Abstract
BACKGROUND The Great East Japan Earthquake and the resulting tsunami and nuclear disaster on March 11, 2011 have had a profound and lasting effect on residents of Japan's Fukushima Prefecture, particularly among evacuees. While there continues to be extensive news coverage and academic study of Fukushima Prefecture's recovery, there has been little exploration of individual narratives. This study aims to illuminate some individual stories of medical students at Fukushima Medical University (FMU) who lived in the Prefecture at the time of the Earthquake. METHODS A qualitative approach was taken in order to investigate individuals' experiences with the goal of adding a personal dimension to quantitative studies on the subject. 10 open-ended ethnographic interviews were conducted with medical students at FMU in years 1-5 who lived in Fukushima Prefecture at the time of the Great East Japan Earthquake. All interviews were audio recorded and transcribed. Transcriptions were reviewed using inductive thematic analysis under the lens of ethnographic anthropology. RESULTS Three major themes emerged from these interviews: first, that the events following the Earthquake influenced not only these students' decisions to pursue careers in medicine, but the ways in which they hope to practice medicine in the future. Second, that these students were motivated to share their experiences by a want to change Fukushima Prefecture's public image. And lastly, that the students viewed the opportunity to discuss their experiences through these interviews as healing, both for themselves and for the future. CONCLUSIONS While multiple factors undoubtably contributed these students' medical education, they cite the Earthquake as essential to their approach to their medical careers. Additionally, opportunities for the participants to discuss their experiences following the Earthquake appear to be rare but valued, as the students view their stories as their "legacies." The enduring, burdening effects of the Earthquake appear to have galvanized the participating students to act on behalf of their communities and their Prefecture. Further qualitative studies in more generalizable populations are needed to improve and deepen our understanding of the societal, cultural, and personal impacts of the Great East Japan Earthquake.

Abstract
The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has caused significant psychological impact on medical professionals, including medical students, many who have been caring for patients on the frontlines. Understanding how medical students perceive their stressful life experiences is important as the mental health of these future physicians directly impacts their ability to care for patients. We assessed for post-traumatic growth and resilience in the face of traumatic events among a cohort of medical students that attended a medical school located in an early epicenter of the COVID-19 pandemic. Between October 29, 2020 and December 1, 2020, medical students at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City were surveyed on various stressful life events, including COVID-19. We identified specific resilience behaviors, including establishing a supportive social network, relying on a moral compass, and using cognitive flexibility, that medical students commonly used to cope with traumatic experiences. Compared with students who perceived COVID-19 as their most stressful life event, students who perceived other events, such as family issues or serious illness, as most stressful experienced less COVID-related stress (t = -2.2, p = .03), greater posttraumatic growth (t = 4.3, p < .001), and demonstrated more resilient behaviors including establishing and nurturing a supportive social network (t = 2.2, p = .03), developing brain fitness (t = 2.2, p = .03), and finding meaning and purpose in things (t = 2.9, p = .006). This suggests that stressful experiences prior to or in parallel with COVID-19 encouraged posttraumatic growth and development of resilience behaviors that were protective to COVID-19-related stress.

Abstract
Abstract
Background: Primary angiosarcoma of the thyroid is a rare, aggressive thyroid malignancy most typically found in the Alpine regions of Europe. We present a case of non-Alpine thyroid angiosarcoma complicated by recurrent surgical bed hematoma.
Case: An 81-year-old Albanian man presented with two months of dyspnea and hemoptysis and was found to have a large thyroid mass, multiple subcentimeter pulmonary nodules, and a left pleural effusion seen on CTA of the chest. He had a suppressed TSH < 0.008 uIU/mL (n 0.400-4.200 uIU/mL) on presentation with a normal free T4 (1.36 ng/dL; n 0.80-1.50 ng/dL) and total T3 (107 ng/dL; n 87-178 ng/dL). Labs from 3 years prior were consistent with prior subclinical hyperthyroidism: TSH 0.28 uIU/mL, free T4 1.35 ng/dL, and free T3 3.98 pg/mL (n 2-4.4 pg/mL). A thyroid ultrasound was performed and showed multiple bilateral thyroid nodules, the largest of which was 6.0 x 7.8 x 5.4 cm in the right lower pole. He had no compressive symptoms and was clinically euthyroid. FNA of the nodule was non-diagnostic and cytology of the pleural fluid was negative for malignancy. He underwent a bronchoscopy which showed blood clots without endobronchial lesions, VATS with pleural biopsy, and right hemithyroidectomy. Pathology showed high grade epithelioid malignancy arranged in solid, variably discohesive nests and sheets, associated with vague vasoformative features and hemorrhage. Immunostains were diffusely and strongly positive for ERG as well as CD31 and AE1/3, but negative for PAX-8, TTF-1, and thyroglobulin, supporting a diagnosis of angiosarcoma. The remainder of the thyroid tissue was non-neoplastic with multinodular hyperplasia. After initial discharge, he re-presented on post-op day 10 with bleeding from the surgical site. CT of the neck showed extensive hematoma (10.3 x 5.0 x 8.7 cm) and he was taken back to the OR for evacuation. Residual tumor tissue found along the R carotid artery was determined to be the culprit. Over the next month the patient remained admitted for supportive transfusions, and palliative radiation to the pulmonary nodules and the residual tumor was initiated. His hospitalization was complicated by a proximal lower extremity DVT, which was treated with an IVC filter. Repeat chest imaging at six weeks showed new and progressive pulmonary nodules. Upon completion of 3 weeks of RT the patient was discharged debilitated, fatigued, and using supplemental oxygen. His family elected to pursue hospice care.
Conclusion: This case represents a rare, aggressive malignancy complicated by extrathyroidal extension and recurrent hematoma resulting in severe morbidity and precluding further systemic interventions. These highly vascular tumors likely present an elevated risk for postoperative hematoma which clinicians should recognize.

Abstract
In March of 2011, a 9.0 magnitude earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear explosion damaged northeastern Japan. While nine years have passed, the memory of this disaster continues to linger. This qualitative study had three main goals. First it aimed to explore the reactions and interpretations of adolescents living in areas affected by the disaster. Second, it sought to examine the behaviors and beliefs that enabled these students to not only recover but thrive. Third, it strived to build a more global and dynamic framework of resilience. A convenience sample of 18 students participated in semi-structured face-to-face interviews. Their narratives were qualitatively analyzed using thematic content analysis. Overall, four themes, each with four codes or sub-themes, emerged as sources of resilience including social support (social networks, role models, and community service), hopeful future orientation (cognitive reappraisal, optimism, and motivation to be physician), active emotions (rational compassion, luck, and suppression) and sense of purpose or duty (sharing of personal story, motivation to educate others, and Fukushima image). These findings reveal the experiences of highly resilient youth facing trauma and the connection between childhood adversity and career choices. They also begin to uncover the unique ways that culture, society, and tradition impact processes of recovery.

Abstract
Abstract
Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICI), such as monoclonal antibodies to cytotoxic T lymphocyte associated protein 4 (CTLA-4), programmed cell death 1 (PD-1) and PD ligand 1 (PD-L1) are recognized as effective cancer-directed therapies. Yet, ICI-induced activation of the immune system results in immune-related adverse events (irAEs) affecting many organs, including the thyroid. Separately, Vitamin D (Vit D) deficiency has been associated with increased risk of autoimmune thyroid disease. We hypothesized that patients who were Vit D deficient at the time of initiating ICI therapy would be more likely to develop thyroid irAEs. We retrospectively collected data for 411 patients who received ICIs at our institution between January 2011 and April 2017. We then identified 91 of these patients who had 25-OH Vit D levels obtained; 2 were excluded from analysis due to previous thyroidectomy. We recorded demographics, cancer type, Vit D level closest to the start date of ICI therapy, and thyroid irAEs. Patients were categorized as Vit D deficient (<20ng/mL), insufficient (20-29.9ng/mL) or sufficient (≥30ng/mL). We compared patient demographic and clinical characteristics between the VitD categories. Proportions were compared using Fisher’s Exact Test. Of the 89 patients, 48.3% were female and 51.7% were male. Mean age was 67.2 (SD±10.6) years with 57% white, 8% black, 10% hispanic, 7% Asian, and 18% other / unknown. 20% of patients had non-small cell lung cancer, 15% melanoma, 13% hepatocellular carcinoma, 12% multiple myeloma (MM), 8% renal cell carcinoma (RCC), 7% head and neck squamous cell carcinoma, 7% urothelial carcinoma and 18% other cancer types. 21.3% were Vit D deficient, 40.4% were insufficient, and 38.2% were sufficient. Patients with Vit D deficiency and insufficiency were younger (age 64.1± 11.7, 65.9±9.5 years, respectively) than the Vit D sufficiency group (70.1±10.5years, p=0.046). No significant differences between males and females were observed between Vit D categories. Across cancer types, the highest prevalence of Vit D deficiency was in RCC (42.9%) and MM (36.4%). Hispanic and Asian patients had the highest prevalence of Vit D deficiency (44.4% and 33.3%, respectively). 11 patients (12.4%) developed a thyroid irAE. Thyroid irAEs occurred in 5.3% with Vit D deficiency, 8.1% with Vit D insufficiency, and 20% with Vit D sufficiency, but the association was not statistically significant (p=0.2). In contrast to our hypothesis, Vit D deficiency was not associated with a higher rate of thyroid irAEs. In fact our data suggest that patients who are vitamin D sufficient at the time of starting ICI therapy may be at greater risk of developing thyroid irAEs. Our study is limited by small numbers and the retrospective nature of the study. Prospective studies should be performed to determine the significance of Vit D levels on ICI related thyroid disease.

Abstract
In March of 2011, an earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear accident struck northern Japan causing profound damage to the surrounding area and lasting effects to all those who lived there. Fukushima Medical University (FMU), the closest hospital that remained open during the disaster, was greatly impacted and its students rallied to help the cause. Many of them were directly affected as their neighborhoods were ruined and family and friends were injured or killed. Our study sought to better understand how this disaster impacted their posttraumatic growth and resilience in the wake of the disaster and today, 8 years later. There were three goals of this study. First, we aimed to replicate previous research that showed positive effects of disaster volunteerism on medical students' posttraumatic growth. Second, we sought to better understand the role of resilience in the wellbeing of these students. Finally, we wanted to explore the advantages to our newly created 10-Factor Resilience Behavioral Scale, which we used alongside the Davidson Trauma Scale (DTS), Posttraumatic Growth Inventory (PTGI-X), and Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC). Overall, 579 responses were collected (response rate of 71.9%). Volunteers continued to show greater PTG as well as greater overall resilience. Furthermore, there were positive correlations between students' feelings of confusion, anger, sadness, guilt or anxiety and their sense of resilience, both at the time of the disaster and in the most recent month, suggesting that within Japanese culture difficult emotions may promote resilient behaviors and actions.

Abstract
Six years after the March 2011 Triple Disaster, over 35,000 Japanese individuals remain in temporary housing. Evacuated residents, many of who are elderly, face mental health challenges. This study evaluates the well being of individuals living in temporary housing within Fukushima. Reactions to relocation were explored using Photovoice, a community-based participatory research method, in which a set of research questions are examined qualitatively through photographs and interviews. Seven participants (average age = 69.7) were provided cameras to answer a set of self-generated questions, a process that was repeated three times. An initial analysis found resilience among participants, which was explored using a theoretical framework of resiliency. Residents discussed how relocation has disrupted their lives and coping strategies they employ to ameliorate stressors. They were often optimistic and future-oriented, stating that they wanted to "live strong" after the disaster. These resilient mindsets were personified in action: all engaged in hobbies, critical for their emotional well being. Participants also emphasized the importance of community and familial support. The evidence of resilience in participants is encouraging, suggesting that these vulnerable elderly internally displaced residents are recovering from the disruption of relocation. These themes should be explored in larger temporary housing communities. Considering the number of relocated individuals today, understanding how to foster resilience could be used to inform the development of future temporary housing shelters.

Abstract
In search of efficient thermoelectric nanostructures, many theoretical works predicted that nanopillars, placed on the surface of silicon membranes, nanobeams, or nanowires, can reduce the thermal conductivity of these nanostructures. To verify these predictions, we experimentally investigate heat conduction in suspended silicon nanobeams with periodic arrays of aluminium nanopillars. Our room temperature time-domain thermoreflectance experiments show that the nanobeams with nanopillars have 20% lower thermal conductivity as compared to pristine nanobeams. We discuss possible explanations of these data, including coherent effects, and conclude that the thermal conductivity is reduced mainly by phonon scattering at the pillar/beam interface due to the intermixing of aluminium and silicon atoms, as supported by the transmission electron microscopy. As this intermixing does not only reduce thermal conductivity but may also increase electrical conductivity, these nanostructures are exceptionally promising for thermoelectric applications.

Abstract
This study examines the effects of DEP components on circulatory CC and CXC chemokines, potent activators and chemoattractants for macrophage and leukocyte subpopulations, in a murine model of lung inflammation. 1CR mice were divided into six experimental groups which received intratracheal inoculation of vehicle, LPS alone (2.5 mg/kg), organic chemicals in DEP (DEP-OC: 4 mg/kg) extracted with dichloromethane, residual carbonaceous nuclei after the extraction (washed DEP: 4 mg/kg), DEP-OC + LPS, or washed DEP + LPS. Intratracheal instillation of each DEP component alone did not significantly change the circulatory level of macrophage inflammatory protein (MIP)-1α, MIP-2, and macrophage chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1) 24 h after the exposure as compared with vehicle instilled alone. In the LPS group, MCP-1, but not MIP-1α or MIP-2, was significantly greater than in the vehicle group. The combined administration of LPS and washed DEP caused a further three to five-fold increase in MIP-1α, MIP-2, and MCP-1 proteins in the serum as compared with LPS administered alone. No significant difference between the LPS + DEP-OC group and the LPS group was observed. These results indicate that pulmonary exposure to washed DEP enhances circulatory level of chemokines during lung inflammation. The enhancement may be important in the aggravations of systemic inflammatory responses and ischemic cardiovascular conditions associated with air pollution.

Abstract
Bioactivity of cell wall component(s) of fungi has not been fully elucidated, especially in vivo. We isolated Candida soluble beta-D-glucan (CSBG) from Candida albicans (C. albicans). We investigated the effects of airway exposure to CSBG on the immune systems in the airways in mice. CSBG exposure induced neutrophilic and eosinophilic inflammation in the lung, which was concomitant with the increased local expression of proinflammatory cytokines including tumor necrosis factor - α, interleukin (IL)-1 β, IL-6, macrophage inflammatory protein -1 α, macrophage chemoattractant protein -1, RANTES (regulated on activation and normal T cells expressed and secreted), and eotaxin. The lung inflammation with enhanced expression of proinflammatory proteins caused by CSBG was directly related to its structure, since structurally degraded products of CSBG by formic acid induced negligible responses in the lung. CSBG enhanced nuclear localization of phosphorylated signal transducer and activator of transcription (STAT)-6 in the lung. These results suggest that airway exposure to CSBG induces lung inflammation, at least partly, via the enhanced expression of proinflammatory cytokines and the activation of STAT-6 pathway, and can be a proper murine model for fungal lung inflammation.

Abstract
The March 2011 "triple disaster" (earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear accident) had a profound effect on northern Japan. Many medical students at Fukushima Medical University volunteered in the relief effort. We aimed to investigate the nature of students' post-disaster involvement and examine the psychological impact of their experiences using a survey containing elements from the Davidson Trauma Scale and Posttraumatic Growth Inventory. We collected 494 surveys (70 % response rate), of which 132 students (26.7 %) had volunteered. Volunteers were more likely to be older, have witnessed the disaster in person, had their hometowns affected, and had a family member or close friend injured. In the month after 3/11, volunteers were more likely to want to help, feel capable of helping, and report an increased desire to become a physician. Both in the month after 3/11 and the most recent month before the survey, there were no significant differences in distressing symptoms, such as confusion, anger, or sadness, between volunteers and non-volunteers. Volunteers reported a significantly higher level of posttraumatic growth than non-volunteers. Participating in a greater variety of volunteer activities was associated with a higher level of posttraumatic growth, particularly in the Personal Strength domain. There may be self-selection in some criteria, since students who were likely to be resistant to confusion/anxiety/sadness may have felt more capable of helping and been predisposed to volunteer. However, participation in post-disaster relief efforts did not appear to have a harmful effect on medical students, an important consideration for mobilizing volunteers after future disasters.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Allergic transfusion reactions (ATRs) and febrile non-haemolytic transfusion reactions (FNHTRs) are the two major types of transfusion-related adverse reactions (TRARs). Although prestorage leucocyte reduction and diversion of the first aliquot of blood (LR/D) could reduce FNHTRs and bacterial contamination in adult transfusion, ATRs are still problematic. In addition, there is little information about TRARs in paediatric population. MATERIALS AND METHODS We conducted a single-centre retrospective analysis of all transfusions, except washing products, and TRARs for 153 months to evaluate related factors such as delivery of treatment and the characteristics of recipients. RESULTS Most TRARs were FNHTRs and/or ATRs in children. In delivering blood products with LR/D, the frequencies of not only FNHTRs but also ATRs were significantly reduced with both platelet concentrates (PCs) and red cell concentrates (RCCs). TRARs of fresh-frozen plasma were infrequent in children. In addition, even after the introduction of LR/D, ATRs were significantly more frequent in patients with primary haematological and malignant diseases who received PCs and RCCs, older patients who received PCs and patients who received frequent RCCs. CONCLUSION These results suggest that leucocytes or mediators from leucocytes are underlying cause of ATRs in addition to FNHTRs in children. Furthermore, particular characteristics of patients would be other risk factors for ATRs.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The three-dimensional shape information of teeth provides useful information. However, obtaining accurate three-dimensional shapes of teeth is difficult without extracting them physically. In this study, we aimed to develop a method for automatically extracting accurate three-dimensional shapes of teeth from dental CT images. METHODS The proposed method includes pre-processing and region extraction. Pre-processing is a combination of image-processing techniques that enhances tooth regions. In the region-extraction process, the region-growing method is introduced for extracting a region of each tooth. Constraint conditions determined by considering the characteristics of the structure of teeth are introduced for accurate extraction. Finally, morphological image processing is applied for eliminating discontinuous points. RESULTS We carried out an experiment in which the three-dimensional shapes of teeth were reconstructed from dental CT images. Quantitative evaluation was performed by measuring the three-dimensional spatial accordance rates between the region obtained by the proposed method and the manually extracted region. The proposed method was significantly more accurate than an existing method at the 5% level. CONCLUSIONS The experimental results showed that the proposed method reconstructs the shapes of teeth with high precision. However, an unextracted region remained at the surface of the enamel. Solving this problem and improving the extraction accuracy are important topics for future work.

Abstract
The objective of this article is to systematically review the changes in insulin resistance after various types of bariatric surgical procedures. A Pubmed and EMBASE search for studies measuring insulin resistance before and after bariatric surgery was done and all original research articles from 1980 to present (2011) were included. Only the currently widely performed bariatric procedures were included. A meta-analysis of change in HOMA-IR was conducted, grouping studies with similar duration of follow-up. The percentage decrease in HOMA-IR at <=2 weeks, 1 month, 3 months, 6 months, 12 months and >16-18 months was found to be (mean ± standard error) -33.48 ± 5.78, -46.43 ± 6.99, -38.79 ± 9.64, -58.62 ± 7.38, -44.91 ± 7.98 and -67.04 ± 10.78%, respectively. RYGB (gastric bypass) and BPD (biliopancreatic diversion) produced a significant decrease in insulin resistance at 2 weeks after surgery, while LSG (sleeve gastrectomy) was strongly trending. LSG produced an earlier decrease in insulin resistance when compared to LAGB (gastric banding). RYGB, BPD and LSG produce an early decrease in insulin resistance through yet unknown mechanisms.

Abstract
Fructooligosaccharides (FOS) are prebiotic supplements that can enhance immunological responses in the host to activate mucosal immunity, probably through regulation of gastrointestinal microflora. An area that has not been investigated, however, is the therapeutic potential of prebiotics on allergic airway diseases. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effects of dietary supplementation with FOS on a murine model of airway inflammation induced by the house dust mite allergen Dermatophagoides farinae (Der f). Male C3H/HeN mice were intratracheally administered with Der f and were fed a diet containing 0% or 2.5% FOS ad libitum. Supplementation with FOS alleviated mite allergen-related airway inflammation characterized by eosinophilic inflammation and goblet cell hyperplasia, which was evidenced by cytological and histological examinations. In addition, the FOS-supplemented diet reduced the serum allergen-specific IgG1 level as compared with a control diet in the presence of the mite allergen. Moreover, FOS tended to suppress the expression of IL-5 and eotaxin in the lungs, which is enhanced by mite allergen. These results suggest that dietary supplementation with FOS can prevent/improve airway inflammation induced by the mite allergen. This effect can be at least partially associated with the inhibition of allergen-specific Ig production and probably with that of IL-5 and eotaxin expression.

Abstract
Nano-sized particles are diffusing in the environment with the development of nanotechnology. Polystyrene (PS) nanoparticles are modified industrial products and pharmaceutical agents, however, adverse effects of PS nanoparticles remain to be elucidated. In the present study, we investigated the effects of PS nanoparticles with different sizes on the atopic dermatitis (AD)-like skin lesions in NC/Nga mice assumed to show the skin barrier defect/dysfunction in the presence or absence of mite allergen. Male NC/Nga mice were injected intradermally with three different-sized PS nanoparticles (25, 50, or 100 nm) and/or mite allergen into their right ears. We evaluated clinical scores, ear thickening, histological findings and the local protein expression of inflammatory molecules in the ear and Ig production in serum. PS nanoparticles aggravated AD-like skin lesions related to mite allergen, which was paralleled by the local protein levels of interleukin-4, CCL2/monocyte chemotactic protein-1, CCL3/macrophage inflammatory protein-1 alpha, and CCL4/macrophage inflammatory protein-1 beta. In contrast, PS nanoparticles decreased interferon-γ expression. Furthermore, exposure to PS nanoparticles induced ear swelling and CC-chemokine expression in the absence of allergen. These effects were greater with the smaller PS nanoparticles than with the larger ones regarding overall trend. These results suggest that exposure to PS nanoparticles under skin barrier defect/dysfunction can exacerbate AD-like skin lesions related to mite allergen in a size-dependent manner. The enhancing effects may be accounted for by T helper 2-biased immune responses. Furthermore, PS nanoparticles can evoke skin inflammation via the overexpression of CC-chemokines even in the absence of allergen in atopic subjects.

Abstract
Compared to the significant immunomodulation of cell wall component(s) of bacterium such as lipopolysaccharide (E. Coli), that of pathogenic fungi has not been well elucidated, especially in vivo. Furthermore, although it has been implied that beta-(1, 3)-glucan of fungi possesses various biological activities, the impacts of the component have not been properly clarified, possibly due to its insolubility in water and alkali solutions. Previously, we isolated a soluble type of beta-(1, 3) -glucan from Aspergillus (referred to as ASBG). The present study investigated the effects of a single pulmonary exposure to ASBG on the immune (proinflammatory) responses in naïve mice. ASBG (12.5-100micorg/animal) exposure Induced neutrophilic lung inflammation with an enhanced local expression of proinflammatory cytokines such as interleukin (IL)-1beta and chemokines such as macrophage inflammatory protein -1a, and keratinocyte-derived chemoattractant in a dose-dependent fashion with overall trends. On the other hand, ASBG at relatively lower doses significantly amplified the lung expression of IL-2, IL-6, and IL-12 as compared with vehicle. ASBG significantly induced pulmonary edema. Furthermore, ASBG augmented the nuclear translocation of nuclear factor (NF)-kB and its binding capacity to the promoter site of DNA in the lung homogenate. These results suggest that pulmonary exposure to ASBG confers lung inflammation, at least partly, via the enhanced local expression of proinflammatory cytokines, likely through NF-kB-dependent pathway.

Abstract
Asian sand dust (ASD) containing microbiological materials, sulfate (SO(4)(2)), and nitrate (NO(3)(-) ) derived from air pollutants in East China, reportedly cause adverse respiratory health effects. ASD aggravates ovalbumin (OVA)-associated experimental lung eosinophilia. In this study, the toxic materials adsorbed onto ASD were excluded by heat treatment at 360 degrees C for 30 min. The effects of nonheated ASD or heated ASD (H-ASD) toward the allergic lung inflammation were compared in murine lungs. ICR mice were administered intratracheally with normal saline (control), H-ASD, ASD, OVA, OVA + H-ASD, and OVA + ASD, four times at 2-week intervals. ASD only increased neutrophils in bronchoalveolar lavage fluids (BALFs) along with pro-inflammatory mediators, such as keratinocyte chemoattractant (KC). H-ASD and ASD enhanced eosinophil recruitment induced by OVA in the alveoli and in the submucosa of the airway, which has a goblet cell proliferation in the bronchial epithelium. The two ASDs synergistically increased interleukin-5 (IL-5), monocyte chemotactic protein-3 (MCP-3), and eotaxin, which were associated with OVA, in BALF. The enhancing effects were much greater in ASD than in H-ASD. The two ASDs induced the adjuvant effects to specific IgE and IgG1 production by OVA. In the in vitro study using RAW264.7 cells, ASD increased the expression of Toll-like receptor 2 (TLR 2) mRNA but not TLR4 mRNA. H-ASD caused no expression of either TLR mRNA. These results suggest that the aggravated lung eosinophilia by ASD may be due to activation of Th2-associated immune response via the activation of TLR2 by microbial components adhered to ASD.

Abstract
We have previously demonstrated the protective role of interleukin (IL)-6 against septic lung injury induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) using IL-6 knock-out (−/−) mice. This protection is mediated, at least partly, through the inhibition of the enhanced local expression of proinflammatory cytokines. In the present study, we addressed whether IL-6 regulates oxidative stress in the lung generated by LPS exposure using IL-6 (−/−) and corresponding wild type (WT) mice. Intraperitoneal LPS (1 mg/kg) challenge induced transcriptional expressions of inducible nitric oxide synthase and heme oxygenase −1 in the lung of mice with both genotypes. In the presence of LPS, these expressions were significantly greater in IL-6 (−/−) than in WT mice. Immunohistochemistry also showed that LPS induced a significant increase in 8-hydroxy-2′-deoxyguanosine formation in the lung as compared to vehicle. Furthermore, the formation was more intense in IL-6 (−/−) than in WT mice in the presence of LPS challenge. In the presence of LPS, lipid peroxidation in the lung was significantly greater in IL-6 (−/−) than in WT mice. These data suggest that the possible mechanisms in which endogenous IL-6 protects against septic lung injury induced by LPS involve, at least in part, its antioxidative properties.

Abstract
Effects of nano-sized materials (nanomaterials) on subjects with predisposing inflammatory disorders have not been well elucidated. This study examined the effects of pulmonary exposure to TiO2 nanomaterials on lung inflammation induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and consequent systemic inflammation with coagulatory disturbance in mice, in particular regarding their size-dependency. Also, gene expression pattern in the lung was compared among the experimental groups using cDNA microarray analysis. ICR male mice were divided into 8 experimental groups that intratracheally received vehicle, three sizes (15, 50, 100 nm) of TiO2 nanomaterials (8 mg/kg), LPS (2.5 mg/kg), or LPS plus nanomaterials. Twenty four h after the treatment, these nanomaterials exacerbated the lung inflammation and vascular permeability elicited by LPS, with an overall trend of amplified lung expressions of cytokines such as interleukin (IL)-1beta, macrophage chemoattractant protein (MCP)-1, and keratinocyte chemoattractant (KC). LPS plus nanomaterials, especially of a size less than 50 nm, elevated circulatory levels of fibrinogen, IL-1beta, MCP-1, and KC, and von Willebrand factor as compared with LPS alone. The enhancement tended overall to be greater with the smaller nanomaterials than with the larger ones. cDNA microarray analyses revealed that there was no difference in gene expression pattern between the LPS group and the LPS + nanomaterial. These results suggest that nanomaterials exacerbate lung inflammation related to LPS with systemic inflammation and coagulatory disturbance, and that the exacerbation is more prominent with smaller nanomaterials than with larger ones.

Abstract
Particulate matters can enhance antigen-related airway inflammation and immunoglobulin production. The present study was designed to determine the effects of different sizes of nanoparticles on the antigen-presenting cells (APC) in the lung. ICR mice were exposed to vehicle, carbon black (CB) nanoparticles (14 nm or 56 nm), ovalbumin (OVA), or OVA + nanoparticles intratracheally. The expression of major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class II, costimulatory molecules (CD80, CD86, CD11c), and DEC205 (dendritic cell marker), F4/80 (macrophage marker), and CD19 (B-cell marker) in the lung cells was measured by flow cytometry. 14 nm nanoparticles, but not 56 nm nanoparticles, increased the number of the total lung cells. Combination of OVA and 14 nm or 56 nm nanoparticles increased the total lung cells. The expression of MHC class II and/or costimulatory molecules and the number of APC in the lung were increased by 14 nm nanoparticles in the presence or absence of OVA. The increases were more prominent with combination of OVA and 14 nm nanoparticles. 56 nm nanoparticles did not show any significant effects. 14 nm CB nanoparticles can increase the expression of MHC class II and costimulatory molecules and the number of APC in the lung, especially in the presence of antigen, which can result in subsequent antigen-related airway inflammation and immunoglobulin production.

Abstract
Epidemiological and experimental studies have suggested that diesel exhaust particles (DEPs), which generate reactive oxygen species, may be involved in the recent increase in the prevalence of lung diseases. Cacao liquor proanthocyanidins (CPs) are naturally occurring polyphenols with antioxidative activities. We carried out a study in mice to investigate the effects of dietary supplementation of CPs on lung injury induced by intratracheal administration of DEPs (500 μg/body). Dietary supplementation with 1.0% CPs inhibited DEP-induced lung injury, characterized by neutrophil sequestration and edema. Immunohistochemical analyses showed that CPs prevented enhanced expression of vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 and intercellular adhesion molecule-1 caused by DEPs in the lung injury. Numerous adducts of nitrotyrosine, N-(hexanonyl) lysine, 4-hydroxy-2-nonenal, and 8-OHdG were also observed immunohistochemically in the lungs of mice treated with DEPs. However, these indicators of oxidative stress were barely visible in mice pretreated with CP supplementation. In addition, the level of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances in the lung was decreased by CP supplementation in the presence of DEPs. These results suggest that CPs inhibit DEP-induced lung injury by reducing oxidative stress, in association with a reduction in the expression of adhesion molecules.

Abstract
The present study was designed to investigate the effect of sinomenine (SIN), an alkaloid extracted from sinomenium acutum on collagen-induced arthritis (CIA) in mice. For this investigation, mice were s.c. immunized with type II collagen (CII) emulsified with complete Freund's adjuvant (day 0). Varying doses of SIN were orally administered daily commencing on day 0 daily over a period of 55 days. The severity of arthritis was evaluated according to clinical score, the effect of SIN on immune responses were determined by measurement of proliferative responses of spleen cells, antibody levels in serum and cytokine assays. Anti-CII IgG2a and IFN-gamma were measured as indicators of Th1 immune responses and anti-CII IgG1, IgE and IL-5 as those of Th2 responses. IL-10 and TGF-beta were measured as indicators of T cell regulator responses. The results showed that treatment with SIN was followed by decreases in the incidence and severity of CIA, anti-CII IgG and the antigen-specific splenocyte proliferation. Production of all isotypes of antibodies including anti-CII IgG2a, IgG1 and IgE as well as secretion of cytokines such as IFN-gamma and IL-5 were suppressed by SIN. In addition, SIN enhanced the secretion of TGF-beta while it had no obvious effect on production of IL-10. These results suggest that the anti-arthritic effect of SIN may be related to the suppression of both Th1 and Th2 immune responses. TGF-beta may at least in part contribute to the suppression of Th1 as well as Th2 immune responses.

Abstract
Ambient particulate matter (PM) exacerbates allergic airway diseases. Our previous study showed that diesel exhaust particles, the main constituents in urban PM, enhance airway hyperresponsivness in mice. In addition, health effects of PM with a diameter of less than 100 nm, called nanoparticles, have been reported, and we have also demonstrated that carbon nanoparticles exacerbate antigen-related airway inflammation. The present study investigates the effects of pulmonary exposure to two sizes of carbon nanoparticles on lung physiology and lung expression of Muc5ac in the presence or absence of antigen in mice. Nanoparticles alone or ovalbumin (OVA) alone moderately enhanced cholinergic airway reactivity, as assessed by total respiratory system resistance (R) and Newtonian resistance (Rn). In the nanoparticle + OVA groups, all the parameters for lung responsiveness, such as R, compliance, elastance, Rn, tissue damping, and tissue elastance, were worse than those in the vehicle group, the corresponding nanoparticle groups or the OVA group. The lung mRNA level for Muc5ac was significantly higher in the OVA group than in the vehicle group, and further increased in the nanoparticle + OVA groups than in the OVA or the nanoparticle groups. These data suggest that carbon nanoparticles can enhance lung hyperresponsiveness, especially in the presence of antigen. The effects may be mediated, at least partly, through the enhanced lung expression of Muc5ac.

Abstract
We have previously shown that mice lacking the TSH receptor (TSHR) exhibit osteoporosis due to enhanced osteoclast formation. The fact that this enhancement is not observed in double-null mice of TSHR and TNFalpha suggests that TNFalpha overexpression in osteoclast progenitors (macrophages) may be involved. It is unknown how TNFalpha expression is regulated in osteoclastogenesis. Here, we describe a receptor activator for nuclear factor-kappaB ligand (RANKL)-responsive sequence (CCG AGA CAG AGG TGT AGG GCC), spanning from -157 to -137 bp of the 5'-flanking region of the TNFalpha gene, which functions as a cis-acting regulatory element. We further show how RANKL treatment stimulates the high-mobility group box proteins (HMGB) HMGB1 and HMGB2 to bind the RANKL-responsive sequence and up-regulates TNFalpha transcription. Exogenous HMGB elicits the expression of cytokines, including TNFalpha, as well as osteoclast formation. Conversely, TSH inhibits the expression of HMGB and TNFalpha and the formation of osteoclasts. These results suggest that HMGB play a pivotal role in osteoclastogenesis. We also show a direct correlation between the expression of HMGB and TNFalpha and osteoclast formation in TSHR-null mice and TNFalpha-null mice. Taken together, we conclude that HMGB and TNFalpha play critical roles in the regulation of osteoclastogenesis and the remodeling of bone.

Abstract
In this study, we employed a panel of cell lines to determine whether p53-dependent cell death in neuroblastoma (NB) cells is caused by apoptotic cellular function, and we further studied the molecular mechanism of apoptosis induced via the p53-dependent pathway. We obtained evidence that a type of p53-dependent stress, doxorubicin (Doxo) administration, causes accumulation of p53 in the nucleus of NB cells and phosphorylation of several serine residues in both Doxo-sensitive and -resistant cell lines. Upregulation of p53-downstream molecules in cells and upregulation of Noxa in the mitochondrial fraction were observed only in Doxo-sensitive NB cells. Significance of Noxa in the Doxo-induced NB cell death was confirmed by Noxa-knockdown experiments. Mitochondrial dysfunction, including cytochrome-c release and membrane potential disregulation, occurred and resulted in the activation of the intrinsic caspase pathway. However, in the Doxo-resistant cells, the accumulation in the nucleus and phosphorylation of p53 did not induce p53-downstream p21(Cip1/Waf1) expression and the Noxa upregulation, resulting in the retention of the mitochondrial homeostasis. Taken together, these findings indicate that the p53 pathway seems to play a crucial role in NB cell death by Noxa regulation in mitochondria, and inhibition of the induction of p53-downstream effectors may regulate drug resistance of NB cells.

Abstract
The current authors have previously demonstrated that diesel exhaust particles (DEP) enhance antigen-related airway inflammation in mice. Furthermore, a recent study has shown that organic chemicals in DEP, rather than their carbonaceous nuclei, are important contributors to the aggravating effects of airway inflammation. However, the components in DEP responsible for the enhancing effects on the model remain to be identified. The current authors investigated the effects of naphthoquinone (NQ), one of the extractable chemical compounds of DEP, on antigen-related airway inflammation, local expression of cytokine proteins, and antigen-specific immunoglobulin (Ig) production in mice. Pulmonary exposure to NQ dose-dependently aggravated antigen-related airway inflammation, as characterised by infiltration of eosinophils and lymphocytes around the airways and an increase in goblet cells in the bronchial epithelium. Combined exposure to NQ and antigen enhanced the local expression of interleukin (IL)-4, IL-5, eotaxin, macrophage chemoattractant protein-1 and keratinocyte chemoattractant, compared with exposure to antigen or NQ alone. Also, NQ exhibited adjuvant activity for the antigen-specific production of IgG(1) and IgG(2a). These results provide the first experimental evidence that naphthoquinone can enhance antigen-related airway inflammation in vivo, and that naphthoquinone can, to some extent, partly play a role in the pathogenesis of diesel exhaust particle toxicity on the condition.

Abstract
Difference of 8-hydroxy-deoxyguanosine (8-OH-dG) formation in liver DNA in C3H/HeN and in C57BL/6 mice--fed oxidized lard and dietary oils (soybean and sardine)--was investigated. The blank levels of 8-OH-dG were higher in C3H/HeN mice (highly sensitive to liver tumorigenesis) than in C57BL/6 mice (resistant strain). The level of 8-OH-dG increased much more in C3H/HeN mice than in the C57BL/6 mice fed by oxidized lard and dietary oil treatment. Feeding oxidized lard and dietary oils increased 8-oxo-guanine DNA glycosylase I (OGG1) and mRNA 8-oxo-dGTPase in C57BL/6 mice. On the other hand, no appreciable change of mRNA in the C3H/HeN mice was observed. The formation differences of 8-OH-dG from the two murine strains fed with oxidized lard and dietary oils may be associated with the different mRNA levels in the DNA repair enzymes because the mRNA levels in the DNA repair enzymes were much lower in C3H/HeN mice than in C57BL/6 mice.

Abstract
A 56-yr-old man was admitted to our university hospital for severe back pain one month after a resection for lung adenocarcinoma (stage IIIA) without evidence of the adrenal mass. Computed tomography (CT) of the abdomen showed bilateral bleeding of adrenal tumors. Endocrinological laboratory studies showed high plasma ACTH and normal serum cortisol levels with the loss of circadian rhythm. Although plasma ACTH levels increased, there was no cortisol response to administration of human corticotropichormone (hCRH). Core-needle biopsy was performed on the right adrenal tumor and revealed adenocarcinoma cells mimicking a primary lung tumor previously examined. We diagnosed retroperitoneal hemorrhage due to bilateral adrenal gland metastasis from lung adenocarcinoma with adrenal insufficiency. Adrenal metastases most commonly originate from a primary lung tumor, followed by stomach, esophagus and liver/bile ducts. Bilateral adrenal metastases were noted in approximately half of all adrenal metastases patients. Clinically significant adrenal hemorrhage by metastasis is exceedingly rare and non-specific symptoms, such as abdominal, chest or back pain, nausea and vomiting, confusion, weakness, hypotension, shock and high fever, are often observed in these patients. We present a case of massive retroperitoneal hemorrhage and adrenal insufficiency due to adrenal gland metastasis from adenocarcinoma of lung.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Diesel exhaust particles (DEP) can enhance various respiratory diseases. However, it is unclear as to which components in DEP are associated with the enhancement. We investigated the effects of DEP components on antigen-related airway inflammation, using residual carbonaceous nuclei of DEP after extraction (washed DEP), extracted organic chemicals (OC) in DEP (DEP-OC), and DEP-OC plus washed DEP (whole DEP) in the presence or absence of ovalbumin (OVA). METHODS Male ICR mice were intratracheally administrated with OVA and/or DEP components. We examined the cellular profile of bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) fluid, histological changes, lung expression of inflammatory molecules, and antigen-specific production of IgG1 in the serum. RESULTS DEP-OC, rather than washed DEP, enhanced infiltration of inflammatory cells into BAL fluid, magnitude of airway inflammation, and proliferation of goblet cells in the airway epithelium in the presence of OVA, which was paralleled by the enhanced lung expression of eotaxin and IL-5 as well as the elevated concentration of OVA-specific IgG1. In contrast, washed DEP with OVA showed less change and increased the lung expression of IFN-gamma. The combination of whole DEP and OVA caused the most remarkable changes in the entire enhancement, which was also accompanied by the enhanced expression of IL-13 and macrophage inflammatory protein-1 alpha. CONCLUSION DEP-OC, rather than washed DEP, exaggerated allergic airway inflammation through the enhancement of T-helper type 2 responses. The coexistence of OC with carbonaceous nuclei caused the most remarkable aggravation. DEP components might diversely affect various types of respiratory diseases, while whole DEP might mostly aggravate respiratory diseases.

Abstract
Among 11 JMML children, two had an abnormal karyotype, and nine had a normal karyotype at onset. In one patient with trisomy 8 and four patients with a normal karyotype, a new clone with an aberrant karyotype emerged 1-14 months after 6-mercaptopurine (6-MP) therapy as shown by G-banding analyses. Fluorescence in situ hybridization disclosed that an abnormal clone existed in approximately 3-6% of bone marrow cells at onset or before 6-MP therapy in all the four cases examined, and increased to approximately 12-90% during the treatment. In culture with granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor, cytogenetically abnormal clones that proliferated during 6-MP therapy possessed significantly less sensitivity to the antimetabolite, compared with cells that decreased in numbers after the therapy. A PTPN11 mutation was detected in all of granulocyte-macrophage colonies irrespective of karyotypic aberration in one patient, whereas approximately 80% of erythroid colonies and 20% of mixed colonies possessed neither a PTPN11 mutation nor chromosomal abnormalities. The appearance of chromosomal aberrations shown by G-banding during 6-MP therapy in some JMML cases may result, in part, from the growth of a 6-MP-refractory clone that already exists at onset. It is possible that treatment with 6-MP promotes progression of the disease.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Diesel exhaust particles (DEP) enhance allergic airway inflammation in mice (Takano et al., Am J Respir Crit Care Med 1997; 156: 36-42). DEP consist of carbonaceous nuclei and a vast number of organic chemical compounds. However, it remains to be identified which component(s) from DEP are responsible for the enhancing effects. 9,10-Phenanthraquinone (PQ) is a quinone compound involved in DEP. OBJECTIVE To investigate the effects of PQ inoculated intratracheally on allergic airway inflammation related to ovalbumin (OVA) challenge. MATERIALS AND METHODS We evaluated effects of PQ on airway inflammation, local expression of cytokine proteins, and allergen-specific immunoglobulin production in mice in the presence or absence of OVA. Results In the presence of OVA, PQ (2.1 ng/animal) significantly increased the numbers of eosinophils and mononuclear cells in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid as compared with OVA alone. In contrast, the numbers of these cells around the airways were not significantly different between OVA challenge and OVA plus PQ challenge in lung histology. PQ exhibited adjuvant activity for the allergen-specific production of IgG1 and IgE. OVA challenge induced significant increases in the lung expression of IL-4, IL-5, eotaxin, macrophage chemoattractant protein-1, and keratinocyte chemoattractant as compared with vehicle challenge. However, the combination of PQ with OVA did not alter the expression levels of these proteins as compared with OVA alone. CONCLUSION These results indicate that PQ can enhance the immunoglobulin production and the infiltration of inflammatory cells into alveolar spaces that are related to OVA, whereas PQ seems to be partially responsible for the DEP toxicity on the allergic airway inflammation.

Abstract
We studied the effect of rolipram, a phosphodiesterase (PDE) IV inhibitor, on allergic footpad swelling in mice. For this study, varying adjuvants including complete Freund's adjuvant (CFA), incomplete Freund's adjuvant (IFA) and Imject Alum (Alum) were used because the extent of antigen-specifically induced T helper type 1 (Th1) and Th2 responses had been shown to depend on adjuvants used. To induce allergic footpad swelling, we immunized mice with ovalbumin (OVA) emulsified in either CFA or IFA, dissolved in Alum or in phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) as a control (day 0), followed by subcutaneous injection of the antigen into footpads on day 21. Rolipram was given orally to the animals daily from days 0-20. Results showed that treatment with rolipram was followed by an increase in early swelling at 0.5 h and a decrease in late swelling at 6 and 24 h in the CFA group. In the IFA group, rolipram significantly enhanced swelling at, but not after, 30 min. In the Alum and the PBS groups, the PDE inhibitor failed to affect the OVA-specific footpad reaction at all times examined. Treatment of the CFA and IFA groups with rolipram significantly inhibited the production of the Th1 antibody anti-OVA immunoglobulin G2a (IgG2a), and the drug enhanced Th2 cell-dependent anti-OVA IgE production. In both groups, rolipram also enhanced the secretion of Th2 cytokines including interleukin-4 (IL-4) and IL-10. These findings suggest that rolipram may facilitate early allergic footpad swelling mediated by Th2 immune responses, while the late phase of swelling associated with Th1 responses may be attenuated by the PDE IV inhibitor.

Abstract
We examined whether oral administration of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) from Escherichia coli reactivated antigen-induced arthritis (AIA) in mice that is one of models of human rheumatoid arthritis. To induce AIA, mice were immunized by subcutaneous injection of ovalbumin (OVA) emulsified with complete Freund's adjuvant into the base of the tail (day 0) followed by intraarticular injection of OVA on day 21. To investigate the ability of LPS to reactivate AIA, varying doses of LPS were p.o. administered 48 h after the challenge injection. The results showed that administration of LPS was followed by reactivation of AIA in a dose-related fashion. The reactivation of AIA by LPS was associated with increases in interferon-gamma, interleukin-1beta and tumour necrosis factor-alpha. Polymyxin B sulfate given immediately before administration of LPS suppressed the reactivation of AIA. These findings suggest that LPS from intestinal bacteria may play a role in the reactivation of joint inflammation in which immune responses to pathogenic antigens are involved.

Abstract
The present study was undertaken to study the effect of varying types of anti-arthritic drugs on Th1 and Th2 immune responses in mice. To immunize mice, ovalbumin (OVA) emulsified with complete Freund's adjuvant was injected s.c. at the base of the tail (day 0). Indomethacin (IND) as a non-steroidal antiinflammatory drug (NSAID), dexamethasone (DEX) as a steroidal antiinflammatory drug, methotrexate (MTX), auranofin (AUR), and D-penicillamine (D-PA) as an anti-rheumatic drugs were orally administrated daily from days 0 to 20. On day 21, anti-OVA IgG2a and interferon (IFN)-gamma as indicators of Th1 responses and anti-OVA IgG1 and interleukin (IL)-10 as those of Th2 responses were measured. Treatments with IND, DEX, MTX and AUR were followed by decreases in OVA-specific IgG and proliferation of spleen cells to the antigen. Treatments with IND, DEX, MTX and AUR inhibited both Th1 and Th2 immune responses, although the inhibitory effects of these drugs on the antigen-specific IgG2a and IFN-gamma production appeared to be greater than those on IgG1 and IL-10 production. D-PA failed to influence anti-OVA IgG, IgG2a and IgG1 production as well as IFN-gamma and IL-10 secretion. Administrations of all the drugs used resulted in suppression of antigen (OVA)-induced arthritis in mice which was associated with inhibition of anti-OVA IgG2a but not IgG1 production. These results suggest that anti-arthritic drugs including IND, DEX, MTX and AUR appear to suppress Th1 and, to a lesser extent, Th2 immune responses, and their anti-inflammatory effects on human rheumatoid arthritis might be at least in part explained by downregulation by these drugs of Th1 responses involved in the disease.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Metallothionein (MT) is a protein that can be induced by inflammatory mediators and participate in cytoprotection. However, its role in inflammation remains to be established. A study was undertaken to determine whether intrinsic MT protects against acute inflammatory lung injury induced by bacterial endotoxin in MT-I/II knock out (-/-) and wild type (WT) mice. METHODS MT (-/-) and WT mice were given vehicle or lipopolysaccharide (LPS, 125 microg/kg) intratracheally and the cellular profile of the bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) fluid, pulmonary oedema, lung histology, expression of proinflammatory molecules, and nuclear localisation of nuclear factor-kappaB (NF-kappaB) in the lung were evaluated. RESULTS MT (-/-) mice were more susceptible than WT mice to lung inflammation, especially to lung oedema induced by intratracheal challenge with LPS. After LPS challenge, MT deficiency enhanced vacuolar degeneration of pulmonary endothelial cells and type I alveolar epithelial cells and caused focal loss of the basement membrane. LPS treatment caused no significant differences in the enhanced expression of proinflammatory cytokines and chemokines nor in the activation of the NF-kappaB pathway in the lung between the two genotypes. Lipid peroxide levels in the lungs were significantly higher in LPS treated MT (-/-) mice than in LPS treated WT mice. CONCLUSIONS Endogenous MT protects against acute lung injury related to LPS. The effects are possibly mediated by the enhancement of pulmonary endothelial and epithelial integrity, not by the inhibition of the NF-kappaB pathway.
