Abstract
Patella alta (PA) and patella baja (PB) affect 1-2% of the world population, but are often underreported, leading to potential complications like osteoarthritis. The Insall-Salvati ratio (ISR) is commonly used to diagnose patellar height abnormalities. Artificial intelligence (AI) keypoint models show promising accuracy in measuring and detecting these abnormalities.An AI keypoint model is developed and validated to study the Insall-Salvati ratio on a random population sample of lateral knee radiographs. A keypoint model was trained and internally validated with 689 lateral knee radiographs from five sites in a multi-hospital urban healthcare system after IRB approval. A total of 116 lateral knee radiographs from a sixth site were used for external validation. Distance error (mm), Pearson correlation, and Bland-Altman plots were used to evaluate model performance. On a random sample of 2647 different lateral knee radiographs, mean and standard deviation were used to calculate the normal distribution of ISR. A keypoint detection model had mean distance error of 2.57 ± 2.44 mm on internal validation data and 2.73 ± 2.86 mm on external validation data. Pearson correlation between labeled and predicted Insall-Salvati ratios was 0.82 [95% CI 0.76-0.86] on internal validation and 0.75 [0.66-0.82] on external validation. For the population sample of 2647 patients, there was mean ISR of 1.11 ± 0.21. Patellar height abnormalities were underreported in radiology reports from the population sample. AI keypoint models consistently measure ISR on knee radiographs. Future models can enable radiologists to study musculoskeletal measurements on larger population samples and enhance our understanding of normal and abnormal ranges.

Abstract
The Notch signaling pathway is a key regulator of skeletal muscle development and regeneration. Over the past decade, the discoveries of three new muscle disease genes have added a new dimension to the relationship between the Notch signaling pathway and skeletal muscle: MEGF10, POGLUT1, and JAG2. We review the clinical syndromes associated with pathogenic variants in each of these genes, known molecular and cellular functions of their protein products with a particular focus on the Notch signaling pathway, and potential novel therapeutic targets that may emerge from further investigations of these diseases. The phenotypes associated with two of these genes, POGLUT1 and JAG2, clearly fall within the realm of muscular dystrophy, whereas the third, MEGF10, is associated with a congenital myopathy/muscular dystrophy overlap syndrome classically known as early-onset myopathy, areflexia, respiratory distress, and dysphagia. JAG2 is a canonical Notch ligand, POGLUT1 glycosylates the extracellular domain of Notch receptors, and MEGF10 interacts with the intracellular domain of NOTCH1. Additional genes and their encoded proteins relevant to muscle function and disease with links to the Notch signaling pathway include TRIM32, ATP2A1 (SERCA1), JAG1, PAX7, and NOTCH2NLC. There is enormous potential to identify convergent mechanisms of skeletal muscle disease and new therapeutic targets through further investigations of the Notch signaling pathway in the context of skeletal muscle development, maintenance, and disease.

Abstract
Emery-Dreifuss muscular dystrophy (EDMD) is a rare muscular dystrophy, but is particularly important to diagnose due to frequent life-threatening cardiac complications. EDMD classically presents with muscle weakness, early contractures, cardiac conduction abnormalities and cardiomyopathy, although the presence and severity of these manifestations vary by subtype and individual. Associated genes include EMD, LMNA, SYNE1, SYNE2, FHL1, TMEM43, SUN1, SUN2, and TTN, encoding emerin, lamin A/C, nesprin-1, nesprin-2, FHL1, LUMA, SUN1, SUN2, and titin, respectively. The Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man database recognizes subtypes 1 through 7, which captures most but not all of the associated genes. Genetic diagnosis is essential whenever available, but traditional diagnostic tools can help steer the evaluation toward EDMD and assist with interpretation of equivocal genetic test results. Management is primarily supportive, but it is important to monitor patients closely, especially for potential cardiac complications. There is a high potential for progress in the treatment of EDMD in the coming years.

Abstract
Segmental neurofibromatosis type 5 (NF5) is a rare form of NF, in which the cutaneous and/or neural changes are confined to one region of the body. It is often underdiagnosed or undetected due to the absence of symptoms. Inheritance of NF is different from other types of NF. Intraosseous neurofibromas are rare tumors which develop from nerves supplying the periosteum or nerves following the intraosseous course. Plexiform neurofibroma with associated intraosseous neurofibroma is extremely rare. We report a case of plexiform neurofibroma in the left axilla of a 17-year-old female with associated intraosseous neurofibroma in adjoining left humerus.

Abstract
Pulmonary alveolar microlithiasis (PAM) is a rare chronic lung disease characterized by deposition of intra alveolar calcium and phosphate in bilateral lung parenchyma with predominance in lower and mid zones. Etiology and pathogenesis is not fully understood. However, mutation in SLC34A2 gene that encodes a sodium phosphate co-transporter in alveolar type-II cells resulting in formation and accumulation of microliths rich in calcium phosphate due to impaired clearance is considered the cause of disease. Patients with PAM are asymptomatic till development of hypoxemia and cor pulmonale. It remains static, while in some it progresses to pulmonary fibrosis, respiratory failure and cor pulmonale. We report a case of 44 year old male patient presenting with progressive shortness of breath on exertion for one year in duration with dry cough, more since last six months. Chest radiograph showed dense micronodular opacities giving classical sandstorm appearance. High resolution computed tomography (HRCT) showed microcalcification, subpleural cystic changes and calcified pleura. Lung biopsy showed calcospherites within alveolar spaces.

Abstract
Building upon the demonstration of coherent control and single-shot readout of the electron and nuclear spins of individual (31)P atoms in silicon, we present here a systematic experimental estimate of quantum gate fidelities using randomized benchmarking of 1-qubit gates in the Clifford group. We apply this analysis to the electron and the ionized (31)P nucleus of a single P donor in isotopically purified (28)Si. We find average gate fidelities of 99.95% for the electron and 99.99% for the nuclear spin. These values are above certain error correction thresholds and demonstrate the potential of donor-based quantum computing in silicon. By studying the influence of the shape and power of the control pulses, we find evidence that the present limitation to the gate fidelity is mostly related to the external hardware and not the intrinsic behaviour of the qubit.

Abstract
Arginine metabolism by oral bacteria via the arginine deiminase system (ADS) increases the local pH, which can neutralize the effects of acidification from sugar metabolism and reduce the cariogenicity of oral biofilms. To explore the relationship between oral arginine metabolism and dental caries experience in children, we measured ADS activity in oral samples from 100 children and correlated it with their caries status and type of dentition. Supragingival dental plaque was collected from tooth surfaces that were caries-lesion-free (PF) and from dentinal (PD) and enamel (PE) caries lesions. Regardless of children's caries status or type of dentition, PF (378.6) had significantly higher ADS activity compared with PD (208.4; p < .001) and PE (194.8; p = .005). There was no significant difference in the salivary arginolytic activity among children with different caries status. Mixed-model analysis showed that plaque caries status is significantly associated with ADS activity despite children's age, caries status, and dentition (p < .001), with healthy plaque predicting higher ADS activity compared with diseased plaque. Plaque arginine metabolism varies greatly among children and tooth sites, which may affect their susceptibility to caries.

Abstract
For the first time a single trapped antiproton (p) is used to measure the p magnetic moment μ(p). The moment μ(p)=μ(p)S/(ℏ/2) is given in terms of its spin S and the nuclear magneton (μ(N)) by μ(p)/μ(N)=-2.792 845±0.000 012. The 4.4 parts per million (ppm) uncertainty is 680 times smaller than previously realized. Comparing to the proton moment measured using the same method and trap electrodes gives μ(p)/μ(p)=-1.000 000±0.000 005 to 5 ppm, for a proton moment μ(p)=μ(p)S/(ℏ/2), consistent with the prediction of the CPT theorem.

Abstract
The management of patients with the triad of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) ankylosis, micrognathia and obstructive sleep apnea syndrome is challenging for the oral and maxillofacial surgeon because it involves achieving the desired oral opening, correction of micrognathia, and correction of the obstructed airway. Seven of the authors' triad patients, in whom only the release of ankylosis was performed, developed bradycardia and respiratory distress during postoperative jaw physiotherapy, leading to their non-compliance for active jaw physiotherapy and subsequent reankylosis. This paper suggests a new surgical protocol for the management of patients with the triad, to achieve correction of the obstructed airway, relief of the respiratory distress symptoms, correction of micrognathia and restricted mouth opening. It also provides a logical reason for the occurrence of bradycardia following ankylosis release and its potential role in TMJ reankylosis. It emphasizes that the occurrence of bradycardia in triad patients during jaw exercises is dictated by the severity of their apnea-hypopnea index and the degree of narrowing of their posterior airway space. The recognition and prevention of this by the new protocol is discussed in 7 patients.

Abstract
Antihydrogen atoms (H¯) are confined in an Ioffe trap for 15-1000 s-long enough to ensure that they reach their ground state. Though reproducibility challenges remain in making large numbers of cold antiprotons (p¯) and positrons (e(+)) interact, 5±1 simultaneously confined ground-state atoms are produced and observed on average, substantially more than previously reported. Increases in the number of simultaneously trapped H¯ are critical if laser cooling of trapped H¯ is to be demonstrated and spectroscopic studies at interesting levels of precision are to be carried out.

Abstract
Background: Despite credible scientific advances and the fact that it is preventable, dental caries continues to be a major public health problem in developing countries like India. The first step toward disease prevention at community level is assessment of the disease activity. Aim: Hence this study was conducted to evaluate the change in dental caries status over 2 years in children of Panchkula, Haryana. Materials and Methods: 207 school children having mixed dentition (age 7-8 years) and 103 children (age 12-13 years) were assessed for change in their dmf/DMF status over 2 years. Results and Conclusion: Results revealed that 81% of 7-8-year-old children and 83 % 12-13-year-olds had caries. There was a statistically significant increase in DMFT score of children over 2 years; thus necessitating implementation of rigorous preventive strategies at community level.

Abstract
Adiabatic cooling is shown to be a simple and effective method to cool many charged particles in a trap to very low temperatures. Up to 3×10(6) p are cooled to 3.5 K-10(3) times more cold p and a 3 times lower p temperature than previously reported. A second cooling method cools p plasmas via the synchrotron radiation of embedded e(-) (with many fewer e(-) than p in preparation for adiabatic cooling. No p are lost during either process-a significant advantage for rare particles.

Abstract
Centrifugal separation of antiprotons and electrons is observed, the first such demonstration with particles that cannot be laser cooled or optically imaged. The spatial separation takes place during the electron cooling of trapped antiprotons, the only method available to produce cryogenic antiprotons for precision tests of fundamental symmetries and for cold antihydrogen studies. The centrifugal separation suggests a new approach for isolating low energy antiprotons and for producing a controlled mixture of antiprotons and electrons.

Abstract
Dendrimers are hyperbranched macromolecules having tree like structure, consisting of a core molecule and alternating layers of monomers. They can be synthesized by divergent and convergent growth methods. During synthesis, properties like dendrimer size, molecular mass, surface group can be controlled and configured to the desired need. The ability of dendrimers to encapsulate and bind the guest molecule can be used for solubility enhancement, sustained release and drug delivery applications. In this review we tried to delineate the properties, synthesis methods and expound potential pharmaceutical applications along with toxicological considerations of dendrimers.

Abstract
Buccoadhesive erodible disks of cetylpyridinium chloride were prepared using different bioadhesive polymers along with excipients like mannitol. The purpose of designing the erodible disk was to obviate the need for removal of exhausted device. The optimized disk containing 5.0 mg of cetylpyridinium chloride, 2.0 mg of magnesium stearate and 6.0 mg of mannitol along with sodium carboxy methyl cellulose DVP and hydroxypropylmethylcellulose K4M in the ratio of 1:3 was found to release the drug for a period of over 6.0 h without getting dislodged. Maximum in vitro drug release was found to be 94.78% in 6.0-h study. In situ release characteristics were evaluated using a 'flow-through assembly', which simulated the conditions of the human buccal cavity. The drug concentrations in the in situ samples were found to be above minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of the drug. The bioadhesive performance and the surface pH of the disks were satisfactory. Cetylpyridinium chloride disks were tested against microorganisms commonly found in oro-dental infections namely Candida albicans, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli and Streptococcus mutans. The disk as well as the in situ samples showed inhibition of growth of microorganisms. Approval was taken from Jamia Hamdard Review Board (Ethical Board) to perform in vivo studies in healthy human volunteers. In vivo evaluation of buccoadhesive disks revealed adequate comfort, taste, and non-irritation and none of the volunteers reported severe dry mouth/severe salivation or heaviness at the place of attachment. Salivary concentrations were maintained above MIC for 8.0 h. Correlation was found between the drug concentration in situ and concentration of drug in saliva collected in healthy human volunteers. The correlation was found to be positive with a correlation coefficient of 0.9596. It was found to be statistically significant at 5% confidence level (P<0.05).

Abstract
Fifty psychiatric inpatients included in the study were diagnosed as having substance related disorder, schozophrenia, bipolar disorder, depressive disorder or anxiety disorder based on DSM-IV and ICD-10. All the patients were on multiple drug therapy for a minimum of 7 days in the hospital. The psychomotor performance score assessed with the help of the six letter cancellation test and the digit letter substitution test was compared with a matched group of 50 normal volunteers. The significantly low scores for patients may be considered indicative of the fact that prolonged therapy would be required to attain normal psychomotor status. Thus, simple paper and pencil tests may provide valuable information in assessment of psychomotor and cognitive functions of psychiatric patients during recovery.

Abstract
Subclinical, repeated exposures of F344 rats to sarin resulted in brain alterations in densities of chlonergic receptor subtypes that may be associated with memory loss and cognitive dysfunction. The exposures also depressed the immune system. The rat appears to be a good model for studying the effects of subclinical exposure to a nerve gas.

Abstract
We have previously shown that T cells from rats exposed chronically to cigarette smoke or nicotine (NT) exhibit T cell anergy and decreased proliferation to T cell mitogens. Effects of chronic NT on T cell function persist for at least 2 weeks after the termination of NT treatment. Moreover, these effects of NT are causally related to the decreased Ca(2+) response to T cell receptor (TCR) ligation and constitutive activation of protein tyrosine kinase (PTK) and phospholipase C (PLC)-gamma1 activities. Acute NT treatment also suppresses the Con A-induced T cell proliferation; however, it is not known whether the mechanism(s) by which acute and chronic NT treatments inhibit T cell proliferation are identical. To evaluate this question, LEW rats were acutely treated with NT (1 mg/kg body wt) for 1, 2, or 24 h by an ip injection or implanted with constant-release miniosmotic pumps containing saline or NT (1 mg/kg body wt/day) for a 3-week chronic exposure. Inhibition of Con A-induced proliferation of peripheral blood cells (PBC) by both acute and chronic treatments was reversed by the inhibitor of nicotinic acetylcholine receptors, mecamylamine (MEC), indicating that these receptors are required for T cell proliferation. However, the effect of acute NT on the Con A response was short lived (i.e., observed at 1 and 2 h but not at 24 h after NT administration) and was seen in PBC but not in spleen cells. Unlike the chronic treatment, acute NT administration neither suppressed significantly the TCR-mediated [Ca(2+)](i) response nor did it cause the constitutive activation of PTK and PLC-gamma1 activities in blood lymphocytes. Acute, but not chronic, NT administration increased the plasma corticosterone concentration, and this increase was also inhibited by MEC. Moreover, adrenalectomy abrogated the acute but not chronic NT effects on the Con A response. Thus, the acute and chronic effects of NT on T lymphocytes are mechanistically distinct phenomena. Whereas chronic administration of NT causes T cell anergy, acute effects are primarily mediated via the activation of the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal axis.

Abstract
Chronic exposure of mice and rats to cigarette smoke affects T-cell responsiveness that may account for the decreased T-cell proliferative and T-dependent antibody responses in humans and animals exposed to cigarette smoke. However, the mechanism by which cigarette smoke affects the T cell function is not clearly understood. Our laboratory has shown that chronic exposure of rats to nicotine inhibits the antibody-forming cell response, impairs the antigen-mediated signaling in T cells, and induces T cell anergy. To determine the mechanism of cigarette smoke-induced immunosuppression and to compare it with chronic nicotine exposure, rats were exposed to diluted, mainstream cigarette smoke for up to 30 months or to nicotine (1 mg/kg b.wt./24 h) via miniosmotic pumps for 4 weeks, and evaluated for immunological function in vivo and in vitro. This article presents evidence suggesting that T cells from long-term cigarette smoke-exposed rats exhibit decreased antigen-mediated proliferation and constitutive activation of protein tyrosine kinase and phospholipase C-gamma1 activities. Moreover, spleen cells from smoke-exposed and nicotine-treated animals have depleted inositol-1, 4,5-trisphosphate-sensitive Ca(2+) stores and a decreased ability to raise intracellular Ca(2+) levels in response to T cell antigen receptor ligation. These results suggest that chronic smoking causes T cell anergy by impairing the antigen receptor-mediated signal transduction pathways and depleting the inositol-1,4, 5-trisphosphate-sensitive Ca(2+) stores. Moreover, nicotine may account for or contribute to the immunosuppressive properties of cigarette smoke.

Abstract
Ependymomas are glial tumors of the brain and spinal cord occurring both sporadically and in a familial syndrome, neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2). Previous analyses performed on specimens obtained predominantly from adult patients have shown loss of DNA sequences from chromosome arm 22q, which is the location of the NF2 gene. Previously, we documented the consistent loss of chromosome arm 17p DNA in medulloblastoma and astrocytoma, which are the most common brain tumors in children. Although mutation of the TP53 gene located on 17p is the most frequent genetic mutation in all adult tumor types, such mutations are rare in most childhood brain tumors investigated to date. We studied a series of pediatric ependymoma specimens (16 intracranial and 2 spinal) for loss of 17p and 22q DNA sequences and for mutation of the TP53 and NF2 genes. None of the children had the clinical stigmata of NF2. We detected loss of 17p DNA sequences in 9 of the 18 specimens (50%); in 7 of 9 of these specimens (78%), the 144-D6 marker was deleted. In contrast, only 2 of these same 18 specimens (11%) showed loss of 22q DNA. One TP53 gene mutation was detected in a child from a cancer kindred. No mutations were detected in the NF2 gene. Our results suggest that loss of chromosome arm 17p DNA sequences is common in sporadic pediatric ependymomas and that, in contrast to ependymomas in adults, deletion of chromosome arm 22q sequences is rare. Furthermore, TP53 and NF2 gene mutations do not play an important role in the etiology of sporadic pediatric ependymomas.

Abstract
PURPOSE To compare the ability of different bolus doses of esmolol to blunt the haemodynamic effects of laryngoscopy and tracheal intubation in treated hypertensive patients. METHODS In this randomised, double-blind placebo controlled study, 45 ASA II patients, treated for essential hypertension with drugs other than beta blockers, were divided into three groups of 15 patients each. Patients in different groups either received 20 ml normal saline (Group P), or 100 mg esmolol (Group E100) or 200 mg esmolol (Group E200) as a single bolus intravenous dose before laryngoscopy and intubation. Systolic, diastolic and mean arterial pressure and heart rate were monitored for up to 10 min following intubation and were compared with respective basal readings as well as across groups. RESULTS Esmolol alone reduced systolic arterial pressure (P < 0.01 in Group E100 and P < 0.001 in Group E200) and heart rate (P < 0.001). Though there was an increase in arterial pressure and heart rate in the control group, esmolol 100 mg maintained arterial pressure and heart rate at levels comparable to basal values throughout the study (P > 0.05). Patients receiving esmolol 200 mg had lower values (P < 0.001) than their basal readings during most of the post-intubation study period. CONCLUSION Esmolol 100 mg given as bolus, is effective as well as safe in blunting the haemodynamic responses to laryngoscopy and tracheal intubation in treated hypertensive patients.

Abstract
Individuals with severe forms of congenital neutropenia suffer from recurrent infections. The therapeutic use of recombinant human granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (rhG-CSF) to increase the neutrophil count is associated with fewer infections and an improved quality of life. However, the long-term effects of this new therapy are largely unknown. In particular, it is unclear if myeloid leukemia, a known complication of some forms of congenital neutropenia, will occur with increased frequency among patients who receive long-term treatment with hematopoietic growth factors. We report 13 patients with congenital disorders of myelopoiesis who developed leukemic transformation with either myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) or acute myelogenous leukemia (AML) and 1 who acquired a clonal cytogenetic abnormality without evidence of MDS or AML while receiving rhG-CSF. The bone marrows of 10 patients showed monosomy 7 and 5 had activating RAS mutations. These abnormalities were not detected in pretreatment bone marrows and cessation of rhG-CSF was not associated with either clinical improvement or cytogenetic remission. We conclude that patients with severe forms of congenital neutropenia are at relatively high risk of developing MDS and AML. The occurrence of monosomy 7 and RAS mutations in these cases suggests that the myeloid progenitors of some patients are genetically predisposed to malignant transformation. The relationship between therapeutic rhG-CSF and leukemogenesis in patients with severe chronic neutropenia is unclear.

Abstract
A total of thirty cases of aluminium phosphide poisoning were studied for gross and microscopic changes in various organs of the body ie, lungs, liver, kidneys, heart, brain, stomach and adrenals. The histopathological changes revealed varying degrees of congestion, oedema and leucocytic infiltration, changes suggestive of cellular hypoxia. The most dramatic effects were produced in lungs, kidneys and adrenals.

Abstract
Children with neurofibromatosis, type 1 (NF-1) are at increased risk of developing malignant myeloid disorders and their bone marrows frequently show loss of the normal allele of the NF1 tumor-suppressor gene. NF1 encodes a protein called neurofibromin, which accelerates guanosine triphosphate (GTP) hydrolysis on the p21ras (Ras) family of signaling proteins. We used a genetic approach to test the hypothesis that NF1 negatively regulates myeloid cell growth through its effect on Ras. This model predicts that, if RAS mutations and loss of NF1 function deregulate myeloid growth by the same biomechanical mechanism, then activating RAS mutations will be restricted to children with malignant myeloid disorders who do not have NF-1. We studied 71 children, including 28 with bone marrow monosomy 7 syndrome (Mo7), 35with juvenile chronic myelogenous leukemia (JCML), three with other forms of preleukemia, and five with acute myelogenous leukemia (AML), for activating mutations of KRAS and NRAS. The incidence of RAS mutations was 21% (12 of 55) in patients without NF-1 and 0% (zero of 16) in children with NF-1 (P = .04). Among the 55 patients who did not have NF-1, we found RAS mutations in four of 27 with Mo 7, in five of 24 with JCML, in two of 3 with AML, and in a patient with myeloproliferative syndrome (MPS). These data from primary human cancer cells provide strong genetic evidence that NF1 limits the growth of myeloid cells by regulating Ras.

Abstract
PURPOSE BW 589C induces severe tumor hypoxia by modifying the affinity of oxyhemoglobin, causing a left shift of the oxygen-hemoglobin dissociation curve. 31P magnetic resonance spectra (MRS) was used to monitor the effects of BW 589C on tumor energy metabolism in three experimental tumor models. METHODS AND MATERIALS HT-29 colon xenograft, murine transplantable RIF-1 fibrosarcoma and KHT sarcoma were studied in unanesthetised mice. 31P MR spectra were acquired on a 4.7 Tesla magnet before administering oral BW 589C (250 mg/kg) and after 3, 6, and 24 h. Samples of tail vein blood were then taken for 2,3 DPG levels for RIF-1 and HT-29 tumors. RESULTS Doubling of inorganic phosphorus (Pi) to total phosphorus was observed 5-6 h after BW 589C for all three tumor types. Although the left shift due to BW 589C persists at 24 h, the level of Pi to total phosphorus returned to baseline with no significant difference from control values for the RIF-1 and HT-29 tumors. These results suggest that there was cellular metabolic adaptation to the reduction of oxygen delivery by BW 589C. This does not appear to involve 2,3 DPG as there was no significant alteration in tumor levels. The death of hypoxic cells may, also, have contributed to the recovery of Pi to total phosphorus. CONCLUSION The efficacy of bioreductive drugs can be enhanced by increasing the severity of tumor hypoxia. 31P MRS in conjunction with other techniques for assessing the intratumor environment could play an important role in planning cancer therapy.

Abstract
Prolonged hypoxia induced transient drug resistance in Chinese hamster lung fibroblasts. Previously hypoxic cells were resistant to adriamycin and resistant to etoposide. Complete recovery of etoposide sensitivity was observed following reaeration for 24 hr. A change in P-glycoprotein expression was unlikely to contribute to the resistance caused by hypoxia, since adriamycin resistance was not reversed by verapamil. However, alteration in the plasma membrane structure may be involved, since previously hypoxic cells were resistant to extracellular superoxide radical generated by the addition of xanthine/xanthine oxidase. In contrast, adriamycin sensitivity was not altered by hypoxia in 3 human breast-cancer cell lines. MDA-468 and MCF-7/Adr differed in their response to EGF, independent of the presence of hypoxia. These results suggest that hypoxic-stress-induced drug resistance is not generalized.

Abstract
Phospholipid metabolism of human breast cancer was studied by 31P magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS). In vivo localised 31P MR spectra were obtained from the tumour alone using phase modulated rotating frame imaging. For 31 tumours, median (range) phosphomonoester (PME) to ATP ratio was 1.48 (0.57-3.78) and phosphodiester (PDE) to ATP ratio was 1.65 (0.44-3.89). DNA index and S phase fraction (SPF) were measured by flow cytometry of paraffin embedded tissue. Twelve (39%) tumours were diploid and 19 aneuploid. Median (range) SPF for 29 assessable tumours was 5.3% (0.6-28%), with significantly greater median SPF for aneuploid tumours (9.3%) than diploid (3.8%, P = 0.007). There was a significant association between PME/ATP and SPF (P = 0.03) due to a significant correlation for aneuploid tumours (P = 0.01). High resolution 31P MRS of extracts from 18 tumours (including seven studied in vivo) demonstrated that the PME peak consists predominantly of phosphoethanolamine (PE) with a smaller contribution from phosphocholine (PC) (median (range) PE/PC: 3.02 (1.13-5.09)). Changes in PME/ATP were observed for two tumours where tamoxifen stablized disease and may be consistent with the cytostatic effects of this drug.

Estimation of serum copper and ceruloplasmin was done in 25 non pregnant females, 25 healthy pregnant women followed from I to III trimester and 75 pregnant women with anaemia--25 in each trimester. Anaemia was further divided into mild, moderate and severe types (27, 32 & 16 cases respectively). Normal pregnancy was associated with progressive increase in serum copper and ceruloplasmin--values being highest in III trimester. All types of anaemias in pregnancy revealed statistically significant elevation of serum copper and ceruloplasmin when compared to corresponding gestational period in normal pregnancy.
