Challenging the "old boys club" in academia: Gender and geographic representation in editorial boards of journals publishing in environmental sciences and public health

In light of global environmental crises and the need for sustainable development, the fields of public health and environmental sciences have become increasingly interrelated. Both fields require interdisciplinary thinking and global solutions, which is largely directed by scientific progress documented in peer-reviewed journals. Journal editors play a critical role in coordinating and shaping what is accepted as scientific knowledge. Previous research has demonstrated a lack of diversity in the gender and geographic representation of editors across scientific disciplines. This study aimed to explore the diversity of journal editorial boards publishing in environmental science and public health. The Clarivate Journal Citation Reports database was used to identify journals classified as Public, Environmental, and Occupational (PEO) Health, Environmental Studies, or Environmental Sciences. Current EB members were identified from each journal's publicly available website between 1 March and 31 May 2021. Individuals' names, editorial board roles, institutional affiliations, geographic locations (city, country), and inferred gender were collected. Binomial 95% confidence intervals were calculated for the proportions of interest. Pearson correlations with false discovery rate adjustment were used to assess the correlation between journal-based indicators and editorial board characteristics. Linear regression and logistic regression models were fitted to further assess the relationship between gender presence, low- and middle-income country (LMIC) presence and several journal and editor-based indicators. After identifying 628 unique journals and excluding discontinued or unavailable journals, 615 journal editorial boards were included. In-depth analysis was conducted on 591 journals with complete gender and geographic data for their 27,772 editors. Overall, the majority of editors were men (65.9%), followed by women (32.9%) and non-binary/other gender minorities (0.05%). 75.5% journal editorial boards (n = 446) were composed of a majority of men (>55% men), whilst only 13.2% (n = 78) demonstrated gender parity (between 45-55% women/gender minorities). Journals categorized as PEO Health had the most gender diversity. Furthermore, 84% of editors (n = 23,280) were based in high-income countries and only 2.5% of journals (n = 15) demonstrated economic parity in their editorial boards (between 45-55% editors from LMICs). Geographically, the majority of editors' institutions were based in the United Nations (UN) Western Europe and Other region (76.9%), with 35.2% of editors (n = 9,761) coming solely from the United States and 8.6% (n = 2,373) solely from the United Kingdom. None of the editors-in-chief and only 27 editors in total were women based in low-income countries. Through the examination of journal editorial boards, this study exposes the glaring lack of diversity in editorial boards in environmental science and public health, explores the power dynamics affecting the creation and dissemination of knowledge, and proposes concrete actions to remedy these structural inequities in order to inform more equitable, just and impactful knowledge creation.

This paper highlights the urgency for public health researchers to integrate a global change perspective into their daily work. The public health community needs to answer several questions, e.g., how to weight the health of present and future generations; how to balance between the possible immediate adverse impacts of mitigating climate change vs long-term adverse impacts of global change; how to limit the environmental impacts of public health intervention; and how to allocate resources. Public health practitioners are faced with a moral responsibility to address these challenges. Key elements to ensure long-lasting, innovative global change and health solutions include (i) empowering the population; (ii) tailoring the framing of global change and health impacts for different stakeholders; (iii) adopting less conservative approaches on reporting future scenarios; (iv) increasing accountability about the health impacts of mitigation and adaptation strategies; and (v) recognizing the limits of science.

The genes for beta-myosin heavy chain and glycogen phosphorylase are discoordinately regulated during compensatory growth of plantaris muscle in the adult rat

It has been shown previously that compensatory hypertrophy of the plantaris muscle in adult rats can be induced by surgical removal of the synergistic gastrocnemius muscle. During hypertrophy, muscle transformation also occurs and there is a shift in the fiber type population of the muscle from fast to slow. Towards obtaining a better understanding of the molecular mechanisms controlling this process, we have carried out a kinetic analysis of the change in expression of two muscle-specific genes encoding the slow beta-heavy chain isoform of myosin and the muscle isoform of glycogen phosphorylase. This analysis indicated that significant increases (2-3 fold) in the steady-state levels of slow myosin heavy chain mRNA and protein did not occur until several weeks following ablation of the gatrocnemius muscle. Increases in slow fiber type paralleled the change in beta-myosin heavy chain expression. In contrast, the activity of phosphorylase, as well as the level of its corresponding mRNA, decreased approx. 1.5-2 fold shortly after (2-4 days) ablation of the gastrocnemius and levels remained low for at least several weeks. Significant changes in expression of these genes did not occur in plantaris muscle from sham operated contralateral legs. These studies indicated that changes in the expression of both genes was governed primarily by accumulation of their mRNAs. However, these genes were not coordinately regulated, indicating either that multiple control mechanisms regulate gene expression in this system or that the same controlling factor(s) regulates expression of these genes in temporally different ways.

Analysis of immune complexes in rheumatoid arthritis for Epstein-Barr virus antigens reveals cross-reactivity of viral capsid antigen and human IgG

We recently defined the immunochemical characteristics of immune complexes (IC) isolated from synovial fluid (SF) of patients with rheumatoid arthritis with the use of Western blot analysis. In the present study, we probe for exogenous antigens in the IC by examining the specificity of antisera raised against the IC. Anti-IC antisera demonstrated strong reactivity against the viral capsid antigen (VCA) of Epstein Barr virus (EBV), which was not explained by preimmune reactivity, polyclonal B cell activation, or Fc-mediated binding in the immunofluorescence or ELISA systems used to measure antibody titers. However, comparable anti-VCA reactivity was detected in antisera raised against non-rheumatoid SF. This phenomenon was not due to antigen since monoclonal anti-VCA antibody probing the IC by Western blot detected only IgG, nor to idiotype/anti-idiotype interaction since normal IgG absorbed out the anti-VCA reactivity. A monoclonal anti-VCA antibody competitively inhibited the binding of anti-IgG to IgG, and Fc fragment of IgG competitively inhibited the monoclonal antibody binding to VCA. No relationship between IgG anti-VCA antibody and IgG rheumatoid factor could be demonstrated. These data demonstrate an unexpected cross-reactivity of Fc fragment of IgG and VCA of EBV through the analysis of SF IC.

Involvement of intramural prostaglandin E2 in prenatal patency of the lamb ductus arteriosus

Release of prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) was studied in isolated ductus arteriosus preparations from immature (103 or 104 days gestation; term, 147 days) and near-term fetal lambs. Mature preparations produced measurable amounts of the compound in most cases and the release rate was 19 +/- 2 pg/(100 mg wet weight X min) at a PO2 of 3-8 Torr (1 Torr = 133.3 Pa). PGE2 release increased with the PO2 of the medium, peak values (about 125 pg/(100 mg X min)) being attained at 106-276 Torr when the oxygen-induced contraction was still submaximal. Experiments in which tissues were either contracted with excess potassium or relaxed with CO proved that PGE2 formation is independent from the contractile state. PGE2 was also released from ductus preparations lacking the adventitia, the intima, or both; however, release values were maximal when the adventitia was preserved. The magnitude of the intrinsic tone in these stripped preparations was inversely related to the rate of PGE2 formation. Reduced glutathione increased PGE2 release from the mature ductus, whole or stripped, and also relaxed hypoxic preparations; both effects were reversed by concomitant treatment with indomethacin. PGE2 synthesis tended to be greater in the immature than the mature ductus, maximal values (115 +/- 27 pg/(100 mg X min)) being observed at 6-8 Torr. We conclude that the ductus arteriosus is endowed with an enzyme system for the synthesis of PGE2 whose function accords with an effector role of the compound in the regulation of tone. These findings, together with the potent relaxation exerted by PGE2 at low PO2, indicate that the locally generated prostaglandin is well suited for keeping the ductus patent in the fetus.

Mechanisms of fever induced by recombinant human interferon

Since the early trials using human interferon (hIFN) derived from blood leukocytes or cell lines, fever has been a prominent component of IFN therapy. Human protein impurities might account for the fever to cell-derived hIFN, but recombinant hIFN, free of extraneous human proteins, has produced fever in nearly all recipients during clinical trials. Our present studies were carried out to determine the mechanisms of fever due to recombinant hIFN currently being used in humans. Because recombinant hIFN is produced in Escherichia coli, in these experiments we considered contaminating endotoxin as the cause of fever. Polymyxin B, which blocks endotoxin, had no effect on the pyrogenicity of hIFN in rabbits. In addition, hIFN injected into an endotoxin-resistant strain of mice produced fever. The pyrogenicity of hIFN does not appear to involve production of leukocytic pyrogen (LP), since no circulating LP was detected in rabbits during IFN fever. Furthermore, human mononuclear cells incubated with hIFN in vitro at 10(4)-10(6) U/ml did not release LP. However, hIFN stimulated prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) release from rabbit hypothalamic tissue in vitro. Intracerebroventricular injection of hIFN into the awake cat also produced fever and a rise in PGE2 levels in the cerebrospinal fluid; both effects were reversed by treatment with indomethacin. We conclude that the fever of recombinant hIFN is not due to endotoxin but that hIFN is intrinsically pyrogenic by inducing PGE2 in the hypothalamus.

Cytochrome P 450-linked monooxygenase: involvement in the lamb ductus arteriosus

CO and metyrapone were tested on isolated ductus arteriosus preparations from mature fetal lambs equilibrated at low (4-12 Torr) and high (511-712 Torr) O2 partial pressure (PO2). CO completely reversed the contractile tension of the ductus at either PO2 value and was equally effective in the absence and presence of indomethacin. CO relaxation still occurred when the tissue was exposed to a gas mixture having a CO-to-O2 ratio of 0.27. The inhibitory effect of CO on the O2-contracted ductus was variably reversed by light. Metyrapone was also a relaxant agent, and its action was greater at low than at high PO2. Unlike the lamb ductus, the O2-constricted guinea pig ductus did not respond to CO (maximum CO-to-O2 ratio around 1), whereas it was relaxed by metyrapone. These findings implicate a cytochrome P450-catalyzed enzymic process in the maintenance of muscle tone of the lamb ductus arteriosus and in the contractile response of the vessel to O2.
