Abstract
microRNAs (miRNAs) are small, single-stranded, non-coding RNA molecules that regulate post-transcriptional gene expression. Accumulating evidence suggests their involvement in regulating various biological and pathological processes, including inflammation. Studies have revealed distinct expression patterns of miRNAs in Chronic Rhinosinusitis with (CRSwNP) and without (CRSsNP) nasal polyps (1). Specifically, miR-155 and miR-21 have been observed to be upregulated in CRSwNP, increasing and attenuating the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines, respectively (2,3). Conversely, the downregulation of miR-34, miR-449, and members of the miR-200 family has been associated with impaired ciliogenesis and the regulation of epithelial-mesenchymal transition, respectively (4,5). Nonetheless, the direct role of miRNAs in CRSwNP is still being investigated.

Deactivating environmental strains of Escherichia coli, Enterococcus faecalis and Clostridium perfringens from a real wastewater effluent using UV-LEDs. Heliyon 2022; 8:e12628. Abstract
Environmental bacteria strains are known to be more resistant but studies on UV-LEDs are scarce, especially for Clostridium perfringens and Enterococcus faecalis. UV-LEDs of different wavelengths (268 nm, 279 nm and 307 nm) have been used for treating real wastewater from the effluent of the municipal plant in Linares (Spain), with real organic matter content, for E. coli, Enterococcus faecalis and Clostridium perfringens disinfection. Experimental results demonstrate that 268 nm was the most effective wavelength for inactivation of the three different bacteria strains: E. coli showed an inactivation rate of 0.561 at 268 nm vs. 0.245 at 279 nm and 0.0029 for 307 nm; E. faecalis inactivation rate was 0.313 at 268 nm, 0.231 at 279 nm and 0.0023 at 307 nm; and C. perfringens inactivation rate was 0.084 at 268 nm, 0.033 at 279 nm and 6.9e-4 at 307 nm. In general, 307 nm wavelength showed a significantly lower inactivation rate so it would not be recommended for practical applications. C. Perfringens required higher UV doses and longer times to achieve complete inactivation.

Abstract
Two hybrid SolWat systems operating in static (without flow circulation) versus dynamic (with flow circulation) mode were simultaneously compared. This work aims to demonstrate the viability of SolWat in dynamic mode to: a) adapt to the operation of the WWTP with a continuous flow, in which the wastewater flows continuously for treatment, b) treat a larger volume of water in the system and c) increase the cooling of the PV modules thanks to the cooling of the temperature of the water sample to improve the energy efficiency in the system. Real secondary wastewater effluents from wastewater treatment plants were used, using solar energy for water disinfection and photovoltaic energy production, in order to use the SolWat systems and implement it as a tertiary treatment. A total of five experiments were performed during autumn, winter, spring and summer. Solar disinfection of Escherichia coli, Enterococcus faecalis and Clostridium perfringens was assessed, and physicochemical parameters were also analysed. The UV dose received by the SolWat systems was the same, but not for the microorganisms in the water sample. The static SolWat irradiated a particle (microorganism) for 4 h, while the dynamic SolWat irradiated intermittently, so the latter system received a shorter UV exposure time, and therefore a lower UV dose. Results indicated that, although the microorganisms did not obtain the absolute bacterial inactivation during the SODIS treatment in any SolWat system, adequate inactivation levels were achieved to allow the reuse of the water for various uses (Royal Decree 1620/2007, Regulation (EU) 2020/741), although to a lesser extent for SolWat in dynamic mode, which treated twice the volume of water and reached cooler temperatures. C. perfringens proved to be the most resistant bacterium tested. The total photovoltaic energy production in the dynamic mode system was more energy efficient than the static mode, being even more efficient than the single PV reference system during the spring (3.5%) and summer (2.7%) test, due to the compensating effect by the cooling of the water on the photovoltaic module against the losses caused by radiation.

Abstract
Purpose/Objective(s) To evaluate the results of LD-RT to lungs in the management of patients with COVID-19 pneumonia. Materials/Methods We conducted a prospective phase I-II trial enrolling COVID-19 patients ≥50 years-old, with bilateral lung involvement at imaging study and oxygen requirement. Patients received 1 Gy to whole lungs in a single fraction. Primary outcome was radiological response assessed as severity and extension scores at days +3 and +7. Secondary outcomes were toxicity (CTCAE v5.0), days of hospitalization, changes in inflammatory blood parameters (ferritin, lymphocytes, C-reactive protein, d-dimer and LDH) and SatO2/ FiO2 index (SAFI), at day +3 and +7. Descriptive analyses were summarized as means with standard deviation (SD) and/or medians with interquartile ranges (IQR). A Wilcoxon sign rank test for paired data was used to assess the CT scores and Chi Square was used to assess for comparison of categorical variables. Results Forty-one patients were included. Median age was 71 (IQR 60-84). Eighteen patients (47%) previously received any antiCOVID treatment (tocilizumab, lopinavir/ritonavir, remdesivir) and thirty-two patients (84%) received steroids during LD-RT. Extension score improved significantly (p=0.02) on day +7 and SAFI on day +3 and + 7 (p<0.01). Median SAFI on day 0 was 147 (IQR 118-264), 230 (IQR 120-343) on day +3 and 293 (IQR 121-353) on day +7. Significant decrease was found in C-reactive protein on day +7 (p=0.02) and in lymphocytes counts on day +3 and +7 (p=0.02). Median number of days in hospital after RT was 11 (range 4-78). With a median follow-up of 60 days after LD-RT, 26 (63%) patients were discharged, 11 (27%) died because of COVID respiratory failure and 4 (10%) died of other causes. Conclusion LD-RT is a feasible and well-tolerated treatment that may lead to rapid clinical improvement. Large randomized trials should be done to establish the efficacy of LD-RT to treat COVID-19 pneumonia.

Abstract
Sustainable production of potable water is one of the United Nations sustainable development goals set for 2030. Among available renewable energy resources, solar energy is abundantly available in most of the fresh water scarce rural and remote locations. Moreover, solar distillation units and solar photovoltaic (PV) modules have been acknowledged as suitable candidates for addressing rising fresh water and electricity demands in these regions. In recent years, researchers have proposed a number of novel hybrid solar distillation units where the solar PV modules are integrated with solar thermal distillation units in different ways to harvest both electric power and potable water. In this work, a detailed review highlighting the classification, working principle, performance and features of these novel hybrid units have been carried out. In most of these hybrid units, integration is highly beneficial for solar thermal distillation units rather than for PV modules. Direct utilization of PV module as absorber, condenser and reflector in solar stills has few drawbacks. However, indirect utilization like utilizing electric power and waste heat energy recovered from PV module in distillation units has posed significant distillate yield enhancement up to 300.0%. In some cases, the integrated PV module has even generated sufficient power for carrying out essential domestic activities. Integrated PV module's performance has also improved significantly in few studies but the magnitude of improvement has not been disclosed clearly in most of the studies as more focus has been given to distillation units rather than PV modules. However, these novel hybrid configurations have not been fully explored & optimized and their techno-enviro-economic aspects have not yet been disclosed in these available precious literatures and they are still available as a potential research gap.

Abstract
Background
Sodium-glucose Cotransporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2-i) have shown improved cardiovascular outcomes in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) that surpass their hypoglycaemic power. However, the inclusion criteria in the pivotal studies were broad in terms of cardiovascular disease, and there are no specific studies on patients with coronary artery disease (CAD).
Purpose
To compare, in patients with T2DM and extensive CAD, the hazard ratio (HR) of all-cause death in patients treated with or without SLGT2-I, adjusted by IPTW and treatment (revascularization) strategy. Secondary: To compare the adjusted HR of cardiovascular (CV) death, myocardial infarction (MI), stroke, or heart failure admission (HF) in patients treated with or without SLGT-I.
Methods
A single-centre retrospective observational study in patients with T2DM, with the first diagnosis of extensive CAD defined by >50% stenosis in LM or 3-vessels, and alive at discharge. The study was approved by the research ethics committee and recruited consecutive patients from 2015 (year of first SLGT2-I approval) to 2020. Patients with prior revascularization, severe renal failure (filtration rate <30 ml/min), less than 6 months of SLGT2-I treatment and less than 1 year of follow-up were excluded.
Results
We recruited 420 patients with a mean age of 71.2±11.1 years; 78.6% were male, 82.6% had hypertension, 72% hyperlipemia, 50.2% were smokers or former smokers, 52.9% had a history of previous myocardial infarction and 10.7% of stroke. Mean LVEF (%) was 51.5±1.5, creatinine clearance 73.94±22 ml/min and glycated haemoglobin (%) 7.3±1.2.
The presentation was acute coronary syndrome in 44.3% (27% ST elevation/73% non-ST elevation). LM was affected in 29%; 3-vessel CAD was found in 86.7%; 2-vessel in 8.3%; 1-vessel in 3.8%, and 1.2% exclusively in the LM. Treatment strategy was PCI + OMT in 48.3%, CABG + OMT 39.8% and OMT only in 21.9%.
T2DM treatment, secondary prevention treatment and metabolic control at follow up are presented in Table 1. A total of 104 patients (24.8%) started treatment with SGLT2-I during a mean of 1.6±1 years. At a mean follow-up of 3±1.6 years, mortality was 16.4%, CV mortality was 9.5%, 6.9% had a MI,3.3% had a stroke, and 11.4% had HF admission. Patients treated with SLGT2-I had a lower risk of all-cause death, cardiovascular death and the composite of CV death or HF (Table 2). After IPTW, the risk of all-cause death was persistently lower in the SLGT-I group
Conclusion
This real-life study found that in T2DM patients with LM or MVD only 1 out of 4 patients was treated with SGLT2-I as a part of their secondary prevention treatment. Those with SGLT2-I had a reduced risk of all-cause death (HR 0.34 [0.12–0.91], p=0,033) after IPTW and treatment (revascularization) strategy adjustment.

Characterizing Determinants of Near-Road Ambient Air Quality for an Urban Intersection and a Freeway Site. Res Rep Health Eff Inst 2022; 2022:1-73. Abstract
INTRODUCTION Near-road ambient air pollution concentrations that are affected by vehicle emissions are typically characterized by substantial spatial variability with respect to distance from the roadway and temporal variability based on the time of day, day of week, and season. The goal of this work is to identify variables that explain either temporal or spatial variability based on case studies for a freeway site and an urban intersection site. The key hypothesis is that dispersion modeling of near-road pollutant concentrations could be improved by adding estimates or indices for site-specific explanatory variables, particularly related to traffic. Based on case studies for a freeway site and an urban intersection site, the specific aims of this project are to (1) develop and test regression models that explain variability in traffic-related air pollutant (TRAP) ambient concentration at two near-roadway locations; (2) develop and test refined proxies for land use, traffic, emissions and dispersion; and (3) prioritize inputs according to their ability to explain variability in ambient concentrations to help focus efforts for future data collection and model development. The key pollutants that are the key focus of this work include nitrogen oxides (NOx), carbon monoxide (CO), black carbon (BC), fine particulate matter (PM2.5; PM ≤ 2.5 μm in aerodynamic diameter), ultrafine particles (UFPs; PM ≤ 0.1 μm in aerodynamic diameter), and ozone (O3). NOx, CO, and BC are tracers of vehicle emissions and dispersion. PM2.5 is influenced by vehicle table emissions and regional sources. UFPs are sensitive to primary vehicle emissions. Secondary particles can form near roadways and on regional scales, influencing both PM2.5 and UFP concentrations. O3 concentrations are influenced by interaction with NOx near the roadway. Nitrogen dioxide (NO2), CO, PM2.5, and O3 are regulated under the National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) because of demonstrated health effects. BC and UFPs are of concern for their potential health effects. Therefore, these pollutants are the focus of this work. METHODS The methodological approach includes case studies for which variables are identified and assesses their ability to explain either temporal or spatial variability in pollutant ambient concentrations. The case studies include one freeway location and one urban intersection. The case studies address (1) temporal variability at a fixed monitor 10 meters from a freeway; (2) downwind concentrations perpendicular to the same location; (3) variability in 24-hour average pollutant concentrations at five sites near an urban intersection; and (4) spatiotemporal variability along a walking path near that same intersection. The study boundary encompasses key factors in the continuum from vehicle emissions to near-road exposure concentrations. These factors include land use, transportation infrastructure and traffic control, vehicle mix, vehicle (traffic) flow, on-road emissions, meteorology, transport and evolution (transformation) of primary emissions, and production of secondary pollutants, and their resulting impact on measured concentrations in the near-road environment. We conducted field measurements of land use, traffic, vehicle emissions, and near-road ambient concentrations in the vicinity of two newly installed fixed-site monitors. One is a monitoring station jointly operated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) and the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (NC DEQ) on I-40 between Airport Boulevard and I-540 in Wake County, North Carolina. The other is a fixed-site monitor for measuring PM2.5 at the North Carolina Central University (NCCU) campus on E. Lawson Street in Durham, North Carolina. We refer to these two locations as the freeway site and the urban site, respectively. We developed statistical models for the freeway and urban sites. RESULTS We quantified land use metrics at each site, such as distances to the nearest bus stop. For the freeway site, we quantified lane-by-lane total vehicle count, heavy vehicle (HV) count, and several vehicle-activity indices that account for distance from each lane to the roadside monitor. For the urban site, we quantified vehicle counts for all 12 turning movements through the intersection. At each site, we measured microscale vehicle tailpipe emissions using a portable emission measurement system. At the freeway site, we measured the spatial gradient of NOx, BC, UFPs, and PM, quantified particle size distributions at selected distances from the roadway and assessed partitioning of particles as a function of evolving volatility. We also quantified fleet-average emission factors for several pollutants. At the urban site, we measured daily average concentrations of nitric oxide (NO), NOx, O3, and PM2.5 at five sites surrounding the intersection of interest; we also measured high resolution (1-second to 10-second averages) concentrations of O3, PM2.5, and UFPs along a pedestrian transect. At both sites, the Research LINE-source (R-LINE) dispersion model was applied to predict concentration gradients based on the physical dispersion of pollution. Statistical models were developed for each site for selected pollutants. With variables for local wind direction, heavy-vehicle index, temperature, and day type, the multiple coefficient of determination (R2) was 0.61 for hourly NOx concentrations at the freeway site. An interaction effect of the dispersion model and a real-time traffic index contributed only 24% of the response variance for NOx at the freeway site. Local wind direction, measured near the road, was typically more important than wind direction measured some distance away, and vehicle-activity metrics directly related to actual real-time traffic were important. At the urban site, variability in pollutant concentrations measured for a pedestrian walk-along route was explained primarily by real-time traffic metrics, meteorology, time of day, season, and real-world vehicle tailpipe emissions, depending on the pollutant. The regression models explained most of the variance in measured concentrations for BC, PM, UFPs, NO, and NOx at the freeway site and for UFPs and O3 at the urban site pedestrian transect. CONCLUSIONS Among the set of candidate explanatory variables, typically only a few were needed to explain most of the variability in observed ambient concentrations. At the freeway site, the concentration gradients perpendicular to the road were influenced by dilution, season, time of day, and whether the pollutant underwent chemical or physical transformations. The explanatory variables that were useful in explaining temporal variability in measured ambient concentrations, as well as spatial variability at the urban site, were typically localized real-time traffic-volume indices and local wind direction. However, the specific set of useful explanatory variables was site, context (e.g., next to road, quadrants around an intersection, pedestrian transects), and pollutant specific. Among the most novel of the indicators, variability in real-time measured tailpipe exhaust emissions was found to help explain variability in pedestrian transect UFP concentrations. UFP particle counts were very sensitive to real-time traffic indicators at both the freeway and urban sites. Localized site-specific data on traffic and meteorology contributed to explaining variability in ambient concentrations. HV traffic influenced near-road air quality at the freeway site more so than at the urban site. The statistical models typically explained most of the observed variability but were relatively simple. The results here are site-specific and not generalizable, but they are illustrative that near-road air quality can be highly sensitive to localized real-time indicators of traffic and meteorology.

Abstract
A novel SolWat system designed exclusively as a Solar Home System that also meets the drinking water access in a family of a rural community in a developing country has been designed, manufactured and tested outdoors. The system is composed of 5 photovoltaic modules of monocrystalline silicon solar cells technology, each 20 Wp, parallel-interconnected, adding up to a 100 Wp system. The modules have a water reactor on top with the capacity of providing a minimum of 37.5 L per day for a family of 5 members, guaranteeing the minimum daily needs. Experimental campaign run tests of SODIS of 3 h each, running the system 3 times per day (with a total of 9 h of experimentation per day). Results show that the water treatment of 3 h should be increased at certain periods of the day when the UV dose is not sufficient (late in the afternoon). E. coli and Enterococcus spp achieved total inactivation or almost total disinfection. Regarding electrical production, although energy losses of 5.6-10% were observed in comparison with a single PV module, it was sufficient to fully meet the load demand of the solar home system. The system could be used in a household of a developing country, using only solar energy to meet the electricity and drinking water demand.

Abstract
Background:ALPS patients show impaired generation of humoral memory for T independent antigens whereas they generate memory for self-antigens due to impaired FAS-dependent removal of autoreactive germinal center B cells. It is known that FAS signaling via caspase activation results in cell apoptosis. However, FAS ligation may also initiate or modulate non-apoptotic signaling as shown for example by its ability to activate NF-κB. Recent data implicate a regulatory role of FAS in the modulation of mTOR signaling in ALPS double-negative T cells. Moreover, a recently described C194V FAS mutation disturbs its post-translational modification leading to impaired apoptosis induction while non-apoptotic signalling is still intact. Consequently, C194V FAS protects from the autoimmune phenotype in the murine ALPS system. This supports the view that FAS may prevent autoimmunity with other mechanisms than inducing apoptosis.Objectives:We hypothesize that FAS mutations impair this modulatory signaling, leading to hyper-activation of B cells. Therefore we aim to investigate non apoptotic FAS signaling in B cells derived from healthy individuals and ALPS patients.Methods:We studied resting and activated B cells in ALPS patients in presence or absence of FAS ligand by flow cytometry analysing relevant molecules to the CD40 signaling pathway. We used mass cytometry to perform functional phenotyping of B cells isolated from secondary lymphoid organs. Proteomic studies were performed to identify potential signaling circuits and RNA sequencing to study the consequences of FAS signaling on B cell fate.Results:In CD40L activated B cells, FAS signaling results in specific modulation of the mTOR signaling pathway. This modulation is absent in ALPS derived B cells. In line with these data germinal center B cells and plasmablast from secondary lymphoid organs of ALPS patients show hyperactive mTOR signaling pathway. Proteomic studies identify a circuit that links FAS to the phosphatase PTEN via DAXX and the deubiquitinase USP7.Conclusion:We describe a new role of FAS in the regulation of B cell activation. Defects in FAS signaling in ALPS contribute to dysregulation of the mTOR signaling pathway and disturbed B cell development.Disclosure of Interests:None declared

Abstract
Purpose To investigate cross-sectional associations between dietary patterns and cognitive functioning in elderly free of dementia. Methods Data of 389 participants from the German DELCODE study (52% female, 69 ± 6 years, mean Mini Mental State Score 29 ± 1) were included. The sample was enriched with elderly at increased risk for Alzheimer’s disease (AD) by including participants with subjective cognitive decline, mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and siblings of AD patients. Mediterranean and MIND diets were derived from 148 Food Frequency Questionnaire items, and data-driven patterns by principal component analysis (PCA) of 39 food groups. Associations between dietary patterns and five cognitive domain scores were analyzed with linear regression analyses adjusted for demographics (model 1), and additionally for energy intake, BMI, other lifestyle variables and APOe4-status (model 2). For PCA-derived dietary components, final model 3 included all other dietary components. Results In fully adjusted models, adherence to Mediterranean and MIND diet was associated with better memory. The ‘alcoholic beverages’ PCA component was positively associated with most cognitive domains. Exclusion of MCI subjects (n = 60) revealed that Mediterranean and MIND diet were also related to language functions; associations with the alcoholic beverages component were attenuated, but most remained significant. Conclusion In line with data from elderly population samples, Mediterranean and MIND diet and some data-derived dietary patterns were related to memory and language function. Longitudinal data are needed to draw conclusions on the putative effect of nutrition on the rate of cognitive decline, and on the potential of dietary interventions in groups at increased risk for AD. Abstract
Protozoan parasitic infections are health, social and economic issues impacting both humans and animals, with significant morbidity and mortality worldwide. Protozoan parasites have complicated life cycles with both intracellular and extracellular forms. As a consequence, protozoan adapt to changing environments in part through a dynamic enzyme-catalyzed process leading to reversible posttranslational modifications (PTMs). The characterization by proteomics approaches reveals the critical role of the PTMs of the proteins involved in host-pathogen interaction. The complexity of PTMs characterization is increased by the high diversity, stoichiometry, dynamic and also co-existence of several PTMs in the same moieties which crosstalk between them. Here, we review how to understand the complexity and the essential role of PTMs crosstalk in order to provide a new hallmark for vaccines developments, immunotherapies and personalized medicine. In addition, the importance of these motifs in the biology and biological cycle of kinetoplastid parasites is highlighted with key examples showing the potential to act as targets against protozoan diseases.

Abstract
The lack of access to safe drinking water is one of the biggest challenges facing humanity in the 21st century. Despite the collective global effort that has been made, the drinking water sources of at least 2 billion people are faecally contaminated, resulting in more than half a million diarrhoeal deaths each year, with the majority occurring in developing countries. Technologies for the inactivation of pathogenic microorganisms in water are therefore of great significance for human health and well-being. However, conventional technologies to provide drinking water, although effective, present limitations that impede their global application. These treatment methods often have high energy and chemical demands, which limits their application for the prevention of waterborne diseases in the most vulnerable regions. These shortcomings have led to rapid research and development of advanced alternative technologies. One of these alternative methods is solar disinfection, which is recognised by the World Health Organization as one of the most appropriate methods for producing drinkable water in developing countries. This study reviews conventional technologies that are being applied at medium to large scales to purify water and emerging technologies currently in development. In addition, this paper describes the merits, demerits, and limitations of these technologies. Finally, the review focuses on solar disinfection, including a novel technology recently developed in this field.

Abstract
Patients in cardiogenic shock refractory to basic medical therapy may require specialised assistance in a multispeciality environment distant to the institution where they are first admitted. In such situations, transportation of these critical patients may be difficult and involve many risks. Here we describe the case histories of two patients who underwent implantation of a paracorporeal left ventricular assist device and were transferred to specialised institutions for extended treatment. The distance of transportation was 400 km and the patients were transported by ambulance and helicopter. Some aspects of logistics and complexity of long-distance transportation are also commented on.

Abstract
Drinking water access in the Saharawi refugee camps located in the Algerian desert is a challenge that is still an on-going problem after 40years of conflict. This work presents an analysis of the situation with emphasis on the water supply in health institutions (quantity and quality) including both sanitary inspections and a comprehensive water quality study. Results from sanitary inspections show that only half of the water supply installations at the hospitals are in adequate conditions and the rest present high risk of microbiological contamination. Water access in small medical community centres on the other hand present issues related to the non-availability of food-grade water tanks for the institutions (70%), the use of small 10l containers as the main water supply (40%), poor maintenance (60% under antihygienic conditions and 30% with damaged covers), and insufficient chlorine levels that prevent microbiological contamination. Regarding water quality analyses, raw water supply in Smara, El Aiun and Awserd camps present high conductivity and high levels of fluoride, chloride, nitrate and sulphate, but dropping to normal levels within the drinking-water standards after water treatment via reverse osmosis plants. But for the case of El Aiun and Awserd, the reverse osmosis plant only provides treated water to the population each 20days, so the population receives raw water directly and health risks should be evaluated. Finally, Dakhla water supply is the best in terms of physico-chemical parameters quality, currently providing safe drinking water after a chlorination stage. In summary, drinking water access has improved dramatically in the last years due to the efforts of local and international authorities but several issues remain to be solved: access to treated water for all the population, improved water quality controls (especially in Dakhla), expansion of distribution networks, and adequate storage systems and maintenance.

Abstract
AIM The introduction of multimodal or fast track (FT) rehabilitation and laparoscopy in colorectal surgery has improved patient recovery and shortened hospital stay (HS). This study aimed to determine the influence of laparoscopic or open surgery on the postoperative recovery of colorectal cancer patients having a conventional care (CC) or FT protocol in the postoperative period. METHOD A multicentre prospective study was controlled with a retrospective group. The prospective group included 300 patients having elective colorectal resection for cancer. The retrospective control group included 201 patients with the same characteristics who were treated before the introduction of the programme. The patients were divided into four groups including laparoscopy + FT, open surgery + FT, laparoscopy + CC, and open surgery + CC. The primary end-points were HS and morbidity. Secondary end-points included mortality and reoperation rates. RESULTS The overall median HS was 7 days. The median HS for laparoscopy + FT was 5 days, open + FT 6 days, laparoscopy + CC 9 days and open + CC 10 days (P < 0.001). In the regression model the laparoscopy + FT group had the greatest reduction in HS (P < 0.001). A significant reduction in HS was observed in the laparoscopy + FT group compared with laparoscopy + CC (P < 0.001). The overall patient morbidity was 30.6%. The logistic regression model adjusted for propensity score showed no statistically significant differences between the study groups regarding all other end-points. CONCLUSION Colorectal cancer patients who underwent laparoscopic surgery within a multimodal rehabilitation protocol experienced the shortest HS and the lowest morbidity.

Abstract
Agricultural management affects the movement of atrazine in soil and leaching to groundwater. The objective of this study was to determine atrazine adsorption in a soil after 20 years of atrazine application under agronomic management practices differing in tillage practice (conventional and zero tillage), residue management (with and without residue retention) and crop rotation (wheat-maize rotation and maize monoculture). Atrazine sorption was determined using batch and column experiments. In the batch experiment, the highest distribution coefficient Kd (1.1 L kg(-1)) at 0-10 cm soil depth was observed under zero tillage, crop rotation and residue retention (conservation agriculture). The key factor in adsorption was soil organic matter content and type. This was confirmed in the column experiment, in which the highest Kd values were observed in treatments with residue retention, under either zero or conventional tillage (0.81 and 0.68 L kg(-1), respectively). Under zero tillage, the fact that there was no soil movement helped to increase the Kd. The increased soil organic matter content with conservation agriculture may be more important than preferential flow due to higher pore connectivity in the same system. The soil's capacity to adsorb 2-hydroxyatrazine (HA), an important atrazine metabolite, was more important than its capacity to adsorb atrazine, and was similar under all four management practices (Kd ranged from 30 to 40 L kg(-1)). The HA adsorption was attributed to the type and amount of clay in the soil, which is unaffected by agronomic management. Soils under conservation agriculture had higher atrazine retention potential than soils under conventional tillage, the system that predominates in the study area.

Abstract
The Chromosome 16 Consortium forms part of the Human Proteome Project that aims to develop an entire map of the proteins encoded by the human genome following a chromosome-centric strategy (C-HPP) to make progress in the understanding of human biology in health and disease (B/D-HPP). A Spanish consortium of 16 laboratories was organized into five working groups: Protein/Antibody microarrays, protein expression and Peptide Standard, S/MRM, Protein Sequencing, Bioinformatics and Clinical healthcare, and Biobanking. The project is conceived on a multicenter configuration, assuming the standards and integration procedures already available in ProteoRed-ISCIII, which is encompassed within HUPO initiatives. The products of the 870 protein coding genes in chromosome 16 were analyzed in Jurkat T lymphocyte cells, MCF-7 epithelial cells, and the CCD18 fibroblast cell line as it is theoretically expected that most chromosome 16 protein coding genes are expressed in at least one of these. The transcriptome and proteome of these cell lines was studied using gene expression microarray and shotgun proteomics approaches, indicating an ample coverage of chromosome 16. With regard to the B/D section, the main research areas have been adopted and a biobanking initiative has been designed to optimize methods for sample collection, management, and storage under normalized conditions and to define QC standards. The general strategy of the Chr-16 HPP and the current state of the different initiatives are discussed.

Abstract
Objective. To evaluate the association between diabetes mellitus and health-related quality of life (HRQOL) controlled for several sociodemographic and anthropometric variables, in a representative sample of the Spanish population. Methods. A population-based, cross-sectional, and cluster sampling study, with the entire Spanish population as the target population. Five thousand and forty-seven participants (2162/2885 men/women) answered the HRQOL short form 12-questionnaire (SF-12). The physical (PCS-12) and the mental component summary (MCS-12) scores were assessed. Subjects were divided into four groups according to carbohydrate metabolism status: normal, prediabetes, unknown diabetes (UNKDM), and known diabetes (KDM). Logistic regression analyses were conducted. Results. Mean PCS-12/MCS-12 values were 50.9 ± 8.5/ 47.6 ± 10.2, respectively. Men had higher scores than women in both PCS-12 (51.8 ± 7.2 versus 50.3 ± 9.2; P < 0.001) and MCS-12 (50.2 ± 8.5 versus 45.5 ± 10.8; P < 0.001). Increasing age and obesity were associated with a poorer PCS-12 score. In women lower PCS-12 and MCS-12 scores were associated with a higher level of glucose metabolism abnormality (prediabetes and diabetes), (P < 0.0001 for trend), but only the PCS-12 score was associated with altered glucose levels in men (P < 0.001 for trend). The Odds Ratio adjusted for age, body mass index (BMI) and educational level, for a PCS-12 score below the median was 1.62 (CI 95%: 1.2-2.19; P < 0.002) for men with KDM and 1.75 for women with KDM (CI 95%: 1.26-2.43; P < 0.001), respectively. Conclusion. Current study indicates that increasing levels of altered carbohydrate metabolism are accompanied by a trend towards decreasing quality of life, mainly in women, in a representative sample of Spanish population.

Background
Measurement of residual disease following neoadjuvant chemotherapy that accurate predicts long-term survival in locally advanced breast cancer (LABC) is an essential requirement for new drugs efficacy evaluation. Several methods to assess neoadjuvant chemotherapy tumor response have been described. However, to our knowledge, agreement between methods and correlation with survival in independent prospective cohorts has not been reported.
Patients & Methods: In this study we report neoadjuvant chemotherapy tumor response and survival in 151 consecutive LABC patients, included in a neoadjuvant clinical trial (http://www.clinicaltrials.gov; NCT00123929). Patients were randomized to either neoadjuvant docetaxel 100 mg/m2 every 21 days or neoadjuvant doxorubicin 75mg/m2, every 21 days, for 4 cycles. Following surgery, response was established according to three methodologies: the measurement of residual breast cancer burden (RBC) as described by Symman's (Symmans WF et al. J Clin Oncol. 2007;25:4414–22), Miller and Payne classification (Ogston KN et al. Breast. 2003;12:320–7) and RECIST criteria. Regarding to Symmans classification we have evaluate both RBC index, as a continuous variable, and RBC classes as a categorical variable (RBC-0,I,II,III). Kappa Cohen's coefficient (K) was used to test agreement between methods. We assessed the correlation between treatment outcome and overall survival (OS) by calculating the Harrell's C- statistic.
Results: Median of follow up was 51.9 months. All three methods showed a moderate capacity to classify patients according to OS. The C-statistic to predict OS was 0.76 (IC: 0.67- 0.84) for RBC index and 0.71 (IC: 0.64−0.78) for RBC classes, 0.68 (IC: 0.58−0.78) for RECIST criteria and 0.69 (0.60−0.78) for Miller and Payne classification. Interesting, we did not encountered any death events within RCB-0 class. No significant differences were found between C-statistic when patients were stratified according to therapy. In order to assess the agreement between techniques, we grouped categories 1 and 2 of Miller and Payne classification in 1 category. The agreement between Miller and Payne classification and Symmans method was very high (K=0.87). In contrast, we found a moderate-fair agreement between Miller and Payne classification and RECIST criteria (K=0.46) and Symmans method and RECIST criteria (K=0.27).
Conclusion: All three methods predicted fairly well OS. RCB-0 identified the best outcome group. The agreement between methodologies based in pathology analyses was very high. However, the agreement falls off when these methodologies were compared with RECIST criteria.

Abstract
Leukotriene receptor antagonists, such as montelukast (MK), are currently used to treat rhinitis and asthma, but their anti-inflammatory role in eosinophil inflammation is not well understood. The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of MK on an in vitro model of upper-airway eosinophil inflammation by reducing pro-inflammatory cytokines from both nasal mucosa (NM) and polyp (NP) epithelial cells and reducing eosinophil survival primed by epithelial cell secretions. Epithelial cells were stimulated with fetal bovine serum (FBS) with or without MK for 24 hours, and cytokine concentrations in epithelial secretions were measured by ELISA. After incubating peripheral blood eosinophils with epithelial cell-conditioned media (ECM) with or without MK up to 3 days, eosinophil survival was assessed by Trypan blue dye exclusion. Results are expressed as mean±SEM of cytokine concentration (percent of control) or eosinophil survival (percent). Epithelial cell stimulation increased GM-CSF, IL-6, IL-8, and sICAM-1 secretion in both NM and NP. MK had a significant inhibitory effect on FBS-induced GM-CSF, IL-6, and IL-8 secretion, but not sICAM-1, in both NM and NP. MK also showed an inhibitory effect (p<0.05) on ECM-induced eosinophil survival from both NM (from 10(-5)M to 10(-7)M, n=7) and NP (at 10(-5)M, n=7), after 3 days of incubation. These anti-inflammatory effects on epithelial cell cytokine secretion and on eosinophil survival suggest that montelukast may contribute to the reduction of eosinophilic inflammation in upper-airway inflammatory diseases such as rhinitis and nasal polyposis.
