Application of poly aluminum chloride and alum as catalyst in catalytic ozonation process after coagulation for the treatment of textile wastewater

Textile wastewater is ranked highly contaminated among all industrial waste. During textile processing, the consumption of dyes and complex chemicals at various stages makes textile industrial wastewater highly challenging. Therefore, conventional processes based on single-unit treatment may not be sufficient to comply with the environmental quality discharge standards and more stringent guidelines for zero discharge of hazardous chemicals (ZDHC). In this study, a novel approach was followed by recycling Poly aluminum chloride (PACl) and Alum as a catalyst for the first time in the catalytic ozonation treatment process leading to a nascent method after using them as a coagulant in Coagulation/Flocculation. In the current investigation, six different combinations were studied to remove turbidity, TSS, COD, BOD₅, color, and biodegradability (BOD₅/COD ratios) of wastewater. Moreover, Central Composite Design was implied using RSM in Minitab software. During the combination of treatment processes, it was found that the pre-coagulation/flocculation with coagulant PACl followed by post-catalytic ozonation with recycled PACl, a more effective treatment than others. The optimum R.E of turbidity, TSS, COD, and color were 84%, 86%, 89%, and 98%, respectively. Moreover, a decrease in toxicity and increase in biodegradability (BOD₅/COD ratio from 0.29 to 0.54) was observed as well. The electrical energy demand and operational costs of treatment processes were estimated and compared with other treatment processes.

Influence of Silica Modulus and Curing Temperature on the Strength of Alkali-Activated Volcanic Ash and Limestone Powder Mortar

This present study evaluates the effect of silica modulus (M_s) and curing temperature on strengths and the microstructures of binary blended alkali-activated volcanic ash and limestone powder mortar. Mortar samples were prepared using mass ratio of combined Na₂SiO_3(aq)/10 M NaOH_(aq) of 0.5 to 1.5 at an interval of 0.25, corresponding to M_s of 0.52, 0.72, 0.89, 1.05 and 1.18, respectively, and sole 10 M NaOH_(aq). Samples were then subjected to ambient room temperature, and the oven-cured temperature was maintained from 45 to 90 °C at an interval of 15 °C for 24 h. The maximum achievable 28-day strength was 27 MPa at M_s value of 0.89 cured at 75 °C. Samples synthesised with the sole 10 M NaOH_(aq) activator resulted in a binder with a low 28-day compressive strength (15 MPa) compared to combined usage of Na₂SiO_3(aq)/10 M NaOH_(aq) activators. Results further revealed that curing at low temperatures (25 °C to 45 °C) does not favour strength development, whereas higher curing temperature positively enhanced strength development. More than 70% of the 28-day compressive strength could be achieved within 12 h of curing with the usage of combined Na₂SiO_3(aq)/10 M NaOH_(aq). XRD, FTIR and SEM + EDX characterisations revealed that activation with combined Na₂SiO_3(aq)/10 M NaOH_(aq) leads to the formation of anorthite (CaAl₂Si₂O₈), gehlenite (CaO.Al₂O₃.SiO₂) and albite (NaAlSi₃O₈) that improve the amorphosity, homogeneity and microstructural density of the binder compared to that of samples synthesised with sole 10 M NaOH_(aq).

Efficiency of generic and proprietary inhibitors in mitigating Corrosion of Carbon Steel in Chloride-Sulfate Environments

The efficiency of generic and proprietary corrosion inhibitors (based on nitrite, amine carboxylate or amino alcohol) in corrosion mitigation of carbon steel, which is exposed to concrete solutions with different amounts of chloride as well as sulfate, was studied. The corrosion protection provided by the selected corrosion inhibitors was investigated by performing a potentiodynamic polarization study. In addition, the surface morphological properties of carbon steel samples exposed to the electrolyte mixed with or without inhibitors was also evaluated by scanning electron microscopy. The potentiodynamic polarization measurements showed that the evaluated inhibitors decreased the corrosion current density by 1.6 to 6.7 times depending on the type of inhibitor and the level of sulfate concentration in the electrolyte. The performance of inhibitors based on nitrite was better than that of inhibitors based on amine carboxylate or amino alcohol. The possible mechanisms of the inhibition in the chloride plus sulfate environments are also elucidated.
