF gene, was selected for further analysis. The mutant produced a more densely populated biofilm on solid surfaces such as stainless steel and polystyrene, as determined using scanning electron and light microscopy. The 15G01 mprF::Himar1 mutant remained viable in biofilms, but showed an increase in sensitivity to the cationic antimicrobial gallidermin. The mutant also displayed reduced invasiveness in CaCo-2 intestinal cells, suggesting virulence properties are compromised by the inactivation of mprF.

CONCLUSIONS

Biofilm formation and gallidermin resistance of L. monocytogenes is influenced by mprF, but this trait is associated with a compromise in invasiveness.

SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY

The presence of pathogenic microorganisms in the food processing environment can cause a significant problem, especially when these microorganisms are established as biofilms. This study shows that the inactivation of the mprF gene results in enhanced biofilm formation and abiotic surface attachment of L. monocytogenes.

Size-dependent influence of NOx on the growth rates of organic aerosol particles

Atmospheric new-particle formation (NPF) affects climate by contributing to a large fraction of the cloud condensation nuclei (CCN). Highly oxygenated organic molecules (HOMs) drive the early particle growth and therefore substantially influence the survival of newly formed particles to CCN. Nitrogen oxide (NOx) is known to suppress the NPF driven by HOMs, but the underlying mechanism remains largely unclear. Here, we examine the response of particle growth to the changes of HOM formation caused by NOx. We show that NOx suppresses particle growth in general, but the suppression is rather nonuniform and size dependent, which can be quantitatively explained by the shifted HOM volatility after adding NOx. By illustrating how NOx affects the early growth of new particles, a critical step of CCN formation, our results help provide a refined assessment of the potential climatic effects caused by the diverse changes of NOx level in forest regions around the globe.

Search for Electron Antineutrino Appearance in a Long-Baseline Muon Antineutrino Beam

Electron antineutrino appearance is measured by the T2K experiment in an accelerator-produced antineutrino beam, using additional neutrino beam operation to constrain parameters of the Pontecorvo-Maki-Nakagawa-Sakata (PMNS) mixing matrix. T2K observes 15 candidate electron antineutrino events with a background expectation of 9.3 events. Including information from the kinematic distribution of observed events, the hypothesis of no electron antineutrino appearance is disfavored with a significance of 2.40σ and no discrepancy between data and PMNS predictions is found. A complementary analysis that introduces an additional free parameter which allows non-PMNS values of electron neutrino and antineutrino appearance also finds no discrepancy between data and PMNS predictions.

P4510Impact of secondary tricuspid regurgitation on survival in heart failure - insights from COMMIT-HF registry

Background

Functional tricuspid regurgitation (fTR) is common in left sided heart disease, especially in patients with concomitant left-sided valvular diseases and can lead to functional impairment and reduced survival. However, the impact of fTR on survival in chronic heart failure with reduced left ventricular ejection fraction (HFrEF) without severe left valvular diseases (LVD) is not fully established. The aim of the present study was to observe if moderate to severe fTR may influence the survival in patients with HFrEF without severe LVD.

Methods

We have analyzed a large single-center registry (n=2731) of HFrEF patients treated in a large-volume cardiovascular center between 2009–2015. After exclusion of patients with severe aortic and mitral valve disease we have included 2435 patients with HFrEF (left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) ≤35%). Functional moderate to severe tricuspid regurgitation without severe left valvular diseases was present in 465 patients. Twelve -month vital status was available for the whole patient population. Univariate and multivariate Cox proportional hazard regression models were performed to evaluate the relationship between moderate to severe fTR and mortality in the study group.

Results

Comparison of clinical data of fTR and non-fTR in HFrEF patients revealed some significant differences (age 63.3±12.9 vs 61.3±12.4, p=0.002; female sex 25.8% vs 17,9%, p<0.001; chronic kidney disease stage III-V 45.3 vs 26.6%, p=0.001; atrial fibrillation 52.4% vs 28.5%, p<0.001). Twelve-month all-cause mortality was over 2-fold higher in the fTR group (21.2% vs 8.1%, p<0.001). There were no significant differences with regard to the medical treatment, implantable defibrillator or cardiac resynchronization therapy. The presence of fTR was identified as an independent echocardiographic factor impaired 12-month all-cause survival (HR 1.59, CI 1.2- 2.09, p<0.001, figure 1)

Conclusion

Apart from the LVEF, the presence of moderate to severe fTR may predict 12-month all-cause mortality in patients with HFrEF.

P5368The prevalence and management of familial hypercholesterolemia in patients with acute coronary syndrome in Poland: results of the TERCET registry

Background

Prevalence of familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is high among patients with coronary artery disease (CAD). However, data on FH among patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) are still scarce.

Purpose

Therefore, we aimed to assess the prevalence, lipid-lowering therapy and short- and long-term outcomes in patients with FH among patients with ACS.

Methods

We finally included 19,582 consecutive patients from the Hyperlipidaemia Therapy in the tERtiary Cardiological cEnTer (TERCET) Registry for years 2006–2018. Among them, there were 7,319 patients admitted with ACS: 3,085 due to ST-segment elevation acute coronary syndrome (STEMI), 2,256 due to NSTEMI, and 1,978 due to unstable angina (UA). Stable CAD [sCAD] group n=12,462 that was treated as a reference one. Based on the personal and familial history of premature cardiovascular disease and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) concentration, the Dutch Lipid Clinic Network (DLCN) algorithm was used for FH diagnosis.

Results

At the time of hospitalization, the overall occurrence of probable/definite FH and possible FH were 1.2% and 13.5% respectively. In patients with ACS, 1.6% had probable/definite FH and 17.0% possible FH. The highest occurrence of FH was observed in STEMI subgroup, where 20.6% of the patients had ≥3 points according to the DLCN criteria. There were significant differences in hypolipemic treatment between the FH subpopulations. In patients with definite/probable FH 92.3% and 91.5% were administered statins at discharge, respectively (including 52.9% prescribed intensive statin therapy). Patients with definite and probable FH had higher 30-day mortality than patients without FH (8.2% and 3.8% vs 2.0%, respectively; p=0.0052). However, no significant differences were observed between the FH groups in the 12-, 36- and 60-month follow-up (Figure). Propensity-score matching analysis showed that definite/probable FH patients had significantly higher all-cause mortality at the 36- and 60-month follow-up in comparison to non-FH subjects (11.4% vs 4.8% and 19.2% vs 7.2%, respectively; p≤0.021 for both).

Conclusions

The prevalence of FH according to the DLCN criteria in the Polish very high-risk population is even 14.7% and is significantly higher in patients with ACS than in patients with sCAD. Among patients included in the Registry, the occurrence of FH rises to 20.6% in the STEMI subgroup, and to 17.2% in the NSTEMI subgroup. Propensity-score matching analysis confirmed that FH itself is a cause of increased all-cause mortality in the long-term follow-up.

First Measurement of Inclusive Muon Neutrino Charged Current Differential Cross Sections on Argon at E_{ν}∼0.8 GeV with the MicroBooNE Detector

We report the first measurement of the double-differential and total muon neutrino charged current inclusive cross sections on argon at a mean neutrino energy of 0.8 GeV. Data were collected using the MicroBooNE liquid argon time projection chamber located in the Fermilab Booster neutrino beam and correspond to 1.6×10^{20} protons on target of exposure. The measured differential cross sections are presented as a function of muon momentum, using multiple Coulomb scattering as a momentum measurement technique, and the muon angle with respect to the beam direction. We compare the measured cross sections to multiple neutrino event generators and find better agreement with those containing more complete treatment of quasielastic scattering processes at low Q^{2}. The total flux integrated cross section is measured to be 0.693±0.010(stat)±0.165(syst)×10^{-38}  cm^{2}.

Significant Excess of Electronlike Events in the MiniBooNE Short-Baseline Neutrino Experiment

The MiniBooNE experiment at Fermilab reports results from an analysis of ν_{e} appearance data from 12.84×10^{20} protons on target in neutrino mode, an increase of approximately a factor of 2 over previously reported results. A ν_{e} charged-current quasielastic event excess of 381.2±85.2 events (4.5σ) is observed in the energy range 200<E_{ν}^{QE}<1250  MeV. Combining these data with the ν[over ¯]_{e} appearance data from 11.27×10^{20} protons on target in antineutrino mode, a total ν_{e} plus ν[over ¯]_{e} charged-current quasielastic event excess of 460.5±99.0 events (4.7σ) is observed. If interpreted in a two-neutrino oscillation model, ν_{μ}→ν_{e}, the best oscillation fit to the excess has a probability of 21.1%, while the background-only fit has a χ^{2} probability of 6×10^{-7} relative to the best fit. The MiniBooNE data are consistent in energy and magnitude with the excess of events reported by the Liquid Scintillator Neutrino Detector (LSND), and the significance of the combined LSND and MiniBooNE excesses is 6.0σ. A two-neutrino oscillation interpretation of the data would require at least four neutrino types and indicate physics beyond the three neutrino paradigm. Although the data are fit with a two-neutrino oscillation model, other models may provide better fits to the data.

Clinical Heterogeneity of Immune Dysregulation, Polyendocrinopathy, Enteropathy, X-Linked Syndrome: A French Multicenter Retrospective Study

Objective

Immune dysregulation, polyendocrinopathy, enteropathy, X-linked (IPEX) syndrome is an autoimmune disease caused by mutations in the forkhead box protein 3 gene (FOXP3), which encodes a key regulator of immune tolerance. The aim of this study was to describe the clinical heterogeneity of the disease in a national French cohort.

Methods

Multicenter retrospective study of patients diagnosed with IPEX syndrome caused by mutations in FOXP3.

Results

Thirty children from 26 families were included. Age at disease onset (median [first to third quartile]) was 1.5 mo [0–84] and at death 3.5 years [0–10.5] (n = 15) indicating a high heterogeneity. Initial presentation was diarrhoea (68%), type 1 diabetes (T1D; 25%), skin lesions (7%) and nephropathy (3%). During the course of the disease the following main symptoms were observed: diarrhoea (100%), skin lesions (85%), T1DM (50%), severe food allergies (39%), haematological disorders (28%), nephropathies (25%), hepatitis (14%) as well as the presence of a variety of autoantibodies. Immunosuppressive mono- or combination therapy led to improvement in eight children. Three boys displayed a stable disease course without any immunosuppressive medication. Overall 10-year survival rate was 43% (42% in transplanted patients and 52% in patients on immunosuppressive therapy). Five out of 22 identified FOXP3 mutations have not been described yet: c.−23 + 1G > A, c.−23 + 5G > A, c.264delC, c.1015C > T and c.1091A > G. The first two produced atypical, attenuated phenotypes. Missense and frameshift mutations affecting the forkhead domain were associated with poor survival (Gehan–Wilcoxon p = 0.002).

Conclusion

The broad phenotypic heterogeneity of IPEX raises questions about modifying factors and justifies early FOXP3 sequencing in suspected cases.

Search for CP Violation in Neutrino and Antineutrino Oscillations by the T2K Experiment with 2.2×10^{21} Protons on Target

The T2K experiment measures muon neutrino disappearance and electron neutrino appearance in accelerator-produced neutrino and antineutrino beams. With an exposure of 14.7(7.6)×10^{20} protons on target in the neutrino (antineutrino) mode, 89 ν_{e} candidates and seven anti-ν_{e} candidates are observed, while 67.5 and 9.0 are expected for δ_{CP}=0 and normal mass ordering. The obtained 2σ confidence interval for the CP-violating phase, δ_{CP}, does not include the CP-conserving cases (δ_{CP}=0, π). The best-fit values of other parameters are sin^{2}θ_{23}=0.526_{-0.036}^{+0.032} and Δm_{32}^{2}=2.463_{-0.070}^{+0.071}×10^{-3}  eV^{2}/c^{4}.

Evaluating the Synergistic Effects of Carica papaya Linn, Vernonia amygdalina Delile, Artemisinin and Iodine As Potential Agents in the Management of Breast Cancer

Background: The rise in breast cancer prevalence rate across the globe and in Africa is a public health issue. Accessibility to the effective and affordable therapeutic options for the management of breast cancer in sub-Saharan Africa is challenging due to high costs, questionable effectiveness and toxicity of treatments available. Studies have documented the use of complimentary and alternative medicine in contemporary cancer treatment in form of standardized phytomedicines. However, the scientific evidence on their efficacies, synergy, safety and adequacy is still lacking. Vernonia amygdalina Delile (leaf extract). Furthermore, Carica papaya Linn (leaf extract), artemisinin and molecular iodine have been previously reported to have activity against breast cancer but their synergistic effect has not been validated. Aim: This study seeks to evaluate synergistic effects of Carica papaya Linn (leaf extract), Vernonia amygdalina Delile (leaf extract), artemisinin and molecular iodine against breast cancer cell lines in vitro and safety profile in selected animal models in vivo. Four specific objectives where stated: (i) to determine inhibitory concentration (IC50) of the plant and compound combinations in vitro against breast cancer cell lines; (ii) to determine effective dose (ED50) of most effective combination(s) against cancer cell lines using animal models (in vivo); (iii) to assess the acute, subacute, chronic toxicity profile of most efficacious combination against breast cancer cell lines; (iv) to identify and characterize bioactive compounds in the combination that shows the highest activity against breast cancer cell lines. Methods: Breast cancer cell lines: MCF 7, MDA-MB-231 will be used to determine IC50 of combinations in vitro. MTT assay will be applied for quantification of viable cells in culture. Both positive and negative controls will be adopted in the study. Mice and rats animal models will be used for toxicity study and determination of ED50 of most active combinations. Bioactive compounds in combination(s) will be identified using chromatographic and spectroscopic methods. Standard procedures according to WHO. Graph Prism computer software will be used to obtain LD50. The results will be statistically analyzed using Student t-test and one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) using SPSS 16 (Statistical Package for Social Sciences) software. Results: Study in progress. Conclusion: This study will provide a significant contribution into aspects of herbal medicine in breast cancer research, as there is limited research and development efforts in respect to new products to treat breast cancer in the African context. The development of natural, efficacious, cost effective, safer, easier accessible breast cancer management alternative is anticipated as a result of the study. Some of the compounds found in the chosen plants may be used as templates for development of new anticancer product.

Role of Pro-Brain Natriuretic Peptide Serum Concentration in the Detection of Pulmonary Hypertension in Patients With End-Stage Lung Diseases Referred for Lung Transplantation

BACKGROUND

Serum N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) concentration is elevated in patients with pulmonary hypertension (PH); however, its role in the detection of PH associated with lung disease is not well established.

AIM

The aim of this study was to assess the value of NT-proBNP in the detection of PH in patients with end-stage lung disease (esLD) referred for lung transplantation.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

The study population consisted of 65 patients: 37 with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), 20 with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and 8 patients with other interstitial lung diseases (75% men, mean age 53.3 ± 9.5 years). Serum concentration of NT-proBNP was assessed with an immunoradiometric assay kit. The mean pulmonary artery pressure (mPAP) was measured using a Swan-Ganz catheter. PH was defined as mPAP ≥ 25 mm Hg.

RESULTS

Median NT-proBNP concentrations were significantly higher in patients with PH than in patients without PH: 139 (49-1236) pg/mL vs 67 (38-116) pg/mL, respectively; P = .016. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis revealed that NT-proBNP concentration higher than 131.5 pg/mL was a predictor of PH with good specificity (81%) and positive predictive value (78.9%) but low sensitivity (55.6%) and negative predictive value (58.6%). The area under the ROC curve of serum NT-proBNP concentration for PH was 0.71 (95% confidence interval 0.57-0.85, P = .039).

CONCLUSION

Serum concentration of NT-proBNP may be useful in the diagnosis of PH in patients with esLD referred for lung transplantation.

Uric acid and obesity-related phenotypes in postmenopausal women

The aim of this study was to find the genetic, metabolic, and nutritional risk factors, which can be associated with uric acid (UA) level. The risk factors related to uricemia were assessed among 271 postmenopausal women without cardiometabolic disorders and hypolipidemic/hypoglycemic treatment selected from a cohort of 1423 obese postmenopausal women. The bioimpedance analysis and biochemical and genetic analyses were performed in two groups characterized by serum UA ≥ 4 mg/dL (238 μmol/L) and < 4 mg/dL. The TaqMan-based real-time PCR method was applied to assess the role of Pro12Ala of peroxisome proliferation-activated receptor (PPAR)gamma-2 and Trp64Arg of beta-3-adrenergic receptor (ADRB) polymorphisms. Women with UA level ≥ 4 mg/dL were characterized by larger body mass, triceps skinfold, waist circumference, body fat amount, and serum insulin, glucose, and triglyceride levels. There was no difference in dietary habits between the analyzed groups. Body mass, waist circumference, body fat amount, diastolic blood pressure, and serum insulin, glucose, high-density lipoprotein, and triglyceride levels, Homeostasis Model Assessment-Insulin Resistance, and energy from the dietary fat influence the UA level ≥ 4 mg/dL; however, the serum UA was not determined by Pro12Ala and Trp64Arg polymorphism analyses. The model of linear regression revealed that the group characterized by body mass index  ≥ 25 kg/m2 and glucose ≥ 100 mg/dL has 4 times increased risk of UA level (p = 0.0009); after adding triglycerides ≥ 150 mg/dL, the risk of UA increased 7 times (p = 0.0216). Increasing the level of UA ≥ 4 mg/dL is associated with overweight, hyperglycemia, and hypertriglyceridemia in women without a history of cardiometabolic disorders. A better management of metabolic factors could help prevent further increase in UA levels.

Prognostic Value of Mean, Diastolic, and Systolic Pulmonary Artery Pressure in Patients With End-stage Lung Disease Referred for Lung Transplantation

BACKGROUND

Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is a common complication in end-stage lung disease (esLD). The aim of this study was to establish the best threshold values for mean, systolic, and diastolic artery pressure (mPAP, dPAP, and sPAP, respectively) to identify patients with esLD referred for lung transplantation and to predict 1-year prognosis.

METHODS

Sixty-five patients were enrolled in the study (75% men) with a mean age of 53.3 ± 9.5 years; 31% had chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), 57% had idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), and 12% had interstitial lung diseases (ILDs). The mean period of observation was 14.4 ± 5 months. We assessed invasively mPAP, dPAP, and sPAP, as well as pulmonary capillary wedge pressure (PCWP), using a Swan-Ganz catheter. Receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) curves were constructed to identify the best cutoff points for mPAP, dPAP, and sPAP to predict survival. The study endpoint was defined as 1-year mortality before transplantation. Survival analysis was completed according to the Kaplan-Meier method.

RESULTS

During follow-up, 30 (46.1%) patients died and 19 (29%) underwent lung transplantation. Based on ROC curve analysis, we estimated mPAP ≥30 mm Hg, dPAP ≥20 mm Hg, and sPAP ≥44 mm Hg as the best threshold values with the highest sensitivity (70%, 70%, and 73%, respectively) and specificity (76%, 69%, and 72%, respectively) and the acceptable area under curve (0.67, 0.68, and 0.72, respectively). The negative predictive values for mPAP, dPAP, and sPAP were higher than the positive predictive values (79%, 77%, and 81% vs 67%, 61%, and 64%, respectively). We also constructed Kaplan-Meier curves for mPAP, dPAP, and sPAP threshold values. There were significant differences in 1-year survival between patients with and without PH for mPAP, dPAP, and sPAP threshold values (P = .005, P = .035, and P < .001; respectively).

CONCLUSION

Elevated mPAP, dPAP, and sPAP are related to worse prognosis in patients with esLD referred for lung transplantation.

The Pandora multi-algorithm approach to automated pattern recognition of cosmic-ray muon and neutrino events in the MicroBooNE detector

The development and operation of liquid-argon time-projection chambers for neutrino physics has created a need for new approaches to pattern recognition in order to fully exploit the imaging capabilities offered by this technology. Whereas the human brain can excel at identifying features in the recorded events, it is a significant challenge to develop an automated, algorithmic solution. The Pandora Software Development Kit provides functionality to aid the design and implementation of pattern-recognition algorithms. It promotes the use of a multi-algorithm approach to pattern recognition, in which individual algorithms each address a specific task in a particular topology. Many tens of algorithms then carefully build up a picture of the event and, together, provide a robust automated pattern-recognition solution. This paper describes details of the chain of over one hundred Pandora algorithms and tools used to reconstruct cosmic-ray muon and neutrino events in the MicroBooNE detector. Metrics that assess the current pattern-recognition performance are presented for simulated MicroBooNE events, using a selection of final-state event topologies.

High incidence of pandrug-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii isolates collected from patients with ventilator-associated pneumonia in Greece, Italy and Spain as part of the MagicBullet clinical trial

OBJECTIVES

To investigate the molecular epidemiology, antimicrobial susceptibility and carbapenem resistance determinants of Acinetobacter baumannii isolates from respiratory tract samples of patients diagnosed with ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) who were enrolled in the MagicBullet clinical trial.

METHODS

A. baumannii isolates were prospectively cultured from respiratory tract samples from 65 patients from 15 hospitals in Greece, Italy and Spain. Susceptibility testing was performed by broth microdilution. Carbapenem resistance determinants were identified by PCR and sequencing. Molecular epidemiology was investigated using rep-PCR (DiversiLab) and international clones (IC) were identified using our in-house database.

RESULTS

Of 65 isolates, all but two isolates (97%) were resistant to imipenem and these were always associated with an acquired carbapenemase, OXA-23 (80%), OXA-40 (4.6%), OXA-58 (1.5%) or OXA-23/58 (1.5%). Resistance to colistin was 47.7%. Twenty-two isolates were XDR, and 20 isolates were pandrug-resistant (PDR). The majority of isolates clustered with IC2 (n = 54) with one major subtype comprising isolates from 12 hospitals in the three countries, which included 19 XDR and 16 PDR isolates.

CONCLUSIONS

Carbapenem resistance rates were very high in A. baumannii recovered from patients with VAP. Almost half of the isolates were colistin resistant, and 42 (64.6%) isolates were XDR or PDR. Rep-PCR confirmed IC2 is the predominant clonal lineage in Europe and suggests the presence of an epidemic XDR/PDR A. baumannii clone that has spread in Greece, Italy and Spain. These data highlight the difficulty in empirical treatment of patients with A. baumannii VAP in centres with a high prevalence of carbapenem-resistant A. baumannii.

No evidence of contemporary interploidy gene flow between the closely related European woodland violets Viola reichenbachiana and V. riviniana (sect. Viola, Violaceae)

Viola reichenbachiana (2n = 4x = 20) and V. riviniana (2n = 8x = 40) are closely related species widely distributed in Europe, often sharing the same habitat throughout their overlapping ranges. It has been suggested in numerous studies that their high intraspecific morphological variability and plasticity might have been further increased by interspecific hybridisation in contact zones, given the sympatry of the species and the incomplete sterility of their hybrid. The aims of this study were to: (i) confirm that V. reichenbachiana and V. riviniana have one 4x genome in common, and (ii) determine the impact of hybridisation and introgression on genetic variation of these two species in selected European populations. For our study, we used 31 Viola populations from four European countries, which were analysed using AFLP and sequencing of a variable plastid intergenic spacer, trnH-psbA. Our analysis revealed that V. reichenbachiana exhibited larger haplotype diversity, having three species-specific haplotypes versus one in V. riviniana. The relationships among haplotypes suggest transfer of common haplotypes into V. riviniana from both V. reichenbachiana and hypothetically the other, now extinct, parental species. AFLP analysis showed low overall genetic diversity of both species, with V. riviniana showing higher among-population diversity. None of the morphologically designated hybrid populations had additive AFLP polymorphisms that would have indicated recent hybridisation. Also, kinship coefficients between both species did not indicate gene flow. V. riviniana showed significant population subdivision and significant isolation by distance, in contrast to V. reichenbachiana. The results indicate lack of gene flow between species, high influence of selfing on genetic variability, as well as probably only localised introgression toward V. riviniana.

Combined Analysis of Neutrino and Antineutrino Oscillations at T2K

T2K reports its first results in the search for CP violation in neutrino oscillations using appearance and disappearance channels for neutrino- and antineutrino-mode beams. The data include all runs from January 2010 to May 2016 and comprise 7.482×10^{20} protons on target in neutrino mode, which yielded in the far detector 32 e-like and 135  μ-like events, and 7.471×10^{20} protons on target in antineutrino mode, which yielded 4 e-like and 66  μ-like events. Reactor measurements of sin^{2}2θ_{13} have been used as an additional constraint. The one-dimensional confidence interval at 90% for the phase δ_{CP} spans the range (-3.13, -0.39) for normal mass ordering. The CP conservation hypothesis (δ_{CP}=0, π) is excluded at 90% C.L.

Effect of ghrelin and leptin receptors genes polymorphisms on production results and physicochemical characteristics of M. pectoralis superficialis in broiler chickens

Ghrelin and leptin and their receptors GHSR and LEPR regulate food intake, the processes in adipose tissue, and the body’s energy homeostasis in mammals. The aim of the present study was to determine the effect of GHSR/Csp6I and LEPR/Bsh1236I polymorphisms on the meat production parameters of broiler chickens reared to 42 days of age. In 318 fast-growing Hubbard Flex and Ross 308 chickens, g.3051C > T substitution at the GHSR locus and a GGTCAA deletion at positions g.3407_3409del and g.3411_3413del were identified. The use of restriction enzyme Bsh1236I showed the presence of two transitions g.352C > T and g.427G > A in LEPR locus. The chickens were classified into four GHSR/Csp6I and into five LEPR/Bsh1236I diplotypes. GHSR and LEPR polymorphisms were found to influence final bodyweight, daily gain, dressing percentage without giblets, proportion of giblets and the quality characteristics of M. pectoralis superficialis. GHSR/Csp6I and LEPR/Bsh1236I had an effect on pH24 h (P < 0.05) and lightness (L*) of M. pectoralis superficialis (P < 0.05), whereas GHSR/Csp6I influenced shear force (P < 0.05) and thawing loss (P < 0.05). GHSR/Csp6I and LEPR/Bsh1236I were found to have no effect on the abdominal fat content in chicken carcasses. Single nucleotide polymorphisms reported in the present study could be used in breeding programs as selection markers for growth traits and poultry meat quality.

The Gene-Diet Associations in Postmenopausal Women with Newly Diagnosed Dyslipidemia

OBJECTIVES

The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between polymorphisms of peroxisome proliferator activated receptor - PPAR gamma-2 (Pro12Ala, C1431T) and beta 3-adrenergic receptor - ADRB3 (Trp64Arg) and dietary habits in a group of postmenopausal women who were not under hypolipidemic treatment.

DESIGN

Genetic, nutritional and anthropometric parameters were measured in 213 dyslipidemic (LDL ≥115 mg/dL) and 58 normolipidemic (LDL<115) postmenopausal women. The PCR-RFLP method were used to determine the distributions of selected alleles and genotype frequencies. Dietary intake of basic components and fatty acids was obtained from a 7-day weighed food record and the bio-impedance method was used to determine nutritional status.

RESULTS

Nearly 79% of analyzed women were in the first-time-diagnosed dyslipidemic state. The dyslipidemic subjects were characterized with higher intake of energy, fat, and saturated fatty acids (SFA). The analysis of the same polymorphisms showed association at the P value <0.05 with nutrients (fat, SFA, and polyunsaturated fatty acid - PUFA and saccharose) and elevated LDL level. Higher PUFA intake in a group of women with the protective Ala12/X polymorphism did not increase the risk of dyslipidemia even though they were characterized by visceral distribution of fat. The Arg64/X polymorphism and higher intake of energy, fat, and arachidic acid intake (C20:0) were associated with dyslipidemic state.

CONCLUSION

Both nutritional and genetic factors are related to lipid profile. The identification of gene-diet associations is likely to provide useful information about the etiology of postmenopausal dyslipidemia and help in effective treatment.

Measurement of Coherent π^{+} Production in Low Energy Neutrino-Carbon Scattering

We report the first measurement of the flux-averaged cross section for charged current coherent π^{+} production on carbon for neutrino energies less than 1.5 GeV, and with a restriction on the final state phase space volume in the T2K near detector, ND280. Comparisons are made with predictions from the Rein-Sehgal coherent production model and the model by Alvarez-Ruso et al., the latter representing the first implementation of an instance of the new class of microscopic coherent models in a neutrino interaction Monte Carlo event generator. We observe a clear event excess above background, disagreeing with the null results reported by K2K and SciBooNE in a similar neutrino energy region. The measured flux-averaged cross sections are below those predicted by both the Rein-Sehgal and Alvarez-Ruso et al.

Serotonergic modulation of 'waiting impulsivity' is mediated by the impulsivity phenotype in humans

In rodents, the five-choice serial reaction time task (5-CSRTT) has been established as a reliable measure of waiting impulsivity being defined as the ability to regulate a response in anticipation of reinforcement. Key brain structures are the nucleus accumbens (NAcc) and prefrontal regions (for example, pre- and infralimbic cortex), which are, together with other transmitters, modulated by serotonin. In this functional magnetic resonance imaging study, we examined 103 healthy males while performing the 5-CSRTT measuring brain activation in humans by means of a paradigm that has been widely applied in rodents. Subjects were genotyped for the tryptophan hydroxylase-2 (TPH2; G-703T; rs4570625) variant, an enzyme specific for brain serotonin synthesis. We addressed neural activation patterns of waiting impulsivity and the interaction between the NAcc and the ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC) using dynamic causal modeling. Genetic influence was examined via interaction analyses between the TPH2 genotype (GG homozygotes vs T allele carriers) and the degree of impulsivity as measured by the 5-CSRTT. We found that the driving input of the vmPFC was reduced in highly impulsive T allele carriers (reflecting a reduced top-down control) in combination with an enhanced response in the NAcc after correct target processing (reflecting an augmented response to monetary reward). Taken together, we found a high overlap of our findings with reports from animal studies in regard to the underlying cognitive processes, the brain regions associated with waiting impulsivity and the neural interplay between the NAcc and vmPFC. Therefore, we conclude that the 5-CSRTT is a promising tool for translational studies.
