A Mixed Methods Approach to Equity and Justice Research: Insights from Research on Children's Reasoning About Economic Inequality

Mixed methods research approaches are gaining traction across various social science disciplines, including among developmental scientists. In this chapter, we discuss the utility of a mixed methods research approach in examining issues related to equity and justice. We incorporate a brief overview of quantitative and qualitative monomethod research approaches in our larger discussion of the advantages, procedures, and considerations of employing a mixed methods design to advance developmental science from an equity and justice perspective. To better illustrate the theoretical and practical significance of a mixed methods research approach, we include examples of research conducted on children and adolescents' conceptions of economic inequality as one example of developmental science research with an equity and justice frame.

Sacral nerve stimulation increases activation of the primary somatosensory cortex by anal canal stimulation in an experimental model

BACKGROUND

Sacral and posterior tibial nerve stimulation may be used to treat faecal incontinence; however, the mechanism of action is unknown. The aim of this study was to establish whether sensory activation of the cerebral cortex by anal canal stimulation was increased by peripheral neuromodulation.

METHODS

A multielectrode array was positioned over the right primary somatosensory cortex of anaesthetized rats. A brief burst of electrical stimulation was applied to either the left sacral root or the left posterior tibial nerve, and evoked potentials from anal canal stimulation were signal-averaged at intervals over 1 h. At the end of the experiment, the cerebral cortex was removed and probed for polysialylated neural cell adhesion molecule (PSA-NCAM).

RESULTS

Sacral nerve root and posterior tibial nerve stimulation significantly increased the peak amplitude of primary cortical evoked potentials by 54.0 and 45.1 per cent respectively. This change persisted throughout the period of observation. The density of PSA-NCAM-positive cells in the somatosensory cortex underlying the electrode array was increased by approximately 50 per cent in the sacral nerve-stimulated group.

CONCLUSION

Brief sacral neuromodulation induces profound changes in anal canal representation on the primary somatosensory cortex, providing a plausible hypothesis concerning the mechanism of action of neuromodulation in the treatment of faecal incontinence.

Rehabilitation of the hip

The evolution of hip arthroscopy has necessitated a progression in hip rehabilitation to insure optimal postsurgical results. Rehabilitative methodology and techniques commonly employed after minimally invasive surgical techniques for other joints, such as the knee, shoulder, elbow, and ankle, have found application in the management of hip disorders. Understanding and respecting basic principles is always key to maintaining successful outcomes with any technique.

Usefulness of assessment techniques in assessing classification for emotional disturbance and generating classroom recommendations

A national survey of specialist school psychologists examined the perceived usefulness of assessment techniques in making decisions regarding eligibility for the educational classification of emotional disturbance and in generating classroom recommendations. Analysis showed measures rated as most useful were interviews with the parent, teacher, and student, observations of the student, and norm-referenced rating scales. Projective techniques were least useful. These findings are important in the context of "best practices" for the multidimensional assessment of emotional disturbance which promotes a more direct link between assessment and intervention.

Evolution of transitional care settings: past, present, future

Transitional care settings have evolved since the 1980s as Medicare prospective payment has affected acute hospital reimbursement and hospital length of stay. These settings include hospital-based subacute units, typically called transitional care units; subacute care units in freestanding nursing facilities; and long-term care hospitals. This article focuses on these transitional care settings: what they are, how they developed, what reimbursement issues affect these settings, and what is likely to happen next. In the future, advanced practice nurses may not only refer patients to transitional care settings, but also may find them to be sites for practice.
