Summary of the proceedings of the International Forum 2021: “A more visible radiologist can never be replaced by AI”

The ESR International Forum at the ECR 2021 discussed effects of artificial intelligence on the future of radiology and the need for increased visibility of radiologists. The participating societies were invited to submit written reports detailing the current situation in their country or region. The European Society of Radiology (ESR) established the ESR International Forum in order to discuss hot topics in the profession of radiology with non-European radiological partner societies. At the ESR International Forum 2021, different strategies, initiatives and ideas were presented with regard to radiology community’s response to the changes caused by the emerging AI technology.

Combined pituitary hormone deficiency and PROP-1 mutation in two siblings: a distinct MR imaging pattern of pituitary enlargement

Mutations of the PROP-1 gene are the most frequent genetic defect in patients with combined pituitary hormone insufficiency. We present the cases of 2 siblings with PROP-1 mutations whom we observed longitudinally. Their initial pituitary MR imaging examinations showed identical findings: an enlarged adenohypophysis, with striking hypointensity on T2-weighted images and slight hyperintensity on T1-weighted images. In one of the children, the follow-up MR imaging obtained 3 years after hormonal replacement revealed a decrease in the size of the anterior pituitary lobe.

Diffusion-weighted MRI in two cases of familial Creutzfeldt--Jakob disease

Diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (DWI) has been described as a useful tool for the diagnosis of sporadic Creutzfeldt--Jakob disease (CJD). To our knowledge, DWI abnormalities have not previously been reported in familial CJD. In two patients with familial CJD associated with distinct mutations at codon 183 and at codon 210 of the prion protein gene, DWI showed a high signal in the basal ganglia and in the cerebral cortex. These abnormalities are similar to those described in sporadic CJD. This observation expands the value of DWI for the diagnosis of some forms of familial CJD. It remains to be investigated whether this finding also holds for CJD associated with other mutations of the prion protein gene.

Prevalence of multiple sclerosis in the city of São Paulo, Brazil, in 1990

A case register of multiple sclerosis (MS) was set up in the city of São Paulo, Brazil, situated at a latitude of 23-24 degrees south. Cases were notified by neurologists, neuroradiologists and by an association of patients with MS. Prevalence rate was 4.27 x 10(-5) (men: 2.89 x 10(-5); women: 5.59 x 10(-5)), with a preponderance of young adults. We discuss here whether these rates are artifact due to poor health care facilities, to poor notification and deficiencies in diagnosis, or whether these rates are really low.
