Abstract
Air pollution is a pervasive global environmental challenge that presents substantial and differential risk across populations. Individual-level pollution exposure is a function of varying factors, including but not limited to geographic location, proximity to point sources, ventilation, and behavioral patterns. Mounting evidence suggests that informational interventions can play a substantial role in mediating exposures for specific population subgroups and reduce downstream adverse health outcomes. The literature has yet to address whether access to air quality information is sociodemographically stratified, and whether such access correlates with increased uptake of exposure reducing behaviors at the population level. This study represents a first step in answering these questions by analysing responses from the "Clean Air Public Insight Tracker" nationally representative survey (n = 1,993) of the UK population, administered by UK charity Global Action Plan. Results from logistic regression and zero-inflated negative binomial models estimate 28% of the population have accessed air pollution information, while the odds of younger individuals (ages 18-36), men, and non-white individuals of accessing digitally available air quality information are greater that those outside these categories. Additionally, the odds of behavior uptake is greater if an individual accesses digital information sources like the internet, mobile apps or social media, has a higher education qualification or cares for someone with a health condition. These findings contribute to the growing literature surrounding which population groups engage with environmental and health-relevant information channels, and what connects engagement with air quality channels and uptake of exposure reducing behaviors. These results reinforce the need for additional research around air pollution informational alerts and exploring causal links between specific exposure reducing behaviours and improved health outcomes. It can also help inform the flow of resources and targeting of informational campaigns towards sociodemographic groups that are less likely to engage with air quality information.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Since 2014, expected graft and recipient survival are matched by the U.S. kidney allocation system to improve organ utility. This mechanism is based on the kidney donor profile index (KDPI) and the estimated posttransplant survival score (EPTS). Here we analyzed 1. the transferability of these scores into the Eurotransplant (ET) region and 2. the extent to which the ET kidney allocation algorithm promotes utility. METHODS We studied data of 262 kidney transplantations performed at the University Hospital Kiel between 2000 and 2009 (median follow-up, 9.94 years). RESULTS Multivariable Cox regression analysis revealed that only the variables donor age of the KDPI and recipient's age of the EPTS have a significant value as predictors of posttransplant graft and recipient survival. The other variables showed no additional predictive value. Analyzing all kidneys allocated in the ET kidney allocation system and the European Senior Program, we found that donor and recipient's age and KDPI and EPTS were weakly correlated (rage-age = 0.5, P < .001; rKDPI-EPTS = 0.4, P < .01). If both programs were analyzed separately, no correlation between donor and recipient's age and between KDPI and EPTS was detected. CONCLUSION The ET kidney allocation algorithm poorly matched predicted graft and recipient survival at our center. A better age-matching may improve organ utility.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Lower-cost air quality sensors (hundreds to thousands of dollars) are now available to individuals and communities. This technology is undergoing a rapid and fragmented evolution, resulting in sensors that have uncertain data quality, measure different air pollutants and possess a variety of design attributes. Why and how individuals and communities choose to use sensors is arguably influenced by social context. For example, community experiences with environmental exposures and health effects and related interactions with industry and government can affect trust in traditional air quality monitoring. To date, little social science research has been conducted to evaluate why or how sensors, and sensor data, are used by individuals and communities, or how the introduction of sensors changes the relationship between communities and air quality managers. OBJECTIVES This commentary uses a risk governance/responsible innovation framework to identify opportunities for interdisciplinary research that brings together social scientists with air quality researchers involved in developing, testing, and deploying sensors in communities. DISCUSSION Potential areas for social science research include communities of sensor users; drivers for use of sensors and sensor data; behavioral, socio-political, and ethical implications of introducing sensors into communities; assessing methods for communicating sensor data; and harnessing crowdsourcing capabilities to analyze sensor data. CONCLUSIONS Social sciences can enhance understanding of perceptions, attitudes, behaviors, and other human factors that drive levels of engagement with and trust in different types of air quality data. New transdisciplinary research bridging social sciences, natural sciences, engineering, and design fields of study, and involving citizen scientists working with professionals from a variety of backgrounds, can increase our understanding of air sensor technology use and its impacts on air quality and public health.

Abstract
The stability of total (t) and free (f) prostate-specific antigen (PSA) in male serum specimens stored at –70°C or lower temperature for 4.7 to 4.9 years was studied. Until now, the stability of these analytes in serum has not been evaluated systematically beyond 2 years of storage at –70°C. Aliquots of frozen serum were thawed in 2001 and 2006 and assayed for tPSA and fPSA using a Dade Behring Dimension(r) RxL analyzer and reagents. tPSA values ranged from 0.07 to 69.94 and 0.00 to 69.83 ng/mL in 2001 and 2006, respectively, whereas fPSA values for the tested specimens ranged from 0.02 to 5.72 and 0.00 to 5.92, respectively. Deming regression analyses showed agreement in assay values over time as tPSA values yielded a slope of 1.0112 and a y-intercept of 0.0195; fPSA values produced a slope 1.0538 and a y-intercept of –0.0442; f/tPSA values yielded a slope of 0.9631 and a y-intercept of 0.1195. A Bland-Altman analysis of the data demonstrated analyte and ratio stability over this time period. We conclude that serum, when collected properly and stored at –70°C or lower temperature, may be used for tPSA and fPSA clinical studies for at least 5 years after collection.

Abstract
The transport of intense ion beams is affected by the collective behavior of this kind of multi-particle and multi-species system. The space charge expressed by the generalized perveance dominates the dynamical process of thermalisation, which leads to emittance growth. To prevent changes of intrinsic beam properties and to reduce the intensity dependent focusing forces, space charge compensation seems to be an adequate solution. In the case of positively charged ion beams, electrons produced by residual gas ionization and secondary electrons provide the space charge compensation. The influence of the compensation particles on the beam transport and the local degree of space charge compensation is given by different beam properties as well as the ion beam optics. Especially for highly charged ion beams, space charge compensation in combination with poor vacuum conditions leads to recombination processes and therefore increased beam losses. Strategies for providing a compensation-electron reservoir at very low residual gas pressures will be discussed.

Abstract
Legislation for people with disabilities has also changed due to other changes in the law, especially due to the recent ratification of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. These laws, in particular the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, with its inclusion of the right to equitable and universal access to education for people with disabilities and their implementation, are of central importance for students who are impaired. As part of the GINKO (the legislative effect laws have on the professional integration of those who are hard of hearing, people who have gone deaf and those who are deaf through communication and organization; promotion: BMAS) project, the following questions were also brought up for discussion and were investigated: to what extent hearing-impaired students are aware of legislation that benefits them, whether these laws will be implemented, and what factors have an impact on this legal knowledge or its implementation. Overall, 4,825 handicapped individuals with hearing impairments - including n=166 students - took part in the survey. The results of the evaluation of the group of hearing-impaired students indicate that many of them are not informed about laws important to them. It was also found that the knowledge of a law cannot be equated with its implementation. This survey also resulted in a resolve for the future, to demand information about legal options be reinforced, and to adjust this information to fit the needs of specific target groups, e.g. this information could be disseminated through sign language films. On the other hand, these results also apply to higher education, for these institutions to create learning conditions where existing regulatory design options for students with disabilities are implemented, thereby affording students an equal opportunity to participate in higher education.

Abstract
Khaya senegalensis (African mahogany or dry-zone mahogany) is a high-value hardwood timber species with great potential for forest plantations in northern Australia. The species is distributed across the sub-Saharan belt from Senegal to Sudan and Uganda. Because of heavy exploitation and constraints on natural regeneration and sustainable planting, it is now classified as a vulnerable species. Here, we describe the development of microsatellite markers for K. senegalensis using next-generation sequencing to assess its intra-specific diversity across its natural range, which is a key for successful breeding programs and effective conservation management of the species. Next-generation sequencing yielded 93,943 sequences with an average read length of 234 bp. The assembled sequences contained 1030 simple sequence repeats, with primers designed for 522 microsatellite loci. Twenty-one microsatellite loci were tested with 11 showing reliable amplification and polymorphism in K. senegalensis. The 11 novel microsatellites, together with one previously published, were used to assess 73 accessions belonging to the Australian K. senegalensis domestication program, sampled from across the natural range of the species. STRUCTURE analysis shows two major clusters, one comprising mainly accessions from west Africa (Senegal to Benin) and the second based in the far eastern limits of the range in Sudan and Uganda. Higher levels of genetic diversity were found in material from western Africa. This suggests that new seed collections from this region may yield more diverse genotypes than those originating from Sudan and Uganda in eastern Africa.

Abstract
The future use of single-molecule magnets in applications will require the ability to control and manipulate the spin state and magnetization of the magnets by external means. There are different approaches to this control, one being the modification of the magnets by adsorption of small ligand molecules. In this paper we use iron phthalocyanine supported by an Au(111) surface as a model compound and demonstrate, using x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and density functional theory, that the spin state of the molecule can be tuned to different values (S ∼ 0, [Formula: see text], 1) by adsorption of ammonia, pyridine, carbon monoxide or nitric oxide on the iron ion. The interaction also leads to electronic decoupling of the iron phthalocyanine from the Au(111) support.

Abstract
Methylamine adsorption on the ordered Ni(3)Al(111) and NiAl(110) surfaces has been investigated by high resolution photoelectron spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations. Methylamine adsorbs molecularly at both surfaces at low temperature (90 K). The experiments show that methylamine interacts with the surface aluminium atoms on both surfaces, resulting in a positive binding energy shift relative to the Al 2p bulk contributions. A shift towards lower binding energy is also observed on NiAl(110) attributed to first and second layer surface Al atoms not bonded to methylamine. According to total energy calculations methylamine binds through its N atom to Al on-top sites on NiAl(110) while the Ni on-top site is found to be slightly preferred over the Al on-top site on Ni(3)Al(111). Calculated adsorbate induced shifts are, however, in good agreement with the experimental values only when methylamine is situated in the Al on-top site on both surfaces. In both cases, a lone pair bonding mechanism is found.

Abstract
The self-assembly of organic molecules on surfaces is a promising approach for the development of nanoelectronic devices. Although a variety of strategies have been used to establish stable links between molecules, little is known about the electrical conductance of these links. Extended electronic states, a prerequisite for good conductance, have been observed for molecules adsorbed on metal surfaces. However, direct conductance measurements through a single layer of molecules are only possible if the molecules are adsorbed on a poorly conducting substrate. Here we use a nanoscale four-point probe to measure the conductivity of a self-assembled layer of cobalt phthalocyanine on a silver-terminated silicon surface as a function of thickness. For low thicknesses, the cobalt phthalocyanine molecules lie flat on the substrate, and their main effect is to reduce the conductivity of the substrate. At higher thicknesses, the cobalt phthalocyanine molecules stand up to form stacks and begin to conduct. These results connect the electronic structure and orientation of molecular monolayer and few-layer systems to their transport properties, and should aid in the rational design of future devices.

Abstract
We have determined the on-site molecular Coulomb interaction energy U of a (C59N)2 bulk film and find values ranging from 1.10+/-0.10 eV for the highest occupied molecular orbital to 1.35+/-0.10 eV for the deeper lying orbitals, comparable to values found in C60. The on-site Coulomb interaction between a carbon core hole and valence electrons, Uc, is, however, substantially lower than in C60 at 1.35+/-0.07 eV. Resonant photoemission (RESPES) results show a weakened participator decay channel, especially around the N 1s threshold, where resonance of the highest occupied molecular orbital shoulder is absent. Near-edge x-ray absorption fine structure and constant initial state measurements, taken in parallel with the RESPES data, indicate, however, that matrix element effects cannot be ruled out.

Abstract
The phenanthridine alkaloid lycobetaine is a minor constituent of Amaryllidaceae. Inhibition of cell growth was studied in the clonogenic assay on 21 human tumour xenografts (mean IC(50) = 0.8 microM). The growth of human leukaemia cell lines was also potently inhibited (mean IC(50) = 1.3 microM). Athymic nude mice, carrying s.c. implanted human gastric tumour xenograft GXF251, were treated i.p. with lycobetaine for 4 weeks, resulting in a marked tumour growth delay. Lycobetaine was found to act as a specific topoisomerase II beta poison. In the presence of calf thymus DNA, pure recombinant human topoisomerase II beta protein was selectively depleted from SDS-gels, whereas no depletion of topoisomerase II alpha protein was observed. In A431 cells immunoband-depletion of topoisomerase II beta was induced, suggesting stabilization of the covalent catalytic DNA-intermediate in living cells. It is reasonable to assume that this mechanism will cause or at least contribute significantly to the antitumour activity.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES duplex ultrasound has replaced angiography prior to carotid endarterectomy (CEA) in many institutions. However, the indications for CEA are based on angiographically controlled studies and widely accepted ultrasound criteria do not exist. Consequently, the reliability of Doppler and/or duplex ultrasound to predict a high-grade ICA stenosis has to be proven. DESIGN prospective validation study. MATERIALS one hundred and fifty carotid bifurcations assessed by ultrasound and selective angiography and 68 acrylat outcasts of carotid specimen after eversion CEA. METHODS ICA stenosis was measured angiographically according to the ECST criteria. Combined Doppler acoustic standard criteria (CDASC), peak systolic frequency (PSF), peak systolic velocity (PSV) and end-diastolic velocity (EDV) served as criteria for the ultrasound assessment. These criteria and the results of angiography were compared to the degree of ICA stenosis determined by specimen measurements. RESULTS the median degree of ICA stenosis as assessed by angiography (82%, range 56-97%) and CDASC (83%, range 50-99%) corresponded well to the specimen measurements (80%, range 50-95%). The sensitivity of angiography and CDASC to predict a 70-90% ICA stenosis (ECST criteria) compared to the specimen measurements was 88% and 95%, respectively. The positive predictive value (PPV) reached 92% and 96%, respectively. CDASC were equivalent to angiography and were superior to the best single frequency or velocity parameters. If CDASC do not indicate a >/=70% ICA stenosis in spite of a PSV >/=180 cm/s and/or an EDV >/=50 cm/s, angiography may detect patients with a >70% ICA stenosis. CONCLUSIONS CDASC are valid in the quantification of high-grade ICA stenosis. They are more reliable than single velocity and/or frequency measurements. However, if velocity criteria and CDASC do not agree, angiography should be performed.

Abstract
We describe a 36-year-old man who presented with hypocomplementemic urticarial vasculitis syndrome (HUVS) with severe renal involvement. Despite steroid therapy, the patient developed end-stage renal disease (ESRD) leading to chronic hemodialysis therapy. Renal transplantation was performed after hemodialysis therapy (secondary), and the patient developed a typical HUVS relapse 9 months after transplantation despite conventional immunosuppressive therapy that was successfully treated with plasma exchange. This case shows for the first time that HUVS can induce severe renal involvement responsible for ESRD and that HUVS can relapse after renal transplantation. It also suggests that plasma exchange therapy may be of value for rapidly controlling the clinical symptoms.

Abstract
We report on 4 elderly patients aged 54-85 years with histopathologically diagnosed pilomatricoma who had been seen in our department from 1993 to 1997. Pilomatricoma is a rather uncommon neoplasm in middle-aged and old patients. It is much better known in children. Here, we clinically studied these 4 cases of pilomatricoma in elderly patients (above 50 years of age) to show the variety of clinical differential diagnosis and discuss the clinicopathological features. The results of the present study indicate that the differential diagnosis of pilomatricoma should also be considered in elderly individuals.
