Abstract
We report retrospectively a series of four cases involving the successful use of the recently described parascapular sub-iliocostalis plane block (PSIP), for lateral-posterior rib fractures. The efficacy of the PSIP block may potentially depend on different mechanisms of action: (1) direct action in the fracture site by craniocaudal myofascial spread underneath the erector spinae muscle (ESM); (2) spread to deep layers through tissue disruption caused by trauma, to reach the proximal intercostal nerves; (3) medial spread below the ESM, to reach the posterior spinal nerves; and (4) lateral spread in the sub-serratus (SS) plane to reach the lateral cutaneous branches of the intercostal nerves; while avoiding significant negative hemodynamic effects and other possible complications associated to other techniques leading that the PSIP may be considered an alternative in some clinical scenarios to the Erector Spinae Plane block or the Paravertebral block.

Abstract
The use of simpler and less bulky equipment, with a reliable performance and at relative low cost is increasingly important when assembling sensing configurations for a wide variety of applications. Based on this concept, this paper proposes a simple, efficient and relative low-cost fiber Bragg grating (FBG) interrogation solution using ultra-short FBGs (USFBGs) as edge filters. USFBGs with different lengths and reflection bandwidths were produced in silica optical fiber and in poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) microstructured polymer optical fiber (mPOF), and by adjusting specific inscription parameters and the diffraction pattern, these gratings can present self-apodization and unique spectral characteristics suitable for filtering operations. In addition to being a cost-effective edge filter solution, USFBGs and standard uniform FBGs in silica fiber have similar thermal sensitivities, which results in a straightforward operation without complex equipment or calculations. This FBG interrogation configuration is also quite promising for dynamic measurements, and due to its multiplexing capabilities multiple USFBGs can be inscribed in the same optical fiber, allowing to incorporate several filters with identical or different spectral characteristics at specific wavelength regions in the same fiber, thus showing great potential to create and develop new sensing configurations.

Abstract
This work describes a 3D-printed optofluidic fiber sensor to measure refractive index in real time, combining a microfluidic system with an optical fiber extrinsic Fabry-Perot interferometer. The microfluidic chip platform was developed for this purpose through 3D printing. The Fabry-Perot cavity was incorporated in the microfluidic chip perpendicularly to the sample flow, which was of approximately 3.7 µL/s. The optofluidic fiber sensor platform coupled with a low-cost optical power meter detector was characterized using different concentrations of glucose solutions. In the linear regression analysis, the optical power shift was correlated with the refractive index and a sensitivity of -86.6 dB/RIU (r2 = 0.996) was obtained. Good results were obtained in terms of stability with a maximum standard deviation of 0.03 dB and a sensor resolution of 5.2 × 10-4 RIU. The feasibility of the optofluidic fiber sensor for dynamic analyses of refractive index with low sample usage was confirmed through real-time measurements.

Abstract
The detection of bond-slip between the reinforcing bar (RB) and concrete is of great importance to ensure the safety of reinforced concrete (RC) structures. The techniques to monitor the connection between the RB and concrete are in constant development, with special focus on the ones with straightforward operation and simple non-intrusive implementation. In this work, a simple configuration is developed using 10 optical fiber sensors, allowing different sections of the same RC structure to be monitored. Since the RB may suffer different strains along its length, the location of the sensors is critical to provide an early warning about any displacement. Bragg gratings were inscribed in both silica and polymer optical fibers and these devices worked as displacement sensors by monitoring the strain variations on the fibers. The results showed that these sensors can be easily implemented in a civil construction environment, and due to the small dimensions, they can be a non-intrusive technique when multiple sensors are implemented in the same RC structure.

Abstract
As corrosion has slow development, its detection at an early age could be an alternative for reducing costs of structural rehabilitation. Therefore, the employment of structural health monitoring (SHM) systems, sensing configurations collecting data over time allowing for observing changes in the properties of the materials and damage emergence, for monitoring corrosion can be a good strategy to measure the damage and to decide the better moment for intervention. Nonetheless, the current corrosion sensor technology and the high costs of the sensing system implementation are limiting this application in the field. In this work, an optical fiber Bragg grating (FBG)-based sensing system is proposed for monitoring the thickness loss of a 1020 carbon steel metal plate subjected to controlled corrosion. The natural frequency of the plate was collected as a function of the corrosion time over 3744 h. To validate the experimental results, ultrasound measures and electrochemical tests were also carried out under similar conditions. The experimental results show adequate reliability, indicating the suitable functionality of the proposed system for monitoring the thickness loss caused by corrosion in metallic structures, in comparison with traditional methods, as ultrasonic and electrochemical measures.

Abstract
This work proposes a 3D-printed sensor based on fiber Bragg grating (FBG) technology for respiratory rate (RR) and heart rate (HR) monitoring. Each sensor is composed of a single FBG fully encapsulated into a 3D-printable Flexible, during the printing process. Sensors with different material thicknesses and infill densities were tested. The sensor with the best metrological properties was selected and preliminary assessed in terms of capability of monitoring RR and HR on three users. Preliminary results proved that the developed sensor can be a valuable easy-to-fabricate solution, with high reproducibility and high strain sensitivity to chest wall deformations due to breathing and heart beating.

Abstract
The fused deposition modelling technique has been used in the production of strain sensors in which fibre Bragg gratings (FBGs) are encapsulated during the 3D printing process. This paper reports the study of the influence of the FBG position and the material filling, in this case a flexible polymer material, on the sensors’ sensitivity and overall performance. In addition, this study preliminarily evaluated the ability of the strain sensor to monitor (heart rate) HR and (respiratory rate) RR as a wearable on the wrist and as a non-intrusive solution on the back of an office chair.

Abstract
Developing technologies capable of constantly assessing and optimizing day-to-day activities has been a research priority for several years. A key factor in such technologies is the use of highly sensitive sensors to monitor in real-time numerous parameters, such as temperature and load. Due to their unique features, optical fiber sensors became one of the most interesting and viable solutions for applications dependent on those parameters. In this work, we present an optical fiber load sensor, called load cell, based on Fabry-Pérot hollow cavities embedded in a polymeric material. By using the load cells in a parallel configuration with a non-embedded hollow cavity, the optical Vernier effect was generated, allowing maximum sensitivity values of 0.433 nm N-1 and 0.66 nm °C-1 to be attained for vertical load and temperature, respectively. The proposed sensor's performance, allied with the proposed configuration, makes it a viable and suitable device for a wide range of applications, namely those requiring high thermal and load sensitivities.

Abstract
This Letter presents the development of a low-cost polymer optical fiber (POF) sensor for mechanical wave monitoring. The POF is fabricated using the light polymerization spinning process (LPS-POF) with Bisphenol-A as its main component, resulting in a highly flexible fiber. The proposed LPS-POF sensor is applied on the assessment of squared waves with different amplitudes, where the amplitude and dynamic responses are compared to the ones of a piezoelectric transducer (PZT). In static conditions, a determination coefficient (R2) of 0.990 is obtained between the reference (PZT) and proposed sensors for the amplitude assessment of the wave. In dynamic analysis, the LPS-POF viscoelasticity is compensated using viscoelastic constitutive models, resulting in a R2 of 0.988 between the sensor responses, which indicate a mean error reduction of 21% when compared to the uncompensated responses in the amplitudes of different square waves. The dynamic analysis also shows the sensor capability of operating in frequencies as high as 25 Hz. Then, the sensor's responses, compared to the input squared wave, show the possibility of wave velocity measurement. Therefore, with a LPS-POF sensor array, it is possible to monitor these parameters in practical applications.

Abstract
This data article provides useful information often required for numerical modeling of the so-called microbond tests. It includes the experimental and simulation data of the microbond testing using Fibre Bragg Grating (FBG) fibres for optical strains. Microbond testing was performed on five different droplets of varying embedded length and diameter to collect the data. Finite element simulation was carried out and modelling was validated, by using two variables force and strain, to collect the data. The output data of the fitted models is given and is also visualized via graphs of force-strain derivative curves. The data of the simulations is provided for different finite element mesh densities. Here, to clarify the type and form of the data for the use by readers, the energy distribution curves describing various functionalities of the droplet, fibre and interface are presented. For further reading, the interpretation and analysis of this data can be found in a research article titled “3D interfacial debonding during microbond testing: Advantages of local strain recording” (R. Dsouza et al., 2020) [1].

Abstract
Optical backscatter reflectometry (OBR) is a method for the interrogation of Rayleigh scattering occurring in each section of an optical fiber, resulting in a single-fiber-distributed sensor with sub-millimeter spatial resolution. The use of high-scattering fibers, doped with MgO-based nanoparticles in the core section, provides a scattering increase which can overcome 40 dB. Using a configuration-labeled Scattering-Level Multiplexing (SLMux), we can arrange a network of high-scattering fibers to perform a simultaneous scan of multiple fiber sections, therefore extending the OBR method from a single fiber to multiple fibers. In this work, we analyze the performance and boundary limits of SLMux, drawing the limits of detection of N-channel SLMux, and evaluating the performance of scattering-enhancement methods in optical fibers.

BACKGROUND
Intraoperative transesophageal echocardiography (iTEE) has an important role in mitral valve (MV) surgery, but may have dissimilar parameters from postoperative echocardiography (post-TTE). We aimed to evaluate iTTE Doppler flow profile and compare with the post-TTE in MV surgery.
METHODS
We conducted a prospective, observational study of 126 patients that underwent MVsurgery during 2 years. iTEE evaluated mean pressure gradient (MPG) and functional area. Patients were re-evaluated with TTE, 72 hours after surgery (post-TTE). iTEE and post-TTE Doppler values were compared and correlated. Preoperative TTE (pre-TTE) parameters were also determined.
RESULTS
The mean age was 59 ± 18 years and 55% were female. The prevalence of severe mitral regurgitation (MR) was 77.6% and severe mitral stenosis (MS) 23.7%. Globally, mitral valve repair was performed in 71%cases (83% for MR and 15% for MS) and replacement in 29% (64% for MR and 46% for MS). Left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF), systolic pulmonary artery pressure (sPAP), tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion (TAPSE) assessed in pre-TTE and post-TTE, as also MPG and functional area in post-TTE and iTEE are depicted on table 1. There was a higher numerical difference in iTEE vs post-TTE MPG values in mechanical valves (n = 5) (3.5 ± 1.2 to 5.2 ± 1.6, difference of 1.65 ± 2.4mmHg), than in biological valves (n = 17) (3.1 ± 1.1 to 3.9 ± 1.5, difference of 0.8 ± 1.7mmHg). Globally, iTEE-derived MPG and functional area were strongly correlated with their post-TTE values (r2 0.7 and 0.8,p < 0.001).
CONCLUSIONS
iTEE Doppler parameters were strongly correlated with postoperative TTE parameters, with minimal differences: postoperative MPG were +0.4 ± 1mmHg higher in MV repair and +1.0 ± 1.8mmHg in MV replacement. There was a global improvement in sPAP. Our study demonstrates the usefulness of iTEE and its importance in stablishing possible reference values for postoperative follow-up.

Abstract
In this work, a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) based sensing system for wheelchair pressure ulcer prevention was developed. Six FBGs were strategically positioned in a wheelchair to monitor the more prominent bone areas, namely scapulas (right (SR) and left (SL)), ischiatic zone (right (IR) and left (IL)), and heels (right (HR) and left (HL)). The sensing architecture was tested by a female user during pressure relief exercises, to verify its effectiveness on pressure monitoring. The proposed system proves to be a compact and reliable solution for wheelchair pressure ulcer prevention, making it a suitable alternative to existing conventional electronic sensors, with the advantage of being immune to electromagnetic interferences and usable in humid environments. In addition to the pressure, the breathing rate was also monitored. By combining the proposed sensing architecture with a wheelchair user detection software, it is possible to create alerts for the user to know when a new position should be adopted, in order to relieve the pressure in a specific area, thus avoiding one of the biggest problems for such patients, pressure ulcers.

Abstract
We present the first Bragg gratings fabricated in two, three and five rings undoped PMMA microstructured polymer optical fibres (mPOFs) with relative low cost 266 nm Nd:YAG laser in the 850 nm region. The fibers were connectorised with commercial ferrules for easy coupling with silica patch cables. Temperature, humidity and strain sensitivities are measured and also the impact of ring structure and the diameter of POF on the characterization measurements are studied for potential applications. We also analyzed the effect of the number of hexagonal rings structure in gratings fabrication, noticing that larger number of rings lead to more difficulties to obtain strong gratings, where we consider this performance due to the scattering effects. We demonstrate Bragg gratings fabrication in 5-rings structure mPOF after 6 min by using 266 nm Nd:YAG laser whereas no Bragg gratings have been fabricated so far using 325 nm He-Cd laser system. Up to 30 dB relative reflected power gratings are obtained in two rings mPOF, showing good time stability and promising results for undoped mPOF applications.

Abstract
In this Letter, we report on a simple, but highly sensitive sensor based on two intrinsic Fabry-Perot interferometers (FPIs) inscribed in a standard single-mode optical fiber. A brief theoretical study on the Vernier effect is presented, in which a simulation of the sensitivity magnification factor dependence on the FPI's length is performed. Based on the simulation results, the FPIs were fabricated using a custom micromachining setup that integrates a near-infrared femtosecond laser and a motorized XYZ platform. Using the Vernier effect, sensitivities of 145 pm/με and 927 pm/°C were obtained for strain and temperature, respectively. The sensor's performance combined with its versatile and customizable configuration allows real-time and in situ strain and temperature monitoring under harsh environments.

Abstract
We obtained chirped gratings by performing hot water gradient thermal annealing of uniform poly (methylmethacrylate) (PMMA) microstructured polymer optical fiber Bragg gratings (POFBGs). The proposed method's simplicity is one of its main advantages because no special phase mask or additional etching are needed. It not only enables easy control tuning of the central wavelength and chirp characteristics, but it also leads to obtain flexible grating response, compared with tapered chirped POFBGs. Therefore, a flexible and low-cost chirped POFBG devices fabrication technique has been presented by using a single uniform phase mask.

Abstract
We demonstrate a largely tunable dispersion fiber Bragg grating (FBG) inscribed in a microstructured polymer optical fiber (mPOF). The bandwidth of the chirped FBG (CFBG) was achieved from 0.11 to 4.86 nm, which corresponds to a tunable dispersion range from 513.6 to 11.15 ps/nm. Furthermore, thermal sensitivity is used to compensate for the wavelength shift due to the applied strain. These results demonstrate that a CFBG in a POF is a promising technology for future optical systems.

Abstract
We present results for the mechanical characterization of a bisphenol-A acrylate-based polymer optical fiber (POF) manufactured using a novel light polymerization spinning (LPS) process. The particular manufacturing process allows the development of POFs having unique mechanical characteristics, which result from an exceptionally low Young's modulus. The lower Young's modulus enables optical sensors for measuring stress or pressure with improved sensitivity and potentially a higher tunable mechanical range than conventional POFs. Moreover, properties such as the storage modulus variations with respect to the temperature and humidity were studied. Fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs), were inscribed in the POF using the plane-by-plane femtosecond laser, direct-write method for selective FBG mode excitation, and were characterized for changes to temperature, pressure, and relative humidity. The response of FBGs in this LPS-POF for all the three aforementioned measurands was several times higher than that measured for conventional POFs.

Abstract
We experimentally demonstrate the first polymer optical fiber Bragg gratings inscribed with only one Nd:YAG laser (266 nm) pulse. The gratings have been inscribed in a single-mode poly (methyl methacrylate) optical fiber, with a core doped with benzyl dimethyl ketal for photosensitivity enhancement. One laser pulse with a duration of 8 ns and energy of 72 µJ is adequate to introduce a refractive index change of 0.5 × 10-4 in the fiber core. The stability of the gratings has been confirmed and the strain and temperature sensitivity measurements demonstrate their tunable properties.

Abstract
This Letter demonstrates the application of polymer optical fibers (POFs) damaged by the fiber fuse effect to curvature sensing and dynamic angular monitoring. The curvature sensing performance using the fused-POF is compared to POF without the fuse effect. Both POFs are submitted to angles of up to 90 deg in flexion/extension cycles with angular velocities ranging from 0.48 rad/s to 5.61 rad/s. The fused POF is found to show higher performance with respect to sensitivity, correlation coefficient with linear regression, and hysteresis. For instance, at the angular velocity of 0.48 rad/s, the fused POF shows >3 times higher sensitivity and significantly lower hysteresis than those of the non-fused POF. In addition, the fused POFs have lower cross-sensitivity and hysteresis variations on the tests with different angular velocities. These results indicate that the fused POFs are potential candidates to develop curvature sensors with various advantages over non-fused POFs, for applications such as gait analysis and wearable robotics.

Abstract
This paper presents the characterization of polymer optical fibers (POFs) submitted to the catastrophic fuse effect towards intensity-variation-based sensing of strain, transverse force, temperature, and moisture. In the experiments, POFs with and without the fuse effect are tested and the results are compared with respect to the sensitivity, linearity, and root mean squared error (RMSE). The fused POFs have higher linearity and lower RMSE than non-fused POFs in strain and transverse force sensing. Also, the sensitivity of the fused POFs is higher in transverse force and temperature sensing, which can be related to the higher sensitivity to the curvature that the transverse force creates on the POF and to the more significant variations of the refractive index with temperature increase. Additionally, the fused POFs present lower moisture absorption than the non-fused POFs. The presented results indicate a great potential of the fused POFs intensity-variation-based sensing applications of various physical parameters.

Abstract
This Letter presents, for the first time, to the best of our knowledge, the dynamic mechanical analysis of a polymer optical fiber (POF) that was previously damaged by the catastrophic fuse effect. The variation of the fiber Young's modulus was evaluated with respect to the increase of temperature, humidity, and frequency of strain cycles. The obtained data for the fused POF are compared with the ones for the same POF without the fuse effect. The results show the feasibility of the fused POF for sensor applications, such as strain and acceleration measurement, since it presents temperature sensitivity almost two times lower in temperatures between 26°C and 90°C and Young's modulus 2.3 times lower than those obtained with the bare fiber. The Young's modulus variation with the humidity is 1.5 MPa/%RH in a humidity range of 66-96%. In addition, the fused POF presented a variation of its dynamic modulus with the frequency increase four times lower than non-fused POFs on the range of 0.01-100.00 Hz. These results pave the way for future applications of fused POFs as sensing elements.

Abstract
This paper presents fiber Bragg grating (FBG) inscription with a pulsed 248 nm UV KrF laser in polymer optical fibers (POFs) made of different polymers, namely polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), cyclic-olefin polymer and co-polymer, and Polycarbonate. The inscribed gratings and the corresponding inscription parameters are compared with grating inscribed in POFs made of the aforementioned materials but with the hitherto most used laser for inscription, which is a continuous wave 325 nm UV HeCd laser. Results show a reduction of the inscription time of at least 16 times. The maximum time reduction is more than 130 times. In addition, a reflectivity and a bandwidth close to or higher than the ones with the 325 nm laser were obtained. The polymer optical fiber Bragg gratings (POFBGs) inscribed with the 248 nm laser setup present high stability with small variations in their central wavelength, bandwidth, and reflectivity after 40 days.

Abstract
We propose a novel polymer optical fiber (POF) sensing system based on fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) to measure foot plantar pressure. The plantar pressure signals are detected by five FBGs, in the same piece of cyclic transparent optical polymer (CYTOP) fiber, which are embedded in a cork insole for the dynamic monitoring of gait. The calibration and measurements performed with the suggested system are presented, and the results obtained demonstrate the accuracy and reliability of the sensing platform to monitor the foot plantar pressure distribution during gait motion and the application of pressure. This architecture does not compromise the patient's mobility nor interfere in their daily activities. The results using the CYTOP fiber showed a very good response when compared with solutions using silica optical fibers, resulting in a sensitivity almost twice as high, with excellent repeatability and ease of handling. The advantages of POF (e.g., high flexibility and robustness) proved that this is a viable solution for this type of application, since POF's high fracture toughness enables its application in monitoring patients with higher body mass compared with similar systems based on silica fiber. This study has demonstrated the viability of the proposed system based on POF technology as a useful alternative for plantar pressure detection systems.

Abstract
In an era of unprecedented progress in technology and increase in population age, continuous and close monitoring of elder citizens and patients is becoming more of a necessity than a luxury. Contributing toward this field and enhancing the life quality of elder citizens and patients with disabilities, this work presents the design and implementation of a noninvasive platform and insole fiber Bragg grating sensors network to monitor the vertical ground reaction forces distribution induced in the foot plantar surface during gait and body center of mass displacements. The acquired measurements are a reliable indication of the accuracy and consistency of the proposed solution in monitoring and mapping the vertical forces active on the foot plantar sole, with a sensitivity up to 11.06 ?? pm / N . The acquired measurements can be used to infer the foot structure and health condition, in addition to anomalies related to spine function and other pathologies (e.g., related to diabetes); also its application in rehabilitation robotics field can dramatically reduce the computational burden of exoskeletons’ control strategy. The proposed technology has the advantages of optical fiber sensing (robustness, noninvasiveness, accuracy, and electromagnetic insensitivity) to surpass all drawbacks verified in traditionally used sensing systems (fragility, instability, and inconsistent feedback).

Abstract
In this work, fibre Bragg gratings (FBGs) were inscribed in two different undoped poly- (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) polymer optical fibres (POFs) using different types of UV lasers and their inscription times, temperature and strain sensitivities are investigated. The POF Bragg gratings (POFBGs) were inscribed using two UV lasers: a continuous UV HeCd @325 nm laser and a pulsed UV KrF @248 nm laser. Two PMMA POFs are used in which the primary and secondary preforms (during the two-step drawing process) have a different thermal treatment. The PMMA POFs drawn in which the primary or secondary preform is not specifically pre-treated need longer inscription time than the fibres drawn where both preforms have been pre-annealed at 80 °C for 2 weeks. Using both UV lasers, for the latter fibre much less inscription time is needed compared to another homemade POF. The properties of a POF fabricated with both preforms thermally well annealed are different from those in which just one preform step process is thermally treated, with the first POFs being much less sensitive to thermal treatment. The influence of annealing on the strain and temperature sensitivities of the fibres prior to FBG inscription is also discussed, where it is observed that the fibre produced from a two-step drawing process with well-defined pre-annealing of both preforms did not produce any significant difference in sensitivity. The results indicate the impact of preform thermal pre-treatment before the PMMA POFs drawing, which can be an essential characteristic in the view of developing POF sensors technology.

Abstract
In this study, the lipophilic and hydrophilic phenol composition of virgin olive oils (VOO) obtained from olives from two of the most important Portuguese cultivars ('Galega Vulgar' and 'Cobrançosa'), harvested at different ripening stages and under two irrigation schemes (rain fed and irrigated), was evaluated. Phenolic alcohols (hydroxytyrosol and tyrosol), phenolic acids and derivatives and flavonoids (luteolin and apigenin), as well as tocopherols were quantified. Lipophilic (>300mgkg(-1)) and hydrophilic phenols (>600mgkg(-1)) were present in high contents in both VOO, for early ripening stages. Gamma-tocopherol content is higher in 'Galega Vulgar' VOO. Total phenols showed a decrease between ripening index 2.5 and 3.5. The dialdehydic form of elenolic acid linked to hydroxytyrosol (3,4-DHPEA-EDA), also known as oleacein, was the major phenolic compound identified in both oils. The concentration of free hydroxytyrosol and tyrosol in both VOO is very low while their esterified derivatives, like 3,4-DHPEA-EDA and p-HPEA-EDA, are much more abundant.

Abstract
To better understand the recent success/emergence of Salmonella enterica serotype 4,[5],12:i:- we characterized the population diversity, fljAB deletion patterns, antibiotic resistance features and associated genetic elements of a comprehensive collection obtained in the last decade from Portugal (2002-2010). One hundred thirty-one isolates from human clinical specimens, food, environment and piggeries, verified by PCR as S. 4,[5],12:i:-, were studied for clonality (Pulsed-Field Gel Electrophoresis and Multilocus Sequence Typing), antibiotic resistance by phenotypic (disk diffusion and/or agar dilution) and genotypic (PCR/Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism and sequencing, genomic location) methods and fljAB-deletions (PCR). Plasmid analysis included determination of size, content and characterization of the incompatibility group (PCR-Based Replicon Typing and I-CeuI/S1-hybridization). Results showed three multidrug-resistant (MDR) clones circulating and causing infections, associated with particular phenotypic and genotypic features. Most of the isolates belonged to the widespread European (ASSuT phenotype, RR1-RR2 resistance regions, ST34) and Spanish (carrying a sul3-type III integron within IncA/C plasmids, ST19) clones circulating in Europe. A third clone, here designated Southern European clone (carrying a sul3-type I integron within IncR plasmids, ST19), presents a fljAB region different from the previous clones and similar to the US strains, despite differences in the MDR mobile genetic platforms. The success of S. 4,[5],12:i:- might be related to the selective advantage offered by MDR profiles associated with stable genetic elements, also carrying virulence features, along with well adapted clones to the animal food production and causing human infections.

Abstract
The arterial stiffness evaluation is largely reported as an independent predictor of cardiovascular diseases. The central pulse waveform can provide important data about arterial health and has been studied in patients with several pathologies, such as diabetes mellitus, coronary artery disease and hypertension. The implementation and feasibility studies of a fiber Bragg grating probe for noninvasive monitoring of the carotid pulse are described based on fiber Bragg grating technology. Assessment tests were carried out in carotids of different volunteers and it was possible to detect the carotid pulse waveform in all subjects. In one of the subjects, the sensor was also tested in terms of repeatability. Although further tests will be required for clinical investigation, the first studies suggest that the developed sensor can be a valid alternative to electromechanical tonometers.

In this paper we summarize the research activities at the Instituto de Telecomunicações—Pólo de Aveiro and University of Aveiro, in the field of fiber Bragg grating based sensors and their applications in dynamic measurements for Structural Health Monitoring of slender structures such as towers. In this work we describe the implementation of an optical biaxial accelerometer based on fiber Bragg gratings inscribed on optical fibers. The proof-of-concept was done with the dynamic monitoring of a reinforced concrete structure and a slender metallic telecommunication tower. Those structures were found to be suitable to demonstrate the feasibility of FBG accelerometers to obtain the structures' natural frequencies, which are the key parameters in Structural Health Monitoring and in the calibration of numerical models used to simulate the structure behavior.

Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the relationships between levels of organochlorine compounds (PCBs and DDTs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), metals and biomarkers of exposure (EROD and GST) and oxidative stress biomarkers, in wild and cultured European seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax). Additionally, the fatty acid profile was determined in muscle to assess differences between cultivated and wild specimens of marketable size. Although results pointed to relatively low concentration of contaminants, wild specimens presented enhanced accumulation of metals and cultivated specimens higher levels of organic compounds. Biomarkers were correlated with contaminants in tissues, showing that higher levels can cause effects at the biochemical level. Wild specimens have presented higher content on omega-3 fatty acids in muscle. Besides the useful application of biomarkers in wild species, this study has shown that they can also be applied to monitor biological effects in the fish farming process.

Abstract
The present study quantifies and explains the differences between measured organ-specific polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) accumulation and elimination kinetics in seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax), comparing these results with calculations using the generic model OMEGA. Specimens of approximately 250 g were selected and fed with contaminated food with PCBs 18, 44, 49, 52, 101, 105, 118, 138, 180 and 187. The OMEGA model was applied using a measured biomass (re)production coefficient and the food ingestion coefficient. It produced estimations of total body concentrations within a factor between 1.5 and 7.0 times of the measured and it also reproduced the general trend of the PCB concentrations during the experiment. This study allows us to confirm that internal distribution of PCBs is slow, producing significant differences in the tissues elimination rate constants and consequently in tissues bioaccumulation factors (BAF). The distribution of PCBs within the organism was slower than reported before, due to the bigger body size and the high lipid content of these fish.

Abstract
Persistent organic pollutants (POPs), which can accumulate in the adipose fish tissues, can enter the human food chain through the consumption of fish, and cause risk to health. The use of chemical analysis, and biochemical and cellular responses is a way to detect the impact of pollutants in aquatic systems. The purpose of this study was to investigate the levels of organochlorine compounds (polychlorinated biphenyls - PCB and p,p'-dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane and its metabolites - tDDT) in, wild and cultivated, white seabream (Diplodus sargus), and also its biological effects that were evaluated by assessing the activity of biotransformation enzymes and genotoxic effects. To achieve that we have sampled five different size classes (I - 13 g, II - 64 g, III - 143 g, IV - 315 g and V - 441 g) of white seabream from a local aquaculture, and also a group of wild fish (375g) in order to compare accumulation and responses between cultured and wild fish. White seabream, cultured and wild, presented low levels of organochlorine content, both in liver and in muscle. Wild white seabream, in comparison to cultured ones at the marketable size, showed lower organochlorine accumulation. Biotransformation enzymes showed negative correlations with organochlorine levels in liver. Micronucleous numbers revealed that wild white seabream are not so exposed to genotoxic compounds as cultured ones.

Abstract
Concentrations of 30 polychlorinated biphenyl congeners (CBs) were determined in muscle, liver and gonad tissues of female and male sardines (Sardina pilchardus) collected in February-May 2000 and September-January 2001 from purse seine vessels operating around Peniche, Portugal. The determined CBs were aggregated in four groups (I, II, III and IV), according to similarities of their chemical structures. Muscle and liver of males contained significantly higher concentrations of groups I and II than females during the final period of spawning (February-April). A less contrast was observed for the groups III and IV. This seasonal fluctuation associated with the spawning indicates that female sardines regulate the excess of CBs sequestrated during fatten period. On the contrary, levels of groups I and II were higher in males than in females indicating slower mobility of these compounds as lipids were consumed during the final period of spawning. The deficient regulation of those CBs in muscle of male sardines can not be attributed to selective transfer to gonads and subsequent excretion. Although the full explanation was not found for the different mobility of PCBs with the gender, the results provide evidence of slower elimination of group I and II congeners in male sardines.
