Determination of anxiety, depression, avoidance and obsessions experienced by hemodialysis patients during the COVID-19

INTRODUCTION

The purpose of this study was to ascertain the levels of anxiety, despair, avoidance, and obsessions that hemodialysis patients dealt with during the pandemic.

METHODS

The study was conducted with 139 hemodialysis patients. Research data "Coronavirus Anxiety Scale (CAS)," "Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HAD)," "COVID-19 Avoidance Scale" (AA-COVID-19) and "Coronavirus Obsession Scale (OCS)." The data obtained from the research were analyzed using the SPSS 21 package program.

RESULTS

The average score of the patients on the CAS scale was 0.73 ± 1.17, on the HAD-A scale was 5.94 ± 3.67, and on the HAD-D scale was 7.06 ± 3.89. The COVID-19 outbreak has consequently had a severe impact on hemodialysis patients' mental health.

CONCLUSION

Covid 19 epidemic, the health sector failed to protect the mental health of patients. However, new epidemics and disasters await the world in the future. In these results show that new strategies need to be developed.

Hemodialysis Patients' Knowledge of, Beliefs about, and Practices in Using Complementary and Alternative Medicine: An Exploratory Study

CONTEXT

Patients undergoing hemodialysis (HD) are increasingly interested in complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) due to their desire to access symptom-reducing interventions, the inability of most medical teams to devote enough time to their patients, and the cost of treatments.

OBJECTIVES

The aim of the study was to determine the knowledge of, beliefs about, and practices in using CAM of HD patients living in eastern Turkey.

DESIGN

The research team performed a descriptive, cross-sectional study.

SETTING

The study was carried out between April 2019 and June 2020 in Atatürk University Research Hospital and Regional Training and Research Hospital located in eastern Turkey.

PARTICIPANTS

A power analysis was performed to determine the sample size of the study, with the 120 HD participants being included in the sample at the 85% confidence range.

OUTCOME MEASURES

The research team prepared a questionnaire for determining the identifying characteristics of participants and their knowledge of, beliefs about, and practices in using CAM.

RESULTS

Of the 120 participants, 70.8% had information about CAM, and 60.8% of them had obtained it from their families. In general, participants had a positive opinion about CAM, and most didn't obtain approval from their physicians for the use of CAM. Among CAM methods, participants mostly used phytotherapy (80%), especially garlic (57.5%), parsley (56.7%), and linden (50%).

CONCLUSIONS

Because the participants in the current study usually tended to hide the fact that they used CAM, healthcare professionals should be careful about establishing a proper and reassuring relationship with patients and avoid criticizing them for preferring these methods. Patients should be especially informed about the use of phytotherapy, especially garlic, and be warned about its potential risks.

Determining the effect of yoga on job satisfaction and burnout of nurse academicians

PURPOSE

This study was conducted to determine the effect of yoga on burnout and job satisfaction of nursing academicians.

DESIGN AND METHODS

The research is an experimental clinical trial conducted as pretest-posttest with control groups between March and August 2019 in a Nursing Faculty. Participants in the experimental group were given yoga practice (n = 33) twice a week for 8 weeks. Data were collected by using MBI and MSQ.

FINDINGS

The experimental group's mean posttest Personal Achievement, Extrinsic Satisfaction and General Satisfaction scores were higher than that of control group participants, and a highly significant difference was found between the groups.

PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS

Yoga practice is effective in reducing the burnout and increasing job satisfaction of nursing academicians.

Complementary And Alternative Medicine Use In Turkish Patients With Epilepsy

CONTEXT

Epilepsy is a condition characterized by abnormal and excessive electrical discharges of cortical neurons resulting sudden, repetitive, event-triggered seizures. Epilepsy is most common neurologic disorder during childhood and the second most common neurological disorder following cerebrovascular diseases in adults. Use of CAM in persons with epilepsy is high, even compared to individuals with other chronic health conditions.

OBJECTIVES

We aimed to determine the prevalence, types, and factors influencing use of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) in adults with epilepsy.

METHODS

The subjects of this descriptive study consisted of 96 patients with epilepsy in the outpatient neurology clinic of a hospital in Erzurum, Turkey. Frequency, percentage and other descriptive statistics were used to describe and summaries data.

RESULTS

While most patients preferred CAM use (76%) for treatment of epilepsy patients some did not (24%). Spiritual practices was the most commonly used therapy in 66.7 % of patients. Although 74% of the subjects reported that they were satisfied with their use of CAM, the majority (97%) did not discuss the use of these therapies with their primary physicians. It was determined that variables such as gender, education level, residential area, marital status, and level of income and affected the use of CAM (P < .05).

CONCLUSION

Turkish patients with epilepsy frequently use CAM in addition to standard medical therapy. Nurses caring for patient with epilepsy should initiate a dialogue about usage of CAM, discussing the potential adverse effects of CAM and the patient's therapeutic goals.

Effect of Music Therapy on Sleep Quality

CONTEXT

One of the important functions of nurses is to prepare a relaxing environment for patients, for whom they look after and fulfill sleep needs. Today, music therapy, one of nonpharmacological treatment approaches, can be used for enhancing the sleep quality of individuals. The increase of individuals' sleep quality by using music therapy will enable nurses to intervene in problems associated with sleep disorders and prevent insomnia and other relevant problems.

OBJECTIVE

This study was conducted to determine the effect of music therapy on sleep quality of the students.

DESIGN

The research was an experimental pretest-posttest control group design.

SETTING

The research was conducted among the students studying in the nursing department at a university in the east of Turkey in the spring term of the academic year of 2015-2016.

PARTICIPANT

Students who (1) got a total score of 5 and higher according to the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), (2) had no neurological/psychiatric disorder, (3) had no hearing problem, (4) received no medical treatment regarding sleep, and (5) volunteered to participate in the study were included in the study. The students who were included in the study were divided into experimental and control groups.

INVENTION

Students in the experimental group were instructed to keep the volume of the personal MP3 player to be used for listening to the music therapy below 70% and to use it for 1 h/d at most. No intervention was applied to students in the control group. They were asked to sustain their normal sleeping habits.

OUTCOME MEASURE

To collect the data, a questionnaire prepared by the researchers for determining sociodemographic characteristics of the students and PSQI were used.

RESULTS

As a result of the study, it was found that the posttest PSQI mean scores of students in the experimental group, listening to music therapy, were lower than the mean scores of the students in the control group, and the difference between the groups was statistically significant.

CONCLUSIONS

As a result of this study, it was determined that music therapy increased the sleep quality of students. Being one of the nonpharmacological treatment approaches intended for solving sleep problems, music therapy is a pain-free, safe, and affordable treatment method without any side effect that could be used in every area of health.
