Abstract
BACKGROUND Microbial contamination of baby bottle food has been identified as a significant public health concern, especially in developing countries, but it remains overlooked. Therefore, this study aimed to determine microbiological hazards, compliance with hygiene practices, and critical control points of contamination in baby bottle food in Arba Minch, southern Ethiopia. OBJECTIVE To evaluate the bacteriological quality and prevalence of foodborne pathogens in baby bottle food and to identify associated factors among bottle-fed babies attending three government health institutions in Arba Minch, southern Ethiopia. METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted between February 24 and March 30, 2022. A total of 220 food samples, comprising four types prepared with different sources of materials, were collected from systematically selected bottle-fed babies attending health facilities. The data on sociodemographic characteristics, food hygiene, and handling practices were solicited by face-to-face interview using a semi-structured questionnaire. Food samples (10 mL) were quantitatively analyzed for total viable counts (TVC) and total coliform count (TCC) and qualitatively for the presence of common foodborne bacterial pathogens. Data were analyzed using SPSS; ANOVA and multiple linear regression analyses were done to identify factors influencing microbial counts. RESULTS Results revealed that the means and standard deviations of TVC and TCC were 5.3 ± 2.3 log10 colony forming units (CFU)/mL and 4.1 ± 2.6 log10 CFU/mL, respectively. Of the various food samples analyzed, 57.3 and 60.5% had a TVC and TCC above the maximum acceptable limits, respectively. The result of the ANOVA showed that there was a significant difference in the mean score of TCV and TCC among the four types of food samples (p < 0.001). Enterobacteriaceae were found in the majority of positive food samples (79.13%), followed by Gram-positive cocci (20.8%). Salmonella spp., diarrheagenic Escherichia coli, and Staphylococcus aureus were the common foodborne pathogens detected in 8.6% of tested foods. The regression result revealed that the type of baby food, hand washing practices of mothers or caregivers, and sterilizing and disinfecting procedures of feeding bottles are independent determinants of bacterial contamination (p < 0.001). CONCLUSION The high microbial load and the presence of potential foodborne bacterial pathogens in the bottle food samples analyzed indicate unsanitary practices and the potential risk of exposure to foodborne pathogens in bottle-fed babies. Thus, interventions such as educating parents about proper hygiene practices, sterilizing feeding bottles and limiting bottle feeding practices are critical to reducing the risk of foodborne to bottle-fed infants.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To explore the potentials of adding copper (Cu) filter on image quality and patient dose of adult patients underwent chest X-ray examination METHODS: Patients were divided into four groups. Group 1, patients were exposed with no added Cu filter (standard or control), group 2 a 0.1 mm Cu filter was added, group 3 acquired with 0.2 mm Cu filter and group 4 performed with 0.3 mm Cu filter. Exposure index (EI), entrance surface dose (ESD) and dose area product (DAP) were recorded from the modality and retrospectively analyzed. The visual grading analysis score (VGAS) was used to evaluate image quality. Mann-Whitney T-Test and one-way ordinary ANOVA Test were used to evaluate statistical differences including gender-based findings. RESULTS EI, ESD and DAP data for a total of 784 patients (422 male and 362 female) that underwent indirect digital chest radiography exam were collected. Image quality was maintained when adding 0.1 mm Cu filter achieved with ∼19% DAP reduction. Female showed a significant DAP reduction comparing to male registered in the same group. CONCLUSIONS Reducing dose when using indirect digital chest radiography is possible with no trade-off on image quality. No loss of image quality was reported, images were broadly comparable. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE This study highlights the importance of utilizing the additional copper filter in digital chest radiography.

Abstract
Background:
Pleural infection remains a clinical problem with high morbidity and mortality all over the world. Antimicrobial options are uncertain due to the lack of understanding of the bacteriology of pleural infection. Thus, the goal of this study was to determine bacteriological profiles, antimicrobial susceptibility patterns, and factors associated with pleural infection.
Methods:
An institution-based cross-sectional study was undertaken in Arba Minch General Hospital from 1st January to 30th November 2020. Socio-demographic, clinical, and behavioral data were collected using a pre-tested, structured questionnaire. Adducted amounts of pleural fluid samples were collected aseptically with sterile test tubes. Standard procedures were utilized for bacterial identification, and antimicrobial susceptibility testing was done using Kirby–Disk Bauer's diffusion method. Version 25 of the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) was used to analyze the data. The p-value of 0.05 was considered statistically significant.
Results:
A total of 152 hospitalized patients were enrolled in this study. The overall magnitude of bacterial pleural infection was 27.6%. The predominant bacteria isolated were Staphylococcus aureus with 34.9%, followed by Escherichia coli with 11.6%. Multidrug-resistant (MDR) isolates account for around 48.8% of all isolates, with Gram-positive bacterial isolates accounting for 71.4%. Methicillin-resistant was found in 26.7% and 33.3% of isolated Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS), respectively. One isolate of Enterococcus spp. was found to be vancomycin-resistant. All isolated Streptococcus pneumoniae and Streptococcus pyogenes were susceptible to penicillin, erythromycin, cotrimoxazole, and vancomycin. Likewise, isolated Pseudomonas aeruginosa was susceptible to piperacillin. The pleural infection showed a statistically significant association with age group less than or equal to 25 years old (p<0.001), hospital admission for more than seven days (p<0.007), chest tube drainage (p<0.021), previous history of pneumonia (p<0.029) and habit of alcohol drinking (p<0.029).
Conclusion:
The overall rate of culture-confirmed pleural infection was high, and a considerable percentage of bacteria isolates showed increased resistant to routinely used antibiotics, indicating that more attention is needed to follow the spread and emergence of drug-resistant bacterial agents.

Abstract
The levels of indoor air microbial load in hospitals are very crucial to the health of patients and health care workers and are to be regularly monitored and maintained at an acceptable level. However, this problem remains overlooked, particularly in developing countries including Ethiopia. A hospital-based cross-sectional study is designed to determine the indoor air microbial load (settle plate technique), microbial isolates (standard microbiological techniques), bacterial susceptibility profiles (Kirby-Bauer disk diffusion technique), and associated factors, in different wards of the title Hospital, southern Ethiopia. An observational checklist was used to collect relevant information related to the associated factors; descriptive and inferential statistics were applied using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS); p-values ≤ 0.05 in the multivariable analysis were considered statistically significant. The total average bacterial and fungal load of the selected wards was 1914±1081.4 Colony Forming Units (CFU)/m3 (95% CI: 1718.5–2109.48 CFU/m3) and 1533.7±858.8 CFU/m3 (95% CI: 1378.5-1688CFU/m3) respectively. The highest mean bacterial (1914±1081.4 CFU/m3) and fungal (1533.7±858.8 CFU/m3) loads were found in the male surgical and female medical wards respectively. A total of 229 bacterial and 139 fungal isolates were obtained; Gram-positive bacteria were the predominant type, 130 (56.7%), particularly the isolates of Staphylococcus aureus, 46 (20.1%). The predominant fungal isolates were Aspergillus sp., 53(38%). Percentages of multidrug-resistant (MDR), extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL), and carbapenemase producers respectively were 48.5, 26.5, and 25%. High room crowd index [p = 0.003; Adjusted Odds Ratio (AOR) 12.5 (Confidence Interval (CI) 95%: 2.42–65)], presence of damp/wet materials [p = 0.025; AOR 7 (CI 95%: 1.3–37.4)], intense room traffic [p = 0.004; AOR 9.6 (CI 95%: 1.2–79.3)], inappropriate storage of food and drugs [p = 0.008; AOR 7.5 (CI 95%: 1.7–32)], and unclean environment [p = 0.03; AOR 5.8 (CI 95%: 1.2–28)] showed statistical significance concerning the indoor air microbial loads; most of the wards in Arba Minch General Hospital (AMGH) stand high and not in an acceptable level as per the WHO and the European Commission standards on indoor air microbial load. Periodic air surveillance and infection prevention control programs are required to reduce the transmission of these microbes to inpatients, visitors, and health care workers.

Abstract
Background Intestinal parasitic infection (IPIs) is one of the major health problems in Sub -Saharan Africa where water, sanitation and hygiene practices are inadequate. Taking into account the national level implementation of intensive hand hygiene against COVID-19 pandemic and general protective effect this study assessed its effect on intestinal parasite. Objective This study aim to investigate the effect of compliance to hand hygiene practice on the prevalence of intestinal parasitic infection (IPIs) and intensity of Soil transmitted helminthes (STH) among patients attending tertiary care hospital in southern Ethiopia. Methods Observational study was conducted from June to September 2021. Data on socio demographic, hand hygiene practice and intestinal parasite (prevalence and intensity of helminthic infection) was collected from randomly selected and consented patients. Compliance to hand hygiene practice was assessed using pre-tested questionnaire. Fresh stool sample from each participant was examined by direct wet mount, concentration and Ziehl-Neelson (ZN) staining technique to detect intestinal parasite. Intensity of STH measurements was done through direct egg-count per gram using Kato Katz methods. Data analysis was done using SPSS version 25. Odds ratio with 95% confidence interval was used to measure association and p-value <0.05 was considered as statistically significant. Results The study population (N = 264) consisted of 139(52.65%) male and 125 (47.34%) female with the mean ages of 36 ±16.12(±SD). The proportion of good compliance to hand hygiene during COVID-19 to was 43.93% (95%CI: 37% to 47) and prevalence of intestinal parasite was 26.14% (95%CI:21.2% to 31.75) comprising 23.48% intestinal protozoa and 6.43% of soil transmitted helminthic infection. Gardia lamblia, Entamoeba histolytica/dispar, Ascaris lumbricoides were the common parasite in the study area with prevalence of 15.53%, 6.44%, and 1.52% respectively. Prevalence of intestinal parasite among participants with good compliance to hand hygiene group and poor compliance to hand hygiene were (14.65% vs. 35.13%)(AOR: 0.48,95%CI:0.13 to 0.68) (p = 0.002) implying that good compliance to hand hygiene can reduce the risk of IPIs by 52%. Moreover significantly lower odds of intestinal protozoa among good compliance to hand hygiene group than the control (OR:0.38; (95%CI: 0.20 to 0.71);P = 0.001. However, no significant difference in the odds of intensity of STH infection in good compliance hand hygiene and poor compliance group. The result of this study also confirmed the association between intestinal parasitic infections and younger /adolescent age, education status, habit of eating raw vegetable and figure nail status. Conclusion Good hand hygiene compliance during COVID-19 significantly associated with reduction of intestinal parasitic infection. This finding highlights the secondary protective effect of improved hand hygiene against IPIs and suggest it can used in augmenting the existing parasitic control strategies in the study setting.

Abstract
Background Ascitic fluid plays a critical role in the microbiological diagnosis of peritonitis. Drug-resistant bacterial infection of the peritoneal cavity is becoming a public health threat. However, data on bacterial profile and antimicrobial-resistant pattern of isolates from the ascitic fluid are scarce. Thus, this study was aimed to assess drug-resistant bacteriological profiles and factors associated with peritonitis in southern Ethiopia. Methods An institutional-based cross-sectional study was conducted from March 2019 to December 2019. A semi-structured questionnaire was used to collect socio-demographic and clinical data. A total of 147 ascitic fluid samples were aseptically collected and inoculated onto blood agar, MacConkey agar, and chocolate agar. The inoculated culture media were incubated aerobically and micro-aerobically at 37°C for 48 hrs. Bacterial identification was done by standard protocols and the antimicrobial susceptibility testing by Kirby Bauer’s disk diffusion method. Logistic regression was used to identify the associated factors with bacterial peritonitis. Results Of the total study participants, the overall magnitude of bacterial peritonitis was 19.05% with a total of 30 bacterial isolates. Majority of the isolates were Gram negative bacteria with predominant species E. coli 36.67% followed by Gram positive S. aureus 13.33%. The multidrug resistant isolates accounts about 43.3% while a quarter of isolated S. aureus were methicillin resistant. The bacterial peritonitis was associated with recent history of surgery [AOR = 8.724, 95% CI: (2.688–28.314)], hospitalization more than seven days [AOR = 8.990, 95% CI: (2.755–29.342)], cirrhosis [AOR = 2.751, 95% CI: (1.109–6.822)] and alcoholism [AOR = 5.802, 95% CI: (1.948–17.285)]. Conclusion Nearly half of the isolated bacteria were observed to be MDR, and this may alarm all healthcare workers and policymakers. Thus, continuous surveillance of antimicrobial resistance patterns along with associated factors is essential for regular monitoring of transmission of drug-resistant bacteria and the emergence of antibiotic resistance.

Abstract
Odonates are important biological control agents for the control of insect pests and insect disease vectors of medical and veterinary importance. The present study was conducted to evaluate the odonate fauna of Swat, Pakistan from March to October 2019. A total of 200 specimens of odonates were collected from diverse habitats. The collected specimens of the order Odonata belonged to 5 families, three families of suborder Anisoptera namely Libellulidae, Gomphidae and Aeshnidae while two families of suborder Zygoptera (Chlorocyphidae and Coenagrionidae). The specimens were categorized into 12 genera and 22 species. Libellulidae was the dominant family (n = 138) accounting for 69% of the odonate fauna. Orthetrum was the dominant genus (n = 73) of suborder Anisoptera accounting for 36.5% of the odonate fauna. The least dominant genera were Anax, Paragomphus and Rhyothemis (n = 5 each) accounting each for 2.5% of the odonate fauna. In Zygoptera, the dominant genus was Ceriagrion (12.5%) and the least dominant genus was Ischnura (6%). Pantala flavescens (Fabricius, 1798) was the most abundant odonate species in the study area recorded from all surveyed habitats. Shannon Diversity Index (H) was 2.988 and Simpson Diversity Index (D) was 0.95 for the collected odonate fauna. The highest abundance of Odonata was recorded in August, September and May while no odonate species were recorded in January, February, November and December. Lotic water bodies were the most suitable habitats with abundant odonate fauna. Anax immaculifrons (Rambur, 1842) was the largest sized odonate species having a wingspan of 53.2±1.63 mm and body length of 56.3 ± 0.4 mm. The present study shows the status of odonate fauna of Swat, Pakistan in diverse habitats and seasonsonal variation throughout the year. Further work is recommended to bridge the gaps in the existing literature.

Abstract
The present study was conducted to evaluate the diversity, distribution (C) and relative abundance (RA) of the mosquito fauna (Diptera: Culicidae) of Malakand and Dir Lower, Pakistan. Collection of specimens (n = 1087) was made during September 2018 to July 2019 at six different habitats including freshwater bodies, rice fields, animal sheds, indoors, drains and sewage waters. Specimens were collected through light traps, pyrethrum spray, aspirators and nets and subsequently killed, preserved and then arranged in entomological boxes for identification. Three genera were identified namely Culex, Anopheles and Aedes. A total of fourteen species were identified namely: Cx. quinquefasciatus (Say, 1823), An. stephensi (Liston, 1901), Cx. tritaeniorhynchus (Giles, 1901), Ae. vittatus (Bigot, 1861), An. maculatus (Theobald, 1901), An. fluviatilis (James, 1902), Cx. vishnui (Theobald, 1901), Ae. aegypti (Linnaeus, 1762) An. subpictus (Grassi, 1899), An. dthali (Patton, 1905), An. culicifascies (Giles, 1901), An. pallidus (Theobald, 1901), Ae. albopictus (Skuse, 1894) and An. annularis (van der Wulp, 1884). Cx. quinquefasciatus was found constantly distributed in the study area with RA = 16.5% and C = 100%. An. annularis was found as a satellite species, sporadically distributed in the study area having RA = 0.9% and C = 17%. Diversity indices of mosquitoes in the studied habitats were found as, Shannon-Wiener Index (2.415), Simpson Index (9.919), Fisher's Index (2.269) and Margalef's Index (1.859). A statistically significant difference was recorded in mosquito diversity in the six habitats (Kruskal-Wallis, chi-squared, H = 17.5, df = 5, P = 0.003 at α = 0.05). The present study encompasses mosquito fauna of Malakand, Pakistan with respect to diversity, relative abundance and distribution in diverse habitats and all seasons of the year. This will assist scientists working in various fields related with epidemiology, medical and veterinary entomology, ecology and allied areas of biological sciences.

Abstract
Plasmodium vivax is the most common human malaria parasite in Asian countries including Pakistan. Present study was designed to explore the genetic diversity of plasmodium vivax genotypes based on Pvmsp-3α and Pvmsp-3βgenes using allelic specific nested PCR and RFLP assays markers from field isolates in district Mardan, Pakistan. Blood samples of 200 P. vivax malarial patients were collected after taking their written informed consent. Genetic diversity in nested PCR products was determined by Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism (RFLP) utilizing Alu1 and PstI restriction enzymes for alpha and beta gene products digestion, respectively. For analysis the genetic diversity of the sub allelic variants of Pvmsp3α and Pvmsp3β genes, Chi-Square test was performed by utilizing Minitab programming software 18. The P value 0.05 was considered as statistically significant. For Pvmsp-3α genes after gel electrophoresis of digested products, four distinct genotypes were obtained from total of 50 samples; type A: 35 (70%) (1.5-2.0 kb), 12 of type B (24%) (1.5-1.7 kb), 2 of type C (4%) (0.5-1.5) and one for type D (2%) (0.5-0.65 kb) which could be characterized into 9 allelic pattern (A1-A4, B1-B3, C1, D), in which A3 remained the most predominant. For Pvmsp-3βgenes, three distinct genotypes were obtained from 50 samples; 40(80%) of type A (1.5-2.5 kb), 9 (18%) of type B (1.0-1.5kb) and 1(2%) of type C (0.65 kb) which could be characterized into 6 allelic patterns (A1-A3, B1-B2, and C1). Most dominant one in Type A was A1 alleles which were noted (46%), while in Type B, the most dominant were B1 (10%).This study is the first ever report of molecular epidemiology and genetic variation in Pvmsp-3α and Pvmsp-3β genes of P. vivax isolates by using PCR/RFLP from District Mardan and showed a remarkable level of genetic diversity in the studied genes of circulating parasites in the study area. The results of this study will contribute in future studies about the genetic structure of parasite and vaccine development against the malaria.

Abstract
The present study was aimed at comparing the brain size of mahseer (Tor putitora) in relation to their body weight and standard length, to investigate the potential impact of rearing environment on brain development in fish. The weight of the brain and three of its subdivisions cerebellum (CB), optic tectum (OT), and telencephalon (TC) were measured for both wild and hatchery-reared fish. The data was analysed using multiple analysis of covariance (MANCOVA), analysis of covariance (ANCOVA), and discriminate function analysis (DFA). We found the fish reared under hatchery conditions exhibit smaller brain size related to body weight, when compared to the wild ones. A significant (p<0.5) difference was observed in the length of CB and OT concerning the standard body length while no significant difference was found in TC of the fish from both the origins. The results of the current study highlight a logical assumption that neural deficiency affects the behaviour of fish, that's why the captive-reared fish show maladaptive response and face fitness decline when released to the natural environment for wild stock enhancement. The current study concluded that hatchery-reared fish exhibit variations in gross brain morphology as compared to their wild counterpart.

Abstract
For the proper growth of fish, it is necessary to feed the fish with a proper and balanced diet. A study was conducted to find out the effect of different protein-based diets on fingerlings of Tor putitora (mahseer). A feed with dietary protein levels of 35%, 40%, 45%, and 50% were prepared. The effect of different protein-based feed on weight gain, standard growth rate (SGR), food conversion ratio (FCR), percent weight gain, food conversion efficiency (FCE), and protein efficiency ratio (PER) was studied. An increase was observed in the growth rate with an increase in protein concentration up to 45%. The fingerlings fed a 45% protein diet shown the highest growth, followed by 50%, 40%, and 35%. The SGR value was greatest for 45% protein diet (8.56) followed by 50% and 40%, while the least values were observed for 35% protein feed (1.57). The same trend was observed for FCE. The highest PER values was observed in fishes fed 45% protein-based feed (0.65) followed by 50% (0.56), 40% (0.38) and35% (0.17). The food conversion ratio was lowest for 45% protein diet (3.41), while the greatest for 35% protein feed (16.85). It was concluded that a 45% protein-based diet was the best feed formulation for higher production of Tor putitora. However, research on the same percentage of protein diet is recommended for yearlings.

Abstract
Intoduction Patient-care equipment and inanimate objects contaminated with bacteria are a persistent problem in countries like Ethiopia, and remain overlooked. This study aimed to elucidate the magnitude of contaminations, diversity, and antimicrobial-susceptibility patterns of bacterial isolates from selected wards of Arba Minch General Hospital, Ethiopia. Methods Samples were inoculated into bacteriological media and identified by biochemical characterization, followed by antimicrobial-susceptibility tests. Results Of the 99 inanimate objects and items of patient-care equipment examined, 71 (71.7%) showed contamination: 26 (76.4%) from the surgical ward and 22 (66.6%) and 23 (71.8%), respectively, from the pediatric ward and neonatal intensive care unit. In the case of Gram-positive bacteria, coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS; 52.2%) were predominant, followed by Staphylococcus aureus (47.7%), whereas common Gram-negative counterparts were Acinetobacter spp. (28.5%) and Klebsiella spp. (23.8%). Antibiograms of S. aureus and CoNS showed 100% and 78% resistance, respectively, against penicillin. Isolates of Acinetobacter spp. showed 100% resistance to ceftriaxone and ampicillin, whereas those of Klebsiella spp. displayed complete resistance against ampicillin and trimethoprim–sulfamethoxazole. All isolates of Citrobacter spp., Enterobacter spp., Salmonella spp., Escherichia coli, and Serratia spp. exhibited 100% resistance to amoxicillin, ampicillin, and trimethoprim–sulfamethoxazole. Overall prevalence of multidrug-resistant bacteria was 57.7%. Conclusion A stringent infection-vigilance program comprising routine sampling from equipment and inanimate objects combined with antimicrobial-resistance surveillance and decontamination efforts must be instituted promptly.

Abstract
Background The incidence of hospital-acquired enterobacteria that produce extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBLs) is on the rise worldwide. Colonization of gastrointestinal tract by extended-spectrum beta-lactamase Enterobacteriaceae, a prominent causative agent, results in life-threatening infections. Objective To determine the rate of gastrointestinal colonization by extended-spectrum beta-lactamase- and carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae and also to elucidate the antibiotic susceptibility profile and associated risk factors among hospitalized patients in Arba Minch General Hospital, Ethiopia. Methodology A facility-based cross-sectional study was conducted in Arba Minch General Hospital from May 2018 to July 2019. Sociodemographic data and associated factors were collected using a pre-tested-structured questionnaire. Stool specimens were collected using sterile stool cups. Each sample was then inoculated onto MacConkey agar. Bacterial isolates were identified using various biochemical tests. Screening and confirmatory tests for extended-spectrum beta-lactamase- and carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae were performed using the modified Kirby–Bauer disc diffusion technique. Statistical package for Social Science was used to analyze the data. The P-value ≤0.05 was considered as statistically significant. Results A total of 421 hospitalized patients were enrolled in this study of which there were 240 (57%) females. The mean age of the study participants was 28.8 with SD of 15.7. Majority of participants were in the age range of 25–40 years 179 (42.5%). About 146 (34.7%) participants were found to be colonized by extended-spectrum beta-lactamase-producing Enterobacteriaceae. The predominant ESBL-producing isolates were Escherichia coli 62 (42.46%) followed by Klebsiella pneumoniae 60 (41.09%). Six (1.43%) carbapenemase-producing K. pneumoniae were isolated. ESBL-producing Enterobacteriaceae showed higher resistance against tetracycline (91.1%) and cotrimoxazole (93.84%). Colonization of the gastrointestinal tract by ESBL showed statistically significant association with regard to chronic diseases (p<0.001) and the administration of oral antibiotics after admission (p=0.020). Conclusion The overall colonization rate of the gastrointestinal tract by extended-spectrum beta-lactamase-producing Enterobacteriaceae was prominent. The extended-spectrum beta-lactamase-producing isolates exhibited a higher level of resistance against the commonly used antibiotics which further needs greater attention.

Abstract
Objective Unhygienically handled fruits and vegetables which are usually consumed in raw serve to transmit various infectious diseases. Bacteria are among the common vegetable contaminants. However, the species of contaminants and rate of contamination depends on various environmental and human factors. Hence, a cross-sectional study was conducted to assess the level of bacterial contamination and associated factors among vegetables marketed in Arba Minch town from January to March, 2018. A structured questionnaire was used to collect data regarding factors associated with bacterial contamination of vegetables. Selected vegetables were purchased and processed for examination of bacterial contamination by standard culture technique following standard protocols. All data were analyzed using SPSS version 20.0. Results A total of 347 vegetable samples were examined, of which 169 (48.7%) were positive for bacteria contamination. Cabbage (71.9%) was the most frequently contaminated vegetable. E. coli (31.4%) was the most frequent contaminant detected. Type of vegetables (p = 0.000) and market place (p = 0.039) show significant association with bacterial contamination. Bacterial contamination rate in the present study was significantly considerable. Therefore we recommend for the local health office to continuously monitor the contamination status of raw edible vegetables and take respective measures.

Abstract
Ventricular lead perforation is an infrequent but it's a critical complication of pacemaker implantation. Perforation was usually associated with the use of small-caliber active fixation leads, and can occur beyond the first few days (sub acute) or even more than a month after implantation (late). We report the case of right ventricular perforation by a ventricular fixation lead in 61 years old man detected more than two months after implantation. Radiology and echocardiography can confirm the perforation by revealing progression of the lead beyond the cardiac silhouette or indirectly visualizing the presence of pericardial effusion. However, its pathophysiology and optimal management are currently unclear.

Abstract
This paper presents ongoing actions in Dubai on patient dose monitoring in digital radiographic examinations, mammography, interventional procedures, and dental radiological procedures. The aim of Dubai Health Authority (DHA) is to move towards the establishment of local diagnostic reference levels. DHA has participated in national and regional projects under the umbrella of the International Atomic Energy Agency. The need for local radiation protection educational programmes and wider patient dosimetry monitoring and recording emerged from this work.

Abstract
Aim/Objective: To see the levels of serum MDA in type 2 DM with MI. As Serum malonaldeyhde (MDA), a stable end product of lipid per oxidation produced by interaction of free radicals with membrane phospholipids, was estimated.
Materials and Methods: 30 type 2 diabetes mellitus cases with myocardial infarction and equal members of Type 2 diabetics without complications are enrolled. Thirty healthy subjects served as controls. Quantitative estimation of serum MDA levels were carried out in all the three groups, along with fasting blood glucose and total serum cholesterol. Results: It was found that serum MDA levels were significantly higher in both diabetic groups compare to the controls (P<0.01). Within the diabetic group, the serum MDA levels were significantly high in patients with myocardial infarction (P<0.01). Conclusion: The possible reason for significantly high serum MDA levels in cases of diabetic with myocardial infarction is due to tissue damage caused by myocardial infarction resulting in increased rate of production of free radicals as assessed by lipid per oxidation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In Ramadan, misuse of hypoglycaemic agents, alterations in diet and hypoglycaemia are frequent. This study assessed whether switching to an evening administration of a long acting sulphonylurea during the 29-day, dawn to dusk fast, can maintain glycaemic control in patients with type 2 diabetes. PATIENTS AND METHODS Male type 2 diabetic patients from Bangladesh, Pakistan and India, under glycaemic control with gliclazide modified release (MR) 60 mg monotherapy, switched to evening administration of the same dose during Ramadan, and reverted to the morning schedule thereafter. The primary outcome was the difference in fasting plasma glucose (FPG) before and after Ramadan. RESULTS In 136 patients, mean (95% CI) FPG decreased by 0.01 mmol/l (0-0.2, p = 0.3) with evening medication by the end of the fast, and increased by 0.2 mmol/l (0.1-0.3, p = 0.01) after reverting to morning medication 20 days later. There were 5 (3.7%) hypoglycaemic episodes before, 3 (2.2%) during and 2 (1.5%) after Ramadan. CONCLUSION Male type 2 diabetic patients undertaking the Ramadan fast can safely maintain glycaemic control with evening administration of gliclazide MR 60 mg during the fast, and reverting to a morning schedule thereafter.

Abstract
Penicillic acid (PA) is a carcinogenic food contaminant produced by several food-borne fungi. PA was resolved as a sharp peak by reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography on a small-particle (10 micrometer) column in 3-4 min by an elution system composed of acetonitrile (AN), water and glacial acetic acid (AC) with detection by ultraviolet (UV) absorbance at 254 nm. Peak height and peak area were related linearly to the amount of PA injected over a range of 5-500 ng. Reproducibility of retention time, peak height and peak area was demonstrated. The lower detection limit was 5 ng in two elution systems [AN-H2O-AC(45:55:2), flow-rate (F) 1 ml/min; AN-H2O-AC(40:60:2), F = 1.2 ml/min] and 10 ng in a third system [AN-H2O-AC(25:75:2), F = 1.6 ml/min]. Based on the sensitivity and separation of PA from (40:60:2), F = 12 ml/min; urine, AN-H2O-AC (25:75:2), F = 1.6 ml/min. Good recovery (89-98%) over a range of 1-50 microgram/ml of PA was obtained from PA-spiked plasma samples treated first with 25% HPO3 followed by extraction with chloroform. A single peak detected either by UV absorbance or by radioactivity was obtained when plasma samples spiked with [14C]PA were extracted. Good recovery (92-105%) of PA also was obtained from spiked urine and bile samples.
