Dietary supplement of fermented grass forage regulates growth performance, antioxidant capacity, and immune response of broiler chickens

The current study aimed to determine the effects of different levels of fermented Juncao grass (FG) on growth parameters, blood constituents, immunity, and antioxidative properties of broilers. A total of 240 (21-d-old) broiler chicks were randomly distributed to four dietary treatments of sixty birds, with six replicate pens and ten birds in each. Fermented grass was added to the basal diet at four levels with 0, 5, 10, and 15% FG. The results revealed that broilers fed 5% FG had significantly higher (P < 0.05) final body weight (FBW), average daily gain (WG) and average daily feed intake (ADFI). The best conversion ratio (FCR) was recorded for broilers supplemented with 5% FG compared to the group supplemented with 15% FG (P < 0.05). Increasing FG % decreased (P < 0.05) anti-inflammatory cytokines IL-4, IL-6, and IL-10. However, FG increased (P < 0.05) proinflammatory cytokines IFN-γ, IL-1, IL-2, IL-12, and TNF-α (P < 0.05). Moreover, IgA, IgG, and IgM levels increased (P < 0.05) with increasing FG %. In addition, increasing FG % in broiler rations significantly increased (P < 0.05) serum antioxidant levels of T-AOC, GSH-PX, SOD, CAT, NO and GSH, but decreased (P < 0.05) MDA levels compared to the control group. Conclusively, fermented Juncao grass would be considered a novel herbal feed additive for improving broiler performance, immunity, antioxidant, and health status. Nevertheless, further research at the molecular level is needed to quantify the effects of these herbal components on cellular and humoral immune functions in broiler chickens.

Metabolic properties, gene functions, and biosafety analysis reveal the action of three rhizospheric plant growth-promoting bacteria of Jujuncao (Pennisetum giganteum)

This study aimed to identify the specific genes associated with plant growth promotion and cadmium tolerance in three bacteria strains associated with Pennisetum giganteum as well as to determine their biosafety levels in their potential use as biofertilizers for promoting plant growth and phytoremediation activities. The plant growth-promoting (PGP) abilities of Enterobacter cloacae strain RCB980 (A3), Klebsiella pneumonia strain kpa (A4), and Klebsiella sp. strain XT-2 (A7) were determined by a growth promotion trial and through testing for PGP traits such as 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid (ACC) deaminase enzyme production, phosphorus solubilization, siderophore synthesis, and indole-3 acetic acid (IAA) production. The genes that potentially contribute to the beneficial activities of these three strains were identified through an analysis of their genomes. To establish the biosafety of the candidate PGPB, a pathological study was undertaken whereby 20 Kunming mice were injected intraperitoneally to study and analyze the effects of the strains on growth and lung paraffin sections of the mice. The strains had no obvious toxicity effect on the tested mice and were therefore not considered as highly virulent strains. These strains are thus considered non-toxic, safe, and highly recommended for use in environmental remediation strategies and agricultural production.

Linkages between social and financial performance: Evidence from Sub-Saharan Africa microfinance institutions

Microfinance Institutions provide financial services to low-income clients and the poor who are excluded from formal financial institutions. Hence, the sustainability of microfinance institutions (MFIs) remains essential. This study examines the relationship between social and financial performance and whether there is a trade-off between both objectives after the 2008 global financial crisis. The study used 735 observations from 105 Microfinance Institutions across 26 countries in Sub-Saharan Africa from 2011 to 2017 and employed the Generalized Method of Moment and Seeming Unrelated Regression for the analyses. The results indicate that increasing the number of customers [breadth of outreach increased the financial performance (return on equity)]. The result also showed that the Percentage of Female Borrowers contributes to the sustainability of Microfinance Institutions due to their higher loan repayment rate than males. In addition, our results document a trade-off between the Depth of Outreach and Operational Self-Sustainability among Microfinance Institutions. The study recommends the following: 1) Microfinance institutions should purposefully increase credit facilities extended to female borrowers since that will make them sustainable. 2) Governments in Sub-Saharan African countries should provide increased financial support in the form of subsidies and tax holidays to Microfinance Institutions operating in very deprived areas, and 3) Management of Microfinance institutions on the continent should regularly re-train and upgrade their staff capacity to effectively assess and manage customers before and after extending credit to them to sustain the industry.

Abscisic Acid Mediates Drought-Enhanced Rhizosheath Formation in Tomato

The rhizosheath, commonly defined as soil adhering to the root surface, may confer drought tolerance in various crop species by enhancing access to water and nutrients under drying stress conditions. Since the role of phytohormones in establishing this trait remains largely unexplored, we investigated the role of ABA in rhizosheath formation of wild-type (WT) and ABA-deficient (notabilis, not) tomatoes. Both genotypes had similar rhizosheath weight, root length, and root ABA concentration in well-watered soil. Drying stress treatment decreased root length similarly in both genotypes, but substantially increased root ABA concentration and rhizosheath weight of WT plants, indicating an important role for ABA in rhizosheath formation. Neither genotype nor drying stress treatment affected root hair length, but drying stress treatment decreased root hair density of not. Under drying stress conditions, root hair length was positively correlated with rhizosheath weight in both genotypes, while root hair density was positively correlated with rhizosheath weight in well-watered not plants. Root transcriptome analysis revealed that drought stress increased the expression of ABA-responsive transcription factors, such as AP2-like ER TF, alongside other drought-regulatory genes associated with ABA (ABA 8'-hydroxylase and protein phosphatase 2C). Thus, root ABA status modulated the expression of specific gene expression pathways. Taken together, drought-induced rhizosheath enhancement was ABA-dependent, but independent of root hair length.

Insights from the cDNA and EST analysis of Antrodia cinnamomea

It is of interest to document the insights gleaned from the cDNA and EST analysis of Antrodia cinnamomea (a fungal species). Hence a library of sequences was constructed and analysed using standard procedures to gain new insights. Therefore, 65 ESTs, with size ranging from 300-2000 bp, were constructed. This included 46 ESTs with definite annotation, 18 ESTs were hypothetical and 1 new protein derived from BLAST analysis. We assigned 227 Gene Ontology terms linked to cell composition, transport, catalytic activity, and regulation functions in these sequences. Moreover, 56 matching genes were found in 8 Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes pathways. Data also showed 271 SSRs from Antrodia cinnamomea ESTs with an occurrence frequency of 96.82%. The STRING data analysis showed 29 genes encoded enzymes highly involved in protein-to-protein interactions linked to expression of regulation function. Thus, we documented some insights from the cDNA and EST analysis of Antrodia cinnamomea for further data mining.

Long-term survival in advanced chronic myelogenous leukemia following bone marrow transplantation from haploidentical related donors

From 1987 to 1991, 26 patients with CML and a median age of 31 years received allogeneic BMT from a partially mismatched related donor (PMRD) who shared at least one haplotype with the recipient. Nine patients were in accelerated phase (AP), and 11 patients were in blast crisis (BC) at the time of BMT. Patients were mismatched either in graft-versus-host or host-versus-graft directions for one antigen in 3 patients, two antigens in 14 patients, and three antigens in 9 patients. All patients were prepared with a regimen consisting of total body irradiation, etoposide, cytosine arabinoside, cyclophosphamide and methylprednisolone. All marrows were treated ex vivo with T10B91.A-31, a monoclonal antibody directed toward the alpha beta heterodimer of the CD3 receptor, and rabbit complement. Additional GVHD prophylaxis included either the anti-CD5 immunoconjugate XomaZyme-H65, cyclosporine, or both in combination with methylprednisolone. Eight patients did not have sustained engraftment. The 100-day survival was 42%. The incidence of > or = grade II acute GVHD was 29%. The incidence of chronic GVHD was 50% and was limited in all cases. The median survival at 4 years for all 26 patients was 27%. Seven patients (CP 1, AP 3, BC 3) remain in hematologic remission 1297-2241+ days after transplantation. AlloBMT from a PMRD may be considered for patients with advanced CML who lack a matched sibling or unrelated donor.

Serological studies of a case of fatal craniofacial mucormycosis

Counter-immunoelectrophoresis and indirect immunofluorescence tests were used in a fatal case of craniofacial mucormycosis. The indirect immunofluorescent test was rapid and more sensitive than counter-immunoelectrophoresis and provided estimation of serum antifungal antibodies (IgA, IgG and IgM). The high serum IgA titer (comparable to IgM) found in this case of acute infection suggests a role of IgA antibodies which needs further investigation.
