Poor working conditions and work stress among Canadian sex workers

Background

While sex work is often considered the world's oldest profession, there remains a dearth of research on work stress among sex workers (SWs) in occupational health epidemiological literature. A better understanding of the drivers of work stress among SWs is needed to inform sex work policy, workplace models and standards.

Aims

To examine the factors that influence work stress among SWs in Metro Vancouver.

Methods

Analyses drew from a longitudinal cohort of SWs, known as An Evaluation of Sex Workers' Health Access (AESHA) (2010-14). A modified standardized 'work stress' scale, multivariable linear regression with generalized estimating equations was used to longitudinally examine the factors associated with work stress.

Results

In multivariable analysis, poor working conditions were associated with increased work stress and included workplace physical/sexual violence (β = 0.18; 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.06, 0.29), displacement due to police (β = 0.26; 95% CI 0.14, 0.38), working in public spaces (β = 0.73; 95% CI 0.61, 0.84). Older (β = -0.02; 95% CI -0.03, -0.01) and Indigenous SWs experienced lower work stress (β = -0.25; 95% CI -0.43, -0.08), whereas non-injection (β = 0.32; 95% CI 0.14, 0.49) and injection drug users (β = 0.17; 95% CI 0.03, 0.31) had higher work stress.

Conclusions

Vancouver-based SWs' work stress was largely shaped by poor work conditions, such as violence, policing, lack of safe workspaces. There is a need to move away from criminalized approaches which shape unsafe work conditions and increase work stress for SWs. Policies that promote SWs' access to the same occupational health, safety and human rights standards as workers in other labour sectors are also needed.

Inhibitory effect of divalent metal cations on zinc uptake via mouse Zrt-/Irt-like protein 8 (ZIP8)

AIMS

There is controversy regarding the substrate specificity of ZIP8, a ZIP isoform, involved in regulation of extra- and intracellular zinc levels. Here, we investigated the inhibitory effects of divalent metal cations on zinc uptake via mouse ZIP8 (mZIP8).

MAIN METHODS

mZIP8 cDNA was transfected into HEK293T cells by a lipofection method, and its functional expression was evaluated by immunocytochemistry, Western blotting and ⁶⁵Zn (⁶⁵ZnCl₂) uptake measurement.

KEY FINDINGS

Transfection of mZIP8 cDNA into HEK293T cells induced expression of mZIP8 in the cells, and increased zinc uptake. mZIP8-mediated zinc uptake depended on extracellular bicarbonate, and the Michaelis constant for the uptake was estimated to be 8.48±2.46μM. In the inhibition study, iron and cadmium competitively, and cobalt, nickel and copper non-competitively inhibited the mZIP8-mediated zinc uptake, the inhibition constants being calculated to be 3.37, 55.5, 80.6, 198 and 48.3μM, respectively. In contrast, magnesium and manganese at concentrations of up to 1500 and 200μM, respectively, had no inhibitory effect on the zinc uptake via mZIP8.

SIGNIFICANCE

In this study, we reveal that the inhibition profiles of divalent metal cations as to zinc uptake via mZIP8 apparently differ from those for mZIP1, especially in the affinity and inhibition manner of nickel. These findings should contribute to identification of ZIP isoforms involved in total cellular zinc transport.

[Treatment strategy and outcomes of invading apical lung cancer]

Invading apical lung cancers are generally the non-small-cell lung cancers (NSCLCs) which involve the apex of the chest wall. These tumors should be classified into 2 types based on the main location of tumor because of the difference of involved surrounding structures ; (1) the superior sulcus tumor origi nally termed Pancoast tumor which involves posterior region of the apex and (2) the anterior apical tumor which involves anterior region of the apex. Previously, these NSCLCs were considered to be inoperable showing a dismal prognosis. With the development of combined modality therapies for locally advanced NSCLCs, the prognosis of invading apical NSCLCs has been improved, especially since intro duction of the neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy. Surgical resection for invading apical NSCLCs is 1 of challenging procedures for thoracic surgeons. The point is the anatomical complication of the small apex surrounding vital structures. Several approaches have been developed such as the posterior Paul-son's approach or anterior Masaoka's approach. In particular, the approach from anterior chest has been modified or devised to achieve safe and complete resection of tumors invading anterior structures like subclavian vessels. In this article, we reviewed our 13 cases of invading apical NSCLCs, especially from the view point of surgical approach. Thoracic surgeons should understand the properties of each approach and master them for complete resection avoiding serious complications.

[Effect of UFT by oral administration using a murine hepatic metastasis model]

We examined the antitumor effect of UFT, a 5-FU derivative using a hepatic metastasis model in mice. BALB/c and CDF1 mice were given orally UFT (30 mg/kg, 50 mg/kg daily or 120 mg/kg every other day) for 20 days after inoculation of colon-26 tumor cells into the portal vein. The number of metastatic nodules and the weight of the liver decreased significantly in all groups of UFT treatment. The therapeutic effect with 50 mg/kg UFT was better than those with the other doses. NK and LAK activities of spleen cells obtained from UFT-treated tumor bearing mice were not significantly different from the untreated control. IL-1 and IL-2 production of the spleen cells were also not significantly changed by the treatment with UFT. These results suggested that the oral administration of UFT represents an antitumor effect against hepatic metastasis in mice without sever suppression of the host immune system.
