Abstract
AIMS This paper investigates the diversity of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH)-degrading mycobacterium isolates from three different sites within United States: Montana, Texas and Indiana. METHODS AND RESULTS All five mycobacterium isolates differed in chromosomal restriction enzyme-fragmentation patterns; three isolates possessed linear plasmids. The DNA sequence between the murA and rRNA genes were divergent but the sequence upstream of nidBA genes, encoding a dioxygenase involved in pyrene oxidation, was more highly conserved. Long-chain fatty acid analysis showed most similarity between three isolates from the same Montana site. All isolates were sensitive to rifampicin and isoniazid, used in tuberculosis treatment, and to syringopeptins, produced by plant-associated pseudomonads. Biofilm growth was least for isolate MCS that grew on plate medium as rough-edged colonies. The patterns of substrate utilization in Biolog plates showed clustering of the Montana isolates compared with Mycobacterium vanbaalenii and Mycobacterium gilvum. CONCLUSION The five PAH-degrading mycobacterium isolates studied differ in genetic and biochemical properties. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY Different properties with respect to antibiotic susceptibility, substrate utilization and biofilm formation could influence the survival in soil of the microbe and their suitability for use in bioaugmentation.

Abstract
To determine whether the soil Mycobacterium isolate KMS would mineralize pyrene under rhizosphere conditions, a microcosm system was established to collect radioactive carbon dioxide released from the labeled polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon. Microcosms were designed as sealed, flow-through systems that allowed the growth of plants. Experiments were conducted to evaluate mineralization of 14C-labeled pyrene in a sand amended with the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons degrading Mycobacterium isolate KMS, barley plants, or barley plants with roots colonized by isolate KMS. Mineralization was quantified by collecting the 14CO2 produced from 14C-labeled pyrene at intervals during the 10-d incubation period. Roots and foliar tissues were examined for 14C incorporation. Mass balances for microcosms were determined through combustion of sand samples and collection and quantification of 14CO2 evolved from radiolabeled pyrene. No pyrene mineralization was observed in the sterile control systems. Greater release of 14CO2 was observed in the system with barley colonized by KMS than in microcosms containing just the bacterium inoculum or sterile barley plants. These findings suggest that phytostimulation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons mineralization could be applied in remediation schemes.

Abstract
Five environmental mycobacterium isolates that degrade polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were associated with barley root surfaces after growth of the seedlings from inoculated seed. Mycobacterium cells were detected along the total root length for four of these isolates. These PAH-degrading mycobacterium strains had hydrophilic cell surfaces, whereas one strain, MCS, that was hydrophobic had reduced association along the root length with no cells being detected from the root tips. The root-tip-competent strain, KMS, was competitive for its root association in the presence of the root-colonizing pseudomonad, Pseudomonas putida KT2440. All mycobacterium strains utilized simple sugars (fructose, glucose) and the trisaccharide 6-kestose, present in barley root washes, for planktonic growth, but they differed in their potential for biofilm formation under in vitro conditions. Mineralization of pyrene by the KMS strain occurred when the components in the barley root wash were amended with labeled pyrene suggesting to us that mineralization could occur in plant rhizospheres containing such mycobacterium strains.

Seroprevalence of and risk factors for HIV-1 infection among female commercial sex workers in South America. Sex Transm Infect 2006; 82:311-6. Abstract
OBJECTIVE Assessment of HIV prevalence and associated risk behaviours among female commercial sex workers (FCSW) across major cities in South America. METHODS Seroepidemiological, cross sectional studies of 13 600 FCSW were conducted in nine countries of South America during the years 1999-2002. Participants were recruited in brothels, massage parlours, hotels, and streets where anonymous questionnaires and blood samples were collected. HIV infection was determined by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) screening and western blot confirmatory tests. RESULTS The overall HIV seroprevalence was 1.2% (range 0.0%-4.5%). The highest HIV seroprevalences were reported in Argentina (4.5%) and Paraguay (2.6%); no HIV infected FCSW were detected in Venezuela and Chile. Consistent predictors of HIV seropositivity were: (1) a previous history of sexually transmitted infections (STI, AORs = 3.8-8.3), and (2) 10 years or more in commercial sex work (AORs = 2.2-24.8). In addition, multiple (> or =3) sexual contacts (AOR = 5.0), sex with foreigners (AOR = 6.9), use of illegal drugs (AOR = 3.2), and marijuana use (AOR = 8.2) were associated with HIV seropositivity in Southern Cone countries. CONCLUSIONS Consistently low HIV seroprevalences were detected among FCSW in South America, particularly in the Andean region. Predictors of HIV infection across the continent were STI and length of commercial sex work; however, use of illegal drugs, especially marijuana, and sexual contacts with foreigners were also found to be associated risk factors in the Southern Cone region. Interventions for the control of HIV and other STI need to be region and country specific; drug use appears to have an ever increasing role in the spread of HIV among heterosexually active populations.

Abstract
Polygalacturonases represent the most abundant carbohydrate hydrolase family in the Arabidopsis thaliana genome, and they are thought to be involved in nearly all of the developmental processes requiring cell wall modifications during the life cycle of the plant. By phylogenetic analysis, plant polygalacturonases fall into at least three groups, one of which is distinguished from the others by the presence of an additional N-terminal domain. We have used RDPG1, the polygalacturonase involved in pod dehiscence in oilseed rape (Brassica napus), as a model to investigate the function of this domain. We have confirmed that this domain is absent in the mature protein by determination of the N-terminal sequence of mature RDPG1 purified from oilseed rape pod. We have furthermore investigated the accumulation and subcellular localization of the precursor containing the N-terminal domain and of the mature protein throughout the development and maturation of the pod. Using recombinant expression in Pichia pastoris, we have produced the RDPG1 precursor, and we present evidence that the N-terminal domain of plant polygalacturonases is not involved in folding or inactivation of the precursor but may play a role in the intracellular transport of this protein family via a novel regulated secretion pathway.

Abstract
The oilseed rape (Brassica napus) endo-polygalacturonase (endo-PG) RDPG1 is involved in middle lamella breakdown during silique opening. We investigated tissue-specific expression of RDPG1 in transgenic Arabidopsis thaliana. Cellular localization of endo-PG protein in Arabidopsis siliques was determined by immuno-electron microscopy. An Arabidopsis orthologue, ADPG1, was isolated and aligned with the sequence of RDPG1. The proximal 5' sequences as well as introns are largely conserved. Analysis of the histological GUS-staining pattern of two RDPG1 promoter-GUS (beta-glucuronidase) constructs in transgenic Arabidopsis revealed that the conserved proximal part of the 5'-flanking region directs expression in dehiscence zones of siliques and anthers, floral abscission zones and stylar tissues during pollen tube growth, branch points between stems and pedicel and expression associated with the apical meristem of seedlings, while the distal part of the RDPG1 5'-flanking region contains elements involved in vascular-associated expression in petals, cotyledons and roots. Subsequent RT-PCR analysis, on RNA from the corresponding rape tissues, confirms the staining pattern revealed in transgenic Arabidopsis, thereby justifying the use of Arabidopsis as a reliable model system for analysis of oilseed rape regulatory sequences.

Abstract
In this report, the authors delineate the experience of Lakeland Regional Medical Center Inc. with redeployed services over the last 10 years. They provide a brief history of the restructuring, then focus on their experience with the management of redeployed services. In addition to the perspectives of the authors, they include information gathered through interviews with staff and managers in both the operating and business centers. The article concludes with a summary of the challenges and opportunities of managing a department with redeployed services and cross-trained staff.

Abstract
The risk of HIV from transfusions in Canada in the period 1980-85 was estimated, using the information from a transfused paediatric cohort. Children who were transfused between January 1980 and November 1985 at a tertiary care paediatric hospital were contacted by letter. With this notification, HIV testing for recipients was recommended. HIV testing histories were obtained. The number tested for HIV was estimated from the questionnaire responses and from data matching with the HIV-testing laboratory. Cases of HIV infection were identified through multiple sources. In this cohort, 11,028 children were transfused a mean of 21 units. Of the 10,220 living recipients, the estimated proportion tested for HIV was 86% to 91%. Thirty-one cases of HIV infection were identified, representing 0.28% of the cohort but 0.34% of those expected to have been tested. The estimated HIV incidence per 1,000 units transfused ranged from 0.028 [95% CI 0.0007, 0.155] in 1980 to 0.445 [95% CI 0.2592, 0.712] in 1985. This suggests that the risk of HIV from transfusions in Canada continued to rise until the implementation of HIV testing of donors in November 1985.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of exercising at the epinephrine threshold and at Maximum Power Output on the performance of a skill that requires both decision-making and motor performance. Participants (N=12) undertook an incremental test to exhaustion from which their epinephrine threshold and Maximum Power Output were calculated. They were then examined on a soccer skill test following rest and exercise that was previously determined to elicit their epi nephrine threshold and Maximum Power Output. The soccer test examined the participants' speed and accuracy of response. Speed of response was measured by voice reaction time and whole body reaction time. No significant effects of exercise were shown for any of the variables. The need for further research using more complex skill tests and the use of discontinuous exercise protocols, rather than continuous ones, is recommended.

Abstract
Plasma lactate and catecholamine thresholds were calculated using three different variations of linear regression, an algorithmic linear regression method, a log-log transformation method and a semi-log method. A group of 18 male sports science students undertook an incremental test to exhaustion on a cycle ergometer. A 5-ml blood sample was drawn at rest, after 4 min of exercise and every 2 min thereafter until the cessation of the test. Lactate, adrenaline and noradrenaline concentrations were measured. Lactate threshold (Th1a), adrenaline threshold (ThA) and noradrenaline threshold (ThNA) were calculated using each of the three methods. The best fits of the methods were examined by comparing their standard error of estimates (SEEs). The algorithmic method demonstrated a higher SEE than the other two methods, but only for Th1a and ThNA. The power output for which each method calculated the thresholds demonstrated a main effect for method. Tukey post hoc tests showed that the algorithmic method produced significantly higher outputs than the other two methods, which did not differ significantly from one another. Comparison of these power outputs showed that Th1a and ThA differed significantly, regardless of method, there were no other significant differences. Plasma concentrations of lactate, adrenaline and noradrenaline showed that the values of Th1a and ThNA calculated by the algorithmic method were significantly higher than those calculated using the other two methods, which did not differ significantly from one another. The only significant difference for ThA was between the algorithmic and semi-log methods. Correlations between the power outputs at which each method calculated the thresholds varied greatly between methods, and were at best only moderate (r = 0.63). It was concluded that the algorithmic method was less powerful than the other two methods, and that Th1a, ThA and ThNA are not highly correlated.

Abstract
This study compares participation rates and reasons for nonresponse in surveys conducted in five countries of Latin America and the Caribbean. The objective of the surveys was to measure the prevalence of risk behaviors affecting the transmission of human immunodeficiency virus. The surveys were based on probability samples of the population of both sexes between 15 and 49 years old, except in Mexico, where only men were included. Proportions of three components of participation were estimated: residences interviewed, interviewed residences with eligible persons, and eligible persons who completed the interview. In addition, an overall index that combined the three components was calculated. The overall response rate ranged from 35.6% in Mexico to 81.4% in Chile. The component with the greatest variability was the participation of eligible persons, which ranged from 50% in Mexico to 95% in Cuba. These values were lower than what had been expected, especially among men, and will serve to guide future surveys, since rejection rates higher than the ones expected in the protocol should be considered. The results make it possible to infer the validity of the prevalence estimates for the various observed risk behaviors. The results also establish a benchmark to calculate the sample size in future surveys and to improve research methodology.

Abstract
This study investigated the effects of chronic muscle inflammation on indices of antioxidant status and muscle injury after eccentric exercise. Eight subjects each performed 70 maximal voluntary eccentric muscle actions on an isokinetic dynamometer, using the knee extensors of a single leg. Venous blood samples were collected into serum and EDTA tubes 5 and 3 days before exercise, immediately before exercise, and then again on days 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 10 and 12 after the bout. Needle biopsies were taken from the vastus lateralis of six subjects, a week before exercise (baseline), and again on days 4 and 7 post-exercise. The concentrations of malondialdehyde in plasma and muscle were used as markers of lipid peroxidation. Creatine kinase activity, beta-glucuronidase activity and total antioxidant capacity were determined in serum. In muscle, aqueous and bound total antioxidant capacity, the aqueous sulphydryl concentration, and beta-glucuronidase and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase activity were determined. No changes were detected in serum total antioxidant capacity, serum creatine kinase and beta-glucuronidase after the baseline biopsy. After exercise serum creatine kinase and beta-glucuronidase were elevated although other serum measures were unchanged. In muscle, aqueous and bound total antioxidant capacity, sulphydryls, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase and beta-glucuronidase were all elevated. Despite evidence of inflammation in this study, muscle antioxidant status was not compromised, and malondialdehyde was unaltered in muscle and plasma. Therefore, this study provides no evidence that chronic muscle inflammation compromises antioxidant status or increases lipid peroxidation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Medical care of HIV infected and AIDS patients may represent an important economical burden for public hospitals. AIM To assess direct and indirect costs of medical care for HIV infected and AIDS patients in public hospitals of the Metropolitan Region of Chile. MATERIAL AND METHODS Between August 1994 and February 1995, information about outpatient and hospitalized medical care of 417 HIV infected patients was gathered (representing approximately 16% of the seropositive population). Patients were divided as having or not having AIDS. The latter were those included in groups I, II, III and category C2 of group C (group 4). The cost of medications, procedures and examinations of these patients was calculated. RESULTS Thirty six percent of studied patients had AIDS. The annual cost of care for AIDS patients was US$3760 compared to US$1450 for HIV infected patients without AIDS. Medications represented 75% and 65% of total costs in patients with and without AIDS respectively. The figures for examinations and procedures were 17% and 22% and for medical attentions were 7.5% and 8.8% respectively. CONCLUSIONS Medical care of patients with AIDS has higher costs than that of HIV infected patients without AIDS. Thus, the retardation of the progression of the disease would have social, humanitarian and economical benefits. Our costs are similar to those of other countries with a similar level of economic development.

Abstract
Serotonin (5-HT) is involved in a large variety of physiological functions and it appears now that it could play a role in cognitive processes through the activation of 5-HT4 receptors. The present study was conducted to determine the effect of BIMU1, a mixed 5-HT4 agonist/5-HT3 antagonist on social olfactory recognition in rats, a behaviour test which has previously been shown to access short-term memory and to be sensitive to cholinergic drugs. This test is based on the investigation of an unfamiliar juvenile by an adult rat during two distinct 5-min presentations. At a 30-min delay after each presentation adults recognized the juvenile, whereas after a 2-hr delay all the adults had forgotten it. When administered intraperitoneally immediately after the first presentation, BIMU1 (10 mg/kg) enhanced short-term memory (i.e. recognition of the juvenile after a 2-hr delay). Ondansetron (10 and 100 micrograms/kg injected intraperitoneally), a 5-HT3 antagonist, had no significant effect on this form of memory. The effect of BIMU1 was antagonized by intraperitoneal injection of GR 125487, a very selective and potent 5-HT4 antagonist. The antagonistic effect was obtained at 1 and 10 mg/kg of GR 125487, but not at 0.1 mg/kg. It is certainly a specific effect on brain 5-HT4 receptors, since we determined a brain concentration of GR 125487 equal to 3.8 x 10(-7) M after the intraperitoneal injection of 10 mg/kg of this drug. This GR 125487 concentration is certainly sufficient to occupy all the 5-HT4 brain receptors (Kd = 10(-10) M) but not to occupy 5-HT3 receptors (Kd > 10(-6) M). The 5-HT4 specificity of the blockade by GR 125487 is further demonstrated by the fact that a 10-fold lower dose of GR 125487 (1 mg/kg) is also effective to inhibit the BIMU1 effect.

Abstract
Seven distinct partial cDNAs, similar in sequence to previously described polygalacturonases (PGs), were amplified from cDNA derived from rape pod wall, dehiscence zone and leaves by the polymerase chain reaction. Northern analysis showed that one clone, PG35-8, was expressed at low levels in the dehiscence zone during the first five weeks after anthesis but was very abundantly expressed at week 6. In contrast, no PG35-8-related RNA was detected in the pod wall. Our data suggest that there are temporal and spatial correlations between the breakdown of the middle lamella, of the dehiscence zone cells and the pattern of synthesis of PG35-8 transcripts which may indicate a role for this particular PG in rape pod dehiscence. PG35-8 was used to isolate five cDNA clones from a rape dehiscence zone cDNA library. Restriction enzyme analysis and partial sequencing revealed that they were derived from four highly homologous transcripts which are probably allelic forms of a single gene. One full-length clone, RDPG1, was completely sequenced. The predicted protein of RDPG1 showed its highest identity with PG from apple fruit with an identity of 52%.

Abstract
Elf-1 is an Ets family transcription factor that regulates a number of inducible lymphoid-specific genes, including those encoding interleukin 3 (IL-3), granulocyte/macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF), and the IL-2 receptor (IL-2R) alpha chain. A minimal oligonucleotide spanning the IL-2R alpha Elf-1 site (-97/-84) bound Elf-1 poorly, but binding activity markedly increased when this oligonucleotide was multimerized or flanking sequences were added. This result is consistent with the requirement of accessory proteins for efficient Elf-1 binding, as has been demonstrated for the GM-CSF and IL-3 promoters. A binding site selection analysis revealed the optimal Elf-1 consensus motif to be A(A/t)(C/a)CCGGAAGT(A/S), which is similar to the consensus motif for the related Drosophila E74 protein. This minimal high affinity site could bind Elf-1 and functioned as a stronger transcription element than the -97/-84 IL-2R alpha oligonucleotide when cloned upstream of a heterologous promoter. In contrast, in the context of the IL-2R alpha promoter, conversion of the naturally occurring low affinity Elf-1 site to an optimal site decreased inducible activation of a reporter construct in Jurkat cells. This finding may be explained by the observation that another Ets family protein, ER GB/Fli-1, can efficiently bind only to the optimal site, and in this context, interferes with Elf-1 binding. Therefore, high affinity Elf-1 sites may lack sufficient binding specificity, whereas naturally occurring low affinity sites presumably favor the association of Elf-1 in the context of accessory proteins. These findings offer an explanation for the lack of optimal sites in any of the known Elf-1-regulated genes.

Abstract
Twenty-five consecutive patients being considered for surgery for intractable epilepsy had intracarotid sodium methohexital procedures (ISM) as part of their evaluation. The lipophilic brain SPECT agent, [99mTc]hexamethylpropylene aminoxime (HMPAO), was administered intravenously during the procedure to determine the intracerebral distribution of methohexital. The validity of the ISM depends on consistent delivery of the anesthetizing agent to one hemisphere, including the mesial structures of the temporal lobe. To prevent postoperative language and memory deficits, correct interpretation of the test results supposes a reliable knowledge of which regions of the brain have been anesthetized. Currently, no absolute criteria allow determination of the level and topographical extent of the anesthesia. We compared results of HMPAO-SPECT with clinical and EEG video-monitoring data and with results of digital subtraction angiography (DSA) performed during the test. In all patients, the effect of SM was ipsilateral cerebral hypoperfusion on SPECT and crossed cerebellar diaschisis. The distribution of HMPAO varied from patient to patient. The delivery of SM to mesial temporal lobe structures was not constant. Using nonparametric tests, we demonstrated a statistically significant relationship between hypoperfusion on SPECT and duration of hemiplegia but not with the duration of aphasia. Hypoperfusion on SPECT was also related to the onset and duration of drug-induced delta activity on EEG. SPECT showed a statistically different distribution of SM in the brain from that predicted with DSA. We present our experience with HMPAO-SPECT use for mapping the distribution of methohexital's effects during the ISM (Wada test). We confirm the results of previous studies that SPECT assessment may be an excellent way of determining the distribution of barbiturate during the examination. It increases confidence in interpreting results of speech and memory testing by detecting either contralateral diffusion of the drug due to crossflow between hemispheres or insufficient quantitative delivery to the homolateral hemisphere.

Abstract
The interleukin 2 receptor alpha-chain (IL-2R alpha) gene is rapidly and potently induced in T cells in response to mitogenic stimuli. Previously, an inducible enhancer between nucleotides -299 and -228 that contains NF-kappa B and CArG motifs was identified. We now report the characterization of a second essential positive regulatory element located between nucleotides -137 and -64 that binds Elf-1 and HMG-I(Y). This element had maximal activity in lymphoid cells, paralleling the cell type specificity of Elf-1 expression. Transcription from the IL-2R alpha promoter was inhibited when either the Elf-1 or the HMG-I(Y) binding site was mutated. Coexpression of both proteins activated transcription of the -137 to -64 element in COS-7 cells. Elf-1 physically associated with HMG-I and with NF-kappa B p50 and c-Rel in vitro, suggesting that protein-protein interactions might functionally coordinate the actions of the upstream and downstream positive regulatory elements. This is the first report of a physical interaction between an Ets family member and NF-kappa B family proteins. These findings provide significant new insights into the protein-protein and protein-DNA interactions that regulate cell-type-specific and inducible IL-2R alpha gene expression and also have implications for other genes regulated by Elf-1 and NF-kappa B family proteins.

Abstract
Aiming to study the applicability and reproducibility of four commercial kits used for the serological detection of Chagas disease (Chagatest-Inst Invest Paraguay, Ortho Chagas, Abbott Chagas (ELISA tests) and Estabilgen Hemo Chagas (indirect hemagglutination test)), a comparative serological study was performed in 256 sera samples coming from a highly endemic area, 249 samples from a low endemic area, 180 reference sera and 2264 samples coming from three blood banks. Specificity of the kits was excellent and sensitivity ranged from 60 to 100%. The indirect hemagglutination test has the lower sensitivity. Some disagreements in the results were observed in the three blood banks, probably due to an unsatisfactory reactive management. We conclude that ELISA tests should be recommended for routine detection of Chagas disease and that for this purpose, a net of laboratories under the direction of a national reference center should exist. This center should assess new commercial products, train technicians and supervise the laboratories.

Abstract
The prevalence of hepatitis C antibody was studied using the EIA 2 Abbott assay in patients and staff of the San Juan de Dios Hospital Hemodialysis Unit. The antibody was detected in 29.8% of patients, no member of the staff had positive antibodies. Patients with a positive antibody had been on hemodialysis for a longer time than those with a negative test (53.3 +/- 18.8 vs 37.9 +/- 33.5 months respectively). No differences in the number of transfusions received were observed between patients with positive or negative antibodies. Hepatitis B surface antigen was detected in 2 patients, with negative hepatitis C virus antibody. No clinical evidence of liver disease was found among patients with positive antibodies.

Abstract
Infection with T cruzi through blood transfusion is an important public health problem in Latin America, including Chile. A study on the sensitivity, specificity and applicability of currently applied methods was performed. Ten commercially available products were tested in a panel of 180 blood specimens against the indirect immunofluorescence antibody test (IFAT) and the immunoperoxidase test (IP). Qualitative concordance ranged from 82 to 98%, sensitivity from 64 to 97% and specificity from 93 to 100%. Some commercial products had a low performance and ELISA is recommended for routine use in Chilean blood banks, given its significantly higher sensitivity and specificity when compared to the hemagglutination test. In addition, experience with the use of the ELISA test is widespread in Chile.

Abstract
Internode extension in young, light-grown mustard plants was measured continuously to a high degree of resolution using linear voltage displacement transducers. Plants were grown in background white light (WL) and the first internode was irradiated with supplementary far-red (FR) from fibre-optic light guides, depressing the Pfr/P (ratio of FR-absorbing form of phytochrome to total spectrophotometrically assayable phytochrome) within the internode and causing an acceleration of extension rate. The internode was sensitive to periods of FR as brief as 1 min, with a sharp increase in extension rate occurring after the return to background WL only. The mean latent period of the response to FR was approx. 10 min. Periods of FR longer than approx. 35 min caused an apparently biphasic growth response, with an initial sharp acceleration in extension rate (Phase 1) being followed by a brief deceleration and a further acceleration to a more-or-less steady elevated rate, somewhat less than the first peak (Phase 2). With such longer-term FR, extension rate decelerated upon FR switch-off after a mean lag of approx. 6 min, achieving the prestimulation extension rate within 16 min. The magnitude of the FR-induced increase in extension rate, expressed as a percentage of the rate in WL alone, was an inverse, linear function of the phytochrome photoequilibrium (i.e. Pfr/P, measured in etiolated test material irradiated under the same geometry) over the range 0.17 to 0.63. This relationship was not significantly affected by variations in backround WL fluence rate over the range 50-150 μmol·m(-2)·s(-1) and was held both for Phase 1 and Phase 2 of the response. The data provide evidence for rapid coupling/uncoupling between phytochrome and its transduction chain in the light-grown plant and for fluence-rate compensation of the regulation of extension rate. The extensive linearity of the relationship between phytochrome photoequilibrium and proportional extension rate increment allows for fine tuning in shade avoidance. The results are discussed with respect to recent evidence on the nature of phytochrome in light-grown plants and in relation to the function of phytochrome in plants growing in the natural environment.

Abstract
In background white light, supplementary far-red (λmax 700 nm) is an order of magnitude less effective than supplementary far-red (λmax 739 nm) in the stimulation of stem extension in Sinapis alba. The relationship between phytochrome photoequilibrium and extension rate increase for the two supplementary far-red treatments is, however, very similar. This evidence indicates that phytochrome cycling is not involved in the phytochrome control of stem extension in light-grown Sinapis alba and that the response to supplementary far-red light is not fluence rate (irradiance) dependent.
