Abstract
Varietal volatile compounds are characteristic of each variety of grapes and come from the skins of the grapes. This work focuses on the development of a methodology for the analysis of free compounds in grapes from Trincadeira, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Castelão and Tinta Barroca from the 2021 and 2022 harvests, using HS-SPME-GC × GC-TOFMS. To achieve this purpose, a previous optimization step of sample preparation was implemented, with the optimized conditions being 4 g of grapes, 2 g of NaCl, and 2 mL of H2O. The extraction conditions were also optimized, and it was observed that performing the extraction for 40 min at 60 °C was the best for identifying more varietal compounds. The fiber used was a triple fiber of carboxen/divinylbenzene/polydimethylsiloxane (CAR/DVB/PDMS). In addition to the sample preparation, the analytical conditions were also optimized, enabling the adequate separation of analytes. Using the optimized methodology, it was possible to identify fifty-two free volatile compounds, including seventeen monoterpenes, twenty-eight sesquiterpenes, and seven C13-norisoprenoids. It was observed that in 2021, more free varietal volatile compounds were identifiable compared to 2022. According to the results obtained through a linear discriminant analysis (LDA), the differences in volatile varietal signature are observed both among different grape varieties and across different years.

Abstract
Fingerprints are unique patterns used as biometric keys because they allow an individual to be unambiguously identified, making their application in the forensic field a common practice. The design of a system that can match the details of different images is still an open problem, especially when applied to large databases or, to real-time applications in forensic scenarios using mobile devices. Fingerprints collected at a crime scene are often manually processed to find those that are relevant to solving the crime. This work proposes an efficient methodology that can be applied in real time to reduce the manual work in crime scene investigations that consumes time and human resources. The proposed methodology includes four steps: (i) image pre-processing using oriented Gabor filters; (ii) the extraction of minutiae using a variant of the Crossing Numbers method which include a novel ROI definition through convex hull and erosion followed by replacing two or more very close minutiae with an average minutiae; (iii) the creation of a model that represents each minutia through the characteristics of a set of polygons including neighboring minutiae; (iv) the individual search of a match for each minutia in different images using metrics on the absolute and relative errors. While in the literature most methodologies look to validate the entire fingerprint model, connecting the minutiae or using minutiae triplets, we validate each minutia individually using n-vertex polygons whose vertices are neighbor minutiae that surround the reference. Our method also reveals robustness against false minutiae since several polygons are used to represent the same minutia, there is a possibility that even if there are false minutia, the true polygon is present and identified; in addition, our method is immune to rotations and translations. The results show that the proposed methodology can be applied in real time in standard hardware implementation, with images of arbitrary orientations.

Abstract
Conventional conservation techniques such as drying, salting or freezing do not allow for preserving the original characteristics of seaweeds. The present work aims to study the impact of minimal processing, in particular "Modified Atmosphere Packaging" (MAP), on the physicochemical characteristics and food safety of two seaweed species, "laver" (Porphyra umbilicalis) and "sea-lettuce" (Ulva lactuca), stored at 6 °C for 15 days. Different parameters were evaluated using analytical methods, namely the composition of headspace gases, color, texture, microorganisms, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The main findings of this study were that the MAP treatment was able to inhibit the respiration rate of minimally processed seaweeds, also preserving their color and texture. There was a remarkable reduction in the microbial load for P. umbilicalis treated under modified and vacuum atmospheres, and U. lactuca exhibited relatively steady values with no notable differences between the treatments and the control. Therefore, during the 15-day study period, both seaweeds met the requirements for food safety. GC-TOF-MS allowed to conclude that both MAP and vacuum treatments were more efficient in maintaining the odor characteristics of U. lactuca compared to P. umbilicalis with no significant differences throughout the storage days. Metabolic responses to diverse sources of abiotic stress seemed to account for most of the changes observed.

Abstract
Human population growth has led to an increased release of chemical contaminants into aquatic environments. Emerging chemical contaminants (ECCs) are of increasing concern because they can affect non-target organisms in aquatic ecosystems. The application of anticancer drugs is increasing because of enhanced cancer rates and use of chemotherapy. We assessed the impacts of two widely used anticancer drugs known for their distinct modes of action, namely 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) and doxorubicin (DOX), on the freshwater rotifer Brachionus calyciflorus across generations. Rotifer mortality (24 h) and population growth (48 h) were assessed to determine initial lethal and sub-lethal effects. Exposure of rotifers to 5-FU (up to 200 mg L-1) did not cause mortality, while DOX caused mortality at high concentrations (EC50 = 15.6 mg L-1). Effects of 5-FU on population growth rate was higher than DOX (5-FU EC50 =10.49 µg L-1, DOX EC50 = 8.78 mg L-1). The effects of the drugs in binary mixture on population growth rates were dose dependent; significant antagonistic effects were found when 5-FU was present in the mixture at high concentrations. Finally, a transgenerational assay for five generations revealed that rotifers were able to recover their population growth rate after fourth generation when exposed to 5-FU; however, population became non-viable after the second generation of exposure to DOX. At the cellular level, accumulation of reactive oxygen species and plasma membrane damage were observed at EC10 and increased at EC50 for both drugs. After exposure of rotifers to 5-FU across generations, there were signs of oxidative stress recovery, as shown by a decrease in ROS accumulation and plasma membrane damage. Our results showed for the first time that the adverse effects of anticancer drugs on freshwater rotifer populations are drug and dose dependent and can persist or be attenuated along generations.

Abstract
The role of the human immune system as a factor in the aging process has led to extensive research in the field of infection biology and bioinformatics. Cell-based mathematical models have previously been used to simulate the immune system in response to pathogens. A variety of cells, such as activated and resting macrophages, plasma cells, antibodies, helper T cells, T-lymphocytes, and B-lymphocytes, have already been simulated by mathematical models. This work aims to incorporate cytokines in these mathematical models to create a more comprehensive simulation that can predict cytokine levels in response to a Gram-positive bacterium, S. aureus. To accomplish this, the cytokines Tumor Necrosis Factor Alpha (TNF-α), Interleukin 6 (IL-6), Interleukin 8 (IL-8), and Interleukin 10 (IL-10) were studied to quantify the relationship between cytokine release from macrophages and the concentration of the pathogen, S. aureus ex vivo. The results of the simulation were compared to ex vivo human whole blood data to test its accuracy. The future expansion of this model may provide a clearer image of the various interactions within the immune system and this improved model of the immune system may also facilitate a better understanding of the mechanisms that lead to the degradation of the immune system during the aging process.

Abstract
This study explores different energy consumption vectors during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic in Portugal. Most of the workforce started working from home and resource consumption significantly shifted towards the domestic sector. The ensuing confinement protocols caused a shift in everyday life, which in turn significantly altered the energy supply and demand landscape. This event, although catastrophic in terms of loss of human life and economic development, can provide us with valuable data to study the potential of new strategies to achieve EU 2050 Energy goals. It was investigated whether the pandemic has opened a path and provided us with a partial answer to decarbonization in the form of home office practices as a possible energy efficiency measure. The present study shows that, in Portugal, there was a 15.7% reduction of primary energy consumption (accounting for electricity, natural gas and transport fuels) compared to 2019. The data suggest that actions targeting reduced mobility, such as home office practices and the decentralization of the workforce, could be a relevant energy efficiency measure.

Background
Imaging with 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (18F-FDG) positron emission tomography (PET) is used as part of diagnosis and monitoring response to therapy in patients with cardiac sarcoidosis. In order to supress myocardial uptake of 18F-FDG patients prepare with a low carbohydrate diet followed by an 18-hour overnight fast. Failure to comply with the protocol results in diffuse myocardial 18F-FDG uptake which confounds diagnostic interpretation.
Purpose
To assess if point of care blood ketones could be used as a marker of dietary compliance and association with suppression of myocardial 18F-FDG uptake on PET scan.
Method
Patients (n = 26, 57 ± 4 years, 65% Male) from a single centre were instructed to follow standard preparation protocol prior to 18F-FDG PET/CT. After confirmation of dietary compliance, blood glucose and blood ketones were recorded using point of care devices. Images were graded based on the pattern of myocardial 18F-FDG uptake.
Results
There was no clear correlation between blood ketones in relation to dietary compliance or myocardial 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose uptake. In those with myocardial 18F-FDG uptake maximum standardized uptake value (SUV max) within the myocardium ranged from 2.3 to 9.8 (Mean 5.3) and ketone from 0.1 – 0.7 (normal <0.6).
Non-diabetic patients and those on steroids achieved adequate fasting glucose without significant rise in blood ketones. 60% of diabetic patients demonstrated mildly elevated ketones between 0.6-1.5mmol/L.
Conclusion
Current protocol with low carbohydrate diet and 18-hour fast achieves adequate quality of images in majority of patients, without significant change in blood ketones. Therefore, blood ketones cannot be used to confirm dietary compliance. Diabetic patients on insulin may benefit from ketone measurement due to risk of diabetic ketoacidosis.

Abstract
Primary autosomal recessive microcephaly and Seckel syndrome spectrum disorders (MCPH-SCKS) include a heterogeneous group of autosomal recessive inherited diseases characterized by primary (congenital) microcephaly, the absence of visceral abnormalities, and a variable degree of cognitive impairment, short stature and facial dysmorphism. Recently, biallelic variants in the nuclear pore complex (NPC) component nucleoporin 85 gene (NUP85) were reported to cause steroid-resistant nephrotic syndrome (SRNS). Here, we report biallelic variants in NUP85 in two pedigrees with an MCPH-SCKS phenotype spectrum without SRNS, thereby expanding the phenotypic spectrum of NUP85-linked diseases. Structural analysis predicts the identified NUP85 variants cause conformational changes that could have an effect on NPC architecture or on its interaction with other NUPs. We show that mutant NUP85 is, however, associated with a reduced number of NPCs but unaltered nucleocytoplasmic compartmentalization, abnormal mitotic spindle morphology, and decreased cell viability and proliferation in one patient's cells. Our results also indicate the link of common cellular mechanisms involved in MCPH-SCKS spectrum disorders and NUP85-associated diseases. In addition to the previous studies, our results broaden the phenotypic spectrum of NUP85-linked human disease and propose a role for NUP85 in nervous system development.

Abstract
Nanotechnology has become one of the fastest growing industries in the current century because nanomaterials (NMs) are present in an ever-expanding range of consumer products increasing the chance of their release into natural environments. In this study, the impacts of two metal nanoparticles (Ag-NPs and CuO-NPs) and their equivalent ionic forms (Ag+ and Cu2+) were assessed on the lentic freshwater rotifer Brachionus calyciflorus and on its ability to adapt and recover through generations. In our study, Ag-NPs and CuO-NPs inhibited the rotifer population growth rate and caused mortality at low concentrations (< 100 μg L-1). Ag-NPs and CuO-NPs decreased in the medium when organisms were present (48 h exposure: 51.1 % and 66.9 %, respectively), similarly Ag+ and Cu2+ also decreased from medium in presence of the organisms (48 h: 35.2 % and 47.3 %, respectively); although the metal concentrations removed from the medium were higher for nanoparticles than metal ions, metal ions showed higher effects then their respective nanoparticle forms. Rotifer populations exposed for 4 generations to the toxicants were able to recover the population growth rate, but some rotifers showed developmental delay and inability to reproduce even after the removal of the toxicants. Intracellular accumulation of reactive oxygen species as well as plasma membrane damage were found in the rotifers at concentrations corresponding to EC10 (Ag-NPs = 1.7 μg L-1, Ag+ = 4.5 μg L-1, CuO-NPs = 46.9 μg L-1, Cu2+ = 35 μg L-1) of the population growth rate. Our results showed, for the first time, that effects of metal nanoparticles and metal ions on rotifer populations may persist along several generations. This should be taken into account when assessing risks of metal nanoparticles in freshwaters.

Associations between the proportion of fat-free mass loss during weight loss, changes in appetite, and subsequent weight change: results from a randomized 2-stage dietary intervention trial. Abstract
BACKGROUND Dynamic changes in body composition which occur during weight loss may have an influential role on subsequent energy balance behaviors and weight. OBJECTIVES The aim of this article is to consider the effect of proportionate changes in body composition during weight loss on subsequent changes in appetite and weight outcomes at 26 wk in individuals engaged in a weight loss maintenance intervention. METHODS A subgroup of the Diet, Obesity, and Genes (DiOGenes) study (n = 209) was recruited from 3 European countries. Participants underwent an 8-wk low-calorie diet (LCD) resulting in ≥8% body weight loss, during which changes in body composition (by DXA) and appetite (by visual analog scale appetite perceptions in response to a fixed test meal) were measured. Participants were randomly assigned into 5 weight loss maintenance diets based on protein and glycemic index content and followed up for 26 wk. We investigated associations between proportionate fat-free mass (FFM) loss (%FFML) during weight loss and 1) weight outcomes at 26 wk and 2) changes in appetite perceptions. RESULTS During the LCD, participants lost a mean ± SD of 11.2 ± 3.5 kg, of which 30.4% was FFM. After adjustment, there was a tendency for %FFML to predict weight regain in the whole group (β: 0.041; 95% CI: -0.001, 0.08; P = 0.055), which was significant in men (β: 0.09; 95% CI: 0.02, 0.15; P = 0.009) but not women (β: 0.01; 95% CI: -0.04, 0.07; P = 0.69). Associations between %FFML and change in appetite perceptions during weight loss were inconsistent. The strongest observations were in men for hunger (r = 0.69, P = 0.002) and desire to eat (r = 0.61, P = 0.009), with some tendencies in the whole group and no associations in women. CONCLUSIONS Our results suggest that composition of weight loss may have functional importance for energy balance regulation, with greater losses of FFM potentially being associated with increased weight regain and appetite. Abstract
PURPOSE Benign tracheal stenosis management is still controversial, and there is no international consensus on the best treatment option. Thus, we aimed to look into the history of PITS and the different strategies used in its treatment. The importance of bronchoscopic treatment was also defined, and its effectiveness and safety were assessed. METHODS Retrospective study of patients diagnosed with PITS, who were referred to the Bronchology Department between January 1996 and December 2016. RESULTS Of 115 patients enrolled (mean age 48.5±17.6 years, 53% males), 66.1% had complex stenosis. The most common causes of intubation were respiratory (29.9%), neurological (26.8%) and surgical (19.6%). Complex stenosis was caused by longer intubation, and was more frequent among previously tracheostomized patients. The most common location was the upper third of trachea (60.9%). Most cases were initially treated by interventional bronchoscopy, and although serial dilations were effective in some complex PITS, a higher proportion of simple stenosis was successfully managed with this treatment option. Long-term recurrence after serial dilation was observed in 25.0% of cases. Stent placement was required (19.1%) only for complex PITS. Stent-related complications were frequent (61.9%) and linked to the stenting time (p<0.001). Overall, there were no procedure-related complications. Surgical intervention was also performed (30.0%), always with complex PITS. Post-surgical recurrences were observed in 24.2% of cases. CONCLUSIONS Interventional bronchoscopy is an efficient and safe modality in PITS management. Further studies are needed for better classification and improved knowledge of PITS pathogenesis, and to achieve international consensus of definition to guide clinicians in their practice.

Abstract
Background and Purpose- Time to reperfusion is fundamental in reducing morbidity and mortality in acute stroke. We aimed to demonstrate that direct transfer to angio-suite (DTAS) of patients with suspected large vessel occlusion stroke improves workflow times and outcomes. Methods- A case-control matched study of the first 79 DTAS patients with confirmed large vessel occlusion (cases) and 145 no-DTAS patients (controls). DTAS protocol included a cone beam computed tomography in the angio-suite to rule out intracerebral hemorrhage for those patients with no prior neuroimaging in a referring center. Cases and controls were matched by location of vessel occlusion, age, baseline National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) score and time from symptoms onset to Comprehensive Stroke Center arrival. Dramatic clinical improvement was defined as a decrease in NIHSS score of >10 points or final NIHSS score of ≤2. Favorable outcome was defined as modified Rankin Scale score of ≤2 at 90 days. Results- During an 18 months period a total of 97 patients were directly transferred to the angio-suite after admission: 11 (11.6%) showed an intracerebral hemorrhage on cone beam computed tomography, 7 (7.2%) did not have a large vessel occlusion on initial angiogram, and 79 (76.3%) had a large vessel occlusion and received endovascular treatment (cases). There were no differences in age, baseline NIHSS score, level of occlusion and time from onset-to-door between cases and controls. The median door-to-groin time (16 [12-20] versus 70 [45-105] minutes; P<0.01) and onset-to-groin times (222 [152-282] versus 259 [190-345] minutes; P<0.01) were shorter in the DTAS group. At 24 hours, DTAS patients presented lower NIHSS score (7 [4-16] versus 14 [4-20]; P=0.01), higher rate of dramatic improvement (50.6% Vs. 31.7%; P=0.04), and higher rate of favorable clinical outcome at 90 days (41% versus 28%; P=0.05). A logistic regression model adjusting for all matching variables showed that DTAS protocol was independently associated with 3 months favorable outcome (odds ratio, 2.5; 95% CI, 1.2-5.3; P=0.01). Conclusions- DTAS is an effective strategy to reduce workflow time which may significantly increase the odds of achieving a favorable outcome.

Abstract
PURPOSE British Thoracic Society (BTS) guidelines advocate using FDG PET-CT with the Herder model to estimate malignancy risk in solitary pulmonary nodules (SPNs). Qualitative and semi-quantitative assessment of SPN uptake is based upon analysis of Ordered Subset Expected Maximisation (OSEM) PET images. Our aim was to assess the effect of a Bayesian Penalised Likelihood (BPL) PET reconstruction on the assessment of SPN FDG uptake and estimation of malignancy risk (Herder score). METHODS Subjects with SPNs who underwent FDG PET-CT between 2014-2017, with histological confirmation of malignancy or histological/imaging follow-up confirmation of benignity were included. Two blinded readers independently classified SPN uptake on both OSEM and BPL (BTS score; 1 = none; 2 = ≤ mediastinal blood pool (MBP); 3 = >MBP but ≤ 2x liver; 4 = >2x liver), with resultant calculation of the Herder score (%) for both reconstructions. RESULTS 97 subjects with 75 (77%) malignant SPNs were included. BPL increased the BTS score in 25 (26%) SPNs; 9 SPNs (7 malignant) increased from BTS score 2 to 3, 16 (13 malignant) from BTS score 3 to 4, with a mean Herder score increase of 18 ± 22%. The mean Herder score for all SPNs with BPL was higher than OSEM (73 ± 29 vs 68 ± 32%, p = 0.001). There was no difference in Herder model diagnostic performance between BPL and OSEM, with similar areas under the curve (0.84 vs 0.83, p = 0.39). CONCLUSION BPL increases the Herder score in 26% of SPNs compared to OSEM but does not alter the diagnostic performance of the Herder model.

Abstract
Trichomonas gallinae is a pathogen of conservation relevance, whose main maintenance hosts are Columbiformes, but spillover to avian predators has been described. The goal of this study was to characterize the epidemiology of Trichomonas spp. in a community of free-ranging domestic and wild Columbiformes and an endangered predator, Bonelli's eagle Aquila fasciata. We surveyed 253 live-captured Rock doves, 16 nestling Bonelli's eagles and 41 hunted Columbiformes. Oro-esophageal swabs were incubated in culture media and Trichomonas spp. isolated from Bonelli's eagle (6.3%, CI95 1.1-28.3), Turtle dove Streptopelia turtur (56.3%, CI95 39.3-71.8), Wood pigeon Columba palumbus (83.3%, CI95 43.7-97.0) and Rock dove Columba livia (68.4%, CI95 62.4-73.8). Infected Rock doves showed significantly poorer body condition than uninfected ones (p = 0.022). From a subset of 32 isolates, 18S and ITS1/5.8S/ITS2 rRNA genes were sequenced and Maximum-Likelihood trees inferred. Four ribotypes of Trichomonas spp. were identified. In this study area Trichomonas spp. seem to persist in a multi-host system involving several species of Columbiformes. Conservation actions aimed at increasing the availability of trophic resources for Bonelli's eagles through Rock dove restocking should consider the risk of pathogen transmission and of introduction of alien strains.

Abstract
Upper airways (UA) include the nasal cavities, pharynx, and larynx, and its main function is to warm and filter the inspired air. UA dysfunction is in the pathogenesis of various disorders, such as obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) and vocal cord dysfunction. In addition, in some neurodegenerative diseases (e.g. Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis - ALS), UA dysfunction may also compromise the effective use of ventilatory support (VS). In this context, the endoscopic evaluation of UA may be useful in understanding the OSAS mechanisms, in determining the causes for treatment-induced airway obstruction and even in helping to titrate noninvasive ventilation (NIV) in ALS patients with bulbar or pseudo-bulbar (spastic) dysfunction. Specifically, in OSAS patients, when residual obstructive events persist, although an optimal ventilatory mode has been apparently achieved, along with interface and equipment, the endoscopic evaluation of UA seems to be a valuable tool in understanding its mechanisms, even assisting adjustments to NIV parameters. In addition, it has also been described as being useful in laryngeal response to mechanical in-exsufflation (MI-E) and Exercise-Induced Laryngeal Obstruction (EILO). However, no protocol has yet been published or validated for this. For this reason, a literature review was conducted on UA function and its response to positive pressure and MI-E. Special emphasis has also been given to the current indication for video endoscopy in chronically ventilated patients.

Abstract
Despite numerous studies of epidemiological systems, the role of seasonality in the recurrent epidemics is not entirely understood. During certain periods of the year incidence rates of a number of endemic infectious diseases may fluctuate dramatically. This influences the dynamics of mathematical models describing the spread of infection and often leads to chaotic oscillations. In this paper, we are concerned with a generalization of a classical Susceptible-Infected-Recovered epidemic model which accounts for seasonal effects. Combining numerical and analytic techniques, we gain new insights into the complex dynamics of a recurrent disease influenced by the seasonality. Computation of the Lyapunov spectrum allows us to identify different chaotic regimes, determine the fractal dimension and estimate the predictability of the appearance of attractors in the system. Applying the homotopy analysis method, we obtain series solutions to the original nonautonomous SIR model with a high level of accuracy and use these approximations to analyze the dynamics of the system. The efficiency of the method is guaranteed by the optimal choice of an auxiliary control parameter which ensures the rapid convergence of the series to the exact solution of the forced SIR epidemic model.

Abstract
Mixtures containing ether sulfate based surfactants (SLEnS) and linear alkylbenzene sulfonic acid (LAS) are relatively common in personal care and household products. When in mixture, they form mixed micelles, which act as reservoirs for the cleaning process. The increase of ethylene oxide (EO) units in the head of SLEnS lowers the critical micelle concentration, meaning that less quantity of each surfactant is needed to form the micelles. Within an eco-friendly perspective this is advantageous since less chemicals are expected to be released into the environment. But, this advantage will only be effective if variations with the higher number of EO units exhibit a lower toxicity as well. Despite its wide use in commercial products, the ecotoxicity of these micelles and the influence of the EO units on their toxicity still did not receive the necessary attention. In this context, the present study aimed at assessing the influence of the number of ethylene oxide (EO) units in the head groups of SLEnS on the toxicity of the SLEnS-LAS mixed micelles to the bacterium Vibrio fischeri (Microtox® assay, here used as a fast and preliminary ecotoxicological indicator). The SLEnS variants with fewer EO units showed higher toxicity relatively to those with more EO units - EC50 range (0-50 EO units): 0.56-8.59 mg L-1, thus they can be suggested as environmentally safer variants to be used in personal care and household products. Provided the consistency of Microtox® results as obtained here, this quick and cost-effective procedure can be an important tool towards the development of eco-friendlier surfactant-based formulations.

Abstract
Background Determining the size of infarct extent is crucial to elect patients for reperfusion therapies. Computed tomography perfusion (CTP) based on cerebral blood volume may overestimate infarct core on admission and consequently include ghost infarct core (GIC) in a definitive lesional area. Purpose Our goal was to confirm and better characterize the GIC phenomenon using CTP cerebral blood flow (CBF) as the reference parameter to determine infarct core. Methods We performed a retrospective, single-center analysis of consecutive thrombectomies of middle cerebral or intracranial internal carotid artery occlusions considering noncontrast CT Alberta Stroke Program Early CT Score ≥6 in patients with pretreatment CTP. We used the RAPID® software to measure admission infarct core based on initial CBF. The final infarct was extracted from follow-up CT. GIC was defined as initial core minus final infarct > 10 mL. Results A total of 123 patients were included. The median National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale score was 18 (13-20), the median time from symptoms to CTP was 188 (67-288) min, and the recanalization rate (Thrombolysis in Cerebral Infarction score 2b, 2c, or 3) was 83%. Twenty patients (16%) presented with GIC. GIC was associated with shorter time to recanalization (150 [105-291] vs. 255 [163-367] min, p = 0.05) and larger initial CBF core volume (38 [26-59] vs. 6 [0-27] mL, p < 0.001). An adjusted logistic regression model identified time to recanalization < 302 min (OR 4.598, 95% CI 1.143-18.495, p = 0.032) and initial infarct volume (OR 1.01, 95% CI 1.001-1.019, p = 0.032) as independent predictors of GIC. At 24 h, clinical improvement was more frequent in patients with GIC (80 vs. 49%, p = 0.01). Conclusions CTP CBF < 30% may overestimate infarct core volume, especially in patients imaged in the very early time window and with fast complete reperfusion. Therefore, the CTP CBF technique may exclude patients who would benefit from endovascular treatment.

Abstract
Alberta Stroke Program Early CT score (ASPECTS) is widely used as cut-off point to indicate thrombolysis therapy in acute ischemic stroke. Its role in predicting patients likely to benefit from endovascular therapy has not been defined yet. ASPECTS presents a poor interrater reliability, and an automated software (eASPECTS) has been recently created to solve this limitation. Our aim was to evaluate correlation between ASPECTS measured by neurorradiologists, eASPECTS and cerebral blood volume (CBV) lesion, as well as to determine the impact of ASPECTS and eASPECTS on final infarct in thrombectomy patients.
Methods:
Consecutive patients with acute intracranial ICA and proximal MCA (M1) occlusion who underwent endovascular thrombectomy were included. ASPECTS and e-ASPECTS on basal non-contrast CT were evaluated. Admission infarct core was measured on CBV in CT perfusion. We assessed time from symptom onset to neuroimaging evaluation and recanalization (TICI 2b-3) after thrombectomy. Infarct volume was measured on 24-hour control CT.
Results:
We included 214 patients (88% with MCA occlusion). Median NIHSS was 18 (IQR 14-20) and mean time from symptom onset to CT was 194.11±154.34 min. Complete recanalization rate was 80.84%. Median ASPECTS was 9 (IQR 8-10) and median eASPECTS 9 (IQR 7.75-10), mean CBV infarct core was 55.29±90cc. Correlation (r

) between ASPECTS and eASPECTS was 0.44 (p<0.01). ASPECTS/eASPECTS and CBV presented a significant correlation only after 180 min of symptom onset (r

=-0.40 and -0.43) correlated with 24h infarct volume in patients with complete recanalization (p<0.01). A logistic regression analysis showed that both ASPECTS (OR 0.56, p<0.01, CI 0.43-0.72) and eASPECTS (OR 0.57, p<0.01, CI 0.44-0.73) predicted independently low final infarct volume, together with recanalization (OR 4.6, p=0.03, CI 1.69-2.34).
Conclusions:
Correlation of ASPECTS and eASPECTS with CBV was time-dependent as both measurements correlated with CBV when time to CT was>180 min. Both ASPECTS and eASPECTS predicted infarct volume after thrombectomy.

Abstract
Nonlinear systems are commonly able to display abrupt qualitative changes (or transitions) in the dynamics. A particular type of these transitions occurs when the size of a chaotic attractor suddenly changes. In this article, we present such a transition through the observation of a chaotic interior crisis in the Deng bursting-spiking model for the glucose-induced electrical activity of pancreatic β-cells. To this chaos-chaos transition corresponds precisely the change between the bursting and spiking dynamics, which are central and key dynamical regimes that the Deng model is able to perform. We provide a description of the crisis mechanism at the bursting-spiking transition point in terms of time series variations and based on certain amplitudes of invariant intervals associated with return maps. Using symbolic dynamics, we are able to accurately compute the points of a curve representing the transition between the bursting and spiking regimes in a biophysical meaningfully parameter space. The analysis of the chaotic interior crisis is complemented by means of topological invariants with the computation of the topological entropy and the maximum Lyapunov exponent. Considering very recent developments in the literature, we construct analytical solutions triggering the bursting-spiking transition in the Deng model. This study provides an illustration of how an integrated approach, involving numerical evidences and theoretical reasoning within the theory of dynamical systems, can directly enhance our understanding of biophysically motivated models.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Panurethral stricture associated with lichen sclerosus is a therapeutic challenge. We present the analysis of our results using two urethroplasty techniques based on oral mucosa graft. MATERIAL AND METHOD Retrospective study in patients with long anterior urethral stricture (>8cm) associated with lichen sclerosus. Patients received urethroplasty with oral mucosa graft technique according Kulkarni (n=25) or two-step Johanson-Bracka urethroplasty (n=15). Demographics, operative time, complications (Clavien-Dindo), hospital stay, days with catheter, EAV postoperative pain, failure rate, need for retreatment and functional data including IPSS, QoL, Qmax, post void residual (PVR) are evaluated. RESULTS In all cases there was involvement of glandular and penile urethra, and in 75% of bulbar urethra. A single graft was used in 22.5%, two in 72.5% and three in 5%. Patients treated at a single step were younger (P=.007). Although the length of the stenosis was equivalent in both techniques (P=.96), relapse and complication rates were higher in two-step surgery (P=.05 and P=.03; respectively) and so was operative time (P<.0001) and overall stay (P=.0002). There were no differences in preoperative IPSS, QoL, Qmax or PVR, neither in postoperative values of IPSS or Qmax; but there was a difference in QoL (P=.006) and PVR (P=.03) favouring single-step urethroplasty. VAS pain on postoperative day 1 was also lower in Kulkarni urethroplasty than in the first step of Johanson-Bracka technique (P<.0001). CONCLUSIONS In patients with lichen sclerosus and long anterior urethral stricture Kulkarni urethroplasty provides more efficient and better patient reported outcomes than Johanson-Bracka urethroplasty. It also prevents cosmetic, sexual and voiding temporary deterioration inherent to 2-step surgery.

Abstract
Giant Cell Arteritis (GCA) is a large vessels vasculitis that is typically characterised by headache, scalp tenderness, jaw claudication and visual disturbances. Temporal arteries color Doppler ultrasonography (CDUS) is a sensitive and non-invasive image technique used in the diagnosis of this disease. This work highlights the importance of CDUS in the diagnostic workup of GCA and also demonstrates it´s usefullness in the evaluation and documentation of the response to corticosteroids therapy in an atypical case of ACG.

Abstract
Coevolution between two antagonistic species has been widely studied theoretically for both ecologically- and genetically-driven Red Queen dynamics. A typical outcome of these systems is an oscillatory behavior causing an endless series of one species adaptation and others counter-adaptation. More recently, a mathematical model combining a three-species food chain system with an adaptive dynamics approach revealed genetically driven chaotic Red Queen coevolution. In the present article, we analyze this mathematical model mainly focusing on the impact of species rates of evolution (mutation rates) in the dynamics. Firstly, we analytically proof the boundedness of the trajectories of the chaotic attractor. The complexity of the coupling between the dynamical variables is quantified using observability indices. By using symbolic dynamics theory, we quantify the complexity of genetically driven Red Queen chaos computing the topological entropy of existing one-dimensional iterated maps using Markov partitions. Co-dimensional two bifurcation diagrams are also built from the period ordering of the orbits of the maps. Then, we study the predictability of the Red Queen chaos, found in narrow regions of mutation rates. To extend the previous analyses, we also computed the likeliness of finding chaos in a given region of the parameter space varying other model parameters simultaneously. Such analyses allowed us to compute a mean predictability measure for the system in the explored region of the parameter space. We found that genetically driven Red Queen chaos, although being restricted to small regions of the analyzed parameter space, might be highly unpredictable.

Abstract
Aiming to implement an analytical methodology that is highly selective for the extraction and quantification of terbuthylazine from olive oil, we successfully achieved: (i) the development of a molecularly imprinted polymer by bulk polymerization using terbuthylazine as template molecule, methacrylic acid as functional monomer, ethylene glycol dimethacrylate as cross-linker, and dichloromethane as porogen; (ii) characterization of the imprinting material using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, nitrogen adsorption at 77 K, and scanning electron microscopy; (iii) their molecular recognition for the template molecule using high-performance liquid chromatography, and (iv) optimization of a solid-phase extraction procedure using as sorbent the synthesized molecularly imprinted polymer for the selective extraction and clean-up of terbuthylazine from spiked organic olive oil and further quantification of the pesticide levels by high-performance liquid chromatography. The suitability of the implemented analytical methodology was demonstrated, as concentrations of terbuthylazine below the tolerated maximum residue limits in the spiked organic olive oil samples could be satisfactorily analyzed with good precision/accuracy with high recovery rates (96%). Overall, the implemented methodology has proven to be reliable and robust and is highly promising in the field of sample preparation, particularly for the isolation/preconcentration of terbuthylazine in complex food samples.

Abstract
The study aim was to describe the emergence of carbapenem resistance and clonal complexes (CC), defined by multilocus sequence typing (MLST), in Acinetobacter baumannii in a surveillance system for meningitis. Starting in 1996 in an urban setting of Brazil, surveillance detected meningitis by Acinetobacter sp for the first time in 2002. Up to 2008, 35 isolates were saved. Carbapenem resistance emerged in 2006, reaching 70% of A. baumannii isolates in 2008, including one that was colistin resistant. A. baumannii belonged to CC113/79 (University of Oxford/Institute Pasteur schemes), CC235/162 and CC103/15. Dissemination of infections resistant to all antimicrobial agents may occur in the future.
