Abstract
Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a severe neurodegenerative disorder and the most common form of dementia in elderly individuals, characterized by memory deficits, cognitive decline, and neuropathology. The identification of preclinical markers for AD remains elusive. We employed an ultrasound-evoked spatial memory assay to investigate path integration (PI) in wild type C57BL/6 J and 5xFAD mice. We observed significant recruitment of the mammillary bodies (MB) and subiculum (Sub) - core regions of the Papez circuit during PI, as indicated by increased expression of the immediate early gene c-Fos in C57BL/6 J mice. In 5xFAD mice, amyloid-beta (Aβ) vulnerability in the MB and Sub was evident at 3-months of age, preceding widespread pathology at 5-months of age. In parallel, we detected significant behavioral deficits in PI in the 5XFAD mice at 5- but not 3-months of age. Sex based analysis revealed a more profound deficit in males compared to females at 5-months of age. Our data suggest PI may be as an early indicator of AD, potentially associated with dysfunction within the Papez circuit.

Abstract
Associating contexts with rewards depends on hippocampal circuits, with local inhibitory interneurons positioned to play an important role in shaping activity. Here, we demonstrate that the encoding of context-reward memory requires a ventral hippocampus (vHPC) to nucleus accumbens (NAc) circuit that is gated by cholecystokinin (CCK) interneurons. In a sucrose conditioned place preference (CPP) task, optogenetically inhibiting vHPC-NAc terminals impaired the acquisition of place preference. Transsynaptic rabies tracing revealed vHPC-NAc neurons were monosynaptically innervated by CCK interneurons. Using intersectional genetic targeting of CCK interneurons, ex vivo optogenetic activation of CCK interneurons increased GABAergic transmission onto vHPC-NAc neurons, while in vivo optogenetic inhibition of CCK interneurons increased cFos in these projection neurons. Notably, CCK interneuron inhibition during sucrose CPP learning increased time spent in the sucrose-associated location, suggesting enhanced place-reward memory. Our findings reveal a previously unknown hippocampal microcircuit crucial for modulating the strength of contextual reward learning.

Abstract
Background Gait speed is an important measure of functional ability. This study aimed to investigate the factors associated with gait speed in patients with chronic kidney disease. The study focused on sarcopenic components, plasma uremic or inflammatory marker levels, and quality of life effects. Methods The RolE of AST120 (Renamezin) in sarCOpenia preVEntion in pRe-dialYsis chronic kidney disease patients is a 48-week, randomized controlled, parallel-group, open-label, multicenter trial to determine the role of Renamezin (Daewon Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd.) in patients with chronic kidney disease. The participants were classified into four groups according to gait speed: ≤0.8, 0.8-1.0, ≤1.0-1.3, and ≥1.3 m/sec. Linear regression analysis was performed to identify the factors associated with gait speed. Results The group with a gait speed of ≤0.8 m/sec was the oldest and had the highest proportion of participants with low education level and medical aid. Participants with a gait speed of ≤0.8 m/sec showed the lowest physical and mental component scale scores. The interleukin-6 (IL-6) level tended to be the higher trend in the lowest gait speed group. In the multivariate linear regression analysis adjusted for age, sex, diabetes mellitus, and estimated glomerular filtration rate, insurance status, handgrip strength, IL-6 level, hemoglobin level, mental component scale score, and physical component scale score were significantly associated with gait speed. Conclusion In conclusion, gait speed is associated with handgrip strength, IL-6 level, and various components of quality of life in predialysis chronic kidney disease patients.

Abstract
There were few data regarding the association of volume status with sarcopenia using muscle mass, strength, and physical performance in non-dialysis chronic kidney disease (ND-CKD) patients. We aimed to evaluate the association between volume status and sarcopenia in ND-CKD patients. Our retrospective study analyzed data from a previous study which included ND-CKD patients who had stable renal function. Our study used its baseline data alone. The edema index and muscle mass were measured using a multi-frequency bioimpedance analysis machine. The edema index was calculated using extracellular water/total body water ratio. The skeletal muscle index (SMI, kg/m2) was calculated using appendicular muscle mass per height squared. Handgrip strength (HGS, kg) was measured during the standing position in all patients. Dynamic gait speed (GS, m/s) was evaluated using 6-m walking speed. Patients with both low muscle mass (SMI < 7.0 kg/m2 for men and < 5.7 kg/m2 for women using bioimpedance analysis) and low HGS (< 28 kg for men and < 18 kg for women) or low GS (< 1.0 m/s) were classified as having sarcopenia. The patients (n = 147) were divided into tertiles based on the edema index level. The mean edema index in the low, middle, and high tertiles was 0.377 ± 0.006, 0.390 ± 0.003, and 0.402 ± 0.006, respectively. The edema index was significantly correlated with SMI, HGS, and GS (r = - 0.343 for SMI, - 0.492 for HGS, and - 0.331 for GS; P < 0.001 for three indicators). The SMI, HGS, and GS values were 8.1 ± 1.0 kg/m2, 33.0 ± 9.4 kg, and 1.2 ± 0.2 m/s in the low tertile,7.8 ± 1.2 kg/m2, 30.0 ± 7.5 kg, and 1.0 ± 0.3 m/s in the middle tertile, and 7.2 ± 1.4 kg/m2, 23.7 ± 7.4 kg, and 1.0 ± 0.3 m/s in the high tertile, respectively. Univariate analyses revealed that SMI was lower in patients in the high tertile than in those in the low tertile. HGS was lowest in high tertile, and GS was greatest in the low tertile. The high tertile for predicting sarcopenia had an odds ratio of 6.03 (95% CI, 1.78-20.37; P = 0.004) compared to low or middle tertiles. The results of multivariate analyses were similar to those of the univariate analyses. The subgroup analyses showed that statistical significance was greater in < 65 years and men than ≥ 65 years and women. The present study showed that the edema index is inversely associated with sarcopenia, muscle mass index, strength, and physical performance in ND-CKD patients. However, considering the limitations of our study such as its small sample size, this association was not strong. Further studies that include volume-independent measurements, data on physical activity and diet, and a larger number of patients are warranted to overcome these limitations.

Abstract
We report on a search for compact binary coalescences where at least one binary component has a mass between 0.2 M_{⊙} and 1.0 M_{⊙} in Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo data collected between 1 April 2019 1500 UTC and 1 October 2019 1500 UTC. We extend our previous analyses in two main ways: we include data from the Virgo detector and we allow for more unequal mass systems, with mass ratio q≥0.1. We do not report any gravitational-wave candidates. The most significant trigger has a false alarm rate of 0.14 yr^{-1}. This implies an upper limit on the merger rate of subsolar binaries in the range [220-24200] Gpc^{-3} yr^{-1}, depending on the chirp mass of the binary. We use this upper limit to derive astrophysical constraints on two phenomenological models that could produce subsolar-mass compact objects. One is an isotropic distribution of equal-mass primordial black holes. Using this model, we find that the fraction of dark matter in primordial black holes in the mass range 0.2 M_{⊙}<m_{PBH}<1.0 M_{⊙} is f_{PBH}≡Ω_{PBH}/Ω_{DM}≲6%. This improves existing constraints on primordial black hole abundance by a factor of ∼3. The other is a dissipative dark matter model, in which fermionic dark matter can collapse and form black holes. The upper limit on the fraction of dark matter black holes depends on the minimum mass of the black holes that can be formed: the most constraining result is obtained at M_{min}=1 M_{⊙}, where f_{DBH}≡Ω_{DBH}/Ω_{DM}≲0.003%. These are the first constraints placed on dissipative dark models by subsolar-mass analyses.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Impairment in physical function and physical performance leads to decreased independence and health-related quality of life in people living with chronic kidney disease and end-stage kidney disease. Physical activity and exercise in kidney care are not priorities in policy development. We aimed to identify global policy-related enablers, barriers, and strategies to increase exercise participation and physical activity behavior for people living with kidney disease. DESIGN AND METHODS Guided by the Behavior Change Wheel theoretical framework, 50 global renal exercise experts developed policy barriers and enablers to exercise program implementation and physical activity promotion in kidney care. The consensus process consisted of developing themes from renal experts from North America, South America, Continental Europe, United Kingdom, Asia, and Oceania. Strategies to address enablers and barriers were identified by the group, and consensus was achieved. RESULTS We found that policies addressing funding, service provision, legislation, regulations, guidelines, the environment, communication, and marketing are required to support people with kidney disease to be physically active, participate in exercise, and improve health-related quality of life. We provide a global perspective and highlight Japanese, Canadian, and other regional examples where policies have been developed to increase renal physical activity and rehabilitation. We present recommendations targeting multiple stakeholders including nephrologists, nurses, allied health clinicians, organizations providing renal care and education, and renal program funders. CONCLUSIONS We strongly recommend the nephrology community and people living with kidney disease take action to change policy now, rather than idly waiting for indisputable clinical trial evidence that increasing physical activity, strength, fitness, and function improves the lives of people living with kidney disease.

Abstract
Hippocampal input to the hypothalamus is known to be critically involved in mediating the negative feedback inhibition of stress response. However, the underlying neural circuitry has not been fully elucidated. Using a combination of rabies tracing, pathway-specific optogenetic inhibition, and cell-type specific synaptic silencing, the present study examined the role of hippocampal input to the hypothalamus in modulating neuroendocrine and behavioral responses to stress in mice. Transsynaptic rabies tracing revealed that the ventral hippocampus (vHPC) is monosynaptically connected to inhibitory cells in the anterior hypothalamic nucleus (AHN-GABA cells). Optogenetic inhibition of the vHPC→AHN pathway during a restraint stress resulted in a prolonged and exaggerated release of corticosterone, accompanied by an increase in stress-induced anxiety behaviors. Consistently, tetanus toxin-mediated synaptic inhibition in AHN-GABA cells produced a remarkably similar effect on the corticosterone release profile, corroborating the role of HPC→AHN pathway in mediating the hippocampal control of stress responses. Lastly, we found that chronic inhibition of AHN-GABA cells leads to cognitive impairments in both object and social recognition memory. Together, our data present a novel hypothalamic circuit for the modulation of adaptive stress responses, the dysfunction of which has been implicated in various affective disorders.

Gait speed (GS) is an important measure of functional ability. The aim of this study was to investigate the factors associated with GS in patients with chronic kidney disease with respect to sarcopenic component, plasma uremic or inflammatory markers and quality of life.
METHOD
The RolE of AST120 in sarCOpenia preVEntion in pRe-dialYsis chronic kidney disease patients is a 48-week, randomized controlled, parallel group, open-label, multicentre trial to determine the role of AST-120 in patients with chronic kidney disease. A total of 150 study participants were recruited from six general hospitals in South Korea. The participants were classified into four groups according to GS: ≤0.8, 0.8–1.0, ≤1.0–1.3 and ≥1.3 m/s. Linear regression analysis was performed to identify the factors associated with GS.
RESULTS
The mean GS was 1.06 ± 0.3 m/s. The mean age of the total population was 65.0 ± 10.8 years, and 97 (64.7%) were males. The group with a GS ≤ 0.8 m/s was the oldest and had the highest proportion of participants with low education level and medical aid. The levels of albumin, creatinine, eGFR and proteinuria did not differ between the groups. Participants with a GS ≤ 0.8 m/s showed the lowest level of physical component scale (PCS) and mental component scale (MCS). The levels of IS, TNF-α and myostatin were not different between the groups; however, the level of IL-6 showed a higher trend in the lower GS group. HGS and GS showed weak correlations with one another (R2 = 0.066, P < .001); however, GS and the SMI were not significantly associated (R2 = 0.016, P = .119).
In the multivariate linear regression analysis adjusted for age, sex, diabetes, and estimated glomerular filtration rate, medical aid (β = –18.4, P = .007), handgrip strength (β = 0.85, P = .031), interleukin-6 level (β = –13.2, P = .001), haemoglobin (β = 2.84, P = .041), MCS (β = 0.45, P < .001) and PCS (β = 0.51, P < .001) were significantly associated with GS. Specifically, physical functioning, role limitation due to physical health problems and bodily pain in PCS, role limitation due to emotional problems, vitality and social functioning in MCS were statistically significantly correlated with GS. In the kidney disease-specific scale, symptom/problem, work status, cognitive function, quality of social interactions, social support and overall health rating in kidney disease were statistically significantly correlated with GS in the multivariate analysis.
CONCLUSION
GS is associated with handgrip strength, interleukin-6 and various components of quality of life including MCS and PCS.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS
Serum myostatin and indoxyl sulfate (IS) levels are increased according to renal function decline and are the main mediators of chronic kidney disease (CKD)-related sarcopenia. However, a recent report showed that myostatin levels were increased in balance-trained CKD patients associated with increased lean mass. The aim of this study was to assess the association between serum myostatin, IS levels and sarcopenia in CKD patients.
METHOD
Baseline data from the RECOVERY study (clinicaltrials.gov: NCT03788252) conducted from November 2018 to June 2020 were analyzed in 150 CKD patients (mean CKD-EPI eGFR: 33.8 ± 12.5). A Six-meter gait speed test and handgrip strength (HGS) were assessed. Skeletal muscle index (SMI) was measured by using an InBody S10 based on bioelectrical impedance analysis. Sarcopenia was assessed using the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia 2019. Serum myostatin levels were assessed by an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and serum total IS levels were measured using a high-performance liquid chromatography fluorescence detector.
RESULTS
The proportion of patients with sarcopenia was higher (12.0% versus 4.1%, P = 0.075) in patients with high IS levels (≥0.365 mg/dL) but was lower (4.2% versus 11.8%, P = 0.087) in patients with high myostatin levels (≥4.5 ng/mL). SMI and HGS were significantly lower in patients with high IS levels but were significantly higher in patients with high myostatin levels. IS levels showed a negative correlation with eGFR, SMI and HGS but myostatin levels showed a positive correlation with SMI, and HGS and no correlation with eGFR. However, the myostatin/SMI ratio reflected muscle mass was negatively associated with eGFR and was not associated with SMI and HGS. Sarcopenia was independently associated with age and IS levels after adjustment for gender, diabetes mellitus, creatinine and myostatin/SMI.
CONCLUSION
Serum total IS levels are an important predictor for sarcopenia, but serum myostatin levels indicate muscle mass in CKD patients with lower eGFR. Further studies are needed to find new markers related to muscle mass and myostatin such as the myostatin/SMI ratio in CKD patients with lower eGFR.

Abstract
Introduction This study aimed to evaluate the association between volume status and body composition or physical performance measurements in hemodialysis patients. Methods A total of 84 patients were enrolled in this study. The participants were divided into tertiles based on the edema index (extracellular water/total body water): low, middle, and high tertiles. Serum albumin and serum high-sensitivity C-reactive protein levels were measured. The appendicular lean mass index (ALM/Ht2, kg/m2) was measured using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. The thigh muscle area index (TMA/Ht2, cm2/m2) was measured using CT. Extracellular and total body water and phase angles were obtained using bioimpedance analysis. The results of the subjective global assessment (SGA), hand-grip strength (HGS), gait speed (GS), short physical performance battery (SPPB), sit-to-stand for 30-second (STS30) test, timed up and go (TUG), sit-to-stand test performed five times (STS5), and 6-minute walk (6-MW) tests were also evaluated. Results On the univariate analysis, the SGA score and phase angle in the high tertile group were the lowest among the three groups. On multivariate analysis, TMA/Ht2 and phase angle in the high tertile were the lowest among the three groups. Inverse correlations were observed between edema index and TMA/Ht2, SGA score, phase angle, HGS, GS, SPPB, STS30, or 6-MW. Positive correlations were observed between the edema index and the STS5 or TUG test. The sensitivity and specificity for predicting low GS were 34.5 and 89.7%, respectively. The values for predicting low SPPB were 68.0 and 79.7%, respectively. Conclusion This study demonstrates that high volume status may be associated with decreased muscle mass and physical performance regardless of inflammatory or nutritional status.

BACKGROUND The prevalence of sarcopenia is increased with declining renal function. Elevated serum indoxyl sulfate levels are associated with poor skeletal muscle conditions. We aimed to determine the effects of AST-120, the oral adsorbent of indoxyl sulfate, on sarcopenia and sarcopenia-associated factors in chronic kidney disease patients. METHODS This was a 48 week, randomized controlled, parallel group, open-label, multicentre trial (n = 150). The participants were randomly assigned in a 1:1 ratio to the control (CON) and AST-120 (Renamezin®, REN) groups. Outcome measurements were performed at baseline and every 24 weeks for 48 weeks. The primary outcome was gait speed difference ≥0.1 m/s between the two groups, and secondary outcomes included hand grip strength, muscle mass, and health-related quality of life. RESULTS A difference of gait speed ≥0.1 m/s was not observed during the study period. The mean dynamic-start gait speed in the REN group increased from baseline to 48 weeks (1.04 ± 0.31 to 1.08 ± 0.32 m/s, P = 0.019). The static-start gait speed changed by -0.024 and 0.04 m/s (P = 0.049) in the CON and REN groups over 48 weeks, respectively. Hand grip strength decreased during the first 24 weeks and did not significantly change over the next 24 weeks in either group. The proportion of low muscle mass or sarcopenia at baseline was larger in the REN group than in the CON group, but the difference attenuated over the study period [low muscle mass and sarcopenia in the CON and REN groups at baseline, 4.0% vs. 18.9% (P = 0.004) and 2.7% vs. 13.5% (P = 0.017); at 24 weeks, 2.9% vs. 13.6% (P = 0.021) and 1.4% vs. 10.5% (P = 0.029); and at 48 weeks, 7.6% vs. 12.9% (P = 0.319) and 4.5% vs. 8.1% (P = 0.482), respectively]. Bodily pain, vitality, symptoms/problems, and cognitive function in the REN group improved, while the quality of social interactions and the kidney disease effects in the CON group aggravated from baseline to 48 weeks. Interaction between time and group was evident only in symptoms/problems, cognitive function, and kidney disease effects. CONCLUSIONS The addition of AST-120 to standard treatment in chronic kidney disease patients did not make a significant difference in gait speed, although AST-120 modestly had beneficial effects on gait speed change and quality of life and showed the potential to improve sarcopenia. Abstract
ABSTRACT Few studies have examined the optimal adjustment indices for predicting low muscle strength or physical performance in hemodialysis (HD) patients. Thus, the present study aimed to identify optimal adjustment indices for predicting strength and/or physical performance in HD patients.Our study was performed at an HD center (n = 84). Appendicular lean mass (ALM; kg) was calculated using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. ALM were adjusted to body weight, height2 (Ht2), body surface area, or body mass index. Physical performance tests (sit-to-stand test performed 5 times test, sit-to-stand for 30 second test, 6-minute walk test, timed up and go test, gait speed, hand grip strength, average steps per day (AST), and short physical performance battery) were also evaluated. Participants with a below median value for each physical performance test were defined as the low group.The mean participant age was 55.6 ± 12.8 years; 44 (52.4%) were men. The univariate analysis revealed a significant difference in ALM/Ht2 values between the low and normal physical performance group in all physical performance tests except short physical performance battery. The multivariate analysis revealed a significant difference in ALM/Ht2 between the low and normal physical performance groups in hand grip strength, 5 times sit-to-stand test, sit-to-stand for 30-second test, and AST. In women on HD, most indices were not associated with physical performance or strength.We demonstrated that, in men on HD, ALM/Ht2 may be the most valuable among various variables adjusted for ALM for predicting physical performance or strength.

Abstract
Purpose This study evaluated the difference in physical performance tests, strength, and total and regional mass using a comprehensive dataset between maintenance hemodialysis (HD) patients and a healthy population. Patients and Methods A total of 84 HD patients were enrolled. We selected 42 healthy participants (HPs) age- and sex-matched to the 84 HD patients as controls. Collected data were sex, age, body mass index (BMI), laboratory findings, total and regional measurements for lean mass or fat mass, thigh muscle area (TMA), handgrip strength, and physical performance measurements. Results There were no significant differences in BMI, total lean mass, or total fat mass including regional fat mass between the two groups. Lean leg mass and TMA were greater in HPs than in HD patients. All measurements of physical performance, including handgrip strength, were better in HPs than in HD patients. A multivariate analysis of lean leg mass, TMA, and physical performance measures had similar results to the same data studied with a univariate analysis. Conclusion We demonstrated that HD patients had decreased physical performance and strength compared to HPs. The difference in leg muscle mass was most prominent among the total and regional body compositions between HPs and HD patients.

Abstract
A stimbiotic is defined as a product that stimulates a fiber-degrading microbiome to increase fiber fermentability. The aim of this study was to examine if it is more advantageous to feed a stimbiotic (xylanase + xylo-oligosaccharides [STB]) or a combination of xylanase and beta-glucanase (Xyl + BG) to broilers fed wheat-barley based diets with differing AME levels. Cobb 500 broilers (n = 480, 80 birds per treatment) were fed 6 dietary treatments in a 2 × 3 factorial arrangement; 2 AME levels, ‘High’ or ‘Low’, which differed by 100 kcal ME/kg, and 3 additive supplementations, with no supplemental additives, STB or Xyl + BG. Diets were fed as 3 phases, starter (d 0–14), grower (d 14–21) and finisher (d 21–35). On bird age d 14, 21 and 35, total pen body weight and feed intake were determined, and feed conversion ratio corrected for mortality (cFCR) was calculated. On d 21 and d 35 ileal viscosity and beta-glucan content and caecal SCFA concentration were determined. Additive suplementation had no impact on cFCR in birds fed the low AME diet, but in birds fed the high AME diet the cFCR value was reduced in the presence of the additives (P = 0.001 and P = 0.015, at d 14–21 and d 21–35, respectively). At d 21, cecal SCFA concentration was consistently higher (P = 0.015), and ileal beta-glucan level lower (P = 0.002), in birds fed the diet supplemented with STB compared to those without additives. At d 35, ileal viscosity was lower in birds fed STB compared to those fed the diet without supplementation of additives, irrespective of diet AME level (P = 0.017). These results suggest that both STB and Xyl + BG ameliorate the antinutritive effects of the non-starch polysaccharides (NSP) present in wheat-barley based diets, resulting in improved bird performance. However, supplementation with STB induces a comparatively greater positive effect on NSP hydrolysis and SCFA production.

Abstract
Introduction: This study aimed to evaluate the association between the psoas muscle (PM) index with or without fatty infiltration and various indices associated with muscle mass in hemodialysis (HD) patients. Methods: We included stable HD patients (n = 83). The collected data included subjective global assessment (SGA) score, ASM/Ht2 (appendicular skeletal muscle mass divided by the squared height in meters), gait speed (GS; m/s), and handgrip strength (HGS; kg). The abdominal computed tomography (CT) image was obtained using a CT scanner. The PM and normal-density PM (NPM) indices (mm2/m2) were calculated using the whole PM area or the area with an attenuation range of 35–100 HU divided by the squared height in meters. Results: Correlation coefficients for the SGA score, ASM/Ht2, HGS, and GS were greater for the NPM index than for the PM index. The linear regression analysis showed that, on multivariate analysis, the NPM index was significantly associated with the SGA score, ASM/Ht2, and GS. However, the PM index was significantly associated with the SGA score and ASM/Ht2 but not with HGS or GS. For calculating the low GS, the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve area was significantly greater for the NPM index than for the PM index (P = 0.012). Conclusion: The present study suggested that the NPM index excluding fatty infiltration may be an early and useful indicator for detecting muscle strength and physical performance among HD patients.

Abstract
Background/Aims: Elevated levels of serum myostatin have been proposed as a biomarker for sarcopenia. Recent studies have shown that elevated level of serum myostatin was associated with physical fitness and performance. This study aimed to examine the significance of myostatin in the association between muscle mass and physical performance in the elderly. Methods: This cross-sectional study is based on the Korean Frailty and Aging Cohort study involving 1053 people aged 70 years or over. Anthropometric, physical performance, and laboratory data were collected. Results: The mean age of the participants was 75.8 years, and 50.7% of them were female. Serum myostatin levels in men (3.7 ± 1.2 vs. 3.2 ± 1.1 ng/mL, p < 0.001) were higher compared with that in women. Serum myostatin level was associated with appendicular skeletal muscle mass (ASM) index and eGFR by cystatin C. Serum myostatin/ASM ratio was associated with handgrip strength in women. Conclusion: Higher serum myostatin levels were related with higher muscle mass and better physical performances in the elderly. Serum myostatin/ASM ratio may be a predictor for physical performance rather than myostatin.

Abstract
We search for gravitational-wave signals produced by cosmic strings in the Advanced LIGO and Virgo full O3 dataset. Search results are presented for gravitational waves produced by cosmic string loop features such as cusps, kinks, and, for the first time, kink-kink collisions. A template-based search for short-duration transient signals does not yield a detection. We also use the stochastic gravitational-wave background energy density upper limits derived from the O3 data to constrain the cosmic string tension Gμ as a function of the number of kinks, or the number of cusps, for two cosmic string loop distribution models. Additionally, we develop and test a third model that interpolates between these two models. Our results improve upon the previous LIGO-Virgo constraints on Gμ by 1 to 2 orders of magnitude depending on the model that is tested. In particular, for the one-loop distribution model, we set the most competitive constraints to date: Gμ≲4×10^{-15}. In the case of cosmic strings formed at the end of inflation in the context of grand unified theories, these results challenge simple inflationary models.

Abstract
Introduction: Alkaline phosphatase (ALP) is an indicator for checking liver or bone disorders, but recent studies have shown the possibility of an additive indicator beyond the simple mineral-bone status in dialysis patients. The aim of the study was to evaluate the ALP level and various indicators for malnutrition, physical performance, or hospitalization in patients on hemodialysis (HD). Methods: This study was an observational study (n = 84). We included all patients undergoing HD with the following criteria: age ≥ 20 years, duration of dialysis ≥ 6 months, ability to ambulate without an assistive device, ability to communicate with the interviewer, and no hospitalization within the last 3 months before enrollment. Furthermore, none of the patients had liver disease. We recommended abstinence of alcohol for ≥ 1 month for the duration of the study. The patients were divided into tertiles based on the ALP level. Muscle mass [appendicular muscle mass index using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (ASM/Ht2), thigh muscle area index using computed tomography (TMA/Ht2)], strength [handgrip strength (HGS)], and physical performance [gait speed (GS), sit-to-stand for 30-s test (STS30), 6-min walk test (6-MWT), or Short Physical Performance Battery test (SPPB)] were evaluated. The number of hospitalizations was also evaluated. Results: The ALP level in the low, middle, and high tertiles was 50.5 ± 7.5, 69.8 ± 5.4, and 113.3 ± 47.3 IU/l, respectively. The high tertile group showed the poorest trends in ASM/Ht2, TMA/Ht2, HGS, GS, STS30, and 6-MWT compared to the other tertile groups. Logistic regression analysis showed that the high tertile group for low HGS, low GS, or low SPPB had a higher odds ratio compared to the other tertiles. Subgroup analyses according to age, sex and diabetes mellitus showed similar trends as in the total cohort. Hospitalization-free survival rates after 300 days in the high tertile and the other tertiles were 53.8 and 77.2%, respectively (P = 0.105). Conclusion: The present study demonstrated that ALP is associated with muscle mass, strength, and physical performance in patients on maintenance HD. In addition, the trend showed better hospitalization-free survival in the low or middle tertiles than in the high tertile. ALP can be considered as a simple and useful indicator to detect malnutrition, physical performance, or hospitalization in patients on HD.

Abstract
There is a need for effective wound healing through rapid wound closure, reduction of scar formation, and acceleration of angiogenesis. Hydrogel is widely used in tissue engineering, but it is not an ideal solution because of its low vascularization capability and poor mechanical properties. In this study, gelatin methacrylate (GelMA) was tested as a viable option with tunable physical properties. GelMA hydrogel incorporating a vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) mimicking peptide was successfully printed using a three-dimensional (3D) bio-printer owing to the shear-thinning properties of hydrogel inks. The 3D structure of the hydrogel patch had high porosity and water absorption properties. Furthermore, the bioactive characterization was confirmed by cell culture with mouse fibroblasts cell lines (NIH 3T3) and human umbilical vein endothelial cells. VEGF peptide, which is slowly released from hydrogel patches, can promote cell viability, proliferation, and tubular structure formation. In addition, a pig skin wound model was used to evaluate the wound-healing efficacy of GelMA-VEGF hydrogel patches; the results suggest that the GelMA-VEGF hydrogel patch can be used for wound dressing.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This retrospective study investigated the nature and severity of venom-induced consumption coagulopathy (VICC) and determined the clotting factors involved in VICC in patients after envenomation by South Korea's snakes. Additionally, we studied the effectiveness of antivenom for the treatment of VICC after envenomation. METHODS Included patients were divided into three groups according to the severity of VICC (no VICC, partial VICC, and complete VICC). Data, including changes in coagulation parameters during hospitalization and clotting factors at presentation, were collected and analyzed. RESULTS One hundred nineteen patients who presented at our emergency department within 3 h after snake envenomation were included. VICC developed in 34 patients (27 patients with partial VICC and 7 patients with complete VICC). Two of 34 patients with VICC required blood transfusions. Five patients with complete VICC had an undetectable fibrinogen concentration at presentation. Three patients with complete VICC had an unmeasurable INR and aPTT within 24 h. The median times of the most extreme values were 10 h for INR, 12 h for aPTT, and 16 h for fibrinogen after presentation in the VICC group. The D-dimer concentration peaked at a median of 63.5 h after presentation. The activities of factors II and X were significantly reduced in the complete VICC group (factor II: 88 (84-99.3)% in the non-VICC group vs. 69 (49.5-83.5)% in the complete VICC group; factor X:94 (83-102) in the non-VICC group vs. 70 (66.5-79.8)% in the complete VICC group), while there was no difference in factor V activity at presentation. The time from bite to first antivenom administration did not correlate with the time course and most extreme concentrations for fibrinogen and D-dimer within the VICC groups. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION VICC occurs in approximately one-quarter of snakebite patients in South Korea; however, VICC itself does not appear to lead to clinical deterioration. Fibrinogen is an early diagnostic maker for complete VICC. Clotting factors II and X are involved in VICC. Future investigations should explore the mechanism of VICC from Korean snakebites and the effect of antivenom on VICC.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The incidence of skin cancer is increasing because of the ageing population and ultraviolet exposure, and previous studies have revealed that long-term use of hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ), an antihypertensive agent, has been associated with an increased risk of nonmelanoma skin cancer (NMSC). However, the association of NMSC and HCTZ within East Asian populations is unclear. AIM To investigate the risk of NMSC in Korean subjects using HCTZ. METHODS A retrospective cohort study was conducted using the administrative healthcare data. The study enrolled 62 243 patients exposed to HCTZ with a cumulative dose of ≥ 2500 mg and 62 243 unexposed subjects matched 1 : 1 with the patients for age, sex and income level. RESULTS There was a significant difference in the cumulative incidence of NMSC between the two groups (log-rank P < 0.01). Cox regression analysis was conducted after adjusting for potential confounders, and showed the risk for NMSC in the group exposed to HCTZ was significantly higher than that of the unexposed group (hazard ratio = 1.48; 95% CI 1.03-2.13). In the subgroup analysis, the oldest age group (≥ 70 years) showed increased cumulative incidence of NMSC with statistical significance compared with the unexposed control group (log-rank P < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS In this study, we revealed that the cumulative use of HCTZ (≥ 2500 mg) could increase the risk of NMSC in Koreans, especially the older age group. Thus, HCTZ could be a risk factor for NMSC in East Asian as well as white populations.

BACKGRUOUND Dialysis patients are prone to having disabilities. We aimed to evaluate the association between disability and various clinical outcomes in Korean dialysis patients. METHODS This study consisted of 1,615 dialysis patients from 27 centers. We evaluated disability by using four questions on the activities of daily living (ADLs) concerning whether help was needed for feeding, dressing/undressing, getting in/out of bed, or taking a bath/shower. We divided the patients into three groups: no disability (Non-D, none of the four ADL domains required help; n=1,312), mild disability (Mild-D, one ADL domain required some/full help; n=163), or moderate to severe disability (MS-D, two or more ADL domains required some/full help; n=140). We evaluated falls, frailty, health-related quality of life (HRQoL), mortality, and hospitalization. RESULTS The numbers of participants with a fall during the last 1 year were 199 (15.2%), 42 (25.8%), and 44 (31.4%) in the Non-D, Mild-D, and MS-D groups, respectively (p<0.001). The numbers of participants with frailty in the Non-D, Mild-D, and MS-D groups were 381 (29.0%), 84 (51.5%), and 93 (66.4%), respectively (p<0.001). In both univariate and multivariate analyses, the physical component scale and mental component scale scores decreased as the grade of disability increased (p<0.001 for both scores). Hospitalization-free survival rate at 500 days was 64.2%, 56.7%, and 51.1% in the Non-D, Mild-D, and MS-D, respectively (p=0.001 for trend). Patient survival rate at 500 days was 95.3%, 89.5%, and 92.3% in the Non-D, Mild-D, and MS-D, respectively (p=0.005 for trend). CONCLUSION Disability was associated with falls, frailty, HRQoL scales, and survival trends in Korean dialysis patients.

Abstract
On May 21, 2019 at 03:02:29 UTC Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo observed a short duration gravitational-wave signal, GW190521, with a three-detector network signal-to-noise ratio of 14.7, and an estimated false-alarm rate of 1 in 4900 yr using a search sensitive to generic transients. If GW190521 is from a quasicircular binary inspiral, then the detected signal is consistent with the merger of two black holes with masses of 85_{-14}^{+21} M_{⊙} and 66_{-18}^{+17} M_{⊙} (90% credible intervals). We infer that the primary black hole mass lies within the gap produced by (pulsational) pair-instability supernova processes, with only a 0.32% probability of being below 65 M_{⊙}. We calculate the mass of the remnant to be 142_{-16}^{+28} M_{⊙}, which can be considered an intermediate mass black hole (IMBH). The luminosity distance of the source is 5.3_{-2.6}^{+2.4} Gpc, corresponding to a redshift of 0.82_{-0.34}^{+0.28}. The inferred rate of mergers similar to GW190521 is 0.13_{-0.11}^{+0.30} Gpc^{-3} yr^{-1}.

Abstract
CONTENT This study investigated the incidence, progression and clinical course of myocardial injury-related snake envenomation in South Korea. In addition, this study evaluated whether antivenom guidelines are appropriate to control envenomation in patients with myocardial injury. METHODS The study included 198 patients who received antivenom after a snakebite, and they were divided into two groups according to evidence of myocardial injury (defined as elevated troponin I or ischemic change on electrocardiogram) at presentation. Data including serial troponin I, echocardiogram/coronary angiogram findings, the clinical course, and treatment were collected and analyzed. RESULTS The incidence of myocardial injury at presentation was 15.2%. The troponin I level was 0.11 (0.07-0.56) ng/ml at presentation and tended to decrease over 24 h. Echocardiograms revealed neither regional wall motion abnormalities nor left ventricular dysfunction in 15 of 17 patients, while two patients showed signs of coronary artery stenosis on echocardiograms and coronary angiograms. However, compared with patients without myocardial injury, patients with myocardial injury had a higher frequency of systemic envenomation complications, including bleeding, respiratory failure, hypotension, acute kidney injury, thrombocytopenia and venom-induced consumption coagulopathy (VICC). The patients with myocardial injury at presentation needed significantly more frequent and larger doses of antivenom than indicated by the initial severity of envenomation. Multivariate analysis showed that myocardial injury was associated with the need for additional antivenom administration after initial administration. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION Myocardial injury is not uncommon after snake envenomation in Korea. Although myocardial injury itself seems to be benign, the clinical course of patients with myocardial injury is complicated, and myocardial injury is associated with the need for additional antivenom administration. The optimal use of antivenom to control envenomation in patents with myocardial injury after snake envenomation in South Korea should be established.

Background and Aims
Sarcopenia in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) is highly prevalent and leads to high rate of morbidity and mortality. The role of indoxyl sulfate (IS) to develop muscle wasting has been researched and proved in several animal model studies. However, there is no human data showing this relationship in CKD population. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the association between serum IS levels and each component of sarcopenia in nondialysis dependent-CKD (NDD-CKD) patients.
Method
We enrolled 150 NDD-CKD adult patients from 6 medical centers and collected data of demographics, blood chemistry such as indoxyl sulfate, interleukin (IL)-6, and estimated glomerular filtration rate using MDRD equation (eGFR), and body mass index (BMI, kg/m2). We also measured hand-grip strength (HGS, kg), walking speed (WS, m/s), skeletal muscle mass (SMM, kg) by bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA).
Results
The numbers of male sex was 97 (64.7%). Mean age was 63.7±10.8 years old. The numbers of patients with diabetes mellitus was 77 (52.0%). Charlson comorbidity index (CCI) score was 3.9 ± 1.9. The stage of CKD ranged from 3 to 5 (eGFR=33.7±12.0 ml/min/1.73m2, mean±SD). Correlation coefficients with indoxyl sulfate levels were 0.211 for serum IL-6 level (P = 0.010), -0.212 for HGS (P = 0.009), -0.188 for WS (P = 0.021), -0.237 for SMM (P = 0.004), and -0.168 for BMI (P = 0.041), respectively. Correlation analysis showed that indoxyl sulfate levels had inverse association significantly with HGS, WS, SMM, and BMI and were positively associated with serum IL-6 levels.
Conclusion
Our study shows that higher serum indoxyl sulfate level was significantly associated with lower levels of muscle mass, strength, and physical performance function and higher inflammation status in non-dialysis dependent CKD patients. We suggest that the role of AST120 in prevention or treatment of sarcopenia be studied in this CKD population.

INTRODUCTION Identification of the risk factors and treatment of the decrease in muscle mass or strength are important to improve the prognosis of patients undergoing hemodialysis (HD). Previous studies have investigated the association between vitamin D level and muscle mass or strength in patients undergoing HD. However, there are conflicting results regarding this association. OBJECTIVE To evaluate the association between vitamin D level and muscle mass indices, strength, or physical performance in patients undergoing HD. METHODS This study was performed in a tertiary medical center. We included patients undergoing HD aged ≥20 years. A total of 84 patients were enrolled. The patients were divided into tertiles based on the 25-hydroxy (25-OH) vitamin D level as follows: lowest tertile (Lowest T, n = 28), middle tertile (Middle T, n = 28), and highest tertile (Highest T, n = 28). We evaluated the association between the tertiles and clinical outcomes including nutritional status, muscle mass, muscle function, handgrip strength (HGS), physical performance, and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) scales. RESULTS There were no significant differences in the muscle mass indices and nutritional markers according to tertiles of 25-OH vitamin D level. However, 25-OH vitamin D level as a continuous variable or the tertile of 25-OH vitamin D level as a categorical variable was positively associated with HGS. Logistic and linear regression analyses showed a consistent superiority of the Highest T in HGS compared with the Lowest or Middle T. Although the statistical significance was weak, the scores of various physical performance tests and the HRQoL scales were highest in the Highest T among the 3 tertiles. CONCLUSION The present study demonstrated that serum vitamin D level is associated with HGS in patients undergoing HD regardless of muscle mass indices or nutritional status.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis is a fatal disease resulting from motor neuron degeneration in the cortex and spinal cord. Cortical hyperexcitability is a hallmark feature of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and is accompanied by decreased intracortical inhibition. Using electrophysiological patch-clamp recordings, we revealed parvalbumin interneurons to be hypoactive in the late pre-symptomatic SOD1*G93A mouse model of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. We discovered that using adeno-associated virus-mediated delivery of chemogenetic technology targeted to increase the activity of the interneurons within layer 5 of the primary motor cortex, we were able to rescue intracortical inhibition and reduce pyramidal neuron hyperexcitability. Increasing the activity of interneurons in the layer 5 of the primary motor cortex was effective in delaying the onset of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis-associated motor deficits, slowing symptom progression, preserving neuronal populations, and increasing the lifespan of SOD1*G93A mice. Taken together, this study provides novel insights into the pathogenesis and treatment of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

Abstract
The anterior olfactory nucleus (AON) is the initial recipient of odour information from the olfactory bulb, and the target of dense innervation conveying spatiotemporal cues from the hippocampus. We hypothesized that the AON detects the coincidence of these inputs, generating patterns of activity reflective of episodic odour engrams. Using activity-dependent tagging combined with neural manipulation techniques, we reveal that contextually-relevant odour engrams are stored within the AON and that their activity is necessary and sufficient for the behavioural expression of odour memory. Our findings offer a new model for studying the mechanisms underlying memory representations. Odours are powerful stimuli used by most organisms to guide behaviour. Here, the authors identify populations of neurons within the anterior olfactory nucleus (AON) which are necessary and sufficient for the behavioural expression of odour memory.

Abstract
We present a search for subsolar mass ultracompact objects in data obtained during Advanced LIGO's second observing run. In contrast to a previous search of Advanced LIGO data from the first observing run, this search includes the effects of component spin on the gravitational waveform. We identify no viable gravitational-wave candidates consistent with subsolar mass ultracompact binaries with at least one component between 0.2 M_{⊙}-1.0 M_{⊙}. We use the null result to constrain the binary merger rate of (0.2 M_{⊙}, 0.2 M_{⊙}) binaries to be less than 3.7×10^{5} Gpc^{-3} yr^{-1} and the binary merger rate of (1.0 M_{⊙}, 1.0 M_{⊙}) binaries to be less than 5.2×10^{3} Gpc^{-3} yr^{-1}. Subsolar mass ultracompact objects are not expected to form via known stellar evolution channels, though it has been suggested that primordial density fluctuations or particle dark matter with cooling mechanisms and/or nuclear interactions could form black holes with subsolar masses. Assuming a particular primordial black hole (PBH) formation model, we constrain a population of merging 0.2 M_{⊙} black holes to account for less than 16% of the dark matter density and a population of merging 1.0 M_{⊙} black holes to account for less than 2% of the dark matter density. We discuss how constraints on the merger rate and dark matter fraction may be extended to arbitrary black hole population models that predict subsolar mass binaries.

Background
Plakophilin-2 (PKP2) is classically defined as a protein of the desmosome, an intercellular adhesion structure that also acts as a signaling hub to maintain structural and electrical homeostasis. Mutations in PKP2 associate with most cases of gene-positive arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy (ARVC). A better understanding of PKP2 cardiac biology can help elucidate the mechanisms underlying arrhythmic and cardiomyopathic events that occur consequent to its mutation. Here we sought to captureearly molecular/cellular events that can act as nascent substrates for subsequent arrhythmic/cardiomyopathic phenotypes.
Methods
We used multiple quantitative imaging modalities, as well as biochemical and high-resolution mass spectrometry methods to study the functional/structural properties of cells/tissues derived from cardiomyocyte-specific, tamoxifen-activated, PKP2 knockout mice (“PKP2cKO”). Studies were carried out 14 days post-tamoxifen injection, a time point preceding an overt electrical or structural phenotype.Myocytes from right or left ventricular free wall were studied separately, to detect functional/structural asymmetries.
Results
Most properties of PKP2cKO left ventricular (LV) myocytes were not different from control; in contrast, PKP2cKO right ventricular (RV) myocytes showed increased amplitude and duration of Ca2+transients, increased frequency of spontaneous Ca2+release events, increased [Ca2+] in the cytoplasm and sarcoplasmic reticulum compartments, and dynamic Ca2+accumulation in mitochondria. In addition, RyR2 in RV presented enhanced sensitivity to Ca2+and preferential phosphorylation in a domain known to modulate Ca2+gating. RNAseq at 14 days post-TAM showed no relevant difference in transcript abundance between RV and LV, neither in control nor in PKP2cKO cells, suggesting that in the earliest stage, [Ca2+]i dysfunction is not transcriptional. Rather, we found an RV-predominant increase in membrane permeability that can permit Ca2+entry into the cell. Cx43 ablation mitigated the increase in membrane permeability, the accumulation of cytoplasmic Ca2+and the early stages of RV dysfunction.
Conclusions
Loss of PKP2 creates an RV-predominant arrhythmogenic substrate (Ca2+ dysregulation) that precedes the cardiomyopathy and that is, at least in part, mediated by a Cx43-dependent membrane conduit. Given that asymmetric Ca2+ dysregulation precedes the cardiomyopathic stage, we speculate that abnormal Ca2+ handling in RV myocytes can be a trigger for gross structural changes observed at a later stage.

Abstract
The recent discovery by Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo of a gravitational wave signal from a binary neutron star inspiral has enabled tests of general relativity (GR) with this new type of source. This source, for the first time, permits tests of strong-field dynamics of compact binaries in the presence of matter. In this Letter, we place constraints on the dipole radiation and possible deviations from GR in the post-Newtonian coefficients that govern the inspiral regime. Bounds on modified dispersion of gravitational waves are obtained; in combination with information from the observed electromagnetic counterpart we can also constrain effects due to large extra dimensions. Finally, the polarization content of the gravitational wave signal is studied. The results of all tests performed here show good agreement with GR.

Abstract
We analyze the impact of a proposed tidal instability coupling p modes and g modes within neutron stars on GW170817. This nonresonant instability transfers energy from the orbit of the binary to internal modes of the stars, accelerating the gravitational-wave driven inspiral. We model the impact of this instability on the phasing of the gravitational wave signal using three parameters per star: an overall amplitude, a saturation frequency, and a spectral index. Incorporating these additional parameters, we compute the Bayes factor (lnB_{!pg}^{pg}) comparing our p-g model to a standard one. We find that the observed signal is consistent with waveform models that neglect p-g effects, with lnB_{!pg}^{pg}=0.03_{-0.58}^{+0.70} (maximum a posteriori and 90% credible region). By injecting simulated signals that do not include p-g effects and recovering them with the p-g model, we show that there is a ≃50% probability of obtaining similar lnB_{!pg}^{pg} even when p-g effects are absent. We find that the p-g amplitude for 1.4 M_{⊙} neutron stars is constrained to less than a few tenths of the theoretical maximum, with maxima a posteriori near one-tenth this maximum and p-g saturation frequency ∼70 Hz. This suggests that there are less than a few hundred excited modes, assuming they all saturate by wave breaking. For comparison, theoretical upper bounds suggest ≲10^{3} modes saturate by wave breaking. Thus, the measured constraints only rule out extreme values of the p-g parameters. They also imply that the instability dissipates ≲10^{51} erg over the entire inspiral, i.e., less than a few percent of the energy radiated as gravitational waves.

Abstract
The formation of social relationships via social interactions and memory are essential for one's physical and mental health. To date, rodent studies have used the three-chamber social approach test to measure social approach, social novelty, and social memory. In recent years, techniques including optogenetics have been developed to acutely control the activity of genetically defined populations of neurons. Recent studies have even combined optogenetics with advanced temporal gene expression control systems to label certain populations of neurons during learning and subsequently reactivated for memory testing. We combined optogenetic targeting with the three-chamber social approach test to examine particular neural circuits of interest during social memory encoding or retrieval. First, we stereotaxically infected specific brain areas with viral-encoding opsins that acutely activate or inhibit the firing of the neurons. Next, we subjected the mice to the three-chamber behavioral paradigm while delivering light during social memory encoding or retrieval. Lastly, the mice were tested with the delivery of light in a counter-balanced manner which allows each subject to be its own internal control. Thus, the optogenetic stimulation coupled with the three-chamber social approach test is a well-validated paradigm to explore the contribution of diverse brain circuits in various social cognition processes.

Abstract
We present the first Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo search for ultracompact binary systems with component masses between 0.2 M_{⊙}-1.0 M_{⊙} using data taken between September 12, 2015 and January 19, 2016. We find no viable gravitational wave candidates. Our null result constrains the coalescence rate of monochromatic (delta function) distributions of nonspinning (0.2 M_{⊙}, 0.2 M_{⊙}) ultracompact binaries to be less than 1.0×10^{6} Gpc^{-3} yr^{-1} and the coalescence rate of a similar distribution of (1.0 M_{⊙}, 1.0 M_{⊙}) ultracompact binaries to be less than 1.9×10^{4} Gpc^{-3} yr^{-1} (at 90% confidence). Neither black holes nor neutron stars are expected to form below ∼1 M_{⊙} through conventional stellar evolution, though it has been proposed that similarly low mass black holes could be formed primordially through density fluctuations in the early Universe and contribute to the dark matter density. The interpretation of our constraints in the primordial black hole dark matter paradigm is highly model dependent; however, under a particular primordial black hole binary formation scenario we constrain monochromatic primordial black hole populations of 0.2 M_{⊙} to be less than 33% of the total dark matter density and monochromatic populations of 1.0 M_{⊙} to be less than 5% of the dark matter density. The latter strengthens the presently placed bounds from microlensing surveys of massive compact halo objects (MACHOs) provided by the MACHO and EROS Collaborations.

Abstract
On 17 August 2017, the LIGO and Virgo observatories made the first direct detection of gravitational waves from the coalescence of a neutron star binary system. The detection of this gravitational-wave signal, GW170817, offers a novel opportunity to directly probe the properties of matter at the extreme conditions found in the interior of these stars. The initial, minimal-assumption analysis of the LIGO and Virgo data placed constraints on the tidal effects of the coalescing bodies, which were then translated to constraints on neutron star radii. Here, we expand upon previous analyses by working under the hypothesis that both bodies were neutron stars that are described by the same equation of state and have spins within the range observed in Galactic binary neutron stars. Our analysis employs two methods: the use of equation-of-state-insensitive relations between various macroscopic properties of the neutron stars and the use of an efficient parametrization of the defining function p(ρ) of the equation of state itself. From the LIGO and Virgo data alone and the first method, we measure the two neutron star radii as R_{1}=10.8_{-1.7}^{+2.0} km for the heavier star and R_{2}=10.7_{-1.5}^{+2.1} km for the lighter star at the 90% credible level. If we additionally require that the equation of state supports neutron stars with masses larger than 1.97 M_{⊙} as required from electromagnetic observations and employ the equation-of-state parametrization, we further constrain R_{1}=11.9_{-1.4}^{+1.4} km and R_{2}=11.9_{-1.4}^{+1.4} km at the 90% credible level. Finally, we obtain constraints on p(ρ) at supranuclear densities, with pressure at twice nuclear saturation density measured at 3.5_{-1.7}^{+2.7}×10^{34} dyn cm^{-2} at the 90% level.

Abstract
Behavioural tests based on the spontaneous recognition paradigm have been used extensively for examining the memory capacity of rodents. By exploiting their innate preference to investigate novel stimuli, inferences can be drawn about the perceived familiarity of encountered objects. Olfaction is the dominant sense used by mice to navigate their environment, yet these tests are often conducted using visual objects. By employing odors, one can reduce the high level of variability commonly observed between subjects. In this paper, we describe a protocol for assessing context-dependent odor memory by probing spatial and temporal associations separately or in conjunction with each other. We also detail a context-independent novel odor recognition protocol. These tests offer a simple and effective method for measuring odor memory in rodents using cheap and easily obtained materials.

Abstract
This study presents the investigation of superconducting joints fabricated using multifilament magnesium diboride (MgB2) wires for the development of persistent-current mode magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) magnets. The critical current of the jointed samples decreased with increasing cutting angle because the smaller cutting angle allowed greater exposure of the MgB2 filament, thereby increasing the contact area for the wire-bulk-wire connection. In addition, an appropriate pressing pressure (300 MPa) was necessary to establish the multifilament MgB2 joint without significant degradation of superconducting properties. The resistance of the optimal MgB2 joint, measured using the field-decay technique, was <1.5 × 10-14 Ω. Therefore, the proposed joint technique can be employed for developing multifilament MgB2 MRI magnets operating in the persistent-current mode.

Abstract
The hippocampus is essential for representing spatiotemporal context and establishing its association with the sensory details of daily life to form episodic memories. The olfactory cortex in particular shares exclusive anatomical connections with the hippocampus as a result of their common evolutionary history. Here we selectively inhibit hippocampal projections to the anterior olfactory nucleus (AON) during behavioural tests of contextually cued odour recall. We find that spatial odour memory and temporal odour memory are independently impaired following inhibition of distinct, topographically organized hippocampal-AON pathways. Our results not only reveal a longstanding unknown function for the AON but offer new mechanistic insights regarding the representation of odours in episodic memory.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Evidence to support the specific use of magnetic resonance tumour regression grade (mrTRG) is inadequate. The aim of this study was to investigate the pathological characteristics of mrTRG after chemoradiotherapy (CRT) for rectal cancer and the implications for surgery. METHODS Patients undergoing long-course CRT (45-50 Gy plus a booster dose of 4-6 Gy) for mid or low rectal cancer (cT3-4 or cN+ without metastasis) between 2011 and 2015 who had post-CRT rectal MRI before surgery were included retrospectively. Three board-certified experienced radiologists assessed mrTRG. mrTRG was correlated with pathological tumour regression grade (pTRG), ypT and ypN. In a subgroup of patients with mrTRG1-2 and no tumour spread (such as nodal metastasis) on MRI, the projected rate of completion total mesorectal excision (TME) if they underwent transanal excision (TAE) and had a ypT status of ypT2 or higher was estimated, and recurrence-free survival was calculated according to the operation (TME or TAE) that patients had actually received. RESULTS Some 439 patients (290 men and 149 women of mean(s.d.) age 62·2(11·4) years) were analysed. The accuracy of mrTRG1 for predicting pTRG1 was 61 per cent (40 of 66), and that for ypT1 or less was 74 per cent (49 of 66). For mrTRG2, these values were 22·3 per cent (25 of 112) and 36·6 per cent (41 of 112) respectively. Patients with mrTRG1 and mrTRG2 without tumour spread were ypN+ in 3 per cent (1 of 29) and 16 per cent (8 of 50) respectively. Assuming mrTRG1 or mrTRG1-2 with no tumour spread on post-CRT MRI as the criteria for TAE, the projected completion TME rate was 26 per cent (11 of 43) and 41·0 per cent (41 of 100) respectively. For the 100 patients with mrTRG1-2 and no tumour spread, recurrence-free survival did not differ significantly between TME (79 patients) and TAE (21) (adjusted hazard ratio 1·86, 95 per cent c.i. 0·42 to 8·18). CONCLUSION Patients with mrTRG1 without tumour spread may be suitable for TAE.

Abstract
The detection of gravitational waves with Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo has enabled novel tests of general relativity, including direct study of the polarization of gravitational waves. While general relativity allows for only two tensor gravitational-wave polarizations, general metric theories can additionally predict two vector and two scalar polarizations. The polarization of gravitational waves is encoded in the spectral shape of the stochastic gravitational-wave background, formed by the superposition of cosmological and individually unresolved astrophysical sources. Using data recorded by Advanced LIGO during its first observing run, we search for a stochastic background of generically polarized gravitational waves. We find no evidence for a background of any polarization, and place the first direct bounds on the contributions of vector and scalar polarizations to the stochastic background. Under log-uniform priors for the energy in each polarization, we limit the energy densities of tensor, vector, and scalar modes at 95% credibility to Ω_{0}^{T}<5.58×10^{-8}, Ω_{0}^{V}<6.35×10^{-8}, and Ω_{0}^{S}<1.08×10^{-7} at a reference frequency f_{0}=25 Hz.
