Abstract
In the paper, new detection methods that can be used to detect signals in a miniature MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical System) electron microscope were presented. The methods were designed to fit the structure of the developed MEMS microscope, equipped with an electron-optical microcolumn and a scanning system based on an octupole deflector. In the experiments carried out, imaging was performed using a system of three silicon detectors placed above, below, and at the sample level and integrated with the octupole deflection system. Measurements were carried out under different pressure conditions (vacuum and atmospheric pressure) and for different detector bias voltage and electron beam energy. Good quality images were obtained using all three detectors, both in vacuum and in air. The results presented indicate that in the final implementation of the MEMS electron microscope, all three detection systems can be successfully incorporated.

Diminazene Aceturate Stabilizes Atherosclerotic Plaque and Attenuates Hepatic Steatosis in apoE-Knockout Mice by Influencing Macrophages Polarization and Taurine Biosynthesis. Int J Mol Sci 2021; 22:5861. Abstract
Atherosclerosis and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease are leading causes of morbidity and mortality in the Western countries. The renin-angiotensin system (RAS) with its two main opposing effectors, i.e., angiotensin II (Ang II) and Ang-(1-7), is widely recognized as a major regulator of cardiovascular function and body metabolic processes. Angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) by breaking-down Ang II forms Ang-(1-7) and thus favors Ang-(1-7) actions. Therefore, the aim of our study was to comprehensively evaluate the influence of prolonged treatment with ACE2 activator, diminazene aceturate (DIZE) on the development of atherosclerotic lesions and hepatic steatosis in apoE-/- mice fed a high-fat diet (HFD). We have shown that DIZE stabilized atherosclerotic lesions and attenuated hepatic steatosis in apoE-/- mice fed an HFD. Such effects were associated with decreased total macrophages content and increased α-smooth muscle actin levels in atherosclerotic plaques. Moreover, DIZE changed polarization of macrophages towards increased amount of anti-inflammatory M2 macrophages in the atherosclerotic lesions. Interestingly, the anti-steatotic action of DIZE in the liver was related to the elevated levels of HDL in the plasma, decreased levels of triglycerides, and increased biosynthesis and concentration of taurine in the liver of apoE-/- mice. However, exact molecular mechanisms of both anti-atherosclerotic and anti-steatotic actions of DIZE require further investigations.

Fabrication and characterization of a miniaturized octupole deflection system for the MEMS electron microscope. Ultramicroscopy 2021; 225:113288. Abstract
This article describes a miniature electron beam scanning system based on an octupole electrode as the key stage of the implementation of the MEMS electron microscope. The scanning system consists of a silicon electrode with a central hole, containing 8 properly powered elements and a special electronic system controlling voltage. Octupole electrode was made using MEMS technology. First, it was examined using computer simulations, and then the operation of the octupole system was tested using a reference electron beam in the SEM JEOL microscope. The scanning system parameters depend on the electron beam energy, distance between the octupole and the sample, and the applied voltage. It is possible either to obtain an octupole scanning system resolution of 27 nm (for electron beam energy E = 4 keV and octupole observation plane distance H = 1 mm) or a large scanning area up to 2.7 mm (E = 4 keV, H = 20 mm), without any significant distortion of the sample image. Subsequently, the first model of the MEMS electron microscope microcolumn was assembled, containing the field-emission cathode, an extraction electrode, a focusing electrode, an octupole electrode, and an anode. The first images of the observed hexagonal metal grid placed on the silicon anode were recorded inside a reference high vacuum chamber.

Identification of uterine telocytes and their architecture in leiomyoma. FOLIA MEDICA CRACOVIENSIA 2019; 58:89-102. Abstract
INTRODUCTION Uterine leiomyoma is the most widespread benign tumor affecting women of childbearing age. ere are still gaps in the understanding of its pathogenesiss. Telocytes are unique cells described in greater than 50 different locations inside the human body. The functional relationship of cells could clarify the pathogenesis of leiomyomata. In the current study, we focused on the identification of telocytes in all regions of the human uterus to explain their involvement in leiomyoma development. MATERIALS AND METHODS Tissue samples from a healthy and myomatous uterus were stained for c-kit, tryptase, CD34 and PDGFRα to identify telocytes. Routine histology was performed to analyze tissue morphology and collagen deposits. RESULTS Telocytes were detected in the cervix, corpus of the uterus and leiomyoma. The density of telocytes in fibroid foci was reduced compared with normal myometrium. CONCLUSIONS Our results demonstrated the existence of telocytes in all parts of the human body affected and unaffected by leiomyoma of the uterus. In addition, telocytes were also present in leiomyoma foci. Our results suggest that the reduced density of telocytes is important for the pathomechanisms of myometrial growth, demonstrating its value as a main component of the myomatous architecture.

Abstract
The autonomic innervation of the uterus is involved in multiple pathophysiological processes in both humans and animals. Pathological conditions such as adenomyosis or inflammatory pelvic disease are usually accompanied by significant alterations in uterine innervation. In the current study, we focused on autonomic innervation of uterine fibroids, the identification of recently described interstitial cells, telocytes, and the possible interplay between these structures. In this work, uterine telocytes were identified by immunopositivity for c-kit, CD34, and PDGFRα. Nerves were revealed by immunolabeling for neuronal markers: protein gene product PGP 9.5, inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), choline acetyltransferase (ChAT), and tyrosine hydroxylase (TH). The gross organization of myometrial tissue has been analyzed by routine histology. The results demonstrated that the density of iNOS and ChAT-immunopositive neurons in the uterine fibroids was higher than that in the control samples. The density of telocytes in the fibrosis foci was lower than that in the normal myometrium. Our results suggest that autonomic innervation and telocytes are involved in the microenvironment imbalance characteristic of uterine leiomyoma. Since NOS-positive nerves play an important role in oxidative stress modulation, they might lead to a decrease in the number of telocytes, which are crucial components in the pathogenesis of leiomyoma formation.

The influence of AICAR - direct activator of AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) - on liver proteome in apoE-knockout mice. Eur J Pharm Sci 2017; 104:406-416. Abstract
There is a growing body of evidence that altered functioning of apoE may aggravate cellular energy homeostasis and stress response, leading to oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress and inflammation, leading to hypercholesterolemia, dyslipidemia, liver steatosis and neurodegeneration. One of the key cellular responses to mitochondria and ER-stress related processes and cellular energy imbalance is AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), considered as a cellular master energy sensor and critical regulator of mitochondrial homeostasis. The aim of our study was to use differential proteomics and transcriptomics approach to elucidate the effect of direct AMPK activator AICAR on liver proteome in apoE-/- mice - experimental model of atherosclerosis and moderate nonalcoholic steatosis. We applied Isobaric Tags for Relative and Absolute Quantitation (iTRAQ) labeling and two-dimensional chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (2DLC-MS/MS) MudPIT strategy, as well as RT-PCR to investigate the changes in mitochondrial and cytosolic proteins and transcripts expression in 6-month old AICAR-treated apoE-/-. AICAR elicited induction of proteins related to mitochondrial β-oxidation, protein degradation and energy producing pathways (i.a. tricarboxylic acid cycle members and mitochondrial adenylate kinase 2). On the other hand, AICAR repressed inflammatory and pro-apoptotic markers in the apoE-/- mice liver, alongside reduction in several peroxisomal proteins, possibly suggesting induction of anti-oxidative pexophagy.

Abstract
The present study describes a family with multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 (MEN1) caused by a previously undescribed in-frame deletion c.1246_1248delGCC (Ala416del) in the MEN1 gene. Evidence for the pathogenic character of this mutation, which triggers an aggressive clinical outcome, is demonstrated. Aggregation analysis in the tested family was strongly suggestive of causality of the detected mutation. This was supported by the analysis of LOH (loss of heterozygosity) in tumor-derived DNA and by computational analysis of the functional and structural implications of the mutation. Different phenotypic characteristics were identified among family members, which is typical for MEN1. Additionally, an unexpected disease inheritance pattern was observed in this kindred, in which either all or none of the siblings of one branch inherited the disease.

The effect of peripheral chronic salsolinol administration on fat pad adipocytes morphological parameters. FOLIA MEDICA CRACOVIENSIA 2016; 56:81-95. Abstract
Salsolinol (1-methyl-6,7-dihydroxy-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinoline) is thought to regulate dopaminergic neurons and to act as a mediator in the neuroendocrine system. We have previously reported that exogenous salsolinol evokes enteric neuronal cell death, leading to the impairment of myenteric neurons density and abnormal intestinal transit in rats. We also observed significant reduction of body weight, related to the disrupted gastrointestinal homeostasis. e aim of current study was to evaluate the influence of prolonged salsolinol administration body weight, food intake, adipose tissue accumulation and fad pad adipocyte morphological parameters assessed by image analysis. Male Wistar rats were subjected to continuous intraperitoneal low dosing of salsolinol - 200 mg/kg in total with ALZET osmotic mini-pumps (Durtec, USA) for 2 or 4 weeks with either normal or high-fat diet. Appropriate groups served as the controls. Food intake, body weight were measured each morning. Both epididymal fat pads were dissected, weighted and processed for routine hematoxylin and eosin staining. e following parameters: cell area, perimeter, long and short axis, aspect ratio and circularity factor were assessed in stained specimens with the image analysis system (Multiscan, Poland). Salsolinol administration significantly reduced total body mass with no differences in total food intake between the groups. The epididymal fat pad weight over final body mass ratio was lower in salsolinol treated rats on high fat diet in comparison with the control groups. e area, perimeter, short and long axis of the fad pad adipocytes were significantly decreased in salsolinol treated animals in comparison with relevant controls. Salsolinol targets some regulatory mechanisms concerned with the basic rat metabolism. Prolonged peripheral salsolinol administration in rats significantly decreases the adipocyte size, and such effect is related to the weight loss and reduced adipose tissue accumulation.

Laparoscopic transperitoneal lateral adrenalectomy for malignant and potentially malignant adrenal tumours. BMC Surg 2015; 15:101. Abstract
Background Laparoscopic adrenalectomy is still controversial in cases where malignancy is suspected. However, many proponents of this technique argue that in the hands of an experienced surgeon, laparoscopy can be safely performed. The aim of this study is to present our own experience with the application of laparoscopic surgery for the treatment of malignant and potentially malignant adrenal tumours. Methods Our analysis included 52 patients who underwent laparoscopic adrenalectomy in 2003–2014 due to a malignant or potentially malignant adrenal tumour. Inclusion criteria were primary adrenal malignancy, adrenal metastasis or pheochromocytoma with a PASS score greater than 6. We analyzed the conversion rate, intra- and postoperative complications, intraoperative blood loss and R0 resection rate. Survival was estimated using the Kaplan-Meier method. Results Conversion was necessary in 5 (9.7 %) cases. Complications occurred in a total of 6 patients (11.5 %). R0 resection was achieved in 41 (78.8 %) patients and R1 resection in 9 (17.3 %) patients. In 2 (3.9 %) cases R2 resection was performed. The mean follow-up time was 32.9 months. Survival depended on the type of tumour and was comparable with survival after open adrenalectomy presented in other studies. Conclusions We consider that laparoscopic surgery for adrenal malignancy can be an equal alternative to open surgery and in the hand of an experienced surgeon it guarantees the possibility of noninferiority. Additionally, starting a procedure with laparoscopy allows for minimally invasive evaluation of peritoneal cavity. The key element in surgery for any malignancy is not the surgical access itself but the proper technique.

Abstract
Background Mitochondrial dysfunction has been shown to play an important role in the development of atherosclerosis and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Mitochondrial aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH2), an enzyme responsible for the detoxification of reactive aldehydes, is considered to exert protective function in mitochondria. We investigated the influence of Alda‐1, an activator of ALDH2, on atherogenesis and on the liver steatosis in apolipoprotein E knockout (apoE−/−) mice. Methods and Results Alda‐1 caused decrease of atherosclerotic lesions approximately 25% as estimated by “en face” and “cross‐section” methods without influence on plasma lipid profile, atherosclerosis‐related markers of inflammation, and macrophage and smooth muscle content in the plaques. Plaque nitrotyrosine was not changed upon Alda‐1 treatment, and there were no changes in aortic mRNA levels of factors involved in antioxidative defense, regulation of apoptosis, mitogenesis, and autophagy. Hematoxylin/eosin staining showed decrease of steatotic changes in liver of Alda‐1‐treated apoE−/− mice. Alda‐1 attenuated formation of 4‐hydroxy‐2‐nonenal (4‐HNE) protein adducts and decreased triglyceride content in liver tissue. Two‐dimensional electrophoresis coupled with mass spectrometry identified 20 differentially expressed mitochondrial proteins upon Alda‐1 treatment in liver of apoE−/− mice, mostly proteins related to metabolism and oxidative stress. The most up‐regulated were the proteins that participated in beta oxidation of fatty acids. Conclusions Collectively, Alda‐1 inhibited atherosclerosis and attenuated NAFLD in apoE−/− mice. The pattern of changes suggests a beneficial effect of Alda‐1 in NAFLD; however, the exact liver functional consequences of the revealed alterations as well as the mechanism(s) of antiatherosclerotic Alda‐1 action require further investigation.

Abstract
This study was performed to evaluate the ability of N-(2-hydroxypropyl)-3-tri methylammonium chitosan chloride (HTCC), the cationically modified chitosan, to form biologically inactive complexes with unfractionated heparin and thereby blocking its anticoagulant activity. Experiments were carried out in rats in vivo and in vitro using the activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT) and prothrombin time (PT) tests for evaluation of heparin anticoagulant activity. For the first time we have found that HTCC effectively neutralizes anticoagulant action of heparin in rat blood in vitro as well as in rats in vivo. The effect of HTCC on suppression of heparin activity is dose-dependent and its efficacy can be comparable to that of protamine-the only agent used in clinic for heparin neutralization. HTCC administered i.v. alone had no direct effect on any of the coagulation tests used. The potential adverse effects of HTCC were further explored using rat experimental model of acute toxicity. When administered i.p. at high doses (250 and 500 mg/kg body weight), HTCC induced some significant dose-dependent structural abnormalities in the liver. However, when HTCC was administered at low doses, comparable to those used for neutralization of anticoagulant effect of heparin, no histopathological abnormalities in liver were observed.

Abstract
Angiogenesis (neoangiogenesis), a process of neovascularization, is an essential step for local tumor growth and distant metastasis formation. We have analysed angiogenesis status: vascular architecture, microvessel density, and vascular endothelial growth factors expression in 62 adrenal pheochromocytomas: 57 benign and 5 malignant. Immunohistochemical evaluation revealed that vascular architecture and vessel density are different in the central and subcapsular areas of the tumor. Furthermore, we have observed a strong correlation between number of macrophages and microvessel density in the central and subcapsular areas of the tumor and between the expression of VEGF-A in tumor cells and microvessel density in central and subcapsular areas of the tumor. Secondary changes in these tumors influence the results and both vascular architecture and microvessel density are markedly disturbed by hemorrhagic and cystic changes in pheochromocytomas. These changes are partially caused by laparoscopic operation technique. However, no differences in vascular parameters were found between pheochromocytomas with benign and malignant clinical behavior. Our observation showed that analysis of angiogenesis, as a single feature, does not help in differentiating malignant and benign pheochromocytomas and has no independent prognostic significance. On the other hand, high microvessel density in pheochromocytoma is a promising factor for antiangiogenic therapy in malignant cases.

Abstract
Epithelioid haemangioendothelioma (EH) is a very rare neoplasm. It is assumed that these tumours derive from vascular endothelial cells. The aim of the study was to identify the immunohistochemical profile of tumour cells in lung EH. The unique material consisting of eight cases of lung EH was collected and examined by immunohistochemistry with three antibodies: CD-31, CD105, both marking vascular endothelial cells, and D2-40, marking lymphatic endothelial cells. In all cases, the cytoplasm of tumour cells showed widespread expression of CD-31. Reaction with CD-105 antibody gave a positive result mainly in the cytoplasm of tumour cells located at the periphery of tumours, especially in highly cellular neoplasms containing spindle cells. Reaction with D2-40 antibody in most cases was negative. The presence of a few capillary vessels with positive endothelial cells was revealed in two cases at the periphery of the tumour. Only in one case of a highly cellular tumour did a small portion of spindle cells show a positive reaction to D2-40. The above studies confirmed the origin of EH mainly from vascular endothelial cells. Medications inhibiting vascular endothelial growth factors can be considered as a treatment option for multifocal EH that does not qualify for surgical intervention.

Abstract
Pheochromocytoma (PH) is a tumour of chromaffin cells of the sympathetic nervous system and its clinical symptoms are associated with excessive production and release of catecholamines. The main criterion for clinical diagnosis of PH is finding increased concentrations of catecholamines or their metabolites in serum and/or urine. The largest diagnostic and therapeutic problems are patients with slightly elevated levels of methoxycatecholamines in serum and/ or urine. Aim of this study was to determine the cut-off point for elevated methoxycatecholamine in the collection of daily urine, which would give the basis for determining the reasonable recommendations of the biochemical criteria for diagnosis of PH. Retrospectively we analysed the results of 45 patients sent to laparoscopic adrenalectomy to the Department of General Surgery II with the preoperative diagnosis of pheochromocytoma. The diagnosis of pheochromocytoma was based on the finding of elevated 24-hour urine methoxycatecholamines. Based on the results of the histopathological examination patients were divided into two groups. Group 1 included 27 patients (14 women and 13 men) with histopathologically confirmed pheochromocytoma of adrenal gland. Group 2 consisted of 18 patients (11 women and 7 men), in which histopathological examination did not confirm the presence of pheochromocytoma. Mean age of patients in group 1: 46.8 +/- 14.4 years, in group 2: 55.7 +/- 13.7 years. Hypertension was diagnosed in 77.8% of those with group 1 and 94.4% from group 2. Based on the analyzed results of the CT, we found that the average tumor size in group 1 (4.2 +/- 1.9 cm) was statistically higher than in group 2 (2.9 +/- 1.1 cm). The average concentration of normetanephrine (NMN) in 24-hour urine in group 1 was statistically significantly higher than in group 2 (2,686 +/- 870.4 vs. 2375.1 +/- 754 mg/24h), as well as the average concentration of metanephrine (MN) (2533.4 +/- 3269.3 +/- 491.6 vs. 371.5 mg/24 hrs), and the sum of both methoxycatecholamines (NMN + MN) (5219.3 +/- 5190.6 vs. 1241.8 +/- 1202.2). The highest sensitivity in diagnosing pheochromocytoma with the rate of 81.5% was obtained for the sum of normetanephrine and metanephrine in 24-hour urine, while the sensivity for levels of each methoxycatecholamine separately was similar (63%). The highest specificity in the exclusion of PH was shown for 24-hour urine metanephrine (94.4%). The highest positive predictive value was found for the level of metanephrine in 24-hour urine (94.4%). The diagnostic cutoff concentrations of NMN, MN and NMN + MN for the diagnosis of pheochromocytoma were set. For the 24-hour urine NMN- cut-off > 1500 ug/24 h, for MN > 700 ug/24h and for NMN + MN > 1350 ug/24h. Shown above cut-off levels of methoxycatecholamines urine concentration will allow to pose a more accurate preoperative diagnosis of PH.

Abstract
Adenomatoid tumour (AT) is a rare, benign neoplasm of mesothelial origin, which usually occurs in the genital tract of both sexes. Occasionally these tumours are found in extra genital locations such as heart, pancreas, skin, pleura, omentum, lymph nodes, retroperitoneum, intestinal mesentery and adrenal gland. Histologically ATs show a mixture of solid and cystic patterns usually with focal presence of signet-ring like cells and scattered lymphoid infiltration. The most important thing about these tumours is not to mis-diagnose them as primary malignant or metastatic neoplasms. We present a case of an adrenal AT in a 29-year-old asymptomatic male. The tumour was an incidental finding during abdominal CT-scan for an unrelated condition. We also present a review of the literature concerning adrenal gland AT and give possible differential diagnosis.

Immunophenotype of isolated tumour cells in the blood, bone marrow and lymph nodes of patients with gastric cancer. POL J PATHOL 2007; 58:93-7. Abstract
Immunophenotype of isolated (disseminated or circulating) tumour cells (ITC) in the blood, bone marrow and lymph nodes were studied in patients with gastric cancer. Coexpression of metalloproteinases inducer (EMMPRIN), chemokine receptors (CCR6, CXCR4) and adhesion molecules (Ep-CAM, CD44) was determined on cytokeratin positive (CK+) cells in CD45- cell population sorted out from the blood and/or bone marrow. Eight cytospin samples of blood and 69 samples of bone marrow containing CK+ cells from patients with gastric cancer were included into study. Expression of EMMPRIN and CCR6 were noted in a half of CK+ samples (of blood/bone marrow) whereas the expression of CXCR4 and Ep-CAM was much lower. Analysis of paired data of these determinants expression on CK+ cells showed no association between them. Expression of EMMPRIN, Ep-CAM, CCR6, CCR7, CXCR1, and CXCR4 on ITC in lymph nodes was determined by flow cytometry. In 18 lymph nodes (out of 36 assayed) CK+ cells were found. The expression of CCR6 and Ep-CAM on CK+ cells was observed in almost all studied lymph nodes, CXCR1--in half of them. The expression of EMMPRIN and CCR7 cells was lower. These results suggest that ITC of gastric cancer express variably several molecules that may be involved in metastasis formation.

Abstract
A small focus of choriocarcinoma has been incidentally found within an otherwise normal, third trimester placenta which was sent to the pathomorphological examination because of the stillbirth of the child at 31st week of gestation. The autopsy of the child was not performed. Macroscopically focus of choriocarcinoma has looked as a small infarct and was indistinguishable from the second lesion, which was microscopically confirmed to be a real infarct. beta-hCG level was increased at the time of delivery, but come back to normal very quickly. There were no metastases in the mother at the time of delivery and the follow-up did not show any evidence of metastatic disease either.

[Olfactory neuroblastoma removed under endoscopic guidance]. OTOLARYNGOLOGIA POLSKA 2006; 60:433-6. [PMID: 16989461] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [MESH Headings] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Indexed: 05/11/2023]
Abstract
INTRODUCTION Olfactory neuroblastoma is a rare tumour associated with high rates of recurrence and mortality. Treatment includes surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, or a combination. The ideal treatment modality has yet to be determined. MATERIAL AND METHODS 46-years old male underwent bilateral endoscopic ethmoidectomy due to chronic sinusitis. During surgery, a 5 mm in diameter tumour was identified in the left superior nasal meatus. On histopathological examination the diagnosis of esthesioneuroblastoma was established and confirmed by immunohistochemistry. The tumour was classified according to Kadish as stage A, according to Biller as T1. MR scans performed two months later disclosed pathological tissues in the left ethmoid region. RESULTS Multiple biopsies taken on subsequent frontosphenoethmoidectomy did not contain tumour cells. The patient declined radiotherapy. He has been asymptomatic over the 12 monthsí follow-up period. CONCLUSIONS The exclusively surgical treatment proved effective due to early stage of the tumour and no evidence of infiltration of the frontal skull base. This strategy, however, requires frequent follow-up visits.

Abstract
Lymphoepithelial carcinoma of the salivary glands is a very rare malignancy comprising not more than 0.4% of all salivary gland neoplasms in the non-endemic areas. In contrast it is much more frequent among native Greenlanders, North American Inuit (Eskimo) and Southern Chinese people living in Hong Kong. We report a case of a 74-year-old woman of Polish origin diagnosed with a lymphoepithelial carcinoma of the right parotid gland. The neoplastic cells were negative for EBV latent membrane protein (LMP-1), but in situ hybridisation for EBV mRNA (EBER) demonstrated positivity in almost all epithelial cells. No signs of EBV infection were found in the reactive lymphocytic component. The patient was treated with radiotherapy.

Assessing microvessel density in gastric carcinoma: a comparison of three markers. POL J PATHOL 2003; 54:249-52. Abstract
Angiogenesis (AG) is necessary for cancer progression. In some cases the intensity of AG may affect the prognosis. The aim of the study was to compare the results of vessel density assessment using the stereological method and immunohistochemical reactions for three endothelial markers: CD31, CD34 and vWf. The material consisted of 40 gastric carcinoma cases. The specimens were processed and the immunohistochemical reactions performed routinely. To assess the microvascular density the stereological parameter of "length density" and the "hot spots" method were employed. Image acquisition and the measurements were done using the image analysis system AnalySIS 3.0 pro with custom-made applications. It was observed that CD34-stained preparations were the easiest to assess. The number of labeled vessels, and especially microvessels, was also the highest in the case of the above reaction. The results achieved in AG evaluation using various endothelial markers are not directly comparable. The vascular network density was significantly associated with tumor stage. Such an association was most clearly seen in CD34 reactions.

Synchronous serrated adenoma of the appendix and high-grade ovarian carcinoma: a case demonstrating different origin of the two neoplasms. POL J PATHOL 2002; 53:29-34. Abstract
Association of mucinous adenomas of the appendix and mucinous ovarian tumors is well known. The origin of the ovarian tumor (metastasis from the appendix vs independent primary) is still debated. Serrated adenoma is a rare neoplasm of the distal gastrointestinal tract, and its precancerous role in the colorectum was recently postulated. A 74-year-old patient was subjected to hysterectomy with routine appendectomy due to a 17-cm tumor of her right ovary. Histological examination revealed a high-grade ovarian adenocarcinoma with peritoneal involvement. The appendix, grossly unremarkable, harbored a serrated adenoma with no evidence of invasion or malignant transformation. Immunohistochemical examination revealed CD7+, CK20-phenotype of the ovarian and reverse (CK7-, CK20+) phenotype of the appendiceal tumor. Microsatellite analysis demonstrated microsatellite instability (MSI-high) within the serrated adenoma (4/5 markers with positive amplification) and no MSI (0/6 amplified markers) in the samples from the ovarian carcinoma, its metastases and the uninvolved uterine cervix. There were also differences in LOH pattern between the ovarian adenocarcinoma and the serrated adenoma. The findings suggest two independent primaries with profound differences in tumorigenetic pathways of both lesions. To the best of our knowledge this is the first report of synchronous serrated adenoma of the appendix and ovarian carcinoma.

Fatal post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorder following allogeneic bone marrow transplantation for aplastic anemia. POL J PATHOL 2002; 53:35-40. Abstract
Post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorder (PTLD) constitutes a serious complication of allogeneic bone marrow transplantation. We describe a case of PTLD in a twenty-six year-old male treated with bone marrow transplantation for aplastic anemia of unknown cause. The patient received unmanipulated marrow graft from his HLA-matched brother. Fifty-one days post transplant he developed progressive enlargement of cervical lymph nodes, followed by hepatosplenomegaly and generalized lymphadenopathy. Polymorphic PTLD was diagnosed basing on the lymph node histopathology, positive EBV detection, flow cytometry and IgH rearrangement studies proving monoclonality (capillary electrophoresis with ABI PRISM 310 Genetic Analyzer). There was no response to anti-CD20 antibody, cessation of immunosuppression, donor lymphocyte infusion and cytostatic therapy. The patient died on the 65th day of multiple organ failure. We discuss the diagnostics and management of PTLD in the setting of bone marrow transplantation.
