Abstract
It has been suggested that actions can provide a fruitful conceptual context for sound symbolism phenomena, and that tight interaction between manual and articulatory processes might cause that hand actions, in particular, are sound-symbolically associated with specific speech sounds. Experiment 1 investigated whether novel words, built from speech sounds that have been previously linked to precision or power grasp responses, are implicitly associated with perceived actions that present precision manipulation or whole-hand grasp tool-use or the corresponding utilisation pantomimes. In the two-alternative forced-choice task, the participants were more likely to match novel words to tool-use actions and corresponding pantomimes that were sound-symbolically congruent with the words. Experiment 2 showed that the same or even larger sound-action symbolism effect can be observed when the pantomimes present unfamiliar utilisation actions. Based on this we propose that the sound-action symbolism might originate from the same sensorimotor mechanisms that process the meaning of iconic gestural signs. The study presents a novel sound-action phenomenon and supports the view that hand-mouth interaction might manifest itself by associating specific speech sounds with grasp-related utilisations.

Abstract
Previous investigations have shown various interactions between spatial concepts and speech sounds. For instance, the front-high vowel [i] is associated with the concept of forward, and the back-high vowel [o] is associated with the concept of backward. Three experiments investigated whether the concepts of forward/front and backward/back are associated with high- and low-pitched vocalizations, respectively, in Finnish. In Experiments 1 and 2, the participants associated the high-pitched vocalization with the forward-directed movement and the low-pitched vocalizations with the backward-directed movement. In Experiment 3, the same effect was observed in relation to the concepts of front of and back of. We propose that these observations present a novel sound-space symbolism phenomenon in which spatial concepts of forward/front and backward/back are iconically associated with high- and low-pitched speech sounds. This observation is discussed in relation to the grounding of semantic knowledge of these spatial concepts in the movements of articulators such as relative front/back-directed movements of the tongue.

Abstract
Due to the dramatic difference in spatial resolution between the central fovea and the surrounding retinal regions, accurate fixation on important objects is critical for humans. It is known that the preferred retinal location (PRL) for fixation of healthy human observers rarely coincides with the retinal location with the highest cone density. It is not currently known, however, whether the PRL is consistent within an observer or is subject to fluctuations and, moreover, whether observers' subjective fixation location coincides with the PRL. We studied whether the PRL changes between days. We used an adaptive optics scanning laser ophthalmoscope to project a Maltese cross fixation target on an observer's retina and continuously imaged the exact retinal location of the target. We found that observers consistently use the same PRL across days, regardless of how much the PRL is displaced from the cone density peak location. We then showed observers small stimuli near the visual field location on which they fixated, and the observers judged whether or not the stimuli appeared in fixation. Observers' precision in this task approached that of fixation itself. Observers based their judgment on both the visual scene coordinates and the retinal location of the stimuli. We conclude that the PRL in a normally functioning visual system is fixed, and observers use it as a reference point in judging stimulus locations.

Abstract
The eye and mouth regions serve as the primary sources of facial information regarding an individual's emotional state. The aim of this study was to provide a comprehensive assessment of the relative importance of those two information sources in the identification of different emotions. The stimuli were composite facial images, in which different expressions (Neutral, Anger, Disgust, Fear, Happiness, Contempt, and Surprise) were presented in the eyes and the mouth. Participants (21 women, 11 men, mean age 25 years) rated the expressions of 7 congruent and 42 incongruent composite faces by clicking on a point within the valence-arousal emotion space. Eye movements were also monitored. With most incongruent composite images, the perceived emotion corresponded to the expression of either the eye region or the mouth region or an average of those. The happy expression was different. Happy eyes often shifted the perceived emotion towards a slightly negative point in the valence-arousal space, not towards the location associated with a congruent happy expression. The eye-tracking data revealed significant effects of congruency, expressions and interaction on total dwell time. Our data indicate that whether a face that combines features from two emotional expressions leads to a percept based on only one of the expressions (categorical perception) or integration of the two expressions (dimensional perception), or something altogether different, strongly depends upon the expressions involved.

Abstract
People use eye movements extremely effectively to find objects of interest in a cluttered visual scene. Distracting, task-irrelevant attention capturing regions in the visual field should be avoided as they jeopardize the efficiency of search. In the current study, we used eye tracking to determine whether people are able to avoid making saccades to a predetermined visual area associated with a financial penalty, while making fast and accurate saccades towards stimuli placed near the penalty area. We found that in comparison to the same task without a penalty area, the introduction of a penalty area immediately affected eye movement behaviour: the proportion of saccades to the penalty area was immediately reduced. Also, saccadic latencies increased, but quite modestly, and mainly for saccades towards stimuli near the penalty area. We conclude that eye movement behaviour is under efficient cognitive control and thus quite flexible: it can immediately be adapted to changing environmental conditions to improve reward outcome.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIM Monitoring of lung function alone does not adequately identify the high-risk patients among elderly asthma and COPD cohorts. The additional value of Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQoL) development in the detection of patients with a disabling disease in clinical practice is unclear. The aim of this study was to statistically examine the individual development of HRQoL measured using respiratory-specific AQ20 and generic 15D questionnaires. MATERIALS AND METHODS The HRQoL of COPD (N = 739) and asthma (N = 1329) patients was evaluated at 0, 1, 2, and 4 years after recruitment. To determine a five-year HRQoL change for each patient we used mixed-effects modelling for linear trend. RESULTS In COPD, the majority (60-80%) of the individuals showed declining trend, whereas in asthma, the majority (46-71%) showed no attenuation in HRQoL. The proportion of constant decliners was estimated higher with the 15D both in asthma (6.3%) and COPD (6.3%) than with AQ20 (3.5 and 4.5%, respectively). The first measurement of HRQoL was found to predict future development of HRQoL. In asthma, obesity-related diseases such as hypertension, diabetes and gastro-esophageal reflux disease best explained the decline, whereas in COPD, age and the level of bronchial obstruction were the main determinants. CONCLUSION Based on the five-year follow-up, the HRQoL trends significantly diverging from each other could be identified both among the asthma and COPD patients. Compared to cross-sectional HRQoL, the HRQoL trend over a clinically relevant period of time allows us to ignore, to a great extent, the random error of self-assessed HRQoL and thus, it may offer a more accurate measure to describe the disease process.

Abstract
In normal human visual behavior, our visual system is continuously exposed to abrupt changes in the local contrast and mean luminance in various parts of the visual field, as caused by actual changes in the environment, as well as by movements of our body, head, and eyes. Previous research has shown that both threshold and suprathreshold contrast percepts are attenuated by a co-occurring change in the mean luminance at the location of the target stimulus. In the current study, we tested the hypothesis that contrast targets presented with a co-occurring change in local mean luminance receive fewer fixations than targets presented in a region with a steady mean luminance. To that end we performed an eye-tracking experiment involving eight observers. On each trial, after a 4 s adaptation period, an observer's task was to make a saccade to one of two target gratings, presented simultaneously at 7° eccentricity, separated by 30° in polar angle. When both targets were presented with a steady mean luminance, saccades landed mostly in the area between the two targets, signifying the classic global effect. However, when one of the targets was presented with a change in luminance, the saccade distribution was biased towards the target with the steady luminance. The results show that the attenuation of contrast signals by co-occurring, ecologically typical changes in mean luminance affects fixation selection and is therefore likely to affect eye movements in natural visual behavior.

Abstract
A visual stimulus activates different sized cortical area depending on eccentricity of the stimulus. Here, our aim is to understand whether the visual field size of a stimulus or cortical size of the corresponding representation determines how strongly it interacts with other stimuli. We measured surround modulation of blood-oxygenation-level-dependent signal and perceived contrast with surrounds that extended either towards the periphery or the fovea from a center stimulus, centered at 6° eccentricity. This design compares the effects of two surrounds which are identical in visual field size, but differ in the sizes of their cortical representations. The surrounds produced equally strong suppression, which suggests that visual field size of the surround determines suppression strength. A modeled population of neuronal responses, in which all the parameters were experimentally fixed, captured the pattern of results both in psychophysics and functional magnetic resonance imaging. Although the fovea-periphery anisotropy affects nearly all aspects of spatial vision, our results suggest that in surround modulation the visual system compensates for it.

Abstract
The percept of a contrast target is substantially affected by co-occurring changes in mean luminance or underlying ("pedestal") contrast elements. These two types of modulatory effects have traditionally been studied as separate phenomena. However, regardless of different higher-level mechanisms, both classes of phenomena will necessarily also depend on shared mechanisms in the first stages of vision, starting with the primary responses of photoreceptors. Here we present model simulations showing that important aspects of both classes may be explained by the temporal dynamics of photoreceptor responses read by integrate-and-fire operators. The model is physiologically justified and all its parameters are constrained by experimental evidence. Although there remains plenty of room for additional mechanisms to shape the exact quantitative realization of the perceptual functions in different situations, we suggest that signature features may be inherited from primary retinal signaling.

Abstract
Background When we are viewing natural scenes, every saccade abruptly changes both the mean luminance and the contrast structure falling on any given retinal location. Thus it would be useful if the two were independently encoded by the visual system, even when they change simultaneously. Recordings from single neurons in the cat visual system have suggested that contrast information may be quite independently represented in neural responses to simultaneous changes in contrast and luminance. Here we test to what extent this is true in human perception. Methodology/Principal Findings Small contrast stimuli were presented together with a 7-fold upward or downward step of mean luminance (between 185 and 1295 Td, corresponding to 14 and 98 cd/m2), either simultaneously or with various delays (50–800 ms). The perceived contrast of the target under the different conditions was measured with an adaptive staircase method. Over the contrast range 0.1–0.45, mainly subtractive attenuation was found. Perceived contrast decreased by 0.052±0.021 (N = 3) when target onset was simultaneous with the luminance increase. The attenuation subsided within 400 ms, and even faster after luminance decreases, where the effect was also smaller. The main results were robust against differences in target types and the size of the field over which luminance changed. Conclusions/Significance Perceived contrast is attenuated mainly by a subtractive term when coincident with a luminance change. The effect is of ecologically relevant magnitude and duration; in other words, strict contrast constancy must often fail during normal human visual behaviour. Still, the relative robustness of the contrast signal is remarkable in view of the limited dynamic response range of retinal cones. We propose a conceptual model for how early retinal signalling may allow this.

Abstract
Contextual modulation is a fundamental feature of sensory processing, both on perceptual and on single-neuron level. When the diameter of a visual stimulus is increased, the firing rate of a cell typically first increases (summation field) and then decreases (surround field). Such an area summation function draws a comprehensive profile of the receptive field structure of a neuron, including areas outside the classical receptive field. We investigated area summation in human vision with psychophysics and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). The stimuli were drifting sine wave gratings similar to those used in previous macaque single-cell area summation studies [corrected]. A model was developed to facilitate comparison of area summation in fMRI to area summation in psychophysics and single cells. The model consisted of units with an antagonistic receptive field structure found in single cells in the primary visual cortex. The receptive field centers of the model neurons were distributed in the region of the visual field covered by a single voxel. The measured area summation functions were qualitatively similar to earlier single-cell data. The model with parameters derived from psychophysics captured the spatial structure of the summation field in the primary visual cortex as measured with fMRI. The model also generalized to a novel situation in which the neural population was displaced from the stimulus center. The current study shows that contextual modulation arises from similar spatially antagonistic and overlapping excitatory and inhibitory mechanisms, both in single cells and in human vision.

Abstract
The auditory sensory-memory mechanisms in the human brain were investigated using the mismatch negativity (MMN) component of the event-related potential. MMNs were recorded to stimuli deviating from the repetitive standard stimuli simultaneously either in one or two features (frequency, intensity). If the processing of these two features is independent of each other, the MMN to the double deviant should equal the sum of the MMNs elicited by the corresponding single deviants. The double-deviant MMNs were found to be additive at the electrode sites below the Sylvian fissure but not at the frontal scalp areas. The results suggest that the temporal subcomponent of MMN is additive whereas the frontal is non-additive. The pattern of results was similar in ignore and attend conditions, suggesting that the components were not attentionally modulated.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Food hypersensitivity (FH) is commonly suspected, especially among adults with atopic diseases. Symptoms of FH vary from oral allergy syndrome (OAS) to gastrointestinal, respiratory and systemic reactions. More data are needed regarding patient groups at risk for FH, and symptoms and foods responsible for the reactions. METHODS FH was studied in 286 Finnish university students. Four study groups were selected: subjects (i) with current atopic dermatitis (AD) with or without allergic rhinoconjunctivits (ARC) or asthma (n = 41); (ii) with past AD with or without ARC or asthma (n = 89); (iii) with ARC or asthma (n = 69); (iv) without clinically confirmed atopic disease (n = 87). A thorough clinical examination was performed with a questionnaire specifying adverse events to foods. In addition, IgE specific to five foods, and skin prick tests to four foods were determined. RESULTS FH was reported by 172 subjects (60.1%), more often by females (66.3%) than by males (47.9%) (P = 0.003). FH was most frequent among subjects with AD, among those with current AD in 73.2%, with past AD in 66.3%, and with ARC or asthma in 63.8%; 44.8% of subjects without any atopic disease reported FH. Kiwi fruit caused symptoms most frequently (38.4%), followed by milk (32.6%), apple (29.1%), tomato (27.9%), citrus fruits (25.0%), tree nuts (23.3%), and peanut (17.4%). A total of 720 separate symptoms to 25 food items were reported. OAS was most common (51.2%), followed by gastrointestinal symptoms (23.5%), worsening of AD (11.4%), urticaria (4.2%), rhinitis or conjunctivitis (5.7%) and asthma (4.0%). Severe reactions occurred in 3.5% (25/720). Negative IgE and skin prick test to foods predicted well negative history, but the value of positive test results was limited. CONCLUSIONS FH was reported most often by students with current AD and multiple atopic diseases. Severe reactions occurred especially in patients with ARC and asthma. After excluding lactose intolerance, milk hypersensitivity was frequently reported.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Farm environment in childhood may protect against sensitization, allergic rhinitis, and asthma. METHODS Subjects were obtained from 10 667 Finnish first-year university students who responded to a questionnaire survey on IgE-mediated diseases. Two random samples were selected from 1631 respondents in Turku: subjects with asthma or wheezing, and subjects without asthmatic symptoms. A total of 296 subjects (72%) participated. Skin prick tests (SPT), measurements of IgE-antibodies, methacholine challenge, and bronchodilation tests were performed. Weighted occurrence of current asthma and sensitization among students from "childhood farm" and "childhood nonfarm" environments were analyzed. RESULTS Current asthma was found in 3.1% of subjects with childhood farm environment, and in 12.4% with nonfarm environment (odds ratio (OR) 0.22; 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.07-0.70). There were fewer positive SPT to birch (8.3 vs. 24.2%, OR 0.28, 95% CI 0.07-1.15) and timothy pollen (12.6 vs. 30.3%, OR 0.33, 95% CI 0.09-1.20) among subjects with childhood farm environment, but more sensitization to house-dust mite (22.0 vs. 4.9%, OR 5.43, 95% CI 1.60-18.46). Sensitization to cat (RAST class >/= 3) was less common in subjects with farm compared to nonfarm environments in childhood (1.5 vs. 13.1%; OR 0.10, 95% CI 0.02-0.47). CONCLUSIONS Farm environment in childhood protects against adult asthma and sensitization-especially to cat-the most important asthma related allergen. In contrast, sensitization to house-dust mite was more common in farming subjects.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Psychosocial stress is known to aggravate asthma. Less is known about the impact of stressful life events on the expression of asthma and atopic disorders. OBJECTIVE To determine whether the onset of asthma, allergic rhinitis or conjunctivitis, and atopic dermatitis, are associated with stressful life events. METHODS A postal survey on risk factors for asthma and atopic diseases was carried out among 10 667 Finnish first-year university students aged 18-25 years. Stressful life events, (i) severe disease or death of a family member, and (ii) parental or personal conflicts, were retrospectively recorded during the preceding year, 1-5 years, 6-10 years, and more than 10 years prior to the survey response. In a case-control setting, conditional multiple logistic regression analysis was used to assess the temporal association between major stressful life events occurring during a period either preceding, concomitant or subsequent with subject's diagnoses. RESULTS Concomitant parental and personal conflicts increased the risk of asthma (OR 1.72, 95% CI 1.10-2.69) when adjusted by parental asthma, education and passive smoking at early age. Concomitant severe disease or death of mother, father or spouse (OR 1.52, 95% CI 1.09-2.16) and precedent parental and personal conflicts (OR 1.75, 95% CI 1.15-2.77) increased the risk of manifestation of allergic rhinoconjunctivitis when adjusted for parental atopic disease, education and passive smoking. Subjects' asthma and atopic dermatitis, but not allergic rhinoconjunctivitis, were related to excess of subsequent stressful life events. CONCLUSION An association between stressful life events and subjects' asthma, allergic rhinoconjunctivitis and atopic dermatitis is suggested.

Abstract
In two German studies household wood or coal stove use was negatively associated with atopic sensitization and allergic rhinitis in childhood. Wood stove heating is strongly related to 'traditional lifestyle and therefore subjected to confounding factors possibly yet not known. The study was conducted to study these factors and the independent impact of early exposure to wood stove heating on subsequent asthma and atopic disease. In a questionnaire survey among 10667 Finnish university students aged 18-25 years, we investigated the association between wood stove heating at age 0-6 years and asthma and allergies up to young adulthood. Adjustment was made for factors related to the heating system and atopic disorders by using multivariate regression. Unadjusted lifetime prevalence rates for physician-diagnosed asthma, allergic rhinoconjunctivitis, atopic dermatitis and self-reported wheezing were lower among subjects with wood stove heating compared to other heating systems. There was a significant negative association between childhood wood stove heating and allergic rhinitis or conjunctivitis in the univariate model (OR 0.61, 95% CI 0.61-0.91), but not for the other diseases. The significant association disappeared in the multivariate analysis after adjusting for various family indoor and outdoor (adjusted OR 0.96, 95% CI 0.77-1.20) factors. The association between wood stove heating and allergic rhinoconjunctivitis was mainly confounded by childhood residential environment, especially the farm environment. Farm environment was found to be the main confounding factor related to association between wood stove heating and asthma, and atopic diseases.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The relation between home dampness and respiratory symptoms among adults is well confirmed, but data on specific allergic diseases and respiratory infections is more limited. Individual factors that may enhance susceptibility to the effects of home dampness are mainly unknown. METHODS The association between home dampness and current physician diagnosed asthma, allergic rhinitis, allergic conjunctivitis, atopic dermatitis, common colds, and bacterial respiratory infections was studied in a questionnaire survey of 10 667 Finnish first year university students aged 18-25 years. The dampness categories analysed were visible mould and visible mould or damp stains or water damage during the last year. In multivariate analyses adjustment was made for parental education, active and passive smoking, type and place of residence, pets, and wall to wall carpets. The interaction effect of atopic heredity and dampness was investigated. RESULTS Visible mould or damp stains or water damage was reported by 15.0% of the respondents. In multivariate models there was a positive association between home dampness and current asthma, allergic rhinitis, and atopic dermatitis, as well as common colds > or =4 times per year and other respiratory infections, but not between home dampness and allergic conjunctivitis. The strongest association was found between exposure to visible mould and asthma (OR 2.21, 95% CI 1.48 to 3.28) and common colds (OR 1.49, 95% CI 1.18 to 1.87). The risk of current asthma in damp homes was highest among subjects with atopic heredity. CONCLUSIONS The risk of current asthma, allergic rhinitis, and atopic dermatitis was higher in damp homes. Of the respiratory infections, the risk of common colds was most clearly increased.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Epidemiologic data on asthma and allergies among adults are mainly based on questionnaires: this study validates the questions on asthma, allergic rhinitis, and conjunctivitis of a new Finnish questionnaire. METHODS To validate questions used in a country-wide study among university students aged 18-25 years, we examined 150 subjects who had ever reported asthma or wheezing, and 140 without asthma symptoms. Questions were validated in relation to current diseases including 1) symptoms detected during the preceding year at the physician's interview 2) objective measurements, such as methacholine challenge, skin prick tests, and specific IgE. Data were adjusted for original proportions of "asthmatics" and"nonasthmatics" in the questionnaire study. RESULTS Questions on "reported asthma" and "doctor-diagnosed asthma" had good positive predictive value (PPV) and specificity in diagnosing current asthma. The question on "attacks of shortness of breath with wheezing", and especially the question on "cough with wheezing" were most sensitive. Questions on "allergic nasal symptoms" and "allergic eye symptoms" that were "related to pollen or animals" were sensitive, but a further question on doctor's diagnosis yielded higher specificity and PPV. CONCLUSION Diagnosis-based questions were found suitable for risk-factor studies, because of their good specificity and PPV, and symptom-based questions for screening, because they were highest in sensitivity.

Abstract
Nickel allergy was studied in a sample of 1st-year university students starting their studies in 1995. A total of 296 subjects (72%) of 413 invited participated in the clinical examination, and 284, 96 male and 188 female, were patch tested (69%). A history of nickel sensitization was enquired for. Prick tests and serum specific IgE levels were determined. Occurrence of atopic dermatitis, hand eczema, and current exposure to metals were recorded. Nickel allergy was encountered in 39% of all female students, in 42% of females with pierced skin, and in 14% of females without pierced skin. The corresponding figures for males were 3%, 7% and 3%. In the multiple regression analysis, the risk factors for nickel allergy were female sex (OR 8.1, p<0.01), current metal exposure at examination (OR 4.1, p<0.01) and skin piercing (OR 3.6, p<0.05). Positive prick tests or elevated IgE levels to common allergens were not significantly associated with nickel allergy. In female students, the prevalence of nickel allergy has increased from 13% in 1986 to 39%. The prevalence among males has remained low at 3%. The results indicate that, in addition to skin piercing, current metal contacts are important risk factors for nickel allergy. This finding gives support to the EU Nickel Directive.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to determine whether daytime occupational exposure to extremely low frequency magnetic fields (MFs) suppresses nocturnal melatonin production. Sixty female volunteers were recruited. Thirty-nine worked in a garment factory, and 21 office workers served as a reference group. Exposure assessment was based on the type of sewing machine used and MF measurements around each type of machine. Eye-level MF flux density was used to classify the operators to higher (>1 microT) and lower (0.3-1 microT) exposure categories. A third group of factory workers had diverse MF exposures from other sources. The reference group had average exposure of about 0.15 microT. Urine samples were collected on Friday and Monday for three consecutive weeks. Melatonin production was assessed as urinary 6-hydroxymelatonin sulfate (6-OHMS) excretion. The ratio of Friday morning/Monday morning 6-OHMS was used to test the hypothesis that melatonin production is suppressed after 4 days of occupational MF exposure with significant recovery during the weekend. Possible chronic suppression of melatonin production was evaluated by studying exposure-related differences in the Friday values by multivariate regression analysis. The Monday/Friday ratios were close to 1.0, suggesting that there is no increase in melatonin production over the weekend. The average 6-OHMS excretion on Friday was lower among the factory workers than in the reference group, but no monotonous dose-response was observed. Multivariate regression analysis identified MF exposure, smoking, and age as significant explanatory variables associated with decreased 6-OHMS excretion.

Abstract
BACKGROUND A protective effect of infections in early life might explain the firmly reported finding of an inverse association between atopic disorders and large sibships. OBJECTIVE To study the effect of childhood farm, rural non-farm and urban environment, as well as family size and other factors on the occurrence of asthma, wheezing and atopic disorders up to young adulthood. METHODS Data on lifetime prevalence of physician-diagnosed asthma, allergic rhinitis and/or allergic conjunctivitis, atopic dermatitis, as well as self-reported episodic wheezing from 10 667 Finnish first-year university students aged 18-24 years were collected by a postal questionnaire. Associations of lifetime prevalence of the diseases with living on a farm, in a rural non-farm and urban environment during childhood were estimated by logistic regression analysis. Adjustment was made for potential confounding by gender, parental atopy, parental education, number of older siblings, day care outside the home and passive smoking. RESULTS The childhood farm environment independently reduced the risk for physician-diagnosed allergic rhinitis and/or allergic conjunctivitis (adjusted odds ratio 0.63, 95% CI 0.50-0.79, P < 0.001), and for diagnosed asthma and episodic wheezing analysed together (OR 0.71, 95% CI 0.54-0.93, P < 0.05), but not for atopic dermatitis during lifetime. Urban childhood environment did not show independent increased risk when compared with rural non-farm residence. The inverse association of sibship size with the occurrence of allergic rhinitis and/or allergic conjunctivitis was found among subjects with one (OR 0.86, 95% CI 0.77-0.96, P < 0.01) or at least four older siblings (OR 0.47, 95% CI 0.26-0.84, P < 0.05). CONCLUSION Childhood farm environment seems to have a protective effect against allergic rhinitis and/or conjunctivitis, and more weakly against asthma and wheezing irrespective of family size. Environmental exposure to immune modulating agents, such as environmental mycobacteria and actinomycetes, favouring manifestation of a nonatopic phenotype could explain the finding.

Abstract
The process time in chrome tannage in leather making, using an elastic compression cycle followed by irradiation by high-intensity ultrasound, is quite short lasting only a few minutes, compared with a process time of several hours in modern chrome tannage. After ultrasonic irradiation, samples were basified in 17 h in chrome liquor at a pH of 4.0 and the shrinkage temperature was measured. The determination of the efficiency for the chrome liquor penetrating into the hides can be based on the steepness of the shrinkage temperature-processing time curve. An approximate value of 20 degrees C min(-1) can be evaluated for the initial slope of the curve when elastic compression and high-intensity ultrasonic irradiation is used, and a processing time of 2 min is required in chrome liquor (plus 17 h basification and 24 h storage time) to obtain leather stable to boiling. Usually, hides are kept in chrome liquor for 2 h.
