Abstract
Steroid receptor coactivator 3 (SRC-3) is most strongly expressed in regulatory T cells (Tregs) and B cells, suggesting that it plays an important role in the regulation of Treg function. Using an aggressive E0771 mouse breast cell line syngeneic immune-intact murine model, we observed that breast tumors were "permanently eradicated" in a genetically engineered tamoxifen-inducible Treg-cell-specific SRC-3 knockout (KO) female mouse that does not possess a systemic autoimmune pathological phenotype. A similar eradication of tumor was noted in a syngeneic model of prostate cancer. A subsequent injection of additional E0771 cancer cells into these mice showed continued resistance to tumor development without the need for tamoxifen induction to produce additional SRC-3 KO Tregs. SRC-3 KO Tregs were highly proliferative and preferentially infiltrated into breast tumors by activating the chemokine (C-C motif) ligand (Ccl) 19/Ccl21/chemokine (C-C motif) receptor (Ccr)7 signaling axis, generating antitumor immunity by enhancing the interferon-γ/C-X-C motif chemokine ligand (Cxcl) 9 signaling axis to facilitate the entrance and function of effector T cells and natural killer cells. SRC-3 KO Tregs also show a dominant effect by blocking the immune suppressive function of WT Tregs. Importantly, a single adoptive transfer of SRC-3 KO Tregs into wild-type E0771 tumor-bearing mice can completely abolish preestablished breast tumors by generating potent antitumor immunity with a durable effect that prevents tumor reoccurrence. Therefore, treatment with SRC-3-deleted Tregs represents an approach to completely block tumor growth and recurrence without the autoimmune side effects that typically accompany immune checkpoint modulators.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Body weight variability (BWV) negatively affects the incidence and outcomes of various diseases, but the nature of the association between BWV and depression remains unclear. In this study, we aimed to test the hypothesis that BWV is associated with the risk of new-onset depression. METHODS Data from a nationwide population-based cohort in the Korean National Health Insurance Service database were analyzed for 6 598 570 adults with no history of depression and reports of at least three health examinations. BWV was estimated using variability independent of the mean indices and divided into quartiles (Q1 lowest, Q4 highest BWV). Cox proportional hazard models were applied to assess the risk of depression according to the quartile of BWV. RESULTS The incident rate for depression from Q1 to Q4 of BWV was 20.7, 20.3, 20.8, and 22.2 per 1000 person-years, respectively. BWV, especially high BWV, was associated with an increased risk of depression after adjusting for age, sex, smoking, alcohol consumption, physical activity, income, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, and dyslipidemia. The hazard ratio (HR) of new-onset depression was highest in Q4 relative to Q1 in the total population (HR 1.12, p < 0.0001) and was higher in women than in men (HR 1.72 v. 1.16, p < 0.0001). In stratified analyses, regardless of obesity or weight change status at baseline, the risk of depression was increased when bodyweight fluctuated highly during follow-up. CONCLUSIONS High BWV was associated with an increased risk of depression. Further studies need to evaluate the role of high BWV with respect to the onset of depression.

Significance statement Tregs are essential in restraining immune responses for immune homeostasis. SRC-3 is a pleiotropic coactivator, the second-most highly expressed transcriptional coactivator in Tregs, and a suspect in Treg function. The disruption of SRC-3 expression in Tregs leads to a 'complete lifetime eradication' of tumors in aggressive syngeneic breast cancer mouse models because deletion of SRC-3 alters the expression of a wide range of key genes involved in efferent and afferent Treg signaling. SRC-3KO Tregs confer this long-lasting protection against cancer recurrence in mice without an apparent systemic autoimmune pathological phenotype. Therefore, treatment with SRC-3 deleted Tregs could represent a novel and efficient future target for eliminating tumor growth and recurrence without the autoimmune side-effects that typically accompany immune checkpoint modulators.

Abstract
In this work, we address hybrid-driven-based robust synchronization problem for multi-weighted complex dynamical networks with actuator saturation and deception attacks. The hybrid-triggered mechanism, which combines a switch between the event-triggered scheme and the time-triggered scheme, is often used to reduce the data transmission and the alleviate network burden. Further, the equivalent-input-disturbance technique is applied to eliminate the unknown disturbance effect of the addressed system. Moreover, a memory controller is designed under actuator saturation to ensure that the resultant augmented system is asymptotically synchronized even in the presence of deception attacks. Finally, three numerical examples are given to show the validity of the obtained theoretical results.

Abstract
The rate of soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infection is estimated to be around 20% in Indonesia. Health promotion and health education are cost-effective strategies to supplement STH prevention and control programs. Existing studies suggest that quantitative tools for knowledge, attitudes and practices (KAP) are important to monitor effective community-based STH interventions. However, evidence is limited regarding the applicability of such tools. This study aims to identify the socio-demographic predictors for STH-related knowledge and practices and validate the quantitative tools in population use. A cross-sectional study design was conducted among residents of 16 villages in Central Java, Indonesia. Adult and child respondents were interviewed to assess general knowledge and practices in relation to STH. Two mixed effects models identified the significant factors in predicting knowledge and practice scores. The model predicted knowledge and practice scores were compared with the observed scores to validate the quantitative measurements developed in this study. Participants' socio-demographic variables were significant in predicting an individual's STH-related knowledge level and their hand washing and hygiene practices, taking into account household-level variability. Model validation results confirmed that the quantitative measurement tools were suitable for assessing STH associated knowledge and behaviour. The questionnaire developed in this study can be used to support school- and community-based health education interventions to maximize the effect of STH prevention and control programs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Successful cryopreservation of bovine oocytes is very important for research and commercial applications. However, the survival and development rate of vitrified-thawed (VT) oocytes are lower than those of non-vitrified-thawed (non-VT) oocytes. OBJECTIVE To investigate the effect of adding hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC) to the vitrification solution for bovine oocytes. MATERIALS AND METHODS For vitrification, bovine metaphase II oocytes were pretreated with a solution containing 10% ethylene glycol supplemented with 0, 10, 50, or 100 ug/mL HPC for 5 min, exposed to a solution containing 30% ethylene glycol supplemented with 0, 10, 50, or 100 ug/mL HPC for 30 s, and then directly plunged into liquid nitrogen. RESULTS The survival rate of oocytes was significantly higher in the 50 HPC group than in the 0, 10, and 100 HPC groups. The reactive oxygen species level was lower in the non-VT and 50 HPC groups than in the other groups. The mRNA levels of proapoptotic genes (Bax) were lower in the non-VT, 0, and 50 HPC groups than in the other groups. The mRNA levels of antiapoptotic genes (BCl2) were higher in the non-VT than in the other groups. The development rates of embryos (day 8) obtained via parthenogenetic activation (PA) were determined in the non-VT, 0 HPC, and 50 HPC groups. The cleavage rate was significantly higher in the non-VT group. CONCLUSION Supplementation of vitrification solution with HPC improves the survival of VT bovine oocytes and the development capacity of embryos derived from these oocytes via PA. doi.org/10.54680/fr23110110212.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Behçet's disease (BD) is a systemic inflammatory disease that involves various organs. The clinical manifestation-based diagnosis of BD is a time-consuming process, which makes it difficult to distinguish from patients with similar symptoms. Moreover, an authentic biomarker has not been developed for accurate diagnosis yet. Our current study investigated the unique metabolic signatures of BD and explored biomarkers for precise diagnosis based on an untargeted metabolomic approach. METHODS Integrative metabolomic and lipidomic profiling was performed on plasma samples of BD patients (n = 40), healthy controls (HCs, n = 18), and disease controls (DCs, n = 17) using GC-TOF MS and LC-Orbitrap MS. Additionally, the lipid profiles of 66 peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) were analyzed from 29 BD patients, 18 HCs, and 19 DCs. RESULTS Plasma metabolic dysfunction in BD was determined in carbohydrate, hydroxy fatty acid, and polyunsaturated fatty acid metabolisms. A plasma biomarker panel with 13 compounds was constructed, which simultaneously distinguished BD from HC and DC (AUCs ranged from 0.810 to 0.966). Dysregulated PBMC metabolome was signatured by a significant elevation in lysophosphatidylcholines (LPCs) and ether-linked lysophosphatidylethanolamines (EtherLPEs). Ten PBMC-derived lipid composites showed good discrimination power (AUCs ranged from 0.900 to 0.973). Correlation analysis revealed a potential association between disease activity and the metabolites of plasma and PBMC, including sphingosine-1 phosphate and EtherLPE 18:2. CONCLUSIONS We identified metabolic biomarkers from plasma PBMC, which selectively discriminated BD from healthy control and patients with similar symptoms (recurrent mouth ulcers with/without genital ulcers). The strong correlation was determined between the BD activity and the lipid molecules. These findings may lead to the development for diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers based on a better understanding of the BD pathomechanism.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Endometriosis is an estrogen-dependent inflammatory reproductive disease. Therefore, systematic estrogen depletion and anti-inflammatory drugs are the current treatment for endometriosis. However, current endometriosis treatments have low efficacy and cause adverse effects in endometriosis patients. Consequently, alternative endometriosis treatments targeting endometriosis-specific factors are in demand. In this context, ERβ was selected as a druggable target for endometriosis due to its critical role in progression. Therefore, selective targeting of ERβ without inhibiting ERα activity would be a new paradigm for endometriosis treatment to overcome the low efficacy and adverse effects of hormonal endometriosis therapy. METHODS Cell-based ERβ and ERα activity assay systems were employed to define a selective ERβ-inhibiting chemical product from a library of natural products. A surgically induced endometriosis mouse model was used to determine whether an ERβ inhibitory drug suppressed endometriosis progression. Mice with endometriosis were randomly separated and then orally treated with vehicle or 25 mg/kg oleuropein (once a day for 21 days), an ERβ inhibitory drug. The volume of endometriotic lesions or luciferase activity of endometriotic lesions was examined to define the growth of ectopic lesions in mice with endometriosis. The metabolite and levels of metabolic enzymes of the liver and kidney were determined in the serum of female mice treated with vehicle and oleuropein (25 mg/kg, once a day for 21 days) to define the toxicity of oleuropein. The in vitro decidualization assay was conducted with normal human endometrial stromal cells and endometriotic stromal cells to determine whether oleuropein overcomes decidualization in endometriosis patients. The pregnancy rate and pup numbers of C57BL/6 J female mice with endometriosis treated with vehicle or oleuropein (n = 10/group) were determined after mating with male mice. The cytokine profile in endometriotic lesions treated with vehicle and oleuropein (25 mg/kg) was determined with a Mouse Cytokine Array Kit. RESULTS Among natural products, oleuropein selectively inhibited ERβ but not ERα activity in vitro. Oleuropein treatment inhibited the nuclear localization of ERβ in human endometrial cells upon estradiol treatment. Oleuropein (25 mg/kg) treatment suppressed the growth of mouse (6.6-fold) and human (sixfold) ectopic lesions in mice with endometriosis compared to the vehicle by inhibiting proliferation and activating apoptosis in endometriotic lesions. Oleuropein treatment did not cause reproductive toxicity in female mice. Additionally, mice with endometriosis subjected to oleuropein treatment had a higher pregnancy rate (100%) than vehicle-treated mice (70%). Furthermore, oleuropein treatment partially recovered the decidualization impact of human endometriotic stromal cells from endometriotic lesions compared to the vehicle. Oleuropein-treated mice with endometriosis exhibited significantly lower levels of cytokines directly regulated by ERβ in ectopic lesions than vehicle-treated mice, illustrating the improvement in the hyperinflammatory state of mice with endometriosis. CONCLUSIONS Oleuropein is a promising and novel nutraceutical product for nonhormonal therapy of endometriosis because it selectively inhibits ERβ, but not ERα, to suppress endometriosis progression and improve the fertility of mice with endometriosis.

Abstract
Changes in the levels of female sex hormones are associated with mood disorders in middle-aged women. This study investigated the association between female reproductive factors and the development of newly diagnosed bipolar disorder (BD). We used a South Korean nationwide medical records database. Postmenopausal women aged 40 or older who underwent health examinations were identified and followed for the occurrence of BD. We identified female reproductive factors including the age at menarche and menopause, parity, history of breastfeeding, oral contraceptive (OC) use, and hormone therapy (HT), and investigated their association with the occurrence of newly diagnosed BD. During an average of 8.32 years (SD 0.83) of follow-up, the incidence of BD was 0.50 per 1000 person-years in postmenopausal women. Compared to women with menopause at an age of 40 years or younger, those with menopause at an age of 45 years or older showed decreased risks of BD. Compared to women who had never breastfed, those who had breastfed for more than 12 months showed a decreased risk of BD. Compared to women who never received HT, those who received HT showed an increased risk of BD in a time-dependent manner. Among postmenopausal women, later menopause and breastfeeding for more than one year were associated with a decreased risk of BD occurrence, and receiving HT was associated with an increased risk.

Abstract
This article proposes three new methods to enlarge the feasible region for guaranteeing stability for generalized neural networks having time-varying delays based on the Lyapunov method. First, two new zero equalities in which three states are augmented are proposed and inserted into the results of the time derivative of the constructed Lyapunov-Krasovskii functionals for the first time. Second, inspired by the Wirtinger-based integral inequality, new Lyapunov-Krasovskii functionals are introduced. Finally, by utilizing the relationship among the augmented vectors and from the original equation, newly augmented zero equalities are established and Finsler's lemma are applied. Through three numerical examples, it is verified that the proposed methods can contribute to enhance the allowable region of maximum delay bounds.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Situation-Background-Assessment-Recommendation reporting is a structured communication tool. In other studies of simulation-based education, learning was found to increase with increases in the level of flow during scenarios. Also, communication using SBAR was found to facilitate more focus on clinical situations. However, the generalizability of those findings in nursing education and the specific benefits of combining SBAR with simulation remain unclear. OBJECTIVES The aims of this study are to incorporate SBAR reporting into simulation-based nurse education, and measure its effects on the students' flow, communication competence, and communication self-efficacy among nursing students, to collect basic data for the development of effective nursing curricula. DESIGN This study used a non-equivalent, quasi-experimental pre-post parallel design. SETTING The intervention was administered in a simulation center at a nursing school in South Korea. PARTICIPANTS One hundred and twenty fourth-year nursing students were recruited through convenience sampling. METHODS The participants were quasi-randomly allocated to the control (n = 52) and SBAR (n = 68) groups. The integrated simulation course was conducted twice each week. Learning and reporting SBAR was included as a component of simulation-based education for the intervention group in each session (three scenarios). The dependent variables were communication competence, communication self-efficacy, and flow in the simulation. RESULTS SBAR did not affect communication competence or communication self-efficacy in simulation-based education. In contrast, while flow increased in both groups, the increase was greater in the SBAR group. CONCLUSIONS SBAR can increase nursing students' flow in simulations. Further studies should focus on how SBAR during simulation-based education affects nursing students' practical competency.

The development rates of embryos (day 8) obtained via parthenogenetic activation (PA) were determined in the non-VT, 0 HPC, and 50 HPC groups. The cleavage rate was significantly higher in the non-VT group. Abstract
INTRODUCTION Although people who attempted suicide tend to repeat suicide attempts, there is a lack of evidence on the association between psychiatric service factors and suicide reattempt among them. METHODS We used a nationwide, population-based medical record database of South Korea to investigate the use of psychiatric services before and after the index suicide attempt and the association between psychiatric service factors after the index suicide attempt with the risk of suicide reattempt. RESULTS Among 5,874 people who had attempted suicide, the all-cause mortality within 3 months after the suicide attempt was 11.6%. Among all subjects who attempted suicide, 30.6% of them had used psychiatric services within 6 months before the suicide attempt; 43.7% of them had used psychiatric services within 3 months after the suicide attempt. Among individuals who had visited clinics following attempted suicide, the cumulative incidence of suicide reattempt over a mean follow-up period of 5.1 years was 3.4%. About half of suicide reattempts occurred within 1 year after the index suicide attempt. Referral to psychiatric services within 7 days was associated with a decreased risk of suicide reattempt (adjusted hazard ratio, 0.51; 95% confidence intervals, 0.29-0.89). CONCLUSION An early psychiatric referral within 1 week after a suicide attempt was associated with a decreased risk of suicide reattempt.

Abstract
Alteration in stress response seems to affect the development of psychiatric disorders. In this study, we aimed to investigate whether baseline peripheral biomarkers could predict the reduction of stress response among patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) and panic disorder (PD). Patients with MDD (n = 41) and PD (n = 52) and healthy controls (HC, n = 59) were selected and regularly followed up with five visits for 12 weeks. The severity of stress at every visit was assessed using the Stress Response Inventory (SRI), and peripheral biomarkers were measured by blood tests at baseline and 2, 4, 8, and 12 weeks. Interleukin (IL)-6, IL-10, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, interferon (IFN)-γ, C-reactive protein (CRP), adiponectin, and leptin levels were analyzed using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays. Reduction of stress response was defined as the difference in SRI score between baseline and 12 weeks divided by the baseline score. SRI scores were significantly (p < 0.0001) higher in patients with MDD and PD than in HC at every visit after adjusting for variables. In multivariable linear regression, adiponectin levels at baseline were significantly associated with reduction of stress response in patients with PD. When adiponectin increased 1 mg/l, stress response decreased 0.781 points (β = -0.781, S.E. = 0.220, p = 0.001). Among the subscales of SRI, somatization had a moderate negative correlation with adiponectin levels (r = -0.469). There was no significant association between baseline peripheral biomarkers and reduction of stress response in patients with MDD. Our study showed an inverse association between baseline adiponectin levels and stress response changes in patients with PD, but not in patients with MDD. Thus, differentiated approaches for assessing and treating stress responses of patients with PD and MDD might be helpful. Larger and longitudinal studies are necessary to establish the role and mechanism of action of adiponectin in regulating stress responses in PD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There is an association between early life traumas and the development of depression in adults. Few studies have used nationwide population-based samples to investigate whether the type of early life trauma differentially influences the risk of developing depression. METHODS Major depressive disorder and early life trauma were assessed using the Korean version of the Composite International Diagnostic Interview (K-CIDI) for DSM-IV psychiatric disorder and a questionnaire for early life trauma in the Korean Epidemiological Catchment Area Study in 2016. A total of 4,652 participants were included in the final analysis. This study evaluated the effect of the type and frequency of reported early life trauma on the risk of developing MDD and the association between reported early life trauma and differential symptoms of MDD. RESULTS Individuals with reported early life trauma had a 3.7-fold increased risk of MDD. The risk of MDD was associated with bullying trauma (odds ratio (OR) = 1.847, p = 0.005) after adjusting for age, gender, marriage, job, and education years. The risk of MDD was increased as the types of reported early life traumas increased. CONCLUSION Bullying trauma during early life represents a risk factor for MDD, especially in individuals exposed to multiple traumas in early life.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Few previous studies have focused on prefrontal activation in young adults diagnosed with major depressive disorder (MDD) and suicidality via functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 59 healthy controls (HCs), 35 patients with MDD but without suicidality, and 25 patients with MDD and suicidality, between the ages of 18-34 years, were enrolled. Changes in oxygenated hemoglobin (oxy-Hb) levels of the prefrontal cortex at baseline, 4 weeks, and 8 weeks, were evaluated using a protocol consisting of three consecutively repeated trials of rest, speech, and verbal fluency test (VFT) via fNIRS. MDD was diagnosed and suicidality was evaluated based on Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI). RESULTS Oxy-Hb levels were impaired in patients with MDD compared with HCs (p = 0.018 for left prefrontal cortex; p = 0.021 for right ventromedial prefrontal cortex; p = 0.002 for left frontopolar cortex). Among the three groups including HCs, MDD without suicidality, and MDD with suicidality, prefrontal oxygenation was most decreased in MDD patients with suicidality. A significantly impaired prefrontal oxygenation in the right ventrolateral prefrontal cortex (VLPFC) was detected after adjusting for covariates in MDD patients with suicidality, compared to those without suicidality. CONCLUSION Impaired prefrontal oxygenation during cognitive execution may serve as a diagnostic biomarker for suicidality in young adult patients with MDD.

Abstract
This work investigates the stability and dissipativity problems for neural networks with time-varying delay. By the construction of new augmented Lyapunov-Krasovskii functionals based on integral inequality and the use of zero equality approach, three improved results are proposed in the forms of linear matrix inequalities. And, based on the stability results, the dissipativity analysis for NNs with time-varying delays was investigated. Through some numerical examples, the superiority and effectiveness of the proposed results are shown by comparing the existing works.

Abstract
ABSTRACT In this study, we defined obsessive thoughts (OT) as bothersome, unpleasant thoughts about oneself that keep entering the mind against one's will, and compulsive behavior (CB) as behavior that a person repeats against his or her wishes. The study included 12,532 adults selected randomly through a one-person-per-household method. Each subject selected underwent a face-to-face interview using the Korean version of the Composite International Diagnostic Interview with a questionnaire that examines lifetime suicide attempts (LSAs). Among the participants, 341 (2.74%) had OT and 639 (5.14%) had CB. The highest LSA rate was in subjects with both OT and CB, followed by those with either OT or CB; subjects with neither OT nor CB had the lowest LSA rate. In a multivariate logistic regression analysis of OT and CB, OT, ordering, and rituals of repeating words were significantly associated with LSAs. In subjects with OT and CB, those with MDD had a significantly higher risk of LSAs compared with those without, and MDD with both OT and CB showed odds of approximately 27-fold (adjusted odds ratio, 27.24; 13.29-55.82; p < 0.0001) compared with those without MDD, OT, or CB. OT and CB were associated with increased risk of LSAs, and comorbid MDD further increased LSAs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The effect of dynamic changes in metabolic parameters over time on the development of depression has yet to be examined. In this study, we aimed to determine the association between the variability of metabolic parameters and the development of depression using nationally representative data. METHODS We used health examination data provided by the South Korean National Health Insurance System (NHIS) and included those who underwent the examination ≥ 3 times within five years of enrollment, without a previous history of depression (n = 9,058,424). The variability of each metabolic parameter including weight circumference, blood pressure, fasting blood glucose, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and triglyceride levels was estimated using variability independent of mean (VIM) indices. High variability was defined as the highest quartile (Q4) of variability. RESULTS Each metabolic parameter with high variability was associated with a higher risk of newly diagnosed depression compared to those with low variability, after adjusting for age, sex, smoking, alcohol drinking, regular exercise, income status, baseline diabetes, hypertension, and dyslipidemia. As the number of highly variable metabolic parameters increased, the risk for newly diagnosed depression increased even after adjusting for the aforementioned covariates (hazard ratio (HR) = 1.4, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.3 - 1.4 in those with five highly variable parameters compared to those with no highly variable parameter). LIMITATIONS relatively short observation period; no systematic measure of depression severity. CONCLUSIONS Our results suggest that the variability of metabolic parameters is an independent risk factor for depression.

Abstract
The human microbiome plays an important role in various diseases, including Behçet’s disease (BD). However, the effects of disease activity and covariates influencing the microbial composition have not yet been investigated. Therefore, we investigated the fecal and salivary microbiomes of BD patients compared to those of recurrent aphthous ulcer (RAU) patients, as well as dietary habit-matched healthy controls (HCs) selected from immediate family members using 16S rRNA gene sequencing. The fecal microbiome alpha diversity of BD patients was not different from that of their matched HCs, although it was higher than that of unrelated HCs and decreased in BD patients with disease activity. A tendency toward clustering in the beta diversity of the fecal microbiome was observed between the active BD patients and their matched HCs. Active BD patients had a significantly higher abundance of fecal Bacteroides uniformis than their matched HCs and patients with the disease in an inactive state (p = 0.038). The abundance of salivary Rothia mucilaginosa group was higher in BD patients than in RAUs patients. BD patients with uveitis had different abundances of various taxa, compared to those without uveitis. Our results showed an association of fecal microbiome composition with BD disease activity and symptoms, suggesting the possible role of the gut microbiome in BD pathogenesis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND: As there had been no reduction in the TB burden in South Korea since 2000, a public-private mix (PPM) strategy was launched in 2011. The purpose of this study was to investigate the reasons for lost to follow-up (LTFU) among TB patients and their clinical characteristics.METHOD: A multicentre, cross-sectional study based on in-depth interviews with patients and their families by TB specialist nurses was conducted. Patients who were reported with a final outcome of LTFU in 2015-2017 at all PPM hospitals across the country were enrolled. Enrolled patients were classified into six subgroups by age and three major reasons for LTFU (adverse effects, refusal of treatment, marginalisation) and their clinical features were compared.RESULTS: Among 780 patients, those who were lost to follow-up due to adverse effects accounted for the largest proportion (n = 387). LTFU in those aged <65 years who refused treatment (n = 189) and those aged <65 years who were marginalised (n = 108) were related to having smear-positive TB and a previous history of unfavourable outcomes.CONCLUSION: To reduce LTFU in South Korea, comprehensive strategies, including management of adverse effects, systematic counselling and education, should be implemented.

Abstract
This study examined the effect of neighborhood factors on suicidal ideation of community-dwelling older adults in Korea. To understand the effect of neighborhood factors (neighborhood social cohesion, satisfaction with neighborhood safety, living environment, suicide rate, proportion of social welfare agencies, proportion of social welfare expenses) and individual factors (health, social relationships) on suicidal ideation of older adults, we conducted a multilevel logistic regression analysis. The 2017 Community Health Survey of Korea included data on 67,820 people aged 65 years or older and in 255 neighborhoods. At the individual level, the presence of suicidal ideation was associated with less education attainment, lower family income, not living with a spouse, fewer social networks, fewer social activities, more depressive symptoms, and lower health-related quality of life. At the neighborhood level, lack of social cohesion, a higher suicide rate, and a smaller social welfare budget were significantly effect related to the probability of suicidal ideation.

Abstract
In this study, a literature survey was conducted of research into the development and use of wearable devices and sensors in patients with depression. We collected 18 studies that had investigated wearable devices for assessment, monitoring, or prediction of depression. In this report, we examine the sensors of the various types of wearable devices (e.g., actigraphy units, wristbands, fitness trackers, and smartwatches) and parameters measured through sensors in people with depression. In addition, we discuss future trends, referring to research in other areas employing wearable devices, and suggest the challenges of using wearable devices in the field of depression. Real-time objective monitoring of symptoms and novel approaches for diagnosis and treatment using wearable devices will lead to changes in management of patients with depression. During the process, it is necessary to overcome several issues, including limited types of collected data, reliability, user adherence, and privacy concerns.

Abstract
Previous studies have investigated the role of inflammatory markers in suicidality of patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) or panic disorder (PD). However, few studies have investigated associations between serum inflammatory cytokine levels and suicidality. We hypothesized that MDD and PD status might be significantly associated with serum inflammatory cytokines and that we could predict levels of improvement in suicide ideation intensity using serum inflammatory biomarkers in patients with MDD and PD. For this study, 41 patients with MDD, 52 patients with PD, and 59 healthy control (HC) subjects were enrolled. Psychological measurements and serum inflammatory markers such as interleukin (IL) -6, -10, interferon (IFN)-γ, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, and C reactive protein (CRP) were examined. A total of five visits were completed during 12 weeks. After controlling for confounding factors, log-transformed IL-6 (ln_IL-6) at baseline (MDD: 0.297 ± 0.626; PD: 0.342 ± 0.723; HC: -0.121 ± 0.858; p = 0.007, >0.0017, 0.05/30) and mean ln_IL-6 (MDD: 0.395 ± 0.550, PD: 0.249 ± 0.544, HC: -0.139 ± 0.622, p = 0.002, >0.0017, 0.05/30) levels were trends towards significantly higher in patients with MDD and PD than in HC. In MDD patients, a higher level of basal ln_TNF-α was a significant predictor of ΔSSI (changes in SSI scores between baseline and week 12) even after controlling for changes of depression symptoms and baseline SSI scores (standardized β = 0.541, p = 0.002 < 0.0028, 0.05/18). In conclusion, we could predict ΔSSI using baseline inflammatory biomarkers for patients with MDD.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Electro-convulsive therapy (ECT) has been established as a treatment modality for patients with treatment-resistant depression and with some specific subtypes of depression. This narrative review intends to provide psychiatrists with the latest findings on the use of ECT in depression, devided into total eight sub-topics. METHODS We searched PubMed for English-language articles using combined keywords and tried to analyze journals published from 1995-2020. RESULTS Pharmacotherapy such as antidepressants or maintenance ECT is more effective than a placebo as prevention of recurrence after ECT. The use of ECT in treatment-resistant depression, depressed patients with suicidal risks, elderly depression, bipolar depression, psychotic depression, and depression during pregnancy or postpartum have therapeutic benefits. As possible mechanisms of ECT, the role of neurotransmitters such as serotonin, dopamine, gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), and other findings in the field of neurophysiology, neuro-immunology, and neurogenesis are also supported. CONCLUSION ECT is evolving toward reducing cognitive side effects and maximizing therapeutic effects. If robust evidence for ECT through randomized controlled studies are more established and the mechanism of ECT gets further clarified, the scope of its use in the treatment of depression will be more expanded in the future.

Abstract
Background: Changes in lifestyle factors are known to affect mood. However, there is insufficient evidence supporting the association between smoking, alcohol consumption, physical activity and depression in middle-aged women who are likely to experience rapid hormonal changes. Methods: We used a nationwide database of medical records in South Korea. 901,721 premenopausal and 943,710 postmenopausal women aged 40 years or older included in this study. Information on smoking, alcohol consumption, physical activity was identified from health examination data and followed up for the occurrence of depression using claims data. Results: Compared with never-smokers, ex-smokers and current smokers among premenopausal and postmenopausal women showed an increased risk of depression in a dose-dependent manner (aHR 1.13 for ex-smokers; aHR 1.23 for current smokers). Compared with non-drinkers, mild drinkers showed a decreased risk of depression (aHR 0.98 for premenopausal women; aHR 0.95 for postmenopausal women), and heavy drinkers showed an increased risk of depression both among premenopausal (aHR 1.20) and postmenopausal women (aHR 1.05). The risk of depression due to smoking and heavy alcohol consumption was higher in premenopausal women than in postmenopausal women. Compared with those who had not engaged in regular physical activity, those who had engaged showed a decreased risk of depression both among premenopausal (aHR 0.96) and postmenopausal women (aHR 0.95). Conclusions: Smoking and heavy alcohol consumption increased the risk of depression, and the increased risk was prominent in premenopausal than in postmenopausal women. Regular physical activity decreased the risk of depression both in premenopausal and postmenopausal women.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Behçet's disease (BD) is a rare disease characterised by recurrent mucocutaneous ulceration and chronic multi-systemic inflammation; however, its pathogenic mechanisms and biomarkers have not been fully discovered. Previously, we found that peripheral blood CD8+CD27-CD28- T cell frequency was higher in patients with BD than in healthy controls (HCs). In this study, we used global gene expression analysis to identify candidate genes that might be related to pathogenesis or developed as biomarkers in two CD8+ T cell subsets from BD patients and HCs. METHODS We performed RNA sequencing analysis in CD8+CD27-CD28- and CD8+CD27+CD28+ T cell subsets isolated from 18 patients with BD and healthy controls. Real time qPCR was used to validate the differential expression of genes in five patients with BD and healthy controls. RESULTS We found that 1,103 genes and 652 genes were differentially expressed in the CD8+CD27-CD28- and CD8+CD27+CD28+ T cell subsets of patients with BD, respectively. We validated the differential expression of COL5A1 in CD8+CD27-CD28- T cells and TRPV3 and ARHGEF10 in CD8+CD27+CD28+ T cells. Furthermore, Ingenuity Pathway Analysis indicated that eleven pathways were more active in BD CD8+CD27-CD28- T cells and more suppressed in BD CD8+ CD27+CD28+ T cells than in the HCs. CONCLUSIONS Our study is the first transcriptome analysis of CD8+ T cell subsets in patients with BD and our results provide novel genes that might be related to BD pathogenesis.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Chronic use of benzodiazepines and zolpidem (BDZ/Z-drugs) leads to dependency, cognitive impairment, and falls. Although controlled-release melatonin (Melatonin CR) may be an alternative, a switch in clinical settings has proven difficult. We investigated the factors associated with successful switch to Melatonin CR in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) and insomnia. METHODS This retrospective observational study involved 170 patients diagnosed with MDD and insomnia, and aged older than 55 years, who were treated with BDZ/Z-drug for at least the past 90 days and never before exposed to Melatonin CR. All patients were treated with a standard antidepressant therapy and Melatonin CR for their insomnia. A successful switch was defined as three or more consecutive prescriptions of Melatonin CR separated by at least one-month interval, after discontinuation of the BDZ/Z-drug. RESULTS Seventy-nine patients (46.5%) who switched successfully showed no significant differences in sex, age, education, and occupational status compared with the unsuccessful group. The types of antidepressants used or BDZ/Z-drug treatment did not differ significantly between the two groups. Fewer somatic symptoms were observed in the successful group. In the multivariate analysis, the successful group showed significantly less somatic anxiety, shorter duration from first BDZ/Z-drug use to the first antidepressant use, and shorter total duration of BDZ/Z-drug therapy. CONCLUSIONS A successful switch from BDZ/Z-drug to Melatonin CR was associated with less baseline somatic anxiety, earlier use of antidepressants, and shorter total duration of BDZ/Z-drug use, but was less strongly associated with the type of antidepressants in MDD patients with insomnia.

Abstract
The functional quality of the inflow artery is one of the most important determinants of arteriovenous fistula (AVF) success. We evaluated the association of early optimal brachial arterial dilatation with a successful AVF maturation and assessed the role of peribrachial adipose tissue in determining brachial arterial distensibility. All patients underwent a preoperative vascular mapping with Doppler ultrasound (US), and only patients who had suitable vessels for AVF creation were enrolled (n = 162). Peribrachial fat thickness was measured using US. To evaluate the degree of brachial dilatation, follow-up US was performed at 1 month after surgery, and early brachial artery dilation was defined as the change in postoperative arterial diameter compared to the preoperative value. The primary outcome was failure to achieve a clinically functional AVF within 8 weeks. Nonfunctional AVF occurred in 21 (13.0%) patients, and they had a significantly lower brachial dilatation than patients with successful AVF during early period after surgery (0.85 vs. 0.43 mm, p = 0.003). Patients with a brachial dilatation greater than median level showed a 1.8-times higher rate of achieving a successful AVF than those without. Interestingly, the early brachial dilatation showed significant correlations with diabetes (r = −0.260, p = 0.001), peribrachial fat thickness (r = −0.301, p = 0.008), and the presence of brachial artery calcification (r = −0.178, p = 0.036). Even after adjustments for demographic factors, comorbidities, and baseline brachial flow volume, peribrachial fat thickness was an independent determinant for early brachial dilatation (β = −0.286, p = 0.013). A close interplay between the peri-brachial fat and brachial dilatation can be translated into novel clinical tools to predict successful AVF maturation.

Abstract
Estrogen receptor (ER) β plays a critical role in endometriosis progression because cytoplasmic ERβ stimulates proinflammatory signaling in ectopic lesions and prevents apoptosis to promote their survival. However, the role of "nuclear ERβ" in endometriosis progression is not known. This critical knowledge gap obscures our understanding of the full molecular etiology of ERβ-mediated endometriosis progression. To fill this void, we generated an ERβ-regulated transcriptome and ERβ cistrome in ectopic lesions and the eutopic endometrium of mice with endometriosis by using a new endometrium-specific FLAG-tagged human ERβ overexpression mouse model. The integration of these omics data sets revealed that ERβ stimulated the proliferation activities of ectopic lesions and the eutopic endometrium by directly upregulating MYC and E2 transcription factor target genes and genes associated with the G2/M transition. Additionally, ERβ stimulated gene expression associated with TNFα/nuclear factor κB (NF-κB) signaling, epithelial-mesenchymal transition, reactive oxygen species signaling, IL-6/Janus kinase (JAK)/signal transducer and activator of transcription (STAT)3 signaling, and hypoxia signaling and suppressed IFNα signaling in ectopic lesions to enhance endometriosis progression. ERβ also stimulated gene expression associated with the unfolded protein response and IL-6/JAK/STAT3 inhibitory signaling and suppressed TNFα/NF-κB signaling in the eutopic endometrium to cause endometriosis-associated endometrial dysfunction. Therefore, nuclear ERβ-regulated gene networks provide critical clues to understand the molecular etiology and complexity of endometriosis and endometriosis-associated endometrial dysfunction.

Abstract
In this paper, we conduct a literature survey on various virtual reality (VR) treatments in psychiatry. We collected 36 studies that used VR to provide clinical trials or therapies for patients with psychiatric disorders. In order to gain a better understanding of the management of pain and stress, we first investigate VR applications for patients to alleviate pain and stress during immersive activities in a virtual environment. VR exposure therapies are particularly effective for anxiety, provoking realistic reactions to feared stimuli. On top of that, exposure therapies with simulated images are beneficial for patients with psychiatric disorders such as phobia and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Moreover, VR environments have shown the possibility of changing depression, cognition, even social functions. We review empirical evidence from VR-based treatments on psychiatric illnesses such as dementia, mild cognitive impairment (MCI), schizophrenia and autism. Through cognitive training and social skill training, rehabilitation through VR therapies helps patients to improve their quality of life. Recent advances in VR technology also demonstrate potential abilities to address cognitive and functional impairments in dementia. In terms of the different types of VR systems, we discuss the feasibility of the technology within different stages of dementia as well as the methodological limitations. Although there is room for improvement, its widespread adoption in psychiatry is yet to occur due to technical drawbacks such as motion sickness and dry eyes, as well as user issues such as preoccupation and addiction. However, it is worth mentioning that VR systems relatively easily deliver virtual environments with well-controlled sensory stimuli. In the future, VR systems may become an innovative clinical tool for patients with specific psychiatric symptoms.

Abstract
Zanthoxylum coreanum Nakai is a rare shrub which grows in Korea and China. Pericarp of Z. coreanum has been used as a crude medicine, but there are few researches about the pharmacologic activities. The present study was designed to investigate the anti-allergic inflammatory activities of the essential oil from fruits of Zanthoxylum coreanum Nakai (ZCO). Our findings showed that ZCO inhibited both the IgE-antigen complex or PMA/A23187-induced β-hexosaminidase release and IL-4 production dose-dependently in RBL-2H3 mast cells, and confirmed that ZCO at the tested concentrations did not show cytotoxicity to RBL-2H3 cells by MTS assay. Additionally, we found that ZCO showed the significant inhibition on LPS-induced overproduction of TNF-α, IL-6 and NO. Consistently, the protein levels of iNOS and COX-2 were also remarkably decreased by ZCO treatment. Herein, Our mechanistic studies revealed that ZCO significantly suppressed the activation of transcription factor NF-κB in PMA-activated 293T cells, and further inhibited NF-κB p65 translocation into the nucleus in LPS-stimulated RAW264.7 cells. Further investigation identified that ZCO down-regulated LPS-induced phosphorylation of MAPK (JNK, ERK, and p38) signal pathway. For incremental research, we established an DNCB-induced atopic dermatitis model in BALB/c mice, and found that ZCO remarkably inhibited DNCB-induced ear swelling and AD-like symptoms. Based on these findings, ZCO is suggested to have a therapeutic potential for the allergic inflammatory diseases.

Abstract
Lactate is an important metabolite in cellular metabolism and fluctuates in certain disease conditions including cancer and immune diseases. It was hypothesized that a decrease in lactate would modulate the inflammatory response elicited by lipopolysaccharides (LPS) in macrophages. When RAW 264.7 macrophages were treated with FX11, a specific lactate dehydrogenase (LDHA) inhibitor, the expression of the cytokines, inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and cyclooxygenase 2 (COX‑2) was downregulated due to reduced cellular lactate levels. Genetic suppression of LDHA by small interfering RNA (siRNA) downregulated the LPS‑activated expression of interleukin (IL)‑6, iNOS, and COX‑2, and reduced the production of IL‑6 and nitrites. Pharmacological and genetic suppression of LDHA inhibited the phosphorylation of p38 mitogen‑activated protein kinase. Microarray gene expression profile demonstrated that the genes involved in cell proliferation and inflammation were mainly altered by siRNA‑mediated LDHA suppression. Collectively, the present observations suggest that lactate may be an important metabolite and implicated in regulation of inflammatory response.

Abstract
In chronic kidney disease (CKD), the number of circulating neutrophils are increased, and this is usually accompanied by an increased basal activation state. However, the possible association between neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) with vascular complications has not been evaluated. We assessed the relationship between NETs, autophagy and endothelial dysfunction in maintenance hemodialysis (MHD) patients. NET formation, neutrophil elastase (NE) activities, and serum nucleosome levels were measured in MHD (n = 60) and controls (n = 20). Basal NET formation were markedly increased in MHD patient compared to controls. After PMA stimulation, MHD neutrophils showed significantly increased NETs formation response than controls. The degree of NETs was strongly associated with lower flow-mediated dilatation(%) of brachial artery even after adjustment for cardiovascular risk factors and uremic toxins. Moreover, MHD neutrophils showed increased basal autophagy activity. Interestingly, the levels of NETs were markedly augmented after autophagy inhibition, suggesting a protective role of autophagy in excessive NET formation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To improve and support medication adherence among patients with chronic diseases, especially for long-term medication, it is important to consider both their relationship with healthcare providers and their lifestyle. We tested the reliability and validity of a modified 12-item Medication Adherence Scale. METHODS We revised a 14-item measure of medication adherence, created in 2009, to a more concise and clear 12-item version, and we verified the reliability and validity of the 12-item scale. We included 328 patients with chronic diseases participating in the Chronic Disease Self-Management Program in Japan from 2011 to 2014. Confirmatory factor analysis was used to assess whether the four factors assessed were the same as the previous 14-item Medication Adherence Scale. Cronbach's coefficient alpha was used to assess internal consistency reliability, and the relationships between patient demographic characteristics and medication adherence were compared with previous studies. RESULTS The 12 items were categorized into the four factors "medication compliance", "collaboration with healthcare providers", "willingness to access and use information about medication", and "acceptance to take medication and how taking medication fits patient's lifestyle". Confirmatory factor analysis showed χ2/df = 2.6, CFI = 0.94, and RMSEA = 0.069. Cronbach's alpha for the 12-item scale was 0.78. Cronbach's alpha for the four subscales was 0.74, 0.81, 0.67, and 0.45. Higher medication adherence was significantly associated with being a female patient, living with someone else, and age 40-49 years versus age 20-29 years. These relationships were the same as in previous studies. CONCLUSIONS We modified our original 14-item scale to a 12-item Medication Adherence Scale for patients with chronic diseases, which considers their relationship with healthcare providers and lifestyle. Refinement might be needed because of the relatively low reliability of subscales. However, the modified scale is expected to contribute to more effective self-management of medication and to improving medication adherence, particularly among patients with chronic diseases who require long-term medication not only in Japan but also in other countries.

Abstract
The steroid receptor coactivator (SRC)-1 isoform/estrogen receptor (ER)-β axis has an essential role in endometriosis progression. In this context, therefore, bufalin was employed as a 'tool compound' to evaluate inhibitors of SRC in alternative endometriosis treatment. Bufalin effectively suppressed the growth of primary human endometrial stroma cells isolated from endometriosis patients compared to women without endometriosis and immortalized human endometrial epithelial and stromal cells expressing the SRC-1 isoform compared to their parental cells in vitroIn vivo, compared to the vehicle, bufalin treatment significantly suppressed the growth of endometriotic lesions in mice with surgically induced endometriosis because bufalin disrupted the functional axis of SRC-1 isoform/ERβ by increasing SRC-1 isoform protein stability, hyperactivating the transcriptional activity of the SRC-1 isoform and degrading the ERβ protein by proteasome 26S subunit, non-ATPase 2 in endometriotic lesions. Bufalin treatment elevated the apoptosis signaling in epithelial cells of endometriotic lesions. In stromal cells of endometriotic lesions, bufalin treatment increased the levels of pyroptosis markers (caspase 1 and the active form of interleukin 1β) and reduced proliferation. In addition, bufalin treatment increased the expression levels of endoplasmic reticulum-stress (ERS) markers (PKR-like ER kinase, protein disulfide isomerase and binding immunoglobulin) in endometriotic lesions. Collectively, the bufalin-induced disruption of the SRC-1 isoform/ERβ axis might induce apoptosis, pyroptosis and ERS signaling in endometriotic lesions, causing the suppression of endometriosis. Therefore, future generations of SRC-modulators could be employed as an alternative medical approach for endometriosis treatment.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study presents an empirical typology of social activity and its association with the depressive symptoms and self-rated health of community-dwelling older adults (n = 464) in South Korea. METHOD Latent class analysis (LCA) was used to classify the types of social activities. Data analyses were conducted using Mplus 7.2 program for LCA and SPSS 22.0 for multiple regression analyses. RESULTS LCA identified people who fell into one of the four activity groups: Diverse, Community Center/Disengaged, Religion Plus, and Friendship/Leisure. Membership in these four groups predicted differences in depressive symptoms and self-rated health. CONCLUSIONS Results indicate that typologies of social activity could enhance practitioners' understanding of activity patterns and their associations with health and well-being.

Abstract
Endometriosis is defined as the presence of endometrial tissue outside the uterine cavity. It affects approximately 5-10% of women of reproductive age. Endometriosis is associated with dysmenorrhea, dyspareunia and, often, severe pelvic pain. In addition to pain, women with endometriosis often experience infertility. Defining the molecular etiology of endometriosis is a significant challenge for improving the quality of women's lives. Unfortunately, the pathophysiology of endometriosis is not well understood. Here, we summarize the potential causative factors of endometriosis in the following three categories: (1) dysregulation of immune cells in the peritoneal fluid and endometriotic lesions; (2) alteration of apoptotic signaling in retrograde menstrual tissue and cytotoxic T cells involved in endometriosis progression and (3) dysregulation of oxidative stress. Determining the molecular etiology of these dysregulated cellular signaling pathways should provide crucial clues for understanding initiation and progression of endometriosis. Moreover, improved understanding should suggest new molecular therapeutic targets that could improve the specificity of endometriosis treatments and reduce the side effects associated with current approaches.

Abstract
Behçet's disease (BD) is a chronic inflammatory disease characterized by recurrent mucocutaneous, ocular, and skin lesions. Immunosenescence is associated with increased susceptibility to infection and chronic low grade inflammation. This study aimed to investigate the differences in the frequencies of immunosenescent cells in the peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) of patients with BD. PBMCs were isolated from age-matched patients with active BD (n = 19), inactive BD (n = 20), disease controls (DCs, n = 15) and healthy controls (HCs, n = 15). The frequencies of senescent CD4+ T cells (CD3+ CD4+ CD27- CD28- cells), CD8+ T cells (CD3+ CD8+ CD27- CD28- cells) and B cells (CD19+ CD27- IgD- cells) were analyzed using flow cytometry. Senescence-associated β galactosidase activity was also measured in CD8+ T cells using flow cytometry with 5-dodecanoylaminofluorescein di-β-D-galactopyranoside. Frequencies of senescent CD4+ and CD19+ cells were not significantly different between the groups. The frequency of senescent CD8+ T cells was significantly higher in active BD than in DCs and HCs. C-reactive protein and erythrocyte sedimentation rate levels, which indicate disease activity, did not correlate with increased frequencies of immunosenescent cells. Steroid treatment, specific organ involvement, and HLA-B51 status did not have a significant influence on the frequencies of immunosenescent cells. Frequencies of senescence-associated β galactosidase+ CD8+ T cells were significantly higher in active BD and inactive BD compared to DCs and HCs. There was an increased frequency of senescent CD8+ T cells in the PBMCs of patients with BD.

Abstract
Micro-cavity top-emitting organic light emitting diodes (TEOLEDs) are now receiving prominence as a technology for the active matrix display applications. The semi-transparent metal cathode plays the crucial role in realizing TEOLEDs structure. Here, we report the optimization results on Mg:Ag ratio as the semitransparent cathode deposited by vacuum thermal evaporation. The optimized Mg:Ag cathode with 1:10 ratio (wt %) shows a sheet resistance value as low as 5.2 Ω/□, an average transmittance of 49.7%, reflectance of 41.4%, and absorbance of 8.9% over the visible spectral region (400~700 nm). The fabricated red TEOLEDs device implemented using LiF (1nm)/Mg:Ag (1:10) cathode shows the voltage value of 4.17 V at a current density of 10.00 mA/cm2, and current efficiencies variation from 55.3 to 50.1 cd/A over the brightness range 2,000 - 12,000 cd/m2. The electroluminescence (EL) spectrum displays the light emission at 608 nm wavelength with a half width of 29.5 nm. The narrow half-width of red light emission is attributed to the micro-cavity effects due to the semitransparent cathode.

Abstract
Chronic periodontitis is caused by interactions between the oral polymicrobial community and host factors. Periodontal diseases are associated with dysbiotic shift in oral microbiota. Vaccination against periodontopathic bacteria could be a fundamental therapeutic to modulate polymicrobial biofilms. Because oral cavity is the site of periodontopathic bacterial colonization, mucosal vaccines should provide better protection than vaccines administered systemically. We previously reported that bacterial flagellin is an excellent mucosal adjuvant. In this study, we investigated whether mucosal immunization with a flagellin-adjuvanted polypeptide vaccine induces protective immune responses using a Porphyromonas gingivalis infection model. We used the Hgp44 domain polypeptide of Arg-gingipain A (RgpA) as a mucosal antigen. Intranasal (IN) immunization induced a significantly higher Hgp44-specific IgG titer in the serum of mice than sublingual (SL) administration. The co-administration of flagellin potentiated serum IgG responses for both the IN and SL vaccinations. On the other hand, the anti-Hgp44-specific IgA titer in the saliva was comparable between IN and SL vaccinations, suggesting SL administration as more compliant vaccination route for periodontal vaccines. The co-administration of flagellin significantly potentiated the secretory IgA response in saliva also. Furthermore, mice administered a mixture of Hgp44 and flagellin via the IN and SL routes exhibited significant reductions in alveolar bone loss induced by live P. gingivalis infections. An intranasally administered Hgp44-flagellin fusion protein induced a comparable level of Hgp44-specific antibody responses to the mixture of Hgp44 and flagellin. Overall, a flagellin-adjuvanted Hgp44 antigen would serve an important component for a multivalent mucosal vaccine against polymicrobial periodontitis.

Abstract
UNLABELLED We conducted a prospective randomized, multicentre study to compare short arm and long arm plaster casts for the treatment of stable distal radius fracture in patients older than 55 years. We randomly assigned patients over the age of 55 years who had stable distal radius fracture to either a short arm or long arm plaster cast at the first review 1 week after their injury. Radiographic and clinical follow-up was conducted at 1, 3, 5, 12 and 24 weeks following their injury. Also, degree of disability caused by each cast immobilization was evaluated at the patient's visit to remove the cast. There were no significant differences in radiological parameters between the groups except for volar tilt. Despite these differences in volar tilt, neither functional status as measured by the Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand, nor visual analogue scale was significantly different between the groups. However, the mean score of disability caused by plaster cast immobilization and the incidence rate of shoulder pain were significantly higher in patients who had a long plaster cast. Our findings suggest that a short arm cast is as effective as a long arm cast for stable distal radius fractures in the elderly. Furthermore, it is more comfortable and introduces less restriction on daily activities. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE II.

Abstract
Background Obesity is a risk factor for increased cardiovascular disease. Whether vitamin D deficiency modifies this association is unclear. Here, we examined the association of obesity and vitamin D deficiency with vascular calcification score (VCS) in incident end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted with 213 ESRD patients. Vitamin D deficiency was defined as serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) levels below 10 ng/mL, and obesity was defined as a percentage of body fat (PBF) higher than the sex-specific median value in the cohort (>26.8% for men, >36.2% for women). VCS was measured by plain radiographic film of the lateral abdomen in the standing position. Results Most ESRD patients (76.6%) had 25(OH)D deficiency at the start of dialysis. The prevalence of 25(OH)D deficiency was much higher in obese patients than non-obese patients, and it had significant inverse association with PBF (r = −0.315, p < 0.001). Abdominal aortic calcification was identified in 104 (48.9%) patients. VCS was significantly higher in obese population; 2.6 (0–23) for all patients, 4.2 (0–23) for obese and 1.0 (0–12) for non-obese patients (p < 0.001). Interestingly, vitamin D deficiency was associated with greater risk of a high VCS, especially in obese population [odds ratio (OR) 3.02, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.09-9.38)], but not with non-obese patients (OR 1.82, 95% CI 0.56-5.60). Conclusion The magnitude and direction of the association between obesity and the risk of vascular calcification may depend on an individual’s 25(OH)D level, a possible representative marker of cardiometabolic disturbance in ESRD patients. Abstract
UNLABELLED Bone mineral density (BMD) of offspring was significantly associated with their parents' BMD. Parental BMD Z-score ≤-1 was a significant predictor for BMD Z-score ≤-1 in their offspring. Peak bone mass acquisition during early adulthood is more substantially influenced by genetic factors rather than lifestyle or environmental factors. INTRODUCTION A person's BMD is affected by both genetic and environmental factors. Family history of osteoporosis or fragility fracture is a well-known risk factor for low bone mass or fracture. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the familial association of BMD between parents and offspring in Korean population. METHODS This is a cross-sectional study based on the data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (KNHANES) conducted from 2008 to 2011. A total of 5947 subjects (3135 parents and 2812 offspring) were included. RESULTS In age-adjusted partial correlation analyses, all BMD values acquired from the lumbar spine, femur neck, total hip, and whole body showed significant associations between parents and offspring. Among these associations, whole-body BMD showed the strongest relationship between offspring and parents. The narrow-sense heritability of BMD ranged from 0.203 to 0.542 in male offspring and from 0.396 to 0.689 in female offspring. Multiple linear regression analyses showed that offspring's BMD was independently associated with BMD of both parents after adjusting for covariates. Lifestyle or environmental factors including dietary calcium intake, serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D level, regular exercise, current smoking, and alcohol intake showed only moderate or no associations with BMD. In multiple logistic regression analyses in offspring aged 19-25 years, the son's risk of having BMD Z-score ≤-1 was associated with both parents' BMD Z-score ≤-1, while the daughter's risk was only associated with maternal BMD Z-score ≤-1. CONCLUSIONS Our findings confirm the strong familial association of BMD between parents and offspring in Korean population and suggest that peak bone mass acquisition during early adulthood is more substantially influenced by genetic factors rather than lifestyle or environmental factors.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the incidence of ethambutol (EMB) induced optic neuropathy prescribed at a relatively low dose of ≤ 15 mg/kg/day for the treatment of tuberculosis (TB) or Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) lung disease. DESIGN Patients diagnosed with TB or MAC lung disease received multidrug regimens including EMB at a single institution from August 2003 to July 2009. Visual monitoring was performed at baseline and at regular follow-up. The incidence of EMB-induced visual disturbances was evaluated. RESULTS Of the 415 patients included in the study, three (0.7%) developed toxic optic neuropathy over the 6-year period. Of the 289 patients prescribed a dose of ≤ 15 mg/kg/day EMB, only one (0.3%) developed toxic optic neuropathy. CONCLUSIONS The incidence of EMB-induced optic neuropathy among Koreans is estimated to be 0.7%, and can be reduced with lower doses of EMB.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Single nucleotide polymorphisms of CD11a and CD11c have been suggested as susceptibility loci in Korean patients with Behçet's disease (BD). As immunoregulatory roles of CD11c+CD8+T cells were previously observed in multiple autoimmune and autoinflammatory diseases, we aimed to investigate CD11a and CD11c in CD4+ and CD8+ subpopulation of BD patients. METHODS Peripheral-blood mononuclear cells were isolated from 21 patients with active BD, 26 patients with inactive BD, 20 patients with recurrent aphthous ulcers (RAU), and 23 healthy controls (HCs). The surface expression of CD11a and CD11c in CD4+ and CD8+ cell populations was analyzed by flow cytometry, and CD11a and CD11c mRNA and protein levels from puri ed CD8(+) T cells were analyzed using real-time polymerase chain reaction and western blot. RESULTS The frequencies of CD11a+ and CD11c+ cells were significantly increased in the CD4+ and CD8+ cell populations of active-BD patients, respectively, than that in the HCs. Additionally, both CD11a and CD11c mRNA and protein levels were significantly elevated in the CD8+ T cells of active-BD patients than that in the HCs. CONCLUSIONS The CD8+ T cells of BD patients exhibited increased CD11c expression levels. Upregulation of CD11c in CD8+ cells may contribute to BD pathogenesis.

Abstract
We performed 118 percutaneous releases of the locked trigger digits in an office setting using a specially designed knife. Thirty-five digits were locked in flexion, 79 digits in extension and the remaining four were fixed in a semiflexed position. Successful percutaneous release was achieved for 107 digits (91%), with the remaining 11 digits requiring an open surgical procedure. Although there were no persistent triggering in 98 digits with a follow-up of at least 6 months, painful stiffness at the interphalangeal joints remained in ten digits despite of physical therapy. No neurovascular injury occurred. We suggest that a locked trigger digit can be successfully released with the percutaneous technique.

Abstract
To prevent diseases associated with inadequate sanitation and poor hygiene, people needing latrines and behavioural interventions must be identified. We compared two indicators that could be used to identify those people. Indicator 1 of household latrine coverage was a simple Yes/No response to the question “Does your household have a latrine?” Indicator 2 was more comprehensive, combining questions about defecation behaviour with observations of latrine conditions. Using a standardized procedure and questionnaire, trained research assistants collected data from 6,599 residents of 16 rural villages in Indonesia. Indicator 1 identified 30.3% as not having a household latrine, while Indicator 2 identified 56.0% as using unimproved sanitation. Indicator 2 thus identified an additional 1,710 people who were missed by Indicator 1. Those 1,710 people were of lower socioeconomic status (p < 0.001), and a smaller percentage practiced appropriate hand-washing (p < 0.02). These results show how a good indicator of need for sanitation and hygiene interventions can combine evidences of both access and use, from self-reports and objective observation. Such an indicator can inform decisions about sanitation-related interventions and about scaling deworming programmes up or down. Further, a comprehensive and locally relevant indicator allows improved targeting to those most in need of a hygiene-behaviour intervention.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The adipocytokine leptin is an independent cardiovascular risk factor and exerts proatherogenic effect. Pre-existing vascular disease is an important cause of arteriovenous fistula (AVF) maturation failure. We explored the association between serum leptin, pre-existing vascular disease, and AVF maturation failure in incident hemodialysis patients. METHODS Vein samples from 62 patients were collected at the time of AVF creation. Pre-existing vascular disease was evaluated with histologic changes and immunohistochemical characteristics of cellular phenotypes in intima. AVF maturation failure was defined as an AVF that could not be used successfully by the third month after its creation. RESULTS The prevalence of body mass index ≥30 kg/m2 was 17%, and AVF maturation failure occurred in 28 (45%) patients. Patients within the highest leptin tertile showed significantly higher maturation failure rate, independent of age, gender, diabetes, and body mass index. On histologic examination, significant differences in intimal hyperplasia (13.3 ± 4.5 vs 18.2 ± 5.2 vs 30.3 ± 14.3 μm) and medial thickening (76.8 ± 23.7 vs 103.9 ± 33.6 vs 109.3 ± 36.5 μm) were observed across leptin tertiles. Similarly, medial fibrosis was most severe in the highest tertile. According to the immunohistochemical staining, most intimal cells were α-smooth muscle actin-positive, vimentin-positive, desmin-negative myofibroblasts. However, in the lowest tertile, desmin-positive contractile smooth muscle cells were also frequently observed, suggesting relatively slow phenotypic changes in this group. Furthermore, as leptin tertiles increased, the expression of leptin receptor in the luminal border of intima was significantly decreased. CONCLUSIONS Obesity-related higher fistula maturation failure rate may be partly mediated by higher leptin level-associated pre-existing vascular diseases in end-stage renal disease patients. Decreased expression of leptin receptor may be related to this association.
