Abstract
Dynamic heterogeneity in lung ventilation is an important measure of pulmonary function and may be characteristic of early pulmonary disease. While standard indices like spirometry, body plethysmography, and blood gases have been utilized to assess lung function, they do not provide adequate information on regional ventilatory distribution nor function assessments of ventilation during the respiratory cycle. Emerging technologies such as xenon CT, volumetric CT, functional MRI and X-ray velocimetry can assess regional ventilation using non-invasive radiographic methods that may complement current methods of assessing lung function. As a supplement to current modalities of pulmonary function assessment, functional lung imaging has the potential to identify respiratory disease phenotypes with distinct natural histories. Moreover, these novel technologies may offer an optimal strategy to evaluate the effectiveness of novel therapies and therapies targeting localized small airways disease in preclinical and clinical research. In this review, we aim to discuss the features of functional lung imaging, as well as its potential application and limitations to adoption in research.

Association between terminal pleural elastance and radiographic lung re-expansion after therapeutic thoracentesis in patients with symptomatic pleural effusion: a post-hoc analysis of a randomised trial. Abstract
OBJECTIVES Recurrent symptomatic effusions can be durably managed with pleurodesis or placement of indwelling pleural catheters. Recent pleurodesis trials have largely relied on lung re-expansion on post-thoracentesis radiograph as an inclusion criterion rather than pleural elastance as determined by manometry, which is an important predictor of successful pleurodesis. We investigated the association between lung re-expansion on post-pleural drainage chest imaging and pleural physiology, with particular attention to pleural elastance over the final 200 mL aspirated. DESIGN Post-hoc analysis of a recent randomised trial. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS Post-results analysis of 61 subjects at least 18 years old with symptomatic pleural effusions estimated to be at least of 0.5 L in volume allocated to manometry-guided therapeutic thoracentesis in a recent randomised trial conducted at two major university hospitals in the USA. PRIMARY OUTCOME MEASURES The primary outcome was concordance of radiographic with normal terminal pleural elastance over the final 200 mL aspirated. We label this terminal elastance 'visceral pleural recoil', or the tendency of the maximally expanded lung to withdraw from the chest wall. RESULTS Post-thoracentesis chest radiograph and thoracic ultrasound indicated successful lung re-expansion in 69% and 56% of cases, respectively. Despite successful radiographic lung re-expansion, visceral pleural recoil was abnormal in 71% of subjects expandable by radiograph and 77% expandable by ultrasound. The sensitivity and positive predictive value of radiographic lung re-expansion for normal visceral pleural recoil were 44% and 24%, respectively. CONCLUSION Radiographic lung re-expansion by post-thoracentesis chest radiograph or thoracic ultrasound is a poor surrogate for normal terminal pleural elastance. Clinical management of patients with recurrent symptomatic pleural effusions guided by manometry rather than post-thoracentesis imaging might produce better outcomes, which should be investigated by future clinical trials. Abstract
BACKGROUND Digital fluoroscopic tomosynthesis-guided electromagnetic navigational bronchoscopy (F-ENB) is a novel adjunct to ENB associated with higher diagnostic yield. The likelihood of F-ENB allowing accurate placement of a biopsy needle within a target remains unclear. OBJECTIVE This study intends to determine the accuracy of F-ENB as confirmed by cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scan. METHODS Patients undergoing CBCT-assisted ENB for lung nodule biopsy were prospectively enrolled. ENB was performed followed by digital tomosynthesis correction. Once optimal F-ENB alignment was achieved, and a needle was advanced into the expected location of the nodule followed by CBCT. The primary outcome was the percentage of "needle-in-lesion" hits, defined as needle tip within the nodule in 3 planes. Secondary outcomes were diagnostic yield, procedure and room time, complications, radiation, and distance between the needle tip and nodule. RESULTS Twenty-six patients with a total of 29 nodules were enrolled. Mean nodule size was 13 mm (±4 mm) in maximal axial dimension, 83% (n = 24) were located in the peripheral third of the chest, and 17% (n = 5) had a bronchus sign. F-ENB guidance resulted in needle-in-lesion in 21 of 29 nodules (72%). Mean needle tip-to-nodule distance for nonhits was 1.75 mm (±1.35 mm). There were no complications. CONCLUSION F-ENB resulted in a needle-in-lesion biopsy in greater than 70% of nodules despite features traditionally associated with poor diagnostic yield (size, absence of bronchus sign). Mean distance between needle tip and target for nonhits was less than 2 mm. These data suggest F-ENB alignment is accurate for small peripheral nodules.

Abstract
The maximum curvature of a steerable needle in soft tissue is highly sensitive to needle shaft stiffness, which has motivated use of small diameter needles in the past. However, desired needle payloads constrain minimum shaft diameters, and shearing along the needle shaft can occur at small diameters and high curvatures. We provide a new way to adjust needle shaft stiffness (thereby enhancing maximum curvature, i.e. "steerability") at diameters selected based on needle payload requirements. We propose helical dovetail laser patterning to increase needle steerability without reducing shaft diameter. Experiments in phantoms and ex vivo animal muscle, brain, liver, and inflated lung tissues demonstrate high steerability in soft tissues. These experiments use needle diameters suitable for various clinical scenarios, and which have been previously limited by steering challenges without helical dovetail patterning. We show that steerable needle targeting remains accurate with established controllers and demonstrate interventional payload delivery (brachytherapy seeds and radiofrequency ablation) through the needle. Helical dovetail patterning decouples steerability from diameter in needle design. It enables diameter to be selected based on clinical requirements rather than being carefully tuned to tissue properties. These results pave the way for new sensors and interventional tools to be integrated into high-curvature steerable needles.

Abstract
Bronchoscopic diagnosis and intervention in the lung is a new frontier for steerable needles, where they have the potential to enable minimally invasive, accurate access to small nodules that cannot be reliably accessed today. However, the curved, flexible bronchoscope requires a much longer needle than prior work has considered, with complex interactions between the needle and bronchoscope channel, introducing new challenges in steerable needle control. In particular, friction between the working channel and needle causes torsional windup along the bronchoscope, the effects of which cannot be directly measured at the tip of thin needles embedded with 5 degree-of-freedom magnetic tracking coils. To compensate for these effects, we propose a new torsional deadband-aware Extended Kalman Filter to estimate the full needle tip pose including the axial angle, which defines its steering direction. We use the Kalman Filter estimates with an established sliding mode controller to steer along desired trajectories in lung tissue. We demonstrate that this simple torsional deadband model is sufficient to account for the complex interactions between the needle and endoscope channel for control purposes. We measure mean final targeting error of 1.36 mm in phantom tissue and 1.84 mm in ex-vivo porcine lung, with mean trajectory following error of 1.28 mm and 1.10 mm, respectively.

Abstract
Recent marine and freshwater algal and cyanobacterial blooms in Florida have increased public concern and awareness of the risks posed by exposure to these organisms. In 2018, Lake Okeechobee and the Caloosahatchee river, on the west coast of Florida, experienced an extended bloom of Microcystis spp. and a bloom of Karenia brevis in the coastal waters of the Gulf of Mexico that coincided in the Fort Myers area. Samples from the Caloosahatchee at Fort Myers into Pine Island Sound and up to Boca Grande were collected by boat. High concentrations of microcystin-LR were detected in the cyanobacterial bloom along with brevetoxins in the marine samples. Furthermore, β-N-methylamino-L-alanine (BMAA) and isomers N-(2-aminoethyl)glycine (AEG) and 2,4-diaminobuytric acid (DAB) were detected in marine diatoms and dinoflagellates, and cyanobacteria of freshwater origin. High freshwater flows pushed the cyanobacterial bloom to barrier island beaches and Microcystis and microcystins could be detected into the marine environment at a salinity of 41 mS/cm. For comparison, in 2019 collections of Dapis (a new generic segregate from Lyngbya) mats from Sarasota showed high concentrations of BMAA, suggesting the possibility of long-term exposure of residents to BMAA. The findings highlight the potential for multiple, potentially toxic blooms to co-exist and the possible implications for human and animal health.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To quantify anti-insulin antibodies in diabetic dogs treated with recombinant human insulin and to determine if insulin dosage or duration of treatment differed between anti-insulin antibody-positive and -negative diabetic dogs. MATERIALS AND METHODS Descriptive preliminary study using serum from 24 client-owned diabetic dogs treated for a minimum of 2 weeks with recombinant human insulin, and 24 client-owned healthy control dogs without diabetes. Sera were analysed by radioimmunoassay for anti-insulin antibodies. The proportion of antibody positive dogs was compared between groups by Fisher's exact test. RESULTS Four diabetic (16.6%) and no control dogs were anti-insulin antibody positive. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE These results indicate that treatment with recombinant human insulin may induce anti-insulin antibodies in dogs, although this finding needs to be re-investigated in a larger study to investigate the impact of anti-insulin antibodies on glycaemic control.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The Australian Aboriginal population experiences significantly poorer health than the non-Aboriginal population. The contribution of environmental risk factors in remote communities to this health disparity is poorly understood. OBJECTIVE To describe and quantify major environmental risk factors and associated health outcomes in remote Aboriginal communities in Western Australia. METHODS The association between environmental health indicators, community infrastructure and reported health outcomes was analysed using linear and logistic regression of survey data. RESULTS Housing/overcrowding was significantly associated with increased reports of hearing/eyesight (OR 3.01 95 % CI 1.58-5.73), skin (OR 2.71 95 % CI 1.31-5.60), gastrointestinal (OR 3.51 95 % CI 1.49-8.26) and flu/colds (OR 2.47 95 % CI 1.27-4.78) as health concerns. Dust was significantly associated with hearing/eyesight (OR 3.16 95 % CI 1.82-5.48), asthma/respiratory (OR 2.48 95 % CI 1.43-4.29) and flu/colds (OR 3.31 95 % CI 1.88-5.86) as health concerns. CONCLUSION Poor environmental health is prevalent in remote Aboriginal communities and requires further delineation to inform environmental health policy.

Abstract
We present initial analysis and conclusions from plasma observations made during the reported "Mars plume event" of March - April 2012. During this period, multiple independent amateur observers detected a localized, high-altitude "plume" over the Martian dawn terminator [Sanchez-Lavega et al., Nature, 2015, doi:10.1038/nature14162], the cause of which remains to be explained. The estimated brightness of the plume exceeds that expected for auroral emissions, and its projected altitude greatly exceeds that at which clouds are expected to form. We report on in-situ measurements of ionospheric plasma density and solar wind parameters throughout this interval made by Mars Express, obtained over the same surface region, but at the opposing terminator. Measurements in the ionosphere at the corresponding location frequently show a disturbed structure, though this is not atypical for such regions with intense crustal magnetic fields. We tentatively conclude that the formation and/or transport of this plume to the altitudes where it was observed could be due in part to the result of a large interplanetary coronal mass ejection (ICME) encountering the Martian system. Interestingly, we note that the only similar plume detection in May 1997 may also have been associated with a large ICME impact at Mars.

Abstract
In recent papers, it has been theoretically shown that by using dual-period wire gratings, it is possible to control the relative efficiencies of the diffracted orders, regardless of the wires' material, incident polarization and wavelength. In this Letter, we experimentally demonstrate, for the first time, that by appropriately choosing the geometrical parameters of a nanometric periodic structure, it is possible to control the optical response in the visible range. We show examples of nanostructures designed to cancel out or to intensify a particular diffraction order. Such nanostructures allow a broad control over the directionality and the intensity of the diffracted light, which makes them useful for applications such as highly directional optical nanoantennas and photonic multiplexers.

Abstract
A pilot-scale fermentation was developed for an antifungal compound produced by a filamentous fungus. Replacement of galactose with lactose (20-fold cost savings) and a threefold phosphate reduction (15 to 5 g/L) improved productivity 2.5-fold. Addition of supplements--glycine, cobalt chloride, and trace elements--resulted in a further twofold productivity increase, greater process robustness, and less foaming which reduced antifoam addition tenfold (30 to <3 mL/L). Mid-cycle lactose limitations were addressed by raising initial lactose levels (40 to 120 g/L) resulting in another twofold productivity increase. Overall, peak titers increased tenfold from 45 +/- 9 to 448 +/- 39 mg/L, and productivities improved from 3 to 25 mg/L day. Despite its high productivity, process scale up was challenged by high broth viscosity (5,000-6,000 cP at 16.8 s(-1)). Gassed power requirements at the 600 L scale (4.7 kW/1,000 L) exceeded available power at the 15,000 L scale (3.0 kW/1,000 L), and broth transfer to the downstream isolation facility was hindered. Mid-cycle broth dilution with up to five 10 vol% additions of 12 wt% lactose solution or whole medium-reduced viscosity three- to fivefold (1,000-1,500 cP at 16.8 s(-1)), gassed power within scale-up limits (2.5 kW/1,000 L), and peak titer by up to 45%. The process was scaled up to the 15,000 L working volume based on constant aeration rate (vvm) and peak impeller tip speed, raising superficial velocities at similar shear. This strategy maximized mass transfer rates at target gassed power per unit volume levels, and along with controlled broth viscosity, precluded multiple dilution additions. A final titer of 333 mg/L with one dilution addition was achieved, somewhat lower than expected, likely owing to inhibition from some unmeasured volatile compound (not believed to be carbon dioxide) during an extended period of high back-pressure in the early production phase.

Abstract
The feasibility of in situ measurement device for bubble size and distribution was explored. A novel in situ probe measurement system, the EnviroCam, was developed. Where possible, this probe incorporated strengths, and minimized weaknesses of historical and currently available real-time measurement methods for bubbles. The system was based on a digital, high-speed, high resolution, modular camera system, attached to a stainless steel shroud, compatible with standard Ingold ports on fermenters. Still frames and/or video were produced, capturing bubbles passing through the notch of the shroud. An LED light source was integral with the shroud. Bubbles were analyzed using customized commercially available image analysis software and standard statistical methods. Using this system, bubble sizes were measured as a function of various operating parameters (e.g., agitation rate, aeration rate) and as a function of media properties (e.g., viscosity, antifoam, cottonseed flour, and microbial/animal cell broths) to demonstrate system performance and its limitations. For selected conditions, mean bubble size changes qualitatively compared favorably with published relationships. Current instrument measurement capabilities were limited primarily to clear solutions that did not contain large numbers of overlapping bubbles.

Abstract
Facility experience primarily in drug-oriented fermentation equipment (producing small molecules such as secondary metabolites, bioconversions, and enzymes) and, to a lesser extent, in biologics-oriented fermentation equipment (producing large molecules such as recombinant proteins and microbial vaccines) in an industrial fermentation pilot plant over the past 15 years is described. Potential approaches for equipment design and maintenance, operational procedures, validation/verification testing, medium selection, culture purity/sterility analysis, and contamination investigation are presented, and those approaches implemented are identified. Failure data collected for pilot plant operation for nearly 15 years are presented and best practices for documentation and tracking are outlined. This analysis does not exhaustively discuss available design, operational and procedural options; rather it selectively presents what has been determined to be beneficial in an industrial pilot plant setting. Literature references have been incorporated to provide background and context where appropriate.

Abstract
A new continuous sterilization system was designed, constructed, started up, and qualified for media sterilization for secondary metabolite cultivations, bioconversions, and enzyme production. An existing Honeywell Total Distributed Control 3000-based control system was extended using redundant High performance Process Manager controllers for 98 I/O (input/output) points. This new equipment was retrofitted into an industrial research fermentation pilot plant, designed and constructed in the early 1980s. Design strategies of this new continuous sterilizer system and the expanded control system are described and compared with the literature (including dairy and bio-waste inactivation applications) and the weaknesses of the prior installation for expected effectiveness. In addition, the reasoning behind selection of some of these improved features has been incorporated. Examples of enhancements adopted include sanitary heat exchanger (HEX) design, incorporation of a "flash" cooling HEX, on-line calculation of F(o) and R(o), and use of field I/O modules located near the vessel to permit low-cost addition of new instrumentation. Sterilizer performance also was characterized over the expected range of operating conditions. Differences between design and observed temperature, pressure, and other profiles were quantified and investigated.

Abstract
The parameters characterising the trap centres involved in the thermoluminescence of KMgF3:LaF3 compounds have been found by deconvolving the glow curve with the General One Trap model (GOT). For the fitting procedure the Levenberg-Marquardt method has been employed. Tm-T(stop) measurements along with initial rise measurements were performed in order to estimate the number of peaks the glow curve is made up of, and the corresponding activation energies. Instead of the Runge-Kutta method, a novel algorithm has been employed to integrate the differential equation of the GOT model, which reduces the computational time nearly 30 times with respect to the former when the glow curve is recorded with a lineal heating rate profile. The strong computational time reduction makes feasible a large number of runs with different guess values. An interesting result is that the concentration of disconnected deep traps is much less than the concentration of trap centres.

Abstract
The alpha2-adrenoreceptor (AR) is the most investigated noradrenergic receptor with regard to modulation of seizure activity. However, because of the complexity of multiple alpha2-AR subtypes and their distribution, the exact role of this receptor in modulating seizure activity is not clear. alpha2A- and alpha2C-ARs function as both autoreceptors (presynaptic) on noradrenergic neurons, where they regulate norepinephrine (NE) release, and as postsynaptic receptors on neurons that receive noradrenergic innervation, where they regulate the release of other neurotransmitters (heteroreceptor). The nonselective alpha2-AR agonist clonidine produced a proconvulsant effect on seizure susceptibility, while the selective alpha2A-AR agonist guanfacine was anticonvulsant. The effects of both alpha2-AR agonists were absent in alpha2a knockout mice, suggesting that the alpha2A-AR mediates the proconvulsant and anticonvulsant effect of alpha2-AR agonists on seizure susceptibility. To determine whether the alpha2-AR agonists were acting on inhibitory presynaptic autoreceptors to decrease NE release or on postsynaptic receptors on NE target neurons, the effects of clonidine and guanfacine were determined in dopamine beta-hydroxylase knockout (Dbh -/-) mice that lack NE. The anticonvulsant effect of guanfacine persisted in Dbh -/- mice, suggesting that guanfacine may act preferentially on alpha2A-postsynaptic receptors that regulate the action of NE on target neurons. In contrast, the proconvulsant effect of clonidine was lost in Dbh -/- mice, suggesting that clonidine may act on presynaptic autoreceptors to decrease NE release. We hypothesize that the alpha2A-presynaptic autoreceptor is responsible for the proconvulsant effect of alpha2-AR agonists, while the alpha2A-postsynaptic receptor is responsible for the anticonvulsant effect of alpha2-AR agonists. These data help to clarify the inconsistent effects of alpha2-AR agonists on seizure activity.

Abstract
Four new fermenters were designed and constructed for use in secondary metabolite cultivations, bioconversions, and enzyme production. A new PC/PLC-based control system also was implemented using GE Fanuc PLCs, Genius I/O blocks, and Fix Dynamics SCADA software. These systems were incorporated into an industrial research fermentation pilot plant, designed and constructed in the early 1980s. Details of the design of these new fermenters and the new control system are described and compared with the existing installation for expected effectiveness. In addition, the reasoning behind selection of some of these features has been included. Key to the design was the goal of preserving similarity between the new and previously existing and successfully utilized fermenter hardware and software installations where feasible but implementing improvements where warranted and beneficial. Examples of enhancements include strategic use of Inconel as a material of construction to reduce corrosion, piping layout design for simplified hazardous energy isolation, on-line calculation and control of nutrient feed rates, and the use of field I/O modules located near the vessel to permit low-cost addition of new instrumentation.

Abstract
Frozen bagged seed inoculum was prepared, thawed and tested for seven cultures. Thawing techniques were developed and other key influences on thawing rate were quantified; seed bag thawing without a water bath rarely required more than 4 to 5 h and was as short as 0.5 to 1 h for lower fill volume bags. Testing included growth of bagged seed as a function of bag fill volume (0.5, 1.0, 2.0, and 3.5 L), comparison of culture age at time of bagging, growth of bagged versus laboratory-prepared seed, productivity of production cultures derived from bagged versus laboratory-prepared seed, growth of bagged seed as a function of volume percent glycerol added at time of bagging, and growth of bagged seed as a function of frozen storage time and temperature. For each culture tested, conditions were developed such that seed tanks inoculated with bagged seed showed only minimal delay in attaining the target oxygen uptake rate (OUR) relative to seed tanks inoculated with laboratory-prepared inoculum. Although the bag fill volume did influence culture growth in some cases, bag fill volumes required were reasonable (typically 2.0 to 3.5 L) compared with laboratory seed inoculum volumes of 2.0 L. In the most remarkable example, frozen bagged seed was prepared from a second-stage seed-tank cultivation of Glarca lozoyensis, then thawed and inoculated into first-stage seed medium. It grew to the desired OUR in a similar timeframe as laboratory-prepared inoculum inoculated into first-stage seed medium. Thus, the frozen bagged seed replaced an existing laboratory inoculum preparation period of 7 days without an appreciable delay in either of the two subsequent seed-tank growth stages. Furthermore, productivities were found to be comparable for bagged-seed-derived and laboratory-seed-derived production cultivations for four different fermentation processes.

Abstract
Exact calculations of the near-field electromagnetic force on a nanoparticle exerted by the presence of a corrugated dielectric interface are carried out. The illumination of this system excites the particle eigenmodes. The calculation is two-dimensional, so the nanoparticle is actually a nanocylinder that scans parallel to the interface. This system constitutes a model of force transduction and surface topography imaging for a photonic-force microscope with signal enhancement owing to morphological resonance excitation of the probe.

Abstract
A theoretical analysis of electromagnetic forces on neutral particles in a hollow waveguide is presented. We show that the effective scattering cross section of a very small (Rayleigh) particle can be strongly modified inside a waveguide. The coupling of the scattered dipolar field with the waveguide modes induces a resonant enhanced backscattering state of the scatterer-guide system close to the onset of new modes. The particle effective cross section can then be as large as the wavelength even far from any transition resonance. As we will show, a small particle can be strongly accelerated along the guide axis while being highly confined in a narrow zone of the cross section of the guide.

Abstract
The most rapidly growing segment of the United States population is the geriatric group, especially those above 75 years of age. Hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and dyslipidemia increase with advancing years in Westernized, industrialized societies such as the United States. These disorders contribute significantly to strokes and myocardial infarctions and associated morbidity and mortality in our elderly population. The increase in these chronic disease processes with aging is related, in part, to increasing obesity, reductions in physical activity, and medications that predispose to these conditions (ie, nonsteroidal inflammatory agents and hypertension). Hypertension in the elderly is characterized by high peripheral vascular resistance/reduced cardiac output, impaired baroflex sensitivity, relatively greater systolic pressures, increased blood pressure variability, and a propensity to salt sensitivity. Type 2 diabetes in the elderly is related to alterations in body composition (ie, increased central adiposity and decreased lean body mass) and to reduced physical activity. There is an increasing body of evidence that aggressive treatment of hypertension and dyslipidemia in the elderly results in comparable, if not greater, reductions in cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in the elderly as in younger counterparts.

Abstract
We present a theory based on an exact calculation of the radiation forces on a microsized particle illuminated by evanescent waves created under total internal reflection in a flat substrate. The influence of the proximity of this interface to the particle is analyzed by a numerical simulation that addresses multiple scattering of light between the particle and the dielectric flat surface. We thus give an interpretation of the experimental results of Kawata and Sugiura [Opt. Lett. 17, 772 (1992)] and put forward a method that is capable of predicting new effects.

Abstract
Thirty-five dermatologists enrolled 256 patients to assess the safety and efficacy of ketoconazole 2 percent cream, applied once daily, in the treatment of tinea pedis, tinea cruris, and tinea corporis. Of these, 232 were eligible for efficacy evaluation based on mycologic evidence. Symptoms were assessed after four and eight weeks of treatment; relapse was assessed four weeks after the end of treatment. Total symptom scores decreased significantly during the treatment period. A marked or excellent response to treatment was observed in 82 percent of the cases. At the end of treatment 113 patients had all of their symptoms scored as absent or mild. Of these, three patients relapsed (2.7 percent) and had at least one symptom scored as moderate or severe at the follow-up visit. Only 7.2 percent (six of eighty-three) of the patients with negative findings on potassium hydroxide examination at the end of treatment showed positive findings at the follow-up visit. Three patients reported local irritant reactions to ketoconazole, two of whom discontinued treatment.

Abstract
Inadequate knowledge of opioid analgesic drugs and the incidence of psychological dependence are major barriers to nursing management of patients in pain. This study analyzed data obtained from 27 workshops on pain across 14 states (2,459 nurses) to determine current nursing knowledge of pharmacological management of pain. Results indicate that nurses lack knowledge in classification of opioids ranging from 23 to 98% correct response across seven analgesic drugs. Less than 25% of nurses correctly identified the frequency of psychological dependence. Further analysis revealed significant differences in basic versus advanced learners and geographical differences in knowledge. Implications are made for nursing education and practice.

Abstract
1H MRI permits detection of edema in the brain. In a middle cerebral artery stroke model in the cat, we found a significant correlation between an edema index based on MRI and a sensitive metabolic index of ischemia, the in vivo oxidation status of mitochondrial cytochrome aa3 determined by near-infrared reflectance spectrophotometry (r = -0.70, alpha = 0.001). This result suggests that a simple, noninvasive study using MRI can provide an index of the extent of ischemic damage in an experimental acute stroke model.
