Abstract
Trichomonas vaginalis, a flagellated and anaerobic protozoan, is a causative agent of trichomoniasis. This disease is among the world's most common non-viral sexually transmitted infection. A single class drug, nitroimidazoles, is currently available for the trichomoniasis treatment. However, resistant isolates have been identified from unsuccessfully treated patients. Thus, there is a great challenge for a discovery of innovative anti-T. vaginalis agents. As part of our ongoing search for antiprotozoal chalcones, we designed and synthesized a series of 21 phenolic chalcones, which were evaluated against T. vaginalis trophozoites. Structure-activity relationship indicated hydroxyl group plays a role key in antiprotozoal activity. 4'-Hydroxychalcone (4HC) was the most active compound (IC50 = 27.5 µM) and selected for detailed bioassays. In vitro and in vivo evaluations demonstrated 4HC was not toxic against human erythrocytes and Galleria mellonella larvae. Trophozoites of T. vaginalis were treated with 4HC and did not present significant reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation. However, compound 4HC was able to increase ROS accumulation in neutrophils coincubated with T. vaginalis. qRT-PCR Experiments indicated that 4HC did not affect the expression of pyruvate:ferredoxin oxidoreductase (PFOR) and β-tubulin genes. In silico simulations, using purine nucleoside phosphorylase of T. vaginalis (TvPNP), corroborated 4HC as a promising ligand. Compound 4HC was able to establish interactions with residues D21, G20, M180, R28, R87 and T90 through hydrophobic interactions, π-donor hydrogen bond and hydrogen bonds. Altogether, these results open new avenues for phenolic chalcones to combat trichomoniasis, a parasitic neglected infection.

Abstract
This article presents a case report for the treatment of a patient with a flared root. The patient was treated with a bulk-fill flowable composite. This innovative approach seems to be efficient in reinforcing flared roots. The advantages and disadvantages of the technique are presented.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Sample stability is essential to obtain reliable results in the clinical laboratory. This study was conducted to investigate the reliability of hematological parameters using ABX Pentra 60 in samples stored for up to 72 hours at different temperatures. METHODS A total of 651 blood samples were analyzed at different analysis times: 2, 24, 48, and 72 hours and forms and storage: room temperature (25°C) and at 4°C. The imprecision of the results was evaluated by the analytical coefficient of variation (CVa%) obtained by the typical error (TE) and Kruskal-Wallis analysis, to compare the averages. The reliability of the results was evaluated by the CVa (%) within the maximum allowable analytical variation and by the difference of means of the results in relation to the baseline sample (2 hours). RESULTS Red blood count, hemoglobin, and MCH parameters showed stability up to 72 hours at room temperature and at 4°C. The other complete blood count parameters showed imprecision results emitted by the ABX Pentra 60 from 24 hours of sample storage, independent of the storage temperature. In addition, there were significant oscillations in the mean values, particularly for the samples stored at room temperature, with the exception of platelet parameters that exhibited mean changes also at 4°C. CONCLUSION The results demonstrate the importance of the clinical analyst's knowledge about the behavior of the CBC parameters over time under different storage conditions, and mainly the imprecision of the hematological equipment used, for the suitable interpretation of the results.

Abstract
Anomalous colourations occur in many tropical vertebrates. However, they are considered rare in wild populations, with very few records for the majority of animal taxa. We report two new cases of anomalous colouration in mammals. Additionally, we compiled all published cases about anomalous pigmentation registered in Neotropical mammals, throughout a comprehensive review of peer reviewed articles between 1950 and 2010. Every record was classified as albinism, leucism, piebaldism or eventually as undetermined pigmentation. As results, we report the new record of a leucistic specimen of opossum (Didelphis sp.) in southern Brazil, as well as a specimen of South American fur seal (Arctocephalus australis) with piebaldism in Uruguay. We also found 31 scientific articles resulting in 23 records of albinism, 12 of leucism, 71 of piebaldism and 92 records classified as undetermined pigmentation. Anomalous colouration is apparently rare in small terrestrial mammals, but it is much more common in cetaceans and michrochiropterans. Out of these 198 records, 149 occurred in cetaceans and 30 in bats. The results related to cetaceans suggest that males and females with anomolous pigmentation are reproductively successful and as a consequence their frequencies are becoming higher in natural populations. In bats, this result can be related to the fact these animals orient themselves primarily through echolocation, and their refuges provide protection against light and predation. It is possible that anomalous colouration occurs more frequently in other Neotropical mammal orders, which were not formally reported. Therefore, we encourage researchers to publish these events in order to better understand this phenomenon that has a significant influence on animal survival.

Abstract
Advances in understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) have resulted in an increasing number of biomarkers that can be used to predict the behaviour of this disease. The authors conducted a literature review of studies examining the role of immunohistochemistry-based protein biomarkers in predicting OSCC outcome. Only articles published in PubMed-indexed journals over the past 5 years were considered. 22 molecular biomarkers were identified and classified into five groups based on their biological functions: cell cycle acceleration and proliferation; tumour suppression and apoptosis; hypoxia; angiogenesis; and cell adhesion and matrix degradation. The cell cycle acceleration and proliferation biomarkers showed the most divergent prognostic findings. Studies on tumour suppression and apoptosis biomarkers were the most prevalent. There were only a few studies examining molecular biomarkers of hypoxia and angiogenesis, and studies examining cell adhesion and matrix degradation biomarkers have shown that this group has the greatest potential for assessing prognostic parameters. Amongst the several proteins analysed, the immunohistochemical expression levels of epithelial growth factor receptor (EGFR), p53, and matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) have demonstrated the greatest potential for survival prediction in OSCC, but this review demonstrates that their prognostic relevance is debatable and requires further standardisation.

Abstract
Among Vespertilionidae species, sexual size dimorphism is very well documented, in which females are larger than males. The differences are mainly in body weight, skull measurements and forearm length. Studies have discussed some hypothesis for this phenomenon. However, very little information is known about sexual size dimorphism in Myotis nigricans (Schinz, 1821) in Brazil. In this sense, the goal of this paper is to present a study of this phenomenon in the species. For this, we present a quantitative analysis of sexual size dimorphism assessed by traditional morphometrics. Ten skull measurements in addition to the forearm length of adult specimens were taken. Results of traditional morphometrics revealed sexual size dimorphism in five skull measurements and in the forearm length. Females were larger than males. These differences can be attributed to natural selection on large female size for increase fecundity. Bat females of the Vespertilionidae family are usually larger than males in order to perform parental care appropriately and to provide a successful reproductive process.

Abstract
We present a quantitative analysis of sexual dimorphism and geographic variation in the skull of Myotis nigricans (Schinz, 1821) assessed by geometric morphometrics. Differences in size and shape of skulls were investigated using 30 landmarks plotted on two-dimensional images of lateral and ventral views. Results of geometric morphometrics revealed sexual dimorphism in the centroid size of the skull in both views. Females were larger than males. Nevertheless, there was no sexual dimorphism in skull shape of M. nigricans. Geographic variation was detected in size and shape of the skull. South Brazilian specimens were significantly larger than Ceará specimens only in the lateral view. Differences in skull shape were statistically significant in both views: specimens from South Brazil were brevirostri and presented a more expanded skull in the posterior region while Ceará specimens were longirostri and do not present any expansion in the brain case. Ecological factors for these phenomena are discussed in the text.

Abstract
Dopa-responsive dystonia (DRD), also known as Segawa syndrome or hereditary progressive dystonia with diurnal fluctuation, is clinically characterized by the occurrence of simultaneous or late Parkinsonism and by an excellent response to treatment with low doses of L-dopa. Diagnosis of DRD is essentially clinical. It is based on clinical history and the response to treatment with low doses of L-dopa. However, due to the low penetrance of the disease, asymptomatic carriers may exist. In these cases, mutational analysis of the GCH1 gene is an alternative to diagnose DRD. In the present study, we investigated a large DRD-carrier family in an attempt to identify the disease-causing mutation. The proband, a young woman diagnosed at the age of 13 years, is the daughter of a healthy non-consanguineous couple with history of several cases, on the maternal side of the family, of tip-toeing, disturbance of gait, Parkinsonism, rigidity and cramps in the lower limbs. Using single strand conformational polymorphism and DNA sequencing techniques to analyze DNA extracted from blood samples, we identified a mutation in the GCH1 gene, IVS5+3insT, which would preclude the formation of the active enzyme due to the formation of truncated peptides.

Abstract
The survival rate of domestic male and female adult Panstrongylus megistus was studied after sequential heat and cold shocks in order to investigate shock tolerance compared to that previously reported for nymphs. Sequential shocks were such that a milder shock (0°C, 5°C, 35°C, or 40°C for 1 h) preceded a severe one (0°C or 40°C for 12 h), separated by intervals of 8, 18, 24, and 72 h at 28°C (control temperature). The preliminary thermal shock induced tolerance to the more severe one, although tolerance intensity depended on the initial shock temperature and the interval between treatments. Despite the observed tolerance, the survival rate for insects subjected to both shocks decreased when compared to that of individuals subjected to a single mild shock. When tolerance differed with sex, females showed greater values than males. In contrast to the response detected in nymphs, for which higher heat tolerance values were sustained for intervals of up to 24 h (preliminary shock, 35ºC) or even longer (preliminary shock, 40ºC) between sequential shocks, significant values were verified in adults only for shock intervals of up to 8 h (preliminary shock, 40ºC). While findings for nymphs exhibited considerable cold-shock tolerance under conditions in which preliminary shocks were given at 5ºC or 0ºC and the periods between shocks were up to 72 h long, the adults were shown to be capable of acquiring a substancial tolerance response to a more severe cold shock only when the preliminary shock was given at 0ºC and shock interval surpassed 18 h. It is assumed that the mechanisms involved in the cellular protection of P. megistus under sequential temperature shocks (heat shock protein action?) may loose effectiveness with insect development.

Abstract
A 44-year-old woman had a transient ischemic stroke, fibroelastoma of the mitral valve being the source of the embolus. The patient evolved with neutropenia induced by ticlopidine after 10 days of treatment. We report the major clinical features, therapeutical options, and medicamentous toxicity resulting from the use of antiplatelet drugs.
