Awareness of occupational hazards, and attitudes and practices towards the use of personal protective equipment among informal woodworkers: the case of the Sokoban Wood Village in Ghana

We investigated the awareness of occupational hazards, and attitudes and practices towards the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) among informal woodworkers of the Sokoban Wood Village in Ghana. Structured questionnaires were used to collect primary data from 355 woodworkers and analysed using descriptive statistics and logistic regression. The results showed that the workers are aware of PPE and knew about injuries they are exposed to. Most woodworkers had a positive attitude in terms of their perception on the necessity to use PPE but had a low frequency of PPE usage. Educational level, job type, length of service and marital status are the socio-demographic characteristics that significantly influence woodworkers' compliance with health and safety regulations. We recommend that institutions charged with enforcement of occupational health and safety regulations should extend their monitoring roles to informal workers and liaise with local companies to supply PPE to informal woodworkers at subsidized costs.

Love, power, resilience and vulnerability: relationship dynamics between female sex workers in Ghana and their intimate partners

Little is known about female sex workers' daily lives or emotional relationships. Using relational-cultural theory, this study explored the relationship dynamics between sex workers and their intimate partners in Kumasi, Ghana. We collected qualitative data from 37 male intimate partners through 24 in-depth interviews and two focus group discussions (FGDs) with 13 male partners. We also conducted three FGDs with 20 women involved in sex work. Relationships between sex workers and their intimate partners were mutual, reciprocal and transactional. Male partners provided protection for financial support, a place to sleep and intimacy. Both men and women described their relationships in terms of friendship, love and a hopeful future. Women were reluctant to quit sex work because they depended on it for income. Most respondents did not use condoms in these romantic relationships, citing trust, love, faithfulness and commitment. Both men and women described high levels of violence in their relationships. The context of sex work heightens vulnerability but also appears to facilitate resilience and creative coping strategies. The relational dynamics between sex workers and their intimate partners in Ghana merit further exploration to examine the extent to which women involved in sex work hold and exert power within these relationships.

Factors influencing the practice of exclusive breastfeeding among nursing mothers in a peri-urban district of Ghana

BACKGROUND

Exclusive breastfeeding (EBF) is one of the optimal infant and young child feeding practices. Globally, <40% of infants under 6 months of age are exclusively breastfed. In Ghana, 63% of children <6 months are exclusively breastfed which is far less than the 100% recommended by the United Nation Children Emergency Fund. This study was carried out to find out the factors that influence the practice of exclusive breastfeeding in the district.

METHODS

A cross-sectional quantitative study was conducted using structured questionnaires. A convenience sampling technique was employed to select 380 nursing mothers who attended postnatal care at the postnatal clinic in all the 13 health facilities with child welfare clinics (both public and private) and were available on the day of data collection. Data were analysed using frequency and CHISQ tables.

RESULTS

There was a significant association between socio-demographic characteristics of mothers such as age (p = 0.129), religion (p = 0.035) type of employment (p = 0.005) and the practice of exclusive breastfeeding. Again, there was significant relationship between mothers' knowledge on EBF in terms of sources of information about EBF (p = 0.000), steps taken by mothers who perceived not to have breast milk (p = 0.000), some medical conditions of nursing mothers (p = 0.000) and the practice of EBF.

CONCLUSION

Most nursing mothers use infant formula feeds as either supplement or substitute for breast milk based on their perception that breast milk may not be sufficient for the babies despite the high cost of these artificial milk. This puts the babies at a higher risk of compromised health and malnutrition which has the potential of increasing infant mortality. Most mothers are not practicing exclusive breastfeeding because their spouses and family members do not allow them.

Benefits of Disclosure of HIV Status to Infected Children and Adolescents: Perceptions of Caregivers and Health Care Providers

The rate of disclosure of HIV status to infected children and adolescents remains low in developing countries. We used a mixed-method approach to determine the perceptions of caregivers and health care providers about the benefits of HIV status disclosure to infected children and adolescents and to assess the support needed by caregivers during disclosure. We recruited a convenience sample of 118 caregivers of HIV-infected children and adolescents for the quantitative component of the study and completed in-depth qualitative interviews with 10 purposefully sampled key informants, including health care providers and volunteer workers. The main benefits of disclosure included improved medication adherence and healthier, more responsible adolescent sexual behavior. The main supports required by caregivers during disclosure included biomedical information, emotional and psychological support, and practical guidelines regarding disclosure. We confirmed the importance of disclosure to HIV-infected children and adolescents and the need to develop culturally specific disclosure guidelines.

Index of potential contamination: Schistosoma haematobium infections in school children in the Ashanti Region of Ghana

BACKGROUND

Children are acknowledged as the most vulnerable group to urinary schistosomiasis.

OBJECTIVE

To determine the age group(s) of school children considered as the major contributor(s) to the spread of the disease.

DESIGN

Observational/Prospective (concurrent) studies.

SETTING

Barekuma, Aninkroma and Hiawo Besease, riparian communities in the Ashanti Region of Ghana.

SUBJECTS

Hundred children each were randomly selected from Barekuma and Hiawo Besease basic schools with population age profiles between 4 and 18 years. They were then categorised into 4-6, 7-9, 10-12, 13-15 and 16-18 years, respectively. However, at Aninkroma, the entire school population of 119 pupils, aged between 4 and 15 years were used. They were similarly grouped into 4-6, 7-9, 10-12 and 13-15 years, respectively. Urine filtration method was used for isolation and enumeration of S. haematobium eggs from the subjects. The subjects were monitored through repetition of the experiment at fortnightly intervals over four weeks.

MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES

Corrected relative Index of Potential Contamination (IPC) expressed as percentage after calculating the crude IPC.

RESULTS

The age groups with the highest relative IPCs at Barekuma, Aninkroma and Hiawo Besease were 7-9, 10-12 and 13-15 years, registering 35.6%, 53.9% and 57.7%, respectively. The age group 4-6 years consistently had the lowest IPC in all the communities.

CONCLUSION

The age groups 7-9,10-12 and 13-15 years were considered to be the major transmitters of the disease in the communities.
