Occurrence and ecological risks of microplastics and phthalate esters in organic solid wastes: In a landfill located nearby the Persian Gulf. CHEMOSPHERE 2023; 332:138910. [PMID: 37172626 DOI: 10.1016/j.chemosphere.2023.138910] [Citation(s) in RCA: 21] [Impact Index Per Article: 21.0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Track Full Text] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 02/12/2023] [Revised: 05/06/2023] [Accepted: 05/09/2023] [Indexed: 05/15/2023]
Abstract
Landfill sites are the main source of plastic waste. Thus, municipal solid waste (MSW) in landfills may act as a reservior of microplastics (MPs) and related pollutants such as phthalate esters (PAEs) into surrounding environment. However, there is limited information on MPs and PAEs in landfill sites. Levels of MPs and PAEs in organic solid waste disposed in a landfill of Bushehr port were investigated for the first time in this study. The mean MPs and PAEs levels in organic MSW samples were 12.3 items/g and 7.99 μg/g, respectively, and the mean PAEs concentration in MPs was 87.5 μg/g. The highest number of MPs was related to the size classes of >1000 μm and <25 μm. The highest dominant type, color, and shape of MPs in organic MSW were nylon, white/transparent, and fragments, respectively. Di (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) and diisobutyl phthalate (DiBP) were the dominant compounds of PAEs in organic MSW. Based on the finding of present study, MPs showed a high hazard index (HI). DEHP, dioctyl phthalate (DOP), and DiBP demonstrated high-level hazards for sensitive organisms in water. This work illustrated considerable MPs and PAEs levels from an uncontrolled landfill without adequate protection, possibly contributing to their release into the environment. The sites of landfill located near marine environments, such as Bushehr port landfill adjacent to the Persian Gulf, may indicate critical threats to marine organisms and the food chain. Continuous landfills control and monitoring, especially the ones near the coastal area, is highly recommended to prevent further environmental pollution.

Occurrence, seasonal distribution, and ecological risk assessment of microplastics and phthalate esters in leachates of a landfill site located near the marine environment: Bushehr port, Iran as a case. THE SCIENCE OF THE TOTAL ENVIRONMENT 2022; 842:156838. [PMID: 35750192 DOI: 10.1016/j.scitotenv.2022.156838] [Citation(s) in RCA: 59] [Impact Index Per Article: 29.5] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [MESH Headings] [Track Full Text] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 03/18/2022] [Revised: 06/12/2022] [Accepted: 06/16/2022] [Indexed: 06/15/2023]
Abstract
Plastic wastes are produced in a large amount everywhere, and are commonly disposed in landfills. So landfill leachate seems an obvious source of microplastics (MPs) and phthalate esters (PAEs) due to a huge usage as plastic additives and plasticizers. But this issue still lacks attention and the present study provides the first information on the levels of MPs and PAEs in the fresh landfill leachate of Bushehr port during different seasons. The mean levels of MPs and PAEs in the fresh leachate in all seasons were 79.16 items/L and 3.27 mg/L, respectively. Also, the mean levels of PAEs in MPs were 48.33 μg/g. A statistically significant difference was detected in the levels of MPs and PAEs among different seasons with the highest values in summer and fall. MPs with a size of >1000 μm had the highest abundance in all seasons. The most prominent shape, color, and type of MPs in the leachate were fibers black, and nylon, respectively. Dibutyl phthalate (DBP) and Di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) were the most dominant PAEs present in the leachate samples. The results of this study revealed high hazard index (HI) and pollution load index (PLI) of MPs in all seasons. Dioctyl phthalate (DOP), DEHP, DBP, diisobutyl phthalate (DiBP), butyl benzyl phthalate (BBP), and diethyl phthalate (DEP) represented a high risk to the sensitive organisms. The results of this study showed that significant levels of MPs and PAEs may release into the surrounding environment from the landfill sites without sufficient protection. This issue is more critical when the landfill sites in particular are located near the marine environments like the Bushehr landfill that is located near the Persian Gulf, which can lead to serious environmental problems. Thus permanent control and monitor of landfills, especially in the coastal areas are highly needed to prevent further pollution.

Emerging contaminants migration from pipes used in drinking water distribution systems: a review of the scientific literature. ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE AND POLLUTION RESEARCH INTERNATIONAL 2022; 29:75134-75160. [PMID: 36127528 DOI: 10.1007/s11356-022-23085-7] [Citation(s) in RCA: 20] [Impact Index Per Article: 10.0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [MESH Headings] [Track Full Text] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 01/05/2022] [Accepted: 09/14/2022] [Indexed: 06/15/2023]
Abstract
Migration of emerging contaminants (ECs) from pipes into water is a global concern due to potential human health effects. Nevertheless, a review of migration ECs from pipes into water distribution systems is presently lacking. This paper reviews, the reported occurrence migration of ECs from pipes into water distribution systems in the world. Furthermore, the results related to ECs migration from pipes into water distribution systems, their probable sources, and their hazards are discussed. The present manuscript considered the existing reports on migration of five main categories of ECs including microplastics (MPs), bisphenol A (BPA), phthalates, nonylphenol (NP), perfluoroalkyl, and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) from distribution network into tap water. A focus on tap water in published literature suggests that pipes type used had an important role on levels of ECs migration in water during transport and storage of water. For comparison, tap drinking water in contact with polymer pipes had the highest mean concentrations of reviewed contaminants. Polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polyamide (PA), polypropylene (PP), polyethylene (PE), and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) were the most frequently detected types of microplastics (MPs) in tap water. Based on the risk assessment analysis of ECs, levels of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA), perfluorodecanoic acid (PFDA), perfluorohexane sulfonate (PFHxS), and perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) were above 1, indicating a potential non-carcinogenic health risk to consumers. Finally, there are still scientific gaps on occurrence and migration of ECs from pipes used in distribution systems, and this needs more in-depth studies to evaluate their exposure hazards on human health.

Abstract
Introduction: Benzene, Toluene, Ethylbenzene, and Xylene (BTEX) as the ozone precursors have been classified as the hazardous air pollutants because of their negative effects on humans. This article presents the results of the first assessment of source identification, spatial distribution and BTEX's Ozone- Forming Potential (OFP) in Zarand.
Materials and methods: The current study was conducted at 30 geographically separated locations, in Zarand, Kerman, southeastern Iran, during the summer and winter of 2020. BTEX samples were collected using passive samplers and then analyzed using Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS). Spatial variations were surveyed using the Kriging method in GIS.
Results: Total BTEX levels (79.26±26.87 µg/m3) during the summer were greater than their levels in the winter (37.38±29.18 µg/m3). The ranking of BTEX level in all samples followed as: toluene>m,p-xylene>o- xylene>ethylbenzene>benzene. The overall OFP of 374.79±135.08 µg/m3 in the summer and 172.61±148.81 µg/m3 in the winter were more than 100 µg/m3 as recommended guideline defined by World Health Organization (WHO), with toluene having the highest potential.
Conclusion: According to the results of the present study, BTEX relative abundances in all samples were toluene>m,p-xylene>o- xylene>ethylbenzene>benzene. Despite of concerns among inhabitants and workers, benzene concentration was lower than other studied species. Control measures such as management of fuel use in motor vehicles and industries and development of green space must be adopted to attenuate the level of toluene in the atmosphere in the studied area.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Although the basic causes of obesity and cardiovascular illness have been extensively researched, little is known about the influence of environmental variables such as heavy metals on obesity development and cardiovascular disease in children and adolescents. The assumption that arsenic (As), lead (Pb), chromium (Cr), and zinc (Zn) exposure impact obesity and predictors of cardiovascular disease was explored in this study. METHOD A questionnaire was used to gather demographic information as well as certain determinants of exposure to As, Pb, Cr, and Zn from 106 children and adolescents aged 6 to 18. Physical tests (height, weight, waist circumference (WC), BMI, BMI Z-score, Systolic blood pressure (SBP), Diastolic blood pressure (DBP)), blood samples for clinical trials (Fasting Blood Sugar (FBS), Total Cholesterol (TC), Triglyceride (TG), Low-Density Lipoprotein (LDL), High-Density Lipoprotein (HDL) (, and urine samples for urinary creatinine measurement and measures of As, Pb, Cr, and Zn in urine were obtained using the Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP/MS). RESULTS The average age of the participants in the research was 11.42 ± 3.68. The majority of the participants in the research were boys (56 people). As, Pb, and Zn mean concentrations (μg/L) were greater in obese adults (42.60 ± 22.59, 20.63 ± 14.64, 326 ± 164.82), respectively. After adjusting for possible confounding factors, the data revealed that adolescents aged 12-18 years had higher levels of As and Pb (8.69 and 5.02 μg/L) than children aged 6 to 11. As and Zn metals had significant association with FBS and lipid profile (TC, TG, LDL, HDL), lead had significant correlations with lipid profile, while Cr had significant correlations with WC, SBP, FBS, LDL, TC. CONCLUSION Childhood and adolescent exposure to As, Pb, Cr, and Zn can impact obesity and cardiovascular disease markers. The current research was a cross-sectional study, which necessitates group studies and case studies to evaluate causal relationships.

Abstract
PURPOSE In this study MgAl- layered double hydroxides (MgAl-LDH) nanoparticles were prepared by a simple and fast co-precipitation method and used as a catalyst in the ozonation process to degrade diazinon from aqueous solutions. METHODS The structure of the synthesized MgAl-LDH was investigated by X-ray diffraction pattern (XRD) and field emission scanning electron microscope-energy dispersive spectroscopy (FESEM-EDX). The response surface methodology (RSM) was used to investigate the effects of different parameters including of reaction time, initial diazinon concentration, pH, and LDH dose on the removal of diazinon by MgAl-LDH catalytic ozonation process. Central Composite Design (CCD) was employed for the optimization and modeling of the process. Dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction (DLLME) method was used to extract diazinon from aqueous samples. The GC-Mass analysis was performed to determine intermediate compounds during diazinon degradation reactions. To evaluate the process performance, TOC and COD removal were measured under optimum conditions. RESULTS The highest removal efficiency of 92% was observed in optimum conditions as follow; initial diazinon concentration: 120 mg/L, pH: 8.25, LDH dose: 750 mg/L, and reaction time: 70 min. The quadratic model was obtained with a good fit. The removal of COD and TOC were 80% and 74%, respectively. CONCLUSION This process can be suggested and used in the treatment of various industrial wastewaters. Abstract
The current study aimed to consider oxidative potential (OP), its spatial distribution, and correlations with heavy metals (HMs) in street dust in Kerman city, Iran. The concentration of HMs in 35 street dust samples was detected by ICP-AES. The OP in samples was measured through dithiothreitol (DTT). The mean concentration of elements followed Zn > Cu > Pb > Cr > As > Cd. The OP value was found to be 7.17 ± 2.98 nmol/min. µg dust in the current study. A strong correlation was observed among the concentrations of As and Cr and OP values in dust samples. More values of OP were observed in the center and west of the Kerman city. According to results of the current study, it could be concluded that OP can be applied as metrics of pollution originated from different sources and human health effects. The amount of OP in the street dust in the Kerman city can be reduced through the use of clean fuels.

Abstract
The aim of the current study was to investigate the effect of well-characterized TiO2 nanoparticles on DNA methylation of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) in vitro. Maximum non-toxic concentration of nanoparticles for PBMCs was determined by MTT assay. The effect of TiO2 nanoparticles at concentrations of 25-100 μg/ml on DNA methylation of PBMCs was investigated by measuring the %5-mC alterations through an ELISA assay. The physicochemical analysis showed that the TiO2 nanoparticles were crystalline, pure and in the anatase phase. Peaks related to Ti-O tensile vibrations were observed in the range of 1510 cm-1. The size of nanoparticles was in the range of 39-74 nm with an average hydrodynamic diameter of 43.82 nm. According to the results of the MTT test, 100 μg/ml was found to be maximum non-toxic concentration. The %5-mC in treated PBMCs revealed that TiO2 nanoparticles could lead to DNA hypomethylation in PBMCs. The %5-mC difference compared with the negative control was found to be 2.07 ± 1.02% (P = 0.03). The difference of %5-mC between the 25 and 100 μg/ml concentration of nanoparticles was statistically significant (P = 0.02). The results of the current study show that the TiO2 nanoparticles cause DNA hypomethylation in PBMCs in a dose-response manner. Therefore, it is recommended to evaluate the effects of cytotoxicity and epigenotoxicity of commonly used nanoparticles before their use.

Abstract
Abstract
The removal of metronidazole (MNZ) from aqueous solutions by the electro-persulfate (EC–PS) process was performed in combination with magnetic Fe3O4@activated carbon (AC) nanocomposite. In the first step, the Fe3O4@AC nanocomposites were synthesized and characterized using energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (XRD), vibrating-sample magnetometer (VSM) and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), mapping, and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis. The effect of Fe3O4@AC, PS and EC processes were studied separately and in combination and finally, the appropriate process for MNZ removal was selected. The effect of key parameters on the EC–Fe3O4@AC–PS process including pH, Fe3O4@AC dosage, initial MNZ concentration, and PS concentration were investigated. Based on the results obtained, the Fe3O4@AC had a good structure. The MNZ removal in EC, PS, Fe3O4@AC, EC–Fe3O4@AC, EC–PS, EC–Fe3O4@AC–NaCl, EC–Fe3O4@AC–PS, and EC–Fe3O4@AC–PS–NaCl processes were 0, 0, 59.68, 62, 68.94, 67.71, 87.23 and 88%, respectively. Due to the low effect of NaCl insertion on the EC–Fe3O4@AC–PS process, it was not added into the reactor and optimum conditions for the EC–Fe3O4@AC–PS process were determined. Under ideal conditions, including MNZ = 40 mg/L, Fe3O4@AC dose = 1 g/L, pH = 3, PS concentration = 1.68 mM, current density (CD) = 0.6 mA/cm2 and time = 80 min, the MNZ removal was 92%. Kinetic study showed that the pseudo-second-order model was compatible with the obtained results. In the isotherm studies, the Langmuir model was the most consistent for the data of the present study, and the Q
max for Fe3O4@AC dose from 0.25 to 1 g/L was 332 to 125 mg/g, respectively.

Abstract
Biological aerated filters (BAFs) have high filtration efficiency due to their tolerance of hydraulic and organic shocks are suitable for the treatment of complex and sanitary wastewater. In this study, for the first time, natural media of date kernel from Bam city was used as the BAF reactor media, with a meshing sand filter separated by a standard metal grid from the natural filter section used at the end of the reactor. This can be considered an innovation in the media and filtration. Aeration in the related reactor with 160 cm height was performed bilaterally as up-flow and continuously by nozzles throughout the reactor media. In this work, the actual effluent of the hospital wastewater treatment plant was employed as the inflow wastewater to the reactor, and its organic and inorganic parameters were measured before and after the treatment by the BAF reactor. The backwashing process was also studied in three ways: bottom backwashing (TB), top backwashing (BB), and top and bottom backwashing (TBBS), to determine the amount of water consumed and to achieve the desired result. According to the results obtained in this study, the removal efficiencies of inorganic and microbial contaminants, amoxicillin and azithromycin were obtained as follows: BOD5: 98.48%, COD: 92.42%, \documentclass[12pt]{minimal}

In the backwashing process, the amount of water consumed in these three TB, BB, and TBBS methods were obtained 300, 164, and 118 L, respectively, So, TBBS method was selected as the optimal method. Based on the results obtained in this study, it is concluded that the BAF process with natural date kernel has a high efficiency in removing organic and inorganic contaminants from hospital wastewater, also the concentration of most of the effluent parameters was less or in accordance with EPA standard.

Abstract
Antibiotics have received great attention because of their abuse and potential hazards to the human health and environment. In the current work, peroxymonosulfate (PMS) was added to a cerium oxide (CeO2)/ultrasonic (US) system for tetracycline (TC) degradation. CeO2 nanoparticles (NPs) were synthesized by a simple and cost-effective method using Stevia rebaudiana leaf extract and cerium nitrate as precursors. The as-synthesized CeO2 NPs were characterized by X-ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy, and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy analysis. The effects of catalyst dosage, PMS concentration, US power, initial antibiotic concentration, and pH on TC removal were investigated. The results confirmed the formation of CeO2 NPs with a fluorite structure, spherical shape, and average particle size of 29 nm. The removal efficiency of TC was 92.6% in the optimum oxidation conditions ([TC] = 15 mg/L, [PMS] = 50 mM, [CeO2] = 0.6 g/L, pH = 6, and US = 70 W) and followed the zero-order kinetics. Experiment scavenger demonstrated both sulfate and hydroxyl radicals (SO4•-, •OH) were responsible for degrading antibiotics. Biogenic CeO2 NPs and ultrasound waves-activated PMS is a promising technology for water pollution caused by contaminants such as pharmaceuticals.

Abstract
This study aimed to investigate spatial distribution, correlations among elements and ecological and probabilistic health risk assessment in smaller than 75 μm street dust in Kerman city, Iran. Street dust samples were collected from 35 different points. Elements were detected by ICP-AES. Pollution degree was characterized through Enrichment Factor (EF), Contamination Factor (CF), Geo-accumulation Index (Igeo) and Potential Ecological Risk (PER). The health risk was assessed using the Monte Carlo simulation method. The mean values of elements were in the order of Al > Mn > Zn > Cu > V > Pb > Cr > Ni > Li > As > Co > Mo > Sb > Cd > Ag. The results of Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Hierarchical Cluster Analysis (HCA) showed that Al, As, Co, Li, Mn and V were possibly derived from natural sources (local soil), while traffic and mining activities were proposed as the main source of Cd, Cr, Cu, Mo, Ni, Pb, Sb and Zn. The order of EF and CF mean values decreased as follows: Mn > Ag > Cu > Zn > Pb > Sb > Mo > Li > Co > V > Cd > As > Cr > Ni. In addition, 73% of Cu and 35% of Zn, Ag and Mn had significant enrichment in the street dust samples. Also, Ag and Mn were categorized in the significant and very significant pollution category. In terms of the PER index, all samples could be classified at low-risk category. Ingestion of street dust was the significant route for exposure of residents of Kerman to the elements studied. No significant ecological hazards and health risks were observed from street dust in the study area in the period of the study. The improvement in the fuels quality and development of green spaces can be suggested to control natural and anthropogenic street dust pollution sources in the Kerman city.

Tetrabutyl phosphonium sulfate ([TBP]2SO4), as novel room-temperature ionic liquid (RTIL), was synthesized by a simple cost-effective method, characterized by 1H, 13C, 31P NMR and FT-IR spectrophotometry. The newly prepared catalyst was used as an efficient catalyst in some four multicomponent reactions (4MCRs) e. g., to synthesis pyridazino[1,2-a]indazole, indazolo[2,1-b]phthalazine and pyrazolo[1,2-b]phthalazine. This green method has several advantages such as short reaction time, using simple methods to prepare catalysts and products, easy operation and high efficiency of products. In addition, the catalyst can be easily recovered and reused several times with reduced average activity.

Abstract
Abstract
The aim of this research was to investigate ciprofloxacin (CIP) removal efficiency from aqueous solutions by using Fe3O4 nanoparticles @Trioctylmethylammonium thiosalicylat Ionic liquid (Fe3O4 NP@ TOMATS IL) as a new magnetic nanoadsorbent. The adsorbent was characterized by field emission scanning electron microscope-energy dispersive spectroscopy (FESEM-EDS), mapping, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), the Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD). The effects of solution pH, adsorbent dose, contact time, initial CIP concentration, and temperature on CIP removal were also investigated. In optimal conditions such as pH = 5.6, CIP concentration = 30 mg/L, adsorbent dose = 0.15 g, temperature = 30 °C, contact time = 90 min, the removal efficiency in synthetic and real wastewater were obtained 87 and 73%, respectively. Batch experiments were carried out to study the sorption Kinetics, thermodynamics, and equilibrium isotherms of CIP with magnetic nanoadsorbent. The results show that all of the above factors influence CIP removal. The Langmuir adsorption isotherm fits the adsorption process well, with the pseudo second-order model describing the adsorption kinetics accurately. The thermodynamic parameters indicate that adsorption is mainly physical adsorption. Recycling experiments revealed that the behavior of adsorbent is maintained after recycling for four times.

Abstract
Abstract
The aim of this study is to investigate the efficiency of heterogeneous Photo-bio-Fenton-like process and adsorption process for phosphorus removal from wastewater. The results showed that both of these processes can reach 98 and 92% removal efficiencies phosphate (P) and Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), respectively. The findings of kinetic and isotherm studies revealed that data of P removal highly correlated with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir isotherm. The quenching experiments determined that both hydroxyl radicals and sulfate radicals are key factors for the removal of contamination and the sulfate radicals were also the dominant radicals.

Abstract
In this study, a new and effective catalyst for the synthesis of pyridazino[1,2-a]indazole, indazolo[2,1-b]phthalazine and pyrazolo[1,2-b]phthalazine derivatives was introduced. Triethanolammonium acetate ([TEAH][OAc]) accelerates the reaction in a one-pot and four-component condensation of aldehydes, hydrazine hydrate, succinic/phthalic anhydride, and 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds. The yield of the products is high, and the reaction conditions are mild and solvent-free. Furthermore, the model reaction was conducted in the presence of triethanolammonium sulphate ([TEAH][HSO4] and triethanolammonium formate ([TEAH][HCOO]) under various conditions. In addition, the catalyst is recyclable, therefore, it can be reused several times. The structure of the obtained products was confirmed by comparing the M.P., IR, and 1H NMR. Advantages of this technique are as following:Synthesis of novel, green, and one-pot and four-component condensation (4CC) under solvent-free conditions at room temperature. The catalytic reaction is performed under mild and environmentally friendly conditions in short reaction times and excellent yields. Abstract
Abstract
This study investigated the removal of phenol from steel industry wastewater by three dimensional electrochemical (TDE) process using CoFe2O4 nanobiocomposite based activated carbon in the presence of H2O2 (EC-CoFe2O4@AC-H2O2). In this study, CoFe2O4 nanobiocomposite-foundation activated carbon (CoFe2O4@AC) was used as microelectrode, adsorbent, and activator for peroxide hydrogen. The removal efficiency of phenol and COD was investigated through the parameters of pH, contact time, CoFe2O4@AC dosage, current density, and H2O2 concentration. The highest removal rates of phenol and COD were >99% and 98%, respectively. Also, steel plant wastewater under the optimal conditions of pH = 6.5, current density = 15 mA cm−2, contact time = 25 min, H2O2 concentration of 1.0 mM, and CoFe2O4@AC dose = 0.3 g L−1. Abstract
The aim of this study was to determine the removal of ciprofloxacin (CIP) by the electro-persulfate (EC-PS) process using aluminum (Al) electrodes. The effects of variables including pH, contact time, PS concentration, initial CIP concentration and current density on the removal efficiency of CIP were studied. In order to determine the mechanisms of the EC-PS process, the radical scavenger tests, as well as energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) were performed on the sludge. The results showed that the PS process alone had no effect on the CIP removal, and the EC process alone could remove 25% of CIP after 160 min. However, the EC-PS process under the optimum conditions: pH of 7, time of 40 min, current density of 2.75 mA/cm2, CIP concentration of 20 mg/L, and PS concentration of 0.84 mM removed 90% of CIP. The effect of the EC-PS process on the actual hospital wastewater was 81% in optimal conditions. The kinetic study also showed that the second-order kinetic model was the most consistent. The oxidation process during the initial contact was dominant in the EC-PS process and, over time, the EC process was dominant for CIP removal.

Abstract
This study aimed to synthesize a ZnFe2O4@carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) nanophotocatalyst using a simple, facile, and green hydrothermal method for ciprofloxacin (CIP) removal from aqueous solutions. At first, ZnFe2O4@CMC was synthesized using the hydrothermal method, and then it was characterized. To assay the photocatalytic activity of ZnFe2O4@CMC, its ability was investigated in CIP and total organic carbon (TOC) removal by considering the effect of some variables such as initial CIP concentrations (5–30 mg/L), pH (3–11), nanophotocatalyst loading (0.1–0.5 g), and reaction time (20–120 min). The kinetic performance of the process was assessed by the pseudo-first order and Langmuir-Hinshelwood models. The concentration of CIP and TOC in the samples was determined using high performance liquid chromatography and a TOC analyzer, respectively. The influence of competitive compounds was examined on the efficiency of the nanophotocatalyst through its application for a real wastewater sample. Moreover, the reusability and chemical stability of ZnFe2O4@CMC were studied. Advantages of this technique are as follows: ZnFe2O4@CMC as a high potent magnetically separable photocatalyst is designed by a green, simple, and fast hydrothermal method. ZnFe2O4@CMC displays significant photocatalytic activity in photocatalytic degradation processes for ciprofloxacin removal. ZnFe2O4@CMC exhibits good chemical stability and reusability.

Abstract
Antibiotics, as one of the emerging pollutants, are non-biodegradable compounds and long-term exposure to them may affect endocrine, hormonal, and genetic systems of human beings, representing a potential risk for both the environment and human health. The presence of antibiotics in surface waters and drinking water causes a global health concern. Many researches have stated that conventional methods used for wastewater treatment cannot fully remove antibiotic residues, and they may be detected in receiving waters. It is reported that nanoparticles could remove these compounds even at low concentration and under varied conditions of pH. The current study aimed to review the most relevant publications reporting the use of different nanoparticles to remove antibiotics from aqueous solutions. Moreover, meta-analysis was conducted on the results of some articles. Results of meta-analysis proved that different nanoparticles could remove antibiotics with an acceptable efficiency of 61%. Finally, this review revealed that nanoparticles are promising and efficient materials for degradation and removal of antibiotics from water and wastewater solutions. Furthermore, future perspectives of the new generation nanostructure adsorbents were discussed in this study.

Abstract
Ciprofloxacin (CIP) is considered as a biological resistant pollutant. The CoFe2O4/activated carbon@chitosan (CoFe2O4/AC@Ch) prepared as a new magnetic nanobiocomposite and used for adsorption of CIP. CoFe2O4/AC@Ch was characterized by Fourier transform-infrared (FT-IR), field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), vibrating-sample magnetometer (VSM), and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area measurements. The pHZPC value of the nanobiocomposite was estimated to be 6.4 by solid addition method. The prepared magnetic nanobiocomposites can be separated easily from water by an external magnet and reused. The effect of CIP concentration (10-30 mg/L), adsorbent dosage (12-100 mg/L), contact time (5-30 min) and pH (3-11) as independent variables on ciprofloxacin removal efficiency was evaluated. Optimum conditions were obtained in CIP concentration: 10 mg/L, adsorbent dosage: 100 mg/L, contact time: 15 min and pH: 5. In this condition, maximum CIP removal was obtained as 93.5%. The kinetic and isotherm equations showed that the process of adsorption followed the pseudo-second order kinetic and Langmuir isotherm. The results indicate that the prepared magnetic nanobiocomposite can be used as good adsorbent for the removal of CIP from aqueous solution and can be also recycled.

Abstract
Phenol and its derivatives are available in various industries such as refineries, coking plants, steel mills, drugs, pesticides, paints, plastics, explosives and herbicides industries. This substance is carcinogenic and highly toxic to humans. The purpose of the study was to investigate the removal of phenol from wastewater of the steel industry using the electrocoagulation-photo-Fenton (EC-PF) process. Phenol and chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiency were investigated using the parameters pH, Fe2+/H2O2, reaction time and current density. The highest removal efficiency rates of phenol and COD were 100 and 98%, respectively, for real wastewater under optimal conditions of pH = 4, current density = 1.5 mA/cm2, Fe2+/H2O2 = 1.5 and reaction time of 25 min. Combination of the two effective methods for the removal of phenol and COD, photocatalytic electrocoagulation photo-Fenton process is a suitable alternative for the removal of organic pollutants in industry wastewater because of the low consumption of chemicals, absence of sludge and other side products, and its high efficiency.

Abstract
In this study, modeling and degradation of diazinon from contaminated water by advanced oxidation process together with a new test for effluent bioassay using E. coli were investigated. The experiments were designed based on response surface methodology. Nanoparticles (NPs) were synthesized using the sol–gel method. The shape characteristics and specifications of elements in the nanoparticles were characterized using scanning electron microscope and energy dispersive X-ray, respectively. Diazinon was measured using high performance liquid chromatography device and by-products due to its decomposition were identified by gas chromatography-mass (GC–MS). In the present study, effluent bioassay tests were conducted by defining the rate of dehydrogenase enzyme reducing alamar blue method. According to statistical analyses (R2 = 0.986), the optimized values for pH, dose of NPs, and contact time were found to be 6.75, 775 mg/L, and 65 min, respectively. At these conditions, 96.06% of the diazinon was removed. Four main by-products, diazoxon, 7-methyl-3-octyne, 2-isopropyl-6-methyl-4pyrimidinol and diethyl phosphonate were detected. According to the alamar blue reducing (ABR) test, 50% effective concentration, no observed effect concentration, and 100% effective concentration (EC100) for the mortality rate of E. coli were obtained as 2.275, 0.839, and 4.430 mg/L, respectively. Based on the results obtained, it was found that mentioned process was high efficiency in removing diazinon, and also a significant relationship between toxicity assessment tests were obtained (P < 0.05).

The surface morphology of the nanocomposite and magnetic properties of the as-synthesized Fe3O4 nanoparticles were characterised by scanning electron microscope and vibrating sample magnetometer, respectively. In this study, toxicity assessment tests have been carried out by determining the activity of dehydrogenase enzyme reducing Resazurin (RR) and colony forming unit (CFU) methods. According to CCD, quadratic optimal model with R2 = 0.99 was used. By analysis of variance, the most effective values of each factor were determined in each experiment. According to the results, the most optimal conditions for removal efficiency of acetamiprid (pH = 7.5, contact time = 65 min, and dose of nanoparticle 550 mg/L) was obtained at 76.55%. Effect concentration (EC50) for RR and CFU test were 1.950 and 2.050 mg/L, respectively. Based on the results obtained from the model, predicted response values showed high congruence with actual response values. And, the model was suitable for the experiment’s design conditions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The tourism industry which is one of the most dynamic economic activities in today's world plays a significant role in the sustainable development. Therefore, in addition to paying attention to tourism, sustainable tourism must be taken into huge account; otherwise, the environment and its health will be damaged irreparably. METHODS To determine the level of sustainability in this study, indicators of sustainable tourism were first presented in three environmental health, economic and social aspects. Then, the levels of sustainable tourism and environmental sustainability were practically measured in different cities of Kerman Province using a composite indicator, a linear programming model, Delphi method and the questionnaire technique. Finally, the study cities (tourist attractions) were ranked. RESULTS Result of this study showed that unfortunately the tourism opportunities were not used appropriately in these cities and tourist destinations, and that environmental aspect (health and environmental sustainability) had very bad situations compared to social and economic aspects. In other words, environmental health had the lowest levels of sustainability. CONCLUSIONS The environment is a place for all human activities like tourism, social and economic issues; therefore, its stability and health is of great importance. Thus, it is necessary to pay more attention to sustainability of activities, management and environmental health in planning sustainable development in regional and national policy.

Two lung development-related microRNAs, miR-134 and miR-187, are differentially expressed in lung tumors. Gene 2015; 577:221-6. [PMID: 26642897 DOI: 10.1016/j.gene.2015.11.040] [Citation(s) in RCA: 17] [Impact Index Per Article: 1.9] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 06/08/2015] [Revised: 11/18/2015] [Accepted: 11/26/2015] [Indexed: 01/04/2023]
Abstract
INTRODUCTION MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are involved in various cellular events needed for embryonic development and tumorigenesis. As some of the development-specific gene expression patterns could be observed in cancers, we speculated that the expression pattern of lung development-specific miRNAs miR-134 and miR-187 might be altered in lung tumor samples. Lung cancer is the first cause of cancer related deaths worldwide, mostly due to its late diagnosis. Therefore, finding a reliable diagnostic tumor marker, based on molecular profile of tumorigenesis, would be critical in lowering lung cancer mortality. METHODS We employed a real-time RT-PCR approach to evaluate the expression alteration of two lung development-related miRNAs in lung tumor tissues. The suitability of miRs expression alterations as lung tumor biomarkers was tested by receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis. The effect of miR-187 overexpression on a lung carcinoma cell cycle was assessed using flow cytometry analysis. RESULTS Our data revealed a significant upregulation (7.8 times, p<0.02) of miR-134 in lung tumors. However, its expression level failed to discriminate different tumor types and grades of malignancies from each other. Moreover, the ROC curves analysis did not give it a good score as a reliable biomarker (AUC=0.522, P=0.729). In contrast, miR-187 showed a significant down-regulation (P=0.008) in lung tumors. Similarly, its expression level failed to differentiate different tumor types or grades of malignancies. Nevertheless, ROC curve analysis gave it an AUC score of 0.669 (P=0.012), which suggests its suitability as a potential biomarker for lung cancer. Furthermore, ectopic expression of miR-187 in A549 cells caused a cell cycle arrest in G1 phase (P=0.013). CONCLUSION Altogether, our data demonstrated an altered expression of two development-related miRNAs namely miR-134 and miR-187 in lung tumors for the first time. Moreover we have shown that miR-134 and miR-187 expression alternation were in accordance with their approved regulatory roles, therefore these miRNAs could serve as new biomarkers with potential usefulness in lung cancer diagnosis and treatments. In addition, miR-187 expression in tumor cells could perturb cell cycle which supported its possible role as tumor suppressor.
