Monitoring Arthropods in maize and pasture fields in São Miguel and São Jorge Islands: IPM-Popillia Project

Background

The dataset presented here is an achievement of the H2020 European project "Integrated Pest Management of the Invasive Japanese Beetle, Popilliajaponica (IPM-Popillia)". This project addresses the challenge of a new risk to plant health in Europe, the invasion of the Japanese beetle, Popilliajaponica (Newman, 1838) (Coleoptera, Rutelidae) and provides an environmentally friendly IPM Toolbox to control the expanding pest populations across Europe. This study aims to present the records of terrestrial arthropod diversity with a special focus on four groups belonging to Carabids and Staphylinid beetles (Coleoptera), Opiliones and Anisolabididae (Dermaptera), collected with the potential to be used as biocontrol agents against P.japonica in future Integrated Pest Management programmes. A thorough sampling programme was conducted in maize and pasture fields in two Islands of the Azores (São Miguel and São Jorge) in the summer of 2022.

New information

We provided an inventory of the arthropods recorded in two Azorean agroecosystems (maize and pasture fields) from São Miguel and São Jorge Islands. A total of ten maize and ten pasture fields were sampled and a total of 360 pitfall traps were installed, 216 in São Miguel and 144 in São Jorge, for seven consecutive days in August and September of 2022.We collected 18559 specimens belonging to the phylum Arthropoda, four classes, twelve orders, twenty-six families and forty morphospecies (two identified at the family level as carabid and Staphylinid larvae and 38 identified at the species level). We identified 38 taxa at the species level (n = 18281). Of the 38 identified taxa, 18 species were predators, 15 were plant feeders and five were omnivores. The 18 predators belong to the following families: 10 species were Carabidae, two Staphylinidae, one Anisolabididae, one Chrysopidae, one Leiobunidae, one Nabidae, one Phalangiidae and one Scathophagidae. Concerning the origin of the predators, we recorded five native species: two Carabidae, one Leiobunidae, one Scathophagidae and one Nabidae. The other 13 predator species were introduced or indeterminate.

Multivariate statistics applied to the reaction of common bean plants to parasitism by Meloidogyne javanica

The availability of common bean cultivars tolerant to Meloidogyne javanica is limited in Brazil. Thus, the present study aimed to evaluate the reactions of 33 common bean genotypes (23 landrace, 8 commercial, 1 susceptible standard and 1 resistant standard) to M. javanica, employing multivariate statistics to discriminate the reaction of the genotypes. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse using a completely randomized design with seven replicates. The seeds were sown in 1-L pots containing autoclaved soil and sand in a 1:1 ratio (v:v). On day 19, after emergence of the seedlings, the plants were treated with inoculum containing 4000 eggs + second-stage juveniles (J2). At 60 days after inoculation, the seedlings were evaluated based on biometric and parasitism-related traits, such as number of galls, final nematode population per root system, reproduction factor, and percent reduction in the reproduction factor of the nematode (%RRF). The data were subjected to analysis of variance using the F-test. The Mahalanobis generalized distance was used to obtain the dissimilarity matrix, and the average linkage between groups was used for clustering. The use of multivariate statistics allowed groups to be separated according to the resistance levels of genotypes, as observed in the %RRF. The landrace genotypes FORT-09, FORT-17, FORT-31, FORT-32, FORT-34 and FORT-36 presented resistance to M. javanica; thus, these genotypes can be considered potential sources of resistance.

[Caring of the mental patient in the emergency room: feelings and attitudes of the nursing team members]

This work is based upon a day-by-day study of the services provide by a nurse team at a mentally impaired emergency room. Our aim is to study staff's reactions toward the patients as well as service itself. We could feel the dynamic relation among thinking, feeling and performance created strong conceptions on individuals based upon a common sense. The feelings noticed are: pity, scare and rage depending upon behavior. The assistance given to the mentally impaired is, at large, based exclusively on technical data resorted to organic/biological aspects.

Este estudo surgiu da preocupação em avaliar as necessidades de conhecimento em enfermagem psiquiátrica, dos enfermeiros que atuam nos ambulatórios de saúde mental Verificamos a formação desses enfermeiros, as ações por eles desenvolvidas e as dificuldades e facilidades encontradas no desempenho das mesmas. Foi verificado, também, se as ações desempenhadas correspondem às preconizadas pela literatura. A análise dos dados levou à constatação de que a maioria daquelas ações são executadas pelos enfermeiros de forma diferenciada nos seis ambulatórios estudados. Percebemos, em certos casos, desvio de função nas atividades tanto das enfermeiras como nas dos demais membros da equipe de enfermagem,

[The nursing care of patients with a behavioral manifestation arising from a withdrawal from reality]

With this study the authors want to furnish the nurses with one more reference source to guide their actions in caring for the patient with manifestation of reality withdrawal. Some concepts of withdrawal are presented and, summarily, the clinical manifestation. Nursing care is described considering their problems and general measures to be taken into account for patients individuality.

[Mental health actions of the nurse in a basic health unit]

É comum ouvirmos falar da inespecificidade das ações da enfermeira em saúde mental. Isto tem sido mais acentuado após a ênfase que tem sido dada ao trabalho multiprofissional com a participação da enfermeira, trabalho que é realmente produtivo quando cada profissional conhece suas ações específicas. Em face desta crença, com base em nossa experiência e na revisão de literatura conhecida, apresentamos uma proposta de ações de saúde mental específicas da enfermeira, em Unidade Básica de Saúde, e aquelas que podem também ser exercidas por outros profissionais. Esperamos, desta forma, contribuir para que a enfermeira assuma realmente seu papel e não mais justifique o não desempenho de suas funções alegando a não definição das mesmas.
