Abstract
The granular activated carbon (GAC) sandwich modification to slow sand filtration could be considered as a promising technology for improved drinking water quality. Biofilms developed on sand and GAC surfaces are expected to show a functional diversity during the biofiltration. Bench-scale GAC sandwich biofilters were set-up and run continuously with and without antibiotic exposure. Surface sand (the schmutzdecke) and GAC biofilms were sampled and subject to high-throughput qPCR for antibiotic resistance gene (ARG) analysis and 16 S rRNA amplicon sequencing. Similar diversity of ARG profile was found in both types of biofilms, suggesting that all ARG categories decreased in richness along the filter bed. In general, surface sand biofilm remained the most active layer with regards to the richness and abundance of ARGs, where GAC biofilms showed slightly lower ARG risks. Network analysis suggested that 10 taxonomic genera were implicated as possible ARG hosts, among which Nitrospira, Methyloversatilis and Methylotenera showed the highest correlation. Overall, this study was the first attempt to consider the whole structure of the GAC sandwich biofilter and results from this study could help to further understand the persistence of ARGs and their association with the microbial community in drinking water biofiltration system.

Abstract
Maximizing the safe removal of hexavalent chromium (Cr6+) from waste streams is an increasing demand due to the environmental, economic and health benefits. The integrated adsorption and bio-reduction method can be applied for the elimination of the highly toxic Cr6+ and its detoxification. This work describes a synthetic method for achieving the best chemical composition of spherical and flower-like manganese ferrite (MnxFe3-xO4) nanostructures (NS) for Cr6+ adsorption. We selected NS with the highest adsorption performance to study its efficiency in the extracellular reduction of Cr6+ into a trivalent state (Cr3+) by Shewanella oneidensis (S. oneidensis) MR-1. MnxFe3-xO4 NS were prepared by a polyol solvothermal synthesis process. They were characterised by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectrometry (XPS), dynamic light scattering (DLS) and Fourier transform-infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The elemental composition of MnxFe3-xO4 was evaluated by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy. Our results reveal that the oxidation state of the manganese precursor significantly affects the Cr6+ adsorption efficiency of MnxFe3-xO4 NS. The best adsorption capacity for Cr6+ is 16.8 ± 1.6 mg Cr6+/g by the spherical Mn0.22+Fe2.83+O4 nanoparticles at pH 7, which is 1.4 times higher than that of Mn0.8Fe2.2O4 nanoflowers. This was attributed to the relative excess of divalent manganese in Mn0.22+Fe2.83+O4 based on our XPS analysis. The lethal concentration of Cr6+ for S. oneidensis MR-1 was 60 mg L-1 (determined by flow cytometry). The addition of Mn0.22+Fe2.83+O4 nanoparticles to S. oneidensis MR-1 enhanced the bio-reduction of Cr6+ 2.66 times compared to the presence of the bacteria alone. This work provides a cost-effective method for the removal of Cr6+ with a minimum amount of sludge production.

Abstract
The adsorption of molecules usually increases capacity and/or strength with the doping of surfaces with transition metals; furthermore, carbon nanostructures, i.e., graphene, carbon nanotubes, fullerenes, graphdiyne, etc., have a large specific area for gas adsorption. This review focuses on the reports (experimental or theoretical) of systems using these structures decorated with transition metals for mainly pollutant molecules' adsorption. Furthermore, we aim to present the expanding application of nanomaterials on environmental problems, mainly over the last 10 years. We found a wide range of pollutant molecules investigated for adsorption in carbon nanostructures, including greenhouse gases, anticancer drugs, and chemical warfare agents, among many more.

Abstract
Antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) are being detected in drinking water frequently, constituting a major public health issue. As a typical drinking water treatment process, the biofilter may harbour various ARGs due to the filter biofilms established during the filtration process. The objective of this study was to investigate the behaviour of ARGs (blaCTX-M, blaOXA-1, blaTEM, ermB, tetA, tetG, tetQ, tetW, tetX, sul 1, sul 2, dfrA1 and dfrA12) and their possible association with bacteria in a bench-scale biofiltration system. The impact of filter media on horizontal gene transfer (HGT) was also explored using a model conjugative plasmid, RP1. The biofiltration system comprised four types of biofilters, including sand, granular activated carbon (GAC), GAC sandwich, and anthracite-sand biofilters. Results showed that although the absolute abundance of ARGs decreased (0.97-log reduction on average), the ARGs' abundance normalised to bacterial numbers showed an increasing trend in the filtered water. Biofilms collected from the surface layer revealed the lowest relative abundance of ARGs (p < 0.01) compared to the deeper layer biofilms, indicating that the proportion of ARG-carrying bacteria was greater in the lower position. Most chosen ARG numbers correlated to Proteobacteria, Acidobacteria and Nitrospirae phyla, which accounted for 51.9%, 5.2% and 2.0% of the biofilm communities, respectively. GAC media revealed the highest transfer frequency (2.60 × 10-5), followed by anthracite (5.31 × 10-6) and sand (2.47 × 10-6). Backwashing can reduce the transferability of RP1 plasmid significantly in biofilms but introduces more transconjugants into the planktonic phase. Overall, the results of this study could enhance our understanding of the prevalence of ARGs in drinking water biofiltration treatment.

Abstract
Household slow sand filter (HSSF) has been used as an alternative to drinking water treatment in rural communities worldwide; however, its performance to treat influent water with quality similar to rainwater still needs further studies. Rainwater presents low pH and slight mineral ion concentrations, an aspect that can modify the filter media and consequently the HSSF efficiency. Furthermore, house roofs used in rainwater harvesting can be made of plastic. Therefore, it can introduce chemicals such as Bisphenol A (BPA) in the water. In this context, two pilot-scale HSSFs operated in continuous and intermittent flows were evaluated to treat water containing BPA and low mineral ion concentrations in order to assess the filter performance. Filter media leaching was noticed in the trials; thus, filter media and construction material selection must be carefully evaluated to eliminate risks of pollutant occurrence in drinking water. Operational differences between continuous and intermittent flows influenced the HSSF efficiency for BPA and DOC removals; even so, the filters' performance was low probably due to the slow schmutzdecke development. According to tracer test results, HSSF can be classified as a plug flow reactor and strategies to improve its hydraulic performance are not required.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In this work, we assessed the efficacy and safety of brentuximab vedotin (BV) plus ESHAP (BRESHAP) as second-line therapy for Relapsed/Refractory Hodgkin lymphoma (RRHL) to improve the results before autologous stem-cell transplantation (ASCT). PATIENTS AND METHODS This was a multicenter, open-label, phase I-II trial of patients with RRHL after first-line chemotherapy. Treatment had three 21-day cycles of etoposide, solumedrol, high-dose AraC, and cisplatin. BV was administered at three dose levels (0.9, 1.2, and 1.8 mg/kg) intravenous on day ‒1 to 3 + 3 cohorts of patients. Final BV dose was 1.8 mg/kg. Responding patients proceeded to ASCT, followed by three BV courses (1.8 mg/kg, every 21 days). Main end points for evaluation were maximum tolerable dose and overall and complete response (CR) before ASCT. RESULTS A total of 66 patients were recruited (median age 36 years; range 18-66): 40 were primary refractory, 16 early relapse and 10 late relapse. There were 39 severe adverse events were reported in 22 patients, most frequently fever (n = 25, 35% neutropenic), including 3 deaths. Grade 3-4 hematological toxicity presented in 28 cases: neutropenia (n = 21), thrombocytopenia (n = 14), and anemia (n = 7). Grade ≥3-4 extrahematological adverse events (≥5%) were non-neutropenic fever (n = 13) and hypomagnesaemia (n = 3). Sixty-four patients underwent stem-cell mobilization; all collected >2×10e6/kg CD34+ cells (median 5.75; range 2.12-33.4). Overall response before transplant was 91% (CI 84% to 98%), including 70% (CRs 95% CI 59% to 81%). 60 patients were transplanted with no failure engraftments. Post-transplant response was CR in 49 patients (82% CI 73% to 91%) and partial responses in six (10% CI 5% to 15%). After a mean follow-up of 27 months, the 30-month time to treatment to failure was 74% (95% CI 68% to 80%), progression-free survival 71% (95% CI 65% to 77%), and overall survival 91% (CI 84% to 98%). CONCLUSION BRESHAP looks a safe and effective pre-transplant induction regimen, does not jeopardize transplant and allows long-term remissions and survival.

Abstract
Despite indoor mould being one of the most common problems in residential properties in the UK, there are not any widely accepted methodologies for its measurement. This paper focusses on this problem of measurement and reports on the findings from a rigorous testing scheme carried out to quantify air and surface mould concentrations and particle counts within 71 rooms from 64 properties in North London, some with and some without visible mould. The aim was to investigate the potential of passive and active air sampling strategies (sampling from still and actively mixed air, respectively) to explain visible mould, and understand how home/room characteristics correlate with the obtained readings. Airborne mould levels were quantified using an Andersen sampler (passively and actively), as well as by a chemical method based on the quantification of the N-acetylhexosaminidase (NAHA) activity (actively), which was also used to quantify surface mould. The mould levels were then correlated against physical characteristics of the tested homes/rooms, collected by means of survey sheets developed as part of this study. The findings did not reveal any independent variable governing all or most of the response variables, but a complex analysis suggested that whether it is a house or a flat could depict mould levels in the air and on the surfaces. It was also shown that a robust testing protocol should combine air and surface based methods, and an active air sampling strategy leads to a more accurate appraisal of airborne mould levels. Finally, the results showed that while there is some correlation between visible mould (and other moisture induced problems such as condensation) and measured air mould concentrations, lack of visible mould within a room does not necessarily mean low air mould concentrations, and thus one should not rely solely on visual inspection.

Abstract
Evidence has shown that environmental surfaces play an important role in the transmission of nosocomial pathogens. Deploying antimicrobial surfaces in hospital wards could reduce the role environmental surfaces play as reservoirs for pathogens. Herein we show a significant reduction in viable counts of Staphylococcus epidermidis, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, and MS2 Bacteriophage after light treatment of a medical grade silicone incorporating crystal violet, methylene blue and 2 nm gold nanoparticles. Furthermore, a migration assay demonstrated that in the presence of light, growth of the fungus-like organism Pythium ultimum and the filamentous fungus Botrytis cinerea was inhibited. Atomic Force Microscopy showed significant alterations to the surface of S. epidermidis, and electron microscopy showed cellular aggregates connected by discrete surface linkages. We have therefore demonstrated that the embedded surface has a broad antimicrobial activity under white light and that the surface treatment causes bacterial envelope damage and cell aggregation.

Abstract
Removal of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) from drinking water is usually enhanced by advanced oxidation which is not affordable in low income countries. Slow sand filtration has been found to be capable of removing anti-inflammatory compounds, and its low maintenance costs and easy operation make it an attractive technology for treating drinking water in many parts of the world. In addition, slow sand filters can be used at both large and household scales. The biofilm (i.e. schmutzdecke) developed on the top of the sand and within the upper layers of the sand is acknowledged to be responsible for the water purification. However, it is possible that the PPCPs may affect the schmutzdecke development and microbial community within the filters, and consequently the performance of the filter. This study investigated two household slow sand filters (for water purification) operated intermittently with and without contamination by six PPCPs. Eleven parameters were monitored in the affluent and effluent water, including bacterial species present and schmutzdecke biomass development. Results demonstrated that the household slow sand filter performance was not affected by the 2μgL-1 of PPCPs in the water. There was no significant difference between filters for total coliforms and E. coli removal, but there was considerable difference between sampling times. Biomass considerably increased with the number of filtrations in both filters and there was no significant difference between filter biomass. However, it was found that more bacterial species were present in the period with no contamination than during the contamination period. Bacillus anthracis and Exiguobacterium sp. showed to be resistant to the effects of the PPCPs. These suggest there are effects of PPCPs on bacterial species within the filter. However, the effect of the PPCPs on biomass was not conclusive in this study and needs to be further investigated.

Abstract
The dissemination in the central nervous system (CNS) is an uncommon but fatal complication occurring in patients with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL). Standard prophylaxis has been demonstrated to reduce CNS relapse and improve survival rates. Intrathecal (IT) liposomal cytarabine allows maintaining elevated drug levels in the cerebrospinal fluid for an extended period of time. Data on the efficacy and safety of liposomal cytarabine as CNS prophylaxis in patients with DLBCL are still insufficient. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of the prophylaxis with IT liposomal cytarabine in prevention of CNS relapse in high-risk patients with DLBCL who were included in a trial of first line systemic therapy with 6 cycles of dose-dense R-CHOP every 14 days. Twenty-four (18.6 %) out of 129 patients were identified to have risk factors for CNS involvement, defined as follows: >30 % bone marrow infiltration, testes infiltration, retroperitoneal mass ≥10 cm, Waldeyer ring, or bulky cervical nodes involvement. Liposomal cytarabine (50 mg) was administered by lumbar puncture the first day of the 1st, 2nd, and 6th cycle of R-CHOP14 scheme. Among 70 IT infusions, grade 3-4 adverse events reported were headache (one patient) and nausea/vomiting (one patient). With a median follow-up of 40.1 months, no CNS involvement by DLBCL was observed in any patient. In conclusion, IT liposomal cytarabine is safe, feasible, and effective for CNS prophylaxis, causing few associated risks and little discomfort to patients with DLBCL.

Abstract
Adenovirus infections within the hematopoietic stem cell transplantation setting can lead to high rates of mortality and hospital-acquired cases have been associated with environmental reservoirs. To establish both location and levels of environmental adenovirus contamination, 48 cubicles containing 794 surfaces were screened postterminal clean over a 4-year period. After initial cleaning 23% of these sites had detectable adenovirus. These data were then used to develop and implement a cleaning standard algorithm for terminal cleaning that was implemented to ensure cubicles were adenovirus-free before the next patient admission.

Abstract
This study investigated the presence of adenovirus and norovirus on ward surfaces using real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to assist in the development of evidence-based infection control policy. Screening was carried out weekly for 6 months in the common areas of 2 pediatric wards. Additionally, a one-off screening was undertaken for adenovirus and norovirus on a day unit and for adenovirus only in patient cubicles while occupied. Over the 6-month screening of common areas, 2.4% of samples were positive for adenovirus or norovirus. In rooms occupied with adenovirus-infected children, all cubicle screening sites and almost all swabs were contaminated with adenovirus. In the day unit, 13% of samples were positive. Cleaning and environmental interaction strategies must therefore be designed to control nosocomial transmission of viruses outside of outbreak scenarios.

Abstract
We have studied the prevalence of the different macrolide, lincosamide, streptograminB (MLS(B)) phenotypes among clinical Staphylococcus aureus isolates erythromycin- and/or oxacillin-resistant; and also the activity of other antimicrobial agents including telithromycin, quinupristin/dalfopristin, linezolid, aminoglycosides, chloramphenicol and vancomycin. We found that 64.86% of S. aureus were oxacillin-resistant. While the most prevalent MLS(B) phenotype among methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) was constitutive MLS(B) (cMLS) (83%), among methicillin-susceptible S. aureus (MSSA) it was inducible MLS(B) (iMLS(B)) (90%). Kanamycin resistance was more frequent than resistance to other aminoglycosides, being 100% for MRSA. Telithromycin was only active against iMLS(B), MS and erythromycin-susceptible isolates, although resistance rates were found among iMLS(B) MSSA (2.78%). Quinupristin/dalfopristin showed greater activity, with resistance rates of 2.5% for MRSA and 1.53% for MSSA. Both vancomycin and linezolid were fully active against all the isolates tested, with the highest MIC value being 2 microg/ml and 4 microg/ml, respectively. Among MRSA strains, 81.67% displayed resistance to five or more antimicrobials. This multiresistance was more frequently found among cMLS(B) strains (96.38% MRSA resistant to 6-9 agents).

Abstract
Early localization of biochemical recurrence in patients after radical treatment of prostate cancer is a widely accepted clinical indication of (11)C-choline PET/CT. Its widespread clinical use has prompted the depiction of incidentalomas, unusual sites of metastatic lesions, as well as false positive and negative cases. Over the last 6 years, a total of 454 (11)C-choline PET/CT studies have been performed in our institution to locate biochemical recurrence of patients with prostate cancer. With these studies, a second neoplasm has been found in 7 patients (1.54%): 3 lung, 2 colorectal, 1 esophagus and 1 esophageal junction, respectively. Although the clinical usefulness of this technique for detecting cancer lesions other than prostate origin is known for those patients who undergo this technique in the accepted indication, the diagnosis of a second tumor has a significant impact on their therapeutic management.

Abstract
Molecules secreted from the tick salivary gland modulate the vertebrate host immune response, thus representing potential targets for novel tick control measures. Tick salivary gland serine protease inhibitor (Serpin) is one such molecule that may facilitate tick feeding, blood meal digestion and pathogen transmission. The objective of this study was to determine the immunogenicity and protection of recombinant Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus salivary gland Serpin (rSerpin) in rabbits. Rabbits were injected with rSerpin, adjuvant or phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) alone, and challenge infested with 500 R. microplus larvae that were allowed to continuously feed and moult through the adult stage. All immunized rabbits generated antibodies to rSerpin in the second week after immunization. Ticks fed on immunized rabbits resulted in 83% reduction in adult engorgement and 34% reduction in egg mass weight compared with the PBS control. These results indicated that this tick Serpin is immunogenic to rabbits, and suggested that this vaccine candidate antigen can confer protective immunity against cattle ticks in this experimental model.

Abstract
Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus is an important cause of economic losses in Thailand through direct effects of feeding on cattle and pathogen transmission. Current tick control methods rely on expensive chemical acaricides that result in environmental contamination, residues in food animal products and acaricide-resistant ticks. Anti-tick vaccines based on concealed antigens have shown promising results in the control of cattle tick. Thus, recombinant Bm95 (rBm95) from Thai R. microplus (KU-VAC1) was cloned and expressed to test as an anti-tick vaccine in Thailand. The objective of this study was to compare antibody responses induced by KU-VAC1 to that obtained after vaccination with Gavac that is based on the Bm86 homologue. Four groups of six cattle each were immunized with KU-VAC1, Gavac, adjuvant or phosphate-buffered saline, and boosted three times at 21-day intervals. Enzyme-linked-immunosorbent serologic assay were used to measure the humoral antibody responses specific to Thai rBm95. Cattle immunized with either KU-VAC1 or Gavac showed significantly greater antibody production than the controls. Antibody titres were detected after the first immunization and peaked after the seventh week. These results indicated that KU-VAC1 and Gavac are similarly immunogenic, and that further studies are warranted to compare performance parameters of ticks fed on immunized cattle.

Abstract
UNLABELLED Older men with reduced renal function are at increased risk of hip bone loss. Given the robustness of this association across different measures and a growing body of literature, our findings indicate that clinicians should take into account renal function when evaluating older men for osteoporosis risk and bone loss. Future randomized controlled trials should test whether interventions in this high risk population are effective in preventing bone loss and decreasing fracture incidence. INTRODUCTION Studies examining whether kidney impairment, not requiring dialysis, is associated with osteoporosis have reported conflicting results. METHODS We tested the hypothesis that reduced renal function in older men as manifested by higher concentrations of cystatin C or lower levels of estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) is associated with higher rates of bone loss. We measured serum cystatin C, serum creatinine and total hip bone mineral density (BMD) at baseline in a cohort of 404 older men enrolled in the Osteoporotic Fractures in Men (MrOS) Study and followed them prospectively for an average of 4.4 years for changes in BMD. Associations between renal function and change in hip BMD were examined using linear regression. RESULTS In multivariable analysis, the mean rate of decline in total hip BMD showed an increase in magnitude with higher cystatin C concentration (mean annualized percent change -0.29, -0.34, -0.37 and -0.65% for quartiles 1 to 4; p for trend=0.004). Similarly, adjusted rates of hip bone loss were higher among men with lower eGFR as defined by the modification of diet in renal disease formula (mean annualized percent change -0.58, -0.39, -0.37, and -0.31 for quartiles 1 to 4; p for trend=0.02), but not among men with lower eGFR as defined by the Cockcroft-Gault formula (mean annualized percent change -0.47, -0.44, -0.31 and -0.43 for quartiles 1 to 4; p for trend=0.48). CONCLUSIONS Older men with reduced renal function are at increased risk of hip bone loss. Our findings suggest that health care providers should consider renal function when evaluating older men for risk factors for bone loss and osteoporosis.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE [corrected] The study is a recompilation of the reported human cases of Fasciola hepatica infection in Peru since 1963 to 2005. METHODS We review the electronic documentation of bibliographic resources in MEDLINE, LILACS, libraries of the medical, veterinary, philosophy and sciences faculties of the main universities and scientific institutions from Peru. We include all the references from national and international journals who report Peruvian cases of fasciolosis. RESULTS 1701 subjects in total were report in Peru between 1963 and 2005. The range of the age of the reported cases goes from 1 year to 71 years. Females were significative more common than males. 191cases were acute (11%); 1313 chronic (77.1%); y 167, chronic asymptomatic (9.8%). The reported cases came from 17/24 departments of Peru that represent 71% of the; Peruvian territory. The number the reported cases are increasing during the last decade to reach 54.1 cases in the last decade. CONCLUSIONS. Due to the significative increase of reported cases in the last 4 decades, human fasciolosis is an emergent parasitary infective disease in humans in Peru and we need preventive and control national health programs for this zoonosis.

Abstract
Gymnosperma glutinosum (Spreng.) Less (Asteraceae) is an important, and an effective herbal medicine which is wide used for the treatment of diarrhoea in Mexico. We examined and compared the antibacterial and antifungal activities through the dilution method and for general toxicity activity by the brine shrimp lethality assay of two samples of Gymnosperma glutinosum from two localities of Mexico: San Rafael-Coxcatlan (Puebla State) and Tepeji del Rio (Hidalgo State). In addition, two bioactive compounds (-)-17-hydroxy-neo-clerod-3-en-15-oic acid (1) and 5,7-dihydroxy-3,6,8,2',4',5'-hexamethoxyflavone (2) were isolated. From the hexane extract from both places was obtained a MeOH partition M(2). M(2) of Tepeji del Rio showed the least MICs (<125 microg/ml) in the majority of the bacterial strains. Sarcina lutea was the most sensitive bacteria (MIC< 125 microg/ml). The hexane extract of both localities showed antifungal activity against all tested fungi. San Rafael's hexane extract was significant more activity than Tepeji del Rio. Aspergillus niger (IC(50)=23.79 microg/ml) and Trichophyton mentagrophytes (IC(50)=90.25 microg/ml) were the more sensitive fungus strains. The strongest general toxicity activity was observed with the M(2) partition from Tepeji del Rio (LC(50)=503.7 microg/ml). The results obtained in this investigation, showed differences between the antimicrobial activities of the samples of plants collected in San Rafael (Puebla) and Tepeji del Rio (Hidalgo).

Abstract
Renal insufficiency is common after non-renal organ transplants. The predictors of long-term renal outcomes are not well established. A total of 219 lung and heart-lung transplant recipients surviving more than 6 months after transplantation were studied to determine predictors of time to doubling of serum creatinine and end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) with death as a competing risk. Median follow-up was 79 months (range 9-222 months). Baseline estimated glomerular filtration rate (GFR) was 96.3+/-34.5 mL/min/1.73 m2. One hundred twenty-two recipients (55%) doubled their serum creatinine, 16 (7.3%) progressed to ESKD and 143 (65%) died. The majority of recipients who survived >6 years had a GFR<60 mL/min at both 1 and 7 years. Most of the loss of renal function occurred in the first year post-transplant. Older age at transplant, lower GFR at 1 month and cyclosporine use in the first 6 months predicted shorter time to doubling of serum creatinine when death was handled as a competing risk. Based on this prevalence data and using GFR decay and death as study endpoints, we offer sample size estimates for a prospective, interventional trial that is aimed at slowing or preventing the progression of kidney disease.

Abstract
Using ethnobotanical techniques, the medicinal flora used by the inhabitants of San Rafael Coxcatlán, Puebla was determined. During the field work, two types of interviews were applied (free listing and semi-structured) to 60 informants, who supplied consistent information concerning the use of 46 species of medicinal plants. Further analysis showed 13 categories of different medicinal use. An informant consensus factor was calculated and 16 species were selected due to their utilization in the treatment of diseases of possible bacterial origin. Of these 16 plants, sequential extractions were made with hexane, ethyl acetate and methanol. The obtained extracts were used to assess their antibacterial activity against 14 bacterial strains; 75% of the plants presented antibacterial activity. The medicinal species Jatropha neopauciflora Pax (Euphorbiaceae) and Juliania adstringens (Schldl.) Schldl. (Julianiaceae) were those that showed the biggest activity. Moreover, these species also had the highest informant consensus factor values.

Abstract
The essential oil of the aerial parts of Lantana achyranthifolia Desf. (Verbenaceae) was examined by GC and GC-MS. Eighteen constituents were identified. Carvacrol, 1,8-cineole, isocaryophyllene, beta-bisabolene and alpha-bisabolol were found to be the major components. The oil exhibited antibacterial activity against fourteen Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.

Abstract
One hundred and sixty viridans group streptococci (VGS) and 26 Gemella spp. resistant to erythromycin were studied to detect macrolide lincosamide and streptogramin B (MLS(B)) phenotypes and to investigate resistance rates to other antibiotics. The M phenotype was most prevalent in both bacterial groups (59.6% in VGS, 69.2% in gemellae) and the iMLS(B) phenotype was found least often (9.3 and 13.9%, respectively). All isolates with M phenotype had the mef(A/E) gene, being prevalent the mef(E) subclass. cMLS(B) and iMLS(B) strains contained the erm(B) gene, alone or in combination with the mef(A/E) gene. Thirteen isolates were intermediately resistant to quinupristin/dalfopristin and 11 strains showed low susceptibility to telithromycin. Linezolid was active against all the isolates tested and tetracycline resistance was the major one in VGS (41.6%) and Gemella spp. (46.2%).
