Abstract
Organic amines are important compounds present in a wide variety of products, which makes the development of new systems for their detection an interesting field of study. New organometallic complexes of group 9 [MCp*X(2'-R-2-py-SBF)] (M = Ir, Rh; R = H, X = Cl (6), R = H, X = OAc (7), R = CHO, X = Cl (8)), and [IrCp*Cl(2', 7-diCHO-2-py-SBF)] (9) (Cp* pentamethylcyclopentadienyl, SBF = 9,9'-spirobifluorene) bearing bidentate C-N ligands based on 9,9'-spirobifluorene were obtained and characterized by NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, IR spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction analysis when possible. The formation of a Schiff base to give complexes with the formula [MCp*Cl(2'-CH=NR-2-py-SBF)] (M = Ir, Rh; R = alkyl or aryl (10-12)), through condensation of an amine, and the aldehyde group present in these new complexes was studied leading to a selective reactivity depending on the nature of the amine and the metal center. While the iridium complexes only react with aromatic amines, the rhodium derivative requires heat for those but can react at room temperature with aliphatic amines.

Abstract
Three new spirobifluorene iridaaromatic compounds bearing electron-withdrawing or electron-donor substituents or another iridanaphthalene moiety have been synthesized and structurally characterized. Thorough experimental and theoretical evaluation revealed that these novel systems present a high thermal, air and electrochemical stability as well as low optical and electronic energy gap values with a significant redshift of the absorption maximum in the UV-Vis spectra and predicted remarkably higher first hyperpolarizabilities compared to their organic counterparts. Therefore, the combination of a metallaaromatic system with a spirobifluorene moiety leads to the design and development of new spirobifluorene derivatives. These new systems have shown interesting optical and electronic properties making them of interest for future applications in optoelectronics.

Competing C-H and C-F bond activation reactions of a fluorinated olefin at Rh: a fluorido vinylidene complex as an intermediate in an unprecedented dehydrofluorination step. Abstract
The hydrofluoroolefin Z-1,3,3,3-tetrafluoropropene has been activated via an initial C-F bond activation and subsequent C-H bond activation using [Rh(H)(PEt3)3] (1) or via C-H bond activation at [Rh(CH3)(PEt3)3] (8). In both cases the formation of [Rh{(E)-CF[double bond, length as m-dash]CHCF3}(PEt3)3] (3) was observed. Importantly, the C-F activation product [Rh{(E)-CH[double bond, length as m-dash]CHCF3}(PEt3)3] (2) reacts in the presence of Z-1,3,3,3-tetrafluoropropene into 3. The latter converted into [Rh(C[triple bond, length as m-dash]CCF3)(PEt3)3] (6) by an unprecedented dehydrofluorination reaction, presumably via a vinylidene complex as intermediate. When the carbonyl complex [Rh(C[triple bond, length as m-dash]CCF3)(CO)(PEt3)3] (12) was treated with an excess of NEt3·3HF or HBF4 at low temperature, the formation of the phosphonioalkenyl compounds [Rh{(Z)-C(PEt3)[double bond, length as m-dash]CHCF3}(CO)(PEt3)2]X (X = F(HF) x , BF4) (13) was observed. The formation of 13 can be explained by an attack of PEt3 at the electrophilic α-carbon atom of an intermediate vinylidene complex. The employment of PiPr3 derivatives as model compounds allowed for the isolation of the unique fluorido vinylidene complex trans-[Rh(F)([double bond, length as m-dash]C[double bond, length as m-dash]CHCF3)(PiPr3)2] (16), which in the presence of PEt3 transforms into [Rh(C[triple bond, length as m-dash]CCF3)(PEt3)3] (6).

Abstract
The electron-rich Pt complex [Pt(IMes)2 ] (IMes: [1,3-bis(2,4,6-trimethylphenyl)-2-imidazolinylidine]) can be used as precursor for the syntheses of a variety of fluorido ligand containing compounds. The sulfur fluoride SF4 undergoes a rapid oxidative addition at Pt0 to yield trans-[Pt(F)(SF3 )(IMes)2 ]. A photolytic reaction of SF6 at [Pt(IMes)2 ] in the presence of IMes gave the fluorido complexes trans-[Pt(F)2 (IMes)2 ] and trans-[Pt(F)(SF3 )(IMes)2 ] along with trans-[Pt(F)(SOF)(IMes)2 ] and trans-[Pt(F)(IMes')(IMes)] (IMes': cyclometalated IMes ligand), the latter being products produced by reaction with adventitious water. trans-[Pt(F)(SOF)(IMes)2 ] and trans-[Pt(F)2 (IMes)2 ] were synthesized independently by treatment of [Pt(IMes)2 ] with SOF2 or XeF2 . A reaction of [Pt(IMes)2 ] with a HF source gave trans-[Pt(H)(F)(IMes)2 ], and an intermediate bifluorido complex trans-[Pt(H)(FHF)(IMes)2 ] was identified. Compound trans-[Pt(H)(F)(IMes)2 ] converts in the presence of CsF into trans-[Pt(F)(IMes')(IMes)].

Abstract
The reaction of the rhodium(I) complexes [Rh(E)(PEt3)3] (E=GePh3 (1), H (6), F (7)) with 1,1,3,3,3‐pentafluoropropene afforded the defluorinative germylation products Z/E‐2‐(triphenylgermyl)‐1,3,3,3‐tetrafluoropropene and the fluorido complex [Rh(F)(CF3CHCF2)(PEt3)2] (2) together with the fluorophosphorane E‐(CF3)CH=CF(PFEt3). For [Rh(Si(OEt)3)(PEt3)3] (4) the coordination of the fluoroolefin was found to give [Rh{Si(OEt)3}(CF3CHCF2)(PEt3)2] (5). Two equivalents of complex 2 reacted further by C−F bond oxidative addition to yield [Rh(CF=CHCF3)(PEt3)2(μ‐F)3Rh(CF3CHCF2)(PEt3)] (9). The role of the fluorido ligand on the reactivity of complex 2 was assessed by comparison with the analogous chlorido complex. The use of complexes 1, 4 and 6 as catalysts for the derivatization of 1,1,3,3,3‐pentafluoropropene provided products, which were generated by hydrodefluorination, hydrometallation and germylation reactions.

Key factors in the synthesis of polycyclic iridaaromatics via the methoxyalkenylcarbene pathway. Dalton Trans 2021; 50:11216-11220. Abstract
Polycyclic iridaaromatic compounds are of great interest not only because of the contributions made in "aromatic chemistry", but also because of the possibility of improving the results of the applications of the corresponding organic analogues in different fields. Therefore, understanding the requirements necessary to build on demand this type of compound with specific properties is of great importance. In this work, the keys to successfully synthesize iridaaromatic complexes via methoxyalkenylcarbenes are established. Experimental and theoretical results show (i) that bearing two aromatic substituents on the gamma carbon of the methoxyalkylcarbene promotes the C-H bond activation; (ii) the need for large steric hindrance of the second substituent for a selective synthesis and, (iii) the selectivity in the C-H bond activation towards the less sterically hindered system.

The role of lateral and vertical herkogamy in the divergence of the blue- and red-flowered lineages of Lysimachia arvensis. ANNALS OF BOTANY 2020; 125:1127-1135. Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Herkogamy, or anther-stigma separation, is known to reduce self-pollen deposition, but little is known about the relative efficacy of different modes or conformations of herkogamy. We assessed the effectiveness of vertical versus lateral herkogamy in preventing or promoting self-pollen deposition in the annual herb Lysimachia arvensis, a plant with lineages that differ in flower colour, and in which flowers first display lateral and then vertical herkogamy. Because mating between the two lineages compromises fitness through the production of low-quality hybrid offspring, we tested the prediction that individuals sampled from sites occupied by both lineages should have flowers that promote autonomous self-pollen deposition and self-fertilization as a result of selection to reduce deleterious reproductive interference. METHODS We characterized variation in herkogamy within and among 25 pure and mixed populations of L. arvensis in its European range and assessed the effectiveness of lateral versus vertical herkogamy in avoiding self-pollen deposition. RESULTS Lateral herkogamy was more effective than vertical herkogamy in limiting self-pollen deposition. In the case of vertical herkogamy, only approach herkogamy was effective. Lineages showed consistent differences in herkogamy traits. In general, angles were smaller for blue than red flowers in most populations, and blue flowers showed approach herkogamy, while red flowers showed predominantly reverse herkogamy. In sympatry, the red lineage showed a reduction of both herkogamy traits while for the blue lineage only lateral herkogamy was reduced. CONCLUSIONS Our results demonstrate that pollen deposition is affected not only by the degree but also the spatial conformation of herkogamy. They also highlight reduced herkogamy as a potential mechanism for promoting reproductive assurance under pollen limitation, as well as for avoiding reproductive interference between genetically divergent lineages.

The reaction of the rhodium(i) complexes [Rh(E)(PEt3)3] (E = GePh3 (1), Si(OEt)3 (5)) with HFO-1234yf (2,3,3,3-tetrafluoropropene) afforded [Rh(F)(PEt3)3] (2) and the functionalized olefins Z-CF3CH[double bond, length as m-dash]CH(E) (E = GePh3 (4a), Si(OEt)3 (7)). Conceivable reaction pathways were assessed using DFT calculations. Reactions of [Rh(E)(PEt3)3] with HFO-1234ze (E-1,3,3,3-tetrafluoropropene) yielded the rhodium fluorido complex 2 and [Rh{(E)-CH[double bond, length as m-dash]CH(CF3)}(PEt3)3] (9) via two different reaction pathways. Abstract
The rhodium(i) complexes [Rh(Bpin)(PEt3)3] (1), [Rh(H)(PEt3)3] (5) and [Rh(Me)(PEt3)3] (14) were employed in reactions with pentafluorostyrene affording coordination of the olefin and C-F or C-H bond activation. Control of the reaction conditions allowed for selective activation reactions at different positions at the fluorinated aromatic ring. The rhodacycle trans-[Rh(F)(CH2CH2(2-C6F4))(PEt3)2] (7) was identified as an intermediate for an activation at the 2-position. Reactivity studies of the latter with CO led to the generation of trans-[Rh(F)(CH2CH2C6F4)(CO)(PEt3)2] (10). Stoichiometric and catalytic hydroboration reactions were achieved using complexes 1 or 5 as catalysts.

Abstract
Spirobifluorene derivatives find use in many end-user applications. Therefore, further expansion of their scope is the focus of many research studies. However, although the optical properties of spirobifluorenes can be greatly tuned through incorporation of metal complexes, to date, spirobifluorene metallaaromatics remain unknown. Taking advantage of the versatility of our methodology for the synthesis of metallaaromatic systems, this work reports the first metallaaromatic spirobifluorene compound. The presence of an Ir atom was found to redshift the absorption maximum by ca. 1.1 eV compared to bare spirobifluorene. Additionally, X-ray analysis as well as anisotropy of the current-induced density calculations revealed this compound to be of aromatic nature. The high stability in solution, solid state, under air, and at high temperature, as well as distinct optical properties of this new class of compounds are expected to open new frontiers for chiroptical and optoelectronic applications.

Abstract
The reaction of [Rh(H)(PEt3 )3 ] (1) with the refrigerant HFO-1234yf (2,3,3,3-tetrafluoropropene) affords an efficient route to obtain [Rh(F)(PEt3 )3 ] (3) by C-F bond activation. Catalytic hydrodefluorinations were achieved in the presence of the silane HSiPh3 . In the presence of a fluorosilane, 3 provides a C-H bond activation followed by a 1,2-fluorine shift to produce [Rh{(E)-C(CF3 )=CHF}(PEt3 )3 ] (4). Similar rearrangements of HFO-1234yf were observed at [Rh(E)(PEt3 )3 ] [E=Bpin (6), C7 D7 (8), Me (9)]. The ability to favor C-H bond activation using 3 and fluorosilane is also demonstrated with 3,3,3-trifluoropropene. Studies are supported by DFT calculations.

Abstract
Fungal endophytes comprise one of the most ubiquitous groups of plant symbionts. They live asymptomatically within vascular plants, bryophytes and also in close association with algal photobionts inside lichen thalli. While endophytic diversity in land plants has been well studied, their diversity in lichens and bryophytes are poorly understood. Here, we compare the endolichenic and endophytic fungal communities isolated from lichens and bryophytes in the Barton Peninsula, King George Island, Antarctica. A total of 93 fungal isolates were collected from lichens and bryophytes. In order to determine their identities and evolutionary relationships, DNA sequences of the nuclear internal transcribed spacer (ITS), nuclear ribosomal small subunit (nuSSU), nuclear large subunit (nuLSU), and mitochondrial SSU (mtSSU) rDNA were obtained and protein coding markers of the two largest subunit of RNA polymerase II (RPB1 and RPB2) were generated. Multilocus phylogenetic analyses revealed that most of the fungal isolates were distributed in the following six classes in the phylum Ascomycota: Dothideomycetes, Eurotiomycetes, Lecanoromycetes, Leotiomycetes, Pezizomycetes and Sordariomycetes. For the first time we report the presence of subphylum Mortierellomycotina that may belong to an undescribed order in endophytic fungi. Taken together, our results imply that lichens and bryophytes provide similar niches and harbour a selection of these fungi, indicating generalists within the framework of evolutionary adaptation.

Abstract
A methoxy(alkenyl)carbenerhodium complex [RhCp*Cl{[double bond, length as m-dash]C(OMe)CH[double bond, length as m-dash]CPh2}(PMe3)]PF6 (2) has been synthesized and used as the starting material for the study of the effect of the metal center (Rh vs. Ir) in the formation of new rhodacycle complexes. While η3 and η5 indenylrhodium complexes have been achieved by the C-H bond activation of a phenyl ring, insertion of terminal alkynes into the rhodium-carbene bond led to the first example of the synthesis of rhodafuran complexes through rhoda-1,3,5-hexatriene intermediates. This new method represents an efficient process to obtain metallafuran complexes.

Enteric serotonin and oxytocin: endogenous regulation of severity in a murine model of necrotizing enterocolitis. Am J Physiol Gastrointest Liver Physiol 2017; 313:G386-G398. Abstract
Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), a gastrointestinal inflammatory disease of unknown etiology that may also affect the liver, causes a great deal of morbidity and mortality in premature infants. We tested the hypothesis that signaling molecules, which are endogenous to the bowel, regulate the severity of intestinal and hepatic damage in an established murine NEC model. Specifically, we postulated that mucosal serotonin (5-HT), which is proinflammatory, would exacerbate experimental NEC and that oxytocin (OT), which is present in enteric neurons and is anti-inflammatory, would oppose it. Genetic deletion of the 5-HT transporter (SERT), which increases and prolongs effects of 5-HT, was found to increase the severity of systemic manifestations, intestinal inflammation, and associated hepatotoxicity of experimental NEC. In contrast, genetic deletion of tryptophan hydroxylase 1 (TPH1), which is responsible for 5-HT biosynthesis in enterochromaffin (EC) cells of the intestinal mucosa, and TPH inhibition with LP-920540 both decrease the severity of experimental NEC in the small intestine and liver. These observations suggest that 5-HT from EC cells helps to drive the inflammatory damage to the gut and liver that occurs in the murine NEC model. Administration of OT decreased, while the OT receptor antagonist atosiban exacerbated, the intestinal inflammation of experimental NEC. Data from the current investigation are consistent with the tested hypotheses-that the enteric signaling molecules, 5-HT (positively) and OT (negatively) regulate severity of inflammation in a mouse model of NEC. Moreover, we suggest that mucosally restricted inhibition of 5-HT biosynthesis and/or administration of OT may be useful in the treatment of NEC.NEW & NOTEWORTHY Serotonin (5-HT) and oxytocin reciprocally regulate the severity of intestinal inflammation and hepatotoxicity in a murine model of necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC). Selective depletion of mucosal 5-HT through genetic deletion or inhibition of tryptophan hydroxylase-1 ameliorates, while deletion of the 5-HT uptake transporter, which increases 5-HT availability, exacerbates the severity of NEC. In contrast, oxytocin reduces, while the oxytocin receptor antagonist atosiban enhances, NEC severity. Peripheral tryptophan hydroxylase inhibition may be useful in treatment of NEC.

Uncertain pollination environment promotes the evolution of a stable mixed reproductive system in the self-incompatible Hypochaeris salzmanniana (Asteraceae). ANNALS OF BOTANY 2017; 120:447-456. [PMID: 28911017 PMCID: PMC5591423 DOI: 10.1093/aob/mcx059] [Citation(s) in RCA: 7] [Impact Index Per Article: 1.0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [MESH Headings] [Track Full Text] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 10/30/2016] [Revised: 01/12/2017] [Indexed: 06/02/2023]
Abstract
Background and aims The transition from outcrossing to selfing is a repeated pattern in angiosperm diversification and according to general theory this transition should occur quickly and mixed reproductive systems should be infrequent. However, a large proportion of flowering plants have mixed reproductive systems, even showing inbreeding depression. Recently, several theoretical studies have shown that mixed mating systems can be stable, but empirical studies supporting these assumptions are still scarce. Methods Hypochaeris salzmanniana, an annual species with populations differing in their self-incompatibility expression, was used as a study case to assess the stability of its mixed reproductive system. Here a descriptive study of the pollination environment was combined with measurements of the stability of the self-incompatibility system, outcrossing rate, reproductive assurance and inbreeding depression in four populations for two consecutive years. Key Results The reproductive system of populations exhibited a geographical pattern: the proportion of plants decreased from west to east. Pollinator environment also varied geographically, being less favourable from west to east. The self-incompatibility expression of some populations changed markedly in only one year. After selfing, progeny was mainly self-compatible, while after outcrossing both self-incompatible and self-compatible plants were produced. In general, both reproductive assurance and high inbreeding depression were found in all populations and years. The lowest values of inbreeding depression were found in 2014 in the easternmost populations, which experienced a marked increase in self-compatibility in 2015. Conclusions The mixed reproductive system of H. salzmanniana seems to be an evolutionarily stable strategy, with selfing conferring reproductive assurance when pollinator attendance is low, but strongly limited by inbreeding depression. The fact that the highest frequencies of self-compatible plants appeared in the environments most unfavourable to pollination suggests that these plants are selected in these sites, although high rates of inbreeding depression should impede the complete loss of self-incompatibility. In H. salzmanniana, year-to-year changes in the frequency of self-incompatible individuals are directly derived from the balance between reproductive assurance and inbreeding depression.

Abstract
Iridanaphthalene complexes are synthesized from the corresponding methoxy(alkenyl)carbeneiridium compounds. The electronic character of the substituents on the 6-position of the metallanaphthalene ring is crucial from the point of view of the stability of the iridanaphthalene, [Ir[upper bond 1 start]Cp*{=C(OMe)CH=C(o-C[upper bond 1 end]6H4)(Ph)}(PMe3)]PF6, vs. its transformation to the corresponding indanone derivatives. Stability studies of the iridanaphthalene compounds revealed that strong electron donor substituents (-OMe) stabilize the iridanaphthalene, while weak electron donor (-Me) and electron withdrawing (-NO2) groups favor the formation of indanone derivatives. Two possible indanone isomers can be obtained in the conversion of the unstable iridanaphthalene complexes and a mechanism for the formation of these isomers is proposed.

Abstract
The effectiveness of a combination of soil solarization and poultry manure (raw or pelletized) amendments for the control of root-knot nematode (Meloidogyne incognita) was tested in carnation (Dianthus caryophyllus) crops grown in in-ground beds under plastic-covered greenhouse conditions in southern Spain. Our trials demonstrated that soil solarization alone did not provide sufficient control of root-knot nematode, because the carnation growing season in this region only partly coincides with the most effective period for solarization, resulting in an insufficient duration of treatment during a key period for effectiveness. Chemical fumigation with 1,3-dichloropropene + chloropicrin prior to planting was effective in reducing nematode population densities in soil. Its effects spanned 9 months after planting, resulting in acceptable crop yields. In comparison, the combination of soil solarization and raw or pelletized poultry manure was slightly less effective than chemical fumigation for control of this pathogen but crop yields after 9 months were similar. However, the higher root gall indices observed after 9 months, in comparison with chemically fumigated plots, indicated the need for a reapplication of the organic manure treatment at the start of each successive growing season.

Molecular phylogeny and systematics of the highly polymorphic Rumex bucephalophorus complex (Polygonaceae). Mol Phylogenet Evol 2011; 61:659-70. Abstract
Rumex bucephalophorus is a very polymorphic species that has been subjected to various taxonomic studies in which diverse infraspecific taxa have been recognised on the basis of diaspore traits. In this study we used molecular markers (ITS and AFLP) to explore this remarkable diversity, to test previous hypotheses of classification, and attempt to explain biogeographic patterns. Results show that R. bucephalophorus forms a monophyletic group in which diversification began around 4.2 Mya, at the end of Messinian Salinity Crisis. The two molecular markers clearly show a deep divergence separating subsp. bucephalophorus from all other subspecific taxa, among which subsp. canariensis also constitutes a separate and well distinguishable unit. In contrast, subspecies hispanicus and subsp. gallicus constitute a monophyletic group in which three subgroups can be recognised: subsp. hispanicus, subsp. gallicus var. gallicus and subsp. gallicus var. subaegeus. However, these three subgroups are not clearly distinguished genetically or morphologically, so that in formal classification it would be preferable to treat them at the varietal level.

Chromosome fragility in patients with Fanconi anaemia: diagnostic implications and clinical impact. J Med Genet 2011; 48:242-50. Abstract
BACKGROUND Fanconi anaemia (FA) is a rare syndrome characterized by bone marrow failure, malformations and cancer predisposition. Chromosome fragility induced by DNA interstrand crosslink (ICL)-inducing agents such as diepoxybutane (DEB) or mitomycin C (MMC) is the 'gold standard' test for the diagnosis of FA. OBJECTIVE To study the variability, the diagnostic implications and the clinical impact of chromosome fragility in FA. METHODS Data are presented from 198 DEB-induced chromosome fragility tests in patients with and without FA where information on genetic subtype, cell sensitivity to MMC and clinical data were available. RESULTS This large series allowed quantification of the variability and the level of overlap in ICL sensitivity among patients with FA and the normal population. A new chromosome fragility index is proposed that provides a cut-off diagnostic level to unambiguously distinguish patients with FA, including mosaics, from non-FA individuals. Spontaneous chromosome fragility and its correlation with DEB-induced fragility was also analysed, indicating that although both variables are correlated, 54% of patients with FA do not have spontaneous fragility. The data reveal a correlation between malformations and sensitivity to ICL-inducing agents. This correlation was also statistically significant when the analysis was restricted to patients from the FA-A complementation group. Finally, chromosome fragility does not correlate with the age of onset of haematological disease. CONCLUSIONS This study proposes a new chromosome fragility index and suggests that genome instability during embryo development may be related to malformations in FA, while DEB-induced chromosome breaks in T cells have no prognostic value for the haematological disease.

Abstract
In the present study, the hemagglutinating activity of seven reference strains, and nine Mexican and three Danish field isolates, of Gallibacterium was investigated by using fresh erythrocytes of 19 different types including chicken (broiler, rooster, layer hen), turkey, pigeon, quail, duck, Harris's hawk (Parabuteo unicinctus), house finch (Carpodacus mexicanus), cow, sheep, horse, dog, rabbit, pig, and human (groups A, B, AB, and O; Rh+). Agglutination was observed for broiler chicken, layer hen, quail, rabbit, and pig erythrocytes with a subset of Gallibacterium strains, whereas most tested strains agglutinated rabbit erythrocytes. Transmission electron microscopic examination of a hemagglutinating strain demonstrated a close interaction between the bacterial and erythrocyte surfaces. The results indicate that some Gallibacterium strains are able to agglutinate avian or mammalian erythrocytes, or both. However, the mechanisms enabling hemagglutination are not known and will be addressed in future studies.

Abstract
A new species of Tylenchorhynchus Cobb, 1913 from Paraguay, T. shimizui n. sp., and T. leviterminalis Siddiqi, Mukherjee & Dasgupta, 1982 from Japan are described and illustrated. T. shimizui n. sp. is a monosexual species characterised by females with a medium-sized body, L=0.70-0.82 mm, stylet 18.4-20.8 microm long, a rounded lip region slightly set off from the body contours bearing six annules, oesophageal glands slightly overlapping the intestine laterally and a subcylindrical tail with a bluntly pointed smooth terminus. A population of T. leviterminalis associated with sugarcane from Japan is also described and compared with previous descriptions. This is the first record for T. leviterminalis in Japan. Spores of a Pasteuria species were observed filling the body-cavity of some specimens of T. leviterminalis.

Abstract
This study reports on a girl with a permanent cerebral lesion and opercular syndrome after status epilepticus (SE). She had previously been healthy and had her first focal motor seizure at 5 years of age, which was controlled with intravenous phenytoin and rectal diazepam. Twenty-four hours later, she developed partial SE consisting of right facial twitching and right-hand clonic movements. These uncontrollable seizures lasted for 5 days, after which the partial SE changed to generalized SE, and the seizures continued for another 5 days. CT performed the day before onset of SE revealed no brain abnormality. Another CT performed a year later disclosed bilateral brain lesions, more severe in the left hemisphere. Follow up at 16 years of age revealed moderate motor sequelae of the right-hand side of the body, anarthria, difficulty chewing, dysphagia, bilateral facial weakness, and drooling, all of which clinically characterize opercular syndrome. An MRI study performed at 14 years of age showed a cerebral parenchymatous lesion which extended between the parietal cortices of both hemispheres, more severe on the left side, and which crossed the corpus callosum, destroying the posterior-middle zone. Evidence from the CT indicates that the lesion was not present before onset of SE. It seems likely that the focal SE caused the focal brain damage, but the possibility that the subsequent generalized SE played a role cannot be excluded.

Abstract
Some males of the grasshopper Chorthippus binotatus from a natural population in Sierra Nevada (Granada, Spain) were found to be polysomic mosaics for the presence of extra chromosomes (E) in a high proportion of testicular follicles. Transmission analysis of these chromosomes was performed in 21 controlled crosses, 2 of which involved a polysomic parent. While most spermatozoa produced by polysomic males carried E chromosomes, these chromosomes were not transmitted to the progeny, since all 22 embryos descended from a polysomic male parent lacked them.Key words: transmission, polysomy, grasshopper, Chorthippus binotatus.
