Neurocognitive basis of model-based decision making and its metacontrol in childhood

Human behavior is supported by both goal-directed (model-based) and habitual (model-free) decision-making, each differing in its flexibility, accuracy, and computational cost. The arbitration between habitual and goal-directed systems is thought to be regulated by a process known as metacontrol. However, how these systems emerge and develop remains poorly understood. Recently, we found that while children between 5 and 11 years displayed robust signatures of model-based decision-making, which increased during this developmental period, there were substantial individual differences in the display of metacontrol. Here, we inspect the neurocognitive basis of model-based decision-making and metacontrol in childhood and focus this investigation on executive functions, fluid reasoning, and brain structure. A total of 69 participants between the ages of 6-13 completed a two-step decision-making task and an extensive behavioral test battery. A subset of 44 participants also completed a structural magnetic resonance imaging scan. We find that individual differences in metacontrol are specifically associated with performance on an inhibition task and individual differences in thickness of dorsolateral prefrontal, temporal, and superior-parietal cortices. These brain regions likely reflect the involvement of cognitive processes crucial to metacontrol, such as cognitive control and contextual processing.

A decision model for ranking Asian Higher Education Institutes using an NLP-based text analysis approach

Identification of the best institute for higher education has become one of the most challenging issues in the present education system. It has become more complicated as more institutes exist with extraordinary infrastructural facilities. Therefore a decision model is required to identify the best institute for higher education based on multiple criteria. This paper proposes a Natural Language Processing (NLP) based decision model for the identification of the best higher education institute using MCDM methods. The existing decision models for the selection of the best higher education institutions consider a limited number of criteria for decision making. In this proposed model, 17 criteria and 15 institute datasets have been identified for the development of the decision model through extensive research and experts opinion. The NLP-based text analysis approach is applied to extract the relevant information and convert it to a suitable format. As the relative importance of the criteria plays a crucial role in decision making, CRITIC and Rank centroid methods are applied for the calculation of relative weights of criteria. TOPSIS method is used to generate the ranking grades of alternatives for each criterion. An objective function is defined to calculate the evaluation scores and select the best institute for higher education. It has been observed that the ranks obtained from the developed model match pretty well with the ranks obtained from other MCDM methods and the experts.

Experimental Investigation of Geopolymer Flexible Pavement with Waste Plastics Aggregates

The world is facing a greater issue in the disposal of waste plastics and there is an intense need for research on alternate and sustainable solutions for environmental issues. Waste plastic can be used as aggregates or as a protective layer over aggregates to increase their strength. The aggregate used in flexible pavements was investigated in this study, as well as the use of Geo-Polymer to improve the pavement’s strength and durability. The design of the pavement is done according to the Indian standard codes IRC. Dense bituminous macadam and base courses are taken into account as per the design criteria. The geo-polymer flexible pavement was tested for properties such as the wearing test. Other fundamental tests for aggregate and bitumen used in pavements include specific gravity, flash point, fire point, ductility, softening point, penetration test, water absorption test, bonding strength, durability, and temperature resistance. When geo-polymer plastic bitumen is heated and put as a coating over the base course, it allows the user the air gaps with additional plastic and binds over the aggregate, resulting in increased road stability, smoothness, and vehicle braking effects. It is concluded that with 5% addition of the geo-polymer with bitumen has performed well in all aspects of the bitumen characteristics.

Configuration spaces of hard spheres

Hard sphere systems are often used to model simple fluids. The configuration spaces of hard spheres in a three-dimensional torus modulo various symmetry groups are comparatively simple and could provide valuable information about the nature of phase transitions. Specifically, the topological changes in the configuration space as a function of packing fraction have been conjectured to be related to the onset of first-order phase transitions. The critical configurations for 1 to 12 spheres are sampled using a Morse-theoretic approach, and they are available in an online, interactive database. Explicit triangulations are constructed for the configuration spaces of the two sphere system, and their topological and geometric properties are studied. The critical configurations are found to be associated with geometric changes to the configuration space that connect previously distant regions and reduce the configuration space diameter as measured by the commute time and diffusion distances. The number of such critical configurations around the packing fraction of the solid-liquid phase transition increases exponentially with the number of spheres, suggesting that the onset of the first-order phase transition in the thermodynamic limit is associated with a discontinuity in the configuration space diameter.

Use of the temporal extension of the buccal fat pad for closure of oro-antral communications

Oro-antral communications/fistulae (OAC/OAF) can cause significant patient morbidity, with treatment for defects greater than 5mm in size requiring surgical reconstruction. This technical note evaluates the effectiveness, and proposes the use of, the temporal extension of the buccal fat pad (TEBFP) for the closure of large OAC. The TEBFP can be an effective means of large OAC closure due to its ease of harvesting, with minimal damage to surrounding structures or aesthetic changes. The use of the TEBFP provides stability, versatility, and tension-free closure, with minimal postoperative complications.

Magnesium Aluminate Nanoparticles for Chemical Detoxification of Sarin and Soman

The solutions of Mg(NO₃)₂, Al(NO₃)₃, and (NH₄)₂CO₃ were mixed at pH 8 and then heated at 95 °C for 4 h, aged at room temperature for 16 h, and calcined at 650 °C for 4 h to obtain magnesium aluminate nanoparticles. The obtained materials exhibited spinel structure with the particle size being 6 to 26 nm. The nanoparticles demonstrated type IV nitrogen adsorption isotherm, typical of mesoporosity with a surface area of 325 m²/g. They were utilized for studies on chemical detoxification of deadly chemical warfare agents such as sarin and soman. Our results showed that the magnesium aluminate nanoparticles effectively decontaminated more than 99% of sarin and soman within 8-10 min when used at a ratio of 1:50-60% w/w.

PredictSuperFam-PSS-3D1D: A server for predicting superfamily for the annotation of twilight zone protein sequences

Annotation of twilight zone protein sequences has been hitherto attempted by predicting the fold of the given sequence. We report here the PredictSuperFam-PSS-3D1D method, which predicts the superfamily for a given twilight zone (TZ) protein sequence. Earlier, we have reported that adding predicted secondary structure information into the threading methods could improve fold prediction especially for the TZ protein sequences. In this study, we have analysed the application of the same method to predict superfamilies. Here, in this method, the twilight zone protein sequence is threaded with the 3D1D profiles of the known protein superfamilies library. In addition, weightage for the predicted secondary structure (PSS) is also employed. The performance of the method is benchmarked with twilight zone sequences. In the benchmarks, 62 and 65 percentages of superfamily predictions are obtained with GOR IV and NPS@ predicted secondary structures, respectively. Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curves indicate that the method is sensitive in predicting the superfamilies. A case study has been conducted with the hypothetical protein sequences of Schistosoma haematobium (Blood Fluke) using this method and the results are analyzed. Our method predicts the superfamily for TZ sequences for which, methods based on sequence similarity alone are inadequate. Chemical Protection Studies of Activated Carbon Spheres based Permeable Protective Clothing Against Sulfur Mustard, a Chemical Warfare Agent

Technological advancements in the field of chemical threat have made it possible to create extremely dangerous chemical warfare agents (CWA). Hence, the effective protection of personnel is very important in a chemical warfare scenario amidst the current climate of terrorism awareness. In particular, body protection plays a substantial role in the chemical defence considering the urgency of situation in the nuclear, biological and chemical environment. Activated carbon spheres (ACS) based permeable chemical protective clothing (coverall) was developed for protection against CWA. The adsorbent material i.e, ACS used in this protective clothing provided higher adsorption capacity (1029 mg/g in terms of iodine) and low thermal burden (34 °C WBGT index) compared to earlier indigenously developed NBC suit. This article focuses on the extensive evaluation of chemical protective clothing against sulfur mustard (HD), a CWA. The results revealed that the developed protective clothing provided more than 24 h protection against HD. This chemical protective suit is light weight (< 2.75 kg for XL size). It also has higher air permeability (> 30 cm3/s/cm2) as well as less water vapour resistance (< 9.6 m2Pa/W). With continued innovations in materials and attention to key challenges it is expected that advanced, multifunction chemical protective suit will play a pivotal role in the CWA protection scenario.

Lingual frenotomy in neonates: past, present, and future

During the last decade, increasing awareness of breastfeeding and its health benefits has not been reflected in the provision of lingual frenotomy in neonates with tongue-tie. This could be because of inconsistencies in our understanding of the importance and treatment of ankyloglossia. In this review, we discuss the current clinical guidance on diagnosis and management, and the future of such a service in the early postpartum period.

Incidences of mortality of Indian peafowl Pavo cristatus due to pesticide poisoning in India and accumulation pattern of chlorinated pesticides in tissues of the same species collected from Ahmedabad and Coimbatore

Incidences of mortality of Indian peafowl Pavo cristatus, the national bird (Schedule I Indian Wild Life Protection Act 1972), are rampant in India. Between January 2011 and March 2017, around 550 peafowl in 35 incidences were reported dead across the country. Due to the non-availability of fresh carcases, poisoning could not be confirmed. Birds which died due to kite string injuries in Ahmedabad (15) and accidents in Coimbatore (5) were tested for residues of chlorinated pesticides, namely hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH), dichloro-diphenyl-trichloroethane (DDT), endosulfan, heptachlor, dicofol, dieldrin and cholipyrifos. The liver, kidney and muscle were the tissues considered to document pesticide load. Total load ranged from BDL to 388.2 ng/g. DDT (95%) and HCH (80%) were detected more frequently. DDT (40%) and endosulfan (26%) contributed maximum to the total pesticide load followed by HCH (21%). Pesticide accumulation pattern among the organs was in the order of liver (123.9 ng/g) > kidney (91.9 ng/g) > muscle (19.5 ng/g) with significant difference (p < 0.05). Peafowl from Ahmedabad had significantly (p < 0.05) higher level of total pesticide (149.0 ng/g) than birds from Coimbatore (47.8 ng/g). Although varying levels of chlorinated pesticide were detected, they were below reported toxic limits. Nevertheless, persistence of chlorinated pesticides and poisoning due to modern pesticides across the entire distribution range of Peafowl in India is a cause for concern.

Complete genome sequence and comparative genomics of the probiotic yeast Saccharomyces boulardii

The probiotic yeast, Saccharomyces boulardii (Sb) is known to be effective against many gastrointestinal disorders and antibiotic-associated diarrhea. To understand molecular basis of probiotic-properties ascribed to Sb we determined the complete genomes of two strains of Sb i.e. Biocodex and unique28 and the draft genomes for three other Sb strains that are marketed as probiotics in India. We compared these genomes with 145 strains of S. cerevisiae (Sc) to understand genome-level similarities and differences between these yeasts. A distinctive feature of Sb from other Sc is absence of Ty elements Ty1, Ty3, Ty4 and associated LTR. However, we could identify complete Ty2 and Ty5 elements in Sb. The genes for hexose transporters HXT11 and HXT9, and asparagine-utilization are absent in all Sb strains. We find differences in repeat periods and copy numbers of repeats in flocculin genes that are likely related to the differential adhesion of Sb as compared to Sc. Core-proteome based taxonomy places Sb strains along with wine strains of Sc. We find the introgression of five genes from Z. bailii into the chromosome IV of Sb and wine strains of Sc. Intriguingly, genes involved in conferring known probiotic properties to Sb are conserved in most Sc strains.

An insight into the harmful effects of soy protein: A review

Soy protein (SP) is a protein derived from soybean meal. SP is obtained from the removal of the outer shell of soybean and the fatty acid. The dietary supplementation of SP was was reported to have positive effects on human health. Therefore, the attention towards SP is increasing among the consumers, industrialist and researchers. However, the side effects and toxicity related to SP was not summarized, to date. This review summarized the toxic effects such as hormonal disturbances, carcinogenic and organotoxicity of SP based on the clinical and experimental studies. The review mainly focused on the effect of soy isoflavone-genistein on various organs. The main aim of the present review is to increase the public awareness on the harmful effect of SP on the various health aspects and draw the attention of the health care personnel and researchers.

Inhibitory Effect of Sophorolipid on Candida albicans Biofilm Formation and Hyphal Growth

Candida albicans causes superficial and life-threatening systemic infections. These are difficult to treat often due to drug resistance, particularly because C. albicans biofilms are inherently resistant to most antifungals. Sophorolipid (SL), a glycolipid biosurfactant, has been shown to have antimicrobial and anticancer properties. In this study, we investigated the effect of SL on C. albicans biofilm formation and preformed biofilms. SL was found to inhibit C. albicans biofilm formation as well as reduce the viability of preformed biofilms. Moreover, SL, when used along with amphotericin B (AmB) or fluconazole (FLZ), was found to act synergistically against biofilm formation and preformed biofilms. Effect of SL on C. albicans biofilm formation was further visualized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM), which revealed absence of hyphae, typical biofilm architecture and alteration in the morphology of biofilm cells. We also found that SL downregulates the expression of hypha specific genes HWP1, ALS1, ALS3, ECE1 and SAP4, which possibly explains the inhibitory effect of SL on hyphae and biofilm formation.

A comparative study on defect estimation using XPS and Raman spectroscopy in few layer nanographitic structures

Defects in planar and vertically oriented nanographitic structures (NGSs) synthesized by plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) have been investigated using Raman and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy.

Control of Aedes aegypti and Ae. albopictus, the vectors of dengue and chikungunya, by using pheromone C21 with an insect growth regulator: Results of multicentric trials from 2007-12 in India

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES

Aedes mosquito control has gained much importance nowadays in view of rise in number of reported cases of dengue and chikungunya in India and other countries. In the present study, C21 attracticide (containing a pheromone and an insect growth regulator—IGR, developed by Defence Research and Development Establishment (DRDE), Gwalior, India was tested for its feasibility for surveillance and control of Aedes mosquito in a multicentric mode from October 2007 to June 2012 in urban (Delhi, and Bengaluru district, Karnataka) and suburban (Alappuzha district, Kerala) settings of the country in three phases.

METHODS

Across the randomly selected households in each study area, two to four containers treated with attracticide (experimental) and untreated (control) were placed and monitored by trained surveillance workers on weekly/ fortnightly basis for determining the presence of eggs, larvae and pupae. Container positivity, percent larvae, egg and pupae collected were determined during different phases and analyzed statistically using SPSS 18.0.

RESULTS

Container positivity was found statistically significant at Bengaluru and Alappuzha, Kerala while in Delhi, it was found non-significant. Eggs collected from experimental containers were significantly higher in comparison to control at all the locations except Delhi. Also larvae collected from control containers were significantly higher at all the locations except Bengaluru. Pupae collected from control containers remained significantly higher at all the locations as no pupal formation was recorded from experimental containers.

INTERPRETATION & CONCLUSION

The use of C21 attracticide hampered pupal formation, thus inhibiting adult population in the study areas. The study established that C21 attracticide was efficacious in the field conditions and has potential for use in surveillance and management of dengue and chikungunya mosquitoes.

Flipping growth orientation of nanographitic structures by plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition

Nanographitic structures (NGSs) with a multitude of morphological features are grown on SiO₂/Si substrates by electron cyclotron resonance-plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (ECR-PECVD).

Acute inhalation toxicity of smoke of fentanyl and its 1-substituted analogs in Swiss albino mice

Fentanyl (N-(1-phenethyl-4-piperidinyl)propionanilide) is a synthetic, potent narcotic analgesic agent. However, it is known to have several side effects, which led to synthesis and evaluation of its new analogs for the management of pain. We have earlier reported the comparative bioassay of fentanyl and its eight 1-substituted analogs (1-8) in mice. Three compounds, viz., N-(1-(2-phenoxyethyl)-4-piperidinyl)propionanilide (2), N-isopropyl-3-(4-(N-phenylpropionamido)piperidin-1-yl)propanamide (5), and N-t-butyl-3-(4-(N-phenylpropionamido)piperidin-1-yl)propanamide (6) were found to be more effective and less toxic compared to fentanyl. The present study reports the comparative acute inhalation toxicity of smoke of fentanyl and its three analogs, viz., 2, 5, and 6 in mice. Animals were exposed to different concentrations of smoke generated by heating the compounds. Exposure was performed in a head only all glass static exposure assembly for 15 min to determine the median lethal concentration (LC50). The breathing pattern and various respiratory parameters of the animals were also monitored online using a polygraph. Out of three compounds tested, analog 5 was found to be most toxic (LC50 = 2820 mg/m3) while 2 was least toxic (LC50 = >8000 mg/m3). All the compounds caused long lasting respiratory depression in a dose-dependent manner, which did not completely resolve even after discontinuation of exposure. Aerodynamic median diameter and geometric standard deviation of smoke particles was determined employing eight-stage Andersen sampler. The particles were found to be within the respirable range. The study, however, concludes that due to possible decomposition of the compounds by heating or its poor absorption by the alveolar surface, the present inhalation technique cannot be employed to generate smoke of fentanyl and its analogs for any medical or surreptitious use.

Aggregation responses of Cimex hemipterus F. to semiochemicals identified from their excreta

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES

Bedbug Cimex hemipterus lives in cracks and crevices, and shows aggregation activity in the harbourage containing its fecal matter. Limited information is available on the chemicals influencing this aggregation behaviour in C. hemipterus. Possible components responsible for aggregation, if identified and evaluated can be helpful in designing bedbug management.

METHODS

Study on the isolation and identification of chemicals from the excreta extract responsible for aggregation has been carried by GC-MS. The compounds identified were evaluated at different concentrations to C. hemipterus and their attraction index was determined.

RESULTS

The GC-MS analysis of the excreta extract resulted in identification of 33 different types of semiochemicals such as esters, carboxylic acids, alcohols, aldehydes, ketones and other hydrocarbons. Among these 33 compounds of various groups, the carboxylic acid (E)-2-hexenoic acid and the aldehyde (E)-2-hexenal found to elicit highest positive aggregation behavioural response in all the stages followed by hexenal.

INTERPRETATION & CONCLUSION

The fecal matter influence the aggregation behaviour in C. hemipterus. (E)-2-hexenoic acid, hexanoic acid, (E)-2-hexenal and hexanal found to exhibit aggregation in various stages of bedbug life cycle. These chemical components can be further exploited for designing and development tool for management of bedbugs.

A prospective comparison study of fast T1 weighted fluid attenuation inversion recovery and T1 weighted turbo spin echo sequence at 3 T in degenerative disease of the cervical spine

OBJECTIVE

This study compared T1 fluid attenuation inversion recovery (FLAIR) and T1 turbo spin echo (TSE) sequences for evaluation of cervical spine degenerative disease at 3 T.

METHODS

72 patients (44 males and 28 females; mean age of 39 years; age range, 27-75 years) with suspected cervical spine degenerative disease were prospectively evaluated. Sagittal images of the spine were obtained using T1 FLAIR and T1 TSE sequences. Two experienced neuroradiologists compared the sequences qualitatively and quantitatively.

RESULTS

On qualitative evaluation, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) nulling and contrast at cord-CSF, disc-CSF and disc-cord interfaces were significantly higher on fast T1 FLAIR images than on T1 TSE images (p < 0.001). No significant difference was seen between the sequences in evaluation of neural foramina and bone-disc interface. On quantitative evaluation, the signal-to-noise ratios of cord and CSF on fast T1 FLAIR images were significantly higher than those on T1 TSE images (p < 0.05). Contrast-to-noise ratios (CNRs) of cord to CSF on T1 FLAIR images were significantly higher than those of T1 TSE images (p < 0.05). CNRs of bone to disc for T1 weighted TSE images were significantly higher than those of T1 FLAIR images (p < 0.05).

CONCLUSION

At 3 T, T1 FLAIR imaging is superior to T1 TSE for evaluating cervical spine degenerative disease, owing to higher cord-CSF, disc-cord and disc-CSF contrast. However, intrinsic cord contrast is low on T1 FLAIR images.

ADVANCES IN KNOWLEDGE

T1 FLAIR is more promising and sensitive than T1 TSE for evaluation of degenerative spondyloarthropathy and may provide a foundation for development of MR protocols for early detection of degenerative and neoplastic diseases.

A compact high-performance low-field NMR apparatus for measurements on fluids at very high pressures and temperatures

We discuss an innovative new high-performance apparatus for performing low-field Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) relaxation times and diffusion measurements on fluids at very high pressures and high temperatures. The apparatus sensor design and electronics specifications allow for dual deployment either in a fluid sampling well logging tool or in a laboratory. The sensor and electronics were designed to function in both environments. This paper discusses the use of the apparatus in a laboratory environment. The operating temperature and pressure limits, and the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the new system exceed by a very wide margin what is currently possible. This major breakthrough was made possible by a revolutionary new sensor design that breaks many of the rules of conventional high pressure NMR sensor design. A metallic sample holder capable of operating at high pressures and temperatures is provided to contain the fluid under study. The sample holder has been successfully tested for operation up to 36 Kpsi. A solenoid coil wound on a slotted titanium frame sits inside the metallic sample holder and serves as an antenna to transmit RF pulses and receive NMR signals. The metal sample holder is sandwiched between a pair of gradient coils which provide a linear field gradient for pulsed field gradient diffusion measurements. The assembly sits in the bore of a low-gradient permanent magnet. The system can operate over a wide frequency range without the need for tuning the antenna to the Larmor frequency. The SNR measured on a water sample at room temperature is more than 15 times greater than that of the commercial low-field system in our laboratory. Thus, the new system provides for data acquisition more than 200 times faster than was previously possible. Laboratory NMR measurements of relaxations times and diffusion coefficients performed at pressures up to 25 Kpsi and at temperatures up to 175 °C with crude oils enlivened with dissolved hydrocarbon gases (referred to as "live oils") are shown. This is the first time low-field NMR measurements have been performed at such high temperatures and pressures on live crude oil samples. We discuss the details of the apparatus design, tuning, calibration, and operation. NMR data acquired at multiple temperatures and pressures on a live oil sample are discussed.

A protein block based fold recognition method for the annotation of twilight zone sequences

The description of protein backbone was recently improved with a group of structural fragments called Structural Alphabets instead of the regular three states (Helix, Sheet and Coil) secondary structure description. Protein Blocks is one of the Structural Alphabets used to describe each and every region of protein backbone including the coil. According to de Brevern (2000) the Protein Blocks has 16 structural fragments and each one has 5 residues in length. Protein Blocks fragments are highly informative among the available Structural Alphabets and it has been used for many applications. Here, we present a protein fold recognition method based on Protein Blocks for the annotation of twilight zone sequences. In our method, we align the predicted Protein Blocks of a query amino acid sequence with a library of assigned Protein Blocks of 953 known folds using the local pair-wise alignment. The alignment results with z-value ≥ 2.5 and P-value ≤ 0.08 are predicted as possible folds. Our method is able to recognize the possible folds for nearly 35.5% of the twilight zone sequences with their predicted Protein Block sequence obtained by pb_prediction, which is available at Protein Block Export server.

Dynamic stabilization of the optical resonances of single nitrogen-vacancy centers in diamond

We report electrical tuning by the Stark effect of the excited-state structure of single nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers located ≲100  nm from the diamond surface. The zero-phonon line (ZPL) emission frequency is controllably varied over a range of 300 GHz. Using high-resolution emission spectroscopy, we observe electrical tuning of the strengths of both cycling and spin-altering transitions. Under resonant excitation, we apply dynamic feedback to stabilize the ZPL frequency. The transition is locked over several minutes and drifts of the peak position on timescales ≳100  ms are reduced to a fraction of the single-scan linewidth, with standard deviation as low as 16 MHz (obtained for an NV in bulk, ultrapure diamond). These techniques should improve the entanglement success probability in quantum communications protocols.

PDB-2-PB: a curated online protein block sequence database

This article describes the development of a curated online protein block sequence database, PDB-2-PB. The protein block sequences for protein structures with complete backbone coordinates have been encoded using the encoding procedure of de Brevern, Etchebest & Hazout [Proteins(2000),41, 271–287]. In the current release of the PDB-2-PB database (version 1.0), the protein entries from a recent release of the World Wide Protein Data Bank (wwPDB), which has 74 297 solved PDB entries as of 7 July 2011, have been used as a primary source. The PDB-2-PB database stores the protein block sequences for all the chains present in a protein structure. PDB-2-PB version 1.0 has the curated protein block sequences for 103 252 PDB chain entries (93 547 X-ray, 7033 NMR and 2672 other experimental chain entries). From the PDB-2-PB database, users can extract the curated protein block sequence and its corresponding amino acid sequence, which is extracted from the PDB ATOM records. Chemical warfare agents

Among the Weapons of Mass Destruction, chemical warfare (CW) is probably one of the most brutal created by mankind in comparison with biological and nuclear warfare. Chemical weapons are inexpensive and are relatively easy to produce, even by small terrorist groups, to create mass casualties with small quantities. The characteristics of various CW agents, general information relevant to current physical as well as medical protection methods, detection equipment available and decontamination techniques are discussed in this review article. A brief note on Chemical Weapons Convention is also provided.

Acute toxicity studies of safer and more effective analogues of N,N-diethyl-2-phenylacetamide

The present work was designed to evaluate the toxicity of various synthesized aromatic amides that are analogs of N,N-diethyl-2-phenylacetamide, a well known insect repellent. The toxicity profile of these compounds was compared with N,N-diethyl-2-phenylacetamide as well as other registered insect repellents namely N,N-diethyl-3-methyl benzamide and N,N-diethylbenzamide. The primary skin irritation index values of the compounds, dermal toxicity of the chemicals and acute oral toxicity data to assess the safety of the synthesized aromatic amides are reported in this paper. Results of hematological and biochemical studies of these analogues are reported and discussed.

Effect of calcinations temperature of CuO nanoparticle on the kinetics of decontamination and decontamination products of sulphur mustard

Present study investigates the potential of CuO nanoparticles calcined at different temperature for the decontamination of persistent chemical warfare agent sulphur mustard (HD) at room temperature (30 ± 2 °C). Nanoparticles were synthesized by precipitation method and characterized by using SEM, EDAX, XRD, and Raman Spectroscopy. Synthesized nanoparticles were tested as destructive adsorbents for the degradation of HD. Reactions were monitored by GC-FID technique and the reaction products characterized by GC-MS. It was observed that the rate of degradation of HD decreases with the increase in calcination temperature and there is a change in the percentage of product of HD degradation. GC-MS data indicated that the elimination product increases with increase in calcination temperature whereas the hydrolysis product decreases.
