Topochemical Fluorination of LaBaInO4 to LaBaInO3F2, Their Optical Characterization, and Photocatalytic Activities for Hydrogen Evolution

We report on a nonoxidative topochemical route for the synthesis of a novel indate-based oxyfluoride, LaBaInO3F2, using a low-temperature reaction of Ruddlesden-Popper-type LaBaInO4 with polyvinylidene difluoride as a fluorinating agent. The reaction involves the replacement of oxide ions with fluoride ions as well as the insertion of fluoride ions into the interstitial sites. From the characterization via powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) and Rietveld analysis as well as automated electron diffraction tomography (ADT), it is deduced that the fluorination results in a symmetry lowering from I4/mmm (139) to monoclinic C2/c (15) with an expansion perpendicular to the perovskite layers and a strong tilting of the octahedra in the ab plane. Disorder of the anions on the apical and interstitial sites seems to be favored. The most stable configuration for the anion ordering is estimated based on an evaluation of bond distances from the ADT measurements via bond valence sums (BVSs). The observed disordering of the anions in the oxyfluoride results in changes in the optical properties and thus shows that the topochemical anion modification can present a viable route to alter the optical properties. Partial densities of states (PDOSs) obtained from ab initio density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal a bandgap modification upon fluoride-ion introduction which originates from the presence of the oxide anions on the interstitial sites. The photocatalytic performance of the oxide and oxyfluoride shows that both materials are photocatalytically active for hydrogen (H2) evolution.

X-ray Spectroscopic Study of the Electronic Structure of a Trigonal High-Spin Fe(IV)═O Complex Modeling Non-Heme Enzyme Intermediates and Their Reactivity

Fe K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) has long been used for the study of high-valent iron intermediates in biological and artificial catalysts. 4p-mixing into the 3d orbitals complicates the pre-edge analysis but when correctly understood via 1s2p resonant inelastic X-ray scattering and Fe L-edge XAS, it enables deeper insight into the geometric structure and correlates with the electronic structure and reactivity. This study shows that in addition to the 4p-mixing into the 3dz2 orbital due to the short iron-oxo bond, the loss of inversion in the equatorial plane leads to 4p mixing into the 3dx2-y2,xy, providing structural insight and allowing the distinction of 6- vs 5-coordinate active sites as shown through application to the Fe(IV)═O intermediate of taurine dioxygenase. Combined with O K-edge XAS, this study gives an unprecedented experimental insight into the electronic structure of Fe(IV)═O active sites and their selectivity for reactivity enabled by the π-pathway involving the 3dxz/yz orbitals. Finally, the large effect of spin polarization is experimentally assigned in the pre-edge (i.e., the α/β splitting) and found to be better modeled by multiplet simulations rather than by commonly used time-dependent density functional theory.

Fast Chemical Contrast by X-ray Fluorescence Intensity Ratio Detection

We describe a protocol for efficient detection of the chemical state of an element based on X-ray emission (fluorescence) spectroscopy using a Bragg optics spectrometer. The ratio of intensities at two appropriately chosen X-ray emission energies is a self-normalized quantity largely free of experimental artifacts and can thus be recorded with high accuracy. As the X-ray fluorescence lines are chemically sensitive, the intensity ratio identifies the chemical state. Differences between chemical states in spatially inhomogeneous or temporally evolving samples can be identified already with low numbers of photon events. This reduces the time required for data acquisition by 2 orders of magnitude as compared to recording a full spectrum.

Chemical Information in the L3 X-ray Absorption Spectra of Molybdenum Compounds by High-Energy-Resolution Detection and Density Functional Theory

X-ray spectroscopy using high-energy-resolution fluorescence detection (HERFD) has critically increased the information content in X-ray spectra. We extend this technique to the tender X-ray range and present a study at the L₃-edge of molybdenum. We show how information on the oxidation state, phase composition, and local environment in molybdenum-based compounds can be obtained by analyzing the HERFD L₃ X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES). We demonstrate that the chemical shift of the L₃-edge HERFD spectra follows a parabolic dependence on the oxidation state and show that a qualitative analysis of high-resolution spectra can help to estimate parameters such as distortion of a ligand environment and radial order of atoms around the absorber. In certain cases, the spectra allow disentangling the contributions from bond lengths and angles to the distortion of the ligand polyhedron. Comparison of the high-resolution spectra with theoretical simulations shows that the single-electron approximation is able to reproduce the spectral shape. The results of this work may be useful in every branch of physics, inorganic and organometallic chemistry, catalysis, materials science, biochemistry, and mineralogy where observed changes in performance or chemical properties of Mo-based compounds, accompanied by small changes in spectral shape, are to be related to the details of electronic structure and local atomic environment.

Atomic/molecular layer deposition of Ni-terephthalate thin films

Atomic/molecular layer deposition (ALD/MLD) is currently strongly emerging as an intriguing route for novel metal-organic thin-film materials. This approach already covers a variety of metal and organic components, and potential applications related to e.g. sustainable energy technologies. Among the 3d metal components, nickel has remained unexplored so far. Here we report a robust and efficient ALD/MLD process for the growth of high-quality nickel terephthalate thin films. The films are deposited from Ni(thd)₂ (thd: 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-3,5-heptanedionate) and terephthalic acid (1,4-benzenedicarboxylic acid) precursors in the temperature range of 180-280 °C, with appreciably high growth rates up to 2.3 Å per cycle at 200 °C. The films are amorphous but the local structure and chemical state of the films are addressed based on XRR, FTIR and RIXS techniques.

Temperature-Driven Self-Doping in Magnetite

Magnetite is one of the most fascinating materials exhibiting the enigmatic first-order Verwey transition which is conventionally manipulated through chemical doping. Here, we show that heating magnetite results in a spontaneous charge reordering and, consequently, a hole self-doping effect at the octahedral sublattice. Core-level x-ray spectroscopy measurements combined with theory uncovers that there are three regimes of self-doping that map the temperature dependence of the electrical conductivity and magnetism up to the Curie temperature. Our results provide an elegant analogy between the effect of chemical doping and temperature-driven self-doping on trimerons in magnetite.

Acute Toxicity of Divalent Mercury to Bacteria Explained by the Formation of Dicysteinate and Tetracysteinate Complexes Bound to Proteins in Escherichia coli and Bacillus subtilis

Bacteria are the most abundant organisms on Earth and also the major life form affected by mercury (Hg) poisoning in aquatic and terrestrial food webs. In this study, we applied high energy-resolution X-ray absorption near edge structure (HR-XANES) spectroscopy to bacteria with intracellular concentrations of Hg as low as 0.7 ng/mg (ppm) for identifying the intracellular molecular forms and trafficking pathways of Hg in bacteria at environmentally relevant concentrations. Gram-positive Bacillus subtilis and Gram-negative Escherichia coli were exposed to three Hg species: HgCl₂, Hg-dicysteinate (Hg(Cys)₂), and Hg-dithioglycolate (Hg(TGA)₂). In all cases, Hg was transformed into new two- and four-coordinate cysteinate complexes, interpreted to be bound, respectively, to the consensus metal-binding CXXC motif and zinc finger domains of proteins, with glutathione acting as a transfer ligand. Replacement of zinc cofactors essential to gene regulatory proteins with Hg would inhibit vital functions such as DNA transcription and repair and is suggested to be a main cause of Hg genotoxicity.

In Vivo Formation of HgSe Nanoparticles and Hg-Tetraselenolate Complex from Methylmercury in Seabirds-Implications for the Hg-Se Antagonism

In vivo and in vitro evidence for detoxification of methylmercury (MeHg) as insoluble mercury selenide (HgSe) underlies the central paradigm that mercury exposure is not or little hazardous when tissue Se is in molar excess (Se:Hg > 1). However, this hypothesis overlooks the binding of Hg to selenoproteins, which lowers the amount of bioavailable Se that acts as a detoxification reservoir for MeHg, thereby underestimating the toxicity of mercury. This question was addressed by determining the chemical forms of Hg in various tissues of giant petrels Macronectes spp. using a combination of high energy-resolution X-ray absorption near edge structure and extended X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy coupled to elemental mapping. Three main Hg species were identified, a MeHg-cysteinate complex, a four-coordinate selenocysteinate complex (Hg(Sec)₄), and a HgSe precipitate, together with a minor dicysteinate complex Hg(Cys)₂. The amount of HgSe decreases in the order liver > kidneys > brain = muscle, and the amount of Hg(Sec)₄ in the order muscle > kidneys > brain > liver. On the basis of biochemical considerations and structural modeling, we hypothesize that Hg(Sec)₄ is bound to the carboxy-terminus domain of selenoprotein P (SelP) which contains 12 Sec residues. Structural flexibility allows SelP to form multinuclear Hg_x(Se,Sec)_y complexes, which can be biomineralized to HgSe by protein self-assembly. Because Hg(Sec)₄ has a Se:Hg molar ratio of 4:1, this species severely depletes the stock of bioavailable Se for selenoprotein synthesis and activity to one μg Se/g dry wet in the muscle of several birds. This concentration is still relatively high because selenium is naturally abundant in seawater, therefore it probably does not fall below the metabolic need for essential selenium. However, this study shows that this may not be the case for terrestrial animals, and that muscle may be the first tissue potentially injured by Hg toxicity.

Demethylation of Methylmercury in Bird, Fish, and Earthworm

Toxicity of methylmercury (MeHg) to wildlife and humans results from its binding to cysteine residues of proteins, forming MeHg-cysteinate (MeHgCys) complexes that hinder biological functions. MeHgCys complexes can be detoxified in vivo, yet how this occurs is unknown. We report that MeHgCys complexes are transformed into selenocysteinate [Hg(Sec)₄] complexes in multiple animals from two phyla (a waterbird, freshwater fish, and earthworms) sampled in different geographical areas and contaminated by different Hg sources. In addition, high energy-resolution X-ray absorption spectroscopy (HR-XANES) and chromatography-inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry of the waterbird liver support the binding of Hg(Sec)₄ to selenoprotein P and biomineralization of Hg(Sec)₄ to chemically inert nanoparticulate mercury selenide (HgSe). The results provide a foundation for understanding mercury detoxification in higher organisms and suggest that the identified MeHgCys to Hg(Sec)₄ demethylation pathway is common in nature.

The five-analyzer point-to-point scanning crystal spectrometer at ESRF ID26

X-ray emission spectroscopy in a point-to-point focusing geometry using instruments that employ more than one analyzer crystal poses challenges with respect to mechanical design and performance. This work discusses various options for positioning the components and provides the formulas for calculating their relative placement. Ray-tracing calculations were used to determine the geometrical contributions to the energy broadening including the source volume as given by the beam footprint on the sample. The alignment of the instrument is described and examples are given for the performance.

More than protection: the function of TiO2 interlayers in hematite functionalized Si photoanodes

Worldwide significant efforts are ongoing to develop devices that store solar energy as fuels. In one such approach, solar energy is absorbed by semiconductors and utilized directly by catalysts at their surfaces to split water into H2 and O2. To protect the semiconductors in these photo-electrochemical cells (PEC) from corrosion, frequently thin TiO2 interlayers are applied. Employing a well-performing photoanode comprised of 1-D n-Si microwires (MWs) covered with a mesoporous (mp) TiO2 interlayer fabricated by solution processing and functionalized with α-Fe2O3 nanorods, we studied here the function of this TiO2 interlayer by high-energy resolution fluorescence detected X-ray absorption near edge structure (HERFD-XANES) spectroscopy, along with X-ray emission spectroscopy (XES) and standard characterization techniques. Our data reveal that the TiO2 interlayer not only protects the n-Si MW surface from corrosion, but that it also acts as a template for the hydrothermal growth of α-Fe2O3 nanorods and improves the photocatalytic efficiency. We show that the latter effect correlates with the presence of stable oxygen vacancies at the interface between mp-TiO2 and α-Fe2O3, which act as electron traps and thereby substantially reduce the charge recombination rate at the hematite surface.

Damages Induced by Synchrotron Radiation-Based X-ray Microanalysis in Chrome Yellow Paints and Related Cr-Compounds: Assessment, Quantification, and Mitigation Strategies

Synchrotron radiation (SR)-based X-ray methods are powerful analytical tools for several purposes. They are widely used to probe the degradation mechanisms of inorganic artists' pigments in paintings, including chrome yellows (PbCr_1-xS_xO₄; 0 ≤ x ≤ 0.8), a class of compounds often found in Van Gogh masterpieces. However, the high intensity and brightness of SR beams raise important issues regarding the potential damage inflicted on the analyzed samples. A thorough knowledge of the SR X-ray sensitivity of each class of pigment in the painting matrix is therefore required to find analytical strategies that seek to minimize the damage for preserving the integrity of the analyzed samples and to avoid data misinterpretation. Here, we employ a combination of Cr K-edge X-ray absorption near-edge structure spectroscopy, Cr-K_β X-ray emission spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction to monitor and quantify the effects of SR X-rays on the stability of chrome yellows and related Cr compounds and to define mitigation strategies. We found that the SR X-ray beam exposure induces changes in the oxidation state and local coordination environment of Cr ions and leads to a loss of the compound's crystalline structure. The extent of X-ray damage depends on some intrinsic properties of the samples (chemical composition of the pigment and the presence/absence and nature of the binder). It can be minimized by optimizing the overall fluence/dose released to the samples and by working in vacuum and under cryogenic conditions.

Chemical Sensitivity of Kβ and Kα X-ray Emission from a Systematic Investigation of Iron Compounds

K-fluorescence X-ray emission spectroscopy (XES) is receiving growing interest in all fields of natural sciences to investigate the local spin. The spin sensitivity in Kβ (Kα) XES stems from the exchange interaction between the unpaired 3p (2p) and the 3d electrons, which is greater for Kβ than for Kα. We present a thorough investigation of a large number of iron-bearing compounds. The experimental spectra were analyzed in terms of commonly used quantitative parameters (Kβ_1,3-first moment, Kα₁-full width at half-maximum, and integrated absolute difference -IAD-), and we carefully examined the difference spectra. Multiplet calculations were also performed to elucidate the underlying mechanisms that lead to the chemical sensitivity. Our results confirm a strong influence of covalency on both Kβ and Kα lines. We establish a reliable spin sensitivity of Kβ XES as it is dominated by the exchange interaction, whose variations can be quantified by either Kβ_1,3-first moment or Kβ-IAD and result in a systematic difference signal line shape. We find an exception in the Kβ XES of Fe³⁺ and Fe²⁺ in water solution, where a new difference spectrum is identified that cannot be reproduced by scaling the exchange integrals. We explain this by strong differences in orbital mixing between the valence orbitals. This result calls for caution in the interpretation of Kβ XES spectral changes as due to spin variations without a careful analysis of the line shape. For Kα XES, the smaller exchange interaction and the influence of other electron-electron interactions make it difficult to extract a quantity that directly relates to the spin.

New reflections on hard X-ray photon-in/photon-out spectroscopy

Analysis of the electronic structure and local coordination of an element is an important aspect in the study of the chemical and physical properties of materials. This is particularly relevant at the nanoscale where new phases of matter may emerge below a critical size. X-ray emission spectroscopy (XES) at synchrotron radiation sources and free electron lasers has enriched the field of X-ray spectroscopy. The spectroscopic techniques derived from the combination of X-ray absorption and emission spectroscopy (XAS-XES), such as resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) and high energy resolution fluorescence detected (HERFD) XAS, are an ideal tool for the study of nanomaterials. New installations and beamline upgrades now often include wavelength dispersive instruments for the analysis of the emitted X-rays. With the growing use of XAS-XES, scientists are learning about the possibilities and pitfalls. We discuss some experimental aspects, assess the feasibility of measuring weak fluorescence lines in dilute, radiation sensitive samples, and present new experimental approaches for studying magnetic properties of colloidal nanoparticles directly in the liquid phase.

Identification of Dy^{3+}/Dy^{2+} as Electron Trap in Persistent Phosphors

Laser excitation and x-ray spectroscopy are combined to settle a long-standing question in persistent luminescence. A reversible electron transfer is demonstrated, controlled by light and showing the same kinetics as the persistent luminescence. Exposure to violet light induces charging by oxidation of the excited Eu^{2+} while Dy^{3+} is simultaneously reduced. Oppositely, detrapping of Dy^{2+} occurs at ambient temperature or by infrared illumination, yielding afterglow or optically stimulated luminescence, respectively.

TEXS: in-vacuum tender X-ray emission spectrometer with 11 Johansson crystal analyzers

The design and first results of a large-solid-angle X-ray emission spectrometer that is optimized for energies between 1.5 keV and 5.5 keV are presented. The spectrometer is based on an array of 11 cylindrically bent Johansson crystal analyzers arranged in a non-dispersive Rowland circle geometry. The smallest achievable energy bandwidth is smaller than the core hole lifetime broadening of the absorption edges in this energy range. Energy scanning is achieved using an innovative design, maintaining the Rowland circle conditions for all crystals with only four motor motions. The entire spectrometer is encased in a high-vacuum chamber that allocates a liquid helium cryostat and provides sufficient space for in situ cells and operando catalysis reactors.

HERFD-XANES probes of electronic structures of ironII/III carbene complexes

Iron centered N-heterocyclic carbene (Fe-NHC) complexes have shown long-lived excited states with charge transfer character useful for light harvesting applications. Understanding the nature of the metal-ligand bond is of fundamental importance to rationally tailor the properties of transition metal complexes. The high-energy-resolution fluorescence detected X-ray absorption near edge structure (HERFD-XANES) has been used to probe the valence orbitals of three carbene complexes, [Fe^II(bpy)(btz)₂](PF₆)₂ (bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine, btz = 3,3'-dimethyl-1,1'-bis(p-tolyl)-4,4'-bis(1,2,3-triazol-5-ylidene)), [Fe^III(btz)₃](PF₆)₃, and [Fe^III(phtmeimb)₂]PF₆ (phtmeimb = [phenyl(tris(3-methylimidazol-2-ylidene))borate]^-). The multiconfigurational restrict active space (RAS) approach has been used to simulate the metal K pre-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy of these carbene complexes, and have reproduced the metal K pre-edge spectral features in terms of relative intensity and peak positions. The evident intensity difference between the Fe^II and the other two Fe^III complexes has been elucidated with different intensity mechanisms in the transition. The smaller splitting between the t_2g and e_g character peak for [Fe^III(btz)₃](PF₆)₃ has been observed in the experimental measurements and been reproduced in the RAS calculations. The results show how the combination of experimental HERFD-XANES measurements and ab initio RAS simulations can give quantitative evaluation of the orbital interactions between metal and ligands for such large and strongly interacting systems and thus allow to understand and predict properties of novel complexes.

Unravelling the Different Reaction Pathways for Low Temperature CO Oxidation on Pt/CeO2 and Pt/Al2O3 by Spatially Resolved Structure-Activity Correlations

Spatially resolved operando HERFD-XANES (high energy resolution fluorescence detected X-ray absorption near edge structure) complemented by CO concentration gradient profiles along the catalyst bed (SpaciPro) was used to identify the dominant reaction paths for the low and high temperature CO oxidation on Pt/CeO₂ and Pt/Al₂O₃. At low temperatures, features associated with CO adsorption on Pt were found for both catalysts. During the oxidation reaction light-off, the evolution of the spectral and catalytic profile diverged along the catalyst bed. The CO oxidation rate was high on Pt/CeO₂ from the beginning of the catalyst bed with CO being adsorbed on Pt, whereas low CO conversion due to strong CO poisoning was found on Pt/Al₂O₃. This correlation of the CO concentration gradient with unique insight by HERFD-XANES gave direct proof of the crucial contribution of the Pt-CeO₂ perimeter sites overcoming the CO self-inhibition effect at low temperatures.

Noncollinear Ordering of the Orbital Magnetic Moments in Magnetite

The magnitude of the orbital magnetic moment and its role as a trigger of the Verwey transition in the prototypical Mott insulator, magnetite, remain contentious. Using 1s2p resonant inelastic x-ray scattering angle distribution (RIXS-AD), we prove the existence of noncollinear orbital magnetic ordering and infer the presence of dynamical distortion creating a polaronic precursor for the metal to insulator transition. These conclusions are based on a subtle angular shift of the RIXS-AD spectral intensity as a function of the magnetic field orientation. Theoretical simulations show that these results are only consistent with noncollinear magnetic orbital ordering. To further support these claims we perform Fe K-edge x-ray magnetic circular dichroism in order to quantify the Fe average orbital magnetic moment.

Divalent Mercury in Dissolved Organic Matter Is Bioavailable to Fish and Accumulates as Dithiolate and Tetrathiolate Complexes

The freshwater cyprinid Tanichthys albonubes was used to assess the bioavailability of divalent mercury (Hg(II)) complexed in dissolved organic matter (DOM) to fish. The fish acquired 0.3 to 2.2 μg Hg/g dry weight after 8 weeks in aquaria containing DOM from a Carex peat with complexed mercury at initial concentrations of 14 nM to 724 nM. Changes in the relative proportions of dithiolate Hg(SR)₂ and nanoparticulate β-HgS in the DOM, as quantified by high energy-resolution XANES (HR-XANES) spectroscopy, indicate that Hg(SR)₂ complexes either produced by microbially induced dissolution of nanoparticulate β-HgS in the DOM or present in the original DOM were the forms of mercury that entered the fish. In the fish with 2.2 μg Hg/g, 84 ± 8% of Hg(II) was bonded to two axial thiolate ligands and one or two equatorial N/O electron donors (Hg[(SR)₂+(N/O)_1-2] coordination), and 16% had a Hg(SR)₄ coordination, as determined by HR-XANES. For comparison, fish exposed to Hg²⁺ from 40 nM HgCl₂ contained 10.4 μg Hg/g in the forms of dithiolate (20 ± 10%) and tetrathiolate (23 ± 10%) complexes, and also Hg _xS _y clusters (57 ± 15%) having a β-HgS-type local structure and a dimension that exceeded the size of metallothionein clusters. There was no evidence of methylmercury in the fish or DOM within the 10% uncertainty of the HR-XANES. Together, the results indicate that inorganic Hg(II) bound to DOM is a source of mercury to biota with dithiolate Hg(SR)₂ complexes as the immediate species bioavailable to fish, and that these complexes transform in response to cellular processes.

A microstructured p-Si photocathode outcompetes Pt as a counter electrode to hematite in photoelectrochemical water splitting

Herein, we communicate about an Earth-abundant semiconductor photocathode (p-Si/TiO2/NiOx) as an alternative for the rare and expensive Pt as a counter electrode for overall photoelectrochemical water splitting. The proposed photoelectrochemical (PEC) water-splitting device mimics the "Z"-scheme observed in natural photosynthesis by combining two photoelectrodes in a parallel-illumination mode. A nearly 60% increase in the photocurrent density (Jph) for pristine α-Fe2O3 and a 77% increase in the applied bias photocurrent efficiency (ABPE) were achieved by replacing the conventionally used Pt cathode with an efficient, cost effective p-Si/TiO2/NiOx photocathode under parallel illumination. The resulting photocurrent density of 1.26 mA cm-2 at 1.23VRHE represents a new record performance for hydrothermally grown pristine α-Fe2O3 nanorod photoanodes in combination with a photocathode, which opens the prospect for further improvement by doping α-Fe2O3 or by its decoration with co-catalysts. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements suggest that this significant performance increase is due to the enhancement of the space-charge field in α-Fe2O3.

Mercury(II) Binding to Metallothionein in Mytilus edulis revealed by High Energy-Resolution XANES Spectroscopy

Of all divalent metals, mercury (Hg^II) has the highest affinity for metallothioneins. Hg^II is considered to be enclosed in the α and β domains as tetrahedral α‐type Hg₄Cys_11‐12 and β‐type Hg₃Cys₉ clusters similar to Cd^II and Zn^II. However, neither the four‐fold coordination of Hg nor the existence of Hg–Hg atomic pairs have ever been demonstrated, and the Hg^II partitioning among the two protein domains is unknown. Using high energy‐resolution XANES spectroscopy, MP2 geometry optimization, and biochemical analysis, evidence for the coexistence of two‐coordinate Hg‐thiolate complex and four‐coordinate Hg‐thiolate cluster with a metacinnabar‐type (β‐HgS) structure in the α domain of separate metallothionein molecules from blue mussel under in vivo exposure is provided. The findings suggest that the CXXC claw setting of thiolate donors, which only exists in the α domain, acts as a nucleation center for the polynuclear complex and that the five CXC motifs from this domain serve as the cluster‐forming motifs. Oligomerization is driven by metallophilic Hg⋅⋅⋅Hg interactions. Our results provide clues as to why Hg has higher affinity for the α than the β domain. More generally, this work provides a foundation for understanding how metallothioneins mediate mercury detoxification in the cell under in vivo conditions.

Single Au Atom Doping of Silver Nanoclusters

Ag₂₉ nanoclusters capped with lipoic acid (LA) can be doped with Au. The doped clusters show enhanced stability and increased luminescence efficiency. We attribute the higher quantum yield to an increase in the rate of radiative decay. With mass spectrometry, the Au-doped clusters were found to consist predominantly of Au₁Ag₂₈(LA)₁₂^3-. The clusters were characterized using X-ray absorption spectroscopy at the Au L₃-edge. Both the extended absorption fine structure (EXAFS) and the near edge structure (XANES) in combination with electronic structure calculations confirm that the Au dopant is preferentially located in the center of the cluster. A useful XANES spectrum can be recorded for lower concentrations, or in shorter time, than the more commonly used EXAFS. This makes XANES a valuable tool for structural characterization.

Insights into the Synthesis Mechanism of Ag29 Nanoclusters

The current understanding of the synthesis mechanisms of noble metal clusters is limited, in particular for Ag clusters. Here, we present a detailed investigation into the synthesis process of atomically monodisperse Ag₂₉ clusters, prepared via reduction of AgNO₃ in the presence of dithiolate ligands. Using optical spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, and X-ray spectroscopy, it was determined that the synthesis involves a rapid nucleation and growth to species with up to a few hundred Ag atoms. From these larger species, Ag₂₉ clusters are formed and their concentration increases steadily over time. Oxygen plays an important role in the etching of large particles to Ag₂₉. No other stable Ag cluster species are observed at any point during the synthesis.

Synergistic interplay of Zn and Rh-Cr promoters on Ga2O3 based photocatalysts for water splitting

The photocatalytic water splitting activity of a wide-bandgap material, Ga2O3, is greatly boosted with the addition of a Zn and Rh-Cr co-catalyst at optimum loadings. To date, however, the exact roles of the co-catalysts and particularly the origin of their synergistic functions have not been clarified. Herein, we present how the optimum Zn loading on Ga2O3 leads to creation of a ZnGa2O4/Ga2O3 heterojunction favorable for charge separation through information on the occupied and unoccupied electronic states of Zn and Ga elucidated by X-ray absorption and emission spectroscopic methods. The function of Rh-Cr as an electron sink and reduction site was proven by photocatalytic experiments using an electron scavenger (Ag+) and by learning where Ag deposits and its effects on photocatalytic activity. Finally, perturbation of the Zn electronic structure by photoactivation was evidenced by modulation excitation X-ray absorption spectroscopy. Importantly, Rh-Cr markedly enhanced the level of the perturbation, serving as proof of the direct communication and synergy between the electronic states of Zn, present in ZnGa2O4, and Rh-Cr deposited on Ga2O3.

Chemical Forms of Mercury in Pyrite: Implications for Predicting Mercury Releases in Acid Mine Drainage Settings

Pyrite (cubic FeS₂) is the most abundant metal sulfide in nature and also the main host mineral of toxic mercury (Hg). Release of mercury in acid mine drainage resulting from the oxidative dissolution of pyrite in coal and ore and rock resulting from mining, processing, waste management, reclamation, and large construction activities is an ongoing environmental challenge. The fate of mercury depends on its chemical forms at the point source, which in turn depends on how it occurs in pyrite. Here, we show that pyrite in coal, sedimentary rocks, and hydrothermal ore deposits can host varying structural forms of Hg which can be identified with high energy-resolution XANES (HR-XANES) spectroscopy. Nominally divalent Hg is incorporated at the Fe site in pyrite from coal and at a marcasite-type Fe site in pyrite from sedimentary rocks. Distinction of the two Hg bonding environments offers a mean to detect microscopic marcasite inclusions (orthorhombic FeS₂) in bulk pyrite. In epigenetic pyrite from Carlin-type Au deposit, up to 55 ± 6 at. % of the total Hg occurs as metacinnabar nanoparticles (β-HgS_NP), with the remainder being substitutional at the Fe site. Pyritic mercury from Idrija-type Hg deposit (α-HgS ore) is partly divalent and substitutional and partly reduced into elemental form (liquid). Divalent mercury ions, mercury sulfide nanoparticles, and elemental mercury released by the oxidation of pyrite in acid mine drainage settings would have different environmental pathways. Our results could find important applications for designing control strategies of mercury released to land and water in mine-impacted watersheds.

Improving the quality of XAFS data

Following the Q2XAFS Workshop and Satellite to IUCr Congress 2017 on `Data Acquisition, Treatment, Storage - quality assurance in XAFS spectroscopy', a summary is given of the discussion on different aspects of a XAFS experiment that affect data quality. Some pertinent problems ranging from sources and minimization of noise to harmonic contamination and uncompensated monochromator glitches were addressed. Also, an overview is given of the major limitations and pitfalls of a selection of related methods, such as photon-out spectroscopies and energy-dispersive XAFS, and of increasingly common applications, namely studies at high pressure, and time-resolved investigations of catalysts in operando. Advice on how to avoid or deal with these problems and a few good practice recommendations are reported, including how to correctly report results.

Influence of the nature and environment of manganese in Mn-BEA zeolites on NO conversion in selective catalytic reduction with ammonia

Manganese-containing BEA zeolites, Mn_xSiBEA (x = 1-4 wt%) and Mn_(I.E.)AlBEA, were prepared by a two-step post-synthesis method and a conventional wet ion-exchange, respectively, and applied as catalysts in the selective catalytic reduction of NO with ammonia (NH₃-SCR). The physicochemical analysis of zeolite properties by high-energy-resolution fluorescence-detected XANES (HERFD-XANES) and X-ray emission spectroscopy (XES) uncovered that the coordination, geometry and oxidation state of Mn species are strongly related to the preparation method. Additionally, the study of catalyst acidity by FTIR spectroscopy with CO and pyridine probe molecules provided important insight into the number and type of acidic centres present on the catalyst surface. The catalytic results revealed that NO conversion depended on the state and content of Mn. The zeolites obtained by the two-step post-synthesis method and with a low Mn content were very active in the medium temperature range (NO conversion ∼100%) with simultaneous high selectivity to N₂ due to the presence of isolated, framework Mn(iii) and Mn(ii) species. The N₂O formation was especially high in the case of catalysts containing extra-framework polynuclear Mn species and negligible in the case of Mn_(I.E.)AlBEA containing predominantly isolated, extra-framework Mn(ii) species.

High energy-resolution x-ray spectroscopy at ultra-high dilution with spherically bent crystal analyzers of 0.5 m radius

We present the development, manufacturing, and performance of spherically bent crystal analyzers (SBCAs) of 100 mm diameter and 0.5 m bending radius. The elastic strain in the crystal wafer is partially released by a "strip-bent" method where the crystal wafer is cut into strips prior to the bending and the anodic bonding process. Compared to standard 1 m SBCAs, a gain in intensity is obtained without loss of energy resolution. The gain ranges between 2.5 and 4.5, depending on the experimental conditions and the width of the emission line measured. This reduces the acquisition times required to perform high energy-resolution x-ray absorption and emission spectroscopy on ultra-dilute species, accessing concentrations of the element of interest down to, or below, the ppm (ng/mg) level.

X-ray magnetic circular dichroism measured at the Fe K-edge with a reduced intrinsic broadening: x-ray absorption spectroscopy versus resonant inelastic x-ray scattering measurements

X-ray magnetic circular dichroism is measured at the Fe K pre-edge in yttrium iron garnet using two different procedures that allow reducing the intrinsic broadening due to the 1s corehole lifetime. First, deconvolution of XMCD data measured in total fluorescence yield (TFY) with an extremely high signal-to-noise ratio enables a factor of 2.4 to be gained in the XMCD intensity. Ligand field multiplet calculations performed with different values of intrinsic broadening show that deconvolving such high quality XMCD data is similar to reducing the lifetime broadening from a 1s corehole to a 2p corehole. Second, MCD is measured by resonant inelastic x-ray scattering spectroscopy as a function of incident energy and emission energy. Selection of a fixed emission energy, instead of using the TFY, allows enhancing the MCD intensity up to a factor of  ∼4.7. However, this significantly changes the spectral shape of the XMCD signal, which cannot be interpreted any more as an absorption spectrum.

Chemical Forms of Mercury in Human Hair Reveal Sources of Exposure

Humans are contaminated by mercury in different forms from different sources. In practice, contamination by methylmercury from fish consumption is assessed by measuring hair mercury concentration, whereas exposure to elemental and inorganic mercury from other sources is tested by analysis of blood or urine. Here, we show that diverse sources of hair mercury at concentrations as low as 0.5 ppm can be individually identified by specific coordination to C, N, and S ligands with high energy-resolution X-ray absorption spectroscopy. Methylmercury from seafood, ethylmercury used as a bactericide, inorganic mercury from dental amalgams, and exogenously derived atmospheric mercury bind in distinctive intermolecular configurations to hair proteins, as supported by molecular modeling. A mercury spike located by X-ray nanofluorescence on one hair strand could even be dated to removal of a single dental amalgam. Chemical forms of other known or putative toxic metals in human tissues could be identified by this approach with potential broader applications to forensic, energy, and materials science.

Molybdenum Speciation and its Impact on Catalytic Activity during Methane Dehydroaromatization in Zeolite ZSM-5 as Revealed by Operando X-Ray Methods

Combined high‐resolution fluorescence detection X‐ray absorption near‐edge spectroscopy, X‐ray diffraction, and X‐ray emission spectroscopy have been employed under operando conditions to obtain detailed new insight into the nature of the Mo species on zeolite ZSM‐5 during methane dehydroaromatization. The results show that isolated Mo–oxo species present after calcination are converted by CH₄ into metastable MoC_xO_y species, which are primarily responsible for C₂H_x/C₃H_x formation. Further carburization leads to MoC₃ clusters, whose presence coincides with benzene formation. Both sintering of MoC₃ and accumulation of large hydrocarbons on the external surface, evidenced by fluorescence‐lifetime imaging microscopy, are principally responsible for the decrease in catalytic performance. These results show the importance of controlling Mo speciation to achieve the desired product formation, which has important implications for realizing the impact of CH₄ as a source for platform chemicals.

The late transition metal mercury, known for its propensity to not share 5d electrons, actually does so in short-range π-bonding and medium- to long-range π-interactions.

High-energy resolution X-ray absorption and emission spectroscopy reveals insight into unique selectivity of La-based nanoparticles for CO₂

The lanthanum-based materials, due to their layered structure and f-electron configuration, are relevant for electrochemical application. Particularly, La2O2CO3 shows a prominent chemoresistive response to CO2. However, surprisingly less is known about its atomic and electronic structure and electrochemically significant sites and therefore, its structure-functions relationships have yet to be established. Here we determine the position of the different constituents within the unit cell of monoclinic La2O2CO3 and use this information to interpret in situ high-energy resolution fluorescence-detected (HERFD) X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) and valence-to-core X-ray emission spectroscopy (vtc XES). Compared with La(OH)3 or previously known hexagonal La2O2CO3 structures, La in the monoclinic unit cell has a much lower number of neighboring oxygen atoms, which is manifested in the whiteline broadening in XANES spectra. Such a superior sensitivity to subtle changes is given by HERFD method, which is essential for in situ studying of the interaction with CO2. Here, we study La2O2CO3-based sensors in real operando conditions at 250 °C in the presence of oxygen and water vapors. We identify that the distribution of unoccupied La d-states and occupied O p- and La d-states changes during CO2 chemoresistive sensing of La2O2CO3. The correlation between these spectroscopic findings with electrical resistance measurements leads to a more comprehensive understanding of the selective adsorption at La site and may enable the design of new materials for CO2 electrochemical applications.

Formation of Mercury Sulfide from Hg(II)-Thiolate Complexes in Natural Organic Matter

Methylmercury is the environmental form of neurotoxic mercury that is biomagnified in the food chain. Methylation rates are reduced when the metal is sequestered in crystalline mercury sulfides or bound to thiol groups in macromolecular natural organic matter. Mercury sulfide minerals are known to nucleate in anoxic zones, by reaction of the thiol-bound mercury with biogenic sulfide, but not in oxic environments. We present experimental evidence that mercury sulfide forms from thiol-bound mercury alone in aqueous dark systems in contact with air. The maximum amount of nanoparticulate mercury sulfide relative to thiol-bound mercury obtained by reacting dissolved mercury and soil organic matter matches that detected in the organic horizon of a contaminated soil situated downstream from Oak Ridge, TN, in the United States. The nearly identical ratios of the two forms of mercury in field and experimental systems suggest a common reaction mechanism for nucleating the mineral. We identified a chemical reaction mechanism that is thermodynamically favorable in which thiol-bound mercury polymerizes to mercury-sulfur clusters. The clusters form by elimination of sulfur from the thiol complexes via breaking of mercury-sulfur bonds as in an alkylation reaction. Addition of sulfide is not required. This nucleation mechanism provides one explanation for how mercury may be immobilized, and eventually sequestered, in oxygenated surface environments.

Spatial imaging of carbon reactivity centers in Pd/C catalytic systems

Gaining insight into Pd/C catalytic systems aimed at locating reactive centers on carbon surfaces, revealing their properties and estimating the number of reactive centers presents a challenging problem. In the present study state-of-the-art experimental techniques involving ultra high resolution SEM/STEM microscopy (1 Å resolution), high brilliance X-ray absorption spectroscopy and theoretical calculations on truly nanoscale systems were utilized to reveal the role of carbon centers in the formation and nature of Pd/C catalytic materials. Generation of Pd clusters in solution from the easily available Pd2dba3 precursor and the unique reactivity of the Pd clusters opened an excellent opportunity to develop an efficient procedure for the imaging of a carbon surface. Defect sites and reactivity centers of a carbon surface were mapped in three-dimensional space with high resolution and excellent contrast using a user-friendly nanoscale imaging procedure. The proposed imaging approach takes advantage of the specific interactions of reactive carbon centers with Pd clusters, which allows spatial information about chemical reactivity across the Pd/C system to be obtained using a microscopy technique. Mapping the reactivity centers with Pd markers provided unique information about the reactivity of the graphene layers and showed that >2000 reactive centers can be located per 1 μm2 of the surface area of the carbon material. A computational study at a PBE-D3-GPW level differentiated the relative affinity of the Pd2 species to the reactive centers of graphene. These findings emphasized the spatial complexity of the carbon material at the nanoscale and indicated the importance of the surface defect nature, which exhibited substantial gradients and variations across the surface area. The findings show the crucial role of the structure of the carbon support, which governs the formation of Pd/C systems and their catalytic activity.

Detailed Characterization of a Nanosecond-Lived Excited State: X-ray and Theoretical Investigation of the Quintet State in Photoexcited [Fe(terpy)2]2

Theoretical predictions show that depending on the populations of the Fe 3d _xy , 3d _xz , and 3d _yz orbitals two possible quintet states can exist for the high-spin state of the photoswitchable model system [Fe(terpy)₂]²⁺. The differences in the structure and molecular properties of these ⁵B₂ and ⁵E quintets are very small and pose a substantial challenge for experiments to resolve them. Yet for a better understanding of the physics of this system, which can lead to the design of novel molecules with enhanced photoswitching performance, it is vital to determine which high-spin state is reached in the transitions that follow the light excitation. The quintet state can be prepared with a short laser pulse and can be studied with cutting-edge time-resolved X-ray techniques. Here we report on the application of an extended set of X-ray spectroscopy and scattering techniques applied to investigate the quintet state of [Fe(terpy)₂]²⁺ 80 ps after light excitation. High-quality X-ray absorption, nonresonant emission, and resonant emission spectra as well as X-ray diffuse scattering data clearly reflect the formation of the high-spin state of the [Fe(terpy)₂]²⁺ molecule; moreover, extended X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy resolves the Fe-ligand bond-length variations with unprecedented bond-length accuracy in time-resolved experiments. With ab initio calculations we determine why, in contrast to most related systems, one configurational mode is insufficient for the description of the low-spin (LS)-high-spin (HS) transition. We identify the electronic structure origin of the differences between the two possible quintet modes, and finally, we unambiguously identify the formed quintet state as ⁵E, in agreement with our theoretical expectations.
