Adaptive Capon beamforming for lensless electron cyclotron emission imaging with high spatial resolution

Electron cyclotron emission (ECE) imaging diagnostics incorporating a lensless approach have been developed for measurements involving active spatial selectivity and direction-of-arrival estimation. The Capon method for adaptive-array analysis was proposed to improve the spatial resolution of the two-dimensional ECE imaging technique. Broadband noise source emissions were used to simulate the ECE to verify the practical effectiveness of the Capon method in the ECE imaging. Multiple noise source emission positions were properly estimated with a high spatial resolution using the Capon method.

Continuing perioperative estrogen therapy does not increase venous thromboembolic events in transgender patients: a systematic review and meta-analysis

OBJECTIVE

The aim of this study is to compare the risk of venous thromboembolic events (VTE) between patients suspending and continuing estrogen therapy perioperatively, in male to female gender-affirming surgery (vaginoplasty).

MATERIALS AND METHODS

The authors conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of existing research on male to female gender-affirming study, which compared the risk of VTE among the usage of estrogen perioperatively.

RESULTS

A total of 209 studies were identified as potentially eligible among PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane library databases. Among the studies, 191 studies were excluded due to their abstract inappropriateness. Out of the remaining 18 studies, only 3 articles were eligible and were finally included. Meta-analysis was performed and showed odds ratio of 0.77 (95% CI: 0.04, 14.01).

CONCLUSIONS

Perioperative estrogen therapy does not increase VTE risk on male to female gender-affirming surgery. Therefore, estrogen therapy may be continued perioperatively in vaginoplasty. More prospective studies are needed.

Correlation of Preoperative 'HRCT Temporal Bone' Findings with 'Surgical Findings' in Unsafe CSOM

To assesses the usefulness of a preoperative HRCT temporal bone and establish HRCT as an efficacious tool for diagnosis of the extent and involvement of adjacent structures by Cholesteatoma. The study group includes 52 patients with Unsafe CSOM (atticoantral), who presented to the ENT OPD at a tertiary care centre in Central India over a period of 18 months, who underwent HRCT temporal bone followed by surgical exploration of middle ear and or mastoid, for the removal of Cholesteatoma. From the observation and results obtained from this study, we can conclude that the HRCT can be used as a standard radiological imaging modality for the evaluation of temporal Bone pathology. Despite its pitfalls such as more radiation exposure and higher cost, delineates the location and extent of the disease and provides critical information regarding anatomical variations and complications. It serves as a roadmap to assist the surgeon during surgery.

P5540Familial clustering of spontaneous coronary artery dissection

Background

There is increasing evidence that patients with spontaneous coronary artery dissection (SCAD) have an underlying genetic susceptibility (Goel et al JAMA Intern Med175:821–826, 2015). Moreover, in a collaborative study involving 1,055 SCAD cases and 7,190 controls, we recently reported the first risk allele for SCAD, a variant (rs9349379-A) in the PHACTR1/EDN1 genetic locus (Adlam et al J Amer Coll Cardiol73:58–66, 2019).

Purpose

We sought to determine the clinical characteristics and initial genetic data for 11 families, in which more than one member has had an episode of SCAD.

Methods

Participants were recruited largely via a social media platform. Informed consent was obtained in all cases for analysis of genetic information using whole genome sequencing, as well as collection of clinical information. SCAD was confirmed by review of coronary angiogram images and clinical data collected by phone interview, as well as review of specialist letters and hospital records.

Results

Of 235 participants recruited to date, 23 cases showed familial clustering involving sister-sister pairs in six families, three first-degree cousins in one family (picture), two first-degree cousins in two families, a mother-son pair, and a family with concordant monozygotic twins, that is both twins having had SCAD. In an additional family, SCAD is discordant in monozygotic twins. A comparison of symptoms, age at SCAD, clinical syndrome, cardiovascular risk factors, SCAD risk factors, environmental triggers, SCAD location, acute management, left ventricular function and recurrent SCAD events in these families versus isolated cases, will be presented. Three sister-sister pairs have undergone whole genome sequencing and these data sets are undergoing segregation analysis to identify rare variants that are present exclusively in affected family members.

Conclusions

To our knowledge, this is the largest assembly of SCAD cases with familial clustering reported to date. It provides strong evidence supporting an underlying genetic basis for SCAD, which most likely is a multi-genic disorder that also involves important gene-environment interactions.

Design and wavefront characterization of an electrically tunable aspherical optofluidic lens

We present a novel design of an exclusively electrically controlled adaptive optofluidic lens that allows for manipulating both focal length and asphericity. The device is totally encapsulated and contains an aqueous lens with a clear aperture of 2mm immersed in ambient oil. The design is based on the combination of an electrowetting-driven pressure regulation to control the average curvature of the lens and a Maxwell stress-based correction of the local curvature to control spherical aberration. The performance of the lens is evaluated by a dedicated setup for the characterization of optical wavefronts using a Shack Hartmann Wavefront Sensor. The focal length of the device can be varied between 10 and 27mm. At the same time, the Zernike coefficient Z40, characterising spherical aberration, can be tuned reversibly between 0.059waves and 0.003waves at a wavelength of λ=532nm. Several possible extensions and applications of the device are discussed.

Investigation of Upconversion, downshifting and quantum -cutting behavior of Eu3+, Yb3+, Bi3+ co-doped LaNbO4 phosphor as a spectral conversion material

This work presents the spectral conversion characteristics [upconversion (UC), downshifting (DS) and quantum-cutting (QC) optical processes] of Eu³⁺, Yb³⁺ and Bi³⁺ co-doped LaNbO₄ (LBO) phosphor samples synthesized by solid state reaction technique. The crystal structure and the pure phase formation have been confirmed by x-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements. The surface morphology and particle size are studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The rarely observed intense red UC emission from Eu³⁺ ion has been successfully obtained in Eu³⁺/Yb³⁺ co-doped LaNbO₄ phosphor (on excitation with 980 nm) by optimizing the concentrations of Eu³⁺ and Yb³⁺ ions. The downshifting (DS) behavior has been studied by photoluminescence (PL) measurements on excitation with 265 nm wavelength from a Xe lamp source. A broad blue emission in the region 300-550 nm with its maximum ∼415 nm due to charge transfer band (CTB) of the host and large number of sharp peaks due to f-f transitions of Eu³⁺ ion have been observed. The energy transfer has been observed from (NbO₄)^3- to Eu³⁺ ion and the fluorescence emission has been optimized by varying the concentration of Eu³⁺ ion. An intense red emission has also been observed corresponding to ⁵D₀ → ⁷F₂ transition of Eu³⁺ ion at 611 nm in LBO: 0.09Eu³⁺ phosphor on excitation with 394 nm. The luminescence properties of Eu³⁺ ion are enhanced further through the sensitization effect of Bi³⁺ ion. The near infra-red (NIR) quantum cutting (QC) behavior due to Yb³⁺ ion has been monitored on excitation with 265 as well as 394 nm. The NIR QC is observed due to ²F_5/2 → ²F_7/2 transition of Yb³⁺ ion via co-operative energy transfer (CET) process from (NbO₄)^3- as well as Eu³⁺ ions to Yb³⁺ ion. This multimodal behavior (UC, DS and QC) makes this a promising phosphor material for multi-purpose spectral converter.

Aberration control in adaptive optics: a numerical study of arbitrarily deformable liquid lenses

By means of numerical simulations, using a computational fluid dynamics software together with an optical ray tracing analysis platform, we show that we can tune various optical aberrations by electrically manipulating the shape of liquid lenses using one hundred individually addressable electrodes. To demonstrate the flexibility of our design, we define electrode patterns based on specific Zernike modes and show that aspherical, cylindrical and decentered shapes of liquid lenses can be produced. Using different voltages, we evaluate the tuning range of spherical aberration (Z11), astigmatism (Z5 and Z6) and coma (Z7), while a hydrostatic pressure is applied to control the average curvature of a microlens with a diameter of 1mm. Upon activating all electrodes simultaneously spherical aberrations of 0.15 waves at a pressure of 30Pa can be suppressed almost completely for the highest voltages applied. For astigmatic and comatic patterns, the values of Z5, Z6 and Z7 increase monotonically with the voltage reaching values up to 0.06, 0.06 and 0.2 waves, respectively. Spot diagrams, wavefront maps and modulation transfer function are reported to quantify the optical performance of each lens. Crosstalk and independence of tunability are discussed in the context of possible applications of the approach for general wavefront shaping.

Measurements of the [Formula: see text] production cross section in lepton+jets final states in pp collisions at 8 [Formula: see text] and ratio of 8 to 7 [Formula: see text] cross sections

A measurement of the top quark pair production ([Formula: see text]) cross section in proton-proton collisions at the centre-of-mass energy of 8[Formula: see text] is presented using data collected with the CMS detector at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.6[Formula: see text]. This analysis is performed in the [Formula: see text] decay channels with one isolated, high transverse momentum electron or muon and at least four jets, at least one of which is required to be identified as originating from hadronization of a b quark. The calibration of the jet energy scale and the efficiency of b jet identification are determined from data. The measured [Formula: see text] cross section is [Formula: see text]. This measurement is compared with an analysis of 7[Formula: see text] data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.0[Formula: see text], to determine the ratio of 8[Formula: see text] to 7[Formula: see text] cross sections, which is found to be [Formula: see text]. The measurements are in agreement with QCD predictions up to next-to-next-to-leading order.

Search for direct pair production of supersymmetric top quarks decaying to all-hadronic final states in pp collisions at [Formula: see text]

Results are reported from a search for the pair production of top squarks, the supersymmetric partners of top quarks, in final states with jets and missing transverse momentum. The data sample used in this search was collected by the CMS detector and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 18.9[Formula: see text] of proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 8[Formula: see text] produced by the LHC. The search features novel background suppression and prediction methods, including a dedicated top quark pair reconstruction algorithm. The data are found to be in agreement with the predicted backgrounds. Exclusion limits are set in simplified supersymmetry models with the top squark decaying to jets and an undetected neutralino, either through a top quark or through a bottom quark and chargino. Models with the top squark decaying via a top quark are excluded for top squark masses up to 755[Formula: see text] in the case of neutralino masses below 200[Formula: see text]. For decays via a chargino, top squark masses up to 620[Formula: see text] are excluded, depending on the masses of the chargino and neutralino.

Measurement of the [Formula: see text] cross section in pp collisions at [Formula: see text] TeVand limits on anomalous gauge couplings

A measurement of the W boson pair production cross section in proton-proton collisions at [Formula: see text] TeV is presented. The data collected with the CMS detector at the LHC correspond to an integrated luminosity of 19.4[Formula: see text]. The [Formula: see text] candidates are selected from events with two charged leptons, electrons or muons, and large missing transverse energy. The measured [Formula: see text] cross section is [Formula: see text], consistent with the standard model prediction. The [Formula: see text] cross sections are also measured in two different fiducial phase space regions. The normalized differential cross section is measured as a function of kinematic variables of the final-state charged leptons and compared with several perturbative QCD predictions. Limits on anomalous gauge couplings associated with dimension-six operators are also given in the framework of an effective field theory. The corresponding 95 % confidence level intervals are [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text], in the HISZ basis.

Measurement of [Formula: see text] production with additional jet activity, including [Formula: see text] quark jets, in the dilepton decay channel using pp collisions at [Formula: see text]

Jet multiplicity distributions in top quark pair ([Formula: see text]) events are measured in pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV with the CMS detector at the LHC using a data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.7[Formula: see text]. The measurement is performed in the dilepton decay channels ([Formula: see text], [Formula: see text], and [Formula: see text]). The absolute and normalized differential cross sections for [Formula: see text] production are measured as a function of the jet multiplicity in the event for different jet transverse momentum thresholds and the kinematic properties of the leading additional jets. The differential [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] cross sections are presented for the first time as a function of the kinematic properties of the leading additional [Formula: see text] jets. Furthermore, the fraction of events without additional jets above a threshold is measured as a function of the transverse momenta of the leading additional jets and the scalar sum of the transverse momenta of all additional jets. The data are compared and found to be consistent with predictions from several perturbative quantum chromodynamics event generators and a next-to-leading order calculation.

Numerical analysis of electrically tunable aspherical optofluidic lenses

In this work, we use the numerical simulation platform Zemax to investigate the optical properties of electrically tunable aspherical liquid lenses, as we recently reported in an experimental study [<author order="1"> <name> <first>K.</first> <last>Mishra</last> </name> </author> <author order="2"> <name> <first>C.</first> <last>Murade</last> </name> </author> <author order="3"> <name> <first>B.</first> <last>Carreel</last> </name> </author> <author order="4"> <name> <first>I.</first> <last>Roghair</last> </name> </author> <author order="5"> <name> <first>J. M.</first> <last>Oh</last> </name> </author> <author order="6"> <name> <first>G.</first> <last>Manukyan</last> </name> </author> <author order="7"> <name> <first>D.</first> <last>van den Ende</last> </name> </author> <author order="8"> <name> <first>F.</first> <last>Mugele</last> </name> </author>, "Optofluidic lens with tunable focal length and asphericity," Sci. Rep.4, 6378 (2014)]. Based on the measured lens profiles in the presence of an inhomogeneous electric field and the geometry of the optical device, we calculate the optical aberrations, focusing in particular on the Z11 Zernike coefficient of spherical aberration obtained at zero defocus (Z4). Focal length and spherical aberrations are calculated for a wide range of control parameters (fluid pressure and electric field), parallel with the experimental results. Similarly, the modulation transfer function (MTF), image spot diagrams, Strehl's ratio, and peak-to-valley (P-V) and root mean square (RMS) wavefront errors are calculated to quantify the performance of our aspherical liquid lenses. We demonstrate that the device concept allows compensation for a wide range of spherical aberrations encountered in optical systems.

Forward-backward asymmetry of Drell-Yan lepton pairs in pp collisions at [Formula: see text][Formula: see text]

A measurement of the forward-backward asymmetry [Formula: see text] of oppositely charged lepton pairs ([Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text]) produced via [Formula: see text] boson exchange in pp collisions at [Formula: see text] [Formula: see text] is presented. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 19.7[Formula: see text] collected with the CMS detector at the LHC. The measurement of [Formula: see text] is performed for dilepton masses between 40[Formula: see text] and 2[Formula: see text] and for dilepton rapidity up to 5. The [Formula: see text] measurements as a function of dilepton mass and rapidity are compared with the standard model predictions.

Recent Developments in Optofluidic Lens Technology

Optofluidics is a rapidly growing versatile branch of adaptive optics including a wide variety of applications such as tunable beam shaping tools, mirrors, apertures, and lenses. In this review, we focus on recent developments in optofluidic lenses, which arguably forms the most important part of optofluidics devices. We report first on a number of general characteristics and characterization methods for optofluidics lenses and their optical performance, including aberrations and their description in terms of Zernike polynomials. Subsequently, we discuss examples of actuation methods separately for spherical optofluidic lenses and for more recent tunable aspherical lenses. Advantages and disadvantages of various actuation schemes are presented, focusing in particular on electrowetting-driven lenses and pressure-driven liquid lenses that are covered by elastomeric sheets. We discuss in particular the opportunities for detailed aberration control by using either finely controlled electric fields or specifically designed elastomeric lenses.

Search for massive WH resonances decaying into the [Formula: see text] final state at [Formula: see text][Formula: see text]

A search for a massive resonance [Formula: see text]decaying into a W and a Higgs boson in the [Formula: see text] ([Formula: see text], [Formula: see text]) final state is presented. Results are based on data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.7[Formula: see text] of proton-proton collisions at [Formula: see text] [Formula: see text], collected using the CMS detector at the LHC. For a high-mass ([Formula: see text]1[Formula: see text]) resonance, the two bottom quarks coming from the Higgs boson decay are reconstructed as a single jet, which can be tagged by placing requirements on its substructure and flavour. Exclusion limits at 95 % confidence level are set on the production cross section of a narrow resonance decaying into WH, as a function of its mass. In the context of a little Higgs model, a lower limit on the [Formula: see text] mass of 1.4[Formula: see text] is set. In a heavy vector triplet model that mimics the properties of composite Higgs models, a lower limit on the [Formula: see text] mass of 1.5[Formula: see text] is set. In the context of this model, the results are combined with related searches to obtain a lower limit on the [Formula: see text] mass of 1.8[Formula: see text], the most restrictive to date for decays to a pair of standard model bosons.

Measurement of the [Formula: see text] production cross section in the all-jets final state in pp collisions at [Formula: see text][Formula: see text]

The cross section for [Formula: see text] production in the all-jets final state is measured in pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 [Formula: see text] at the LHC with the CMS detector, in data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 18.4 [Formula: see text]. The inclusive cross section is found to be [Formula: see text] [Formula: see text]. The normalized differential cross sections are measured as a function of the top quark transverse momenta, [Formula: see text], and compared to predictions from quantum chromodynamics. The results are reported at detector, parton, and particle levels. In all cases, the measured top quark [Formula: see text] spectra are significantly softer than theoretical predictions.

Numerical simulation of astigmatic liquid lenses tuned by a stripe electrode

We propose a new design for tuning the astigmatism of liquid micro-lenses using electric field and hydrostatic pressure as control parameters. We explore the feasibility and operating range of the lens with a self-consistent numerical calculation of the electric field distribution and the shape of the two-phase interface. Equilibrium shapes, including surface profiles parallel and perpendicular to a stripe electrode, are extracted to determine the astigmatism. The wavefronts are decomposed into Zernike polynomials under zero defocus conditions using a commercial ray-tracing software. We observe that the global curvature of the lens is primarily controlled by the hydrostatic pressure, while asphericity and astigmatism are controlled by the electric field. For optimized electrode geometries and simultaneous control of pressure and electric fields the astigmatism can be tuned from Z6 = 0…0.38 μm with minor changes in the focal length.

Measurement of the Top Quark Pair Production Cross Section in Proton-Proton Collisions at √[s]=13 TeV

The top quark pair production cross section is measured for the first time in proton-proton collisions at sqrt[s]=13  TeV by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC, using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 43  pb^{-1}. The measurement is performed by analyzing events with at least one electron and one muon of opposite charge, and at least two jets. The measured cross section is 746±58(stat)±53(syst)±36(lumi)  pb, in agreement with the expectation from the standard model.

Study of B Meson Production in p+Pb Collisions at √[S(NN)]=5.02 TeV Using Exclusive Hadronic Decays

The production cross sections of the B^{+}, B^{0}, and B_{s}^{0} mesons, and of their charge conjugates, are measured via exclusive hadronic decays in p+Pb collisions at the center-of-mass energy sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02  TeV with the CMS detector at the CERN LHC. The data set used for this analysis corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 34.6  nb^{-1}. The production cross sections are measured in the transverse momentum range between 10 and 60  GeV/c. No significant modification is observed compared to proton-proton perturbative QCD calculations scaled by the number of incoherent nucleon-nucleon collisions. These results provide a baseline for the study of in-medium b quark energy loss in Pb+Pb collisions.
