Abstract
AIMS We present a case series of five patients who had revision surgery following magnetic controlled growing rods (MGCR) for early onset scoliosis. Metallosis was found during revision in four out of five patients and we postulated a mechanism for rod failure based on retrieval analysis. PATIENTS AND METHODS Retrieval analysis was performed on the seven explanted rods. The mean duration of MCGR from implantation to revision was 35 months (17 to 46). The mean age at revision was 12 years (7 to 15; four boys, one girl). RESULTS A total of six out of seven rods had tissue metallosis and pseudo-capsule surrounding the actuator. A total of four out of seven rods were pistoning. There were two rods which were broken. All rods had abrasive circumferential markings. A significant amount of metal debris was found when the actuators were carefully cut open. Analytical electron microscopy demonstrated metal fragments of predominantly titanium with a mean particle size of 3.36 microns (1.31 to 6.61). CONCLUSION This study highlights concerns with tissue metallosis in MCGR. We recommend careful follow-up of patients who have received this implant. Cite this article: Bone Joint J 2016;98-B:1662-7.

Abstract
The predicted expansion of global livestock populations to meet the food and fibre demands of the growing human population raises numerous concerns, including the implications for disease emergence. The evolution of animal production in developed countries has been marked by substantial reduction in farm numbers with correspondingly larger herd sizes, specialization of enterprises, concentration or ownership and vertical integration. Innovations in the structure and operations of swine production have been largely driven by efforts to improve swine health, and the impact of several important swine diseases has declined. Productivity in swine production and the safety of pork products have increased markedly. The most significant emerging infectious diseases of pigs over the last decades have been highly host-specific viruses rather than multihost pathogens. While some bacterial pathogens of pigs have increased in importance in modern systems, improved management systems and biosecurity have enabled herd sizes to increase without negative impact on swine health. The most vulnerable scenario for disease emergence in swine, particularly for zoonotic agents, may be rapid expansion and intensification of swine industries in developing countries without incorporating the stringent biosecurity measures and veterinary oversight that have helped maintain the health and productivity of large herds in North America. Factors that may influence disease emergence in the long term include regulatory measures (particularly related to antimicrobial use), genetics and feeding practices.

Abstract
We report the behavior of Au nanoparticles anchored onto a Si(111) substrate and the evolution of the combined structure with annealing and oxidation. Au nanoparticles, formed by annealing a Au film, appear to "float" upon a growing layer of SiO2 during oxidation at high temperature, yet they also tend to become partially encapsulated by the growing silica layers. It is proposed that this occurs largely because of the differential growth rates of the silica layer on the silicon substrate between the particles and below the particles due to limited access of oxygen to the latter. This in turn is due to a combination of blockage of oxygen adsorption by the Au and limited oxygen diffusion under the gold. We think that such behavior is likely to be seen for other metal-semiconductor systems.

Abstract
Influenza A viruses are common causes of respiratory disease in pigs and can be transmitted among multiple host species, including humans. The current lack of published information on infection dynamics of influenza viruses within swine herds hinders the ability to make informed animal health, biosecurity and surveillance programme decisions. The objectives of this serial cross-sectional study were to describe the infection dynamics of influenza virus in a two-site swine system by estimating the prevalence of influenza virus in animal subpopulations at the swine breeding herd and describing the temporal pattern of infection in a selected cohort of growing pigs weaned from the breeding herd. Nasal swab and blood samples were collected at approximately 30-day intervals from the swine breeding herd (Site 1) known to be infected with pandemic 2009 H1N1 influenza virus. Sows, gilts and neonatal pigs were sampled at each sampling event, and samples were tested for influenza virus genome using matrix gene RRT-PCR. Influenza virus was detected in neonatal pigs, but was not detected in sow or gilt populations via RRT-PCR. A virus genetically similar to that detected in the neonatal pig population at Site 1 was also detected at the wean-to-finish site (Site 2), presumably following transportation of infected weaned pigs. Longitudinal sampling of nasal swabs and oral fluids revealed that influenza virus persisted in the growing pigs at Site 2 for at least 69 days. The occurrence of influenza virus in neonatal pigs, but not breeding females, at Site 1 emphasizes the potential for virus maintenance in this dynamic subpopulation, the importance of including this subpopulation in surveillance programmes and the potential transport of influenza virus between sites via the movement of weaned pigs.

Abstract
We have examined the outcome in 19 professional rugby union players who underwent anterior cervical discectomy and fusion between 1998 and 2003. Through a retrospective review of the medical records and telephone interviews of all 19 players, we have attempted to determine the likelihood of improvement, return to professional sport and the long-term consequences. We have also attempted to relate the probability of symptoms in the neck and radicular pain in the arm to the position of play. Neck and radicular pain were improved in 17 patients, with 13 returning to rugby, the majority by six months after operation. Of these, 13 returned to their pre-operative standard of play, one to a lower level and five have not played rugby again. Two of those who returned to the game have subsequently suffered further symptoms in the neck, one of whom was obliged to retire. The majority of the players with problems in the neck were front row forwards. A return to playing rugby union after surgery and fusion of the anterior cervical spine is both likely and safe and need not end a career in the game.

Abstract
A longitudinal capture–mark–recapture study was conducted to determine the temporal dynamics of rabbit haemorrhagic disease (RHD) in a European rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus) population of low to moderate density on sand-hill country in the lower North Island of New Zealand. A combination of sampling (trapping and radio-tracking) and diagnostic (cELISA, PCR and isotype ELISA) methods was employed to obtain data weekly from May 1998 until June 2001. Although rabbit haemorrhagic disease virus (RHDV) infection was detected in the study population in all 3 years, disease epidemics were evident only in the late summer or autumn months in 1999 and 2001. Overall, 20% of 385 samples obtained from adult animals older than 11 weeks were seropositive. An RHD outbreak in 1999 contributed to an estimated population decline of 26%. A second RHD epidemic in February 2001 was associated with a population decline of 52% over the subsequent month. Following the outbreaks, the seroprevalence in adult survivors was between 40% and 50%. During 2000, no deaths from RHDV were confirmed and mortalities were predominantly attributed to predation. Influx of seronegative immigrants was greatest in the 1999 and 2001 breeding seasons, and preceded the RHD epidemics in those years. Our data suggest that RHD epidemics require the population immunity level to fall below a threshold where propagation of infection can be maintained through the population.

Abstract
As part of a longitudinal study of the epidemiology of rabbit haemorrhagic disease virus (RHDV) in New Zealand, serum samples were obtained from trapped feral animals that may have consumed European rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus) carcasses (non-target species). During a 21-month period when RHDV infection was monitored in a defined wild rabbit population, 16 feral house cats (Felis catus), 11 stoats (Mustela erminea), four ferrets (Mustela furo) and 126 hedgehogs (Erinaceus europaeus) were incidentally captured in the rabbit traps. The proportions of samples that were seropositive to RHDV were 38% for cats, 18% for stoats, 25% for ferrets and 4% for hedgehogs. Seropositive non-target species were trapped in April 2000, in the absence of an overt epidemic of rabbit haemorrhagic disease (RHD) in the rabbit population, but evidence of recent infection in rabbits was shown. Seropositive non-target species were found up to 2.5 months before and 1 month after this RHDV activity in wild rabbits was detected. Seropositive predators were also trapped on the site between 1 and 4.5 months after a dramatic RHD epidemic in February 2001. This study has shown that high antibody titres can be found in non-target species when there is no overt evidence of RHDV infection in the rabbit population, although a temporal relationship could not be assessed statistically owning to the small sample sizes. Predators and scavengers might be able to contribute to localised spread of RHDV through their movements.

Abstract
This study investigated whether exposure to inactivated rabbit haemorrhagic disease virus (RHDV) can produce an antigenic response in rabbits and protect them from a subsequent challenge with virulent virus. The aim was to determine if the spreading of baits containing RHDV, which is a common management practice in New Zealand to reduce rabbit numbers, could result in protective immunity in wild rabbits. RHDV was inactivated by ultraviolet (UV) light using an electronic UV crosslinker with a UV dose of 168.48 W-s/cm2 and a UV intensity of 0.0078 W/cm2. Two groups of four rabbits were then inoculated with inactivated virus via oral and intramuscular routes. Rabbits were monitored for 30 days post-inoculation and then challenged orally with virulent virus. No rabbit exposed to inactivated RHDV developed clinical signs of RHD or had antibodies at day 30 post-infection and all animals died within 82 h after challenge with virulent virus. No antibodies were detected at the time of death. These findings suggest that exposure to virus completely inactivated by UV light in the field or on baits will not protect rabbits against challenge with virulent virus.

Abstract
A study was conducted to investigate the persistence of rabbit haemorrhagic disease virus (RHDV) in the environment. Virus was impregnated onto two carrier materials (cotton tape and bovine liver) and exposed to environmental conditions on pasture during autumn in New Zealand. Samples were collected after 1, 10, 44 and 91 days and the viability of the virus was determined by oral inoculation of susceptible 11- to 14-week-old New Zealand White rabbits. Evidence of RHDV infection was based on clinical and pathological signs and/or seroconversion to RHDV. Virus impregnated on cotton tape was viable at 10 days of exposure but not at 44 days, while in bovine liver it was still viable at 91 days. The results of this study suggest that RHDV in animal tissues such as rabbit carcasses can survive for at least 3 months in the field, while virus exposed directly to environmental conditions, such as dried excreted virus, is viable for a period of less than 1 month. Survival of RHDV in the tissues of dead animals could, therefore, provide a persistent reservoir of virus, which could initiate new outbreaks of disease after extended delays.

Abstract
AIMS To report information on the spread of a new strain of Salmonella Brandenburg, which affected livestock and humans in the South Island of New Zealand, and a series of small case studies designed to investigate potential transmission of infection. METHODS Information on the occurrence and spread of S. Brandenburg in livestock was gathered from laboratory diagnostic submissions, from case studies on the faecal excretion rate in ewes, carrier status of black-backed gulls (Larus dominicanus), spread of S. Brandenburg organisms in sheep yards, infection in lambs going to meat plants, and from post-abortion pathological changes in the reproductive tract of ewes. RESULTS A newly recognised strain of S. Brandenburg was first diagnosed in aborting sheep from a flock in mid Canterbury in the South Island in 1996. Subsequently, the disease spread to other farms in mid and south Canterbury in 1997 and to Southland and Otago in the lower half of the South Island in 1998-2003. In 1999, the same strain was responsible for abortions in cattle and gastroenteritis in calves and adult cattle. The same strain of bacterium also caused disease in horses, goats, deer, pigs and humans. Spread of the disease on farms was strongly associated with aborting ewes, which resulted in considerable environmental contamination. During the abortion season, black-backed gulls appeared to spread the disease to other farms. Other potential sources of infection were carrier sheep, contaminated water sources and contaminated sheepyard dust. Damage to the reproductive tract may affect the ability of surviving ewes to conceive. CONCLUSION Important features of this disease are its high morbidity and mortality within a flock or herd, rapid local spread and its role as an occupational, health and safety risk to farm workers and their families.

Abstract
The specificity and sensitivity of an ELISA for detecting IgG to the 3ABC non-structural protein of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) virus was evaluated in FMD naive, aerosol-infected, aerosol plus direct contact infected and field-exposed sheep. All 12 sheep that were experimentally infected without prior vaccination seroconverted in the test, although fewer field sera from FMD-exposed sheep were scored seropositive compared to test results for structural protein antibodies. The 3ABC test specificity was 98 or 100% according to whether sera reacting in the doubtful range were scored as positive or negative. The test was then used to investigate the antibody response of sheep vaccinated against FMD and exposed to the virus by an aerosol challenge 4-14 days later. The response of individual animals varied. Whether immunised with high or low doses of vaccine, the development of 3ABC antibody was most likely in sheep from which live virus was recovered at or beyond 9 days post-challenge. Non-structural responses were also more frequent in animals from which multiple incidences of live FMD virus isolation (perhaps more indicative of true virus replication) were demonstrated.

Abstract
Oxygen chemisorption at metal surfaces has been shown through a combination of scanning tunnelling microscopy and photoelectron spectroscopy to involve transient states that provide low energy pathways for a wide range of surface reactions including the catalytic oxidation of ammonia and hydrocarbons. The kinetically 'hot' transients are disordered and mobile, become unreactive when they form ordered structures, and are characterized by non-classical kinetic behaviour. The role of surface additives (caesium) in controlling oxygen structures and the implications of oxygen transients for theory and reaction mechanisms in applied catalysis are considered.

Abstract
In the USA, control of food-borne salmonellosis associated with meat consumption has been predominantly focused at slaughter and processing. It is expected that standards at slaughter and processing will become more stringent, creating pressure to reduce prevalence of Salmonella-positive food animals through on-farm interventions. The aim of this study was to compare traditional fecal culture and the Danish Mix-ELISA (DME) for determination of Salmonella prevalence pre-harvest in swine. In Trial 1, five cohorts of individually identified pigs were longitudinally sampled during the growing period to compare the kinetics of prevalence as estimated by fecal culture and the DME. In Trial 2, the correlation between fecal prevalence and seroprevalence was estimated pre-marketing in 49 groups of pigs. In Trial 1, fecal prevalence and seroprevalence showed similar kinetics, with a tendency of a higher OD% cut-off to more closely approximate fecal prevalence. In Trial 2, correlations between fecal culture and the DME were 0.40, 0.36, 0.43, and 0.43 (p<0.001) for OD% cut-offs > or =10, 20, 30, and 40, respectively. Based on these results, a higher OD% cut-off would be recommended if more approximate estimation of fecal prevalence is desired and longitudinal sampling would be suggested for evaluating the impact of on-farm interventions for Salmonella reduction whether utilizing fecal culture or the DME. Further evaluation of the impact of Salmonella serovar present on farms on seroprevalence and the relationship of on-farm seroprevalence with food safety risk are needed prior to utilizing the DME for pre-harvest Salmonella diagnostics in the US swine herd.

Abstract
AIM To describe temporal and spatial patterns of the prevalence of pneumonia in lambs in three regions of New Zealand, and determine effects on liveweight gain. METHODS A longitudinal study was conducted in 1999- 2000 on 14 commercial sheep farms, five from the Southland region of the South Island, and five from the King Country and four from the Northland regions of the North Island. Pneumonia was known to be a problem in lambs on all farms selected. On each farm, 400 lambs were randomly selected at weaning and allocated at random to one of two groups (Groups I and II). Lambs in both groups were weighed at 4-weekly intervals. The extent of pneumonic lesions in lungs was scored visually at slaughter in 40 randomly selected lambs after each weighing (Group I). Lambs in Group II were selected for slaughter by the farm manager on a commercial basis of liveweight and body condition, then assessed for pneumonic lesions. RESULTS Prevalence of extensive pneumonic lesions (>/=10% lung surface area affected) increased from December to March from 1.4 to 10.1% lambs in Southland (n=1,917), 1.2 to 25.7% in the King Country (n=1,831), and 4.7 to 21.4% in Northland (n=1,485). Overall, 42.3% of lambs in both groups had pneumonic lesions (n=5,233) and in 15.1% of these, >/=5% of the lung surface area was affected. Daily weight gain in the month prior to slaughter was reduced in lambs for which >/=20% lung surface area was affected in Group I (p<0.05) but not in Group II. CONCLUSIONS The association between pneumonic lesions and reduced weight gain was highly significant in lambs from Group I, but not from Group II. Thus, pneumonia had a negative impact on weight gain, and selection by farmers of lambs for slaughter counteracted this association in lambs from Group II. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Pneumonia occurs commonly as a subclinical disease in lambs in New Zealand. It has no public health significance and is not recorded at slaughter plants nor reported to farmer clients. Effects of the disease on daily weight gain of lambs is considerable and costly for lamb producers.

Abstract
Four years after the release of Rabbit haemorrhagic disease virus (RHDV) in New Zealand, we conducted a mail survey of farmers to ascertain their attitudes and practices about rabbit control. A multistage sampling frame (stratified by rabbit-proneness and farm type) was used to select 828 farms in eight geographical regions. The useable response proportion of the survey was 69.3%, and 21% of respondents considered rabbits to be a problem on their farms. Although practices for rabbit control had changed from 1995 to 2001, shooting (practised by 85% of respondents) remained the predominant method used (albeit less frequently than in 1995). Ten percent of farmers used RHDV baiting; of those, 90% released the virus relatively infrequently. Farmers perceived shooting to be the most-humane and environmentally safe method, while RHDV was perceived to be the most effective. Perception of the level of competition for grazing between rabbits and livestock was the factor most-strongly associated with the use of shooting and RHDV. Most (60%) respondents considered the introduction of RHDV to have been beneficial.

Abstract
AIM To investigate the role of free-living animals such as sparrows, rodents and flies as potential reservoirs of Campylobacter spp on a dairy farm, and to assess the genetic diversity among Campylobacter isolates from the farm and an urban source. METHODS A total of 290 samples (bovine, passerine and rodent faeces, and whole flies) were collected from a large commercial dairy farm in the Manawatu district in New Zealand, and from faeces from urban sparrows in a nearby city. Other samples collected from the dairy farm included five from silage, two from aprons worn by workers during milking, two from workers' boots and two from water in troughs in a paddock. Isolates of thermophilic Campylobacter spp were identified morphologically and phenotypically and further characterised molecularly using pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) and the restriction enzyme SmaI. RESULTS Campylobacter jejuni was the only Campylobacter species isolated from all samples. The highest prevalence was found in faeces from dairy cows (54%), followed by faeces from sparrows from the urban area (40%) and the farm (38%), and from rodents (11%) and whole flies (9%). Other samples from the farm environment such as silage, trough water, and workers' aprons and boots were also positive for C. jejuni. Of the 22 restriction patterns obtained, seven were common to more than one source. CONCLUSIONS Cattle, sparrows, rodents and flies are potential reservoirs of C. jejuni on dairy farms. Identical clones of C. jejuni carried by cattle, sparrows, flies and rodents probably indicate a common source of infection. The high level of asymptomatic carriage of C. jejuni by healthy dairy cows could be sufficient to maintain infections within the dairy farm surroundings via environmental contamination.

Abstract
Free available chlorine (FAC) concentrations in drinking water supplied to broiler chickens grown commercially in New Zealand were monitored for 11 farms in two companies. Different sites within a growout house were examined at different times of the day to determine spatial and temporal differences in FAC concentrations. Taps provided water with significantly higher FAC concentrations than did drinkers. There were no significant differences between the concentrations of FAC taken from various drinkers around the growout house. There were differences in the variations of measurements taken from the same drinker within a growout house at different times of the day, with variations increasing in the afternoon. No growout houses provided an average FAC content of 2 ppm, the suggested standard in one company. Three growout houses consistently met the chlorine concentration of 0.2 ppm suggested by the New Zealand Drinking Water Standards.

Abstract
Intensive longitudinal investigations of breeding and growing pig populations in two multiple-site swine production systems were conducted in NC, USA. Five cohorts of sows and individually identified growing pigs from their litters were serially sampled in order to determine the prevalence and serotypes of Salmonella enterica in each stage of production based on fecal culture. In addition to fecal samples, feed and environmental samples were obtained. Fifteen different serotypes were isolated from the two systems, the most frequently isolated serotypes were S. typhimurium var Mbandaka and S. typhimurium var Copenhagen. Pig prevalence estimates ranged from 0 to 48.1%. Environmental contamination was frequently encountered despite cleaning and disinfection. Feed was rarely (2/800, 0.25%) identified as S. enterica positive. We observed highly variable patterns of S. enterica prevalence and serotype profiles within cohorts over time and among cohorts within systems. These observations indicate that point estimates of S. enterica prevalence and serotypes cannot be considered as reliable indicators of the S. enterica status of farms, and that uncontrolled studies of interventions to control S. enterica may yield misleading results. These findings are critical to the design of epidemiological studies of S. enterica on swine farms and may suggest that cohort level, as opposed to farm or company level events or management practices, may be important as potential risk factors for S. enterica fecal shedding in market age pigs.

Abstract
The goal of this study was to identify risk factors associated with increased fecal shedding of Salmonella enterica (SE) in groups of market swine reared in large three-site production units. We conducted an intensive, long-term investigation of potential management and environmental risk factors operating during the growing phase of pig production. Data regarding finisher site characteristics, biosecurity protocols, group growth performance, medication usage, and environmental temperature were collected. Results indicate that SE infection is common. Risk factors were identified at both the finisher site and group level. Biosecurity and hygiene practices (absence of a toilet, more than 2 people present at a finisher site daily, and other domestic species at the site), environmental temperature (winter and spring seasons, increased temperature variability, and below median high temperature the day of sampling), and production performance (above median feed conversion) were associated with elevated SE prevalence. In addition, an association between the floor space allowances per pig at the time of sampling (a measure of the number of pigs sold prior to sampling) was identified, with greater space allowance associated with decreased prevalence. The results of this study identify potential management practices for evaluation for SE control and suggest caution in interpretation of fecal culture results when sampling from different marketing groups in swine production systems.

Abstract
In 1997, an epizootic in Taiwan, Province of China, was caused by a type O foot-and-mouth disease virus which infected pigs but not cattle. The virus had an altered 3A protein, which harbored a 10-amino-acid deletion and a series of substitutions. Here we show that this deletion is present in the earliest type O virus examined from the region (from 1970), whereas substitutions surrounding the deletion accumulated over the last 29 years. Analyses of the growth of these viruses in bovine cells suggest that changes in the genome in addition to the deletion, per se, are responsible for the porcinophilic properties of current Asian viruses in this lineage.

Abstract
We examined the antimicrobial resistance of 1,257 isolates of 30 serovars of Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica isolated from swine. Serovars Typhimurium and Typhimurium var. Copenhagen were widespread and were frequently multidrug resistant, with distinct resistance to ampicillin, kanamycin, streptomycin, sulfamethoxazole, and tetracycline and to ampicillin, chloramphenicol, streptomycin, sulfamethoxazole, and tetracycline, respectively.

Abstract
The effect of different fecal sample weights on the detection of Salmonella enterica in swine feces was examined. Sample weights evaluated were rectal swabs and fecal samples weighing 1 g, 10 g, and 25 g. Comparisons were made on matched fecal samples obtained from individual pigs housed on 2 commercial swine farms in North Carolina. Relative sensitivity (number of positive pigs per fecal weight category/number positive in all weight categories) increased (P < 0.001) with fecal sample weight, and ranged from 9% for rectal swabs to 78% for 25-g samples. Stomaching of fecal samples did not affect detection of S. enterica. These observations demonstrate that fecal sample weight can markedly influence estimates of prevalence of S. enterica in epidemiologic studies. Failure to consider the imperfect sensitivity of bacterial culture in the design and interpretation of epidemiologic studies will lead to underestimation of prevalence and reduced power to detect the presence of S. enterica-infected herds.

Abstract
A series of experiments was conducted using faecal samples collected from commercial swine farms to evaluate the effects of variation in methods used for the detection of Salmonella bacteria. The primary objective of the studies was to compare the protocols routinely used in two laboratories in the USA. The studies included five experiments comparing the enrichment protocols used routinely in the respective laboratories (Method 1: 10 g faeces--buffered peptone water (BPW) pre-enrichment--selective enrichment in Rappaport/Vassiliadis (RV) broth; Method 2: approximately 1g faeces--primary enrichments in tetrathionate and Hajna GN broths--secondary enrichment in RV broth). The effects of enrichment temperatures (37 vs 42 degrees C) using RV broth (two experiments) and delayed secondary enrichment (four experiments) were also evaluated. Direct comparison of Method 1 and Method 2 indicated comparable results. However, when compared using faecal samples of equal weight, the Method 2 enrichment protocol was more sensitive for detecting Salmonella bacteria than the Method 1 protocol. Enrichment in RV at 42 degrees C was superior to 37 degrees C, particularly for samples that were pre-enriched in BPW. Delayed secondary enrichment increased detection of Salmonella bacteria in swine faeces. These results highlight the imperfect sensitivity of culture methods, and the need for researchers to consider the sensitivity of bacteriological methods in the design and interpretation of the results of epidemiologic studies based on faecal culture.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine effects of fecal sample storage and delayed secondary enrichment (DSE) on detection of Salmonella spp in swine feces. Sample Population-Fecal samples obtained from 84 pigs in a commercial herd. PROCEDURE Each fecal sample underwent 3 storage treatments: no storage (ie, processed on the day of collection), storage at 4 C for 6 days, and storage at -15 C for 14 days. After assigned storage treatments, all samples were enriched in Rappaport-Vassiladias (RV) broth (single enrichment) and plated on XLT4 agar. Delayed secondary enrichment was performed, using single enrichment broths that were stored for 4 days at room temperature. RESULTS Of 504 cultures, 186 (36.9%) were Salmonella positive. A difference in proportions of samples with positive results was not found between same-day processing and storage at 4 C for 6 days. Compared with use of single enrichment for 24 hours (34% positive), use of DSE resulted in a greater proportion (40%; P < 0.001) of samples with positive results. Estimated relative sensitivities for the storage methods were 0.90, 0.85, and 0.71 for same-day processing, storage at 4 C for 6 days, and storage at -15 C for 14 days, respectively. CONCLUSIONS Where practical, processing of fecal samples on the day of collection is recommended, although storage at 4 C for several days does not result in marked loss of sensitivity. Improved detection associated with DSE warrants further investigation and optimization.

Abstract
We compared the seroprevalence of both Toxoplasma gondii and Trichinella spiralis in finishing pigs raised in different production systems in North Carolina, USA. Farms were either finishing sites using all-in/all-out management of buildings in multiple-site systems (14 farms) or farrow-to-finish systems using continuous-flow management of finishing barns or outdoor accommodation 14 farms). The two groups of herds differed with respect to several management variables. A total of 13 of 2238 samples (0.58%) were positive for antibodies to Toxoplasma gondii using the modified agglutination test. Of these, 12 were from 63 pigs sampled on a farm where finishing pigs were kept on pasture. Only one of 1752 (0.057%) samples from pigs kept in total confinement systems was seropositive. Only one pig of 2183 (0.046%) tested positive by ELISA for antibodies against T. spiralis. In this region, management practices in modern production systems appear to be adequate to virtually eliminate the risk of infection of finishing pigs with both T. gondii and T. spiralis.

Abstract
Cattle which have been infected with foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) virus can be differentiated from those that have been vaccinated on the basis of the detection of antibody to one or more of the non-structural (NS) proteins of the virus. Cattle which have been protected by vaccination can become persistently infected with FMD virus (FMDV) without ever showing clinical signs. Vaccinated, protected cattle which are persistently infected cannot be distinguished from animals that merely have been vaccinated on the basis of serological tests for antibody to the structural proteins of FMDV. Sera were collected from groups of cattle for varying periods after exposure to infection under experimental conditions. On the basis of isolation of virus from probang samples collected during the course of the experiments it was possible to classify the cattle according to the following criteria; naive, infected and eliminated the virus (convalescent), infected and persistently infected with FMDV (carriers), vaccinated alone, vaccinated and either convalescent or carrier. Sera were examined for antibody to the NS proteins Lb, 2C, 3A, 3D, and 3ABC by an indirect profiling ELISA using E. coli-expressed fusion proteins as antigens. Considerable variation was observed in the antibody response to NS proteins of both naive and vaccinated animals following infection. The extent of individual variation was so great that convalescent animals could not be differentiated from carrier animals on the basis of their antibody response to any of the NS proteins examined. The majority of vaccinated, protected animals showed an antibody response to NS proteins, particularly 3ABC, following exposure to infection. However, the carrier state was demonstrated in some vaccinated, protected animals in which no antibody response to any of the NS proteins could be detected. The detection of antibody to NS proteins can therefore be used on a group, or herd, basis to detect circulation of virus in a vaccinated population but further investigations in the field are required to determine the sampling level necessary for statistical acceptance. On an individual animal basis, however, freedom from antibody to NS proteins in a vaccinated animal, or an animal of unknown history, does not necessarily imply that the animal is free from infection with FMD virus and, furthermore, the titre of antibody to NS proteins is not a useful predictive measure of whether or not an infected animal has successfully eliminated the virus.

OBJECTIVE To determine the prevalence and serotypes of Salmonella organisms in feces of pigs raised in a modern, multiple-site production system. DESIGN Cross-sectional study of prevalence. SAMPLE POPULATION Swine housed on 7 farms (1 gilt development farm, 2 breeding farms, 1 nursery farm, and 3 finishing farms) that formed a multiplesite production system. PROCEDURE Fecal samples were obtained from 792 pigs (96 to 202/farm) and submitted for bacteriolgic culture of Salmonella organisms. RESULTS Salmonellae were isolated from pigs on all 7 farms and from 95 of 792 (12%) fecal samples. Prevalence ranged from 3.4% at the gilt development farm to 18 and 22% at the breeding farms. Serotypes identified were Salmonella derby, S typhimurium var. copenhagen, S heidelberg, S typhimurium, S mbandaka, S worthington, and S tennessee. No single serotype was not isolated from all the farms of the production system and the most prevalent serotypes at the 3 finishing farms (S typhimurium or S typhimurium var. copenhagen) were not isolated from the breeding or nursery farms. CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS Upstream infection (pigs infected before arriving at finishing farms) appears to be an unimportant source of Salmonella infection of finished hogs in multiple-site systems. High prevalence of Salmonella shedding in breeding animals suggests that food products derived from culled breeding livestock may be an important source of foodborne disease.

Abstract
A profiling ELISA was developed to detect antibody to the non-structural (NS) proteins Lb, 2C, 3A, 3D, and the polyprotein 3ABC, of foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV). The assay was used to examine panels of sera from naive cattle, and from experimentally infected or vaccinated animals. All sera from cattle experimentally infected with any of the seven serotypes of FMDV were positive for antibody to 2C, 3A, 3D and 3ABC, and the majority were positive for Lb. The three categories of sera could be differentiated on the basis of the presence or absence of antibody to the structural and/or NS proteins of FMDV. The assay is simple, rapid and reproducible and can be used to identify previous infection in animals which are seropositive for antibody to the structural proteins of the virus. Validating the assay with field sera demonstrated that antibody to 3ABC, and usually one or more of the other non-structural proteins, was detected only in animals reported to have shown clinical signs of FMD. Vaccinated cattle which had received less than five vaccinations, were frequently positive for antibody to 3D but were negative for antibody to 3ABC. Occasional animals which had received more than ten vaccinations had NS protein antibody profiles which were similar to those seen following infection.

We compared the prevalence of salmonella in faecal samples from finishing pigs and in feed samples from swine herds in North Carolina, USA. Farms were either finishing sites using all-in/all-out management of buildings in multiple-site systems (14 farms) or farrow-to-finish systems using continuous flow management of finishing barns (15 farms). The two groups of herds differed with respect to several management variables. Salmonella were isolated from 565 of 2288 (24.6%) faecal samples and from at least 1 faecal sample on 24 of 29 (83%) farms. Predominant serotypes were S. derby, S. typhimurium (including copenhagen), S. heidelberg, S. worthington and S. mbandaka. Fewer farrow-to-finish farms were detected as positive compared with all-in/all-out farms. Prevalence was lower for pigs raised on slotted floors compared with all other floor types, and was highest for pigs raised on dirt lots. Modern methods of raising pigs in multiple-site production systems, using all-in/all-out management of finishing pigs, appear to have no benefit in reducing the prevalence of salmonella compared with conventional farrow-to-finish systems.

Abstract
Sarcoptic mange is one of the common swine diseases worldwide. Although mange-free populations can be established with caesarean derived stock, by herd repopulation programmes or by eliminating mange with ivermectin, mange remains prevalent in many countries. Field and experimental studies indicate that hypersensitive mange is detrimental to performance of growing pigs. Typically, producers tolerate mange infestation in their herds and control measures are often haphazard. This tolerance to mange infestation is attributable to the covert nature of the losses (reduced growth rate and feed efficiency without mortality) and to the fact that clinical signs of hypersensitive mange (pruritus) are usually viewed as normal. Lack of tools to evaluate mange severity in pigs and to demonstrate its importance has hindered the efforts of veterinarians to control the disease. Traditionally, veterinarians have used slaughter inspections to assess respiratory diseases such as enzootic pneumonia and atrophic rhinitis. Much of the value of slaughter inspections is as a tool with which veterinarians can educate and motivate their clients to improve disease control measures. The potential for evaluating hypersensitive mange by inspecting slaughtered pigs for lesions of papular dermatitis was recognised some time ago, but quantitative evaluation of the reliability of this approach has been lacking. We have conducted several studies in Australia, the USA, Canada, Europe and Latin America to evaluate associations between Sarcoptes infestation and the severity of papular dermatitis at slaughter, using a simple ordinal scale for classifying carcasses. Our initial field and experimental data in Australia indicated the specificity of localised dermatitis to be in the order of 75-80%, but that the generalised dermatitis was highly specific (> 98%) for mange. Subsequent studies in the US Midwest yielded almost identical results, and indicated that the method may also have some utility for surveillance of mange-free herds. Results from other locations invariably have shown significant associations between dermatitis lesions and mange infestation. Relative to other methods such as skin scrapings and monitoring pruritus, this method is simple and relatively objective, and should be considered for routine inclusion in slaughter inspection protocols.

OBJECTIVE To define temporal patterns and risk factors for development of decubital ulcers over the tuber of the spine of the scapula (tuber) of lactating sows. DESIGN Prospective study. ANIMALS 147 late-gestation sows and gilts. PROCEDURE Females were examined for skin lesions over the tubers, and body condition score, depth of back fat, and depth of soft tissues over the tuber (tuber depth) were determined (day 0). On days 5, 12, 18, 40, 54, and 68, sows were examined for lesions over the tubers. Data on sow parity, date of farrowing, total number of pigs born/litter, and number of stillborn pigs/ litter were obtained from farm records. RESULTS Ulcers were recorded for 33 of 206 (16%) shoulders by day 5. Peak prevalence (99/206; 48% of shoulders) was on day 12, and all ulcers had resolved by day 68. Ulcers were more common on the right shoulder. Considerable resolution of ulcers was evident between days 12 and 18, when sows still were housed in farrowing crates. Parity and tuber depth were significantly associated with ulcers and ulcer severity (size) on day 12. CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS Decubital ulcers in lactating sows are a multifactorial condition. Factors such as floor type are important, but other physiologic and behavioral factors of periparturient swine, including body weight, body condition and mobility of late-gestation animals, duration of farrowing, and patterns of recumbency and activity, appear to be important in the pathogenesis of lesions. Housing sows on hard floors is not a sufficient cause of decubital ulcers over the scapula.

OBJECTIVE To compare prevalence of fecal shedding of Salmonella organisms and serum antibodies to Salmonella sp in market-age pigs housed in barns with partially slotted floors or solid floors with open-flush gutters. DESIGN Cross-sectional study of prevalence. SAMPLE POPULATION Finishing-age pigs deemed by the producer to be within 1 month of slaughter. PROCEDURE Fecal and serum samples were obtained from a group of 121 pigs housed in a barn with solid floors (31 fecal samples, 30 serum samples) and from a group of about 400 pigs housed on partially slotted floors (57 fecal samples, 64 serum samples). Fecal samples were submitted for bacteriologic culture to detect Salmonella organisms, and serum samples were tested for antibodies by use of ELISA. RESULTS Salmonella agona was isolated from 26 of 31 (84%) fecal samples obtained from pigs housed in the open-flush gutter barn, compared with 5 of 57 (9%) fecal samples from pigs in the barn with slotted floors. Median value for optical density was higher for serum samples from pigs housed in the open-flush gutter barn. CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS Housing of finishing-age swine in barns with open-flush gutters may contribute to increased shedding of Salmonella sp. Analysis of our observations indicated that repeated exposure to infected feces is important in prolonging fecal shedding by swine.

Abstract
We describe a patient with unexpected spina bifida who underwent spinal anaesthesia for trans-urethral resection of prostate and developed serious neurological signs. An unexpected spinal tumour was removed two weeks later. This report demonstrates that not all neurological problems associated with spinal anaesthesia should be blamed on the technique.

Graduated compression stockings can reduce the incidence of deep vein thrombosis by 60 per cent1, by providing a decreasing compression gradient from the ankle towards the thigh. There is both theoretical and clinical evidence that compression of the thigh as well as the calf does not give extra benefit2,3. Although regarded as safe, improperly used stockings are not without risk. Problems are usually due to areas of localized high pressure, especially under ‘rucked up’ constricting bands of stocking. This is particularly so in the presence of ischaemia; manufacturers state that ischaemia is a contraindication to stocking use. Cases of arterial thrombosis have been reported4, as well as more frequent skin necrosis, when stockings have been used in the presence of reduced arterial blood supply5.

Abstract
A double-blind, randomised, placebo-controlled study was performed to assess the antiemetic efficacy of ondansetron in women receiving morphine from a patient-controlled analgesia system after total abdominal hysterectomy. Sixty-six ASA grade 1 or 2 patients scheduled for total abdominal hysterectomy were randomly allocated into one of two groups. All patients received a standardised anaesthetic and postoperative patient-controlled analgesia regimen. Group 1 received ondansetron 4 mg at induction of anaesthesia, repeated 8 h later. Group 2 received saline as a placebo at the same times. Pain scores, nausea scores, episodes of vomiting, use of rescue antiemetics and recollection of nausea and vomiting were not different between the groups. Only 15% of patients who received ondansetron and 30% of patients who received the placebo recorded no nausea or vomiting in the first 24 h. We conclude that ondansetron, in the dose studied, does not reduce nausea and vomiting in women receiving morphine from a patient-controlled analgesia system after total abdominal hysterectomy.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate agreement between trained veterinarians and a reference inspector when recording gross lesions of lungs, livers, and nasal turbinates of pigs. DESIGN Prospective study. SAMPLE POPULATION 10 veterinarians in workshop 1 and 11 veterinarians in workshop 2. PROCEDURE Analysis of data obtained from 2 workshops in which veterinarians evaluated fresh tissues (30 lungs and 30 livers) and 100 slides of nasal turbinates previously evaluated by the reference inspector. Veterinarians independently recorded observations of gross lesions. Agreement was evaluated by percentage agreement, kappa or weighted kappa, and sensitivity and specificity, where relevant. RESULTS Agreement between veterinarians and the reference inspector was excellent for detecting consolidation of lung lobes typical of enzootic pneumonia (kappa = 0.81 and 0.87 for workshops 1 and 2, respectively) and white spots on livers (kappa = 0.76 and 0.78). Estimates of the extent of consolidation as a proportion of lung volume also agreed closely with reference values. Agreement was closer for veterinarians who had undergone repeated training and evaluation. Agreement was good for detecting nasal turbinate atrophy (weighted kappa = 0.63 and 0.68) and was poorest for detecting lesions of pleuritis (kappa = 0.39 and 0.44). CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS For most of the lesions evaluated, acceptable levels of agreement with reference scores were achieved after training of veterinarians to use standardized methods to record gross lesions. Standardization of veterinarians' recordings of gross lesions should improve the reliability and usefulness of data collected by inspection of slaughtered pigs.

OBJECTIVE To determine attitudes of participating veterinarians toward a standardized slaughter-monitoring program for swine. DESIGN Survey by mail questionnaire. SAMPLE POPULATION 30 of 35 veterinarians in Minnesota who had participated in the program in 1993. PROCEDURE Survey was conducted regarding a slaughter-monitoring program. Respondents answered questions related to professional experience, use of slaughter inspections, methods, advantages and disadvantages of the program, effects on clients and business, labor requirements, referral of inspections, confidence in identifying lesions, and usefulness of reports for on-farm decision making. RESULTS 27 respondents expressed overall satisfaction with the program. Perceived advantages of the program included use of standardized methods, quality of reports, inspection of more types of lesions, and accumulation of data. Disadvantages predominantly related to increased time commitments for veterinarians. Data considered most useful for on-farm decision making were white spots on livers, nasal turbinate atrophy, and lesions indicative of papular dermatitis and enzootic pneumonia. Respondents perceived positive effects of participating in this program in the areas of recruitment of clients, frequency of visits to clients, recommendations made to the clients, satisfaction of client needs, and generation of revenue. CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS A standardized slaughter-monitoring program designed to provide improved information from slaughter inspections may be beneficial to the businesses of participating veterinarians.

Abstract
A polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay was used to confirm the presence of ileal symbiont (IS) intracellularis in 3 swine herds with a history of proliferative enteritis (PE). Two pooled fecal specimens, each comprising 5 individual stool samples, were collected from pen floors to screen for the presence of IS intracellularis and determine the age range of pigs shedding the organism. IS intracellularis was detected in the feces of clinically normal 10-25-week-old grower/finisher pigs, indicating that this age range of pigs was the main source of infection for younger nursery pigs. Shedding continued without clinical disease when 10-100 g/ton of tylosin or 10 g/ton of chlortetracycline was added to the feed. PCR testing of pooled fecal samples can be used to identify groups of pigs affected with PE. The results of this study indicate that this PCR assay has the potential to accurately assess the IS intracellularis infection status of swine herds and the association of IS intracellularis with PE and growth performance.

OBJECTIVE To determine prevalence and risk factors for decubital ulcers of the shoulder in sows. DESIGN Descriptive cross-sectional study. SAMPLE POPULATION All females of breeding age in a large confinement swine facility. PROCEDURE 1,916 females were examined for lesions of the skin over the tuber of the spine of the scapula and for body condition scoring. Observational data were combined with sow data (parity, date of farrowing, litter size) contained in computerized records. RESULTS Decubital ulcers were observed in 8.3% of females, predominantly lactating sows. Ulcer prevalence was strongly associated with time after farrowing. Lesions apparently healed rapidly after weaning. Ulcer prevalence was associated with low body condition scores, but was not associated with parity. IMPLICATIONS Decubital ulcers are a multifactorial condition. Housing on concrete floors per se did not result in ulcers. Prolonged recumbency during parturition, reduced activity in early lactation, periparturient illness, thin body condition, moist skin, and floor type are potential risk factors.

Abstract
We investigated the association between the presence of papular dermatitis and sarcoptic mite infestation in pigs slaughtered in southern Minnesota. Following dehairing, a sample of 30 pigs from each of 50 herds was inspected for papular dermatitis lesions. Herds were selected after being categorized into one of five categories according to the prevalence and severity of dermatitis lesions. Herd infestation with sarcoptic mange was determined by recovery of mites from ear scrapings of slaughtered pigs and also by survey of producer opinion. Mite infestation was detected in 28 herds (56%) and 215 of 1500 pigs (14%). Considerable variability in prevalence of positive scrapings, ranging from one pig (3%) to 19 pigs (63%), was found among infested herds. Prevalence of mite infestation was positively associated with severity of papular dermatitis lesions in groups. For individual pigs, estimates of the specificity of localized lesions ranged from 0.70 to 0.90. Generalized lesions appear highly specific (> 0.98) for sarcoptic mite hypersensitivity. Generalized lesions occurred in 36.7% of pigs from herds confirmed to be infested, compared with 0.4% of pigs in herds confirmed free from mange. Our date indicate that monitoring of dermatitis lesions in slaughtered pigs might be a useful test for sarcoptic mange in the Midwest, USA.

Abstract
Cost-effective control of sarcoptic mange requires knowledge of the effects of the disease on production. This paper presents a critical review of the literature on the association between sarcoptic mange and reduced production performance of swine. One of the difficulties in interpreting inconsistent findings among studies is lack of information about the severity of disease, which is likely to vary considerably. Lack of standard methods and failure to quantify disease severity preclude meaningful interpretation of experimental results in commercial production. Three experiments with growing pigs were conducted to evaluate associations between sarcoptic mite infestation and growth rate, and to assess pruritic behaviour and mite-induced lesions at slaughter as indices of mange severity. Sarcoptic mange was associated with increased pruritic behaviour and the presence of papular dermatitis at slaughter. Pruritic behaviour decreased over time despite reinfestation and may be subject to numerous behavioural influences. Growth rate tended to be slower in mange infested pigs, but a significant effect of mange infestation on average daily gain was found in only one trial, in which the severity of skin lesions at slaughter was greatest. These observations suggest that the production effects of mange infestation of growing pigs are variable. Evaluating dermatitis lesions at slaughter may be an objective means for assessing the severity of mange infestation and for relating experimental results to commercial swine production.

Abstract
A rapid subjective method for estimating the extent of gross pneumonia lesions in slaughtered pigs was compared with dissection of lungs in 51 slaughtered pigs. After standardization for prevalence in the regional industry, regression analysis indicated that the subjective method was highly predictive of the extent of pneumonic lesions (R2 = 0.88). Part of the error with the subjective method was attributed to approximations used for the relative proportions of lung lobes, which result in overestimation of the affected tissue by approximately 20%. Retrospective analysis of data from a slaughter monitoring program revealed strong associations (R2, 0.54 to 0.91) between prevalence, mean, median, and maximal lung scores in groups of pigs. Maximal lung score was biased by sample size, but prevalence and mean or median lung scores could be used to describe pneumonia severity in groups of pigs. Our results indicate that error in measurement of the extent of pneumonic tissue in slaughtered pigs is unimportant if the time of onset, clinical severity, and duration of disease are not quantified.

Abstract
Seasonal variation of reproductive performance of female swine was analyzed by use of a data base that included farrowing records from 42 commercial swine herds. Farrowing rates of sows bred during December or January were higher (P < 0.001) than those bred in July or August (79.2 vs 74.1%). The percentage of sows with irregular (prolonged) return-to-estrus intervals after mating in December or January (2.63%) was lower (P < 0.01) than those mated in July or August (4.65%). Sows mated in November through January had greater total number of pigs born per litter (11.66 vs 11.19 pigs per litter), more pigs born alive per litter (10.39 vs 9.84 pigs per litter), and greater litter birth weights (15.20 vs 14.28 kg) than sows mated in June through August (P < 0.001). Adjusted 21-day litter weights were lower (P < 0.001) for litters from sows farrowing in July or August (52.04 kg) than sows farrowing in all other months (55.13 kg) except June and September. Sows that had their litters weaned in June through August had longer (P < 0.001) weaning-to-estrus intervals (7.95 days) than sows that had their litters weaned in November through January (6.84 days). The effects of season varied across parties. Primiparous sows had the greatest seasonal variability in weaning-to-estrus interval, whereas multiparous sows had the greatest seasonal variability in total number of pigs born per litter and pigs born alive per litter.
